T470 no signs of charging, power, etc.

Q: T470 no signs of charging, power, etc.

So I just recieved my T470 today, and I eagerly wanted to at least boot it up, but much to my surprise, when I plugged the cable in, I recieved no indication that it was plugged in or charging whatsoever. No green light anywhere, no heat, no nothing. I've tried various outlets, a different cord for the brick to the outlet itself, I checked out the battery on the inside and out to make sure it was all connected, etc. To say it's disatisfying is an understatement. Unless I can quickly get a cable before classes start (in one week), planning on a full refund because this is beyond disappointing to not be able to even using the dang thing.Edit: I have no proof it could be the power brick either, considering since there's no real way I could tell whether it's something with the motherboard or something like that.Edit 2: Tried another Thinkpad's power cord and brick, didn't charge or even show an indicator that it was charging (no green lights). Probably just gonna RMA it and hope for the best.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My original 45W slim connector charger failed and I decided I wanted to try charging with the Type-C port, which was on option when I originally configured the laptop. I purchased a Karstcave wall charger which claims to be able to charge 61W using all the following protocols PD3.0 / PD2.0 / QC 3.0 / QC 2.0 / FCP / PE2.0 / BC1.2. However when I plug it in to the type C port, I get an error that the power delivery of the charger is insufficient for the laptop (It was only consuming 8W at the time). This is silly since techically this charger is more powerful than the previous one I had. The battery indicator also showed that neither battery was being charged. The charger is listed for PD delivery at: 5V/3A, 7V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A, 15V/3A, 20.3V/3AWhat is going wrong in this setup? Is there somewhere I can enable type-C charging? I can't even find a way to know what power level the charger negotiated with the laptop. Does the T470 follow a particular protocol or is it proprietary?

Hi all really hoping someone has some insight on my issue im pretty desperate to keep this machine going for a long time!! So as the subject describes, my battery is plugged in but won't charge. I have seen many posts talking about a "Plugged in but not charging" message, I do not have this.  I have tried various troubleshooting methods, I have checked for updates, drivers, etc. I have also tried the power reset turing it off removing the external battery and holding the power button for 30 seconds. Wish I had more information but like I said I am desperate for any insights or suggestions! Thanks in advance

Hey. Taken my T470 abroad and it stopped charging on me. And after running out of charge won't boot, even with the batteries removed and the cable left in.  Got a new charging cable as I thought the AC DC converter might have taken a few too many hits. But no luck still. I checked with a Multimeter and power is getting through the charging port so that isn't dead either. Its scared me that maybe the charging circuit on the mobo is dead instead. Any ideas on some more. Ideas I could use to figure this out? And if there is a warrenty/repair scheme at all if the mobo is dead? Its a fairly new laptop!

My Lenovo T470 Laptop is one month old. Yesterday, I was traveling and plugged it into a wall adapter on a train. I used the charger that was shipped with the laptop. I was given an error message stating that this power adapter was not powerful enough, and to please use the charger that was shipped with the laptop. Now, any time I plug in, I am told that I am plugged in but not charging. When I returned from traveling, I connected the laptop to my dock, which charged at first, but now won't charge. I've updated the system, installed Lenovo Vantage, restarted several times, and tried it in a variety of outlets.  Anyone have any input?

A:Lenovo T470 Plugged In Not Charging

Hi,

I know you have a T470 BUT please check the below article.  I also know you were on a train.  However if you turned on "airplane" mode or the system "auto" detected airplane mode the system may not provide enough power to charge laptop and power dock.  So check in Vantage if you have airplane mode on.

https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/W540-Cannot-charge-when-WiFi-is-turned-o...

Also check this 2nd post.  I know it talks about P70.  In addition it mentions Lenovo Settings.  The settings on the T470 are in Lenovo Vantage.

My T470 has been behaving oddly as of late, as of now it's around 70% and says it's "plugged in, charging" despite the charger not being plugged in. The battery is decreasing consistently with use, so that aspect of the gauge seems accurate. Plugging the charger in doesn't change anything, but removing it causes the hard drive light at the power button to flash three times with no other changes. I've had this happen once in the past week, my computer is completely updated, I tried restarting it, I tried different chargers. Lenovo Vantage says both my primary and secondary battery are in good condition, but as of now it thinks the secondary battery is charging with no activity in the primary battery despite being unplugged and losing charge with use. The last time I had this issue I ended up removing the secondary battery, opening the case and disconnecting the primary battery, testing that the computer can run with only a charger and no batteries (it can), and then re-connected the primary battery and secondary battery which seemed to fix the issue until today. Any advice or explanation would be greatly appreciated, I'm at a loss at what is causing this issue and not sure what to do to fully resolve this problem.

I have 100+ T460 and T470 laptops deployed with the same image, Win 10 64bit Enterprise, and there are multiple (10 -20) that are getting the plugged in - not charging message when using the wall charger. If the laptop is placed on a docking station it will immeaditly begin charging correctly. The only workaround I have found is to remove the battery for an extended period of time. I have tried  updating the BIOS, power management driver, adjusting the power settings and even removing all power management software. Nothing seems to work except removing the battery for an extended period of time. Any ideas would be appreciated. Thanks

If the T470 laptop is in shut down mode while the battery is charging, how are you made aware when it has been fully charged? The green led it is not turning off, nothing is happening. You have to start the system to see if you reached the fully charging of the batteries? Thanks.

A:How do you know when it is 100% charged a T470 if you are charging in shut down mode?

Per user guide.  Its normal for it be green.  If its 80% to 100% charged it will stay green.  Unfortunately above 80% it will be green too.  In that case you would need to turn on to confirm what the exact level is.

Hi all, new to the forum. After browsing a bunch of similar posts with the same issue, I couldn't find one with my situation, and I'm hoping to get some insight before I do anything else. I bought this computer about late April of last year and haven't had any major hardware problems until now. Towards the end of last month I encountered a problem with my battery on my Lenovo T470. It ran out of battery and was in the power saving mode then I plugged it in, it lit up a little bit as usual but then went back to not charging (Windows 10 alert 3% left or whatever the lowest percentage alert was). Didn't think of much, next day, I thought it charged for the night, didn't. Couldn't start it up because it didn't charge, so I had to use an outlet to run the computer, then I get the battery gauge with no charging animation and a Lenovo alert for battery plugged in but not charging. I tried doing those reset techniques advised on other forums (taking battery out, holding power buttons, etc etc). No luck. I read about bad battery life spans and with getting a new one I can at least eliminate it being a battery problem. I went ahead and bought a new battery that came today. Put it in, still computer plugged in, not charging. I checked forums about power management and my settings are not in airplane mode. I tried uninstalling the ACPI compliant control method battery as another technique I saw on the forums, but that led to no success either. Since it is not a battery problem ... Read more

Hello Everyone, I have recently left my laptop in a car for about 8 hours, when it got to about -30C.I can only turn it on now while plugged in. Lenovo Vantage shows both batteriy condition as poor, with 0Wh remaining capacity. As a result, I cannot use the laptop without a charger, and it powers off after charger is disconnected. I have tried disconnecting them for a few hours, using different chargers, and now trying to use a Battery Gouge Reset which seems to be stuck at 0%. Ironically my warranty expired 20 days ago, so I cannot call it in. I am considering purchasing a new extended battery to compensate for both, but I am worried it will not solve the issue. Any recommendation from Lenovo and the community would be much appreciated. Alex

I am a running a hp2000 laptop, that when I hit the power button all I get is the led to come on. I don't hear the hard drive or the fan coming on and after about 30 seconds the led shuts off. I have reseated the ram and the hard drive, and tested them in other computers. I checked the power cord and the battery in another laptop and with a multimeter and both tested OK. A couple days ago I got a message at startup that there was some problem with the CPU fan, so I blew the dust out and it seemed to be running good. I am not sure where to start troubleshooting or what I can do to fix the problem. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

Hi,

How can I tell if my power supply has failed??

my computer has been running fine for over 3 years..it's been on 24hrs for days at a time, but never for more than 1 week.

Just last night I tried to turn it on, but nothing, no sounds, no lights, no fans starting up...nothing at all

I checked the connections, tried different wall sockets, but nothing.

My guess is that it is the power supply...but since I have never had this situation before, I do not know what really may be the problem.

Make: Turbolink Switching Power Supply
Model: CWT-320ATX - 12V(320W MAX)

could it be something else other than the power supply???

I hit the power button and it shut off (I didn't hold the power button, just clicked it) and now it won't turn on at all. The breakers aren't tripped, the cords are all connected tight, I tried unplugging the power supply and holding the powe button, I don't know what else to do. Hi DC, welcome to the TSG Forums.....

You need to determine what is really important. If the personal files on your PC are really important to you and you do not have current backups then STOP doing anything before you Copy those files to another drive.

As you are not technical you may need a techy-friend to help you. If you don't have a techy-friend and if you want to proceed then Post a reply back to this Forum and I will give you a step-by-step guide as to what you need to do.

Hello all,

I have a very unexpected issue that has came up on me..

I went and plugged in my external DVD drive into my usb on my PC and it did not work, so I restarted my PC. I restarted my PC and it turned off and on repeatedly. I've had this issue before on other computers, so I changed the power supply. The PC turned on just fine, but there was no display on the monitor and my keyboard did not light up.

Things I've done with no success whatsoever

-reseated cmos battery
-swapped power supply at least 4 times
-reseated ram
-unplug all usb
-unplug hard drive
-unplug graphics card

I am out of ideas at this point and am stunned because usually these should work. I am afraid my MOBO might be dead.. but I do not see how it can be from simply plugging in my usb external dvd drive.

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Hi Guys, I have had to change my battery, got a brand new DELL battery but I can't get it to charge...I'm running Windows 10 PRO. I have tried the fixes listed above but unfortunately NONE has solved my problem. Any suggestions?

A:XPS 12 9Q23 Power Charging Disabled / Plugged in, NOT CHARGING

Hi DAEMONROD.
Where have you purchased the battery from? Does the old battery charge fine when plugged in?
Are you using an original Dell OEM Adapter? When you plug in the adapter to the system, does the adapter stay firm or does it fall off easily? Is the adapter frayed? Is there any damage on the system? Could you test with another power adapter if possible?
Restart the system and press f2 key to enter BIOS - check the adapter status in BIOS with and without the adapter plugged in. Also, wiggle the adapter cable at the end and see if the status changes in BIOS at any point. Check the battery health in BIOS (if applicable).
Restart the system and press f12 key on startup - choose diagnostics. Let it run the diags and if you encounter any errors - make a note of the complete error and report the same to us. These are onboard diagnostics and they might possible pick some error if the hardware is not functional.
Test another power adapter and check. If the adapter fits in loose, then the dc port needs to be replaced. You would need this part.
Also, please click my DELL-username and write me a private message with the service tag and your Name for case records.
Let us know if you have any other queries.

I bought a Lenovo T470 a couple years back with Win 10 for school and its been working great with absolutley no problems. Then last night i get home from work and go on to do school work and a message pops up saying battery not charging. It has the icon showing it recognizes that the charger is plugged in. Also the light on the lenovo logo is blinking 3 times red and repeating. When i unplug the charger it stops blinking. So I thought it was the charger, got out my multimeter and check it and it reads normal on both sides of the charger. Then I thought i needed a new battery but it wont even stay powered on with the power cord plugged in. So now it is dead and even with the charger plugged in will not turn on. Not even the power button light will illuminate. This laptop has been great to me and this happened out of the blue im hoping there is a way to fix this problem. And I also tried taking battery, unplugging it, hold power button for a reset. Nothing changed. Anybody have any ideas?

Received a new T470 a couple of weeks ago, but having issues when running off battery (internal + 3 cell): 1. Power Bridge failure: sometimes if I unplug machine and run off batteries, then remove the external battery, the machine shuts off immediately rather than switching to the internal battery. This occurs 1/2 or 1/3 of the time. 2. When booting machine (if machine is unplugged, running on battery): sometimes it hangs indefinitely at Lenovo splash screen (i.e. with endlessly spinning icon). Only way out is to reset machine by punching reset button on the back. (Note: #2 occurs always after #1 occurs, and 1/2 or 1/3 of the time on a regular reboot). 3. However: boot hang never occurs if booting while machine is plugged in OR if external battery is removed (i.e. running with the internal battery only). Boot hang only occurs if booting off batteries and external battery is installed. I called Tech Support, they sent a new internal battery, but that makes no difference. They also said it might be a faulty system board, but I ran full Lenovo HW diagnostics and all tests passed successfully including mother board test. Also tried a complete factory reset (Windows 10 x64), loaded all latest updates & drivers incl. latet BIOS (1.30), which I reset to default values (F9). Problem still persists. Anybody else experiencing these issues?

The light on the AC Adapter itself remain solid green. In both cases pressing or pressing and holding the power button has no effect. There is no indication that power is actually making in to the MB; no BIOS , nothing at all. I do not have access to another unit with the same battery or AC adapter in order to try swapping those out. Thanks,Shane

A:Recommended power adapter/charger for Lenovo Thinkpad T470

I would buy the USB-C, thinking if or when I replace the laptop, the USB-C charger is more likely to work as a spare.  As far as wattage, the 45W will be lighter, but 65W may charge some devices faster and is more likely to be compatible with any replacement.  (I am not suggesting that you are going to replace the laptop soon, but things happen and situations change.)

3.  In Config -> Power menu, select the item about Disable Built-in Battery (read the help text if you want to know what it does)
4.  The system will automatically turn off

The USB port with power off charging capability has stopped working. It works fine when laptop is turned on. But it does not charge my other devices when laptop is turned off. I contacted support several times but they could not solve this problem. following are things I tried. 1.  In DEVICE MANAGER: Unchecking- "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power" 2. Refreshing the system wihtout affecting PC files.3. Resetting BIOS4. Updating BIOS Please tell me how can I get my USB port working again.Model Name: Acer Aspire V3_572G-54L9.

A:USB 3.0 with power off charging

Hi,I Dont Find any computer could do it, When the unit is off there is no power supply to the mainboard, if that is the case how do you expect the USB to have power to get your other devcies to charge, may be you could have the System in Sleep to charge the other devices.

I?ve had this computer  for about two years now, and it has never given me any trouble, but yesterday it had low battery, so I connected to the charger and it began to charge and disconnect intermittently,  until it stoped charging at all and shown the message  ? connected but not charging ?.  I started searching for solutions, I?ve tried removing the battery, hold the power button for about 30 seconds, return battery to the computer and connecting the charger to the computer Again, but it still wouldn?t charge.  I?ve turned the computer back on and try the method  updating the battery software and I also tried uninstalling it, Then restarted the computer again and it still wouldn?t charge, it now had 10% battery, I?ve also tried the Lenovo app but it didn?t work either,   The computer got to 0% battery, it was still connected, but didn?t turn off right away.  Then it turn off and I couldn?t turn it on that again.  If I connect the computer to the charger it turns on a blinking light that I know it means low battery,  but the computer doesn?t turn on. If I take the battery off and try to turn the computer back on with only the charger, it doesn?t even turn the blinking light on.   I don?t know what else to do or try to make it turn on, I don?t know if the problem is the charger, the battery or what. I need help please

Hoping this problem will be noticed by more people, the original post on this issue came from:https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Linux-Discussion/T470-Linux-Power-Bridge-wrong-discharge-order/td-p/365...https://www.reddit.com/r/thinkpad/comments/63odjr/t470_battery_order_question_internal_discharges/ Brief description: same problem with OS including Win 10, Ubuntu 16.04, Gentoo etc. The internal battery always gets discharged first regardless its remaining power, which is generally harmless but seems not so good for the internal battery life. With my own T470 machine, updated with the latest 1.29 BIOS, this problem remains. According to searching results online, this little bug came with early versions of X's and T' including T460. PS: this issue had been successfully fixed with T460 via BIOS update 1.26, hoping it would be fixed with T470 sooner or later. Best regards.
