Thinkpad Yoga - Backspace, Windows, Shift, T, Y, Tab, [, ], Capslock keys not working

Q: Thinkpad Yoga - Backspace, Windows, Shift, T, Y, Tab, [, ], Capslock keys not working

I've had my TPY for a little over a year without any issues, but today I lost the ability to use the following keys: Backspace, Windows, Left-Shift, T, Y, Tab, Capslock, [, ] in addition to some of the function keys. Using the onscreen keybaord or an external usb keyboard works just fine. I am unable to use the tab key at the BIOS screen, so it appears to be a hardware issue. This seems to be a common problem for these keys in particular for various Lenovo models and even some Dells. I have tried reinstalling the keyboard drivers as suggested in other posts, and I have tried reseating the keyboard connection according to this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PxHKvpI8Wvc I bought this unit from the MS store with only a 1 year warranty (which is now up), so I'm not sure what to do. I can try replacing the keyboard but it appears others have had only limited success with replacement. Has anyone else dealt with this problem?

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Update for anyone else who runs into the same problem: I ordered a replacement keyboard off of eBay and used the online hardware replacement manuals to take apart my TPY and switch out the keyboard. Everything is working like normal again!

On my Thinkpad Yoga S1, the keys t, y, backspace, enter, caplock, and left shift are suddenly not working. This seems to be a common problem on lenovo computers, but the lenovo forum administrator closed the only thread that attempted to address this without any solution. The lenovo admin said that too many diferent models were involved. I don't understand why these exact specific keys are affected on so many Lenovo models. Lenovo has no solution, and will not support a thread to work towards one. The Microsoft store already replaced my keyboard under warrenty over a year ago, but the YTP S1 is now out of warrenty. This does not seem to be a hardware problem given the relatively recent Keyboard replacement. Does anyone have any suggestions? I wont buy another Lenovo if this problem cant be solved. I've had tremndous problems with this computer and have found Lenovo to be unhelpful/unresponsive. This was an expensive computer when it was purchased.

For last few days, the certain keys like T,Y, Shift, Backspace etc..started mulfunctioning. It will work sometimes but it won't work sometimes. This issue persists for few days, but on a day, when i was typing important documentation , my backspace key started mulfunctioning again and tried multiple times by pressing it as it is urgent work to be completed on time. The same key got popped out after multiple tries. My laptop is under warranty until 2019. So i took my laptop for service in an authorized service centre. They said the keypad keys malfunctioing due to the some issue in chip but the same can't replaced under warranty as one of my key was popped out. They said that even if we fix the backspace key which is popped out , other keys wont work as the issue is with keypad chip. My question is why i need to pay for the keypad change as the keypad issue is not only with the popped out key. Actually the key is popped out after the keypad was already got defect. Please help me how to claim a warranty for this case

You can change the volume in software, but neither the volume +- on the keyboard, nor the volume rocker on the side of the machine will change the volume. That is, UNLESS you open the task manager, and then click on the services tab. As long as the focus is on the services tab, then the volume on the keyboard and the rocker will both work. If you click on another window, or if you click on a tab other than the services tab, both sets of buttons stop working. Also, both sets of buttons work fine in Linux.

Hello all, I have a Thinkpad Yoga 14 (20FY0002US), which was purchased 14 months ago, so it is just out of warrenty. It worked great, although I only use it when I travel. Starting from a few days ago, some of keys of it are not working. These keys are near the edges of the keyboard, such as "1", "q", "a", "z", the ESC key, the windows key, the space key, and the backspace key. The keys in the middle as wel as the function keys are fine.   I believe that It is not an issue related to the windows, but the problem exists even in the BIOS. I tried to update the BIOS and the drivers, but no help. I also have disconnected and reconnected the ribbon cables of the keyboard, no help as well. Any help/suggestions? Thanks a lot.

My old keyboard was refusing to re-initialize after the peripheral reset during win 7 boot. It's about a decade old, so I just assumed it was dead. I replaced it with my wireless keyboard I use for working on computers, Ms laser 8000. My keyboard now initializes fine, but shift L and Shift E are non functional. Sticky keys is off, along with all the other accessibility features. The keys work fine without shift pressed, and shift works with very other key.

I'm out of ideas, anyone have some?

hello, i'm not at all confident with laptops as such, and a few keys on my laptop have stopped working and i'm havin to use an onscreen keyboard in conjunction with my actual keyboard. from some searces it would appear this is a common problem with my laptop. my laptop is two years old, i haven't spilled anyting on it or damaged it in any way that i can think of. i dont have the time or money to have it sent away, as i'm studying out of the country and can't have it sent home etc.  i was just wanting to make sure that if i bought a usb keyboard this would still most likely work with this kind of problem?

Hi, An external usb keyboard should work fine. Regarding your notebooks keyboard, it may be worth trying the following. Shut down the notebook, unplug the AC Adapter and then remove the battery.  Hold  down the Power button for 30 seconds.  Re-insert the battery and plug in the AC Adapter. Tap away at the esc key as you start the notebook to launch the Start-up Menu and then select f10 to enter the bios menu.  Press f5 to load the defaults ( this is sometimes f9, but the menu at the bottom will show the correct key ), use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter.  Press f10 to save the setting and again use the arrow keys to select 'Yes' and hit enter. Regards, DP-K

Hi all, I've noticed over the last couple days, I am having issues with my mouse-pad pointer as well as my backspace button on my ThinkPad Yoga S1. It seems that randomly, especially (maybe even only) when I'm on battery power, my mouse-pad pointer freezes and stops working. Hitting Esc will release it and make it work fine for a few seconds until it freezes up again. I've also noted that my backspace button malfunctions at the same time that this happens - either it just wont work when I hit it, or it'll just be "stuck" on. It appears as if this only happens when I'm on battery power, so I'm wondering if it has something to do with power/battery settings. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers for my house and keyboard to no avail. I tried a System Restore to 3 or so days ago when I don't think I had this problem. I also tried looking in device manager to see if there is a power management tab for my mouse and keyboard devices, but didn't see one there. If anyone has ANY idea whatsoever as to what might be causing this and how I can fix it, I would REALLY appreciate any help. Thanks!!

Hello,

My G, H, apostrophe and backspace keys suddenly stopped working on my keyboard. I do not think this is a physical issue, because it happened suddenly with just these keys, and I have seen upon Google searching that others have had a problem with the exact same combination of keys suddenly not working. Is there a way to fix this without having to reinstall system and lose my Microsoft Office and other installed programs? (I have an HP notebook with Windows 10, by the way).

I have tried ejecting battery and unplugging cable and holding down Start button, but it didn't work. The onscreen keyboard works, but it's a pain to have to use. I know I could buy an external keyboard, but I'd prefer to fix this problem if I can.

Thanks in advance.

It's a huge problem as I have a manuscript to turn in very soon and I can't really write without using the shift keys.as for now I've tried the following;-reset my laptop to the factory settings, that included erasing all my files with the exception of a small partition where I kept my manuscript and only that-update the keyboard driver/uninstall it and then restarting the laptop-checked my region and language settings, it's all set to the US, although I do not live in the US...wondering if that might be the problem, but it's almost impossible.-remapped my shift keys using keymapper or smartkey, something like that. The weird thing is that those changes persisted even though I reseted my laptop, but even so, I solved nothingI want to add that I can't get a 3rd party keyboard these days, but the fact that even remapped, those keys didn't work could mean that the problem is software-based. Hi. I browsed some other threads concerning this problem, but none of those solutions has worked for me. The problem affects only the letters z,x,c,v, and the numbers 1,2,3,4,7,8,9,0. I can't make an uppercase version of those characters. When i launched the on-screen keyboard, I see the shift keys lighting up when I touch them, so it isn't a matter of physical damage to the keys... I went into the device manager and uninstalled all the keyboard drivers there - at least I think I did... and they just came back with the same problem... And i plugged in a Logitech keyboard and its drivers worked just fine. So short of wiping the entire drive with a fresh install of Win7, what can i do? I had to use the onscreen keyboard just to type the question mark. Thank
