Q: Setting up Pix 515E in front of ISA Server 2004 and Exchange Server 2003

Can anyone help me with setting up this network layout with my Pix Firewall.
Network Layout : Pix > DMZ > ISA Server 2004 > Exchange Server 2003 + Users.

Pix outside IP Address : 65.77.78.47 255.255.255.0
Pix inside IP Address : 172.17.0.1 255.255.0.0
DMZ IP Addresss : 172.18.0.3 255.255.0.0
ISA Server outside IP : 172.18.0.2 255.255.0.0
ISA Server inside IP : 172.18.0.1 255.255.0.0

I've identified the interfaces IP Address and named all plus the following config:

global (outside) 1 interface

nat (inside) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 0 0

nat (dmz) 1 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 0 0

conduit permit icmp any any

route outside 0.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 65.77.78.1 1

I can now access the internet from my ISA Server in the DMZ zone.
I am intending to put the ISA Server out on the DMZ to access the outside world with

static (dmz,outside) 172.18.0.2 65.77.78.47 netmask 255.255.255.255 0 0

and then open all traffic to ISA with

access-list acl_out permit ip any host 65.77.78.47 255.255.255.255 any
access-group acl_out in interface outside

then I’ll give ISA server access to the inside network with

access-list acl_dmz permit tcp 172.18.0.1 255.255.0.0 172.17.0.2 255.255.0.0 eq 25
access-group acl_dmz in interface dmz

With the above commands, the first access-list acl_out was not accepted by pix plus the second access-list acl_dmz so if you could please share some light upon my configurations.

Preferred Solution: Setting up Pix 515E in front of ISA Server 2004 and Exchange Server 2003

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

The above config will nat 172.18.0.2 to 65.77.78.48. You can't static NAT an entire IP to the same as a global (your interface). You can only do this if you NAT specific ports.

The above config will allow internet to reach 65.77.78.48 via TCP 80/443/25. I can only assume you're using ISA for EFE server, and maybe proxy. (Not an ISA fan)

The above config allows your ISA server carte-blanche access. In essence, it's a DMZ by name only. Don't fool yourself.

Don't use conduits, they're deprecated.

Don't use a firewall to permit "any" to your ISA server, actually use it to block inbound ports.

Also, your ISA server shouldn't/can't have two NIC's in the same subnet. That's a bad idea on 10 different levels. IF you're using your ISA server (blech) as EFE / reverse proxy for OWA, and outbound proxy - you might as well keep it on the same subnet as your Exchange server (inside, I'm assuming.) Again, 10 different reasons why it's a flawed security plan.

If this is simply an EFE server or reverse proxy, make sure you don't keep the ISA server part of any AD domain, stick it in the DMZ, and restrict what hosts it's allowed to see on the network that you're trying to protect.

In trying to setup ISA 2004 server I've come up to a Questions?

the office has a DSL line that is currently going into a Netgear firewall/router and it works fine. When I pull it out and plug it into the NIC on the Proxy server it says "can't get IP" and put a "?" on the NIC card?

After rebooting and turning the DSL router off still will not pickup a IP.

Any Ideas as to why? I plug the ISA server in to the network and it picks up the IP fine??

Don't forget your licensing! You can call an MS sales rep directly and ask about pricing and requirements. Basically all you need is a good server, backup, redundant storage, a domain name and MX record and the software and licensing and you are good to go. An Internet connection also helps.

Hello,

I have a few computers running Winxp sp2 @ my company. I got most of the PC connected to the Exchange server 2003 via VPN (Exchange offsite).

I have one stubborn machine that is having trouble finding the exchange\host name. During the setup it will prompt me servername: "server" (checked cache mode). The second is the firstname.lastname, and when I click find, it could not locate the server or/global list.

Why can't it find the server or global address list? I was able to connect via VPN.

Well since this is a web/email server I put it here if you think it should go elsewhere let it be moved.

Last night our server IIS service started jumping up and down on our server in all of the hubbub that ensued this service shutting down started turning off other Exchange services on the server as well.

We got it all back up and running by making note of all the services (some which would not restart due to a bunch of errors about executible not being linked to a working service), stopping all the exchange and IIS services, backing up the information store, ripping out IIS in the Add/Remove programs windows components, reboot, reinstall IIS ad components, Reinstall Exchange over the top, Reapplying the service pack and lastly resetting the information store. All was good as far as email use ending and recieving internally and externally works like a champ.

The problem is while OWA was working for us before this tragedy It no longer is working at all. I can go to http:/server and get to the default website so I know parts of IIS is working but when I add in the /Exchange I get a unspecified Error in the top right of the page and when I check the log of the C:\WINDOWS\system32\LogFiles\W3SVC1 I get a 401 error thats not displaying on my broswer. The one big thing I noticed is that there is no Exchange application pool in the Virtual directory under application pool in the properties of the Exchange site. I only get DefaultAppPool I do not see the ExchangeAppPool.

My colleague has finally seen the light and wants to setup email restrictions on our Exchange server. It really isn't to hard to create groups of people and figure ourt what their limits will be, but I have searched around and was curious. Is anyone aware of any sort of formula used in creating these restrictions? I can come up with my own, but I was interested in seeing the thoughts of others concerning this.

I have Exchange server 2003 running and for some reason now. the postmaster is emailing out approx. 100,000 emails a day. Once I stop the the services for exchange it stops and i have no inbound activity so i know its my server. i was wondering if anyone has heard or seen anything like this before.
As far as i know there is nothing else on my system running in the background that would cause this I will get some more information of my running processes in a shortwhile.

I have just recently deployed a new exchange server 2003 on a domain controller running Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition R2. Everything was working well until I setup the VPN server. Now clients have to open and close Outlook several times before it will connect them to the exchange server. It will eventually allow them to connect to the exchange server it is just cumbersome to have to open Outlook 3-5, sometimes 7 times before it will connect to exchange. The DHCP and DNS are working fine, there are no errors reported about them in the event log, but I can't seem to resolve this issue. This just started happening after the VPN server was setup. Any help or tips you can provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I have MS SERVER 2003 SBE with exchange

I need to be able to do the following but dont know the best way / or any way to go about it.

There are a group of 5 who send quotes etc using outlook. When they send a quote they want the other 4 to be able to see it (in case of duplication etc).

I thought they could just CC to the other 4 but that is unnacceptable to them.

So i suppose what they want is a shared folder in outlook called (sales administrator) which they could all view.

Any help would be appreciated

would anyone know why I get a email message from "Public Folder Store (computer name)" and on the subject line it says "Status"? This started happening once I moved over the public folders from the 2000 exchange system to the new one I installed.

We had a crash on a server Exchange 2003. After that we made a copy of the mdbdata. Of course we reinstalled it. Now we're trying to mount the mailbox store (Priv1.edb 5 GB) but we receive this error:
The database files in this storage is inconsistent.
Next, following the MS article n. 327156 Eseutil.exe says that we have a "Dirty shutdown" database
"Eseutil /p" remains in "stand by" on "repair damaged database" step at 90% (the day after was still at 90%).

I have just loaded Outlook 2003. All my POP e-mail accounts work fine. My problem is with the exchange server. We have an old server running Microsoft Server 4.0. Outlook 2003 tries to send all my in-house e-mail as a pop account.

I just got SBS installed and also configured Exchange (i think). I added an MX record on my hosting account that points to my no-ip.com DNS service.
I can send mail fine but i am not recieving.

Do i need to contact the Hosting company? ISP? or no-ip.com?

You have to configure exchange to allow relaying for your domain, you have to forward port 25 on your router, you have to make sure your ISP isn't blocking port 25. That's all I can think of right now until I get some more information.

It looks like someone has hacked into our system and is sending out a huge amount of emails. I can see, in Exchange Systems Manager, about 5,000 emails in queue. My question is how do I delete or remove these emails? We are a small company so I know we are not sending out that many emails. Also, I can see the sender and it is not someone internally.

All you have to do is set up an MX record to point to your IP address or your dyndns one and open up port 25 on your router. I run one from home and it's easy to set up. Make sure you have DNS set up correctly for your public domain before installing Exchange.

In my office there is no problems with this account...but when the user connect thru a vpn connection, outlook send and receive all messages, if this user come back at the office and log on outlook there is no more message on the server.....

Hi all,

Currently I use Microsoft Outlook 2007 with Windows 7 on my home computer and have around 5 e-mail accounts that go into 1 inbox using POP3. I recently started a new job and received a work e-mail that uses Outlook 2003 with Microsoft Exchange Server. I cannot access the e-mails through POP3 and so can just access them through the Web when I am not at work.

I would like to have access to all of my old e-mails at work so that I can search through them and would also like to see my tasks and calendar. Before I knew how my work e-mail was set up I was planning on synchronizing 2 outlooks using dropbox and true crypt, but I don't think this is possible. Is there a way I can run a 2nd instance of Outlook at work with the pst file from home so that at least I can have access to searches of my old e-mail? Is there a way to synchronize my home tasks or calendar with the outlook 2003 exchange server at work? Or can I use both a pst file and have the work e-mails stored on the server at work?

Hiya All

Hope I have this in the right forum.

We are in the process of upgrading our Exchange Server. With that in mind, I'm looking for some input as to which would be better - 2003 or 2007.

Currently we have Exchange 5.5 and the database is reaching capacity (hopefully we can keep lower than capacity until last qtr this yr or first of next) so, the upgrade is needed. AND we are also on a NT 4 environment.

I am currently in the process of getting Windows Server 2003 R2 set up with Active Directory to meet that requirement. I also know Exchange 2k7 requires the 64-bit hw\sw.

Now, we have approx 400 employees here in this location (250-300 in this building / 100-150 in the building half mile away) and approx 100 in Berkshire, England. This building here is where all the servers are housed. We are connected to the building down the road via a T3 Wi-Fi and to Berkshire via T1.

Any Pros\Cons or reasons why we should or should not go to Exchange 2K7 that any of you can think of?? (right now I'm keeping the financial aspect out of the equation).

I got a windows server 2003 enterprise sp2 machine that is our exchange domain controller. The exchange email was not working for a few minutes. When I went to login to the server I got the message the computer shut down unexpectely. I then got the message after getting in saying that system has recovered from serious error. I have the minidump file if someone can look into this for me. The system crashed today at
4:16:54 PM Est today and earily in the morning around 5am on 10/20 also. Can anyone see why this is happening. The Minidumps are attached.

I recently upgraded and migrated our mailboxes from an Exchange 5.5 server to an Exchange 2003 server. I am getting errors in the application log of the new server that I cannot seem to resolve. If anyone has any suggestions, I would greatly appreciate it.

Until recently we had all emails from two different domains coming to us from ISP for internal distribution using our server. We have now split the companies and deleted that email address from internal users on our server but when we send email to to personnel on the old account they are still being directed internally by our server and then can not be delivered as the user accounts have been deleted. How do we reset the server so that the old addresses are no longer seen as "internal" accounts?

I have found an article, on the MS Knowledge Base stating that an upgrade from 2000 Standard to 2000 Enterprise is possible. I would "assume" that the same would follow with 2003 Standard to 2003 Enterprise, but can not find any articles that say that it is possible, or the steps involved.

If anyone can help me out, and possibly point me to some articles, that would be great.

Hi Guys I'm new to this and desperately need help.
I recently replaced the hard drive on a client computer in a small network (6 other client PCs running on a server 2003), after reinstalling and updating windows XP Pro SP3 and office 2003 reconnected to the network with no hassles. When trying to open outlook 2003 to set email accounts after about a minute I get the following message " The connection to the Microsoft Exchange Server is unavailable. Outlook must be online to complete this action" when I click ok get a window to type the server name and mailbox name, type the required names and click on "check names" again takes about a minute or two and get the following message " The name could not be resolved. The connection to the microsoft exchange server is unavailable. Outlook must be online to complete this action". I know the server and user names are correct and the PC is connected to the network (I can access the server with the administrator account). I haven't been able to set any POP3 accounts either because outlook will open only to give me the messages estated earlier.
Could anybody help please?
