Preferred Solution: No advanced or power menus in BIOS, please help!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

we are trying to do a rather off-the-wall thing. the big picture: we have classified data that we want to encrypt on all writable partitions on our hard drive(s). we need to store the encryption/decryption "keys" - two redundant 32 byte entries - for this data external to these drives. one place we thought of was in bios. these keys will be used for every read/write from/to the hard drives, so we would like them be be accessible in the lower part of ram like all other bios data is after bootup (if possible). the keys may need to be changed sometimes at boot-up by a third party application and NOT by entering the standard bios menus, which may be the trickiest part. is any of this at all possible?
thanks!

A:How does one write to (and read from) bios without using typical bios menus?

Sure it is, but why do it the hard way? (You would have to rewrite the operating system kernel/drivers to do this unless you are using DOS or something)

There are industry standard solutions like TPM chips on motherboards, smart cards, security tokens, pinpads, hardware hard drive encryption devices..

Any help is appreciated.

What Power plan are you using ?

Balanced, Power Saver or High Performance ?

Also, run a System File Check

Want to change advanced power options with a few keyboard presses?

I like changing advanced power options all the time, mostly CPU throttle and brightness (the two most important factors in battery life). I used to have a separate power plan just for different CPU throttles, but that seemed a little inefficient (as did opening advanced power options under several layers of GUI). So I just finished writing up some batch scripts to change advanced power settings.

All you need to do is copy the attached files into the System32 folder (C:\Windows\System32\), for which you'll need to provide administrator privileges. Then, just press Win+R and type the name of the setting followed by the value. For example:

"bri 30" will change the screen brightness to 30%.
"maxp 50" will change the maximum CPU throttle to 50%.
"sleep 5" will change the time until sleep to 5 minutes.

Like so:

By the way, you can change the command just by changing the name of the file. Renaming "disp.bat" to "Display Brightness.bat" will let you type "Display Brightness 4" instead of "disp 4".

Let me know what you think. I can make one for each and every advanced power setting, all you gotta do is ask. Enjoy! (Don't mind giving me rep if you use this, I spent quite some time on this )

System32.zip

A:Useful tool for power enthusiasts on the go (advanced power options)

Well written! Rep given.

You might also find this batch file interesting. It deletes all file in the .tmp folder. You'll have to edit it in Notepad to change the xxx's to your user name though. After, just right click it and select run as administrator.

More info if anyone wants to write batch files:

I have a VN7-572G. The presented BIOS settings are sort of lackluster for a gaming laptop and I know what I'm doing enough to tinker with more advanced settings. I've examined the BIOS for this laptop and there are a ton of locked-away settings. Unfortunately, there is some sort of BIOS security implemented that prevents me from just flashing a modified BIOS onto this laptop. Is there perhaps some sort of way to officially access more advanced settings or any way of requesting one from Acer?

Mine is an HP Pavillion 077TX notebook PC running on Windows 8.1 x64. The BIOS version installed on my MoBo is Insyde H20 F.43 dated 03-08-2016, as displayed in "msinfo32.exe". My laptop is out of warranty now and i wish to unlock the hidden Advanced menu in the Insyde BIOS so as to gain the Administrative control over my own laptop. I also read on a dedicated non-official forum for HP products that suffer major issues in HP manufactured laptops (I was unaware of these issues before purchasing my machine), that pressing the "A" key after "F10" key in the laptop keyboard, activates "Advanced" options in the Insyde H20 BIOS for some HP laptops.Unfortunately that didn't work for me. Many of my games refuse to start and graphic softwares fail to render, blaming the insuffiecient on board Intel graphics. Hello MBlackburn, and welcome to Vista Forums.

You might run a sfc /scannow command to see if it can find and fix any bad system files that may be causing this.

System Files - SFC Command

If this does not help, then you try a System Restore using a restore point dated before you had this problem.

And is it important?

I just got WIN98 installed on an older (1998 or so) computer, and had several problems showing in the device manger.

Had to find and download a modem driver, and that's all set.

The only other yellow problem ! is on ADVANCED POWER MANAGEMENT SUPPORT. Looking into it it says it's either not installed, or all the drivers aren't there. It's file version 4.10.1998 (Microsoft)

I've been going through the update driver wizard, and it says it already has a driver, from the WIN98 Install CD. And I can look for an update at MSN, if I am a registered user. I don't think I am/can I used an old install CD that came with another computer I had. I don't remember if I registered it at the time (it probably made me )

Anyway, if the Advanced Power Management Support isn't really important I'm not going to worry about it.

Also, this computer (which was given to me to practice on) has 2 harddrives. Both seem to be 3 gb. One was set as Primary Master and one Primary Slave. I know nothing about having 2 hd, and it was confusing when I formatted and reinstalled (having a C and D drive for hd and E for CD ROM, which was changed to F when the diagnostic tools were loaded onto E, it didn't seem to be showing F after that) so I set the slave one to NONE in the settings.

I can probably just leave it like this, my daughter is going to use it for her online college classes, and it won't have much more than maybe WORD an... Read more

No, that is NOT the fastest computer to game on.  Here is a little primer ... E series devices are 'Entry level' products, designed for the casual user who wants to do the basics at a reasonable price.  These models are not targeted at heavy users like gamers, photo editors, video makers, etc.  For big time gaming power, take a look at the Predator line.  Now THAT is a gaming platform!
