Office Security Issue: leading to CERT/CC link

Q: Office Security Issue: leading to CERT/CC link

I think one of the Moderators changed my title of my last post so I have put it like this. The CERT/CC is a recognised security site.

CERT® Advisory CA-2001-28 Automatic Execution of Macros

An intruder can include a specially crafted macro in a Microsoft Excel or PowerPoint document that can avoid detection and run automatically regardless of the security settings specified by the user

Microsoft Excel 2002
Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Yes, Eddie. I did. This forum is really for questions, not tips/tricks or informational articles, but I thought we'd leave it in here for a while. I'd like you to copy your above post and place it in the original. I'll change the title of it again:

Excel and PowerPoint have a macro security framework that controls
the execution of macros and prevents macros from running
automatically. Under this framework, any time a user opens a
document the document is scanned for the presence of macros.
If a document contains macros, the user is notified and asked
if he wants to run the macros or the macros are disabled entirely,
depending on the security setting. A flaw exists in the way macros
are detected that can allow a malicious user to bypass macro

A malicious attacker could attempt to exploit this vulnerability
by crafting a specially formed Excel or PowerPoint document with
macro code that would run automatically when the user opened it.
The attacker could carry out this attack by hosting the malicious
file on a web site, a file share, or by sending it through email

I recently acquired the XP Security virus and used the suggestions on your site through use of your routines and manual removal of files. I was left with a ping.exe issue that hogged computer resources to the point the system completely locked, except for mouse movements. Unfortunately, I saw your suggestion to use the ComboFix.exe before I saw your outline of how to begin the troubleshooting procedure. I was not connected to the internet when I executed ComboFix. The extraction list scrolled on the screen and the program seemed to terminate normally, but I could not find any log generated by ComboFix (I looked further than in C:\).
I am running XP Home Edition V 5.1 under Service Pack 3 and keep up with all updates. My system now seems to be back to the point where I can only erratically execute any programs, My Computer Icon, or a normal shutdown in Normal Mode. I have to do a power down in Normal Mode since the normal shut off does nothing. I also have to power down from Safe Mode, where during a normal shut down process I get a repeating Windows Application Error ? ?The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000017). Click on OK to terminate the application.?
I ran the DeFogger, DDS and GMER in Normal mode, but I encountered ?problems? with GMER. The system shut it down and froze the computer in Normal mode before I could save the log, so I had to power down and rerun GMER, stopping it after it started looking at program/data files. Hi all,

Got a question if you please..

We recently installed an SSL cert as we were getting annoyed with the self cert ones.

Since we've installed this SSL cert our out of office isn't working. You can enable it either in outlook or OWA and set the message to both internal and external, but its just not actually being sent internal or externally.

It was working fine before the ssl was installed, but not afterwards. Any idea on where I need to look for this?

A:Out of Office stopped working since SSL cert installed

Sorry - I also want to add that all the pc's are for some reason set to use outlook anywhere (even though half of them are internal users only.. Not sure why or how that was setup?!)

Test exchange connectivity site came up with:

Testing SSL mutual authentication with the RPC proxy server.
Verification of mutual authentication failed.
Tell me more about this issue and how to resolve it
Additional Details

That site above tells you what it should match, our SSL cert says mail.domain.com and on the http over rpc it also shows as being "msstd:mail.domain.com"

Windows XP. I installed MSOffice to verify something, then uninstalled it. Since doing this, the HTML links I've inserted in Open Office calc no longer work.

I get a red x windows error message saying: Window's cannot find 'http://blahblah'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file.....etc.

Apparently, MSOffice changes some setting preventing the links in Open Office calc from working. I need help re-establishing functionallity.

Ran a full scan on my comp and it says it detected 5 dangerous events. The option to disinfect was grayed out (I use Kapersky Lab) - I only have quarantine as an option and when I picked that, it asked me to choose what file to open. Eh? Does the fact that my antivirus already detected the events mean it's been handled or I need to do something? Because earlier a security certificate window kept popping up, asking me if I want to install it. I didn't, of course, and worked up the courage to delete all the files the antivirus detected as threats.

....That may have been a stupid move, y/y? The window is still popping up but not as frequently. Is it even a related problem?

I'm hoping someone can help as earlier today we got a pop up on the bottom right icons about a security issue and then it started running. It looked like the windows security at first then it started showing all these infected files wanting us to purchase the full version. We didn't and powered down the computer as we couldn't quit out of it.

We rebooted the PC and it loaded again. We then went to msconfig and removed startup item wexjsfts which was running a file called uxrxfutssd.exe in AppData\local\aikqaopyc\ directory. This seems to have stopped this software running.

We ran Malware bytes and removed about 4 Trojans etc that it found.

Problem however wasn't solved as we could not longer access servers with some of our business software we use. It turned out it had put a proxy in the settings. We removed this also which resolved this issue.

Thinking everything was ok now we carried on using the PC but we soon found out that we are stuck with Google redirects and also the odd page loading in a separate tab. When it goes to a "redirect" page it has a curly type image next to the URL.

Any help much appreciated as this is the machine we run our family business on so it is extremely important to us.

Many thanks in advance.

Good day all! I'm working on a friend's X1 Carbon laptop that she had someone system reset, and now it will not stay on. Powering on, it will go into a system recovery, where i was attempting to restore to a date further back. But during the restore process, it freezes with a graphical glitch shown in the image, then starts to power cycle on and off. I've also opened bios too, but while in bios, it will start the same glitch and freeze for about a minute, the start power cycling. I'm not certain what it may be. My initial though was harddrive failure, but since it is in bios it could be the motherboard? If anyone has any insight, please give me a shout. I may have it sent in to Lenovo for repairs otherwise. Thank you,~Ethan

I installed office 2007 ultimate alongside office 2003 professional. Microsoft outlook and publisher was removed from my office 2003 prior to office 2007 installation. I also opted not to install microsoft outlook 2007.

It seems that each time I load word 2007 or 2003 after previously opening the other version (ie. load 2003 followed by 2007 OR load 2007 followed by 2003), a window would opened up indicating that either the configuration or installation process is taking place, hence delaying the startup. However, once the program has started, it would run without problem. I do not intend to unistall my 2003. There was no problem loading excel 2003/2007, powerpoint 2003/2007 and access 2003/2007.

I'm having a problem that is very very strange....purchased a D-Link DIR-625 router and a lenovo laptop. The Lenovo laptop has Vista home Prem. and an Intel 3945abg (wireless).
I have set up the router and everything seems great, I can connect the laptop to the home wireless network - surf the net, everything is great, until I try to use Microsoft Excel and Word. Excel will go into "not responding" and take a very very long time to work itself out. End up going into task manager and ending it.

If I connect to my neighbours home wireless network (linksys) I don't have any problems at all with Microsoft Excel/Word.

Why? why would a router be somehow access my Excel? what is causing this to happen with the d-link and not the linksys. And trust me I've tested every which way I can....i'm certain it is the d-link.

Hi all

I have a branch office that uses a low grade home router vpn link to connect to our main office this causes very slow response time when users are connecting to mapped drives.

Im thinking of going the rodc route further down the road when we go to server 2008 to improve log on times, but a rodc to my understanding does not have anything to do with the mapped drives as its not a full copy of the main office DC.

For now id like to speed up the access times to the mapped drives for the branch office users, Im musing over having them stored locally on a pc hooked onto their network and then somehow have the changes mirrored to the main office.

Anyone got an idea?

Thanks for reading

A:Branch office slow link

What are the specifics of your branch office's internet connection? What is slow for the users with mapped drives? Is it mounting the network share and/or the actual file transfers? What router are we talking about?

I hope you're aware that many low grade VPN routers suffer drastic performance issues when they have to do any type of encrypted traffic. You can have a VPN router perform at say around 20 to 30 Mbps of routed throughput but only do about 1 to 2 Mbps when moving data across a VPN tunnel. Also, you may have to manually adjust your MTU settings on both ends of the VPN tunnel to account for fragmentation and overhead of the VPN tunnel.

Depending on the speed of your remote branch Internet connection, it may be worth the expense to upgrade the router to see if this helps. It'll be cheaper than the other alternative which is to implement a WAN acceleration product.

OK here is the problem. I am trying to network 3 computers, all running windows XP. 2 desk top and one laptop. One desktop connects through cat5, the other two are going to be wireless connections. These computers were all previously connected through a d-link 713 P, which has since died. I have replaced it with a D-link DI-624 revision C.

This is basically what I did:

1)Connect the Router’s WAN port to the MODEM’s Ethernet port using Cat5.

2) Connect the computer’s NIC to the router’s LAN port(s) using Cat5.

3) Reset the MODEM. Wait for it to Snyc.

4) Plug the router into the power receptacle and wait for it to sync. Run Cat5 from router to computer.

5) Reboot the computer.

On the computer that is connecting to the router via the cat5 I encountered a problem. It cannot access the routers web based configuration utility, or the internet for that matter.

The LED on the router shows it as connected. Checking the LAN properties the IP address comes up as 169.254.XXX.XXX.

I have tried manually configuring the IP address to up to, the routers default IP should be The range of IP addresses I tried should be within the default range of the router according to D-link.

Now upon setting the IP addresses manually I do get traffic (send/receive) on the LAN connection, but only for a few seconds. I’m thinking the problem is with the network configuration I am using, but I followed the installation instructions to the letter. ... Read more

A:Home office network and a D-link DI-614

The fact that you are getting a 169.254.x.x address indicates you are not connecting to the router's DHCP server. This could be a router configuration issue, a bad cable, bad port on the router, bad NIC, or something amiss with the XP configuration.

I'd start by trying a new cable and another port on the router. Also, reset the router to factory defaults for your tests, since that should enable the DHCP server.

My company has two offices located within a block of one another. Since we work on a lot of the same projects, we use a single server to house our files located in the main office. It is a small company with only about 15 people in each office.

The problem is that the connection to the server from the satellite office is unbearably slow. Opening simple Word documents or PDFs takes forever. It takes at least 30 mins to transfer 50 megs of data.

I am not the network admin and have a relatively basic knowledge of networking principles, but here's what our setup is to the best of my knowledge:
Three T1 lines (not sure if they are bonded or not) that link the offices.
I believe the satellite office accesses the server via some sort of VPN, although I am not clear on exactly how VPNs work, so this may not be accurate.
We have a 4th T1 line that is solely dedicated to our VOIP phone system.
Here is the lineage of data coming in:

3 T1 Lines >> Tasman 1004 (aggregates the T1 signal, i think) >> Juniper SSG20 (firewall) >> Netgear GS116 switch >> Computers

I don't know what it looks like on the other side, but it seems to me that with as much bandwidth as we appear to have, we should be able to access the server on the other side faster than we currently do. Thank you in advance; any help would be appreciated greatly!

A:Slow inter-office link

1. you need to know what connections are at the other office
2. are these T1's frame relay or point to points?
3. are the switches at each side managed/vlan capable?
4. are you using vlans?
If all three come into the router they are not bonded.

Odds are one of the three T1's is another voice T1. So you have one VT1 coming into the VoIP pbx and then another VT1 going to the pbx at the remote site.

If you are not vlaning the VoIP traffic this can have a major impact on your throughput.

I bought Office Ultimate through the itsnotcheating website quite a while ago now when the offer was first introduced. I've just upgraded to Win 7 and need to reinstall it. I still have the valid product key but do not have any of my order details or the original downloaded file.

Is there a legitimate link/source where I could download this file from?

Thanks very much for any help.

A:Office Ultimate 2007 download link?

Hi there
try the Trial and then use your legitimate key.

Try Microsoft Office 2007 - Download Microsoft Office Software

I assume this works since MS will send a key if you want to purchase it.

If it doesn't work just ring the activation center (activate by phone) and explain the problem -- say you've downloaded the trial but you've got a valid key.

They'll give you a new product code.

In spite of a lot of negative postings that you see about MS -- they are actually quite reasonable if you explain the problem.

Hello, Welcome to SF,

Try these steps and see whether it works

In Word 2007, go to Office button > Word Options > Proofing > AutoCorrect

Q: A+ cert

Hey, im just wondering if ne one knows the answer to this:
(since there are 2 parts to A+ cert.)
I took the old core hardware A+ test, 220-301, last summer, and i have school so i didnt take the other one. Now i want to take it the other half (OS), but there are new A+ tests now, so im wondering if i take the old OS test i still get the cert? Or is it useless? Or do i need to write both new ones?

A:A+ cert

Likely yes. Ask them. It all depends on whether they gave you a time frame by which you had to take the second test?
How much did you spend for the test taken? Did you pass well with a good score?

We have a working DA environment using a single server, we are planning to go NLB  and Multisite but MS advises not to use a self signed cert for NLS which we currently do use.
I have created a Web server cert for our NLS server following the below issued by our internal CA

I add the NLS cert on our DA server, click next and then go to apply the DA settings.
When I do this it says DNS name does not exist. I can create this manually before adding the cert but it gets removed. If I tick use self-signed cert the DNS name gets created automatically.
I can't understand what I'm doing wrong and why DA will not accept our CA issued NLS cert

Hey all,

We've just set up a Cisco 3000 series VPN on our network, and are using an internal server here as the certificate server for the VPN clients.

Just one problem. I'm still fairly new to doing new things on Windows 2000.

So I've been going through Microslop's site trying to figure out exactly how to set up the certificate server here. But I haven't found anything which explains everything, or if I need to install something, (besdies Cisco's VPN client) on the client computers.

I've created a couple keys through Certificate Server, but have no idea how to go about using them, or how to view the keys like in NT, like;
You know, that big encrypted key.
So if anyone knows a quick explanation of this, or where to find a description of what I need to do, I will be forever indebted to you.

Dear Folks,
My image shows part of an email found in my AOL spam folder. The message is from EDF whom I'm in the process of switching to from Scottish Power. As far as I know, EDF only have my gmail address.
In my image, the text in blue is a clickable link. AOL block all links & I never use any link in an email.
My question to you is:- how do I check it?

A:Email link security.

Go on EDF site, and see if there is a link to the voucher, if not its a scam. Forward on to the phishing email address EDF should have so they can investigate.
I have not received an Email off my provider as regards the discount.

I installed ATA with the self signed certs as i was having trouble getting it to work.  Now that I have it working i want to put a real cert on the management site.  What is needed to complete this?

Do i simply go to iis and change the cert?
Do i also need to change it in the configuration page where it references it by ip address?
When i do that, do i need to redeploy / update the gateways?

I am on 1.6 as of an hour ago.  Please reference the version number you are familiar with in your responses.  I would imagine that they are the similar if not identical but i want to be sure we are on the same page.

I'm getting an error msg on my own website after installing my Verisign SSL Seal. Certificate itself works fine, but the seal (click here to verify) is giving errors on one IE browser and not another.

Can you guys please help me by telling me if you see an error msg displayed on the IE information bar when you visit my page:

I'm getting an error with my new Verisign SSL cert on my computer at work but not at the one at home. Using IE on both computers, same version, v. 7.0. I don't get this error on FireFox on either computer.

The error I get is:

To help protect your security, IE has blocked this website from displaying content with security certificate errors.

I don't understand why it's showing up on my work computer and I'm hoping it's not showing up on other people's computers.

I would love it if I got a lot more computers checking to see if they get the same error.

Please help!

Thank you,

Open IE7

Click Tools
Click Internet Options
Click the Security tab
Click the Internet icon
Click Custom level
Locate Display mixed content
Click the radio button next to Enable (the default setting is 'was Prompt'
