Q: openssh not working correctly...help

Running Win XP MCE SP2
Cable connection
motorola surboard modem
linksys router

A few weeks ago I installed openssh on my computer using http://sshwindows.sourceforge.net/download/. I set up the group and passwd files, followed the instructions etc. Forwarded port 22 from my router to my computer and configured my firewall (zonealarm) to let traffic through. Everything worked fine until I screwed something up and had to format my hard drive. I've been trying to setup openssh the same way I did when it worked and I just can't get it to work. I've tried turning off the firewall and also connecting the modem directly to the computer, it just won't work. I have the user accounts setup with passwords. When i use putty to connect to my computer from that computer things work out but outside computers can't connect to it. I open putty, tell it to connect to my ip at port 22 using ssh and it brings up the connection window and asks me for a username, which I type in, and then it immiately asks for a password without showing the welcome/warning message it's supposed to show. When I type in the password, it tries to connect for a few seconds and then simply tells me "Access Denied".

Any suggestions? Any diagnostic tools or anything of that sort I can use to figure out what the problem is?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

I am trying to setup OpenSSH on XP and near the end I am getting kind of lost. I will post the tutorial and what I need help with below.
Tutorial: http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/cygwin-sshd.html
8) important Pop a cygwin gwindow, harmonize Windows user information with cygwin, otherwise they cannot login
mkpasswd -cl > /etc/passwd
mkgroup --local > /etc/group

If your XP logs on to a domain, you most likely have to manually edit /etc/group. See this page.

If your XP logs on to a domain, you may want to edit /etc/passwd to replace /home/username by //unc_server/path_to_home
(thanks to Geoff Thomas)

mkpasswd creates a password file from Windows' user list, click here for more details.
mkgroup creates a group file from Windows' user list, click here for more details.
Thanks to John Skiggn of Cingular Wireless in Redmond, Washington for his tweak on domain user /etc/group
http://pigtail.net/LRP/printsrv/passwd-group.html

What was the last step on the tutorial that you did? Also, is the PC you're using in a domain?

ok Ive been studying this ssh service. Im running Fedora Core 3 and it is active on my machine...........or at least a "pgrep ssh and pgrep sshd" command show it running and the ssh daemon is listed as active in my list of active services.

My question is........if it is running on my linux box does the other windows boxes within my network have to be running it to connect to me?

If so or if not....how do I configure this thing? The information that I have found about it so far reads like stereo instructions in another language. I really need some help here!

Hiya

There are two related vulnerabilities in the challenge response handling code in OpenSSH versions 2.3.1p1 through 3.3. They may allow a remote intruder to execute arbitrary code as the user running sshd (often root). The first vulnerability affects OpenSSH versions 2.9.9 through 3.3 that have the challenge response option enabled and that use SKEY or BSD_AUTH authentication. The second vulnerability affects PAM modules using interactive keyboard authentication in OpenSSH versions 2.3.1p1 through 3.3, regardless of the challenge response option setting. Additionally, a number of other possible security problems have been corrected in OpenSSH version 3.4.

Systems Affected

OpenSSH versions 2.3.1p1 through 3.3

I did a search, but didn't quite see anything posted that might relate to my problem.

At one point early last year I installed OpenSSH on an xp business box I have at home. I set it up so that it was an automatic server that would start when the box turned on. I used Putty on my laptop, and through port forwarding on my WRT54G v8 router, I had it all working perfectly and could connect using Putty on my laptop to have a tunnel to my home comp. Last week the hard drive died and I just bought a new one to put in it, and went through the process of re-installing XP. I then reinstalled OpenSSH, put in all the same settings as it had before (detailed notes from when I did it the first time) and fired up Putty and it wouldn't connect. I thought maybe it was the box, so I tinkered and tweeked to no avail. The only firewall I have running is the XP, and I added OpenSSH and it's ports to the firewall exceptions. The ports are forwarded correctly on my router, and everything in Putty looks ok. After still more timed out connections I opened the routers incoming log and noticed that there were no requests to the port I have OpenSSH set to. I thought that this was odd, as I also have PCAnyWhere installed, and it works perfectly, and I can see in the log the incoming requests for that. So now I am stumped. I have tried Putty on 3 different computers, using three different connections, and still nothing. Any ideas?

Hiya

The CERT/CC has received confirmation that some copies of the source code for the OpenSSH package were modified by an intruder and contain a Trojan horse.

We strongly encourage sites which employ, redistribute, or mirror the OpenSSH package to immediately verify the integrity of their distribution.

An intruder operating from (or able to impersonate) the remote address specified in the malicious code can gain unauthorized remote access to any host which compiled a version of OpenSSH from this Trojan horse version of the source code. The level of access would be that of the user who compiled the source code.

Hi folks,

today I setup Cygwin and OpenSSH on my rented server. I following the usual direction and everything seemed to be fine.

I tested locally using ssh localhost und voila - connection, login, everything fine.

Then I tried to login from my laptop and got no connection. I checked the firewall - and it was off. Both the server provider's firewall and the local windows firewall were off (I turned them on afterwards, however).

Ok, I thought, let's connect locally, so I tried ssh <hostname> and ssh <server-ip> (On the server itself!). Could not connect.

I tried a lot of combinations, changed the port, used ListenAddress to explicitly bind to the local ip, looked at hosts.allow and hosts.deny etc. Actually one can see slight differences with netstat -a, but the effect remains the same: Using localhost and 127.0.0.1 I can connect, but not using the IP.

Server OS is Windows Web Server 2008.

Any ideas?

Thanks for hints or any idea how I can debug this. SSH debug mode shows no output, so it really seems no connection gets established.

Regards,

JavaBird

A:Cygwin OpenSSH doesn't listen on actual IP, only on 127.0.0.1

Does the software have an option to change what ports it is listening on? Is their a check mark that you could of over looked that would cause it it only be listening on the loop back address?

A security vulnerability found in a widely-used open-source software has been described as "the most serious bug."
A major vulnerability has been found and fixed in OpenSSH, an open-source remote connectivity tool using the Secure Shell protocol. The flaw was the result of an "experimental" feature that allows users to resume connections
According to a mailing list disclosing the flaw, a malicious server can trick an affected client to leak client memory, including a client's private user keys.
The affected code is enabled by default in OpenSSH client versions 5.4 to 7.1. The matching server code was never shipped, the mailing list said.
The flaw doesn't have a catchy name like some other previous flaws, but disabling client-side roaming support fixes the issue.
The flaw, which is said to be years old, was found by Qualys' security advisory team.

Wolfgang Kandek, chief technology officer at Qualys, confirmed in an email that the company disclosed the bugs to the OpenSSH team on January 11, and commended the team for working "incredibly fast" to get a patch out three days later.

"Developers and admins are advised to regenerate and rotate keys to systems they touch, whether for hobby [or] weekend projects, or more sensitive servers -- including Github," he added.
Bottom line? Patch now, and patch fast.

Hello all,

I've started this threat because I have RAM problems.
The problems start by how much RAM my task manager sees (which differs from day to day, the numbers vary from 250 mb to 8 gb when I should have 16gb) and that when used it won't empty correctly, so after my browser (firefox atm because chrome slobbers up all the RAM) closes I sometimes get only 50% of my RAM back, even when I close all processes. The specs are below and I would deeply appriciate your help.

Hello All,
I have a client whose computer has stopped reacting to "alt-tab" hot key (ie. switching between screens).
Let's say you are in IE (any app does the same)
Currently, if you hold down Alt (like you are getting ready to hit tab), it will highlight the File option from the menu screen. It acts just like it would if you clicked on "Alt" once. If you hit "Alt-Tab" it doesn't do anything different.

Things we have done:
1. Tried using the other alt button - same thing
2. Tried installing MS Power Tool for Alt-Tab - same problem
3. Tried installing an app called Alt-Tab Thingy - this was interesting but I didn't catch the full message. It said something like Hot-Keys not enabled or cannot access Hot-Keys.
4. Reboot - same problem

Since then, we have uninstalled the Alt-Tab Thing application and are still stuck with this strange issue.

Windows XP Professional SP2

Anyone have a suggestion?

Thanks in advance.

Hello,

It may have been somehow disabled. Try this:

Go to Start => Run and type in regedit

Navigate to:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Look in the right-hand pane for the String 'CoolSwitch'
If it has a Value of 0, right-click on 'CoolSwitch' => click 'Modify' and change the Value to 1
OK and exit.

A friend of mine has recently gotten a computer and has the XP Professional system on it. I told her I would try to set up everything I needed to on it. I had made her a e-mail on obth outlook and hotmail. Now if any of the three people using the computer try to receive what is in their inbox they can't. She can get to the website itself and get the to inbox and then click on the unopened mail and nothing happened. Normally I've seen where you click on the unopsened mail and then the browser will go straight to "done" or it would freeze but in this situation it just does nothing. I have no idea what to do and she would really like to use her hotmail. Someone told me it could be because of the security blocks on the Internet to stop her daughter from getting to unwanted website but I am not sure if that effects this problem. Any suggests of what to do would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

A:Hotmail not working correctly!

IF she has msn messenger 6.2 that is the problem. ALot of freezing up in hotmail.

Uninstall msn 6.2 This seems to be the problem. I was unuable to install version 5 for xp from oldversion.net.
With 6.2 gone hotmail works fine or keep messenger running 6.2 running and hotmail does not freeze. I prefered to uninstall it.
WINDOWS messenger does not interfer with hotmail wether you run it or not.
Bottom line,, get rid of msn windows 6.2 or run it all the time. As soon as the msn fix is done , then you can reload msn 6.2 if you want it back.

This PC isn't meant for games, however, I used to be able to play X-Com 2 on minimum with no issues. Then the power supply was interrupted while it was on and ever since it has seemed to be a little slow, and can no longer run X-Com without horrible framerate issues. Initially, it seemed to be a hard drive problem, but a third party check and an extensive system diagnostic check didn't return any issues. I reinstalled the game, but it is still slow, does anyone know what this could be?

Thanks.

My mouse icon is no longer the arrow it is the little hand and I can no longer hightlight text on miscelaneous text. When I left click to try to highlight, the little hand just grabs the page and drags it up/down or right/left. When I want to edit an emali in yahoo, I can't in the middle of a sentence because the little hand won't let me. Again it grabs the whole web page and moves it around. I have noticed this on web pages that are larger than the screen and not only have a vertical scroll bar, but also a horizontal scroll bar. My mouse icon used to be the arrow all the time and that allowed me to highlight anything I wanted. No that it is the little hand, it is very frustrating using my computer. How do I get the arrow back and ditch the stupid little hand?

Thanks.

A:Mouse not working correctly

I figured out what the problem was. On the tool bar at the top of internet explorer (I have IE8) on the left next to the Tools, Safety, Page, Print, and Home icons, there is the little hand icon. There is a little hand icon called the Panning Hand when you put your mouse arrow over it. It was on so I just clicked on it and it toggles the hand off and back to the arrow. I figured it out by accident. I just happened to see the hand when I was going to click on the Home icon and the little hand was highlighted. What an annoying thing to have been dealing with for the past 2 months. I must have clicked on it by accident and did not know it.

I have a Windows XP machine (SP1 and USB upgrade) with 6 USB ports, 4 on the back and 2 on the front. All these ports have worked for the past year that I’ve had the machine. Recently had a hard disk failure and installed a new HD with windows re-installed from the ground up. My Sandisk MiniCruzer is detected automatically as it should be on all the back ports, but when I try the front ports I get an “unable to install USB device” message (I’m not at the computer right now so I don’t have the exact message, but it’s a paragraph that comes up in the yellow word bubble from the taskbar) and then it is listed as “unknown device” in device manager. A window appears after I click on the yellow word bubble that lists six USB ports, with either of the last two in the list (depending on which front port I’ve used) listing “unknown device” in bold letters.

I notice that in device manager there are only four sets of USB root hubs and USB controllers listed. Shouldn’t there be six of each if I have six ports?

The only other USB device I have, a Digitrex digital camera, is also having issues. Though I suspect it’s more to do with the bad quality of drivers and hardware than the USB port. The camera is detected on all 6 ports though, it just freezes when trying to view or download the pictures from the camera. This device did work properly prior to the system failure as well.

I would like to use the front USB ports as it makes life a lot easier than trying to plug the Mini... Read more

Differing error's/codes but same result. I can start and run but games end up crashing anywhere from 5 to 15 min in. Pretty much always when I have started gameplay. Always a graphics error of some kind. Modern warfare says error code 6068, Ghosts says hung device error, and warface just says application stopped working. Games include Call of duty modern warfare (2019), and COD Ghost's, Warface and other smilar fps games. I ran diagnosics on this website on simple scan mode and 14/14 passed. I feel like it matches driver issiues from what I can see on google. On device manager under display adapters (Nvidia GTX 960M) says device is functioning correctly. I have tried a few different drivers for GPU, from both NVIDIA website and Leveno. I feel it is likely a combonation of driver but something else as well. Not an expert but I did buy this laptop preowned it was already updated to windows 10 from windows 8, so I assume it could be some kind of compatabilty issue with OS/ software- hardware. Hi, my AC adapter appears to have a loose connection or something. when I bump my ac adapter my laptop often switches to battery power. I've found that by jiggling the cord I can fix it but sometimes I'm not aware and when playing a game or something it drains quickly and I'll find it shutting down. The loose connection is not on the laptop port, and it's not on the plug itself where it meets the outlet. It's on the female end of the plug where it connects to the box. Is there a way I can find out if the cord is the problem and not the box, and if so would that me less expensive to replace?

Thanks, any info is helpful

Well I lately noticed my firefox is working very badly. Some images dont show up like they should but work fine on IE, sometimes some pages wont load but just sit there and when I use IE they come up in a flash and then I can only open 1 windows of FF.

Also I cant open the extension tab at all it just sits there once I click extensions.

I have a few extensions installed maybe this could be the problem? But how can I remove them if I cant get the tab open?
Thanks

Hello,

I've recently encountered some problems with my web browser and it's basically backing up my home run business for the day because i've been trying to read the forums and fix it myself.

At first the symptoms were .dll errors at bootup. I don't receive them anymore though.

More symptoms acted up when using the browser. I'm not sure if it's been hijacked, but rather, none of the website that I enter ever load. Even if they load, they end up being redirected by adding characters to the end of my address. For example, entering "www.amazon.com" ends up adding "www.amazon.com..." at stays frozen in the status bar. I'm not sure if the characters issue is normal, but this problem is preventing me from loading up any web page including search pages such as google.

I've pretty much only scanned with SuperAntiSpyware and HiJackThis. Then I received some Vundo Trojans under SAS. I'm assuming SAS removed them because I tried using VundoFix from Atribune.org and it never picked up the files. Re-scanned with SAS and it never picked them up again. I thought all problems solved, but both IE and FireFox keep having the redirection problems with various websites.

Thanks in Advance!

Hi, I have turned up all the volumes for my microphone and selected the microphone boost. It has been working fine for a long time but recently the sound for recording of the microphone has become quite low. Now when I talk through my mic, none to very little amount of sound comes through recording (for example Skype no one can hear me) but it all comes through my speakers. (As I talk into the microphone, I can hear myself through the desktop speakers) Any ideas on how to fix this issue?

Thanks.

I have a GWA-4083B which exhibits the following behaviours :

1. Shows up on Explorer as "DVD-RW Drive (F: )"
2. When a disk (CD or DVD) is injected the light flashes a few times.
3. Explorer does not see the disk at all - clicking on the drive leaves the system asking for a disk to be inserted. The disks work in other PCs or DVD players, and it makes no difference if they are self-burnt or commercial releases.
4. The drive can be ejected using software controls - I'm assuming this means that the system recognises the existence of the drive, just not that a disk is being mounted.
5. Device manager shows no problems, and an up-to-date driver
I cannot upgrade the firmware as it doesn't see the drive the firmware is mounted on to be flashed.

I have opened the case and the drive, and ensured it isn't a dust issue (the DVDRom was quite clean.)

The problem occurred when I was trying to watch the Eragon DVD. It started playing in WinDVD, ran for a while then froze out completely. I had to do a hard reset of the PC to bring it back, and that's when the problem manifested itself.

A scan with AVG shows no virii. Spybot shows no spyware, and both are up to date.

Can anyone suggest ANYTHING to get this thing back ? A Hijackthis log is added below, in case that helps.

Thanks in advance ! - Michco

I really need some help here

When I start my computer with any hardware plugged into my usb ports, they work fine, but if I plug anything in after I start or unplug and replug anything in, it no longer recognizes them. My hardware (a tablet, mouse, and a external HD) light up as if they are plugged in but my computer doesn't recognize them.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the software for my things, but it doesn't make a difference.

I tried to uninstall the usb ports to reinstall them through windows, but the device manager freezes whenever I try to uninstall anything or refresh it. (I dunno if this could be related to the problem?) I also cannot use the safely remove hardware option. It completely freezes and I have to shut it down with the task manager.

Can anyone help me? This is driving me crazy >_<;

I am working on a Dell Precision 380 computer and the USB ports are not working correctly. I checked the Device manager and it stated that everything was working properly. I tried uninstalling the root controllers and hubs, letting them reinstall on restart. When I restarted, leaving a Flash drive in one of the ports, it recognised the flash drive. After I removed it and replaced it, the PC no longer recognized the drive. I am at a loss for a solution and any help would be appreciated. Thanks. System specs below....

Dell Precision 380

Windows XP Pro SP3
Pentium 4 3.20 GHz
3.5 GB RAM

A:USB Ports not working correctly...

Remove the flash drive...go to Device Manager and uninstall all controllers only (leave hubs alone)...reboot.

FWIW: You might pay attention to the Safely Remove Hardware functions in the future. I don't use flash drives or external drives in my USB ports, but it seems that some users have problems when they fail to heed the Safely Remove Hardware function.

(I changed a few answers for security reasons)

The answer file is supposed to give all setup info except computer name, we want to enter this by hand.
When I run sysprep the installation keeps promting for the product key that is already in the answer file.

I have tried removing the quotes, the dashes and spaces, with no success.

Can anyone help me here?

I honestly cannot figure out what I am doing wrong.

Woke up yesterday morning to find I could not sign on to the internet.
Went to check email on MSN and it keeps telling me msn has stopped working.
I also had to re check the box in connection settings for LAN and DSL or it would go to dial up. Went to Firefox and it said Firefox is already running, but is not responding. To open a new window, you must first close the existing Firefox process, or restart your system.
So I restarted my computer. First thing that comes up is: Catalyst Control Center: Host application has stopped working. Msn and Firefox still were doing the same as above. Also quicken and quick books won't open. I downloaded and reinstalled Catatlyst, It opened after I did that but after I restarted my computer it stopped working again. I can get on the internet by using explorer but when I open it. It says A program on your computer has corrupted your default search provider settings for Internet Explorer. Also my weather channel app won't but displays a temp that is not even close to my area.

I ran a full virus scan and nothing.

I did set up another user account on my computer and everything works on it.

Thanks for any help. Kevin
