I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I first noticed this a few days ago, when I was playing a video in VLC player. At the time I figured the audio of the .avi was either encoded badly or VLC was acting up, so I dismissed it as an anomaly. However, I started noticing it more as I watched something else later that day, on files that usually play sound and video perfectly. I still thought it was VLC player though, so I restored all the default preferences, which didn't work, and I reinstalled and fully updated it but that didn't make a difference either.

Today though, I realised the problem isn't VLC player because I noticed it while playing back a video on YouTube, and now I can hear it just playing audio through Foobar, which I couldn't before.

I've tested playing the audio through my headphones and there is no fading in and out or jumps up in volume but there is when I play through the speakers, which makes me think it's down to the speakers. I also checked all the connections, cleaned and rewired them back up. Still, no difference. I checked whether I had any stupid audio effects on that might mess things up too, but I don't, so that can be ruled out too.

Anybody have a differential diagnosis?

I suspect that my speakers are sort of dying, and they are pretty old so it's not a surprise, although it is a pain in the ****. I accidentally had the speakers so loud the output audio distorted today too, which could have made it worse and led to it becoming more not... Read more

When listening to music or videos on the onboard speakers the sound will randomly and inexplicably fade to inaudible levels over the span of a few seconds, even at full volume. The volume returns to normal after pausing or muting the audio for a few seconds and then restarting it but then fades right back down to nearly nothing. Plugging external speakers or earphones into the dual-function microphone/ speaker input/ output jack changes the settings, including the volume, to whatever they were last time something was plugged in. If the onboard speakers are faded when plugging in an external apparatus, unplugging the external apparatus returns the settings to the last set of parameters for the onboard speakers and resets the sound playing through them back to normal volume levels and keeps it from fading again for a while. I have gone through the automated HP Support Assistant troubleshooter as well as the built-in Windows 10 audio troubleshooter. Neither restarting the computer, reinstalling the Realtek Audio driver, nor a hard reset has resolved the issue. I do not experience the same issue with the generic Windows HD audio driver but the sound quality and versatility of the Realtek driver is much better so if possible I'd like to try to see if I can resolve this issue with that driver to continue to use it.

My HP Pavilion sound is weak, weak weak. Has the lattest drivers performed sound checks, the B & O app is useless can't believe HP paid to put their name on such terrible sound. If this is the best colaboration between HP and B & O then this is truly pathetic. Unless I am in a perfectly quiet room the HP notebook speakers cannot produce enough volume. Sitting on my lap the notebook is barely loud enough. I usually have to use headphones anymore, and sadly my backup $200 Dell notebook sounds better and those speakers on on bottom and the HP's on top near screen. Can't HP just produce a basic driver that produces enough volume, skip the whole B & O stuff and give me volume.

Yesterday I installed a new external hard drive - following the installation - my sound no longer played through my television (video is fine, HDMI connection) and sound now comes ONLY through the laptop speakers.

The option for HDMI Audio doesn't appear in the 'sound' menus. I have 'checked' "shoe disabled" and "show disconnected" in those menus.
Basic Specs:

Windows 7/64bit

IDT High Definition Audio Codec

ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4250
AMD M880G with ATI Mobility Radeon 4250

I have tried the following fixes gleaned from other forum posts on similar forum posts:

Uninstalling and reinstalling IDT drivers - didn't work.

HP driver 'recovery manager' to install 'original' IDT audio codecs - didn't work.

Unistalled ATI Video Drivers , and reinstalled them - didn't work

System Restore to a week ago - didn't work.

I use my HD TV as my primary monitor for gaming, so having sound through laptop speakers and not TV is quite annoying.

Perhaps my only solution is another sound card?

A:no sound through tv via hdmi, sound plays through laptop speakers (idt

So you're trying to get audio to play on your TV from your laptop? Since you said the video is fine it's obviously not the video drivers. It sounds like the sound output is configured wrong. I don't think it would be labeled as HDMI. HDMI is just DVI with HD Audio. Try altering your sound settings to see what you can get.

Audio is a very difficult thing to diagnose and fix.

I have looked for hours over the Internet for my problem but I have not found a solution. Sound plays through both the headphones and speakers when I have the headphones plugged in. I want the audio to play only through the headphones when I have them plugged in. When I check my playback devices: http://i.imgur.com/WUhT1UF.png when the headphones are plugged in or not. When I disable the device no audio comes from the laptop. It says my Realtek HD Audio is up to date http://i.imgur.com/cSDUQFv.png. I am using Windows 8.1, 64-bit. Is there anyway to get the sound to only play through the headphones when I have them plugged in.

A:Sound plays through both headphones and speakers

The Realtek HD Audio Manager, has options for either muting the speakers when a headset is plugged in or to not mute them.

Like the thread title says, I plug in my headphones and listen to them quite happily but then wait, oh no, the sound is still playing through the speakers! I've had this laptop for over a year now, upgraded to W7 when it came out; this is my first issue with it.

I've had a look at sound in control panel, which lists four options to set as default.
1) Speakers + Redirected Headphones (currently default)
2) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 1
3) Independent (R.T.C.) Headphones 2
4) Digital Output Device (SPDIF Out)

I have tried using headphones with all four of these as default. The only way I can get any sound at all is to use the first option.

The laptop has two headphone jacks in the front, as well as a front/back/side set up at the rear of the frame, for external speakers I assume.

Please help!

HP Pavilion HDX9430EA
Windows 7 64-bit

I tried putting my headphones in one of the rear ports, which has fixed the problem. However, if anyone could offer advice on how to make it work through the front headphone jack I would appreciate it, as using the rear one is a bit of an inconvenience.

I have a laptop and I was using my headphones fine for ages then one day I shut it down and when I opened it again the sound came from both speakers and the headphones. The laptop doesn't even recognise the headphones so that when I plug them in, nothing happens to the laptop, it just plays sound through both. It doesn't show up in the disables devices in sound and I have reinstalled the drivers but nothing works. I have tried this with all headphones and earphones in the house and the computer recognised none. It has been like this for a while now and nothing has changed.
I'm running windows 10.
the problem was sudden, nothing changed when it occurred.

Strange problem! I have some sounds that play through my speakers when headphones are plugged in. For example, if I run Skype, the Skype will play through the headphones (properly), but iTunes will play through speakers, as will anything else.

This also happens when playing Borderlands - I have to unplug and replug headphones to get it to go back!

What gives? How to fix this?

I have IDT HDA as my sound card. Windows forced me to install NVIDIA HDA as well, so I have 2 sound drivers - NVIDIA HDA and IDT HDA AUDIO CODEC.

Windows 8.1 64-bit
Realtek High Definition Audio
Motherboard: B85-G41 PC Mate(MS-7850)
Speakers: Logitech X-530

The set includes 4 speakers ( two front and two back), Center, and Subwoofer.

I'm not using the two back speakers.

In the RealTek Audio manager's sound test, I hear sound from the front left, front right, center, and subwoofer.

Under enhancements I have speaker fill checked.

When I play any music from YouTube, iTunes, Spotify, I'm only hearing the sound from the front left, front right and subwoofer. For some reason it will not use the center. Should I hear sound from the center?

A:Sound Test Plays All Speakers Music Won't

Another quick thing about this. When I play something from YouTube and it has an advertisement, the sound in the advertisement plays from the center speaker! Isn't that a kick in the pants! Any windows sounds, like new e-mail notification, plays from center speaker. Seems isolated to only music.

The title pretty much says it all. I realize there are other threads out there similar to this, but their solutions either didn't work for me, or the problem wasn't quite the same. My issue is as follows: When I plug my headphones into my laptop (hp dv7t 6c000 quad) audio plays through both the speaker and the headphones, which I don't want. Also, when I check the volume, there are 2 sliders, one for the speakers and one for the headphones. When I check the mixers, almost all programs are under the normal speaker mixer (and they play through the normal speakers), but some (steam being one of them) show up under the headphones mixer. When I move the slider to a new sound volume for the headphones, it makes the little ding sound (through the headphones) and I can hear the test. Disabling my default speakers didn't work, and neither did setting the headphones as default. I uninstalled and reinstalled my drivers. I'm totally at a loss of what to do. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

A:Sound Plays Through Speakers When Headphones Plugged In

Some systems have an Audio Control Panel that allows the option of having the speakers on when you plug in headphones, or to not have speakers on. Check the Control Panel/Hardware and Sound to see if you have this and the option.

For example, I have RealTek audio and in my Realtek HD Audio Manager, I have the option for how I want the headphone jack to operate.

You say you uninstalled and reinstalled the audio drivers, but did you use the HP supplied driver? If not, the HP supplied sound driver is the preferred driver. Non-Vendor drivers in many cases may not work or work correctly.

A:[SOLVED] Sound plays out comp speakers but not headphones...?

Since they're USB, you may have unknowingly muted them. I had similar issues when the headset I was using was USB..Windows picked it up as an alternate audio source.

So, go to your control panel, then Sounds and Audio Devices. Click the audio tab and change your default playback device to the headset. Once that's done, click the volume button underneath it and make sure it's not muted or turned down all the way.

Once that's checked, before to change your default playback device to the Realtek HD Audio.

If that doesn't work, I'm not sure what to tell you. Since the mic still works, the headset is obviously good..although it IS possible to blow the speakers in the ear pieces..I had that problem with Logitec headsets.

Good Evening Friends,

I have had this problem for a long while now but essentially I am forced to use a headphone setup for my desktop but would really like to use external speakers instead of this current set up. What is confusing me is that these external speakers worked for a good long while then stopped working suddenly. Furthermore I switched monitors to a HP w2207 and was wondering if that had anything to do with it. I have updated Realtek to the current drivers and the premise remains the same. Any help would be much appreciated.

All sound from the PC fades out over the course of ~2 seconds only to instantly return when a new (loudish) sound is made. It almost feels as if the headset is raising its baseline of noise after a bit and things the normal sounds are just nothing until a loud sound comes in and makes it realize there is still noise to be played. Best way to describe it is having poor thresholds set to a VoIP voice detection, you make a loud noise and it will kick on and detect lower noise for a bit before shutting down again.

I have not had this issue happen when using my monitor's speakers (HDMI into GPU)

There is no sound card on this PC, and I've not been able to find any sort of software to control the audio processor outside of the windows playback enhancements.

Windows Communications volume attenuation is set to do nothing, VoIP programs are off as well so as to rule out those. No enhancements are on in windows playback enhancements.

When you use a USB connected headphone (wired or wireless) you do not use the PC's sound card, The USB system does the conversion from digital to analog audio. Thus the problem is somewhere in the USB headset system.

Ever since I purchased my laptop, whenever I play anything including sound, the sound will play fine for a few seconds before fading out. If I pause the media and then hit "play", the sound will again play fine before fading out. The exact length of time before fadeout varies -- it can last as long as 20 seconds, or start fading immediately. It only does this if I'm using my device speakers, which is why it took me so long to realize it was doing it -- I usually use headphones. I've tried updating my speaker's drivers. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers. I ran troubleshooting and it brought back a clean bill of health. I changed the default format from 24 bit to 16 bit, and that seemed to help a little (the sound didn't fade as fast, and it stopped making this "crinkling" noise whenever something was played), then tried searching for new drivers (still saying I have the latest drivers installed) and troubleshooting. This time, the troubleshooting brought up the fact that I might want to turn off sound effects and audio enchancements; when I went to try, there was no "Enhancements" tab. I've been working on this problem off and on for months -- again, I usualy use headphones so it's not usually a problem, but when I need my speakers I need my speakers. I've tried everything on Google and that I've found on here. Suggestions? Something I haven't tried?

I can watch ANY type of video file and not a have problem, even watch AVI's burned onto a DVD, but whenever I try to put a DVD in the sounds gets all messed up. I just recently got an I/O magic external DVD burner, but I haven't played DVD's in my laptop for about 2 months so I don't know how long this has been going on. However I'm not sure this is related because there was no install software. It works as soon as you plug it in basically. Plus I tried unplugging the DVD burner and I still get the same result. Anyways, ALL help is appreciated.

Cheers all,

Problem is as stated in the thread; I downloaded, untar'd and set the theme up today. I know it's specifically the "Close Window" sound since it's unique from the others. I'm referring to the following actions in particular (there may be more things I could do to proc it, but I haven't checked yet)...
Opening a Program
Opening a Folder in Windows Explorer
Starting a new Windows Explorer Session
Closing a Window (expected function)
Closing a Windows Explorer Session (expected function)
Those not followed by (expected function) have a different sound assigned to them, although the Close Window sound plays anyways. Not always immediately after the action is performed, either - there can be anywhere from a 1 to 15 second delay before the .wav plays.

The sounds are located in C:\Windows\Media\AltimitOS\ with AltimitOS being a custom folder I copied in. I originally untar'd everything to the desktop, then created and moved everything into the folder and tried running the theme from there. I've made sure all file paths are leading to the \Media\AltimitOS folder.

Any help is appreciated. Cheers,

I have seen a few posts that are similar to this, but none of them offered solutions and most were not for Win 10, so I figured I would make another. Recently, my audio will come out of my speakers and headphones when headphones are plugged in via the jack. Audio via headphones is incredibly distorted (dialogue completely unintelligable) and will still play through the headphones even when all sound is muted. My headphones are not detected in playback devices (Show disabled devices is enabled) and going to Control Panel>Realtek HD Audio Manager>Device Advanced Settings does not bring up the options for Classic or Multi mode, but instead only displays options for recording devices ("Tie up of input jacks" vs "Separate input jacks"). I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling 2 different audio drivers from Lenovo and tested 3 different headphones that connect via the headphone jack. I have not tried usb headphones, but would like to fix the headphone jack primarily. I hope someone is able to help!

Hi, I have recently bought a thinkpad T420 and really like it but I have a problem with headphones not working at all :-( When I plug in the headphones nothing happens at all, audio still plays via speakers. I have tried to uninstall and install drivers for the audio, in Device manager under Sound current audio device driver is Conexant 20672 SmartAudio HD - unfortunately audio only plays via speakers. I have also updated other drivers to make sure it is all up to date, also updated bios.Under Sound tab in settings in the playback deviced only Speakers are listed, no headphone.... Don't know what else to do....? I bought this laptop especially for it being semi-portable so I can travel with it but having no headphone option ( on a train... ) may not be a good idea. Any solutions will be much appreciated.  Thanks, Pav

Did my first budget pc build and I feel really sick because of a problem!

I've grown tired trying to fix this on my own and i see this as my last resort.
My problem is that when i plug in my headphones to the front panel of my PC, the sound plays out of the speakers still.
What i want is for the speakers to cut out when i plug my headphones in.
Headphones work as on my laptop speakers cut out when i plug in the headphones!

I've gone through forums and stuff and the instructions/help they have does not cover mine.

Here are 4 printscreens of my problem:

Below is the printscreen of the Speaker properties. As you can see, it shows the front and rear port together.

Below is the window i get when i click on the folder icon (connector settings ) on realtek manager:

Below is when i click on the link 'device advanced settings':

Below is when i click on the speaker icon in taskbar and click on 'volume control options':

So many forums/help guides have the disabled rear panel option thing and among other things but i dont have them.
The audio driver i downloaded from the asus website with respect to my mobo.
I've tried to include everything and sorry if i've left anything out.
Will be checking constantly for replies so i can reply back!

Please guys/girls,

Is there a way to fix this? I'm 20 and i've had really crap headaches over this.
My temp fix is to remove my audio cable from the rear lime panel that goes to my monitor speakers.
I beg that you great peo... Read more

Everytime i try to watch a video or play music the sound fades down so much you cant hear the audio. This has been happening ever since i started using the laptop.

Hi, Try the following. Download the Realtek HD Audio installer on the link below and save it to your Downloads folder. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp78501-79000/sp78936.exe When done, hold down the Windows key and press R Into the Run window, type devmgmt.msc and hit enter. In Device Manager, expand Sound, Video and Game Controllers.  Right click the Realtek device and select Uninstall - you should also get a prompt to remove the current driver, tick the box to allow this and then proceed with the uninstall. When complete, download and reinstall the Chipset driver on the following link. http://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp78001-78500/sp78355.exe When the Chipset reinstallation has completed, restart the notebook. When windows has reloaded, open your Downloads folder, right click on the Realtek installer and select 'Run as Administrator' to start the installation.  When this has completed, restart the notebook again and let windows fully load for a few minutes before checking. Regards, DP-K

Saturday ( yesterday ) I happily received my new Spectre x360 ( with Kaby Lake i7 ).When I wanted to play music or a video, I became less happy.I have been trying for more than 6 hours to get my music volume in a normal state. 1. I play a music or a video, for example on youtube2. The first few seconds, the sounds is good, then the volume turns down3. I can only hear the sound very very soft  I have tried all suggested options I read here on the the forum like the thread B&O Audio: Sound Fades on Laptop Speakers https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebook-Audio/B-amp-O-Audio-Sound-Fades-on-Laptop-Speakers/td-p/57231...  I have tried to reinstall drivers, download other versions and tried to install. I upgraded BIOS and I even resetted the whole laptop, no luckhttp://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04973149 I do believe it is a driver problem. I see different models spectre and I also noticed people with an omen or envy with Ban& Olufsen speakers having same issue. I wonder if the problem is going to be fixed soon. Therefor I am thinking to return laptop as it is still few days old, but rest of the laptop is great, so fixing the sound would be my preferred option. Is there anyone having the solution ....correct driver? ( was the default installed and latest for spectre, I also found, both have the same issue ). [UPDATE] I thought to try my headphones and see it was playing correc... Read more

Everything was working fine until about 9 months ago. I have tried switching settings on realtek and the windows control panel to headphone mode, but no matter what settings are on, my computer fails to mute the speakers when playing through headphones. There are absolutely NO troubleshooting topics on windows or realtek websites about this. Help!

A:My Realtek Audio Driver Plays Headphones and Speakers

I think I remember in the realtek settings on my old computer it said something along the lines of "disable front audio when headphone is plugged in" with a check box to toggle on and off.

-- do you see any settings resembling that?
If you have already found the on/off and it does not work, try uninstalling and re-installing the audio drivers and software.

I am posting regarding a bad piece of malware on my system that I can not seem to locate and eradicate. I had a redirect virus and some other junk. I have used CC Cleaner, RegClean, Hitman Pro 3.5, UnHackMe, and Malwarebytes to clean up my system, but this nasty piece of malware seems to evade all, no doubt hiding in some dll file or god knows where. I have Process Explorer up, so I can see exactly when iexplorer is activated on a hidden basis. It usually takes a couple of minutes and then the advertising music/commentary starts to play from god knows what web address. To alleviate the problem, I immediately put iexplorer in "suspend" mode on the Process Explorer. This halts any activity, but does not solve the problem of the malware still being present.

I took care of the redirect virus by cleaning up my system32/drivers/etc/hosts file which possessed the nasty ::1 entry (now deleted).

I have not run Combofix, as it looks complicated to operate and dangerous and the manual indicates to not use it without the guidance of an expert.

Can anyone give me some assistance with this? My outside technical consultants came in and helped clean up my system, but did not get the job fully done. Now they say that they want to "rebuild" my PC, i.e. reinstall everything. What a headache that would be.

Can anyone help with this problem?

I had a SoundBlaster Live Value card which I just upgraded to the 24-bit version for the enhaced surround sound capabilities.

Both cards had/have the same problem. I have a cable going from the digital out jack to a mini digital 5.1 receiver. Now the receiver is a cheap Walmart brand system, but it tests fine when I hook a DVD player up to it and run the surround sound tests. All speakers check out.

When I hook the SoundBlaster card up to it and run the Creative speaker tests under 5.1 mode, digital out only, I only get the front left and front right speakers working.

Is there something I missing here? Could it be the cable? I am using an RCA video cable with a mono stereo convertor on one end that plugs into the sound card. My understanding was that with a digital signal that is all you need, and it will either be there and working or not at all.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This might be a stupid question but I can't seem to solve it.

Sometimes when I adjust the volume on my laptop the sound reduces drastically and then slowly fades back. This even happens when I increase the volume. In fact, as soon as I move the volume slider (in any direction) the sound reduces drastically. The same happens when I adjust the sound using the keyboard controls but not when I adjust the volume in the program playing the sound (Chrome playing YouTube, Windows Media Player, Groove, VLC etc.)

It doesn't happen every time but I haven't been able to find a pattern except that I think it happens less often with VLC. (I might be mistaking though.)

It is very frustrating because it is near impossible to adjust the volume without instant feedback. I have to guess a random adjustment, sit through a few minutes of very quiet audio only to find out it is still too loud or soft for my liking. And then the process starts all over again.

I am using a Dell laptop with Windows 10 installed.

Things I've tried which didn't work:
Set action for when "Windows detects communication" to "Do Nothing"
Enabled (and again disabling) the "Loudness Equalization" enhancement in the sound settings.
Ignoring it.

Any help will be much appreciated.

Hi guys, just reinstalled windows 7. everything works great, then I went to paly a file and to my surprise, no sound. Tested speakers on another device, they work. Sound card drivers are working and up to date.

When I play a media file, I can see the sound gage go. So I went in sounds, playback device, and all I see in there is my sound card, no speakers or headphones icon. Thus no sounds from speakers. Tried other headphones/speakers they also dont work on the PC.

First two screenshots are my Device Manager, third one shows my playback devices.. My wife needs this for her business and I am losing sleep over this for days now I tried everything. Any ideas?

A:Windows 7 SOUND, No Speakers in Playback device, thus no sound from speakers

Hi -

What sound card do you have?

Double-click on the HD audio device in Device Manager - what is driver and date?

Usually there is an audio codec/ drivers, e.g., IDT, Realtek, etc... that must be installed.

What are system specs - exact model number from label on back of PC, please.

Regards. . .

I am have a problem trying to figure out how to stop audio playback through my desktop speakers when my headphones are plugged into the 3.5 mm jack on the left side of my All-In-One Inspiron One 2320 desktop.  I have tried everything in my knowledge of my computers and audio set up.  If someone could help me figure out how to configure the audio so that when I plug in my headphones the audio playback is only streaming through the headphone speakers and not both headphones and the internal desktop speakers simultaneously I would appreciate any input on this situation.  Thank You

There should be a RealTek HD Audio Manager on your PC (not sure how it's accessed).  You should be able to reconfigure the jacks with that.

With Dell Support Assist microphone test -- earphone playback is good, on-board speaker is terribly scratchy. The sound card lists as "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
The laptop is Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional, 236GB used, 214GB free space, Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor, 64 bit OS, 4GB memoryThe built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset and external speakers (both 3.5 mm jack interface) sound good and a HDMI connected projector sounds good.
I will appreciate advice.

A:On-board speakers are scratchy but external speakers & headphones sound good?

Hello. As a test, switch from the IDT audio driver to the Windows native audio driver.
1. Open the Device Manager (find it in the Control Panel, or type devmgmt.msc into the search box).2. Expand the "Sound, video & game controllers" and right click on "IDT High Definition Audio Device".3. Select to "Update Driver Software".4. Click on "Browse my computer for driver software".5. Click "Let me pick from a list of drivers on my computer".6. Put a check in the box "Show compatible hardware" if not already checked.7. In the list of devices, click "High Definition Audio" (the native driver).8. Click "Next".9. On the Update Driver Warning box, click "Yes" (install the driver). 10. Restart the laptop if prompted. If not prompted, then no need to restart.[To get back to the IDT driver, do it again but reverse the names in steps 2 and 7.]
If you get the noise while using the native driver then it is not a driver issue, which would mean there is a strong chance of speaker failure, particularly since the noise is not in headphones. If you would like to replace the speakers I can point you to the service manual.
