problem with hardrive... my computer boots up to the a: prompt doesn't read hd

Q: problem with hardrive... my computer boots up to the a: prompt doesn't read hd

I have a problem like this also. kind of.
My kids PC wouldn't boot. i replaced the HD with an old 1 i had. It booted fine, right to windows that was on the HD already. After i restarted it wouldn't boot anymore. VIRUS. ok fine. Problem now is that during to boot process it wont see the HD. If i go into the bios and leave it on Auto select for where the HD is it'll show, but it takes about 30seconds to do so. I cant boot with a start-up disk either, for some reason it wont. i changed boot sequences unpluged things nothing will work. I cant flash the bios becuase it wont read for the A drive. I cant get a A: or a C: prompt. the only thing i can get is a BOOT FAILURE ERROR.
the system is a PII 400, 13gig western digital HD, 128mb ram, Asus p3v133 motherboard. win98

I have everything set to the correct master/slave settings ( i tried a bunch of different combs of them. ) i'm lost. i've done all i can. now i need help. thx

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

First some background.

Last weekend my laptop (Lenovo U460) started overheating and crashing. It has run loud and hot since I bought it, and this model has a known issue with the video adapter that makes it crash if it is set to the highest performing mode. I realized yesterday that one of the vents on the bottom of the laptop was clogged with dust, so I used canned air to blow it out, and blew into the other intake and outlet vents, and got rid of lots of dust. It has run much quieter and cooler today, but has still crashed once, I think from overheating. I don't know if this has anything to do with the problem that cropped up today, but there it is.

Now a little more background.

A few months ago my neighbor reinstalled Windows for me. Last Friday as I was leaving work I shut down my computer and it installed a dozen or so updates.

Today something strange happened: Java ran an update, and then Windows 7 Service Pack 1 was installed, followed by about 140 updates. When I check for updates it now says it is up to date. I don't know why the Service Pack wasn't already installed, but after the service pack installed (and before the other updates installed) my computer started booting up in safe mode -- at least that's what it looks like. The resolution is much rougher, and my second monitor won't work. But I'm able to open Microsoft Office programs and use the internet and everything.

I was hoping that after all of the updates it would boot up in normal mode again... Read more

Help! My computer recently crashed on me. I was getting the Blue Screen of Death. I thought I had a bad hard drive, so I returned my hard drive to Seagate and received another one. I just tried to put it into my computer and install Windows XP SP3, but after I select to install windows and press F8 to accept their terms, I see the screen that is supposed to show the open space on any hard drives installed, (so that I can select where I would like to install Windows XP) and it says "no disc in drive"! If I press enter, I then get a blue error screen that says it can't proceed and is shutting down my system to protect it. And then I can't do anything else. What is wrong with my computer? Could it be a problem with my motherboard? I have an Asus P5LP-LE. The HP/Compaq motherboard name is Leucite-GL8E.

Hi Tech Support Guys and Gals,
I was using my Hp laptop and the screen randomly froze. I manually powered off the computer and now when I turn it on, I hear one longer beep followed by two short ones. In addition, the screen doesn't work. If I let the computer keep working and boot up, I eventually hear the welcome screen theme play so it seems like the computer keeps functioning, but the monitor won't work. Any ideas? I've been fighting this problem for months and haven't found an answer anywhere but maybe you guys can help. My computer seems to boot fine, but nothing is displayed on the monitor. The power light on the monitor ON button just blinks amber. If I wait a minute or so and then hit the reset button the computer reboots and the monitor comes on. The computer started doing this about 6 months after I built it. Once in a great while it will boot up on the first try, but it's very rare. I was thinking video card, but have unseated and reseated it a couple of times to no avail. I also got a new battery on the motherboard thinking it was having a problem. Now I'm thinking power supply or BIOS - any ideas?

2.8Ghz Intel p4
Radeon 9600 pro
ASUS p4p800 MB
1 GB of Micron ram

Thanks in advance for any help.

I'm kind of stuck here...

First what happened: last night my computer froze so I turned it off and then back on. However, when I did, the monitor just remained in standby as if the computer was not on. Everything on the computer seems to be working ok (fans going, lights on, etc). I also don't hear any beeps during the startup.

I've been browsing a lot of forums trying to figure out what is wrong, but I'm somewhat lost. I don't know that much about computers...
It seems some of these forums say the main culprits for a problem like this are the graphics card or the motherboard? Is this true?

Since every thread always has someone asking for specs - here they are:
Intel i7 940
Asus p6t intel x58 chipset sle/crossfirex mainboard triple-channel x
800w power supply
1 TB SATA II 3.0 gb 7200rpm HD
3 x 2GB DDR3 PC3 PC1333
1 x EVGA nvdia gtx 260 896mb pci-e
windows vista home premium

What I've done so far:
I have tried unplugging it and holding down the power button in the front for about 1 minute. 90% of the time this did nothing. One time it started to boot correctly with the monitor only to freeze during the windows load up bar and 1 other time it didn't even make it that far...
I have tried using another monitor on the computer. Same problem. I have also tried using my main monitor on another computer and it works fine.

I have been running this setup for almost 2 years, and nothing has been changed recently...

I would greatly appreciate help with my problem. My PC, an Acer Aspire AM5641-U5630A with Windows Vista, only starts up sometimes. When I press the power button, the blue power light comes on and the fans start sounding. However, after it quiets down there is no beeping noises and a display does not come on. On times in which the computer does turn on, a beeping noise is heard and an Acer logo display comes on before it proceeds to start up like normal. Once I'm past the Acer logo the computer works fine. It seems to be random as to when it powers up but I have tried an upwards of 20 restarts before.

A:Computer only boots up sometimes, power light on if it doesn't

This is most likely caused by a weak or failing power supply. Open up the case and make sure that the fans are running and everything is free of heavy dust and other debris...

After restoring a ghost image, Computer boots to "A Disk Read Error Occured" Press CTRL-AlT-Del to restart. It runs Windows XP, its a Lenovo Thinkpad with a SATA drive (also in AHCI):

This is what happened. I took out the 160GB SATA from the laptop, and put it in an USB enclosure and created an image in Ghost 11 that is saved to a desktop computer, then. I restored the image to a 80GB SATA drive with a USB enclosure. I pop in that 80GB drive to the laptop and that message of "A Disk Read Error Occured" shows up.

There is only one partition.

I tried the following already:
Chkdsk /r (all clean)

By the way, if I put it in an enclosure, it is accessible and does read data as normal. What can I do to fix it?
Please don't ask me to reformat, I want the laptop to use that image.

If anyone knows how to fix this problem, or even how to manually launch the external hard drive, I would be extremely greatful. If you need more info. let me know.

when i plugged it into my computer (xp) for the first time, a little box appeared in the bootom right hand corner telling me that it detected new hardware and was installing the components. a second later, it was done. i looked in itunes and there was nothing. i looked in my computer, still nothing. i right clicked my computer, went to manage and saw the the ipod accessories thing was in fact there (i do'nt really know what that is, though) ... and i still can't get anything to work.

any advice?

A:Computer Doesn't Read Cds Or Dvds Anymore

Well if it is reseting with BSOD all of the time and also now not being able to read CD's then I would say that is it likely a hardware issue. Or a driver issue. Since you have only just re-formatted and it is still happening then the later is less likely. do you have any information from the BSOD screen.

Hello everyone.

I've spent my entire Sunday scouring the net to find a solution to what happened on my laptop this morning. I opened it up, Windows resumed. I had 3 programs running from the night before (AIM, Skype, and Firefox) all of which started performing slowly and freezing. Eventually I got the BSOD and the computer restarted. I chose to Start Windows Normally and it took me into what appeared to be the Windows 7 login screen. The only thing missing was the actual login prompt. No amount of rebooting, going into Safe Mode, turning the laptop off for a while and trying again later or anything will let me access my desktop and start menu.

Here is a photo of exactly what I see on my screen. I get stopped here every time no matter what I try.

I had been letting it sit at the blank login screen behind me for a while as I searched for solutions on my PC when I turned around and noticed something called Startup Repair had begun looking for problems. I thought this was a great thing and might repair whatever was wrong. But it's going on 9 PM now and it is still "Attempting repairs. Repairing disk errors. This might take over an hour to complete." It's been over a few hours now. I'm willing to be patient and let it do what it needs to do but I'm worried maybe the Startup Repair program is actually just timed out now or something and not doing anything.

I'm not terribly concerned about losing data, although it is a bit of an inconvenience. But of course like the p... Read more

Hey everyone, I'm in dire need of some help with my PC. The computer turns on fine, and boots up (can hear the windows start up tune) but I can't see anything on the monitor. Here's the details:

I was playing a computer game on friday, and during that it crashed. I have no idea if this is when things started or not, but I restarted and it was fine.

On sunday I had another crash, only the screen flickered once or twice and there were green pixel lines going from top to bottom of the monitor , about 2 inches apart in a perfect pattern. When I restarted, there were no graphics on the monitor. The light was flashing indicating it was on power saving mode.

I took the computer apart, unplugged everything, and put it all back together, and for whatever reason it worked fine for about 6 hours.

The next day I turned the computer on, and it loaded fine, but shortly after there was the return of the green pixel lines, with the added addition of the top left corner of the screen being filled with green pixelated triangles in a perfect pattern. These were flickering furiosly.

I tried restarting my computer, and again I got no graphics posted to the monitor. However the computer booted up fine, and I heard the start up tune, and 5 minutes later I shut it down by pressing the "Power Off" button on my keyboard.

I tried another monitor and again, got nothing. I then tried taking the computer apart and putting it back together again, only this time it didn'... Read more

A:Graphics card doesn't post any graphics to my monitor, computer boots up fine

Its usually just the graphics cards, they do fail especially if they overheat - then video card fan not speeding up might have been the problem - most are dynamic and should actually speed up under load. Depending on the manufacturer of your 8800GTX you might be able to get it replaced under warranty if they have a 3 year or greater warranty.

Maybe there is a hard drive bad sector and some windows file is sitting on it. That could explain the constant retries to read that spot. A:BSOD after .dll error, desktop boots to black screen with a cmd prompt

These crashes were caused by memory corruption/exception (probably a driver).
Please run these two tests to verify your memory and find which driver is causing the problem.

* If you are overclocking anything reset to default before running these tests.
In other words STOP!!!

* If you have raid update its Driver.

*Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder or another ISO burning program. Memtest86+ - Advanced Memory Diagnostic Tool

*Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 or 6 passes.

Just remember, any time Memtest reports errors, it can be either bad RAM or a bad motherboard slot.

Test the sticks individually, and if you find a good one, test it in all slots.

Any errors are indicative of a memory problem.

If a known good stick fails in a motherboard slot it is probably the slot.

Driver verifier

Using Driver Verifier is an iffy proposition. Most times it'll crash and it'll tell you what the driver is. But sometimes it'll crash and won't tell you the driver. Other times it'll crash before you can log in to Windows. If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you'll have to resort to offline editing of the registry to disable Driver Verifier.

So, I'd suggest that you first backup your stuff and then make sure you've got access to another computer so you can contact us if problems arise. Then make a System Restore point (so you... Read more

It also makes a weird sound when I connect it for a couple of seconds and then it stops....I dunno what to do! I tried everything and nothing! Tried different cables, different computers and nothing, please anyone help!

A:Wd external hardrive help, turns on but doesn't show

"It also makes a weird sound when I connect it for a couple of seconds and then it stops"
Can you explain this in more detail?

Is this an "desktop" external drive with it's own power supply, or a "portable" external hard drive that gets its power from the PC over USB?

Whenever I start my computer, or try to, one of three things happen. 1.) Nothing happens. 2.) The computer boots up for about a second. 3.) The computer boots up, but there is no video on the monitor. (The monitor works fine). Are these signs that the power supply is broken? Do I need a larger wattage power supply? Can someone help me?

OK....after getting the recovery USB in the mail, I went about the process.Boots into recovery console, I select region, then I'm presented two options (recover everything incl. software, etc OR Recover only OS - I've tried both options) then there's a confirmation box - data will be l;ost on HDD, etc.Once I begin the process it seems to start, but after 10 seconds or so, I get "It can't read the CD-ROM. Click.....to try again or.....to exit"I've tried all of the following: Bios settings, different USB port (one 3.0, one 2.whatever), using the Lenovo button to start the recovery USB and letting it boot directly into it upon powering up - I evn thought about trying to create an actual DVD image from the USB, but the recovery USB is 11.1 GB - too large for a dvd.I'd really like to avoid paying for shipping to hace Lenovo fix this (still under warranty). Any ideas/fixes????btw - Ideapad 110 15ISK (Laptop is my son's -  a gift from his grandfather) Thanks, Leo

Hey guys,
I've got a Lenovo Think Centre with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU...64 bit Operating System...
I've got attached is a Seagate Expansion Desktop Drive 3 TB Model SRD00F2...
When I restart, the main computer doesn't want to reboot to my C drive...subsequently, I
have to manually turn off the main computer to uninstall the Seagate drive before I can
restart...or just uninstall the F drive (Seagate Expansion Drive) before I do a restart on my
main computer...
I've gone into the BIOS and changed the booting sequence...yet nada...and I can't find
anywhere how to alleviate this issue...
The reason I'm concerned about this is the safety factor...one of these days, I'm accidentally
going to pull the plug on the Seagate expansion drive and corrupt all my data...
Any ideas how to fix this little problem?

IMO...some older systems will not boot with external drives attached and in an "ON" state.

First of all let me say I have Windows XP SP2. I know SP3 is out, but last time I downloaded it for some reason my modems software wasn't compatible or something along those lines and I was told to uninstall SP3 until that issue was fixed.

I went through all of the step listed before this and since this HD is newish there wasn't anything on it that I could spot that shouldn't be here.

The other morning I turned on my computer and the internet
wasn't working. I restarted the computer, and the internet worked
for about 3 minutes, I unplugged dsl modem to reset it, restarted
computer, internet worked for 2-3 minutes again then stopped working.

I was puzzled so I tried my laptop (main computer has DSL + wireless router so laptop connects wireless) and internet ran fine on that.

I went to restart my computer again and this time when I tried to boot into windows it was a black screen. I pushed the restart button on my computer case, went into safe mode, ran AVG Free Virus scan, and no problems showed up. I tried a few more times to boot into windows normally but every time it only would show a black screen. I hit F8 while restarting to get to the menu, then I tried the "reboot into last working configuration" option and that didn't work either.

Next time during reboot I hit f8 to bring up the menu to boot into safe mode, and I saw an option (can't remember what it was off of the top of my head and I forgot to write it down). Something... Read more

Running Win 7 Home Premium 64 bit on a Lenovo Ideapad Laptop

Note: I'm not particularly tech-savvy, so I apologize if this seems incoherent to you.

Two days ago, I was trying to make my monitor display just a little less contrast, so I opened a utility called Intel HD Graphics that I found on the bottom right toolbar, and it had sliders with which I fixed the problem. But then I noticed a slider called "Hue", and by moving that quickly from side to side, my monitor went from blue to green to pink to yellow and back again, what can I say, I'm easily entertained.

Anyway, the computer froze up, and I had to rude boot it. From then on, I would start the computer, and it would look good, like it would start for real, and I would even see some icons on the desktop, but then it would freeze up and I'd have to rude boot it again. It still works in Safe Mode.

Any help?

A:Computer boots to desktop, then freezes. Maybe a Graphics problem?

In Safe Mode, open a Command Prompt, type chkdsk /r and press Enter.
You will see a message like this:

>chkdsk /r
The type of the file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another
process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be
checked the next time the system restarts? (Y/N)

Enter Y then reboot normally. Let chkdsk run to completion. This can take and hour or more.

See if that fixes the problem.

I noticed recently that cmd.exe will not automatically see files in WINDOWS/SYSTEM32 (i.e. notepad.exe, mspaint.exe) so when i type them in it says "...not recognized as an internal or external command,
operable program or batch file." the files work fine using "run..." in the start menu. I like using batch files to run some programs and run some files in system32, so I just type the file name by itself but with the command promt acting this way i would need to rewrite the files with the full file path. How can I fix this problem. Thanks

A:command prompt won't read from system32

In command prompt type path and enter.

I have a Netgear WNA1100 Wireless-N 150 USB Adapter that seems to be connected to my secured network with limited access, meaning the internet won't work whenever the computer is booted up. It mainly shows the clear bars and the gold star. Whenever I'd try using the Windows 7 Network Troubleshooter by right clicking the connection, it says that there is a problem with the driver and to try to do the repairs as an administrator. Whenever that happens, it asks if an ethernet cable is plugged in. I just tell it to skip that because that is for wired connections. It wouldn't do anything to repair it. The only way to fix this and to get it to connect is to restart the computer. This happens every time the computer boots up. If this is important, I had to do a start-up repair on April 29th since my computer didn't boot up correctly. It couldn't go through the whole repair process, but I rebooted the computer and it starts up fine. How can I repair this driver problem on bootup? Thanks.

Welcome to Seven Forums BooperGrandson.

1.Try going to this step again WITH a wired connection, let the trouble shooter do its job. See what you have on next reboot on the wireless connection.

2. If that fails go to the Netgear WNA1100 Wireless-N 150 site to check on a driver/firmware update and install if so.

3. In Device Manager, select the adapter, uninstall the driver and reboot and let Windows find/install it.

4. If you have restore points, restore the computer to a time when the adapter functioned properly.

Hope this helps.

Within the last few days my gateway laptop has started to run a little sluggish(especially the internet). I am running Vista home 32 bit. When I look at the task manager CPU usage goes up and down from 3 all the way to 100 even when I am not running any applications. Also I noticed that when I restart the computer, the cmd prompt briefly pops up and then dissapears. I recently tried to download a google chrome theme which never installed, and I don't know if this is the problem. I have run Avast and AVG which have returned no indications of a virus, but something is definitely up. Any help is appreciated.

Alright, I have two problems, first of all, I am running windows XP home. I am the only user on the computer. My first problem is that windows has made all the folders and files on my C: drive read only and it won't let me turn it off. It appears as a shaded gray box with a check in it. When i turn it off and click apply, it goes through the whole process of turning it off in all folders and subfolders, but as soon as i close out of it, it makes them all read only again. The second problem is that every folder i try to access is opened as a command prompt which is rather annoying. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. I have pasted my HiJack this log on here if you need it.
