Can't get Win 2K to accept partitions

Q: Can't get Win 2K to accept partitions

Ok, I've got a dual P3 700 at work that we really can't use in it's current state at work. It's a fiery tower that was meant to be a print server from EFI . They won't even support the hardware on their website. It's got a Tyan Thunderbolt mainboard in it. They used their proprietary BIOS when they built it so you couldn't change the OS. After finally figuring out what mainboard was in there I went to Tyan's website and downloaded their version of the BIOS and flashed it. Now when I try to install 2K, I can partition the drive with no problems but it keeps telling me that I need to choose a windows 2000 compatible partition to install it on. It doesn't give me the option to format the partition in the setup. I am able to go into the recovery console and use the format command to format the partition, but it keeps giving me the same error in the setup. The hard drive is a SCSI IBM running from the onboard SCSI ultra 2. I checked all the BIOS & SCSI BIOS settings and they seem to be correct. I tried downloading the latest SCSI drivers and loading them before the install, but that doesn't make a difference either. I've also tried different partition sizes with no luck. What I don't get is why can I partition the drive and format it (in recovery console), but can't install on it? Can anyone give me any ideas on what to do? Thanks

Preferred Solution: Can't get Win 2K to accept partitions

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Have you tried formatting with Partition Magic? I use version 8 to partition all custom systems that I build and I love it, it works grate! I have never had a problem using PM8.

Hello, I was redirected to start a new thread in this section of the forum.

Basically, I have 2 hard drives. One SSD for the primary and one 2TB drive for the secondary.

My secondary drive was partitioned into 4 parts.

In the last month the secondary had been disappearing.
I could see it in safe mode. And when I scanned for hardware via rapid storage technology, it would pop up in Windows Explorer during normal mode.

The only problem besides disappearing after shutting down/restarting was that it would freeze the computer if kept on.
Today I tried to do the old Rapid Storage trick. Everything was visible again, except one drive. It was saying access is denied when i tried to open it in windows explorer.

I tried swapping SATA cables for the current one. I also tried connecting it to other ports.

I read somewhere that flashing the BIOS would solve the problem. I flashed my BIOS with Gigabyte's @BIOS with the latest BIOS. The latest BIOS was for "Better SATA compatibility."
It didn't do much, all it did was cause Rapid Storage Technology to see less ports which I believe were the would be partitions on the secondary drive.
So I disconnected the secondary drive and tried connecting it to the PC with a SATA to USB adapter.
It saw the HDD, except 3/4 partitions were empty. And even in the 1 partition the folders housing the bigger files that took up most of the drive is empty.
Sorry for typing up so much, I just wanted to get everything out there.

Hello,
One of my friends has a windows 7 computer with an account for himself, his mother and his 2 sisters.
All the home directorys are stored in drive C.
Partition D is shared.
The question is, how to get a partition layout like this?
Partition 1: OS + programs
Partition 2: home partition for himself
Partition 3: home partition for his mother
Partition 4: home partition for his sister
Partition 5: home partition for his other sister
Partition 6: shared partition for some photos.
Has someone an idea how to do this?
Kind Regards,
x11.

A:How to create home partitions and partitions for the OS with programs?

This would be a long drawn out affair and there really is no need for it. All users have their own User Space on the C drive in the User folder.

Whether the Users folders and files are stored in the User folder or on some other partition doesn't really matter. As long as all the Users have Admin accounts all files will be accessible to all of them.

The real question is Why do you want to do it? If there is only one physical hard drive in the system all folders and files would still be on that one physical drive even if you have 100 partitions.

As to having a Shared space for photos just make a folder called Shared Photos in the ROOT of the C drive. All users will be able to access it.

I recently changed ISPs and added a Netgear wireless router to the modem. I configured the modem and router useing my PC laptop, and generated a WEP Key with 64-bit encryption. I was able to successfully connect with my WEP Key on my PC and on my TiVo, but my Mac (which is a new MacBook) will not accept my WEP Key, saying there is an error in joining the network.

The dropdown menu in the AirPort window has four choices: (1) WEP Password, (2) WEP 40/128-bit hex, (3) WEP 40/128-bit ASCII and (4) LEAP. I'm assuming that since my WEP key is set to 64-bit encryption, that I should use the first option, which is what I have been trying.

I was able to connect my MacBook to my old wirelss signal, which I have not disconnected it (it's cable-based and runs from a different modem/router; my new ISP is DSL-based), and that signal also has a WEP Key with 64-bit encryption.

I also tried disabling the WEP key encryption for a time, and then I was able to secure a connection to the new signal, but I want to maintain the encryption. Please help.

More than likely your motherboard will accept it, but it will only run at PC100 speed. And I doubt you will have any problems, just you will not be running the ram at it maximum capacity. If you could give us some more info, like what kind of mobo, ram, etc. you have it would be good.

I looked on the CD, in the i386 folder/unattend.txt, bottom line is the product ID. When I put in this key, it tells me it's not a valid key. Now I'm stuck. Hello,

This is about not being able to accept cookies, I E version 6.

I have changed and re-changed setting in internet options. I put the bar at accept all cookies. I have shut down my firewall and this did not help. I am using Zonealarm.
I have seen this addressed on several news groups and no one seems to have an answer. I have searched the knowledge base and tried several suggestions, no help.

Starting out, I E 6 was working okay, and then it quit accepting cookies. I asked for some knowledge from this forum. It was suggested that I use I E version 5.5.

I have Win98, Pentium II, 233 mhz, 196 megs ram, 32 g hd, plenty of room.

I used a program call IEradicator to remove I E 6. (http:\\www.98lite.net)
This did seem to remove I E from my computer. I ran it twice. I scandisk and defraged, ran regclean, scandisk and defrag again. I installed I E version 5.5. I still can not get this computer to accept cookies. I discovered that the internet options drop down was the same as version 6. This options menu still has a privacy tab included. I donít think that this is part of version 5.5.

I still canít accept cookies.

Does anyone know what to work over, to help me correct this main problem?

I know that I can empty all data and reformat. Might be what has to be. Did not want to do this.

A:Cookies, can not accept

Here are two possible ways that may help .

Double check your settings ( close & reopen ) to make sure everthing has been done correctly & the changes have stuck .

Dear Fred: Let me tell you of a simple way I have come up with
for managing cookies. It may not work for everyone, but it
works for me.
In the Internet Options (Security tab), I set both the
Internet zone and the Trusted Sites zone to Medium security.
Then, in the Internet zone, I disallow cookies that are stored
on the computer, while allowing session cookies. In the
Trusted Sites zone, I allow both. Whenever I run into a site
which needs to store a cookie (like eBay, Amazon, cable TV
listings, etc.) I add that site to the Trusted Sites zone. At
the end of the day, I have on the drive those cookies which I
need to keep, and all others are history.
To make this even easier, I use a small application called
Trust Setter, which puts two buttons in the IE toolbar, Add to
Trusted Sites, and Add to Restricted Sites. Get it from
http://www.jasons-toolbox.com/ScriptRepository/ .
Available by right clicking on the unwanted page .

What is wrong? Why do Win7 give BSoD?

Win XP was OK with 2 x 2 GB - Why is Win7 not?

RAM: 2 x 2 GB GEIL, PC2-6400, DDR2-800
Mainboard: MSI P45 Zilent/Platinum with the newest BIOS.

Please help me :-)

A:Windows7 only accept 2 GB RAM

Hi,

Welcome to 7 forums

In this regard, i guess the problem is with the 2 GB RAM or the RAM slot. The issue is not with Windows 7.

► Lets say RAM 1 works, RAM 2 caused the issue.

* To find if the defect is with that RAM or the slot, remove the working RAM 1 and place the RAM 2 in that same slot.

* If your Windows works fine, then the problem may be with the other RAM slot. If the RAM 2 causes BSOD now, then the issue is with the RAM. You may have to replace that RAM 2.

* Additionally, you can try interchanging the RAM slots and boot up !.

Hope this helps

Hi everybody,

it's my first post here and I have a serious problem.

My old laptops motherboard burned, so I stripped the RAM and HDD an threw the rest away. I bought a used Toshiba Satellite Pro without the HDD.

I put the old one into new laptop. But I had set HDD pw on my old laptop. I remember it 100% correct but the new computer does not unlock the drive. It says: HDD Password Invalidate Press any key to continue.

I tried going through Bios but it says "Registered". AndI cant select the Drive, going up/down on the list they just skip this drive.

I also tried booting straight from windows Disc to format and reinstall Windows but it askes HDD password before even booting up the disc.
Any Ideas how I can get rid of password or get the computer to accept it?
eidt: I dont necessarily need the data from the disc. I do lose some valuable pictures but I am happy if I can just format and install new wimdows.

Hello guys,I know that this question may has been asked many times but here we go again.I always had wanted to try the old thinkpad experience so I got one very cheap but in a rough condition. (Nvida Version)Funny fact they forgot to remove a protective foil from the thermal pad  so the chip was not cooled at all.Model type is : 7663 - B22 S/N xxxxxxxxManufactured : 08/04.It has a T7300. Bios version is from 2010.Will this survivor accept Penryn processors like T8300 ?Well, in my country  Penryn processors  are cheaper and easier to find. Thanks all!

Mod Edit: S/N removed for privacy protection

A:Will This T61 accept a penryn cpu ?

Yes, it should work with no issues. I'd also recommend you to install the "Middleton BIOS" to remove any thermal error warnings and to unlock the SATA-II speeds.

My Intel 975xbx (rev. 304) will accept three 1 GB sticks of Corasair XMS memory, but when I put a fourth stick in, I get the three beeps and it won't post. I have tried all four sticks in different combinations, so it isn't a particular module that is "bad". I followed the voltage settings recommended by Corsair and have tried altering them, but I can't get all four to work at the same time. They were all purchased together, by the way. I can't find anything on Intel's site or Corsair's sited about a known problem. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Bill

I am trying to update the UEFI/BIOS on a Lenovo G50-45 type 80E3 from version 2.04 (file a2cn38ee) to v2.13 (file a2cn45ww.)  All goes as normal up to the re-boot.  After the Lenovo logo finally appears (see below) I get the error message "InsydeH2O - Secure Flash   Error : Invalid firmware image!!!  Please press any key to reset system......"  Pressing any key re-boots, and again after a longer than normal delay, the Lenovo logo re-appears and it boots back to Windows.  The BIOS is not updated. I have the right file - the same downloaded file works perfectly in other identical machines; I have a backup machine of the same model.  The checksum matches that posted on the downloads support page.  When run, the downloaded a2cn45ww file self-extracts to the file c:\BIOS\A2CN45WW\A2CN45WW.exe.  When that (an archive file) is run, it self-extracts to the folder c:\users\[username]\AppData\Local\Temp\7zS4B28.tmp.  In that folder is the ROM image (WIN213.bin, ~10MB) and whose checksum matches that of the same file on a machine which did update. Of significance:  Warm boots on this machine may take anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes before the Lenovo logo screen appears.  In either a normal cold boot or one-key recovery the logo appears after a second or two.  Something is hanging in the POST, I don't know what.  If I wait long enough, it eventually does start. Why I want to update the B... I have just started to use a new machine I put together and I'm trying to take my old hard drive (a Maxtor Fireball 3 30 GB) and connect it to the new machine as a slave drive. The master hard drive in the new machine is a Western Digital WDC WD800BB. Now I know the IDE 2 slot on the motherboard is working because the system recognizes the CD-ROM drive. I have tried every jumper setting possible. I follow the WDC setting. The Maxtor is a 9 pin drive, so the WDC said to put two jumpers when running a dual set up. This did not work. I tried to set it how Maxtor wants it where if it's going to be a slave drive then there shouldn't be a jumper at all. I thought that it might be a system level issue , but I've tried every combination in the drive sequence to make it work and it just won't. Every time it says that the drive is not found. I know the drive works fine because I can put it back in the old machine and it boots right up. I'm not sure where to go with this. I've even set each drive to the manufacturers specifications and it still doesn't work. What's also strange is that the WDC has to be set on cable select to work even with out a cable select cable connected. This is all happening before the OS ever boots up. Any suggestions?

A:System won't accept harddrive

If this is a new machine, why use such outdated [and slow] drives? Even the WD is only a 2meg cache drive. Modern mb are really designed to use sata drives.

Next if you really really must use these drives, post your exact system specs AND how you have them connected; ie Asus xxx123 motherboard with drives connected to ide1, ide2, etc.

CARDFILE .AZZ program suddenly will not let me add or change any existing cards when I type. Every time I type something on an existing card, my computer key just "beeps" and will not print anything on the card!

Further, the "save" for the card is grayed out. Everything else on the computer works and all other programs work OK with thekeyboard. Can someone please explain what the problem is and how to correct it for CARDFILE .AZZ.

Thanks.

Running XP Home SP3.

Last week the PC began asking for an Administrative password shortly after I turned it on. I was just a black screen with a smallish black box outlined in white. I'd never even heard of such a thing so I asked a friend who know computers to take a look. He told me that the system wanted some sort of password that had been entered into the BIOS settings. I told him that we'd never set up anything like that, and asked if he could get around it.

He took a small battery out of the PC, and left it out for about 30 minutes. When he put it back, it no longer asked for that password, but when it booted to windows, it did not bring up my desktop. It went to a signon page with the name Guest. And only that name. It did not show my user name (which is Mike), or show my desktop. It also wanted a password for Guest.

Since I have no password on my system, I had no idea. We left it blank, but it brought up a message box reading

The specified domain either does not exist or could not be contacted
Please try again or consult your system administrator.

My friend booted into safe mode, where we got essentially the same result, except that this time the user was Administrator. No other users on the page. And once again it asked for a password.

He went home and got a disk called ERD and booted from that, and then went into some utility from the start menu that would allow him to reset the passwords. He reset both Guest and Administrator, and showed me that t... Read more

2 days ago I upgraded my laptop from Vista to Windows 8, I didn't have the router network password handy so I skipped that. I set up a new Microsoft account because I didn't have one and I was able to use the laptop for a while. After shutting down for the night I was unable to get back in (it wouldn't accept my password). I reset the password and verified that the new password worked by signing into my MS account on another computer. I connected the laptop to my router with a cable but it still would not accept my MS password. Many hours later, I did manage to get in and thought the problem was resolved.

Today: still connected by cable, laptop won't accept the MS password.

If I ever get back in I'll set it up so that I don't need to go through an MS account but I need to get in first.

Any suggestions?

Just posted this and tried again and suddenly I can get in - very confusing

A:Windows 8 won't accept my password

Check your keyboard setting. I had set Canadian keyboard, then when you type @, it becomes " (but I didn't know because screen show only dots), that's why Windows 8 didn't accept my password.

this issue happened when my wife plugged it in to her "dads mobile home" plug on wall.
let me explain, i have a 7yr old battery and have been using the charger to power up the unit, because my wife let the battery corrode so now i am forced to use the charger. now; the charger light is on(battery charger), but any light inside actual laptop, is off, even charging light wont turn on. so the unit wont accept power at all, i researched it and i came to draining the PSU(hold power button for a minute). that didnt work. this laptop comes apart comfortably, and its got all its stickers originally on the bottom, but i don't want to pay this much to fix it if its simple enough just testing the unit. also i bought a spare charger for the unit 1st and that didn't solve the problem either. No power to laptop at all? i looked at it, was clean, even tested the connectors on actual male/female plug that goes directly into unit, it holds currency. do i have to explore the motherboard and parts? or is this as simple as replacing a battery inside, like the one next to charger light[BIOS batt]? i am a very fast learner, and can travel to the stars, so depending on the fix, i am down to do this. i cannot waist my wife's $1200 laptop when purchased, bigg thanks!
