Ideapad y500 display turning off unexpectedly

Q: Ideapad y500 display turning off unexpectedly

In a nutshell, I noticed that my laptop screen would randomly start turning off for no reason while the laptop was still running. The "fix" for this would be to open the laptop up farther. Eventually, only the most wide-open orientation would allow the screen to display, and even that has ceased to work consistently. So I have read other posts about display issues that are common, so I will try to be as specific as I can. THIS IS NOT: A software issue, as best I can tell. My screen does not show lines or strange patterns, it just goes black. And I don't mean the display goes blank, it actually turns off. No light. A screen issue, I don't think. The screen displays perfectly well for short periods, and then just cuts off. It seems to be effected by the position of the display (e.g. How open the laptop is). I have to open the laptop as far as it will go for best effect, and even then, the screen will simply shut off after several minutes. Sometimes I can find a "sweet spot", and get the display to function for an hour or more, so long as I don't jostle the laptop more forcefully than using keystrokes. A GPU issue. I have hooked up the laptop, during period of screen blackness, to an external display. Everything shows up fine, which I understand would not happen if the GPU was having problems. MY MAIN QUESTION FOR THOSE SMARTER AND MORE SKILLED THAN I:Is the issue likely a loose screen cable, or something similar? Something that would cause a lack of power for the screen? Could there be something related to the laptop hinge(s) that would cause the display to work only at the most extreme angle? Is this issue likely to be something I can fix at home, as I am no longer within my warranty period? Any help you can provide will be much appreciated, as this is the first laptop I have owned. Thanks for reading!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi, Did a fresh install of windows and drivers on my 720s after using it for a few weeks. Everything seems to be working except the OSD on the function keys Read through forums and other resources and they say it's connected to the energy management driver. I did install, and reinstalled that but it's just a driver and no software can be seen on the start up menu or list of apps.  Is there something else I need to install to have the OSD working for function keys? Appreciate anyone who can help.

Hello, my Lenovo y500 laptop has not been working properly after normal shutdown (with fast boot on win8.1 enabled). After plugging AC adapter, laptop turned on by itself (I didn't press power button) but nothing appears on the screen - I hear quite loud fan from inside. So the screen is black, it doesn't even show 'Lenovo' logo. What's more, I can't even turn the laptop off by hitting power button! I can only do that by unplugging AC... Did someone experience such things?

Hi,  I tried to power up laptop. It would not power up. just white blinking light. I tried most recommendations i found online, like unplug power adapter, batter, hit button 10 seconds, 15 seconds 30 seconds, remove ram nothgint works.  I removed back cover. unplugged i guess the power port. then blinking light went away, I thought maybe it's stuck in sleep mode. It was defintily dead. plugged back in power port. The blinking light came back. the fan spans. just computer does not boot up. What are the odds both batter and power adapter both dead.  thanks for your help,

I have a lenovo ideapad y500 with a 1366x768 screen, and I am looking to pop open the screen, and replace the panel with a 1920x1080 screen. Assuming that I purchase another 15.6 inch screen (size of the original screen), is this possible? A model of the y500 is sold with a 1080p display, and the graphics card in my model is more than capable of outputting such a resolution. I was just wondering if there is a chance that the connections between my laptop and new screen would not match as I do not know if there is some sort of standard port with screens. Thanks!

A:Screen upgrade lenovo ideapad y500

You would need to find out the exact model of the 1080p screen was that was sold with that model and order the same one or compatible replacement model. Laptop screens are not universally interchangeable and you can't just buy any screen and connect it.

Please help. Trying to upgrade it from the Store but it is stuck at installing, it seems halfway through. Left it overnight (8 hours) but still at the same place. Tried again, 3 times already but the same result. Then I tried downloading Window 8.1 ISO through official channels with success but when I try it that way it requires me to input my present Windows 8 product serial which originally came with the machine. But that didn't work because it is OEM.  Ultimately I am trying to upgrade to windows 10 but I need to upgrade to 8.1 first.

Hi guys, this is my first post in these forums. Now, I searched a lot for a solution to my problem, but now I'm creating this thread.I got a Lenovo Ideapad Y500, and it worked really well for like a month, then I started hearing this really loud whirring noise and some vibration coming from the left side of the laptop, near the heat vents. I shut my laptop off and when I turned it backon It was gone. But now the noise is back and whenever I reboot my laptop is goes away but then it comes back after a while. Also, whenever I run the dust removal thingy in the Lenovo energy management app, It gets really loud then it goes away.I don't really feel lots of air coming out from the vent on the leftside of the laptop. I think it might be a fan problem but my laptop stays around 45-65 Celsius mostly. I don't know how hot it runs when I play games, though. Any help on this unnatural whirring sound that starts after a while is really appreciated.

Okay so, I got my Lenovo Ideapad Y500 a couple days ago. Liked it and all BUT when I had my mouse connected into the laptop and then turned off the touchpad, it would not turn back on. The only way I could get my touchpad to work again is by restarting the computer, which is pretty frustrating. I searched this: http://support.lenovo.com/en_US/downloads/default.page?   for ANY drivers/software for the Y500 mousepad and there are none. Can anyone help me fix this problem before I get a refund from this potentially bad purchase? FN + F6 toggles the touchpad on and off and I have tried to turn it on and off, with and without the external mouse connected. Thanks for the help.

So, long story short. I accidentally deleted my recovery partition and now it seems like the only thing that will get my laptop up and running normally again is a recovery disc from Lenovo. I just got off the phone with customer service and they informed me that recovery discs can not be ordered in USB form.  This is where my main issue is. My Lenovo Ideapad Y500 laptop did not come with a CD-ROM Drive. With that being said, I do not want to spend $69 on a recovery disc that will require me to purchase an external CD-ROM drive that potentially won't even work... When I asked customer support if I could return and get a refund for the disc if it will not boot through an external CD-ROM drive, they said no. Has anyone been able to run a recovery disc from an external cd-rom drive successfully? Any suggestions? I'm at my wit's end with this thing...

I've been using this laptop for a few years now, and while it has its fair share of small problems (track pad not working, keyboard coming loose and sometimes not working, speakers slowly dying, start ups where the screen doesn't turn on.) Despite those issues I always found a way to either fix or at least work around the problems until today.I was just watching YouTube videos when the laptop without any warning shut off instantly, even though it was plugged in, and mostly charged. After that none of the power lights would go on at all, not even the charging one. I tried unplugging it, removing the battery, holding down the power button for 30 second, and every combination of those steps I could think of. Is there any hope of saving this laptop, or is it bricked?

Hello. As the title says, my Ideapad Y500 is starting to have some issues. A week ago it refused to shut down. Screen would turn off but not the laptop, which would remain kind of dormant. Following some advice online I uninstalled Express Cache form the Control Panel. Now the system turns off, but I have a new problem, this time booting up.Whenever I boot up the laptop it goes to the Lenovo splash screen, then black, then resets to the splash screen and stays there forever. If I shut it down manually and then boot it up again, it goes to Windows as it should, but the whole process takes from 2 to 10 minutes. If I try to restart the system, same thing happens.  If I keep doing this I fear one day it will just die on me.Added to this, I've been getting intermitent failures of the Intel RST software, which sometimes just won't work at all. Other times it's fine. I read somewhere I should update the drivers but I don't know where to find them or if hey may harm my pc even more.I'm running Windows 8.1 (64 bits). So far, besides uninstallid Express Cache, I have run chkdsk on both disks on my system and they appear to be fine (or at least nothing comes up when running the scan). Beyond this, I have no clue how to proceed. I'm not a especially tech savvy person, so any help you guys might give me will be greatly appreciated it. Also, if you can explain it as clear and simply as possible, it would be that much better. Thanks a lot!

Hello Lenovo Community,I currently have a Lenovo Y500 Ideapad. I personally love the processing power of my laptop and have found it to satisfy most of my needs. The problem I seem to be having is with the quality of the keyboard. After about a month after purchase, one of my keys (the F key) seemed to have fallen off. I noticed after examining it that the plastic that holds the keys on simply snapped off (about 5mm of cheap plastic to hold the keys on). I sent it in and have recieved a whole new keyboard within a week. 3 weeks later and my S key has broken again. I do have warranty on it but it is a pain to sendit in EVERY 3 weeks to get a single key fixed. I was wondering if this was simply my bad luck or poor Lenovo keyboard design. I am considering returning my computer or scrapping it to get a new one with better quality. Someone let me know if it's just me that is experience this or if Lenovo has serious issues with their key design.Sincerely,Angry Lenovo Customer.

Since a few weeks, the keys I and K sometimes randomly stop working. I first noticed it four weeks ago. At first I only had this problem when entering my password (I have Windows 8.1), I would try to enter my password and then notice that my "I" didn't want to work anymore. Pressing the button for a long time made it work again. When my laptop was fully booted I wouldn't notice any problem with the keys, not even a little. But slowly over time, there was no way I could make my I work when I was entering my password and then I also noticed my K didn't want to work either. It started happening randomly when I was on the internet or writing on Wordpad: my I and K would stop working. First after a bit of pressing on both keys at the same time it started working and so I ignored it, but now sometimes i'm waiting and pressing the buttons for ten minutes long before they work properly again. For 3 minutes they work, only to stop working right afterwards again. ^, *, -, and . stop working too, but those are only minor problems. I can work without punctuation, but I can't work without my K and I. I don't think there's a problem with the keys itself, I assume if it's something with the actual keyboard then my K and I would stop working seperately at different times, and not all together at the same time? They don't feel stiff either, and I also never eat at my laptop so it's definitely not bread crumbs or anything under them if there is. I  tried something that I re... Read more

If you have a USB keyboard available can you try that and see if the problem continues ?

I suspect that the USB will work without problems,  That the problem you are having is with the keyboard itself.  Since the problem is random, but slowly getting worse and centers around the K and L keys could be a good indication of a keyboard defect.   Is your system still under warranty ?

Here's a screenshot I took of it in the Device Manager, displaying an error code 10: Yay, an error! Hi All, I hope you can help, I have spent hours scouring the forums for answers. I have a friends computer I have been trying to fix, rarely find a problem I can't but this one has me stumped. From what I can tell there was a common fault with the power brick and the system completely shutting off for what appears to be no reason. So I replaced the power brick, still the same issue. I checked the ram, I used memtest 86....... the computer crashed almost instantly so maybe I thought the ram was also an issue. I replaced the ram with ram I know works, but it still completely shuts off. I did a thorough scan of the hdd and can't find any bad sectors or errors. the problem first started happening with win7 home (what it came with), I replaced it with win7 Ultimate (clean install). so it's definately not the OS. this is driving me completely insane, there seems to be no other threads I can find where the problem got to this level with this model. please help. thank you.

Hi, Since it was new, my P50 has constantly been unexpectedly turning off - I think it's overheating as it does get very hot and I need to wait a while before turning it back on otherwise it goes straight off again. I installed TP Fan Control and it shows the laptop getting to 85-90C before shutting off. The only reliable way to keep it on has been to set fan speed to manual in TPFC to 64, and to sit it with its bottom facing up while using an external monitor. There's no dust issue with the laptop, it's still very new. Is this normal? If not, what do I do? I'm pretty frustrated that I spent close to 1800 on a laptop and it can't stay on for a few hours without forcing the fan to max. I don't even use it intensively, just Outlook and Excel and Microsoft Edge open - that's it.

A:B40-80 unexpectedly turning off during POST

Hi MrLoch ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Have you completely turned it off when you initially use it ?
Would you be able to initially see the Lenovo splash screen?
Was it a complete shutdown after 5 seconds.

At this point we have not checked on how far POST stage that it would keep before turning off.

You can initialy try to turn off fast startup
And likewise set the pc to full performance on power option or turn off hybrid sleep.

Shutdown at start of POST may be failure on the hardwares , running full diagnostics can be useful.

You may call tech support and se if the International Warranty can be covered for your pc .

I have a Windows 7 desktop that is turning on unexpectedly. Some facts:

- My goal is to keep WOL configured and to prevent the unexpected starts. I do not wish to permanently disable WOL.
- I don't know how long these unexpected starts have been occurring. I do know that they have been occurring for at least 3 days.
- I have 2 NICs configured in a Team
- I have WakeOnLan configured in the BIOS and on 1 of the 2 teamed NICs
- As expected, the system wakes properly when I send a MagicPacket.
- I have a Windows 10 Desktop (different hardware, but same configuration). It does *not* turn on randomly.
- I have ruled out virus, malware, etc.
- I have no customized tasks, however I am unsure how to check if any default tasks may be causing the issue.
- I have used powercfg to check for any WakeTimers and there are none.
- When I run "powercfg -devicequery wakearmed", it only returns the one network adapter with WOL configured, as expected.

Does anyone have any suggestions? One specific question that I cannot find an answer to: Are there any Windows logs that will tell me exactly why the system started? (ie. WOL, manual Power On, etc).

Thanks in advance for the help!

I'm assuming you have win 8. Try this:On the Windows 8 Start Screen, press CNTL + ALT + DEL.On the next screen select the Power icon located in the lower Right. When the options appear, press the SHIFT key and select "Restart". When the next screen appears, select "Turn off your PC". The unit will power down completely.See if you still have the battery draining.Note: Even if the unit is off, a little drain is expected to maintain the clock, etc.

After it has turned off it can be difficult to turn back on. I have checked the  HP Support Assistant and everything it up to date. Any other ideas of what could be wrong? Thanks in advance Laura

I read about overclocking displays and read that the y500 screen was pretty good displayoc-wise, so I went ahead and went through the nvidia control panel and overclocked my 1366x768 screen from 60hz to 90hz with 5hz at a time. During this process I noticed no artifacts or any other signs of the screen being bothered by this change, and there are no skipped frames, so I have been keeping it like this for the last 20 minutes. My question is; is it safe to keep the screen at this seemingly stable ocd refresh rate? Can this harm the screen on the long run, or will it handle it? Should I go lower just to be extra safe? UPDATE: It's 24 hours later now. The update is that going from a cold boot causes the whole screen to display a white artifact on it on 90hz refresh rate. I went down to 80 but the same happened. 75 is the stable rate everyone keeps theirs at, so I'm going to try with that now, but apparently the screen can take up to around 100hz without dropping frames, it's just that you won't be able to boot up if you go from a cold boot and leave the refresh rate above 75(?).

Hello, My Y500 (one of the older models) has some weird display issues for some time now. When I try to adjust the screen angle, some horizontal green lines appear randomly on my screen. Some other parts also have vertical magenta lines. Then I have to try several angles until I find a position where the display doesn't show any problems. This happens almost every time when I open the display and turn it on. Sometimes it is less of a problem and sometimes more. If I don't move the laptop or the screen the problem does not show up. My drivers should all be up to date and I have Windows 8.1. Thank you so much for your help! (I can also make pictures if needed)

A:Y500 Display Lines and Distortion

It sounds like there's something wrong with the cable connecting the display to the motherboard.  You might want to have a look at the service manual to see how you disassemble it, and then take it apart and make sure the cable isn't being pinched by anything.  If it looks permanently damaged, try turning the laptop on with the screen detached from the case, and wiggling the wire to make sure it doesn't cause those lines again.  If it is permanently damaged, the wire is probably permanently attached to the display, so you might need to get a new one.  Hopefully it's under warranty.

I have an Ideadpad Y500 (Model 20193) running Windows 8.1. It has the original/factory 15gb mSATA SSD and ~1tb conventional SATA HDD. The two drives (SSD and HDD) are managed by Intel Rapid Storage, a sort of software RAID management utility. Although Windows Disk Management (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) sees the two drives as separate devices (see below), they are in a RAID, so to normal Windows, they just look like a single HDD. I want to remove the SSD from the RAID. It is throwing frequent errors. My Windows Event Viewer (via Control Panel \ Administrative Tools) is full of hundreds thousands of warnings about problems with the SSD. It is nearing end of life. A few times a day the computer will reboot -- but only when running Windows. When I am running Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Linux) it will run for a year without rebooting. I suspect that the Ubuntu installation is bypassing the Intel Rapid Storage software RAID and just directly using the ~1tb SATA HDD (ignoring the 15gb SSD).  I can access the Intel Rapid Storage management program in Windows, but it doesn't give me the option to break apart the RAID; to remove the SSD from the RAID. Supposedly there's a way to access it during POST by pressing ctrl-I, but that doesn't work for me. I can't figure out how to access the Intel Rapid Storage management via BIOS and that's the only place where I could (in theory) break apart the RAID and remove the SSD from the equation.  I realize, of course,... My laptop will unexpectly move the mouse to the upper right hand corner. It will also occasionally open up the action center window or settings windows. It also sometime dims the display. This has been very frustrating. I have tried a lot of recommendations online but nothing appears to work. Also while it is doing this I notice circles on the right had side of the display that come and go. It is almost like someone is controlling my laptop.

I have configured a new X260 20F6 for one of my users.  It is Windows 7, 64 bit with 16GB memory.  All current drivers are installed. When the user is in a meeting, and she picks up her machine, the display shuts off.  The computer is still running and is not in sleep or hybernation.  You must hard shut down the laptop and restart to get the screen working again. Could this be a loose cable or another configuration or hardware issue.  Please advise.  Thank you.
