Dell latitude D610: black screen w/ underscore blikng in left top corner

Q: Dell latitude D610: black screen w/ underscore blikng in left top corner

So my laptop is an old one however I know it can be fixed. I closed the top when it was updating the computer. Will that cause it to not start up within hours. It comes on shows the Dell symbol then goes to a black screen with a bliking underscore in the top left corner. What should I do? Will I be able to savee any of my work on it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello, my computer will freeze every 2 hours or so and I have to restart it by holding down on the power button.

Then when I restart it I get a black screen with white underscore in the top left corner. Or sometimes a screen that says no boot device available.

I can still start the computer by going to boot menu and choosing HD at the start of setup. But if I don't press f8 then my comp will not boot up.

I don't have a clue whats wrong with it. I had to reinstall vista but still the same problems. Please help.

My computer is about a year old now, built by me and my dad. Recently it's been having some issues though-- for a while I think it was over heating, causing it to reboot. At least I hope it was just overheating. One time when I booted up my computer it told me overclocking failed, which was odd because I hadn't messed with any of the settings (all still defaults).

But heres the major issue: If you boot it up, after the BIOS it'll give you a black screen with a blinking underscore up in the left corner. If you're quick enough you can get it to go into safe mode, etc. You can also choose which drive to boot from--- I found that it only gives you the black screen with certain drives. But, I did notice that its very slow when you have the "loading" screen for windows-- it'll slowly fade in and start loading, then it goes to a normal speed.

A:Black Screen + White Underscore in Upper Left Corner

I could be a memory issue. Try removing RAM one stick at a time and seeing if any of them are causing it. Then try them individually in each slot. It could be the motherboard if only one slot is faulty.

Hi guys,

The other day I was using my old desktop and using firefox when suddenly firefox froze up while browsing and I was unable to ctrl+alt+del or click start or anything for that matter in order to close it down. I then turned off my computer manually by pressing the power button as I sometimes do when my computer freezes and turned it back on. Unfortunately, when I turned it back on the computer is stuck on the black screen with the blinking underscore in the top left hand corner.

I unfortunately am not good with computers and would like to avoid reformatting my computer, as this old desktop contains the largest amount of my media such as music and movies that I had been meaning to put onto an external hard drive. Furthermore, I do not have an XP installation disc and am unable to locate the system recovery discs that came with the PC (like I said, it's old, circa 2006, and they are most likely lost somewhere in the house or thrown out by now). Thank you for all the help and support in advance.

A:Windows XP black screen with blinking underscore in top left hand corner

if you haven't tried, as you switch on press the F8 key up and down repeatedly, if this works you will be at the safe mode menu - try last known good config. If still no go, try booting to BIOS - if this doesn't work I would say hard drive issue. Download the hard drive manufacturer's diagnostic program, this has to be burned to a disk. Then put the disk in and let it boot the pc and run the test.

The other day, I started having a problem with the screen on my latitude d610 laptop. After awhile of being on it would turn off. Not the laptop itself, just the screen (I know this because I can hear the audio coming from the task I was working on). This problem got progressively worse and now when I turn the screen on it only flickers on for about a fraction of a second before going back off.

I'm not entirely concerned with getting that fixed (although, if you know what the problem is, please do let me know). My main concern is the fact that I cannot get an external monitor to work. I have plugged in the VGA cable into my laptop and the external monitor and then I hold down the "fn" key and press the "CRT-LCD" button, but nothing happens. There is no problem with the VGA cable I'm using or the monitor I'm trying to use, because I tried troubleshooting with another laptop and was able to get it to work on that second laptop. The only thing I can think of is that maybe my d610 is not recognizing the VGA cable/external monitor, because after plugging the VGA into my d610 I do not get the "device is connected" chime that I would normally hear after connecting a device.

If you have any advice for me on what my problems could be or anything you think I might be able to do to try to correct the problem, I'd certainly appreciate it.

Hey guys I have a Song Vaio RBG-53 (I believe) with XP. I was using google images when I clicked on a picture and got a fake anti virus pop up. It wasn't the normal one I've seen quite a few times so I alt f4 closed it and immediately ran my AVG virus scan. That found nothing so I ran Malwarebytes which found 4 infected files. Two were in the registry and two were in my temporary internet files...I believe. Then I had it remove them and it said I needed to reboot to safely remove the files. I did that and when the computer started back up, it showed the initial Sony Vaio screen and then it goes straight into a black screen with a blinking cursor at the top left corner. The fan in my computer will run pretty loudly for about a minute and then slow back downto normal. At this point I'm not able to do anything. None of the F keys do anything. I tried ctrl alt del and that has no effect either. I can't get into safe mode or recovery console or anything like that. I've been researching google for the last hour on this and all the fixes involve just going into safe mode or using a repair cd, which I do not have. Does anyone have any other suggestions? Thanks.

I have seen this problem once before [posted in a different forum on this site] but it was a problem someone had on a laptop and it was for Windows XP.

I am using a desktop PC [Windows 7- HP] in a nutshell.

Anywho...The Problem.
I was minding my own business, listening to music and editing on a photoshop program, when suddenly my computer shut off on me. So, thinking that I might have accidentally pressed the power button with my leg, I restart it. Only to get a black screen with a little white flashing line at the top left corner of my screen.

I've heard people say to try to load it in Safe Mode. But I honestly don't know how to do that with Window's 7. I'm at a bit of a loss really. I've tried numerous things. I'm close to giving up...and so I'd really really REALLY appreciate any help given. I have a lot of files and etc...on this thing, and I really don't want to hear that there's nothing that can be done to retrieve them! :(

A:Help: Black screen with flashing line at top left corner

Press F8 at boot time to get the mneu and choose safe mode.

Try connecting it up to a different monitor and see if the results are the same.

Hi, I have an Acer laptop - Aspire 5315-2470 and when my son turned it on it goes to the Acer screen and then goes to black screen with cursor in the left hand corner.

I have tried to reboot in safemode but all I get is beeping noises. I also read in the manual on how to restore the computer back to day one we bought it, by holding ALT and F10 upon turning on . All I get is the same beeping noises.

This computer is only 1 year old , so if someone can give me any advice on how to fix this I would be very happy.

Thanks In Advance...

A:Vista with black screen and cursor in left corner

Look at your BIOS settings. The Acer screen may tell you how to access the BIOS (boot) settings with a function key - probably F2. Press that F2 or whatever it tells you when the Acer screen comes up. When the BIOS screen displays, make sure the "boot from" setting is your hard disk. If not, change it.

I don't know if this is the correct place to post this question. My daughter was using my MSI laptop and when she tried to start the computer all that came up was a black screen with the cursor in the upper left corner. She selected the restore option which came up because the other options would not do anything.

Is there any possible way to recover my files, pics, etc. or is it just gone now? I'm really upset because I had five years of photos of my grandchildren. =(

Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

It's not booting to your Hard Drive. You can set the boot order in your BIOS. It is either F1, F2. Delete, F5, sometimes F10. HP usually uses F10, try that first.

Then set your boot order as follows:

CD/DVD first, Hard Drive second, then it does not matter after that.

Also, in your BIOS you will be able to see if your Hard Drive is being detected, if not, try unplugging the power and Data cables and plugging them back in, HP's are notorious for dropping the Hard Drive, you have to buy new SATA cables constantly. You may need to do this.

When I turn on Lenovo thinkpad desktop it comes to the Gateway screen then to a black screen with the cursor at top left corner. F8 is not working - whether pressing intermittently or holding down so I can't get to safe mode. F2 was working ( set up menu ). But it has now quit working. When I turn on my computer all I get is a black screen with the flashing cursor up in the left corner of the screen. Any ideas as to how to correct this? I have a Dell from he'll computer-- inspiron E1505 about 8 years old and just had windows 7 home edition installed on it

A:Black screen with flashing cursor in upper left corner of screen

Hey I just went through something very similar. I found that my SATA cable connecting the hard drive to the motherboard had failed. I replaced it with a new SATA cable, and it booted right up. Try the cable first if you have one lying around, plus its a cheap solution. If you replace the cable and it still won't boot up, it might be your hard drive. Seeing as how your machine is that old, it could fail at any time.

Do you get anything on the screen when you turn it on?

First backup any files you want off of the computer with an Ubuntu Live CD saving to an external USB HDD/Flash Drive.
If you have a Windows 7 DVD or Restore CD put that in the computer and choose your language and then Restore Your Computer.
If you do not have a disc, then you probably have a restore partition. Restart the computer on the logo screen when you see the message Press (Key) to Enter E-Recovery do so, this will restore your computer to Factory Defaults. Be sure to backup first.

Hello , my computer won't start up to windows . I do not have the cd to restore my computer . I have a compaq windows xp computer . I believe it has to do something with a program called norton ghost that I was running , it froze so I restarted the computer and I chose to start windows normally . The blank screen then came up with the blinking cursor on the top left corner . Is there any possible way I can fix this problem myself ?

A:Blank black screen with blinking cursor at top left corner

Norton Ghost is a Clone/Imaging software to clone your existing HDD to a different HDD. What exactly were you trying to do?

Boot off of the Windows Disc Or download the Recovery Console ISO. Burn it to CD with IMGBurn Boot off of the CD and get to the Recovery Console. Here type chkdsk /R and press enter. Disk Check Outside Windows (Windows XP) The Check Disk utility will try and fix any file errors.
You can also download the ISO image for Seatools, or DriveFitness in my signature and burn the image to a CD using IMGBurn also in my signature and boot off of the newly created CD and run the Quick and Advanced tests on the HDD to test the integrity of the drive.

Check your connections, check your disk - e.g. using a live boot disk or connect it to another PC.

I have a dell inspiron 580 Intel ? core ? i5 CPU 650 3.20 GHz with windows 7 according to the sticker on the computer. I am not computer savvy at all so lay people terms would be greatly appreciated. I have been using google documents to study from and add stuff to for my national exam. Google docs kept freezing on me so I used task manager and ended some tasks hoping that would help it from freezing?it has been freezing for months on any browser I use and it really cuts into my study time so I thought ending tasks may help. After that, I got frustrated with the computer and instead of powering it down, I just turned it off via the power strip switch. The next day when I tried to start it, all I get is a black screen with an underscore. I cannot type in any commands nor do I have any option to start it in safe mode. I only have the options of F2 and F12 when I start the computer or press ctrl+alt+delete. I tried messing around with setting under f2 and f12 but nothing worked. I tried to load default setting from one of those menus but that didn?t work either. I tried pressing F5, F8, F12 at different times repeatedly upon computer startup to try to get an option for safe mode but that didn?t work. Please help me, I really need to get it fixed so I can continue studying. Thanks!

A:Holding X240 by bottom left hand corner causes screen to black out and flicker

Hi, I had this problem several times as well. First time it happened was I picked up my x240 (with lid open) from the corner to the left of the trackpad, and the screen flickered and crashed. The x240 crashed the same way when I was using the x240 on my lap, while resting my left elbow to the left of the trackpad, supporting my chin reading the a document on the screen. I think the crash happens when there's pressure to the area to the left of the trackpad. It would be great if anyone else could replicate the same problem, and hopefully somone can find a fix!

If you have a current backup I would suggest booting with the OS disc and going to the recovery console. If you have XP, run chkdsk and see if that fixes it. If you have something newer there should be some options for recovery when you boot from the CD/DVD.

You may need to download newer drivers for your graphics card that is in your laptop. It sounds like right now your computer is using the default drivers from the Windows XP Disk which may not be good enough for your video to show up from a DVD. Did you try the Dell website for the video drivers?

Or you may need to download a DVD Playback Codec. They are normally not free, but there is a player out there that they come free in which is called VLC.

Okay, one of my laptops which is a Dell Latitude D610 suddenly just turned off. The charger was connected when that happened. I tried the power button but no lights turned on. I already tried taking out the battery and turning it on with charger/and without, but still nothing works. Is the battery completely dead, and need to be replaced? How can I fix this? thank you in advanced !

A:\Dell Latitude D610 won't turn on/

Possible reasons for this:

1.) Your battery is dead and can no longer be charged, AND your power supply unit is dead also

2.) Your battery is fine and your power supply is fine, but the DC jack for your laptop needs repair/replacement. It could be currently preventing power from getting to your computer, thus not charging your battery or powering the computer.

3.) Your power supply unit is dead and needs replacing.

4.) Your motherboard is dead.

It may help to take your computer to a shop and plug in a working adapter that fits your computer; that will help diagnose your issue...along with the info provided.

Hope that helps.

I have a Dell Latitude D610, have had it for five years. It originally had XP Pro installed, but early this month I installed Windows 7 Pro. Leo Notenboom inspired me on this, as he is highly regarded on computers, and he installed Windows 7 on it for his wife. You don't need a new PC or laptop to enjoy Windows 7, it works on older systems too, although you don't have all functions. That's why I'm posting, I would've bought another copy of Home Premium had I known this. I can't run Microsoft's Virtual PC (a free download that allows you to run XP mode). I bought Pro thinking that I could, but the hardware doesn't support it. The laptop is maxed out with all features (of the time), 2GB RAM, 100GB hard drive. Is there another program that will allow me to run XP Mode, or will I have to settle for a dual boot (meaning a reinstall of XP Pro followed by installing my disc image & backup of Win 7 Pro?)

Have above with ram 512 and 40 gb of memory.

I need 160 gb and will also upgarde the ram with cruical memory.

Should I look at changing the cpu, and if so what to.

A:Dell Latitude D610 - upgrade advice please

If I were in similar circumstances, I would buy an entirely different laptop with a 2.0 GHz or faster dual core processor and 2 gigs of RAM. Then the old laptop could be sold for $150 or so to off-set the costs.

Upgrading the CPU of a laptop is a pain. While installing an HDD with a higher storage capacity and better RAM are quite easy to do, you probably won't notice any increase in performance. Also, the resale value of the computer would not increase as much as the cost of the upgraded components.

Greetings, I am Anthony. I will get right to it.
I have a Dell Latitude D610 Laptop/notebook. Originally I got it used and it had Windows XP, and did not come with any discs, drivers, etc...
However I wasn't a fan of XP, So I converted this computer to Vista.
This was a bad idea. Vista freezes, alot, while doing almost nothing. Registering to this site and creating this topic lags very bad.
When XP was on this computer, the computer ran very well for this low end hardware.
I have about 1GB ram, and the 1.8 cpu Pentium M category. When I had XP, I could play my favorite game and have background programs running/minimized. The game is Star Wars Battlefront 2(or Battlefront one) - These games are from the 2004-2005 and have very low hardware requirements.
Those games ran very good on XP.
On Vista, I can barely load the game. I begin either game, and it takes well over 2 minutes to load up - and reach the start screen. It takes another eternity to load any levels.
The games load SO slow that joining internet servers times me out.
The game and web browsing slowness is just examples of how Vista is currently sucking.
Here is where the problem pops in...
I cannot find a way to re-install XP. I have an XP disc, but it is not made for this computer.
-Booting from this disc results in "Line 1 of the file..... blah blah blah is invalid"

I just got a Dell Latitude D610.
Everything works just fine but I have one annoying problem: There is sort of a high pitched wahhhh noise (Sorry, can't think of a more intelligent term) that goes on and off. It's usually on, but from time to time I get a few minutes of silence.
I suspect the sound card since the noise moves to headphones when I plug them in (The speakers stop making the noise and only the headphones are making them and yes, I'm sure it's not the computer itself since I can't hear it when I take off the headphones while they're plugged in ;-)

I was wondering if anybody had ever heard of something like this. I looked around the net and the forums and haven't found anybody having a problem like this.
Thank you very much,

I have a Dell Latitude D610 and my problem is that the wifi light won't come on. I've done the Fn+F2 thing and all that is enabled is bluetooth. I've gone to dell's site and updated drivers and done basically everything I've seen others do on forums. What's interesting is that once in awhile, my wifi light comes on and my wifi will work for maybe 30 seconds and then it disappears. When i go to device manager, my broadcom 802.11g adapter sometimes shows up but usually it isn't there. So it's not there with a yellow exclamation mark over it; when it is on there it's fine but it's hardly there ever. I've even removed the wireless card and reconnected it to see if it'd work but no luck. Basically I've tried just about everything and I'd welcome someone who has more experience with this kind of thing to help me out.

that would have been my first suggestion - sounds like the adapter is intermittently faulty

What firewall / security suite or anti-virus do you currently have on the PC - or you have ever had on the PC in the past - any trial ware - like Norton, Mcafee , AVG , Webroot etc

i have seen these cause this type of issue before

also try safemode with networking - wireless often does not work in this mode anyway - but just in case
safemode with networking
as the PC starts keep tapping F8 - a menu appears - choose
safemode with networking - see if that works

I've had no problems with seeing wireless networks on my laptop before, but this morning I turned it on and it couldn't see any networks. My other machines in my house are connecting successfuly wirelessly so I know it's not the router. I tried disabling and re-enabling the laptop's wireless connection, but to no avail.
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks!

I looked through almost all the thread related to this issue and couldn't fix it.
I got the laptop through work and we don't have an IT person so I have to figure this out myself.

I can't turn on the Wifi switch (Fn + F2) and then I realized its possible it doesn't have a driver so I downloaded the Broadcom 570x Gigabit Integrated Controller
so far and its still not working.

Here is the what is on my device manager.

I'm a novice and this is my first post here so I would appreciate any help I can get. I am unable to connect to the internet wirelessly any more. I can connect fine when my computer is connected to a cable and I can use the wireless signal fine with another computer. It used to work perfectly but stopped one day. Currently I'm using a Dell Latititude D610 with Windows XP using the factory installed wireless card.
I've tried removing the wireless card and replacing it.
Also I've read that using the function and F2 key will get wireless utility to open but nothing happens when I do that.
When I open device manager under network adapters all it shows is Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller. I think this device is for my cable modem and not my wireless card but not 100% sure.
Any suggestions?
Thanks for all your help!

I am working on a Dell Latitude D610. The owner is complaining of power supply issues. When the AC adapter is plugged in, it shorts out. The green light on the adapter is illuminated when it is plugged in to the wall only, but goes out when connecting it to the laptop.

I have two power supplies from the owner, both behave the same way. I also have another Latitude Laptop which would use the same power supply and have the same issue.

Where do I go with this? What's the next step?

TIA. -Paul.

Can anyone help with this mystery? (Please if you can speak in simple terms as I am not very computer savvy).

I have an Dell Latitude d610 running WIndows XP with all USB ports not working. I have tried uninstalling the drivers and rebooting so that the correct drivers are reinstalled as recommended from the troubleshooting options but the problem persists. All driver updates show that the drivers installed are up to date. In the Device manager an exclamation point is shown beside all USB ports. The message for the device status coming up when I right click on the exclamation point is - Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing (code 39)

Ok, I've been looking around online for a solution to my Dell Latitude D610 failing to power on, but none have worked, and I think there are a couple details that are different from other people's problems. I'll be as detailed as possible here to give a good description of what's going on...When I press the power button, the power light comes on for a couple seconds and then goes out again, and there are no noises whatsoever coming from the computer. I've tried all the combinations of unplugging the power adapter, removing the battery, holding down various F keys, applying pressure to the buttons, etc etc...The thing that seems to be different with my problem is that immediately before this problem, my computer had inexplicably shut down. A few months ago I had a problem with the computer getting very hot and completely shutting itself down (I assume from overheating), but it stopped doing that for a while. Back when I had that problem, however, I was always able to restart the computer without any trouble. Now the same thing seems to have happened, except now it won't do anything at all. Since this all started with the computer shutting itself down, rather than simply refusing to start after sitting turned off, it makes me think it's not an issue of a loose connection or a faulty power supply...any ideas? could overheating have caused permanent damage?

A:Dell Latitude D610 failure to boot

the D610 ....

oveheating is never good..however that is what the thermal trip is for.

i would try reseating the memory first as loose memory can cause the laptop not to power on.

if not

first off, go here for the manual, your going to need some screwdrivers and some time.

Open the laptop up and check the CPU fan and cooler unit for blockages, its a good idea to get some heatsink paste and you will need to repaste the CPU if you remove the heatsink.

With the mobo out (its quite easy to get them out) inspect for any burn marks on the board around the components.

if you find any, then a new mobo will be needed as its probably failed, however if not reassemble the laptop and make sure all the connecting leads are seated securely.

if you have a test meter check your voltage on the power adaptor, i think its about 19volts normally on those models, but it will state on the back of the unit.
