I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

It's very important to follow the audacity instructions from page 4 to page 8 thoroughly. Skip a procedure or do it out of sequence and you will have problems.

Okay so i am using the most updated version of audacity on a dell dell Optiplex 380 computer, i have all my microphones hooked up and speakers properly hooked up and defaulted BUT
When i am trying to record a stereo mix, the music waveform i opened to be the JUST the music to listen while recording over it is being recorded with my voice waveform. ANY HELP ???

A:Audacity Recording

Mr.PierceOptiplex 380 computer
Hello. You have posted on the Laptop Audio board. There is a Desktop Audio board that might be better suited, as we don't have any experience with those models.
I'll try to give an answer, but not sure I'm following what you are trying to do.
Mr.Piercetrying to record a stereo mix
Are trying to record "a" mix, or are you trying to use the recording source called "stereo mix" in the Windows Sounds dialog? Because there is a big difference.
Mr.Piercethe music waveform i opened to be the JUST the music to listen while recording over it is being recorded with my voice waveform.
While you are in Audacity, you opened (imported) an audio file, then attempted to record over it with a microphone?
In that case, set the mic as the default recording device, not stereo mix.  Have Audacity play the track that you imported, and listen to it through headphones so the mic won't pick it up.
Open a second track in Audacity. Arm it for recording and record the mic on it. After your voice is recorded, you can merge the tracks and export them as a stereo audio file.

I recently purchased a Dell desktop with 64-bit Vista Premium. Audacity 1.2.6 would not record: I got a message telling me to "check the input device settings and the project sample rate."

I checked in Audacity>Edit>Preferences, & there were no Recording Device options listed at all.

After Googling all possible avenues for advice, I found an extremely simple solution? that actually works!

* Select Personalization from the Control Panel.
* Select Sounds
* Select the Recording tab.
* In my case, there were 3 options shown: Front Mic, Microphone, & Line In, all grayed out & showing as not plugged in.
* Right click on any one of them choose "show disabled devices."
* This brought up the Stereo Mix option.
* Select Stereo Mix, Choose Properties, and click Enable.
* Voila! Now it worked the same way as Wave Out Mix in Windows XP, & I could record streaming audio with no problems!

Hope this helps!

I use the program Audacity quite often. I used to be able to choose the device that I record from. The window that allows you to choose the device is now greyed out on my adacity program;therefore, I can no longer make that choice.

If anyone knows how I can resolve this please let me know. I can load an audio file, change it, and download to desktop as MP3 or other format. The program works fine except that I can't record from other devices or websites while playing from them like I used to.

I'm sure there's an Audacity expert out there somewhere.

A:Recording with Audacity

I have Audacity, but don't use it for recording, just for reference (I have a recording studio and use Sonar). If it's greyed out I would suspect that either there is no Recording devices, or default recording device set in the Control Panel/Sound Panel or that there is a problem with the Audacity program and reinstalling may fix it. Also, with Win 7, you should be using the "Beta" version of Audacity.

There is also an Audacity forum, for help with the program problems.

I have been using the beta version of Audacity to record old LPs from a turntable to my Acer Aspire laptop (Windows 7) with great success - until today. During a recording there was a sudden screeching noise and Audacity crashed. Now, when I try to record, the sound is being picked up by the microphone in the laptop lid and not the jack lead (all leads plugged in as before which used to work fine). I know the lead is ok as it has been tested by someone else with their equipment. Does anyone know what has happened, please, and can I put it right? I did re-install Audacity but it is still not recording from the line-in, only picking up my voice from the laptop microphone.

Control Panel .. Sound >> Recording Options >> Show Disabled devices .. Enable Stereo Mix.

Audacity >> Edit >> Preferences >> Set Stereo mix as input ..

Some of this may depend on your Sound device and drivers .

Hello all

This is a rather complicated and annoying problem. Until a few weeks ago I was able to stream music online through Simplecast and record music in Audacity with clarity.

However recently I have had problems where in Audacity only the left channel was recording so that any output came through the left speaker. The audio input level meter showing the mic outputs for both channels has the left channel much higher than the right, and there is no recording of the right channel at all. I can provide JPEGS if needs be. I have a stereo mic lead from my mixer to the audio socket in the laptop, and have set up Audacity to record in Stereo.

In Simplecast when streaming audio the same problem prevails, only the left channel is recording which means that listeners can only hear sound through their left speaker. Again I can provide JPEGS.

It is nothing to do with cables; I have bought new cables and the same problem prevails. There is no problem with the mixer either as it is picking up both left and right channels. The cartridges on the turntables both pick up sound as well. It is just when you record - that is the problem.

I uninstalled the driver, Realtek HD, to see what would happen. The other soundcard on the computer (which is a no frills Microsoft one) has the same problem, but in Audacity the right hand bar is off the scale (JPEG available if needed) and clips when you start recording. In Simplecast the right hand bar is constantly at maximum (JPEG available if neede... Read more

Hi all,

I'm trying to figure out a problem that is keeping me from being able to record from the desktop with the application Audacity v1.3.12 beta, which was recommended to me on this site.

I've already posted this question on the Audacity forums website, but I'm not getting any feedback there on this issue, so I figured I'd try this question with the real experts here on W7F.

My computer is running on Windows 7 ULT and it has a Realtec ALC888 (7.1 Channel audio) sound card in it according to the Dell manual.

I, like many others, would like to record a streaming radio show broadcast for later listening that is not available as a Podcast.

I have explored all of the links in the Audacity help, tutorials, quick start guide, wiki page, forums "Click here before posting" links and done searches on this subject and I'm still not able to get Audacity v1.3.12 beta to show a recording device in the "Prefs>Devices>Recording Device" drop down menu... it still says "No Devices Found".

I've read all of the info about various settings, variations on sound drivers and sound cards, line-out to line-in patch cables, etc.

I'm a new Audacity user, but I'm pretty adept with new software, and within an hour of downloading and installing Audacity v1.3.12 on this Windows 7 ULT machine, I was able to import 3 different sound files, edit them down to the 3 segments that I wanted to combine, and adjust the volume on one part of my ne... So it's pretty simple, I visited a friend and had him record something in Audacity for me. I exported the file as a .wav, saved it in my videos directory, made sure it saved and then closed audacity. I didn't save the project itself, I've recorded countless times with Audacity and never needed to do such since the actual exported file would be complete.

I shut down my comp, got back home and I can't find the file ANYWHERE. It's like it never existed. I'm baffled because I remember saving it and everything, and I honest to goodness cannot find it. I tried using Audacity recovery tool, looking in recycle bin, everything. If anyone has any ideas for trying to find my lost file, please and thank you in advance.

I recently had a friend replace my computer, as it died. On my other computer, I had Audacity to record internet streaming audio, and to record spoken parts for my podcast show. When I had Audacity installed on my old computer, it had 4 options: Line-In, Microphone, Stereo, and Mono. I used the mono and stereo options to record streaming internet audio.
After installing Audacity on this computer, I only have the Line-In, and Microphone options. I have tried downloading other versions of Audacity, but it still only has the Line-In and Mic options no matter what version that I install. (I have version 1.2.6 of Audacity installed presently on my computer) The sound card is a SoundMax AudioESP. My friend says that he installed the lateest drivers for that sound card before he gave it to me. I am at a loss as to how to regain the stereo and mono options on Audacity, so I can record internet audio once again.

It's not Audacity, it's your sound card. It doesn't support the Advanced internal features for recording.
Go to the store and get a splitter. Plug it into your speaker port and run a jumper to your Line In from one of the splitter ports and plug your speakers into the other splitter port.
Configure Audacity to use the Line in as the Source device.

I was forced to give up my beloved Audacity which I had used for years, after moving from WFW311-W95-98SE over to Windows 7 [and I never found out why]! Now, there are free and fee alternatives out there, I went with Cyberlink's WaveEditor Express and later with Premium. I'm certainly glad I did! WE definitely does what I need it to do: allow full editing, and, I discovered, one can even "convert" a practice MP3 [which had right-speaker music and left-speaker vocals] into a mono-music only or mono-voice only. I do not know what SoundTap is.

Hi I'm running windows vista home premium.

my problem is that A.) I seem to get the feeling my computer isn't recognizing my audio card (maybe im paranoid) but when i goto device manager and i goto audio all i see is the sigma tel CODEC. I dont see like a sound card or anything.

. When i try to record with Audacity, i cant because even though i've got something plugged into either the mic, rear mic, or line it, it wont find it. Now, i've looked in my audio settings and when i plug into one of those spots the computer says its working and enabled.
I've also noticed that in my audio settings it doesnt find any sound cards, just the sigma tel codec, is that supposed to happen?
Based on what my Dell packing slip says, I've got Creative Sound Blaster HD Audio, wouldnt that be a sound card, not just a CODEC?

I dont really understand what a CODEC is anyway.

If anyone can help me out here that would be really appreciated.

Solved the problem in windows vista x86 home premium, service pack 1 regarding the problems with Audacity and internal recording:

Get a good soundcard with at least 6 channels (lesser might do the trick, but haven't checked this out), get a wire with a 3,5 mm jack in both ends, get a jack splitter and you're ready to go.

Right click on the volume icon and select recording devices. Here right click on the empty white space and enable show hidden and disabled devices. In here there should be something called "stereo mix" enable this.
Now hardwire your line in plug and the plug for your speakers. Remember the jack splitter? Put this in the plug for the speakers so you can have both the wire to your speakers and to the line in plug plugged in at the same time.

In Audacity you now have to select the right device to record with. Open edit, and select preferences. Then under audio I/O select the microsoft sound mapper - output as the output source and select the stereo mix as the input source.

This solved the problem for me. Ergo service pack 1 can STILL be hardwired no matter what others say.

Email me if you need help: [email protected]

Whenever I run fraps, audacity, and warcraft III (warcraft III running by itself doesn't seem to bother anything). I blue screen after 1-2 minutes of recording (sometimes it doesn't, but when it does it does for 3-4 times every time i try).

The error message I get from BSOD is kernel data inpage error, but sometimes the BSOD would just say "a process or thread crucial to the system has unexpectedly exited or been terminated". The error code is always 0x000000004.

Let me know of any pictures you'd like me to upload. Thank you for your time.

Yes, folks, it's another question about transferring audio cassettes to CD's. I've searched this forum and found that most people like Audacity for recording and encoding analog audio and that some prefer Polderbits. After two failed attempts I was able to get a 69 minute .wav file on my computer of the tape that I wanted. The first attempt I used Audacity's recorder and was not satisfied with the quality. It sounded like playing the tape with a towel wrapped around the speaker. I found and downloaded a fully functional 14 day trial of Polderbits recorder which allows me to specify the line-in port only for recording. I did the recording but I had the volume too high so it got distorted in some places. About 2:00 this morning I finally got a recording I liked from Polderbits but I have to to back to Audacity to remove the tape hiss, separate it into separate tracks and encode it as an mp3 file. My question is, is there one program that does all this in the same place. Did I miss something in Audacity's recorder that allows me to create a better recording than I got on the first attempt? In other words, can Audacity be directed only at the line-in port ignoring whatever other sound may be generated while I'm doing other things on my system? I'm willing to pay a little for the program (less than $50) as long as I can download a fully functional trial so I know what I'm getting before I spend my money.

Thanks in advance

coderitr

When previously on WIN 7 Pro 64 bit I was able to record with Audacity what ever was coming out the speakers using the "What U Hear" feature of my sound card (Creative PCIe X-Fi Titanium).

Having upgraded and subsequently a clean install of WIN 10 Pro 64 bit this no longer works. I have downloaded the latest Creative driver for the sound card (which shows correctly in Device Manager) right clicking the sound icon in System Tray and selecting "What U Hear" as default recording device same within Audacity itself.

I have noticed that within Control Panel - Devices and Printers that "What U Hear" actually shows up as a device and I don't recall this being the case with WIN 7. If I right click on this icon - Properties - Hardware - Properties - Driver it shows as a Windows Driver rather than Creative. Could this be the problem.

Anyone else having problems with Audacity and WIN 10 and specifically recording "What U Hear"?

A:Audacity and recording "What U Hear"

This must be specific to Creative. I have Realtek and "Stereo Mix" but its working properly. I just tested it with Audacity and working properly. Stereo Mix does not show up as a device.

Hi

This is my first post on this forum.

I'm not on the Web at home, but have to use PCs at my local library. Occasionally, I'd like to record something I hear using Audacity. The library's PCs actually have Audacity on their list of programs, but when I click the record button I get 'Error opening device. Please check the input device settings and project sampling rate.'

I did a Google search for this problem and got this solution:

http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch001194.htm

But using this solution means using the control panel, and when I went to it, it was empty.

So I searched this problem and found this:

http://www.tipsdotcom.com/control-panel-empty.html

It tells you to type 'gpedit.msc' in the Windows 7 search box and proceed from there. But when I do this, it comes up with 'no results'.

I'm going round in circles here, so can anyone suggest a way I can record music from a public pc with Audacity? Thanks.

A:Using Audacity on a library computer

Since you don't have admin privileges on a computer owned/operated by the library...you cannot perform admin functions.  I suggest that you discuss your situation with library personnel with responsibilities for all computers there and they can explain it more clearly than I can attempt.

I Have Nero and have ben tring to use it to put my MP3's files on a DVD disk and be able to play on a Home DVD Player that plays MP3's. My players all play MP3's files form a DATA CD disc fine. But all the players say can't read disc.

Do i need another program to do this? Can it be done? If so How do you do it..What settings do i use etc, etc. I've even tried to burn the disc using a program that burns music(MUSICMATCH)

Just want to store all my MP3's on a larger format to take up less space.
There must be a way to do this..Does the DVD player have to be able to play DVD AUDIO?

Thanks for any help.

Hello there!
I chatted with a Microsoft technician and he referred me to this forum.
I would like to download the same screen recording program as Microsoft use to record the tutorials on the Windows website (if you have no idea what they use, please suggest another program (but let me know if Microsoft are using it or not)).
Here's one of the videos: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows7/help/videos/personalizing-your-pc#tab=newto
Please c/p this link, I'm not able to post links until my account is verified.
Also, how can the screen recording program in the video be invisible? There are no running programs in the taskbar.

I don't know if I posted this in the right forum category.

Thanks
Rose

I would like to record a radio program that is run on Saturdays & I am not at home at the time of the program & my tape deck does not have timed feature for recording. I am wondering if I can set the time on my PC and possibly record the program with my CD-RW drive? I am running XP on a Pentium III.
Would like any suggestions. Thanks - Monique
