Disabling tapping on an Elantech touchpad

Q: Disabling tapping on an Elantech touchpad

My laptop came with an Elantech touchpad and the 5.0.3.6 driver. I cannot get the touchpad to disable tapping even though I've disabled it on the touchpad tab. There is no BIOS setting (Phoenix). Does anyone know if a different driver will correct the situation -- or a work-around?

Thanks
Walt

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

On my HP laptop, updating its Synaptics touchpad driver fixed that exact problem. Elantech may have a similar update. Check laptop mfg's site first, Elantech's site second.

(Note: it is possible that there is a driver update which addresses the issue but makes no mention of the fix in the description. Be sure to create a Restore Point before applying [any] update!)

HELP please... I have configured a Samsung laptop for a neighbour but can't turn off tapping, which I need to do to make the laptop usable for my neighbour, who is elderly.
The incumbent driver is from Elan (? ).

I have tried the latest driver from the Samsung website
I have tried a Synaptics driver

None of them deliver a 'disable tapping' button...

Anybody able to offer a solution / driver that allows this basic functionality?

Thanks!

How about an external mouse mate wired or not and just disable the touch pad altogether when the mouse is plugged and it comes back on when the mouse is taken out . I do that with all my laptops as I find the touch pad really very irritating.

Also if the user is then finding it difficult to manipulate the machine via the touch pad the external mouse is going to be so much easier

Hello! A while ago, i had installed win10 on my laptop and was satisfied enough with it. It had some issues with sound latency and touchpad stopped working after about a month without reboot, but in general it worked fine for me. Also touchpad had some cool gestures, such as "continuous dragging" - if i'm dragging a window and my finger get close to the border of touchpad, i could put second finger on touchpad and continue dragging. I was using it quite frequent because it is useful with multiple displays. And it was worked good. Until yesterday.
Windows has decided that it's time for update and in the morning when i turn on my laptop it started updating and after that all began falling apart. I couldn't find this gesture anymore, now when i dragging a window, if second finger touches touchpad, it stop dragging and think i'm trying to scroll, in device manager touchpad displayed as HID mouse, and after 6 hours keyboard stopped work. >.< That's why i "love" microsoft update policy.
I've made a clean install today, tried some touchpad drivers and still missing this gesture. In windows settings all touchpad settings turned on.

Does anyone know how to turn it on?
Thank you and sorry for my bad English.

I just bought an Ideapad 700 and I love everything about it until I noticed I couldn't bring up a context menu (right click, popup menu, whatever you call it where you are).  I tried for nearly 3 hours and the best I came up with was making the 3 finger double tap into the right click menu.  Uninstalling the elantech driver and using the Microsoft Windows 10 driver didn't work.  I installed the Asus driver and that actually did work for the 2 finger double tap right click, but I hate that too.  I just want normal touchpad behavior where you hit the right button area for the context menu.  Is there any way to do that behavior, or just have 2 finger single tap?  I didn't expect to pay this much for a laptop and spend hours on something this stupid.  It's almost becoming a deal-breaker for me.

I purchased a brand new Aspire E15-575G-53VG less than a week ago, and I went to the Acer website to download drivers for it to make sure everything was as it should be. I noticed that, after installing the touchpad driver (learned that I have the ELANtech touchpad, not the Synaptics one) and rebooted, there were no additional settings for the touchpad anywhere in the Mouse Properties panel. Later that day, I shut down the laptop and it installed some Windows 10 updates, and when I rebooted, I noticed the ELAN tab had suddenly appeared, however my touchpad does not show in the list of devices:Does anyone know how to address this? I would very much like to tweak a few of the settings for the touchpad, but as you can see, even after installing the driver and letting Windows Update partially fix the tab not even appearing, the device is still not listed for whatever reason. I should add this is still a very fresh machine, only used it for maybe a couple hours max, no external devices plugged in (including mice).

Greetings,

I have an Acer Aspire E 17 - ES1-711-P1UV

When I updated my OS from Windows 8 to Windows 10 I noticed that the touchpad stopped working. I connected a USB mouse to the Laptop and that allowed me to have mouse functionality.

I went to Acer's website and entered my serial number and downloaded the drivers that were under Windows 10 - 64-bit.

specifically downloaded

TouchPad ELANTECH Touchpad Driver 13.6.3.1 7.3 MB 2015/07/27

After I downloaded this I double clicked on setup and installed the software. I did not see any errors. I restarted the computer and my touchpad did not work.

I went into the system settings and viewed the Device Manager and noticed there is an Unknown Device. I installed the Unknown Device and scanned to detect new hardware/software and the Unknown Device reappeared.

My TouchPad still did not work.

I contacted Acer and their live support had me do several things and nothing happened. They escalated me to their "Supervisors" and they responded "Contact Microsoft as it sounds like it's an issue with them." and they disconnected. They have GREAT customer service *sarcasm*.

Now I'm stuck without the ability to use the touchpad on my keyboard and also the FN + F7 does not do anything either.

A:Upgraded from Windows 8 - elantech touchpad not even in Device Manager

I don't know about Acer but my Samsung netbook also sports an ELANTECH touchpad and Windows update found a driver for ELANTECH, and installed OK and seems to be fine, did you tried that?
Anyway, this touchpad was detected like a regular PS2 mouse and worked out of the box, except advanced feats like swiping, scrolling etc that worked after said update, strange yours not, maybe chipset drivers?

Hi guys, I hope someone can help me with this:

So I recently upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 and I noticed a few issues with the touchpad on my laptop.

1: two finger scrolling no longer works. Now I have to drag one finger on the right edge of the touchpad up and down in order to scroll vertically.

2: I've also noticed the blue loading circle beside the pointer keeps flashing roughly once per second whenever i leave it alone, even if I am not running any programs. I can leave it on the desktop and the blue circle still keeps flashing.

It appears Win 10 installed a new driver called ELAN Input Device. That's what it says when I go to the device manager.

However, when I go to the settings menu>devices>mouse and touchpad>additional mouse options to the mouse properties, there is no way to configure the gestures.

I found out that I have to go to the Elantech folder in program files and run the ETDAniConf application and that brings up the gesture customization menu. However, when I run the program the option for two finger scrolling, pinch zoom, etc. are checked on, as is the default. There is no option for one finger right side scrolling like I mentioned earlier. And, as I said, the blue circle keeps flashing when idle.

My laptop is a MSI GT60 running Windows 10 upgraded from 8.1 which was updated from 8.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. To sum up, ELAN is messing up my touchpad and the pointer loading circle keeps flashing when idle... Read more

Hi, I am having a problem with my touchpad and Windows 10.  It started yesterday after my computer was frozen after startup and I couldn't access the login screen, so I reset my PC and kept my files.  After resetting and getting back to the desktop I found that If I either tap on the touchpad or do a quick swipe on the touchpad, Windows Action Center will pull up every time and I have to tap or swipe again for it to go away.  I never had the problem before resetting my PC and after speaking with Microsoft they claim it is a malfunction of the touchpad.  I've been searching online and see suggestions to disable 4 finger gestures to resolve the issue, however my laptop does not have 4 finger gestures.  I have reinstalled the driver for the touchpad and still have the issue.  I'm at a loss.Anyone familiar with this issue?  It has become increasingly frustrating and I'm hoping there's a solution.  Thanks!

Is it possible to configure a synaptics touch pad settings such as sensitivity, tapping, and type lock settings without the synaptics software?

When I upgraded my laptop to Vista, my touch pad became erratic randomly clicking both left and right buttons as well as being unresponsive and/or jumping to random locations. I discovered that the issue was caused by the synaptics software. When I uninstalled the software part of the driver, the touchpad worked fine, but I can't configure it. I've tried updating to the latest software/driver from the synaptics website as well as Compaq's recommended drivers for my laptop off their website and neither worked. I've also tried on several occasions to deal with Compaq chat tech support but was unable to come up with a solution.

If anyone knows if it can be configured in the registry, or if there is a config file that can be edited, or 3rd party software, please let me know if you have any ideas!

When I went back to windows 7 the beeping stopped during boot up but the down key problem exists. I am thinking of downgrading to XP to see if the noise problem and the keyboard works. I hope its not due to my ram upgrade.

Argh. This is getting frustrating.

The "tapping" function on my Inspiron 9300's touchpad keeps getting intermittently disabled when I try to watch videos. It's very sporadic and I have, so far, been unable to determine any kind of set pattern or commonality between the times that it happens. The only thing that is for sure is that it only happens when I am attempting to watch videos. i.e., YouTube, CNN, MySpace, etc.

When it happens, I have to go to Control Panel > Mouse > Touchpad and then de-select "Tapping" (yes, it is always still selected even when apparently disabled) and then re-select it and click OK.

The left and right "mouse" buttons below the touchpad are never affected nor is the ability to move the pointer around the screen using the touchpad.

Help? Thanks!

EDITED TO ADD: I should have mentioned that I did uninstall the driver and reinstall an updated one from Dell directly. Also, I just discovered today that I actually don't have to deselect the tapping tick-box and then reselect it as I originally thought. All I have to do is open up the Mouse Properties under the Control Panel and simply click OK to close it again. Works every time.

BUT, why is this happening???

I want to disable the touchpad.  The double-tap doesn't work.  There is no icon for the touchpad in the taskbar.  When I click on Control Panel/Mouse, there is no device manager tab.  When I go into the device manager itself, there's one entry for Synaptics SMBus Driver, which appears to be the only entry which deals with Synaptics, which is what I assume my touchpad is.  There is an option for disable device; it has no effect on the touchpad.  Under "mouse and other pointing devices," there are two entried:  HID-compliant mouse, and PS/2 compatible mouse.  Neither of them has a tab which would allow me to disable the touchpad. What am I doing wrong?

A:Touchpad disabling

It seems like a bit of a bug in the program for the control panel, this often happens when companies create their own software for this.
try this, go to windows update, see if there's an update for your touch pad or mice drivers (I say this because microsoft has a faster download) if its not there try the asus website, not there I suggest a system restore (but that's going a bit far) login as another user with administrative privelages see if its there.

On other devices I could access the Synaptics settings and disable palm tracking, however on this laptop there's only a button pointing to the Windows 10 settings. I've set the touchpad to always on but it's still disabled while typing. How can I change this behaviour? Also, not really as important, but where do I disable the mouse continiuing when reaching the edge of the touchpad and holding down the mouse button?

I have a Compaq Laptop and have gotten spoiled by the button just above the Touchpad that allows me to turn the Touchpad off. Now, I have this one and I really need to know how to disable this one. It is so close to the spacebar that my thumb just touches it and it jumps up to wherever the cursor is. Personally, I think that is a stupid design that allows it to move just by tapping the touchpad without hitting the left button. But I have learned the last few years that stupidity is something that Microsoft and Dell seem to be majoring in nowadays. After 3 Dells, this will be my last. And my next one with have XP and not Vista and W7. I have both of them and they are junk!!
WHEW! That felt good!! I just had to get that off my chest!! Thanks for any help on the disabling question. I would think that it should take just a push of a couple of buttons that the ones they have at the top row, where you can connect or disconnect from your wireless or you volume or mute. That would be a good idea to put a button for the touchpad up there as well, but I guess that Dell didn't think that was important!! SORRY!! Just venting. But, I must say and then close, Dell is not the company it was 10 years ago!!!

A:Disabling the Touchpad on my Inspiron 1545

Go to Control Panel
Find Mouse (might have to change to View by Small icons)
Click Mouse
In Mouse Properties Select Dell Touchpad
Click Big Arrow
Click Device Select (top left)
On the bottom of page tick: “Disable Touchpad / Pointing Stick when external USB mouse is present”

Hope this helps

I just received a hand-me-down Compaq Armada E500 S, and I use an external mouse.

Could someone please tell me there's a way to disable the touchpad while the external mouse is connected? It is so frustrating accidentally hitting the touchpad and sending the cursor randomly all over the screen while typing.

Thanks greatly...

I just recently swapped my old HDD with brand new SSD and did a clean instal of Win 7 home preamium 64 bit. After I downloaded synaptics v17.0.19 (appears as Synaptics PS/2 Port TouchPad in Device manager) straight from Synaptics homepage, I noticed that that most of the gestures work, BUT the orange LED that indicates a disabled touchpad, is glowing when the touchpad is actually on. I disabled the touchpad from settings and the LED turned off. The double tapping in the upper left corner does not work either. In Mouse properties -> device settings -> Synaptics LuxPad V7.5 settings -> Tapping I can only configure tap zones in each corner of the touchpad, but not enable the upper left side double tapping which should disable/enable the touchpad. Does anyone have any idea why is the LED on in vice versa situations and why doesn't the double tapping trick work?  I have tried uninstalling the driver, but no luck.

You didn't say if your Dell Inspiron 1520 is running Windows XP or Windows Vista or Windows 7.

All 3 operating systems have a Mouse entry in the Control Panel.

The mouse properties window should have a setting for disabling the touchpad.

I have a Lenovo G570 laptop (Win7 64 bit) with a Synaptics touchpad I would like to permanently disable or disable when a USB mouse is plugged in. This machine doesn't have a switch to turn off the touchpad and I never remember to hit Fn/F6 until I screw up my typing because I dragged my thumb over the stupid touchpad. I've tried programs that briefly shut off the touchpad when a key is pressed but they didn't work for two reasons: one, I often brush the touchpad before I hit a key, and, two, my USB mouse also temporarily shuts off.

The only selection in the driver is to permanently turn it off but when I select that, I get a popup saying, "You are about to disable the only active Synaptics pointing device." That makes me doubly nervous since programs that shut off the touchpad also affect the mouse and I?m afraid that if the touchpad is permanently turned off at the driver, it will also permanently shut off the mouse, effectively bricking my laptop. Any suggestions?

How to disable the touchpad automatically when a USB mouse is plugged in?

A:Disabling The TouchPad Automatically When USB Mouse Is Plugged In

The setting to disable a touchpad when a mouse is connected is typically provided by the touchpad driver. For example the
Disable when external USB pointing device plug in setting for Elan Touchpads or the
Disable internal pointing device when external USB pointing device is attached setting for Synaptics.
