A perhaps impossible task...

Q: A perhaps impossible task...

Okay, this may seem needlessly complicated, but humour me.

I work at a school that has some students using a video program requiring the screen resolution to be set at a particular level (800x600 I'm told). The students do not have access to the Display Properties panel, presumable to stop them screwin around with any of the other settings.

Now, I've been told to find a setting in the windows registry that allows students access to the screen resolution property but NOT the actual Display Properties panel. Is this even possible?!? If so, any ideas on where the hell to find it? The OS is Windows XP.

If this isn't possible, does anyone have any suggestions for other solutions to this problem? Perhaps an app that allows access to certain aspects of the Display Properties settings?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I've been asked to chart some data in Excel and include a trend line BUT my boss wants the trend line broken up over three quarters in the same chart.

So, for example, let's say the data points for Q1 are 3,4,6,8 and then Q2 are 7,4,2,3 and then Q3 is 5,7,9,7, the trend line would be fairly constant and level over the three quarters but she's trying to get us to capture the change between Q1 and Q2 and Q2 and Q3.

I'm not sure that this is possible to do in the same chart and I'm not having much success. Any ideas? Does the question make sense?

A:Impossible Excel Task?

Maybe if you put the 3 quarters in 3 different columns, and chart them as individual data series?
Like this:
Code:
Date Value Value Value
Q1 3
Q1 4
Q1 6
Q1 8
Q2 7
Q2 4
Q2 2
Q2 3
Q3 5
Q3 7
Q3 9

I've reformatted this PC before and it was the easiest thing in the world.
This time however, it simply won't let me, I feel like I've tried everything there is to format the drive and reinstall an OS

Model: Dell Dimension
Added hardware: GeForce 6200 AGP 512mb, 1gb RAM
Note: The computer isn't infected.

As you can see, I've used 5 different copies of windows XP and one of Win7, all of which boot (except the dell copy) and then fail at an early stage.

What is this problem? All of these copies have worked for others, why not me?

There is no problem with the cd drive.

My options to enter in to:

- A previous version of windows
- Windows 7 (I installed without booting from the CD over my last copy of XP, this was AFTER the formatting problems.)
- Microsoft windows recovery console (can't reformat through this either because it only lets me type one letter)
- Continue Windows XP Setup (because I tried to install from inside the OS, when the PC rebooted I got the same errors as above, except this option stayed on my options)

Please help me! Any help would be really appreciated, I don't want to have to pay to get somebody to reformat a hard drive which is supposed to be childsplay :C

Thanks a lot to whoever replies.

A:Impossible task of trying to reformat a PC

I think you will get a lot of replies, but based on your info Axel, it may be that the drive is faulty, has bad sectors or is in the process of completely going belly up (dying the death). Can I ask why you want to reformat in the first place? Could it be these disk related errors were already creeping into your current build..?

A:The Impossible Task of Reformatting my PC

You are really only going to be able to resolve something like this by a process of elimination. Corruption problems in an old computer can be caused by many factors, although my instinct is to suspect you're installing onto a faulty hard drive. A partial install occurring under Win7 doesn't necessarily divert suspicion from the HDD, it may just mean the faulty location(s) on the drive was not being used at that time.

The possibility of faulty source disks only complicates it further.

Potential causes for corruption during installation include HDD or optical drive data cable/connector, failing HDD, optical drive with weakening laser/dirty lens, something that provokes noisy supply rails including capacitor faults in PSU or on mainboard, or a fault that comes & goes like a bad contact on a memory DIMM.

Okay, this is a bit strange and I can't think of any way this could work, but maybe the internet can surprise me...

I have data (text, not numbers) in Sheet1. I concatenate it into Sheet2 as part of a hyperlink. How can I make it so that the whole workbook is only Sheet2 with working hyperlinks? (Yes, I have a practical application of this)

Example:
Sheet1!A1 says: page
Sheet2!A1 says: =HYPERLINK(CONCATENATE("http://www.com/",Sheet1!A1),Sheet1!A1)
Sheet2!A1 actually reads: "page", and it has a hyperlink to "http://www.com/page"

Now, how can I condense the workbook to ONLY Sheet2, maintaining not only the text referenced from Sheet1, but the working hyperlinks as well?
So the workbook will have ONE page with cell A1 reading "page" and hyperlinking to "http://www.com/page"

Does that make sense?
Is it even possible?

A:Excel experts, is this an impossible task?

Solved on excelforum.com here.

Here's the solution:

Public Sub Example()
Dim rngC As Range
Dim lngEndPos As Long
Dim strURL As String, strFriendly As String
For Each rngC In Sheets("Sheet2").Cells.SpecialCells(xlCellTypeFormulas).Cells
With rngC
If UCase(Left(.Formula, 11)) = "=HYPERLINK(" Then
lngEndPos = InStrRev(.Formula, ",")
strURL = .Parent.Evaluate(Mid(.Formula, 12, lngEndPos - 12))
strFriendly = .Text
.Clear
.Hyperlinks.Add .Cells(1), strURL, , , strFriendly
End If
End With
Next rngC
End Sub

I have read a lot of other forums about scheduled tasks running twice, unfortunately the hot fix does not fix the issue.

Hotfix
I checked in C:\windows\system32\tasks, the solution is not here.
I also checked in the registry, was not able to find the duplicate task, I was able to find the task in /windows NT
This happens in a very specific scenario.  We have to update the time triggers for a specific scheduled task based off when a store closes.  They close later on the weekends so the 1st task "autoupdate" will look at an xml file to determine
if the store close time has changed.  Since the store close time changes, it then recreates the "store close" scheduled task with the new time triggers found in the xml.  Autoupdate does this by looking at a .config file we wrote.

Unfortunately this config file had an issue with the path to the store close task not being case sensitive.  When the Autoupdate task kicks off, if replaces the store close task with the correct time triggers, but now the store close task runs twice
at each time trigger
Example
We have a task folder \Hello World
The config file paths out to the task as \Hello world (notice the lowercase w).
This causes the time triggers to kick off 2 task, 1 for (\Hello World\Store close) and another for (\Hello
world\Store close)

I got this to trigger 3 times by changing the .config file to path out to \hello
world.  Now every time the time trigger... Read more

I have a task that launches a very simple command line script to lock the computer if it's been idle for 15 minutes.

I can click run and it activates without problem.

If I let it sit for 15 minutes it transitions from the "ready" state to the "queued" state and the history indicates that the task trigger was engaged and the task was queued.

The behavior is identical to a trigger based on a set time, and appears identically in the history, except that for some reason it queues and does not launch in idle, and will launch successfully with all other trigger combinations.

My task manager is unable to load task status/active tasks at startup.

I get the message: "The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh."

When I refresh I get the same message.

I checked and found that under Microsoft the problem was in the defrag folder. The same message recurs: "The selected task "{0}" no longer exists. To see the current tasks, click Refresh."

These messages did not occur earlier. I can't help wondering if I changed the details of the scheduler through the disk defragmenter program and that caused some kind of conflict.

I tried turning off the schedule and then deleting it from Task Scheduler. I tried recreating it in Task Scheduler and ran into some problems (screen shot 5). All these things work fine until I reboot. Then the problem recurs.

I tried running system file check but there were no irregularities found.

I started using the Task Scheduler to defrag the local disk drives, by (creating task) & (creating basic task) from the scheduler console, That's (2) types of task to make sure it works.

Problem: The tasks do "trigger" after modifying settings, but at "irregular" start times and sometimes not-at-all.
I see the (Synchronize across time zones) check box at the (trigger tab), to wonder if checking the box will cause irregular start times.
Question: Is it necessary  to check mark the (Synchronize across time zones) box, to keep idle start times stable?
Example: A 5:00 AM scheduled trigger that starts at 12:40 PM, to say my OS has "bad" calculation to trigger the task.
Anyway, its been interesting testing (automatic defragmentation), even though I think Microsoft has to "perfect" the task scheduler performance more better.

Hey,
I'm trying to automate some actions on the Internet during night, I got my program written just fine, but one problem still exists. It wakes the PC from sleep mode fine, but never starts connecting to the Internet. It starts connecting when I open the laptop lid, the little blue ring on the connection symbol starts moving. But I need it to connect when I'm not around to open the lid or do whatever it takes. The program is in Python, if I can solve the problem in the beginning of the program.

And second one, how can I make a task based on the event of waking up from sleep? Currently I have it based on the system event of Power-Troubleshooter, event ID 1, which in my opinion gets as specific as it can, but for some reason it doesn't seem to be working. Maybe it's linked to the previous problem, because I want it to wake up in the middle of the night, run the program and then go back to sleep mode.

Main problem is still getting the Internet connected, once the PC is woken up. Thanks!

I'd like to schedule a process to kill a task if the user has been absent from their terminal for a period of time (no keyboard or mouse movement). It's looking like that's not idle time, which is more complex than just absent time, but that's the only

Okay so this problem happened slowly.

First I just recently got internet the day this happened.

Then my computer starts slowing down.

Then applications are not running, saying (null) and that they are not win32 compatible programs.

Then I can't access the task manager, it says it's been disabled by the administrator (Which is ********).

Then my logon screen changes to just a black screen with a plain prompt style logon screen.

Then when I log in it's just my desk top background with no icons or task bar, and I can't do anything, and most times it just immediately logs back off.

It does the same thing in safe mode. I can't do system recovery.

As soon as I logged in I smashed a bunch of keys and got the task manager to pop up and I've been running things through that. I downloaded HJT and have a log here.

This is very urgent, as I have some pretty pricey software on here. I'm a graphic design student with alot of homework and I'm really stressed out right now and would love to get this problem resolved.

I have two routers I usually connect to (work and home) and each have wireless access. That means there are essentially 4 network locations I have listed. I have merged each respective network location (wired and wireless) into their own singular network location - "Work" and "Home".

I also have set up two tasks; one is set to run only when connected to "Work" and the other, to "Home". The 1st maps network drives and the 2nd disconnects the drives. So essentially when I get to work and log in, the scheduler should attempt to map the network drives. When I go home and log in again, it should disconnect the mapped drives.

Currently if I plug in to a physical LAN connection this works...however if I'm running on wireless, the task scheduler doesn't trigger the scripts! I don't know if this has to do with the fact that I'm using merged network locations and it's only using ONE of the profiles or whether it has to do with something else.

So to summarize, the scripts themselves are working just fine - it's the "Start only if the following network location is available" condition that fails when using 1) merged networks and 2) wireless.

A:Task Scheduler failing to start task with merged network locations

Try recreating the tasks. Sometimes task scheduler glitches. So, just try recreating and post again.

Hello

Hello all, im hoping that im able to get an answer for this as its been driving me crazy and I cant seem to find an answer anywhere online. On Saturday my PC was turn on, and once logged into Windows Ive found that all that happens is my windows loads into a blank wallpaper that I have. I have no icons, no task bar and I am unable to bringup the task manager (ctrl-alt-del doesnt work).

After leaving for a full hour, it still hadnt loaded and still unable to acess task manager. I tried a load into the last good config and it still loaded into the above. Ive tried loading into Safemode and safemode /w netowrking and its the same story. The only place I have any acess is Safemode /w an active command prompt, although there isnt any icons or taskmanager.

The last resort is to try a repair via the XP CD which i still have, but before i risk messing anything up, id ideally try to fix my PC. Is there any ideas on whats happened? Its Windows XP with Service Pack3. I dont recall installing any updates but I do have it on auto-install anyway. All help is gratefully welcomed!

A:Loading into blank wallpaper. No task bar / icons/ Task Manager

At the blank desktop press CTRL+ALT+DEL start the Task Manager. Go up to File/New Task (Run) in the Run box type explorer.exe and press enter. If that doesn't work at the Run box or the command prompt type %systemroot%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe and do a System Restore to a time before this happened.

The only problem with this is that you have to open a program rather than using a command to suspending sleep. So I may look into using batch files in the future.

If not, are there any recommended software that does that job?

Hello everyone,

I need to have a task run that will move the contents of a folder from one computer to another over my home LAN. Files get downloaded during the night on one computer and then need to be transfered to another. Usually I am doing this by hand, but then though maybe I could get the task scheduler to do it for me.
I understand how to create a task, however I am having trouble with the action tab. I was thinking that I should start windows explorer (where is explorer located for win 7 x64 machines?) under the action tab, but once I do this I am not sure how to tell explorer to check the source folder, select all the files in it and then move it to the target folder.

I took a look through the tutorials of the forum, but didn't find what I was looking for. If you can help or just point me to more resources that would get me going I would be thankful.

Thanks in advance.
Steve

A:Need help creating a task scheduler task to move files over a network.

So you have two computers, A and B.

A gets the downloads and they are in C:\Downloads (for example).

The name of computer A is CompA and the name of the share for C:\Downloads is Downloads.

You want to move them to computer B in C:\Otherfolder (for example)

If the folder names will always be the same then you can use the move command directly from the scheduled task. You set this up on computer B.

Open Task Scheduler
Under Action, Create basic Task
Name: Move Download Files
Description: Move files downloaded overnight from Computer A to Computer B
Click Next
Select Daily
Click Next
Set date and time
Click Next
Select Start a program
Click Next
In Program/Script box, enter: cmd
In the Arguments box, enter: /c move /Y \\CompA\Downloads\*.* C:\Otherfolder
Click Next
Check the results then click Finish

When this runs, a Command Prompt window will open, the move will take place then the window will close. If you want it to stay open so you can see the results, change /c to /k.

If you want this to run when you're not logged on then under the General tab of Task Scheduler, select Run whether user is logged on or not.

You could also set this up on Computer A by changing things a bit.

Read more

I have installed on my computer a new PC only version of Windows 8. I've not purchased a new PC for about 8 years so its impossible it came with the computer, I built the computer myself.

I remember I brought an upgrade copy of Win8 in error, I got it from PC world. I still have those disk but now I also have this new PC version. I remember going back to PC to tell them I brought it in error I also remember calling the MS helpline.

Can anyone make sense of this? How did this copy come to be working on this computer?

I'm currently wanting to do a clean install but I can't because I can't workout what happened in the past

HELP

Cheers

A:How is this even impossible?

Sounds like you may have an OEM System Builder versions of Windows 8. It is intended to be installed by someone or a company building a new computer that is to be resold. That particular version includes a personal use license which allows anyone to buy an OEM System Builder copy of the software and install it on a (new or old) PC that is intended for personal use. It should have come with an installation key.

Here is some more information on the ZDnet web site.

I have a relatively new Dell XPS 410 running Windows XP Media Center Edition. I am extremely exasperated over a problem that seems unfixable. Every time I start the computer, I get a pop-up appearing right before the user log on screen. It says "Fixed" and will not let me exit out, so I can only perss "OK" to bypass it. The log on screen is normal and any user can be selected to log on. But, when selcted to log on, it loads personal settings, flashes the desktop and immediately logs off and saves the settings. I can not get to the desktop, so I can not scan for viruses or delete files. I really don't want to hear the computer is forever inoperable. Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi! I'm new here -- noticed that a few people had the same problem I'm having with IE Pop-Ups, so I thought I'd look for some help. Spyware scans and pop-up stoppers couldn't cut it and my virus scanner finds nothing wrong.

Though I can only check back here every now and then, and not on the weekends (I apologize in advanced for slow replies), I was hoping that someone might have some ideas on where to go to fix this!

Hey guys it's me again with my annoying and those that seem to be impossible-to-fix-problems.

Well 3 months ago i bought an AMD 5600+ Dual Core and i had lots of problems since then, believing it was defective, i wrote to AMD support and requested an RMA. My replacement arrived today. It fixed LOTS of random crashes and my computer was able to boot up properly with both rams placed on in dual channel. I went to play on Soulstorm, it crashed, sometimes half way through a game or sometimes about 5 minutes into the game. I went on another game which is Company of Heroes, it crashed too.

The only reason i tested these 2 games was because they crashed most of the times when i had the defective processor.I thought it was the RAM but i thought it wouldn't make any sense because while waiting for my replacement to arrive, i put in my old AMD Athlon 3500+ and it worked fine with EVERY SINGLE games so it couldn't be the RAM and it can't be the replacement either. Not knowing what else to do, i took one stick of ram out, and guess what? It worked like a charm ! I really have no idea what's going on inside but if anyone had been through this or anyone who knows how to fix please help and....ermm if it works you'll be able to rest assured that a person on earth is grateful and just wants to kill you with hugs XD

I have a folder in my external terabyte that appeared some time ago. I can not delete it with any software. I tried to delete with DOS and it says all the same. The problem is that it will not let me downgrade it to a write-able format. It seems to be locked in READ ONLY status. I have attempted to take ownership of the drive and the files, but I can not get rid of it. When I first noticed it, it was random letters. When I tried to delete the file it turned into many many "Z's". When I ran the DOS delete protocol it changed into 6 "Z's"; with in that folder is a empty folder called "Update". Since then I have not been able to do anything about it. I don't know what to do. I even downloaded a program called Delete on Boot, and still no success. I have been coming here for about a year when I caught the Rogue Internet Security 2010. It was since then, 12/30/09 the day that i reformatted to yield to the virus's victory that the file first appeared in the external hard drive. I am wits end and I know someone out there can help me. Please tell me what to do. I was told that it was very complex and destructive hack file. Am I infected again?

So I was using my computer yesterday and it was completely fine. I turned it on today to find that all my files on my desktop were sorted by alphabetical order and the desktop was black. The next thing was a popup appeared saying that Microsoft Mouse and Keyboard Center has stopped working. The taskbar is completely empty and only shows the windows icon, date, time, volume etc. The resolution seems to be messed up and most things appear a bit blurry. Task manager does not show anything under any of its tabs and search is not working at all. Many of the windows functions are not working and it seems that data that was saved in my browsers were completely erased. If anyone has any possible solution for this I'd really appreciate it

I faced quite an odd issue. I created task for starting Transmission-QT at system start.
I enabled Task History and there all seems fine.

But really program doesn't start. In "Last run result" field of Task Scheduler I get a strange error 0x41301.

I googled it and discovered that it means "Task is already running". Surprisingly I found this program in running tasks just after system boot but no GUI is shown. Only the process itself is running.

But after some time it dissapeared from Task Manager and then nothing happens.
I googled this error and tried all the proposed solutions: I set up option "Log on as a batch job", I specified "Start in" parameter explicitly in task definition, but had no luck.
Anybody have any thoughts about this?
Thank you in advance.

Hi,

New here. I'm using a Scheduled Task to fire a very simple bat file that pulls, compresses and pushes a set of files to a different network directory. The bat file runs fine manually. On a networked desktop I have set up the task to run at about 5am est (waking the machine), as highest authority, when connected to the network, even when user is logged off and such. The task history tab shows 'Action complete' and 'Task complete' as anticipated but there are no new files (or the log that is created) as expected. I've verified the paths in the bat file. I'm confused about the "history" interpretation.

If the task/action complete successfully - what exactly does that mean?! As I mentioned - I can run the file manually with success - the files are completed and exist. It seems when the machine is logged off and asleep - it will wake up, run 'something' and show success.

Any suggestions to help trouble shoot are greatly appreciated. I wanted to run the task 'at logoff' but seems that is not readily available due to possible corruption/hanging and preventing that type of trigger from happening. Logon may become my option next - I just didn't want to stress the network in anyway if everyone is at once - but it is actually a very small office of users.

Sorry for the long post.

John

A:Scheduled Task history indicates task completed successfully but....

Just an update - I can run this bat file manually but the file will NOT run automatically - even IF the PC is powered up It is set to run at the highest authority, wake if asleep and connected to the network. I hope someone has some ideas - I'm about at a loss. All forum searching I already have covered. Thanks in advance.

P.S. Is there a thread to this I can read responses? Someone responded to me and I received an email - but when logging in I only see my single question here....just curious.
