Turn off Windows Auto Update

Q: Turn off Windows Auto Update

I use a vitualization type software called Toolwiz Time Freeze that on a restart removes all your downloads etc of the session.
It gets abit annoying when a Windows auto update starts downloading/installing when you know that TTF will be removing the update on the restart (that is also needed to install Windows updates).

Any advice on how i can get windows to tell me what important updates i need, WHILST having the option of when i can download and install them?

Many thanks for any help.

Preferred Solution: Turn off Windows Auto Update

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Turn off Windows Auto Update

See this tutorial by Brink:
Windows Update Settings - Change

I have mine set to "Check for updates...", and that works for me.
I get notified, but it's up to me, if and when to download and install them.

Is your computer a member of a domain? Was it once a member of a domain (and then you upgraded it?)

It sounds like your policy settings are being overriden.

Hello, recently my computer showed a windows security alert in the right hand side of the task bar. It said that windows automatic update was turned off. I clicked onto the windows security center and it would not let me turn auto update on. A message will sometimes pop up that says something like: "Windows is unable to turn on automatic updates please go the the control panal, click on system and turn them on from there." This message does not appear every time. When I click control panel>Performance/Maintenance>system>auto update, I apply the change and hit OK but nothing happens after that. Automatic update remains off after trying what was suggested.

I have also been getting the same pop up about once every 5-10 minutes (sometimes more) that says "unable to connect to server" with the url:

Hello, I've gone through the Preparation guide and I believe I've followed all the rules, here's my problem:Running XP Home, Windows Firewall enabled1) Been getting lots of SystemErrorFixer pop ups and to a lesser extent AntiSpywareMaster pop ups. 2) I also notice that when clicking on folders in an external hard drive, just by opening them, Windows Explorer will crash and display the error msg about how it had to close. These folders haven't had anything new installed in them and just contain old video files. 3) Can't turn on Windows Automatic Update, tried going through usual routes such as services.msc and starting it, enabling hardwire profile, etc. as recommended in Microsoft support sites and others. A:Running Admin but still unable to get auto update to turn on

Your first screenshot shows that you are attempting to open a file with an extension of crdownload

That file extension is usually associated with Google's Chrome browser. It is a temporary file extension given to a file during the download. Once the download completes, there are a few more things that might occur before the original file extension is assigned to the file.

One of those things is:
Security related Chrome extensions (apps) might need to complete their checking of the file.

Another thing is:
Antivirus apps (in this case, Kaspersky) might might need to scan the file.
I downloaded Kaspersky from here:
Download Kaspersky Anti-Virus - FileHippo.com
During install, it downloaded another 168MB of stuff.
After the install, it downloaded lots more files. Wow!

I downloaded Chrome 31.0.1650.63 from here:
Download Google Chrome 31.0.1650.63 - FileHippo.com

After restarting the Virtual Machine that I'm playing in, I used Chrome to download the System Update Readiness Tool (SURT) from here: Download System Update Readiness Tool for Windows 7 for x64-based Systems (KB947821) [November 2013] from Official Microsoft Download Center

Using Process Monitor, I did not see Kaspersky do anything with the file during or after the download. Perhaps I just missed Kaspersky's actions.

My temp file correctly renamed from
Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.crdownload to
Windows6.1-KB947821-v31-x64.msu after the download completed.

About a month and a half ago, I noticed all my desktop icons were on the left side of the screen in alphabetical order. Turning Auto-arrange off or on does nothing. As soon as I refresh or restart my PC, the icons revert back to the auro-arrange display. We have four user on my PC and oddly enough only my account (which is the admin - not sure if that matters) has the problem. You know how when you have a Windows' window that is partially off screen and you move the mouse over that window towards the edge of the screen where the window goes off screen how Windows automatically moves the window back fully onto the screen? What's that feature called?

And, more importantly, how do I turn it off?

I'm not sure what you are wanting to turn off about that. As far as I know, it's not possible to disable the ability to Restore/Move an offscreen window back.

Hey mates,

This is a very "beginner"question. I'm somewhat familiar with windows (not as much as I thought or wanted to be) , but basically the problem is this. Windows shuts down on a regular basis in the middle of work, quitting every program, reboots, and isntalls updates. I am pretty sure this is related ot the "action center" and whatnot, but how do I control that so that it
asks if it wants to restart (in the past, it asked to postpone 10 min, 4 hours etc) now it doesnt' seem to be doing that.
where I set how frequently it does that.

A:Windows 7 Auto-update (controlling it)

This workaround will stop it happening: Disable Install Updates And Shutdown Option In Windows 7/Vista

Or you can reconfigure Windows Updates:

When 7 windows starts on my computer, it runs an auto update.  When it fails, it reverts.  The restarts Windows.  Performing this loop endlessly, Windows never reaches the login screen.  I have run the diagnostics that come with windows.
The extended memory test found no errors.  The startup test found no errors, but ended with the statement, "Unspecified changes to system config might have caused the problem."  Then it goes on to state Repair action: system files
integrity check and repair error code 0xa.  Time 7036ms, but seemed to run much longer than that.
Is there a bootable application that would allow a Windows tech to remote access my machine?
The other thing that I observed before Windows reached this stage is that Windows thinks that it is not genuine.  My daughter had purchased the Windows 7 upgrade from Vista when she was attending college.  Windows 7 has been running on the machine
for about 7 years and passed the genuine test several times during this time.  I have the installation disk and product keys.
Any help would be greatly appreciated as the computer is no longer usable.

Ok, I downloaded the ethernet drivers for my PC. But when I installed them, Windows 7 auto-updated the drivers to Microsoft ones. The drivers were made for Windows Vista, which may be the reason, but I don't think it is. It was for my graphics card. Note that the W7 ones weren't found on nVidia's website. I was stuck with 640 x 480 at 16-bit color.

I have just started to use Windows Defender on W8.1 and cannot see a way to get it to auto update without getting all the other Windows updates to auto update as well. I prefer to manage the general Windows updates myself and decide when (or if) to apply them. However, like other AV products, I would lIke it to update automatically.

Any thoughts on how to do this - it must be able to do it

A:Auto update Windows Defender

I thought it did by itself? First off, you can set windows updates to only install important updates, and uncheck the box that says give me recommended updates the same way I receive important updates. That way you do not have to install recommended updates. Important updates should be installed no matter what, they protect your computer, etc.

If you don't want to do that, then see if it auto-updates despite the windows update being off, on its own. Give it a few days. If it does, you got it! If not, there is a high high chance you cannot do anything to keep it updated, as it is a built in windows feature

I have Win XP 2002 SP2 installed on my Dell Inspiron laptop. I have enabled the automatic update feature to receive and install patches/updates from Microsoft.

When I get to the 'Install Updates' page, my computer always fails at installing the updates.

Any ideas as to why my computer won't receive/install the required critical updates?

Also...I utilize Microsoft Outlook (not Outlook Express). Outlook Express allowed one to 'switch identities.' I have found no such option in Outlook. My wife and I have separate e-mail accounts under the same ISP, and Outlook has to be shut down and restarted to change over to her account.

Am I missing something?

Thanks in advance.

As we all know, Windows interrupts a shutdown, usually at the end of a day, to start downloading an update. I want to be able to delay this to give me time to create a Restore Point, in case the update messes up my machine (it does happen). Before I had Windows 7 clean reinstalled I had this set up so I know it can be done. (There are help files about delaying the automatic restart after an update but that is not what I want.)

So how can I delay the actual update please?

A:How to delay Windows auto update

The best way surely is not to have it set to automatic update at all, but to set it so you choose when to download and install. You then have as much or as little control as you want, and whether you install the updates altogether or in batches the process will automatically involve creating a system restore point before the installation starts. To change the settings go to System Security in the Control Panel.

I've got a fresh install of windows XP pro SP2, that is currently downloading a 1.3GB update for a game.. however windows has downloaded some updates and keeps bringing up this dialogue box that gives me about 4 mins before the machine will automatically restart - thus cancelling my download (which is about a quater of the way through).

Is there a way I can just stop this from coming up like stopping a service or something? I just don't want to be sitting in front of the computer clicking "restart later" every 10 mins or so..

A:Windows update: Auto restart

Just click restart later as many times as you need.

I am using windows 7 Home premium 64 bit. It started using a lot of RAM around 3.5 GB and sometimes 3.85 GB out of 4 GB on enabling automatic updates, but when I disable updates the RAM usage drop downs to 1.3 GB. Why is that?

A:windows 7 using too much RAM on enabling auto update

Maybe try using your Resource Monitor and see if the upgrade is the culprit or something causing the
memory leak. You could also look into the Task Manager for extended usage.

Yesterday I received standard notification of update ready to install. After clicking the shield I chose install. All seemed to go well. The install was a security update for .net 2.0. After reboot, I got the same notification. I installed and rebooted again. Guess what... it continues to ask me to install this update.

I tried changing Windows update to notify only. When I do that and uncheck that particular update and select 'do not notify me' for that update, I still get notified that I need the update.
I even tried install .net 3.0. Still getting notified.

Can anyone help on this?

1.  Windows 10 upgrade completed and computer worked OK until it ran automatic updates.
2.  Now system tries auto repair at startup, cannot repair, then gives option to troubleshoot.
3.  System restore not an option.
4.  Go Back to previous build will not work.
5.  Reset of PC will not work.
Assume I will need to reinstall to factory default, but first need to copy user files.
1.  When going to command prompt, users, I only see public user so I don't see user documents to copy.
Right now main problem is to save user files and then reimage.
Does anyone have ideas of how best to copy user files so that I can move on with factory recovery.

Download Fatdog64. Burn the iso to disk by right clicking on a Windows 7 and later computer and selecting burn disk image. You can use Rufus with the iso to create a bootable USB flash drive. Backup any data on the flash drive first. Depending on your computer, attach the flash drive and tap the key to bring up the boot menu and select the flash drive or DVD drive.
At the Fatdog64 desktop you will see your hard drive partitions in the lower left labeled sda1..sda2..etc. Clicking once on the sdaX icon will open a File Manager. If you do not see your Windows files close out the window and select another sdaX partition. For Windows 10 the partition may be sda3.
Once you have selected the correct partition attach a USB flash or external drive to the computer. A USB icon will appear next your DVD drive if you have one. Click once on it to mount and open another File Manager Window. Drag and move both windows until they are side by side. You can resize the windows by left clicking and dragging a corner.
Highlight the files/folders you wish to copy by holding the Ctrl key + left clicking. You can also Left Click and Window around the files/folders. Once you have highlighted your files/folders drag them from the HDD Window to the USB external Window. A small dialog window will open. Select Copy and check the Quiet box.
Edit: you only need to click once to open any folder.

HELP. I have an Acer Aspire 5610. It was running fine until there was an automatic update performed overnight. Now, I can't even get to Windows. I keep getting to the screen with the options for Safe Mode, last config, etc. No matter which one I click on it will act like it is starting, the blue screen flashes, then it returns right back to the options screen. Of course I do not have the disks for my laptop. I put an emachine boot disk for Windows 98 in the drive and that enabled me to get to a C prompt butttt....I do not know what to do from there.
