X1 Carbon 6th Gen CPU idle frequencies and FAN rotation

Q: X1 Carbon 6th Gen CPU idle frequencies and FAN rotation

Hello,This is for the X1 Carbon 6th Gen.There are a number of threads this post refers to:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Yoga-3rd-gen-CPU-frequency-pegged-at-max/m...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-6th-gen-Fan-Noise/m-p/4083801#M8590...https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-X-Series-Laptops/X1-Carbon-6th-Gen-fan-always-on/m-p/4083948#M... My understanding is that the CPU idle frequency settings are set in Windows registries while the fan settings are set in the BIOS. The issues discussed below are for the laptop on AC, not on battery. CPU issue-People reported that the CPU idles at around 4GHz no matter what tasks are performed on the laptop, leading to excessive heat. Lenovo provided a solution that lowers CPU idle frequencies to approximately 0.86GHz, 1.66GHz, 4GHz for Better Battery, Better Performance, Best Performance power modes (not power plan) respectively. They incorporated this solution in an executable patch found here: https://support.lenovo.com/sa/en/solutions/ht506625Reading the notes for the patch, I see under Operating Systems:Windows 10 1709 (version 16299)Windows 10 1803 (version 17134)And further down, under Additional Information:This issue is fixed in factory preloads based on Windows 10 1803 (version 17134) and later. Only factory preloads based on Windows 10 1709 (version 16299) had this issue. If the symptoms are not noticed, then it is not necessary to apply the solution. Q1- Why is Windows 17134 mentioned if the problem only affects version 16299?Q2- Does the executable include anything other than the three pwercfg commands mentioned in the post by @someotherguy?Q3- Why isn't this patch available under the official Drivers & Software downloads page for the X1 Carbon 6th Gen? FAN issueBIOS release notes mention:<1.28> UEFI: 1.28 / ECP: 1.08 - release date 2018/08/24- (Fix) Improve power control.<1.25> UEFI: 1.25 / ECP: 1.08 - release date 2018/06/29- (Fix) Fixed an issue where ThinkPad surface temperature is higher than designed.<1.15> UEFI: 1.15 / ECP: 1.08 - release date 2018/04/19- (Fix) Improvement of FAN rotation. It is not clear to me whether all three affect fan rotation or only 1.15 does. Though a post here indicated that fan rotation settings are constantly being improved.Q4- Can someone from Lenovo clarify if the three BIOS mentioned above affect 1- CPU frequency, 2- FAN rotation, 3-both?Q5- Is any other BIOS other than those mentioned affecting 1- CPU idle or working frequency settings, 2- FAN rotation settings? What I didI have Windows 10 build 17134 as factory preload. I updated BIOS to 1.31 (release date 2018/09/28), from 1.15. I observed that the CPU still idles at 4GHz, no matter what power mode is selected. This does not tie in with the description in the patch fix for CPU mentioned earlier which states that this problem is already fixed in the factory for build 17134. I applied the three commands in Command Prompt to reduce CPU idle frequencies. I confirm that this behaves as described. Though the prior settings for those three items were not clear to me (the post mentions they were all set to 0).It is not obvious to me that BIOS 1.31 modified fan rotation settings. I do hear a little coil whine now, I am not sure it was present before the BIOS update. On AC, the laptop is somewhat quiet but does still feel warm. I find it to be much cooler on battery. Related (but different?)In addition to these two "fixes", there are downloads in Drivers & Software for this product which seem to also affect CPU and FAN settings, like in Power Management, Chipset, Software & Utilities categories like:Lenovo Intelligent Thermal Solution Driver for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad Intel Dynamic Platform & Thermal Framework Driver for Windows 10 (Version 1709 or later) - ThinkPad X1 Carbon 6th Gen (Type 20KH, 20KG)Lenovo Power Management Driver for Windows 7, 8, 8.1, 10 (32-bit, 64-bit) - LaptopsLenovo Dynamic Power Reduction Utility for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad X1 Carbon (Machine types: 20KH, 20KG) Q6- Were these installed in the factory preload? Should I install them? Will I run into conflicting settings? As a customer, I am a little lost in trying to make sense of it all. While it is informative and interesting to read and learn about these topics, I really don't feel that Lenovo customers can be expected to do this work or be associated to this extent in tuning the product and tinkering with it.

My Windows 8.1 laptop, fitted with an Intel Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 AGN wireless adapter, suddenly stopped automatically connecting to my router a few months ago. I attempted to connect wirelessly to multiple other routers, all to no avail. My laptop could only connect through an ethernet cable/tethered hotspot. I then moved houses and got the internet set up on a new provider and suddenly my laptop could connect wirelessly again! Sadly, after trying to connect to my university's wi-fi, I found out that the laptop wasn't fixed, it was simply able to connect to my new 5Ghz internet but still had trouble connecting to 2.4Ghz access points.

I've tried everything I can to fix this as my laptop is too vital to my studies for me to be without it even for a short period of time, therefore sending it off for diagnostic and repairs is out of the question for now. So far I have tried:

Installing the latest Windows 8.1 drivers for the card (currently on v.15.14.0.2)
Replacing the wireless card with a new one (same make and model)
A complete, fresh re-installation of Windows 8.1

Running out of ideas on what to try and so turning to the community for help. Even if you're not sure of a fix, determining the problem itself would also be a big help. Thanks much in advance!

A:Laptop can't connect to 2.4Ghz frequencies, only 5Ghz frequencies

Try the latest wireless driver from the laptop manufacturer's web site.

If that doesn't work then try the latest driver directly from Intel's site.

I have the Gen 4 fully loaded. My idle temps are anywhere from 35C to 55C. Just from booting up. It can go from the 40s to the 50s in the drop of a hat just opening a program. Are these computers really that sensitive? If so I'll just buy a Mac. Was running VirtualBox last night installing some OS'  and I'd hit 73-76C or so. Turned it on today, let it stay idle for about 10min then did a couple stress tests. Ran Prime95 v26.6 x64 Small FFTs test for 3min and had a max temp of 81C. Ran Cinebench R15's CPU test and hit a max temp of 73C. I've had this for almost a month yet it's only been turned on 10 times or less. I'm building a workstation for a client and was stress testing it the past couple days so I thought I'd check the temps on the laptop and I was less than pleased. My MacBook Pro never got above 50-55C under full load. Should I make a ticket or do these temps sound normal?

I have been using this laptop with the Thinkpad TB3 Dock successfully for over a year and a half. Recently, when the laptop sits connected to the dock at idle (no user interaction) after 4-5 minutes, CPU Utilization drops to a fixed 7% at 0.19 Ghz - you can see the CPU utilization graph go to flat line in the Task Manager. At this point, a user interaction will interrup this state, but it will take 15-45 seconds to get back to a usable UI. Mouse cursor moves fine, but interacting with any window is laggy/non-existent until the CPU speed ramps back up. This condition happens ONLY when docked to a TB3 dock. It does not happen on battery, and it does not happen when plugged in to a power adapter. I have tested multiple Thinkpad TB3 docks with same behavior. I have purchased a new CalDigit TS3 Plus dock with same behavior. I have changed among 3-4 different TB3 cables. It happens whether all my peripherals are plugged in to the dock or none of them. I am on the latest build of Windows 10 (1809, installed today - 1803 installed until today). Same behavior.I have updated the dock firmware, the Thunderbolt software, everything Thunderbolt related I can find, including rolling back to previous drivers. I have manually gone through the entire list of drivers at https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/products/laptops-and-netbooks/thinkpad-x-series-laptops/thinkpad-... and installed the latest versions of every driver. I'm at a loss so looking here for any suggestions of... Hello All - I have a Thinkpd Carbon X1 Yoga - 1st Generation that does not wake and "hangs" at the Windows 10 login screen.  This has happened for several months and all forum posts show this is an old issue. SymptomsI lock my computer.  After about 5 hours of idle usage when I attempt to login I see a blank Windows 10 login screen (no time, no notifications) and I am unable to login.  Windows Hello from my fingerprint reader is active but it just flashes green or yellow.  If I manually put the computer to sleep it also hangs at a blank login screen when I restore the computer.  If I keep the computer active by playing video or audio I can login but I want my computer idle. I have installed all known Windows 10 updates.  Not sure about Lenovo firmware.  Need some guidance thanks!

Is it possible to pick up radio frequencies and interference on computers? I opened my Windows Media Player today and heard, very quietly, a talk radio show and was flabbergasted. It has never, ever, ever happened before. I don't listen to internet radio so I don't know what it could be. Completely dumbfounded over here.

A:Radio frequencies?

Yes, it is possible. Computers are an FCC Class 15, sub-part B product, which means that while they may not cause interference in other products, they must accept any interference caused by something else. That's why your PC can pick up talk radio. You were either picking up a local radio station, or something nearby was radiating that signal.

That's it in layman's terms. You can look up the officialese in your owner's manual if you like.

Hey all, this is my first post here, its great to be here!

Anyways,

I just purchased a new motherboard, cpu, and memory (wanted to finally switch from AMD)
I purchased the Core 2 Quad 6600, Gigabyte P35-DS3P, and 2x1GB of Ballistix Tracer
I have Windows XP Pro w/ all current updates

The speed of the memory is DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)
and my motherboard supports DDR2 1066 and dual channel memory

When I run CPU-Z it says Max Bandwith for each stick is PC2-6400 (400mHz)
The timings are :
Frequency 533mHz, CAS Latency 5

is the frequency correct? it seems slower, i mean my old pc-3200 memory was running at 400mHz CAS latency 2.5.

Just wondering what I would need to change in the BIOS, this mobo's got great OC'ing tools

Thanks for looking appreciate any help!

A couple of months ago, I built a capable gaming rig (E8500, ATi HD4850, 4GB PC-6400 RAM on a Gigabyte EP35-DS3L with Vista x64), and set it up. It was my first time building a computer from scratch on my own, but I made it and recently overclocked my CPU.

I intended to overclock it to 3.6GHz, and it looked like that in the BIOS but using CPU-Z, it reported it at 6 x 380.0 MHz or 2280 MHz. It does change to the 3.6GHz at times in the program, but never in the output file. I'm assuming this is because of some energy saving thing? The mobo did come with an energy saving program, but I disabled it and stopped it from starting on boot, but I guess I may have not gotten rid of it properly.

CPU-Z also reports that my RAM is PC-5300 (333 MHz x 2), even though the RAM was sealed (at least, it looked like it). My CPU-Z output file is attached, if you want to take a look at it.

Regards,
Cal

Indeed the board does but as is shown

So your ram although I do not know which exact model of Vengeance it is - as explained in your motherboard manual must when OC not only be configured alone for ram but as part of the sophisticated procedure on that motherboard - where if you wish you can simply use the 5 step automated process explained on your manual
Have you checked if your Corsair ram is on the QVL list from Asus
https://www.asus.com/uk/Motherboards/ROG-STRIX-Z270E-GAMING/HelpDesk_QVL/
That list cannot of course list all ram that will work with that board, but what is listed has been tested by Asus

This presumes the problem existed - not only on one or two games but across the board

Hi y'all,
I recently bought a bluetooth adapter for my speakers, so that I can play from my phone or PC without connecting cables. Works great, except that on the PC my bluetooth mouse conflicts with the speaker -- when I move, click or scroll the audio pops and cuts out. I'm guessing it's because they're on the same frequency, but I'm wondering if there's any way I can adjust that so that they don't conflict. Any help is appreciated!

Go into bios set timings with the 3200mhz?voltage?
Or will putting in the Stick automatically adjust the to what it needs to be?

Good day Win7 Community,

This is my first post on here, as many users, I come here because I am having an issue.

I bought my new computer at friday.
I began installing my desired programs and games.
But as I progressed I found out something was going on with my sound.

I own a 5.1 surround sound speaker set so I'd like to use it, I believe I have stereo sound on it right now because I want my speakers to have sound all the time instead of having either music or voice-only.

On to the issue;

At first, I used my audio outputs of my motherboard, but that didn't really work well with my speaker set.
So I got my old 5.1 surround card (PCI) out and installed it into my new computer and plugged my speaker set, I could now use all 5 speakers.

I uninstalled the motherboard sound drivers and installed the sound card ones.
Fiddled with the settings the way I like it (sound volumes on each speaker)

I got it all working.. only, with youtube,WMP,VLC Mediaplyer, whatever produces sound.
When a high frequentie sound comes along, it gets scrambled which really ruins my fun of my new computer.

List of hardware/Software:

Motherboard: ASUS P8H67
Sound Card: Trust SC-5100 5.1 Surround Sound Card

Motherboard Sound Drivers: Realtek High Definition Audio Driver

Sound Card Driver: Trust 5.1 Soundcard 14319

Recap:
I uninstalled Realtek and installed the trust 5.1 sound card drivers.
I tried fiddling with WMP's settings etc. but no luck so far.

I hope someone can assist me in this struggle.

Ever since the first few days , I've been encountering BSOD frequently in every Instance of usage, although the occurrence of them depends on the system load. When the system is in an Idle State, BSOD occurs in 15-45 mins of being idle ; When in moderate use, such as downloading space intensive contents or watching movies it takes 75-90 mins before BSOD happens ; when in heavy use, such as graphics intense gaming or rendering processes, the system runs for about 3-5 Hours before the BSOD occurs. I use Windows 7 x64 as the primary OS and 8.1 is for guest users. I've tried Memtests, HDD tests, Processor Tests, BIOS tests and all turned out positive with flying colors and also tried disconnecting all parts and reconnecting them again, yet BSOD is a common occurrence.  I just bought Lenovo IP510IKB earlier this week, and I really like it, but I think something is wrong with the speakers, when I play music or any kind of audio there is some kind of distortion or vibration at certain frequencies, I don't know how to describe it, it's like there is something vibrating inside the laptop. I tried installing lenovo Harman drivers but the problem is still there, I also tried Windows generic drivers and other softwares like FxSound, but nothing helped, something that I also tried is muting the left speaker and the right speaker, at first I thought muting the left speaker fixed the problem but after a while I noticed the same distortion but not as much. I tried living with this annoying problem as it's not always there, but it really appear when listening to piano, but I can't live with it anymore it's driving me crazy and I can't find any related topics about this problem in the IP510IKB. I live in Egypt and I bought this laptop from souq.com (something like amazon.com) about a week ago, and I don't think I will be able to return it, is it even something that the warranty covers?

Can someone settle an arguement I'm having with my Nephew. He says that the default clock settings of my GeForce 3 card are too low. At the moment they are 175 Core Clock Frequency and 400 Memory Clock Frequency. We've looked at specifications for this card on the web and in the manual but both have not provided us with an answer. If someone could clear this up for us or provide me with a link that would tell me then I would really appreciate it.

That's the correct clock rate for the card. Around page 4 of theis review you can see in the graphs the base clock and some overclocking benchmark results.

here is a page that shows the standard clockrate.

175/400 seems to be the standard clockrate on most GF3 TI200s. Do a Google search for "TI200 review" and you'll see. I think your nephew owes you lunch or something.

Windows 7 Enterprise 64bit
Clean installation to windows 7 from Windows XP professional
Hardware 18 months old
OS installed 2 weeks ago

I am currently facing the lovely BSOD error. The computer was recently upgraded from windows XP to Windows 7 enterprise 64bit , this was a fresh installation from XP. The computer originally came with pre installed with Windows 7 installed but was downgraded to XP to meet company IT requirements. We have now been given the go ahead to trial windows 7. However after installation we are now facing issues of very random BSOD moments. Sometimes while using access or excel. At other times the computer could be totally idle. I would like to mention that our IT team upgraded the RAM in the computer from 4gb to 8gb prior to the Windows 7 installation. I do have a feeling that there is an issue with the memory which is causing this issue. I have attached my BSOD zip pack and would be very appreciative if one of the guru's could assist me on the matter.

Thanks

My display turns off (goes to black screen) after 5 minutes idle, even though I have display set to turn off after 30 minutes idle and the computer to sleep after 1 hour idle (this was done under Power Options in the Control Panel). This just started after the last big Microsoft updates were installed 2-3 weeks ago. I can not seem to change this, no matter what my settings are. Both my husband and I installed all the updates, yet his computer is not doing this; he changed all my settings to match his, but my display still turns off after 5 minutes. What's up with this, and how do I get my display to stay on for more than 5 minutes' idle time?

A:Display goes dark after 5 min idle; set to turn off after 30 min idle

This is not a laptop is it ?

Give us the exact make and model of pc.

Check the monitor itself for any sleep settings.

And you set windows to never let the monitor go off, correct ?

Hi!I just got a new "X1 Carbon 5th Gen - Kabylake (Type 20HR, 20HQ)" and a "X1 Carbon Thunderbolt 3 Dock". I have an external screen connected to the dock and it works fine (VGA connection). I also have an other monitor with display (DP) connection that I want to use. But my computer can't find the other monitor, only the one with VGA connection. Is there any easy ways to fix this problem?Best regards

I've been having latency issues lately on P5Q pro turbo while streaming radio, netflix or watching youtube (The typical popping & stuttering I've been reading about). I don't know how long I have had it but I just started noticing a week or 2 ago. Been idle all night while I slept and turn the monitors on first thing today and still getting red spikes.

I have Atheros? L1E Gigabit LAN controller featuring AI NET 2 on a P5Q pro turbo motherboard and have tried driver versions 1.0.0.15, 1.0.0.16 and 1.0.0.18 versions of the Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI ethernet controller. The driver version on the MB CD is 1.0.0.16.

I have downloaded this package from this site Drivers Informer: Atheros AR8121/AR8113/AR8114 PCI-E Ethernet Controller overview Which says Win7 should be 1.0.0.49 but when I installed it, it only installed 1.0.0.18. It gave no option which one to install. I cant seem to install .49 version. Funny thing is version .18 isn't even listed in the above link.

NDIS 6.20 is the worst latency offender. Can I safely put NDIS 6.30 or 6.40 on Windows 7x64?

I have tried disabling LAN, video and sound in the device manager as well as a backup Logitech BT mouse driver.

I have 2 video card slots on my MB each with a card. I swapped the card positions around in case something was conflicting. According to How to Detect an IRQ Conflict | eHow I have no conflicting devices and no yellow exclamations.

First, this really belongs in another forum section. Audio may be affected but its more some system or driver problem.

However, on the sound side, looking at the Device Manager listing, I don't really see a true hardware driver for your PC sound. I see ATI High Definition and NVIDIA High Definition but those are most likely HDMI audio drivers, not PC sound drivers. VIA, according to what I find on the ASUS site is the correct on-board audio.

https://www.asus.com/Motherboards/P5...Desk_Download/

Another Item I see is a wireless adapter. Wi-Fi is a know cause of audio dropout. Disable that or even unplug it if you are not using Wi-Fi. If you are using Wi-Fi, stop and use a wired LAN connection.

The so called driver sites do not always have the latest or even correct drivers. Best to use the ones from the motherboard vendor, or in the case of Intel devices direct from Intel.

Finally, download and run the free Resplendence Latency Mon program. It is much more than the limited DPC Latency Checker program.

I used the 1st gen X1 Carbon for a while and found out that it's very robust and the touch feeling is very good. I guessed that all sides (A+B+C+D) of it are made by carbon fiber. Correct me if I'm wrong. But when I use my X1 Yoga 1st gen, which has only carbon fiber on A side (the cover behind screen) and uses "Super Magnesium" on C+D sides (the cover around keyboard and behind the keyboard), this design bring several problems: 1. " Super Magnesium" is still metal, if you crash it by accident, you may leave a scrath on it permanently, this happens more on edges;2. what's more, the paint at the edge of " Super Magnesium" will be rubbed away with time goes on, and you will see the white metal not the ThinkPad black;3. metal will suffer from deformation by force;4. the D side of my X1 yoga feels loose when you hold it with one hand, which make you feel cheap of this $1500 machine. Thus I hope the next gen of X1 Yoga or X1 Carbon can provide a pure carbon fiber version, for better build quality and user experience. How do you guys think about it?

i dont, its a personal thing
but loads of members stick with the one. loads change
when people are happy to change their sigs it gives the gfx'rs some practice as they need it badly

sounds like you are in the market for more, put yourself forward in the sigs and avatar thread as a willing Guinea pig

Hey there,
I had a couple of questions regarding the logs that are gathered on ATA and the DB.
I understood that on the Gateway and Center, the maximum size of the logs are 50 MB and that when you have more than 10 logs with the same name, the oldest log gets deleted, am I right???
1. Is there any sizing plan for the logs needed when using ATA?
2. Is there any limits (size, time of availability of the logs, rules, etc) on the logs that are gathered/stored in the Database?
3. How do Logs work/are seen on MongoDB?
Hope someone can help me out,
Regards

Hey Jackhandle

I'm also trying to rotate text. You can do it by using word art, but I'm hoping someone out there can help us, or let us know if it is possible to rotate text in a table. I'm trying to rotate it diagonally. In excel it is very easy, but word doesn't seem to allow it (I did try pasting from excel, but it didn't work). Any ideas anyone?

I have a new issue since installing Windows 8, and I need help.

I am a member of a stock photography site where I periodically upload images for sale.
Since I installed Windows 8, ALL my vertical images appear horizontal on that website after I upload them.
In my computer, rotation is displayed correctly, both in Windows explorer and in my several photo software programs I use.

However, during this upload process, rotation information is lost, and vertical images always end up horizontal oriented after the upload, and this is a big problem for me.

Problem did NOT exist in Windows 7, just appeared after windows 8 upgrade.

Any help will be much appreciated?
Thank you
