Blurry Text problem, EDID and registry editing problem on an AMD card.

Q: Blurry Text problem, EDID and registry editing problem on an AMD card.

EDIT:I have found a solution, using a DVI to HDMI cable on an amd card will fix this problem, this thread can now die, hopefully someone else will find it if they have this problem.

Basically, i know what the problem is, but not how to rectify it. My tv (Sceptre X235BV-FHD, a rebranded sony bravia)suffers from an EDID mismatch issue or chroma subsampling due to some form of post processing done on my tv, i'm not sure which but either way the results are the same, my colors are inaccurate, text is blurry and it's painful on my already unhealthy eyes, in HDMI at least, vga is normal.

That said, i know how to fix it on nvidia cards, i used the method posted in this tutorial to disable audio over hdmi:
Cropped, off-center display at native 1900x1200 resolution on LG245WP and/or LG246WP monitors with recent NVIDIA drivers

The problem is, i recently upgraded to an amd card, and while i tried to use the pixel format to fix this, the amd drivers do not fix it, not only that but the registry edit to disable audio over hdmi that i used on nvidia cards no longer works(basically, if it sends audio over hdmi it causes my tv to think it's looking at a cable box or game system, not my pc), or the registry entry i need to input is different, or in a different location.
I have heard that i can permanently disable audio over hdmi through editing the EDID with this tutorial:
Force DVI/HDMI resolutions and refresh rates

However, i do not know what i must do to edit the EDID to permanently disable audio over HDMI, nor do i know how to edit either the drivers or the registry to disable it like i could on my old nvidia card.
I am sorry for the long post, as well as posting such a topic, but i am at the end of my rope on this.
Any help is much appreciated.

Preferred Solution: Blurry Text problem, EDID and registry editing problem on an AMD card.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

You should put your note: "I have found a solution, using a DVI to HDMI cable on an amd card will fix this problem, this thread can now die, hopefully someone else will find it if they have this problem." At the top followed by a space. I had to read it all to discover that.

Recently I bought a Intel (R) Pentium G2020 ~ 2.90 GHz (2 CPUs) which came with a Intel HD Graphics integrated video chip and installed Windows 8. My monitor is a Dell one LCD and its resolution is 1280x1024(32 bit) 60 Ghz.

Recently, I'm suffering text blurry problem. If you see the following pictures, you'll understand :

It sometimes automatically fixes and sometimes I need to do a factory reset in the monitor(turning it off and turning on by holding the power button).

But the problem is occurring too many times.Sometimes windows shows a popup saying " Your resolution should be 2560x1600 bla bla". But if I set the resolution to 2560x1600, my monitor stops working.

I bought a brand new Sony VAIO touchscreen laptop with windows 8.The laptop is full HD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080.

However i immediately noticed that everything looked too tiny. The text was difficult to read and the taskbar and icons were too tiny.So i went in "Display" and changed the DPI to Large (150%).Now everything is just the right size however a lot of the text is now blurry especially the text on Chrome browser and any installer and various other programs.

When i don't change the DPI,there is no blurriness but everything is tiny and if i increase the DPI everything is blurry.
Upgrading to Windows 8.1 did not help.

I can confirm that M$ did NOT fix the blurry text problem. This is absolutely UNACCEPTABLE for an OS to be released with a bug that was known long before RTM.

There could be legitimate reasons for this, though. The leaked version might not be the real RTM. It could also be a driver issue. Regardless, if this is in fact the real RTM, how could M$ release an unfinished product?

Its another nail in the coffin for Win 8/8.1 in my case. I hope it eventually gets fixed, but as it stands now M$ still has done nothing to sway me towards upgrading from Win 7.

For those who may be wondering, I'm running dual Nvidia 675m cards in SLI.

What blurry text problem? I have yet to see any text that doesn't look sharp, and I have seen it on a number of configurations. Are you sure it's not a driver issue? Did you install the NVidia 8.1 beta drivers? By the way, this is News? Posting in the news section?

OK so I have two monitors of 1920 by 1200 pixels each, one HP the second Iiyama. Each is supplied by a DVI cable (I have two Nvidia Geforce 210 graphics cards each of which has a DVI output at the native resolution). Recently the Iiyama stopped being identified as an Iiyama and was just labelled generic pnp monitor, whilst the HP is always seen as an HP. Plus the default resolution of the Iiyama went down to 1024 by 768.

I've manually adjusted the resolution of the Iiyama back to 1920x1200 and 60Hz progressive, which it accepts, but the problem is that the monitor text is extremely fuzzy and difficult to read but the resolution is the correct 1920x1200 resolution. I believe the output from the video card is sharp since if I take a screenshot (Printscreen) of the very fuzzy text and view that portion of the screenshot on my HP monitor it's perfectly sharp so it must be something happening at the level of the monitor.

If I swap DVI cables around or connect to a different video card DVI then it's still really fuzzy and labelled generic pnp.

I read in a few places about EDID settings but am nervous about trying to flash my monitor or do other crazy stuff without being totally sure what the problem is. Can some kind person suggest what I should do next?

Did you get a driver disk with the monitor? If so try reinstalling the software for it.

Hi. Please help me so much. I am so worried and can't explain how much I'd appreciate your help. In regedit, I edited a few things. I went to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\Curr entVersion. I edited "ProgramFilesDir" and "ProgramFilesDir (x86) both to S:\Applications, which is a directory on my second hard drive. I then restarted and noticed a few icons weren't showing and it didn't start up right. So under the Start Menu search, I went back into regedit and thought I put it back to where it was. I put "ProgramFilesDir" back to C:\ Program Files and "ProgramFilesDir (x86)" back to C:\ Program Files (x86). I THINK. I may have misspelled it or something. Well after restarting Windows, the few icons on my desktop that weren't displaying properly at first showed up. However, when I tried to go into msconfig, it said: "Windows cannot find 'C:\Windows\system32\msconfig.exe". Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again." This has done this for other programs too. Even programs onto my other S: drive! Please help me as I am very worried and only have one product key, so I cannot reinstall Windows. I have copies of my registry back from October, but have no idea if they would be OK to use. I don't know what to do and am very worried. I can't even go into System Restore

I am struggling with the widely discussed problem of blurry text in Windows 8.1. I have made countless adjustments to monitor settings, display settings, video card settings, ClearType settings, color schemes, altered FONTSMOOTHINGGAMMA registry value, used various calibration programs, enabled and disabled ClearType, enabled and disabled that high DPI thing, and re-checked several times that all the relevant drivers are up to date. It's all useless. Working with Windows 8.1 is still sheer murder on the eyes.

I would have certainly begun to question my eyesight or possibly even sanity, if it wasn't for the fact that I have two computers turned on simultaneously, one with Windows XP and one with Windows 8.1. I am using one monitor, unplugging it from one computer and plugging it into the other whenever I want to switch from one computer to another. I am looking at the exact same document with the exact same version of Word, and under Windows XP the text is comfortable to read and I can write for hours without problems, and under Windows 8.1 I feel my eyes getting tired within minutes.

It must have something to do with the way fonts are displayed under Windows 8.1. Look at the font Times, for instance. Under Windows 8.1, the comma looks just a little more than the period, and the period looks just a little more than nothing. Under Windows XP, the period looks like a proper period and the comma looks like a proper comma.

The difference is even more striking with Total Comm... Read more

Hi guys.
I got a brand new laptop and updated to windows 10 from windows 8.1.
Windows makes me hate windows 10. There were issues like monitor brightness and sound. But now both are fixed after updating the drivers, i guess.

Now here is the main problem. I have laptop with 1080p resolution, for reading purposes. 15.6 inches though. So the GUI looks really small when its at 100 display ratio (or whatever its called). So i have increased the ratio to 150% and most of the applications have gone super blurry.

I have looked for fixes online, but all the solutions i have found do not work.
I have tried XPE Windows 10 DPI Fix. (Did not work)
I have tried putting a cmd file in start up. (Did not work)

Now i am rethinking why i bought a windows laptop.

My specs:
Make - ASUS
OS - Windows 10 (Previous 8.1)
Resolution - 1920x1080
Screen size - 15.6 inch
Windows Updates - Up to date

The day before yesterday I got onto my computer & EVERYTHING was larger than normal. I then went to the Settings in Display Properties & put the Screen Resolution to 1152 X 864 pixels like I had it on. (I didn't change the resolution to the larger size before & my husband says he didn't either) After I changed the resolution to what it was normally, All of the text was blurry!!! I have a HP vs17e moniter (it's a flat screen), so I reset it to the factory settings, but that did not help. I went into effects and changed the font smoothing to ClearType, that helped a little but not a lot. I also downloaded something called Clear Type Tuning from Microsoft, but that didn't do any good either.
I messed around with the resolutions & set it at 1280 X 1024. It made the text not as blurry, but the smaller text still seems a little blurry to me. (My husband says its not but he doesn't see very good anyway, & told me that it was me, but the current book I am reading text is fine).

Does anyone know what may be going on???

Please help me.

Hi all,

I'm getting this weird blurriness of the text on my monitor. It only happens after then PC has been on for about 30 mins, which makes me think it has something to do with overheating. So, first I thought it was my Geforce MX440 (because the fan is noisy at startup, so I'm gonna get it )warrantied"), so I put my old TNT2 in, but it still did it. I haven't got a spare monitor, so I wont be able to test that for a while.

The font goes blurry (but not unreadable) for a while, then intermittently changes from blurry to normal, having this weird shadowy kind of thing to the right of the text.
I've attached a jpg of a screenshot, I don't know if people will notice it, but believe me, after hours of looking at word, you get to notice it!

I have it on clear type now, and there's no blurriness on the text, but still on other things (like the cursor, the thing that blinks when you type).

What I want to know, is what is causing this, and does cleartype always look so weird on CRT's?

I have a Diamond View 1786FD

Other applications, non-Microsoft, do not have this new 'feature'?

Anything new installed recently around the time you noticed this starting to happen?

Does it happen everywhere in those M$ apps?

Suspect it's a setting within them or Windows, related to focus maybe or maybe within Catalyst, is where i would look, and upgrade your video driver/suite to the latest and see if by chance that fixes it. [13.1 is the latest stable release, I believe.]

I would leave the clear type ON probably, interesting issue, if it hadn't corrected when you took cursor nearby, I would have suspected the monitor was starting to go bad.

I know this was addressed and not resolved about a year ago. If there is another thread about this issue please let me know.

Had to replace my Samsung monitor with a new Samsung SD590_S27D590P. The older monitor was connected to my ATI video card via DVI. New unit required HDMI which my video card also uses. So, all is fine except the text EVERYWHERE basically is out of focus or just plain hazy. I have tried clear type, and I have gone into APPEARANCES to uncheck everything one at a time. To no avail. So I am looking for ideas to solve this one. Very annoying for sure.

I have a second HDMI cable plugged into the monitor as position 2 for TV input. I just thought of swapping the cables around Who knows.

So, help please.

A:Hazy or Blurry text

I have no idea if this is related. But my Laptop is prone to hazy text. The thing that improved it the most was color calibration of the video card. Most especially the Gamma setting. The text was so blurry I had to use dark themes in forums just to read them easily. Now it's still not as sharp as my old Desktop with VX900 CRT monitor. But it is usable with normal themes.

I would search your video card and Gamma adjustment and also color calibration. There should be instructions if that card lets you adjust the Gamma.

I have a new Pavilion 32 bought because of the large real-estate, and I'm running it at 2560x1440 with an NVIDIA GeForce 610 (which supportes that resolution).  Its currently in dual-monitor mode, where the other monitor is a Dell 1704FPT running at 1280x1024.  Text on the Pavilion is legible everywhere, granted, but when I move any window to the other (cheapo) display I notice an immediate sharpening of the text.  This happens regardless of the software running, whether it is a browser, a Windows utility or anything else.  Likewise for desktop icon titles.  I could attach screenshots, but unfortunately the screenshot process itself adds in its own degradation, so wouldn't show the difference so clearly.  But there is one aspect of the poor behavior it might show adequately. I noticed that if I take a window and move it vertically ever so slightly - what I imagine to be 1 pixel, but it's impossible to know for sure - then the appearance of any line of text changes, and in some cases loses the bottom row of pixels.   Compare the line "Tablet Mode" (and elsewhere) in the two attached screenshots of the Windows display customization utility taken on the Pavilion, the only difference is that in Take2 I moved the window up.  So what I need to know, while I still have the box for it, should I return the display, or is there a way to get rid of the blurriness?  Thanks.

Recently bought this monitor and when I try to set it to its 1440x900 native resolution the text is very difficult to read in that it is grainy. BTW, I have updated the drivers for my current card but it didn't seem to help.

A:953BW Samsung text is blurry

I would upgrade my graphics card anyways in order to run that native resolution, you'd get better performance all around. 1440 x 900 is pretty demanding for an older card with only 128 megs of vRAM. The picture might look "grainy" because the card doesn't support that pixel aspect ratio or something. A more high-end desktop video card is likely to resolve your issue.

It is code in Android Studio and some buttons in Gmail (that I have found so far).

Hey guys,
I brought my desktop back from school, but I didn't want to worry about transporting the monitor, so I'm borrowing my dad's Viewsonic VX2433wm. At school, I use a Samsung 2343BWX along with a Dell 20" 1680x1050 monitor (unfortunately, I don't know the model). However, my computer seems to act up with it connected.

The most obvious thing is that the text is kind of blurry. I tried adjusting ClearType, but that didn't seem to help. Pictures/color seem to look okay though, and most games look/perform the way they should. I made sure the video card is outputting 1080p, and I also switched to my integrated graphics chipset (Intel HD 3000), but it looks the same. I tried opening AMD Catalyst Control Center, but it tells me that the "Host application has stopped working". Doom 3 BFG edition also crashes once I get in-game.

Here's the weird part: When I connect via HDMI my AOC L32W761, all of these problems go away. AMD CCC works fine, the text looks okay, and everything seems as it should. When I connect only my TV, everything is okay too. Why would this happen? I've switched cables, switched ports, uninstalled/reinstalled the drivers with driver cleaners, and I can sometimes sort these issues out, but I'm pretty stumped right now. I don't think the monitor had issues before.

My setup is this custom build I put together last year:

As I see so many posts all over asking "Why is the text blurry"??, I'll post this thread and maybe it might help you out possibly.
Here's just one example from me in Firefox 4.

With gfx.direct2d.disabled set to True, normal look on the left, and with the enabled blurry look on the right:

Some users, not all, now notice blurry text in Firefox 4 and/or IE9.
*Some may only get this with system specific hardware/drivers. Some may not get the problem at all.*

It basically comes down to (not going to get technically into it) a problem relating to Hardware Acceleration that these new browser now use, and Microsoft's Direct Write/Direct2D/Direct draw components. Pretty much a fix needs to come from MS, not the browsers' developers. (Both browsers now have HA enabled by default).

Until then, a couple workarounds that have worked for me since I encountered it months ago and others, can be implemented.

A particular workaround in Firefox that I use is to type in the address bar -

I'll be careful/OK

Find the Boolean entry - gfx.direct2d.disabled, and set it to True.

You could also un-check - Use Hardware acceleration when available, in Firefox's Options Advanced/General tab.

I leave mine enabled, and just set the Boolean value to Tru... Read more

Additional Observations:
IE9 vs FF4

I get completely identical results either way. When using GDI FF4 and IE9 are equal. When using D2d/DirectWrite FF4 and IE9 are equal.

IE9 has an advantage in that you can change on the fly without a restart. Many pages render in IE7 compatibility mode by default giving the impression it works better, it doesn't, the page has just dropped down to GDI rendering, so it isn't using DirectWrite.
On using About:config gfx.direct2d.disabled.

I have read that this is exactly the same as unchecking "Use hardware acceleration when available". Both of them disable D2d and leave D3d alone. Also changing it in the in advanced preferences over-rides the about:config setting , so you may as well set it in the advanced preferences and forget the about:config setting, unless you have a test that verifies it does something different.
Bug or Feature?

Do a bit of research and you will find that the softer smoother (blurrier) fonts are on purpose and a sign it is working as intended. In fact if driver differences are playing a part at this point, it is most likely the systems that show sharp fonts that have broken drivers because they are reverting to GDI fonts. These new fonts are more typographically correct. DirectWrite fonts are meant to ignore pixel boundaries to flow more naturally and have bidirectional Anti-Aliasing. This makes for a more accurate font representation, that flows, moves and transforms better. BUT it also means... Read more

My new 13 inch Spectre x360 has blurry text in different apps. The most noticable is Chrome and any prompt up. Ive checked a similar threat, bu in this case scaling down the sizing to 110% didnt completely work. It also made everything very small, so its uncomfortable to read. Also i tried adjusting clear type but it wont work. There are some apps that arent blurry though.

Hi all,

I have had my computer (Dell 3000, WinXP) for about 18 months. Today I noticed that the text on the screen looks blurry, but not all of it. It is almost as if someone has taken their finger and smudged a line from top to bottom of the screen (in a few places) so that one or two letters in those (vertical) lines look blurry or smudged. Any ideas as to what is going on and why?

UPDATE: I changed my monitor's refresh rate to 75Hz from 60 Hz and that seems to have solved the problem. I am not sure why it changed itself . .

I've downloaded the most current drivers for my video card (X1600pro) and the text are still blurry. I go into the display area and adjusted the Settings to 32 bit and the screen size to 1680x1050 (I have a Acer 22 in LCD monitor). it's still blurry using either Firefox 3 or IE.

Does anyone know what I can do to fix this issue? Even as I write this, the text is not very dark and crisp.

I should also say that I had to reformat my whole entire computer this last week. Before this, everything was fine.

Display Drivers are:
AMD Radeon HD 8730M

ill include pictures and notice the blurry text on the left and clear one on the right

The blurry text may only be slight but it is annoying when using applications,
any help would be highly appreciated.

Check your display settings, is windows doing a scaling. Mine is set up to scale with 125%.

You can rightclick on your application, then properties then compatibility and disable scaling for high DPI settings.

See if that helps

I suspect that most people use IE so I chose that broswer to display my article in. But IE9 renders the text darker and less clearer. Using compatability mode in IE9 sorts the problem out, and renders the text crisp and clear as it does in Firefox, but then by using compat' mode in IE9 the paragraphs are all over the place and the links bar is not the same.

By "blurry", I mean that the text is not crisp or clear. When you write with a pen and the ink is starting to run out, that's what it looks like. Also the text is slightly smaller, very slightly, and is slightly darker, almost a half-bold, in fact.

The ch's of words appear to be too close together and the l's are not very good. The text appears to be crunched up, making it look blurry or unclear.

I've tried installing the windows7 update to fix this problem but to no avail. It's obviously nothing to do with cleartype because Firefox renders the text perfect. It's just IE.

For an example, although it is not a very good one because it is a snapshot, I have attached a JPG. The image right is the IE, and the image left is the Firefox. Imagine the IE image on the right to be a little less clear than it is and you'll understand what I mean.

Any suggestions?

I might as well add that my article was designed in NOTEPAD++.

This problem started about 3 weeks ago. Every now & then (about half the time on PC) the text on the screen appears to be fuzzy or blurry, almost washed-out as if it were waterbased ink in the rain (see attached screen grab); it almost looks washed-out or sometimes grayed out. If I mouseover and highlight the blurry text and then click outside the selected, fuzzy-text area (de-select the text) or scroll up & down, the font then goes back to normal for a little while (returns very soon). This happens when browsing (via Firefox), in wordpad, Word, Excel, and even the names of desktop icons and when typing in a blog- like this one, text in news articles, captions of photos, etc. are blurry. Note that only the text, never any image, is blurry. Monitor is a Hannspree 23.5" LCD, card is ATI Radeon H 4250, OS is Win 7 Ult 64 bit, 8G RAM, AMD Phenom II X6 1055T 2.80 GHz. PC is homebuilt but has been running perfectly for over a year. I have made no system changes, and have not downloaded any software recently. The entire screen does not show blurry text, usually just a section of it, say 10-20% but in the same area. I read on some blogs where they suggested it could be caused by using the VGA out put into a digital monitor (as mine was ALWAYS set up) so I swapped out the VGA cable for a DVI cable. Same issue. I tried every single resolution choice on the display, still the same. I reinstalled the video card's driver, downloading it from ATI. Still the same. I unch... Read more

A:Some text appears blurry, clears up if mouseover

Click Start > Type "cleartype" [without quotes] and hit Enter

Check "Turn on ClearType" and click Next:

Click the box that looks best to you and keep doing this (4 times) and ultimately click Finish at the end.

Now how's the text everywhere?

I have a new XPS 15 9560 connected to an ASUS MX279h Monitor via HDMI. It's a 1920x1080 monitor.
1) I have the resolution set to 1920x1080
2) I have the text scaling set to 100%
3) I have tried changing the resolution of the laptop monitor, but it did nothing.
4) I tried setting up ClearType, but that didn't help
5) I have read that I should change the HDMI from TV or AV to PC, but I can't find settings for that.
I would appreciate any other ideas you have.
Thank you!

I had no idea where to put this, so general discussion it is;

I have no idea why but in some applications like Chrome, Audacity and Installer wizards, the text is blurry. It's not blurry in any other applications that I've come across yet. I've gone through the personalisation thing in Control Panel with the Display settings, and got to the point where now only select applications and icons are blurry, is there a way to fix this in these applications?

Blurry text and icons in Audacity:
Blurry icons in Paint:
Blurry installer wizard text:

A:Blurry text & icons in select applications

I'm not seeing anything terribly obvious in the screens.
Minor blurriness in a couple but the text in the last shot just looks like the system needs it's cleartype setup properly.
ClearType Text Tuner

For the icons you could try a cache rebuild, but I'm not entirely convinced there is a problem with them.

Also you may want to verify that you system is running at it's optimal display resolution.
