Computer is stuck in dual monitor mode and will not display my Samsung monitor

Q: Computer is stuck in dual monitor mode and will not display my Samsung monitor

I recently got a monitor from one of my friends saying that it was broken. Its a Dell 19in LCD. I have my main monitor a 22in Samsung wide screen So i just plugged it into the second DVI slot on my graphics Card. When i went into the display config i set up dual monitors just to see if it was working. The dell monitor would blink up then quit on me.

When i was messing with the Display settings I made the Dell. Not my Samsung the Default Monitor. I unpluged the broken Dell and restarted. Now my computer regognizes the Samsung as the second monitor and it just shuts it off and recognizes nothing as the main.

I managed to get it into safe mode and it recognized the samsung but every time i try go back to Normal Start the screen is blank.

How can i get it to recognize the Samsung as my main?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have HP Desktop Tower Pavilion with windows 10, I had two HP S2031 monitors in dual mode, worked fine. One of them died, I got a good deal on a larger HP 27er monitor.  I hooked it up, they were both working fine ... it was using a default monitor
setting ... and then yesterday the computer downloaded some updates, and in doing so, it downloaded the driver for the HP 27er and installed.  The next thing that happens is the older HP S2031 starts to go dark ... like it is going into sleep mode, and
then it is totally black.  On reboot, it starts up with both monitors working, but within seconds of reboot the HP S2031 goes black again. The HP S2031's buttons do nothing, other than the power button, which turns it off and on, but that is it.
I have done all troubleshooting, I did not even have them set up to sleep, all settings are at NEVER.  In coming here, I have done all the fixes I can find for similar  that are posted for similar issues, the Windows Key + W... nothing.
The create new power plan ... nothing.  the device manger>display adapters>disable then enable ... nothing.  and lastly Start>Control Panel>System>Device Manager>display adapter>driver tap>update ... still nothing.  HOW
DO I GET THE HP S2031 MONITOR TO NOT BE IN SLEEP AND HAVE BLACK SCREEN.  I can not figure this out and am not finding any fix.

This may be a bug in ATI video drivers but I am not sure. After waking up the computer from sleep with two displays setup, monitor 1 does not wake up. Unpluging monitor 2 from PC results in monitor 1 to wake up.

A:Monitor 1 in dual display mode not waking up after SLEEP

Yes, it's likely to be a driver problem. If you can download the driver to the desk, rightclick it for 'troubleshoot compatibility' and choose the Vista driver.Rating posts helps other users

i have only one monitor, and somehow it is being treat as though its the secondary monitor in a dual monitor set up.

i cannot view my start menu, or view any programs being opened, as when i try to open them, they presumeably open on the phantom primary monitor.

even when i try to open display settings, i cannot see the box.

i am able to move my mouse to the left border of the screen and move it off into oblivion, and occasionally drag random folders and short cuts over to view.

if anyone can walk me through how to fix this (im not very good with computers, beyond playing games it would be appreciated.

im on my gf's mac right now to write this post, as my pc cant do anything at the moment.

I have a dual monitor setup, where the laptop is hooked to a 2nd monitor (TV) thru an HDMI . I primarily use the 2nd monitor. Can I blank screen the 1st (laptop screen) monitor, yet continue to use the 2nd monitor with the lid open for access to the keyboard?(I noticed with changed settings in Win7 control panel, I can close the lid without cutting off [sleep, hibernate or shut-off] the computer and had to reduce the 2nd monitor display to fit the visible screen. But to use the keyboard one has to open the laptop lid, which kicks in the 1st screen)Thank you

this is a many faceted and increasing in facets issue (ill try to make it as short as possible);

the male side of my video cable connection (the part on the motherboard) had bent pins; the pins were unbent and the cable was able to fit back in, BUT

the picture was garbled--wrong colors, moving lines, etc. the people at a tech store told me the video cable was pinched and knowing that it had been jammed in the hinge for a while, i believed it extremely feasible. I finally ordered a new video cable but replaced it, and to no avail. the picture may have been slightly better--but not significantly if so; additionally (and im not sure if it was this way the first time as well) the computer was displaying at the size of the external.

i restarted, and reazlied that the laptop screen displayed nothing at startup, until logged in--exactly like the external. i figured that at least a portion of what was going on was the computer was sending the external screen signal to the laptop.

things i've tried:

-reseating both ends of the new video cable MANY times
-turning the computer off, taking out battery, holding start button, putitng battery back in, restarting
-every variation of screen resolution/external monitor setting
-pluggin in the external, putting laptop to sleep, unpluggnig external
-reinstalling video/image drivers
function key combinations

I am using a 22" screen for my primary screen and the laptop lid open for a secondary screen. The main screens resolution is 1680x1050, I can set it to anything I want and it's always using the full screen. The laptop screen on the other hand will only use the full screen if it's at 1400x1050 resolution (max for that screen, IBM Thinkpad T43). With the large 22" screen I have no trouble reading the screen at high resolutions, the screen is huge, with the little 14" screen though I have to strain to read the screen at 1400x1050.

The problem is when I set the laptop screen to anything lower than 1400x1050, it uses less of the screen. Preferrably I want it at 1280x1024 or 1024x768 (I dont know which I want yet as I can't see the freaking screen at that resolution). At 1280x1024 for instance the useable screen is just a box in the middle, so the "1280x1024" is still barely readable for me cause it's shrunk from full screen, plus it's just annoying only using a portion of the screen.

I have played with the ATI Control Center, the Thinkpad display settings and windows display settings and just cannot get this thing to go full screen at lower resolutions when docked and using the external monitor.

Anyway to resolve this?

Ok so recently my computer stopped working completely. Regardless of how many times I reboot and try to re-plug the monitor cables, etc. it will still just turn on then say the monitor's in power save mode. Now, in the past when I started my comp it would beep a pleasant once then start up. Now that the monitor's stuck in power save mode when I start it there is one long beep then 3 rapid ones following it. Anyone know if that means anything? Thanks in advance.

This small 2-in-1 works using the HDMI port when connected to my (older, 17 inch) external flat panel monitor, in this case using an HDMI to VGA converter unit. If I connect it to a somewhat old (CRT, not flat panel) Samsung TV using a standard HDMI cable I cannot get it to display to the TV. I have another (work supplied) larger Dell laptop (Inspiron 15 3000) that can display to this TV, using the same HDMI cable that won't work with the Inspiron 11. Both laptops have Windows 10.
The HDMI port on the 11 works, as does the cable.
The TV can work with at least some laptops, since the 15 can display to it, and I must have the TV input selection correct (HDMI2).
Do some laptops simply not work with some TVs? For example, maybe the Inspiron 11 can't be set to a correct resolution that matches what the TV needs, but the Inspiron 15 can? Maybe I need some kind of driver update for the 11, or have not found some setting I need to change?

So here's the situation. Not sure if this should be in the XP section or the Video Card section since it has to deal with a graphics display. (Please move if necessary)

I have an ATI Radeon 9800 128 on WXP SP2.
I have 2 monitors and the display of Monitor #1 does not retain the settings. It reverts back to the lowest default after shut-down and start-up. (Every time)
I have to change the display for Monitor #1 every time back to the highest setting.

Now, I have 2 LCD monitors.
Monitor #1 - DELL 2005FPW - Wide Screen 16:9
Monitor #2 - DELL 19" - Standard 4:3

So I am starting to think that the wide screen monitor, monitor #1, is just not going to retain its settings because I have a standard width monitor as monitor #2.

Is this correct?
Do I need to upgrade the graphics driver?
Is this something with XP?

Thanks in advance

Hi Guys,

I was hoping you would be able to help me out!

When moving windows around on the BenQ I get really bad stuttering and lag also the window I move around has a lot of tearing to the point i can see to the background while moving the window. Here's a gif of what happens.

Now when I set the BenQ as main monitor this resolves everything however I don't want the BenQ to be my main monitor as I just want to use it for YouTube / web browsing / Netflix

Hey All,

I have recently put together a dual monitro setup for my desktop computer. Both monitors are identical 22 inchers. I am running Windows XP pro and I believe the graphics card is an ATI Radeon 4650 or an ATI Radeon 6450..

I have one monitor hooked up by DVI, and one monitor hooked up by VGA. Both are hooked up to the one single video card. I've been through the XP troubleshooting, I have the "extend my desktop blah" box checked under my display properties, and I'm pretty positive the screen scaling is set to "stretch" because thats what I've always had it at.

The problem... the monitor hooked up by VGA displays everything and allows me to change the resolution with no problems, but the picture/screen doesn't fit to the top/left corner of the monitor. It is like the screen is pushed down from the top by about 1/2 inch or so, and it is just a black space running horizontally on top of what the screen is displaying. So when I put a full screen web browser on the second monitor, the top sets against the black space and the bottom of the browser is extended past the bottom of my monitor screen space to where I can't see..

I have moved the monitor's "Vertical Position" by adjusting the settings on the actual monitor. Still didn't work. Got it close, but it is still cutting off my image at the bottom of the monitor. When I "auto-align" the monitor, it is pushed back down to make the black space appear at the 1/2 inch height..

I have a RADEON X600 256MB HyperMemory card. It has DVI, VGA, & an S-Video output. It will dual display on the s-vid and either of the other outputs...or the VGA and the DVI together if both are monitors (no TV's). The DVI will work on the TV (42" Plasma). BUT, then the vga is disabled. With the monitor plugged into the VGA port the DVI is disabled for a TV. Again, two MONITORS will work, just not a monitor and a TV. (It can tell).
I want tor run an extended desktop on the TV (with the DVI HD output) and my flat panel monitor with the VGA. Can anyone recommend a video card that will do that?

A:True dual Monitor & TV Display

I have an nVidia GeForce GTS 240, and i can do the display you are asking about. My current setup is DVI to a 19" monitor, and VGA to a 22" HDTV ( that tv only takes VGA ) But i also have a 42" plasma TV and DVI will work with that with a VGA connection to my monitor as well. My graphics card has an s-video, and 2 DVI ports ( i convert the DVI to VGA when using my smaller TV )

Hope this helps!

I previously had dual monitors and one of them burned out. I am trying to replace that monitor with one we had sitting around in the office not being used. I connected it and triple checked that everything is plugged in right, but the computer is not detecting it. I have gone through all the display devices to update drivers but, again, the monitor is not being detected. I have also tried to follow the steps here but in the setting tab I dont have the drop down menu to select multiple monitors. It's as if the monitor is not plugged in to the computer at all. The monitor has power and currently displays "Dell 2: Digital Input Self Test Feature Check; Red Green Blue White"

Do I have to install monitor software or something?

Thanks for the help!

I have a question in regards to my dual monitor system. No one seems to be able to get the fix for this. I can tell you that it worked fine forever and then one day it just does not work properly. Using my computer with Extened Display Windows 7 works fine. Computer Goes to Sleep hit the space bar or move the mouse and it wakes up with the same view which is correct. Main Monitor on the Left and Extened Display on the Right. So No Probelm. I switch over to another computer with my IOGEAR KVM Switch which is Dual View work on another computer Dual View. No Problems. Here is where the Issue comes in. When I switch back to the other computer it comes up but the main monitor on the left is now Blank like its powered off and my desktop is now on the monitor on the right. I goto the display options under resolution and hit the detect button. It now moves my desktop from the right monitor to thte left primary monitor and all is well. Hi Guys,

My problem is simple:
I have an external monitor, actually a TV connected via S-Video cable coming out of the back of my video card.
My TV is my second desktop. All of that is fine.
The problem comes in when I log off or "switch users" (there are no other user profiles on my computer - I only log off or switch user to make sure the kids can't get on without my permission - they don't know my logon code), the TV loses the picture and goes grainy, but when I log back in, the TV does not "kick in" again.
The only way to get the TV to display the second desktop after logging out or switching users seems to be to restart the computer entirely. If it reboots, it picks up the TV as second monitor again. If you simply log in again, it does not pick up the TV as second monitor.

Is this related to some setting that says the TV should only be the second monitor on the admin's account and not for "all users" or something? Or is it a glitch??

Any idea of the cause and any idea of a fix or workaround?

Thanks, it drives me nuts to always be restarting my computer to watch a video on my TV......

By the way, in all cases, the "Display" settings in control panel show the TV as the second monitor. But looking at the actual TV, all you see is a grainy screen that obviously is not being fed any clear signal.

Thanks, I'm in your debt if you answer,

My monitor is stuck in power save mode ever since i restarted my computer the other day. I've tried unplugging everything, repluging, and restarting. I was reading that sometimes the monitor wont get a power on signal from the PC if the lithium battery on the motherboard is bad, so i took that out. I've tried unpluging the RAM, starting it with just one stick, then the other and also starting the PC without either RAM stick in. However, when i did this it didn't beep like it should signaling that there is a problem with my RAM (because it was gone). I don't think its the monitor though because i can use it in digital with my xbox (computer is hooked up to the analog port.) I don't have another computer that I can try the monitor on in analog though.

A month or so ago my monitor started going into power save mode and wouldn't come out without a manual restart. I tracked down that it was happening only when i was using a lot of graphical power, so i opened up my PC and cleaned out the dust (of which there was a shameful amount) and put everything back together...problem solved. I think my graphics card was overheating due to lack of ventilation brought on by excessive dust build up on the cooling fans. Well now its doing it again, except permenatly and a restart doesn't fix it. I tried switching out my graphics card (nvidia 7950) with an old nvidia 5000 series card but that didn't help either. Hello to all and thanks for helping.
Did a very dumb thing in retrospect. My computer running windows vista is connected to my flat screen TV with a HDMI cable because monitor is broken. Windows did an update the other day when I turned on my computer. After completing the update Google Chrome repeatedly crashed. I thought it might be a virus and tried to troubleshoot starting with a full scan running Windows Defender in safe mode.
I used the msconfig to select minimal safe mode, and restarted the computer, not realizing the drivers for the external monitor would be disabled. So now I have no way to see the screen that is loading. Is the first screen the logon page, the desktop page in safe mode, or some other page because I keep pulling out the plug to shutdown the computer. In addition I have used the F8 key along the way so don't know if that has altered the original sequence of how pages load. One other thing....I have two users on my computer, so don't know if I have to first choose the user. One requires a password the other doesn't. I was using the one with the password when I wrecked my computer.
I have tried to logon with no luck.
After I think the page is loaded I left click the mouse on the touchpad and then type in my password.
From there I have tried many combinations of keys and shortcuts. I hit the windows key+R , thinking the the run window will pop up. Press the delete key to clear the contents of the run box and left cli... Read more

Try this.
Turnoff and unplug the monitor from the power supply and disconnect the cable to the computer.
Wait about 2 minutes, plug the electrical supply back in, turn the monitor back on and let it run its selftest.
Hopefully this will reset the monitor and you will get the no signal notification.

Whenever I turn on my computer, the monitor doesn't turn on, but the computer does. When I turn on my monitor, it says "entering power save mode". Whenever I press any other buttons on my monitor, it says "there is no signal coming from your computer" and tells me to use my keyboard or mouse to wake it up and switch to another source. I've tried that, but it didn't work. I've tried unplugging it and plugging it back in, but that didn't work. How do I fix this?

Always include exact PC model and version of Windows in your posts.
Can you test this monitor on a different PC or a different monitor on this PC?
How do you know the PC turns on if there's nothing on the monitor?

I left my computer running overnight as I usually do. When I went back to it this morning, it was stuck in power saving mode. When I rebooted, everything looked fine and the windows logo loaded but when I reached the login screen it went directly to Power Saving mode and got stuck there.

I am posting this from Safe Mode with Networking.

A:Monitor stuck in Power Saving Mode.

Go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Power Options\Edit Plan Settings and change things to Never.

Hey all, any help you could give would be greatly appreciated. Basically I have a USB keyboard on my desktop (using laptop at the moment) and I was unable to get into safe mode normally because the keyboard was only activated once windows had started up. Anyway, so I went into msconfig and set it to automatically start into safe mode (it will do this on every restart automatically - simply restarting the computer will not make it start up normally). Unfortunately, now it's stuck because for some reason my PC does not detect the (normally) working monitor while in safe mode! so now I have no monitor with which to see my way out of safe mode, and it's now stuck like that. Any suggestions...?

After hooking up a new monitor, Dell 2010H, and it not leaving power save mode, I tried re-hooking up my old monitor, but my old monitor wouldn't leave power save either; so I tried powering down by holding in the power button (because, of course, without a monitor I couldn't navigate to shut the computer down properly) and then starting it back up. I have also tried the power button on both monitors them selves and when I do the indicator lights come on and then quickly turn to amber--sleep mode I assume. Everything was working fine until I hooked up the new monitor.

I've read the previous posts concerning Monitor Self Test. However, this particular issue may not fit in with them.

All I did was plus in my desktop to a monitor and turn it on. Everything was fine, the monitor was up and running video and all. I shut it down normally, forgot I had to do something... went to turn it back on and voila - Monitor Self Test. That horrid little floating box is causing far too much stress.

I've unplugged, jiggled and restarted all in different orders and still nothing. If anyone can help me I'd greatly appreciate it!!

Hi there, my monitor is stuck in power save mode all of a sudden and my mouse and keyboard cant activate it. I know the monitor is good because I just tried it with another computer no problems. I have an old Dell Dimension 3000. Im thinking the RAM is bad on my computer because that is the only thing that i have changed in my computer lately and with my ignorance I bought some of the cheap no-name ebay ram.
Is there any signs to know it is the ram causing the video not to power up? The computer boots up as if things are perfectly fine, lights are on, fans come on, disk trays can open and close.....with my experience with bad RAM the computer makes some beeping noises and fails to boot up anything.

I would try my old OEM ram, but i dont have it available anymore. I plan to just try some new RAM but before I drop the money for it, are there any other possibilities of other things going bad? i dont have a video card, just on board.

I have also tried resetting the MOBO battery as well with no luck.

Thanks for any help.

The Dell 3000 has diagnostic lights on the back.. you should have all 4 green,, if there are any yellow then you have a problem and you can check the color code combination here for a possible answer.

I have just moved my works PC to home and have reconnected all cables again but am having a black monitor screen, with orange on/off switch and not green.

At the back of the box the monitor cable has a male blue connector,, this is connected to another female blue connector then a larger white connector which goes into the box.

If you take the female blue connector/white connector off the the monitor displays the four coloured boxes for self test. When you replace the female/white connector it goes blank again in the power safe mode.

I cannot understand why it is not working and why it is going into power safe mode as nothing has changed and i am only 2 mins from work.
Can someone help as I am not brill.

I changed monitors on an XP computer and had it working fine until I changed the resolution to something this computer OR monitor just couldn't resolve.

Now the monitor is in a state of balck screen except for in the middle saying Auto Detect is on (Analog) the also shows "Cannot display this video mode", Optimum resolution is 1920x1200 60hz

The screen cannot be taken off this no matter what I tried.

Appreciate any help, thanks.
