Compaq Presario CQ60 300 SI CPU Upgrade

Q: Compaq Presario CQ60 300 SI CPU Upgrade

Hallo, I'm trying to upgrade my CQ60 300 SI which stock CPU is a Sempron SI-42 mounted on a Wistron 303C Socket s1 MOBO with a AMD Turion 64 X2 TMDTL60HAX5DM but as I have installed it my PC didn't start. I had a black screen with no tentative bootstrap. I had already upgraded my BIOS to the F.54 from the old F.35 version, but this didn't help at all. Is there anybody who experienced the same problem and have found a wayout to solve the issue? Thanks in advance

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi!  My wife's laptop no longer takes a charge from the power supply.  I have tried different batteries and different power bricks.  No charge.  I want to try replacing the motherboard (thinking it may well be the power jack that isn't working.)  Can anyone tell me what the correct model number is for my motherboard?  I see several out there to buy including 498462-001 and 501266-001.  Are either of these the correct one? Thanks,Tom.

ok so i have a compaq presario cq60 which is the biggest lemon ive had.

first problems started when the warranty went out like that same day it said the battery need replacing i ignored it and it started dying like 3 minutes after being unplugged but it says it has 98% battery life so i leave it plugged up always.
next i started getting the blue screen of death like all the time until it started happening so often i couldnt even use it.
so i took the hard drive from my Toshiba and put in it (toshiba laptop had beer spilt in it and stopped working) and that stopped the blue screen but have me two other issues.
one it says my windows is not genuine which it is it was pre downloaded when i got it
and two the sound doesnt work not the speakers nor the headphone jack ( but i tried usb headphones and they worked fine but they werent mine)
so please someeone help me with this issues its real annoying

Hi and welcome to the Forum. So you took a HD from one laptop to another with the original Windows 7 loaded up? If that is the case then you have an OEM Windows 7 that is only licensed for the PC that it was originally loaded into. It is not legal to use it on another machine.

I am also having problems connecting to a brand new Virgin Mobile MiFi2200. The message says"this computer is connected to VirginMobile MiFi2200 4DC Secure but does not have access to the internet.- If you are connecting to a wireless hotspot you might need to open a web browser to finish connecting."
After speaking to Virgin for 4 hours over the last 2 days, and spending 2-1/2 hours with the Geek Squad today, I am back to square one. Anyone else have this problem, or better yet, have any suggestions??

I tried running OTL but when I double-click on the icon, it asks to 'Choose Windows directory' but no matter which drive I choose from the list C or E [The Recovery drive], I get a prompt from the Runtime Scanner showing: Target is not Windows 2000 or later

So, I have a Compaq presario CQ-60 running windows 7 home premium. I have been troubled by monitor flicker. its seemingly random. happens in pulses. almost like a block or grid flashes up on the screen, and it disappears. pretty frequently. in irregular places at irregular times. like I said, frequent but very random. I have a second monitor connected to the laptop's output, my dell HD 22 from my desk top and there is no flicker seen on that screen. I have opened the laptop and checked for loose, damaged wiring. it all inspects OK. ( I am pretty good with electronics) I am at the point where i am beginning to suspect my inverter circuitry is to blame because the monitor output does not flicker, so that should tend to isolate the trouble to the laptop's display circuitry. right? I figured since the display is bright, not discolored at all, and the inverter is supposedly hi voltage circuitry it just tends to seem logical that it could cause this random flickering because of the voltage or whatever. I tested the ram chips one at a time and they are OK. I also tested the HD with the segate downloadable diagnostics tool, and it passed the SMART test. anyways, anyone care to offer an opinion or question before I order a $15 dollar inverter chip? the computer has 2GB ram, intel celeron processor 900 @ 2.2ghz graphics is powered by Mobile Intel 45 Express Chipset Family (WDDM1.1) driver v. 8.15.10.1749any opin... Hi,Different models have different power requirements 65W or 90 W. You can see on page 1-5 of service manua.http://www.notebook-manuals.com/laptop-manuals/service_manual_for_COMPAQ_Presario_CQ%2060_f90f2aca5c_Compaq%20CQ60.pdf So you can get one of 90w which will be good for all models. The best idea is to buy them online where the prices are cheaper or even get a good universal adapter. Example:https://www.amazon.com/s/ref=nb_sb_noss?url=search-alias%3Delectronics&field-keywords=Compaq+Presario+CQ60+ac+adapter Hope it helps,David

Hi,  This is now an old laptop, maybe 7 years old, but hardly used and perfectly functioning on Windows 7. However, I want to update it to Windows 10.   I believe it is no longer free, but will cost me about £100. My question is - is my laptop compatible with Windows 10.  I don't want to buy it over the internet and its not compatible. Many thanks. Mary Ann

A:Compaq Presario CQ60 - is it compatible with Windows 10??

Hi,Officially I do not think Hp releases any windows 10 drivers. However I have installed win 10 on systems much older than yours and usually it is sufficient to let Microsoft install the drivers for all the devices automatically. Sometimes (rarely) it can be necessary to install drivers from other sources such as the manufacturer of the various devices or drivers released for different computers which have the same device.Anyway you can try to install windows 10 for free initially by downloading it from Microsoft. Create a small partition on your harddrive of about 20 gb and install win 10 in dualboot and see if everything works correctly and then subsequently you can choose to wipe the drive and reinstall Win 10 or delete the win 10 installation and continue with 7.In my opinion win10 will work fine.https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10 Let me know if you need any further help,David

Hello, this is my first post at HP and I will try to explain it the best as I know. All started when I installed Windows 10 Enterprise 64Bits at this notebook, Compaq Presario CQ60-120ES.As default the video driver was with alert but it was not problem at all because the screen was working witha basic Window Driver and after try to find online driver to the video device It was installed a very good driver,but,...But, after a few weeks I understood that, when I closed the screen and open it again, after the hibernation orsuspend, the screen was always color black, the computer awake always but the screen was black, then I pressed the power on ten seconds to completely power off the notebook and then I could turn on as always. A good day I decided to fix the issue with closing/open the screen and black screen as result, then I returned to install Windows 7 Ultimate 32 Bits. I was very happy surprised when the Windows 7 installation finishes, becausethe first that I did it was close and open the screen, and now was working very well. I did not know if the main problem was at the video device driver or in some differences between energy administration of Windows 10 and Windows 7. Then I follow the first thread, the video driver. I downloaded three video drivers to FV598EA#ABE to the intel graphics solution, one to Windows Vista 32 bit and two to Windows 7, one for 32 and other for 64 bit. Finally I returned to install Windows 10, the unique driver that I was enable... Read more

as far as i know, if you can type in your password on the log-on screen then the keyboard is working, if the problem would appear after logging in or it will appear when you are on your desktop screen then it may be an operating system problem or a user account corruption issue the keyboard would only be a hardware failure if when you turn on your nb, there will be no ligts on teh keyboard, capslock key will not lit or no response at all from the moment you turn on the nb for the touchpad, try to check if its off or on... if there is an orange light above the touchpad then its off, toggle the switch on that light to turn it to blue.. so before anything else.. TRY THIS FIRST!!!!1. remove the battery2. disconnect  the power adapter3. with no power supply at all, press and hold the power button for 1 min.. make sure it will be 1 min... in technical terms we call this HARD RESET.. this process would release static charges that might be contained on the power button bec sometimes those static charges causes harware malfunctionalities..    then it this step will not work.. do this...  try to go to safe mode by continually pressing F8 when booting (press F8 when you see hp invent screen), then you'll be directed to advance boot options... choose last known good config.. then it will boot to last known good settings.... please let me know if this will not work.. if not "choose repair your computer" on the... Hi. I have a Compaq Presario CQ60 that is about a year old. These days I have been experiencing problems with my laptop. The problem is that the top hand corner gets hot, and then my laptop automatically shuts down itself. There is plenty of battery on my laptop, and it also happens, while my charger is plugged into it. This mainly happens when I am at school, where  I do not bring my notebook fan cooler. I can basically do nothing, because every 30 minutes it will automatically shut down itself. It even happens when I am in "Battery save" mode. This is starting to irrate me, because I have only had this laptop for about a year, and my warranty just expired so there isn't much I could do. I have read about this being a problem to a lot of people... I am wondering if it has something to do with my battery, because it is really bad. It only lasts for about 30 minutes from 100% to 10%. I do not know what the problem is, because I have no expertise in laptops. I hope  you can help me.

A:Compaq Presario CQ60, overheating and automatically shutting...

You should post your issue on the laptop forum.   If you bought your laptop using a credit card then check with your credit card company about a possible warranty extension.  Some credit card companies do extend the manufacturer's warranty by 1 year on electronics when the device is purchased. It's possible that there is too much dust inside the PC.

There are strange noises coming from the inside of my laptop. It makes a crackly noise like static and a screeching noise like a fax machine or an old modem.

It doesn't happen all the time, but it's worrying me. There's a history to this. I bought a laptop a couple of weeks before Christmas, but it seized up and refused to boot either normally or from the recovery drive. This happened within 2 days of buying it and shortly after hearing noises like those I've got now.

The first one couldn't be repaired but it was exchanged, no-quibble - immediately, so I've had this one for a few weeks. The fact that I'm hearing strange noises now from this replacement makes me think that either it's normal and was nothing to do with the crash, or that this model has a failing somewhere. I've googled and can't see anything relating to either.

Any ideas?

A:Compaq Presario CQ60 - strange noises from inside

Take it back and let them hear it. It's up to them to make good on whatever purchase you've made. They may well have had more than one complaint on these particular laptops and know there's issue with the bunch of them. Don't be concerned about getting what you've paid for. Jazz
No this shouldn't be happening.

Hello,

I own a Compaq Presario CQ60-400SD running Windows Vista SP2 (32 bit), which is the original installed OS in my system (came pre-installed). I bought the laptop in 2009 (October or November, I can't recall exactly when), and about three weeks ago I reinstalled the OS. I also installed a new memory dimm (1GB).

The CPU is an AMD Sempron SI-42 2.10 GHz and the Video Card is Nvidia GeForce 8200M G.

After I reinstalled the OS, about every 4 - 5 days I experience BSODs in different occasions. I mainly use my laptop for work, with software such us AutoCAD, QGIS and HEC-RAS (hydraulics analysis software).

Hi.  I'm trying to find out for my brother if his Compaq Presario CQ60-210US laptop, which is running  a  Vista 32-bit OS, can be upgraded to a 64-bit version/editon of Windows like 7, 8/8.1 or 10?   As stated, the laptop's OS is  Vista 32-bit and I think its Vista Home Premium, but I'm not sure.  It has 4GB of RAM which is the max for a 32-bit OS.   I realize that you cannot do an in-place upgrade from a 32-bit OS to a 64-bit OS and that a clean install will be necessary, but does anyone know if this laptop's hardware, BIOS etc. support 64-bit operating systems?  Thanks.

Okay, so I load up the screen, and it says

"Windows Error Recovery"
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause.

And it has options for...
Launch Startup Repair
Start Windows

I tried the Launch Startup Repair, but it gets stuck at the screen, and nothing pops up. Theres just a mouse.

And if I hit Start Windows, it all goes well, but then after it starts windows, before I get to the login screen, it quickly flashes to a blue screen with text on it for a few milliseconds, and then just goes ALL the way back to the Windows Error Recovery.

Can I get some help here?
Thanks.

I had the same problem as well... I was able to boot up in strictly safemode no networking and back up all my documents and then re-install windows. My restore points were not active so I couldn't go that path of attack to fix the problem. after the re install was finished and 1 round of update were done I continued to do the second round of updates from then it BSODed... luckily system restored worked this time and I am guessing one of the updates are affecting the compaq presario CQ60 models... this is very upsetting. I am also now setting up a Ubuntu partition and thinking I will use that primarily from now on... I hope my story can help you out or give someone an idea to help you out.

I was working on a customer's laptop, a Compaq CQ60, that refused to boot into windows and System Recovery disabled all recovery options except for Command Prompt.

On a hunch, after pressing Escape during BIOS boot, I selected HDD Test. The test ran and failed with "Replace Hard Drive." OK.. the laptop sat there for a few minutes and never did anything else, so I tried to get out of that screen. Nothing responded, so I just held the Power button to turn the computer off.

When I pressed Power again to turn the computer back on, the Power and Wireless LEDs comes on, the CD drive is accessed and then the HDD LED lights up for a second and goes out. The screen never comes up nor do the backlights.

I have tried hooking up an external monitor, but that never shows anything either.

I have tried taking the memory out, cleaning the contacts, putting them back in, swapping the modules around, booting with one or the other.... No effect.

I pulled the battery and the CMOS battery, unplugged AC and let it sit for a good half hour. I held the Power button for thirty seconds. Plugged the CMOS battery back in then the AC. Turned it on and still no go.

I cannot figure out WHAT could have happened!? Any other ideas? Thanks...

Hello;

I have had a Compaq Presario 1500 laptop for about 2 years now, and I am quite un-satisfied when it comes to multi-tasking several applications at the same time. Sometimes it is so slow that I cannot minimize a full-screen application to read up on something on the net. I currently only have 256 megs of ram, but I read on the internet that tihs model could have up to 1 gigabyte. This is great, but therein lies my question. The laptop has two ram slots, one of which has been empty since i got the computer. Could I get a gig of ram and still keep the 256y meg stick as an added boost? or is the 1 gig the maximum for both slots?

A:Compaq Presario RAM upgrade

Well if your laptop supports a maximum of 1gb then that means 512mb per RAM slot.
Here are a few links on Newegg which is the Maximum Memory you could get for your Laptop. This is if you are in USA

I am upgrading a Compaq Presario 5000 model #5WB220 with a very low 15 GB hard drive for a friend. It currently has Windows ME and there is no Compaq Restore CD.

I have increased the memory to 320 by adding an additional 256 MB RAM.

I am wanting to totally replace the 15GB hard drive with an 80 GB hard drive and load Windows XP Home.

The problem I am finding out is that Compaq has propriertory info on a partition within the existing drive. From what I understand without the Restore CD, I can't put the new drive in.

I'm wondering if there are any other alternatives to doing this.

Can I install XP on the existing drive and then transfer all the data (to include the compaq proprietory info) to the new drive in a slave position?

Original 500GB HDD was showing signs of eminent failure.I successfully cloned the drive to a new 400GB HDD, using NORTON GHOST.(I know this drive is smaller than the original, but less than 30GB was being used on the original)Anyway, The new drive would not boot.Assuming that the problem may be OS license-related, I ordered the Compaq Recovery Discs Set.While waiting for the Recovery Disc Set to arrive, I purchased a Sandisk 120GB SSD.(Again, I know that the 120GB SSD is smaller than the original 500GB HDD that came with the computer, but I do not plan to even fill it 50%.)Anyway, The Recovery Disc Set arrived and I attemted to use it on the new Sandisk 120GB SSD.The process seemed to go fine, all 3 discs of the set seemed to copy, and then the computer restarts and a screen displaying files flying across the screen from one folder to another stays there forever.I waited 15 hours and came back and I still just see:Files flying across the screen, from one folder to another folder. The drive activity light is blinking, but obviously there is a problem. Some possible related facts/information:The SSD is detected in the BIOS.The SSD Checks good, by the BIOS Diagnostics "Smart" Tests.I cannot find anywhere in the BIOS to disable AHCI, it only shows SATA or IDE.Current Bios version is 5.5.5, and I have been unable to find a BIOS Update anywhere.Current Memory (RAM) is 4GB (2x2GB), which was an upgrade since the machine was originally purchased. Can someone p... I would like to upgrade the memory on my Compaq Presario f500 laptop but I can't find the specs anywhere to know how much I can upgrade to. entering the product number gives me Compaq Presario f500 CTO, and states info is not on the web.

It had vista on when I bought it, but I wiped that and installed Linux. Linux tells me it currently has the following:
Memory
L1 cache 64kB
L1 Cache 1024kB.

I assume from that I can put a 1gB stick into the 64 slot?

Do I need to take the current sticks out to determine what type it is, and how to I decipher that information?

Many thanks

Hi:

Here's the problem:

Someone asked me to see if I could upgrade an early (old) Compaq Presario 5WV254 computer. The first thing I did was max out the RAM (768MB) using Crucial's 'certified' Compaq modules.

This dinosaur has a 40GB hard drive and an nVidia 8MB graphics card. I placed Windows XP Pro into the drive and proceeded to format the drive with NTFS. Everything went smoothly, and the machine rebooted after installing the drivers, etc.

Unfortunately, instead of continuing to proceed with the usual installation process, it starts the initial setup process over and over (I let this happen about 7 times) and will not complete the installation.

I've performed upgrades on lots of these older Compaq Presarios, but have never encountered this before.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how this issue can resolved?

Thanks in advance.

Griff

My Presario CQ60 is quite old, but still works great, but the operating system and Office needs to be upgraded.   Currently running under Windows VISTA (Basic), and Windows Live Essentials 2011.  I would like to upgrade the operating system (VISTA) to one of the later versions of Windows, and would like to upgrade to a more modern version of Microsoft Office which includes MS Outlook as the email manager. Any help in how to determine which programs can run on this model laptop is appreciated. Tomja2 in Kinsale, VA

A:Upgrade of a Compaq Presario Notebook

@Tomja2 Hello;Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums! There are two kinds of "upgrades" to newer versions of Windows -- one with an Upgrade Path, and others without. The Upgrade Path means that when you upgrade the OS, you can retain your settings, personal data, and applications.  This is only offered (historically) from one OS version to the next.  So, in your case, that means it only works upgrading Vista to Win7. Without an Upgrade Path, you would only upgrade the OS components.  You would have to redo all your settings, restore all your personal data, and reinstall all your applications.  Anything newer than Win7 is going to be this kind of Upgrade, basically a whole new installation of Windows. As to Win8, your best bet there would be Win8.1 -- if you can find it, as that introduced a lot of improvements over Win8.  But, MS also removed the Start Menu, starting with Win8.  So, if you decide on Win8.1, I strongly recommend you then consider installing a third-party Start Menu.  And finally, I would advise very strongly against trying to upgrade to Win10.  HP does not provide any Win10 drivers for your PC, and without those, you are stuck with the generic drivers Microsoft will install, and most likely, that will mean that one of more of your hardware devices are not going to functional properly. As to the specific programs, your best bet is to visit any support forums for the programs you are ru... Good morning, I have Windows 7 on it now, and it runs just fine, but the specs say it can only take 2GB of memory. I didn't know if the Compaq Presario SR5030NX is capable of running Windows 8, and if that would allow it to use more memory, or if the memory is a hardware limitation. Thank you,Tania

The following weblink will suggest whether HP has tested your system for Windows 8:http://www8.hp.com/us/en/ad/windows-8/instructions.html If your system is not tested, HP will not release the drivers directly for your model through HP.com website. The following weblink will suggest if your system is compatible with Windows 8:http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/upgrade-to-windows-8 If your system is compatible with Windows 8, most of the drivers would be available through Windows 8. If you need any specific drivers, please follow these steps:1. In the Run box type devmgmt.msc.2. Unknown devices would be listed as such and marked out with a yellow question mark.3. Select the unknown device or other device for which you need drivers and right click to access Properties.4. In the Properties window click on Details tab and select Device Instance Id  or Hardware ID from the drop down.5. An alphanumeric string like this PCI\VEN_1217&DEV_7130&SUBSYS_012F1025&REV_01\4&6B16D5B&0&33F0 is the identification marker for the device.6. Please provide this number so that we can suggest the appropriate driver. According to the specifications of your system, the motherboard can only support 2GB maximum memory:http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c00910113
