MS Outlook 2003/ Outlook Express problems

Q: MS Outlook 2003/ Outlook Express problems

Good day;
I have followed all directions in the "read this first" post. I pretty much do that every week or so anyhow.
Anyway, the problem. Recently on MS Outlook, when I check my mail, I find I have 10-20 messages in there from either, Postmaster Hotmail, Mail delivery Service, Mail Delivery System or Mail Administrator with a Subject line saying either "Mail System Error-Returned mail or Delivery Status Notification or Undelivered Mail-Return to Sender and a few others. The text of the message is along these lines:
This Message was undeliverable due to the following reason:

The user(s) account is temporarily over quota.

<[email protected]>
<[email protected]>

Please reply to <[email protected]>
if you feel this message to be in error
I have no idea who these people are.
I am religous in running my updated AdawareSE, Spybot S&D, SpywareBlaster and also have EZ Anti-virus which is updated and has recently picked up a lot of incoming viruses via emails. I dont open any emails from Addees I do not know. I have run online AV scans and have not found anything. I also have Kerio Personal Firewall.
I am totally up to date with all WinXPSP2 updates as well as MS Office 2003 updates
Any idea why I am getting all this garbage.
Here is a copy of my hijack this log:

Preferred Solution: MS Outlook 2003/ Outlook Express problems

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I just launched my email and I've lost everything. It looks like a whole new program has launched (Outlook Express 6), whereas I used to have Outlook 2003. The only thing I can think of is I needed to find my email password to set up email on my mobile, so I went to Start/Programs, but all I could find was Outlook Express 6. Perhaps an automatic update has taken place. Anyway, I went to Tools/Accounts/double clicked on my username/Servers, but the password was blanked out. I therefore killed the program, but when I hit the email button on my keyboard to launch Outlook 2003, Outlook Express 6 launched, which has no emails at all.

The only thing I can think that has changed since yesterday is my Norton 360 Antivirus software expired today and I intend buying an update tomorrow. Perhaps there's a connection? What do you think happened, are my old emails stored somewhere, and how can I restore Outlook 2003?

A:Solved: Outlook 2003 Suddenly Replaced by Outlook Express 6

When you launched Outlook express do you remember that box that came up and said something along the lines of:

"outlook express is currently not your default mail application, do you want it to be?"
and you clicked yes without reading it properly...?

Well it has done exactly that. You have two email apps on your computer, one of them has to be default. when you did that you changed it to outlook express. Luckily for you it is easy to fix.

All you need to do is go into the Start menu and find Outlook 2003 and run it. It will prob be under All programs > Microsoft Office> Outlook. Run it and then you will get the same prompt as you did for outlook express about making it the default app, choose yes to this. This will now make Outlook 2003 your default email app again and fix your problem.
Let us know if this works.

I'm a Hotmail Plus (is that the right term?) user so I'm paying for expanded service. It's been fine for nearly a year now, but recently, my connection has been shaky - sometimes connecting, sometimes not.

Now, I can't connect at all and I get the following errors:

Task 'Hotmail: Folder:Inbox Synchronizing headers.' reported error (0x800CCC0D) : 'The server could not be found.'

Task 'Hotmail: Folder:Inbox Synchronizing headers.' reported error (0x800CCC19) : 'A timeout occurred while communicating with the server.'

I did some trial and error work and realized that the problem is with the URL I'm using:

This address must be incorrect because when I put in "http://www.hotmail.com" instead, it allowed me to get through but only once. That means that the issue is not with my Outlook.

Is there another address and is anyone else having issues with the above address?

What else could be wrong?

A:Hotmail and Outlook 2003 (Small Bus. Edition) - NOT Outlook Express

This thread looks pretty old but nobody responded so....Hotmail to Outlook 2003 or above now has a "connector" that you need to download in order for Hotmail and Outlook to sync correctly. Here's the download location for Office Outlook Connector: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...B1-DF0A-46E1-AA93-7D4870871ECF&displaylang=en

Folks I have read the MS tech notes on how to get Outlook 2003 [I have it via Office 2003 Professional, full install] to import from OE6. It fails under either option: import from "another program" or "Import Internet Mail....". Under the former it is pointed to the correct folder, but fails with Error: Cannot open,.. another program in use" but there's not... I tried copying the folder to a nice clean location on the C: and checked all the properties, nothing interfering, still won't open the folder.
Under the latter option it just doesn't do anything after directing it to the correct folder. Seems to accept the command, closes the window, but does not import anything. No error messages.

Umm.... do MS teams communicate with one another??

Closely related: If I could just get the FOLDERS I had setup it would be a great asset, or if i could just get the ADDRESS book it would help. Do you know how to import *.dbx folders into Outlook 2003? Or the old outlook Express address Book?

A:Outlook 2003 Will Not Import Outlook Express folders, mail, anything

They are written in two different formats that are uncompatible. The Oulook Express has a file sytem totally unique to it.

I had the same problem about 6 weeks ago going from XP to Win7.
I had to transfer address book to notepad and put it into Outlook one at a time. The old mail sits in the old PC.
I have heard you can transfer the OE mail files over to Windows mail or gmail etc. Then transfer files from the new mail server to Outlook.
File system is changed over with the mail transfer- I haven't tried it though.

I did a Google and found this. I didn't find this page six weeks ago.

I am stuck....

We got one of the girls a new computer here in our office that had Outlook Express 6.

Her new machine has the full MS Office package with full Outlook.

I tried to use the import / export function to move emails and contacts etc. through our network to the new computer but, no luck. I keep getting error messages saying I don't have permission go into the Program Files directory on the old computer to transfer the data even though I set that dir up for sharing.

Does anyone have any ideas on how I can do this?

Many thanks,

I carefully followed all the steps for converting from OE 6 to Outlook 2003. I have just only one email account, so I have one password. After all the neccesary steps were followed to convert to Outlook, I used that same password and saved that for Outlook. (Outlook came pre-installed on the desktop with Microsoft Office 2003).

Now, I have OE 6 and Outlook 2003 both running at the same time. OE6 can receive email as well as Outlook. And they can both send email. I don't understand how to disable OE6 because I don't want to use it any longer.

What do I need to do to have only Outlook 2003 running as my email account?

I have the same problem in both applications (outlook XP/2003 beta).
I have two E-mail accounts.

1. is an exchange account (current set as default)
2. a private email account
when I send internal mails (in the office) outlook use the exchange server...as I set (that is OK!).
but when I will send an external email (for example to [email protected] )
Outlook use also the exchange server to send the email and I get an error message.
The only possibility to send external mails is for me to set the email account by hand for every
outgoing mail.

The proble doesn't exist with outlook 2000.
Outlook 2000 automatically use the second email account when it see that the mail must
be send to an extrenal account.

How can I set Outlook XP / Outlook 2003 beta to do the same as Outlook 2000?

A:migrating from outlook express to outlook 2003

Start Outlook Express. Click File\Export\Messages. You should get a prompt saying this will export the messages to Outlook. Click OK and follow the prompts. To export your address book click File\Export\Address Book. Export to a Comma Seperated Values file. To get the addresses into Outlook simply import the .csv file.

I have been using Outlook Express as my mail program. I get my mail from at&t Yahoo dsl web mail which stores the mail on the web mail server. I chose to leave a copy of the message on the server with outlook express. I've got an inbox folder in personal folders and favorite folders in Outlook 2003. Now when I wanted to use Outlook 2003 instead of Outlook express, it started to download all my messages, over 7,000 (270 MB)from the at&t yahoo dsl web mail server. I think it completed this once and the email showed up in the proper column in Outlook 2003. But the messages show up in blue letters next to the inbox as if they are unread but they do not show up the second time in the received email column as unread even though Outlook 2003 is downloading them again. I don't think I set outlook 2003 as my default mail program. I need to do that but don't know how.

I want to be able to export the mail from Outlook 2003 into some files that I can access easily later if I need to, such as importing them back into outlook 2003; but I don't want 7,000 emails exported that I have to open one at a time to know what they are such as I think is the case if you export your outlook express emails. I heard OE uses .dbx files which are not as friendly to retrieve as Outlook 2003 files which I think are .pst. But I don't know much about it or why I am having trouble with Outlook 2003.

So what should I do to get a stable Outlook 2003 which doesn't re-downlo... Read more

A:outlook office 2003, want outlook express

outlook express should come with windows (i think its part of IE) so you should have outlook express on the PC

I'm surprised you have MSoffice on the PC, a very expensive product suite

have a look in program files and see if you have a folder called outlook express in there should be a file named msimn.exe

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe"

I would expect the program to be on the program list somewhere anyway

can't seem to make office outlook 2003 my default mailbox over outlook express 6 .tried everything I could without success.
any suggestions out there? thanks.planning to delete oe6 altogether eventually .

A:outlook express 6/office outlook 2003

OE6 is an integral part of IE6.
If you are running XP, I would not advise deleting OE6, just ignoring it.

When you say you want Outlook 2003 to be your "default mailbox" I get confused. Do you mean your default email client perhaps? Your "mailbox" would be provided by your ISP, at their POP3 server.

To change the default, try setting Outlook as the default under IE6 (Tools - Internet Options - Programs)

Hi kevb8ll

In Outlook 2003:
File > Import and Export > Export to a file > Contacts > Comma Separated Values
Save the .csv file to your Desktop.

Open Outlook Express and Import the .csv file into the Address Book:
File > Import > Other Address Book
Browse to the .csv file on your Desktop.

I am getting rid of Outlook Express and installing Outlook 2003 --

However, I need to save all of my current messages in my Express program and import them into my Outlook 2003 program.

Do I need to go ahead and install Outlook 2003 first before attempting this? Because when I open Express and try to do an Export it gives me a MAPI error: "The export could not be performed. An error occured while initializing MAPI."

How would I go about this transition correctly, without losing any information?

Keep OE closed install Outlook 2003 it will ask if you want to import your OE folders (when you open it the first time), anything else can be manually imported from Outlook

Hi.I posted this already but turns out when I looked down the list of forums I totally missed that there was one for internet and email, so posted it in the wrong one. Apologies for that, and hopefully someone here might be able to help. I recently had to get a new PC because my old one died a slow and painful death. My old PC ran XP, and I did manage to copy all my files off before the final curtain fell.My new PC runs Vista.I have a folder full of .dbx files from Outlook Express 6 (including the apparently-important 'folders.dbx'). I'm trying to import these files into Outlook 2003, which I've installed along with Office on my new machine (I tried windows mail and windows live mail but don't like the programs). I've followed instructions, but the program is getting to a point where I have to tell it where my files are stored, and then when I do it errors and tells me that it can't import because the location doesn't exist or the files are in use. The files are on my harddrive and are definitely NOT in use.Can anyone help me fix this please? It seems to be a known error but all the 'help' things I've found are assuming that the reason you're trying to import is because you've upgraded from OE to Outlook, and still have OE somewhere. I don't, I just have the files. Thanks

You won't be able to go back to 2000 (although you could go back to XP, since the files are the same). Outlook and Outlook Express are two unrelated programs. Outlook is part of the Microsoft Office System. Outlook Express is part of Internet Explorer. Microsoft make the naming mistake that they corrected with Vista. It's now called Windows Mail.

I am trying to move all of my address over to Outlook 2003 from Outlook Express

The main addresses have been move to my server as csv and was able to put them on the new machines.

Done export > Address book >CSV >export

The problem is that I can not get the group address to be exported which is the Pro Mailings list

This is the setup of the address book

shared contacts ths is a folder icon

Main this is a folder icon
Pro Contact this is a folder icon

Pro Mailings this is a group icon
The Pro mailing is the data I can not get to move over

Hope this makes sense to someone

A:Outlook Express to Outlook 2003

I do not believe personal distribution lists will export. You may just have to recreate them once you import all of the contacts. Why would you want to move from a fairly decent and office oriented mail client to a flimsy tool like OE? Just curious.

Hi All

I am beginning to think this is impossible but........I have spent the last 10 days or so getting really fed up with W8. My lovely old XP is dying so I thought I would upgrade (big mistake). However I have managed to get around all the problems it has thrown at me. I was just tidying up the homescreen when I espied an Outlook icon. I installed Office 2003 on the W8 PC (I really only need Excel, Word and Powerpoint and that version is good enough). The only problem I have now with W8 is that it will not work with a POP email account (I know, I know) but there is a work around that I managed to do using a GMail account, and that is okay I guess.

However as Excel etc seem to work fine, I wondered whether I could run Outlook on the new PC even though it is running W8? I got quite far, I set up the account okay but when I tried to import my old emails it told me it could not open the folder. I am wondering if this is because it searches for a file location that does not exist (at least that is what I found in the guts of Outlook) but equally I could have made a schoolboy error and it will work it is just I am doing something wrong.

Would be grateful for any help, but don't point me to the MS solution because I have tried that and it does not work. Perhaps it is not compatible but it seems odd that Excel and Word etc work okay.

A:Outlook Express 2003 (XP) to Outlook 2003 (W8)? - Help!

Hi there
try this - it DOES work so I'm not sure why you are having problems - but follow the instructions EXACTLY.

Outlook Express to Outlook 2007/Windows 7 - Microsoft Community

If you have any problems post again - I've got OE on a Windows 2003 server Virtual machine with Office installed so I'll have a test with 2 or 3 emails to check the procedure.

(You can backup your Outlook 2003/2010/2007) files with pfbkup.exe outlook backup program from the ms site so save your existing outlook files , delete etc and then do exactly what the ms post says --you can then re-import your original outlook files again by opening the backup file created).

I am trying to setup email in Outlook 2003. I imported all settings from Express into Outlook and and then click on "Test Account Settings", everything seems to work fine.

However, emails are still being delivered into Express and when I try to send an email from Outlook I get the following message.

"The operation failed. An object could not be found."

Any ideas on what I am missing?

I run XP Home and heavily use the full version of MS Outlook. I found Express an irritant and have tried to remove it before. In a quest to regain my 768 broadban speed (another issue) I'm trying to get rid of things that could conflict or tap the resources.I have 1.5 gigs of ram in my 4 year old desk top and adequate disk space. I use only 10 % running the Office Pro suite. I have a 9800 Radeon video card, Verizon for IP and run Uniblue's suite of Registry/performance enhancers and use Norton anti-virus. I turned off the Microsoft firewall so it didn't conflict with Norton's and shut off the antivirus program to download or install programs.Recently i again started receiving a dialogue box saying that Express can compress files for me. I got this message months ago and had removed what I thought was all of Express at the time. Now the message and several files are back. Those files include:msimn.exewab.exewabmig.exeoemig50.exesetup50.exeI don't know if these can be specifically removed without damaging Outlook itself or if these are unique for Express. Since wab is the "addess book" it worries me to just start deleting. The rest of the files in area are libraries and a .txt file and if they're not shared by Outlook can they be removed permanently and retain Outlook full version intact?msoe.txtwabfind.dlloemiglib.dllwabimp.dlloeimport.dllmsoe.dllmsoeres.dllI ran a patch for eliminating Express when I first attempted removal, but it seems to be reinstalling ... Dear John,

It appears as though you no longer get long with your operating system. I hate to do this, but you must break up with your computer.
Computers are intelligent in nature and don't get along well with hopeless romantics that like things their way. You should started dating
a Macbook, they're easy and always give you what you want.

Sincerely yours,

Now, on to the matter at hand, please go into add/remove programs and then click on Add/Remove Windows Components. Uncheck Outllook express.
Let the computer do it's thing. When finished, restart the computer.

If OLEXP returns, we need to use more drastic measures.

I just recently bought a new computer. It came with a trial version of Office 2003 which includes Outlook. My old computer used Outlook Express. I have been trying to import my dbx files from OE into the new O but it just won't cooperate with me. I have tried both methods recommended to me and both have failed. It appears I need to have OE installed on my new computer for either way to work. I haven't been able to download it because it won't let me download on older version of IE6. The XP service pack doesn't have it. I am unsure what do to at this point.

I tried this method: http://www.directron.com/movmail.html

And this one: http://www.outlook-express-backup.com/
To make matters worse, the OE on my old computer won't let me export using the program export function. I downloaded OE again hoping it would correct the problem. It didn't work.

Is there something I can do or do I need to delete 4 years worth of email. (Some of it is useless, but some of it is important.)

Any help would be greatly appreciately.

I have been using Outlook Express 6 which seems to be working fine. However, I wanted to switch to Outlook. When I try to install Outlook, I get a message that "Outlook Express 5 or higher needs to be installed." It is installed and working.
When I boot up the computer, I get a message that "Outlook Express has been removed and asks if I want to remove related files." I don't want to lose all of my stuff in Outlook Express, so I say "No" and the system continues with boot-up.
I am running Windows XP Pro with 2.53 GHz system and 1.00 GHz RAM. I have scanned for Adware, and Spyware and run a good antivirus program (Avast) which is kept up to date. I am also using Office XP.
Can someone please assist with this or will I have to do a complete "format" and start over.
Thanks for any assistance.

I recently did an upgrade from Win ME to WinXP Pro on my Mom's computer
Dell Dimension 8100
Not sure of specs exactly but- (sorry)
2.6Mhz P4
512MB Ram

*pretty much stock Dell components for this system*

I installed Outlook
Outlook Express

Outlook Express is their preferred "Default" Mail handler and I have set
it up to be so.

The problems are these:

When connecting (Dial up ISP) Outlook automatically receives Mail without being opened (can hear the mail received notification).

Outlook Express was set up with two Identities, but all mail is going to just one identity.
In other words ALL mail is going into one Identity's mailbox, thus mixing up the mail and not separating it.

I checked Identities again, and it appears to be set correctly, so I don't know why all mail is defaulting to the one Identity's mailbox.

I am not familiar with Outlook or Outlook Express as I don't use those programs much, but know enough to set them up.

Can't figure this one out, please help if you have any ideas, thanks.

I have just installed Word 2003 and found that I can use it as an email editor. (I use Outlook Express - not Microsoft Outlook - for sending/receiving emails.) When I want to send a Word email, I hit the address book icon and get my Outlook Express addresses - but I can't seem to access them (ie, automatically get an address into the 'send' box.) Anyone got any idea how I can do this - or whether it can be done? (As I said, I don't have Microsoft Outlook and don't particularly want to bother to get it.) Thanks!

When you click on the e-mail icon and it brings up the heading, just click on the *To* and it will open your addressbook, so that you can pick the address(es) you need. They should then be automatically inserted.

Typically when I receive spam, my isp provider marks it as such, then I discern whether it's actual spam, then add those msg's to my junk folder listing. At times I recognize the same spam frequently returning. I'm sure there's a more effective way of managing this unwanted traffic. I've never used "rules & alerts" and "auto-delete"...

Can anyone offer some simple tips?

A:Outlook 2003 (not Express) Spam Management

Hi RubyBlu

Use the Actions > Junk E-mail > Add Sender to Blocked Sender's List to mark unwanted e-mails that download into your Inbox. These are then moved to the Junk E-mail folder and Outlook 2003 will remember next time, if the spammer uses the same address again. Probability of that is low. They'll just use a different e-mail address.

Place your Junk E-mail options to High or use the Safe Sender's List option.
I also use the Tools > Organize feature in Outlook 2003 and have messages from people I know appear in color.
If a message comes in as black, then I can see right off that the message needs to organized by color or use Actions > Junk E-mail > Add Sender to Blocked Sender's List
I go through my Junk E-mail folder at least once a week to verify no messages have been inadvertently marked as Junk that should not be. Then I empty the Junk E-mail folder.

You can also download a free spam program or purchase one, you will more than likely need to train the program as to what is spam and what is not.

There are some free spam alternatives at this site: http://www.majorgeeks.com/downloads10.html
Not all the programs listed, at that link, are spam blockers, read the descriptions and check for the word: Freeware

can anyone give me a step by step description, how i can export my Emails and the Address book from Outlook Express 6 to another Computer which runs also Outlook Express 6?
I tried already to export the Address book but it only allows me to export it as a *.csv-File and after i put the data on my usb stick and try to import it on my new computer by File - Import - Addressbook, the program keeps asking me for a *.wab-File? (btw: i can only use the: "Text File (Comma Separated Values))" Option, when exporting the address book.

Export and Import from email messages doesn't work either.

Has anyone a really step-by-step description how to do this??

A:Solved: Import & Export from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook Express 6

Hi wizzle2003

When you are ready to Import the .csv file on the destination computer,
In Outlook Express,
File > Import > Other Address Book
You should then be given the option to choose a Text File (Comma Separated Values)
Then Browse to the .csv file to complete the Import.
Enable Show Hidden Files and folders:

Open My Computer,
Tools > Folder Options > View tab,
under Hidden Files and Folders, verify Show Hidden Files and Folders is selected.
Remove the check mark for Hide Extensions for known file types.
To locate the directory where Outlook Express keeps it's message store:
Tools > Options > Maintenance tab > Store Folder
Note the location, then Cancel out of the window.

Navigate to that directory, copy all the .dbx files to a folder on the Desktop.
Copy those files to a folder on the Desktop of the destination computer.
If you are using a Flash drive to transfer the files, it may take a couple of transfers to complete.

Once all the .dbx files are on the Destination computer,
Open Outlook Express,
Tools > Import > Messages > Microsoft Outlook Express 6 > Next
Select: Import mail from an OE 6 store directory
Click: OK
Browse to the folder containing the .dbx files on the Desktop.
When you reach the Finish button,
You should see a "Congratulations Your data was successfully imported"

If there is more than one Identity in Outlook Express, switch to the other Identities in Outlook Express and repeat the steps above.

A:Outlook Express 6 Problems

You need to do some reading, your habits appear to be the cause
of your problems.

1. How do I back up my Outlook Express? in this article

Also a complete website dedicated to Windows email clients

NEVER store emails for a long period of time in any of the default folders
(Inbox/Outbox/Sent Items/Deleted Items/Draft). Make custom folders.

You do not want to turn off compacting but be careful to do it properly
or it will cause problems. Don't touch your computer until it is done.
No clicking, no game playing. Manual maintenance should be done on a
regular basis. Only when you are OFFLINE. Or if you click File and
choose Work offline.

Click File->Folder. Then choose Compact All Folders. This will optimize
the DBX files. Optimizing takes out all the wasted space.

You don't mention if you use anti-virus email scanning - but if you do, at
the least disable it. It isn't needed.

I know, it is a lot of reading but you will be happier once you have that
