Forcing IE browser to open maximized

Q: Forcing IE browser to open maximized

On a new Windows XP (SP2) PC when I click on a web page link it opens an IE6 box full length but only about half as wide as the screen. How can I force IE6 sessions to open full screen? Thanks.

Preferred Solution: Forcing IE browser to open maximized

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I don't know why, but for the past week, whenever I open my IE browser, the page always comes up in reduced size(smaller than filling the whole screen, as I want it to).

I think I heard somewhere that dragging the window edges to fit the whole screen...and then closing the window by using File/Close menu(instead of "Xing it" out) would make the screens start opening full size again.

But after doing that for days now, I can tell it isn't solving this at all.

How do I tell my browser to Always open all webpages in full screen?
(this is happening on both my XP computer at home, and my W2K computer at work)

I have a Hewlett Packard Vectra desktop pc
Pentium 3, 930 Mhz, 128MB ram
Windows XP home edition upgrade
This is a very strange problem, it may have to do with my registry.
After running a registry scan and fixing errors, I noticed that all
my software programs that display any kind of html, such as
Outlook Express, my html editor, my keyword research tool, and
my webpage design software, will no longer display, but instead,
a windows screen pops up prompting me to either open the file
in my browser or save it, thus, rendering my software programs
useless. I have no idea how to fix this and I don't have the technical
knowledge for this type of problem. If need be, I will reformat
the hard drive and just start over, but would rather fix the problem.
I scanned the registry twice (mistake), so I don't think I can go back to the way it was.

Any ideas? Thanks.

I have a problem when I open the Internet to a shortcut. (That is in a folder on my desktop)

It has worked before in all versions of Explorer.

It will not open maximized. It is only a problem from a "shortcut".

I have seen this issue discussed on different forums but no one has seemed to come up with a real fix as most people say "I tried that and it didn't work".

The really odd thing is that if I open explorer from my desktop and use "favorites" it works perfectly.

I would really love to fine a real answer to this annoying problem.

BTW...I have downloaded IE maximizer and it does work but is still annoying.

I have read all of the possible solutions to open ie8 pages maximzed instead of just a small (about 4 lines) page. I tried them all but none of them works. I changed to ie8 properties option to "maximize" but still no maximize. Does anyone know what needs to be done to open ie8 pages maximized? I know other browers do this but I am asking about ie8.

A:open ie8 maximized

I know what you mean. This is a shortcomming to IE. This is how I handle it. Make sure properties is set to max. When you open a window that is less than max, stretch it out so it fulls the screen. If you do get a window that forgets it will almost be like full size. Then max it. Do this every time you are in a new screen, be careful not to forget, if you click on a link and a new window opens. Do this every time. When you exit dont hit the right hand x, go to file and click exit. I think the most important step is to make sure that explorer propertis is properly set, ie the biggest, size for windows. It seems to take time, but my machine seems to always open full size now.

PS Once in a while it forgets, but basically all are full size windows.

this is my 1st post here but i've seached for my answer in the forums and still haven't found what im looking for. maybe you can help me.

my problem is that i use IE 6.X and i would like to "force" IE to open only in a maximized window. Now, whenever i initially open IE it is always maximized and thats great. my problem pertains to IE's child windows and certain hyperlinks that open a new browser windows; for example - a link inside an outlook express email message.

in the tools>internet options...>advanced tab there is a checkbox that states "Launch browser in full screen window" and i have 'check off' the box but whenever i close and re-open IE, the setting reverts back to its un-checked state! this is driving me nuts because i prefer to use a maximized window 99.9% of the time i browse the web.

the next thing i tried was opening IE, then a child window - closing the initial window. at that point i resized the child window to the prefered size and control+clicked the close button in the corner to 'remember' my window size and it won't quite stay maximized. as a note, this trick is great for all windows applications you'd like to open the size/placement you like.

does anyone know a good registry hack to do this?

I've moved you to Web and Email for more response

Try this:

1.Close all instances of Internet Explorer
2.Start the Registry Editor (start--run--regedit)
3.Go to HKEY_CURRENT_USER \ Software \ Microsoft \ Internet Explorer \ Main
4.Delete the value Window_Placement
5.Exit the Registry Editor

You may want to backup the Registry before, just in case:

Whenever Firefox 8 opens, it opens in minimized mode (ie, just about covers the whole monitor screen, but not quite...hovering over single square in upper right gives a tooltip of "Maximize". I'd like it to open in maximized mode (in upper right should show double square and "Restore Down" tooltip)--how? Within the icon's shortcut on the desktop, properties>run>normal or maximize makes no difference, FF still opens minimized.

EDIT: BTW, the same thing is also happening on my laptop which is configured exactly the same as this desktop. Different computer manufacturers, but same OS and same configs for FF8.

If you tried maximizing it with the buttons at the top and and want sitck try this:

Open a window, grab hold of the top window bar with the mouse, and drag the window to the top left of the screen. Let go with the mouse, and move mouse to the lower right corner of the window, when the mouse cursor changes to a double arrow, click and drag the window to the lower right-hand corner of your screen. Depress the Ctrl key and close the window by clicking on the X in the upper right-hand side of the window. The windows should open this way the next time you open one.

I have about twenty-five icons on my desktop from which I can open various programs that I use regularly. What I would like to be able to do is, when clicking on them, they open maximized. However, only about six of them do this when clicked. I have read about "Properties/Shortcut/Run" and making sure that Maximized is selected, thus achieving what I intend, but the others do not allow me to choose this. Is there any way I can get around it, as it is a bit of a nuisance always having to click on the small square at the top of the page to achieve this.

(1) Selecting "maximized" in shortcut properties.

(2) Closing by pressing ctrl/shirt keys

If I drag the corners of smaller window than next time it opens with same size .......... but I want to open it maximized and not a big drag window.

I have Windows Vista Home Premium as my O/S.

I made a web page smaller so I could fit two on my 19" Sammy widescreen monitor as I needed both open to compare info.

When I was done I closed both and from then on EVERY time I open a new window in the browser it initially loads at the same size as the window on the left that I had made smaller earlier taking up only maybe 1/3rd of the width of the screen.

I have already tried to fix this in the IE 7 Properties by making sure that the Run drop down is set to "Maximize" vs "Normal".

I tried the tools icon in the tool bar and clicked on "Full Screen". That doesn't do anything but eliminate 2 of the info bars I have on top of my screen.

I searched for a solution in Windows Help & Support and in two VISTA training books I have...NO WHERE is this simple item discussed!

HOW do I set up VISTA to ALWAYS open new I'net windows at the "Maximized" size?

Now, with every new window I have to go up to the top and click in the toolbar to manually max the window. I want this to be automatic again.

Thank you in advance for any help any of you "experts" can give me!

For the initial window:

Right click on the Internet Explorer icon on your taskbar and click Properties

In the existing Internet Explorer Window

Right click on a link and click open in New Window
After you have opened the new window, close the original (and any other IE windows except the new one).
Resize the new window (drag the edges) to the largest possible size, then close that window.

I'm using the Firefox browser version 1.5 and Thunderbird email version 1.0.2 on Windows XP Pro.

For a long time, when I would click on a link in a received email, the browser would open a new tab and the browser window would be Maximized.

A month or so ago I guess I must have unknowingly changed some parameter somewhere and now when I click on a link in an email, the browser opens in a new tab as before, but most of the time the browser window opens in a Normal mode, i.e., it does not occupy the full screen. Some links do open it Maximized, most do not.

How can I return to those thrilling days of yesteryear when the email link ALWAYS opened a new tab in the MAXIMIZED browser?

I asked this question in the Mozilla support forum for both Firefox and Thunderbird, got nowhere with it.

Hey whenever my computer is running I get ad popups every minute or so, that just popup from Internet Explorer, even when I'm just at my desktop. The page is called "about:blank" and the ads are just like celebrities and clothing advertisements.

Yesterday I thought I had found the problem, in the task manager I located the file to be called "xYFL87IT.exe" and ended the process. The ads went away but then about 5 minutes later I got another pop up, and it was back and running in my task manager

I then located two files, one was "xYFL87IT.exe" which was located in my C:WINDOWS/system32 folder and the other was "XYFL87IT.EXE-23DFB174.pf" which was located in my C:WINDOWS/Prefetch folder. I deleted them both which seemed to work, but then about 5 minutes later I got an ad again and both those files were re-created in both those folders.

I ran adware, spyware, virus and windows threat removal, and all of them found my computer to be clean. I'm not sure if there are more files causing the problem, or what to do in order to get rid of them. Help?

Hello all, it's been a long while since I've posted here because thankfully I've been (mostly) problem-free for the last few years. Much thanks to those who assisted me back then.

Lately though, I've been having an issue I would describe as "consistently annoying" or "annoyingly consistent". This is a Dell laptop and every once in a while (feels like every two weeks roughly), I'll wake it from sleep mode and my Google Chrome browser will immediately close out. I will open it again and it will within 10-15 seconds close out again while trying to "restore" my session. Repeated attempts will also close down without fail, but in quicker intervals (sometimes 3-5 seconds).

This has happened three times and each time I didn't know what it was. I tried a quick scan and nothing came up. I checked my add/remove program list and didn't see anything out of the ordinary that might be a culprit. Instead, to resolve the problem I merely did ... Read more

Hello all. I was hoping someone could help me out with this problem.

I have two displays. My first is 1680x1050, my second is 1920x1080. When I run an application, it always opens on my first. For some things this is a problem -- namely applications like Team Fortress 2 or XBMC, things which run in fullscreen and determine their resolution limits at launch. I want to play Team Fortress 2 in fullscreen on my secondary display, but it just doesn't want to let me.

The ideal solution would be some way to tell Windows that I want certain apps to open on Display #2, not #1. Is there some launch option that might do this, the way you can create shortcuts with "-windowed" suffixed?

A:Forcing applications to open on a second display?

Well you can tell the particular applications to open in Windowed mode and drag them to the particular display you wish to use. The Windows shortcut to move a window to the next display is Win+Shift+Right/Left

You can also change your primary display to the one which you'd like to play full screen applications on.

The more user friendly solution is to purchase or download an application which can manage dual displays a bit better than Window's native functions. Here's a list...

Realtime Soft UltraMon

As far as TF2 is concerned, you can use the launch commands "-noborder" and "-windowed". The first command will cause a windowed game not to show borders then second command simply forces the game to run in windowed mode. "-noborder" should force windowed mode.

To use these commands you can either append the commands to the end of the shortcut target line or you can add it to the launch options within the steam games window itself. Right Click Game > Properties > Launch Options

Hi to all,

I know that there are many posts in the web on how to maximized a certain program when you open it. The solution is to open in in a "maximzed" window in its properties tab, and this is only possible on the program's shortcut.

What I am asking is how to open text files in a maximized setting. My text (.txt) files opens with Notepad and when I open it, it is opened in a small window. I think its a waste of time clicking the maximized button every time I open a text file. I don't want to set properties on the shortcuts on my text files, because I have hundreds of text files and it would be dumb to one by one set each window to open in a maximized window.

Does anyone here know a solution? From what I have heard, does it involve a registry setting tweak?

Many thanks!

Don't know about maximizing, but Notepad should open with the same size as it last closed, so just size the window to fill the screen.

Hello everybody.

I have recently installed Windows 7 32bit on my Core2Duo 8200, XFX 9600GT 512mb, Asus P5N-E, 4GB ram deck. Starting about 2 weeks ago, I've been stuck with the following issue :

Every time I boot and open windows explorer/my computer, it opens it in 1/2 size or so. I'm unable to get it to always open maximized and that is driving me crazy. The thing is - I feel the problem is affected by another program. For instance, I open windows explorer, maximize it by clicking the appropriate icon, work in a folder and then close it. If I open it again right away, it's maximized. If I let some time pass, use other programs, next time I open it - it's back to 1/2 size in about 90% of the cases, and opens maximized again in the other 10%. It might actually have something to do with running different programs in between the times I run the explorer/my computer windows. As if some of them tend to change my window size. :S That's kinda weird, since I only use the browser, MS office, a DC client my ISP supplies, Winamp, Adobe reader and a few games. Everything else starts maximized.

I have scanned my PC from safe mode with Spybot and Malwarebytes, and also Avast - all with the latest known spyware/virus bases. Everything was clean. Also, since I'm new to Win7, it might be that I'm just a noob who's unable to find a properties setting regarding folder size and appearance...

My browser, Firefox, opens maximized every time.
