How do I turn off the unread message count on the Windows XP login screen?

Q: How do I turn off the unread message count on the Windows XP login screen?

Hi. I was using my Mother's computer to check my MSN and Hotmail email accounts and now they show up on her Windows Login screen. How do I take them off her XP login?

Preferred Solution: How do I turn off the unread message count on the Windows XP login screen?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My have WinXP Professionsl with Service Pack 2. Now a days it displays 1 unread message at login screen. Totally i have created 3 user names. This PC is disconnected for accessing internet. (If i try to access internet at this time i am unable to access internet also since it is disconnected from internet. 1.5 months back i was connected this computer to internet. By that time while browsing internet in this computer some one else is trying to access this computer remotely). I have not yet configured for Outlook Express also.

Totally 4 computers are connected to this computer among 4 i use to browse internet in 2 computers. As per my observation when i on adsl modem and on that computer by that time i use to see this message.(Usually i never use to on the ADSL Modem).

Some times while shutting down this computer i use to see this message "1 user is connected this computer shutting down will cancel the application (y/n)" This message is use to see in the absence of internet.(ADSL Modem is off.) and at a same time i have not browsing other computers also.)

I have a doubt that this system is remotely connected to internet or is it due to spywares. Plese help me to solve these problems.

With regards,

A:Windows -XP displays 1 unread message at login screen

XP comes with Outlook Express defaulted to install, and I bet the 1 unread message is the "Welcome to Outlook Express" that everyone gets. It's not really an e-mail. Launch OE on all 3 accounts until you find it and "read" it.

I think TweakUI has a tweak that turns off the reporting of "unread" e-mail from OE.

Hi! I've been getting the above issue where the Windows Login screen displays the string "1 unread mail message" when I click on Log Off Administrator and select Switch User to temporarily log myself out of the system when I'm about to take a break. It appears right above the "...programs running" string and beneath the user name (in this case, Administrator), and I want to know how to get rid of it. It started after I installed Windows Live Messenger. I can't recall what exactly I did to make it appear, but I did uninstall the program, yet the issue remains. Any suggestions on how to deal with it?

This is a recent minor problem that has developed when using Outlook.com running on my laptop in Windows 7.

If I have a number of tabs open I have to go to the Outlook tab to see if I have new emails whereas before it used to show in the tab with the number of unread messages showing in brackets.

I'm running Firefox latest version have cleared the cache and cookies, tried a system restore, and tried the Firefox add-on "dispalyunreadtabs..." but that does not seem to have fixed the problem.

I'm sorry is this has been posted about before, but I did look for it. Well, basically I signed in to MSN Messenger into my sister's username (Windows computer) and now next to her name it comes up with "190 unread messages." (mostly junk mail) and she asked me to get rid of it. I can't think of a quicker way than deleting them one by one. I wondered if anyone knew how to get rid of it. Thanks.

I'm using the simple Windows 10 mail app. Under "Accounts" I have an IMAP mail account and it has no indicator (no number) next to the account name indicating number of unread mails. That makes sense because I have no unread mail in that account. It's a gmail based account, and when I access via the web, there's no unread mail shown there either.

However, when I click on the account and I am looking under Folders, the Inbox items has a "1" indicating there's one unread mail note. I can't find any unread mail in the Inbox. I've closed the program and restarted it, and tried resyncing, but the indicator is still there.

Any ideas on where this "phantom" unread count comes from?

A:Windows 10 Mail Indicates a Phantom Unread Message

I do not use the Mail app.
I had a similar situation with my Windows Live Mail.
The icon at the taskbar indicated there was an unread mail.
I read it and then put it away or deleted it. The taskbar icon still showed 1 unread mail.
I had to click the send/Receive button to clear it.

So, in short, it can be just the matter of running "Refresh" option.
Is there such an option in Mail app?.........................Right click inside the Inbox > Refresh.
I have to ask because I have uninstalled Mail app and therefore cannot test it myself.
I don't know if that makes any sense to you using the Mail app.

I have just purchased a new computer and it is running XP. It is a Dell Vostro 1500; nice machine. I allowed my sister to download the Windows Live Messanger onto it to use one day (no Sign-in Assistant, or anything extra, just the messanger), and now, under my name on the welcome screen, it has a message that says "9 Unread Messages" under it! Very annoying!

I uninstalled the Messanger, took it off the startup and still! It shows up before I log on to my computer! I want to disable this feature so that I don't have to look at it! It is not my email, and I don't need this anyway.

A:[SOLVED] Unread mail messages at login

Hi, jtorassa.

This is totally not related to your problem (because I know nothing about either software you just mentioned, so I'll let a more experienced member handle it) but, why don't you have Thunderbird[1] for emails, since it's faster and more reliable?

Also, If you want Windows Messenger why not try Trillian[2], I believe it supports Windows Messenger.

UPDATE: I think I may know the solution to your problem. The problem lies at startup, so you'll need a startup editor such as CCleaner[3]. It's very fast and never causes errors and works on Windows, so it's just right for you.

Good Luck.

Hi, hopefully someone here can help with this.

Recently started with a new company and have a new email account. I am running two laptops, one with Vista Ultimate and Outlook 2007, the other with XP Home with Outlook 2003...having the problem on both machines.

When a message comes in it will remain bolded in the inbox for a short period of time and then it will become unbold as if it was read without me doing anything.

I've checked tools.options.other.reading pain and the automatic message timer is not checked. The weird thing is it is happening on both machines the same way.

Is there a setting on the Exchange server that could be causing this, or possibly my BlackBerry, I am connecting via Web Email on the BB not a RIM server.

My admins are stuck on this.

I just built a new office PC with Office 2013 (updated the My System Specs list). I've been using 2010 up until now so it's been taking some getting used to. I've noticed an issue where many times I'll double-click to open a message, but the message remains showing as Unread. I have to close the message, then double click to open it again before it will change to Read status.

I do not use the Reading Pane, I always keep it turned off. I prefer to open the message separately by double-clicking the message. This is mainly an issue on my personal Gmail which is set up as an IMAP account in Outlook. This happened very seldom in 2010, but now in 2013 it seems to be happening much more often, but not all the time.

My work Gmail is set up using Google Apps Sync (a MAPI account according to the list of Outlook data files). This issue may have happened a couple of times on this account, but I'm not sure. It's mainly a problem with the IMAP personal email account.

I have tried Google searching info about this issue, but it seems like all the hits are about MAKING the email remain as unread, where my problem is that it won't change to read after opening, at random times.

For years, if you are logged onto live.com, Microsoft has been redirecting google search results for msn.com, Technet, MSDN, etc through login.live.com.

1. Sometimes it doesn't work, and it's stalls on login.live.com.
2. When it does work, it tends to kill the browser back button, which gets stuck in a loop, keeping you on the same page. You have to drop down the history menu and select the search results page from it to get back.
3. There have been sites that use live.com and allow you to check a box to keep you logged in but don't respect your choice to stay logged in. MSDN was like this for a very long time.
4. If you had two Windows Live IDs, say, for MSDN and Zune, i.e. business vs. (attempted) pleasure, you could forget about staying logged onto both within the same browser, because it's one or the other at a time.

So with all this fail dating back several years, has Microsoft ever fixed anything? Of course not. Instead, they've double-downed on it by building it into Windows HE and insisting it's the best way to log in. So that makes five.

Oh well. I will continue to use Windows 7 and keep IE around solely for MSDN and other sites I still need that use the horrible Windows Live IDs. A single login was a bad idea in 1996 or thereabouts when it was called Passport, and it's only gotten worse with time as Microsoft has expanded the use of it. It's things like this that almost make me believe the Customer Contempt Policy is a real thing. I joke about it, but it's hard t... Read more

I'm sorry, I've never seen #1 and #2 that you speak of. How exactly can Microsoft control googles search results?

#3 seems to be a problem with the 3rd party sites, not live.com

#4 is valid, and I dislike that as well. I did find a nice workaround though, using in private browsing, you can log in to both (cookies are kept separate). Or you can login with different browsers (chrome and ff, or IE)

How to set Email forwarding based on the time a message sits in a mailbox Unread?

I would like to create a rule in Outlook 2007 to forward any message that has been Unread in my “Inbox” for 15 minutes, to another email address or distribution group. The catch with creating this rule is the time variable, the email sits unread. Once the email is forwarded the message needs to be marked as read, as I only want the email forwarded once.

Any Hints please

I have Windows 2000. I have about 40 computers in the lab I work at. About six of them are having this problem. After logging in, before there is any desktop displayed, we get a blue screen with the hour glass on it. There is no error message. The mouse is not frozen. I can bring up task manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete.

I wonder if this is a memory issue. However, there is about 470MB of free memory on the C: drive. Occassionally, after turning them off for about 5-10 minutes, we can log in once. After that user has logged out, we are back at square one, getting the blue screen after logging in.

These computers are not brand name, they are all clones; attack of the clones, if you will.

Any ideas?

I'm using Windows 7 Pro. I have remove the login pw in my user account now I do not need to do the login and able to use the computer right away. But I found I am using the computer as a user not administrator. How can I skip the login screen and go straight into desktop as administrator. How can I do that? thanks

A:Windows 7 Pro login as admin but no need to have login screen

Hello Smash, and welcome to Seven Forums.

I'm a bit confused with your conflicting statements.

You say that "...now I do not need to do the login and able to use the computer right away.", but then ask "How can I skip the login screen and go straight into desktop..."?

Just to be certain, do you have to log on or not?Log On Automatically at Startup
Are you asking how to log on to the built-in Administrator account to have full access and control?

Hope this may help for now,

Welcome CJGCJG to the windows 7 forums.

Remote Desktop Program is as it says a program on your computer that will allow you full screen remote to another system that authorizes you. There is a way to automatically bring the RDP program up for you to log into another system but it requires that your primary windows system (the one your want to connect from) be set up to automatically boot into you Operating system, putting the RDP program in your startup fold will bring it up.
Using netplwiz, you can set your userid to automatically log in to your local machine and then the RDP would run and you can then log onto your remote system. In fact y ou can save all the credentials for your RDP session and it will automatically login to your remote system.

Is this clear?

hi guys,

i've got a very strange problem with the kids laptop which i'm desperate to sort out as my kid has her exams coming up and needs access to her apps.

Windows loads okay, upto the point when i get to the welcome screen.

Sometimes it gets to the welcome screen, but the user profile icons will never show but then sometimes the icons will show, but when i click on the icon, i can't get to the bit where i can type a password.

If i reboot into safemode, then i can perfectly access everything as normal.

Any ideas guys?

Gidday all,

Next to my XP User name in the logon screen, it says I have 1 unread mail message.
This is not the case - when I have checked, I have had no Outlook Express messages unread (or Hotmail for that matter - our default mail programme is Outlook Express.)

I have rebooted to see if this resets itself, but it doesn't.

Can anyone help please?
