Can't connect to the internet, 3rd BRAND NEW computer that work connect! HELP!

Q: Can't connect to the internet, 3rd BRAND NEW computer that work connect! HELP!

I bought a new Dell computer and then got another brand new dell that they replaced for free because they thought something was wrong with it. I returned that one and bought a brand new HP that i still have currently, all have/had Windows VISTA...

After being on the phone for hours and hours with Microsoft, Comcast and Dell, there still hasnt been anyone that can resolve the issues...

I have a Motorola modem thats connect by ethernet cable to a D-Link wireless router, but is only used as a medium to connect multiple computers to that motorola router through ethernet cables.

The connection is good given that i'm typing from my old computer with Windows XP. Plug and play and the internet works no issues.

Can this be an issue with the Modem or D-link router? Ethenet Cable? I can not think of anything else and with the Dell computer(s), microsoft and dell tried everything physically possible to try to un-install Vista, do this and do that with everything. Comcast did say that all their modems are Vista friendly and i even tried directly plugging the ethernet cable from the modem to the computer, bypassing the router and that didnt work. One comment that was made was that i had a bad IP address, which they tried to fix and that didnt work either. Please someone help me! Or im going to have to go with a brand new computer that has XP and not Vista. THANKS!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was recently given a computer from my workplace. I took this computer home, and put it in the place of my old one. The internet connection on my old computer has always been fine; all cables are connected correctly. However, this computer from work will not connect to the internet. The icon in the bottom right corner of the screen states that I am connected, but the internet browser claims that it is unable to display web pages.

May the cause of this be related to any unique computer settings that a workplace may have on a computer in their network? Other computers have no problem connecting to the internet through the same, wired connection. The OS is Windows XP Professional.

Is it getting an address by DHCP? Do the results of ipconfig /all look normal?

I recently received a computer from where I work as a gift; they were going to throw it out because they got new ones. This computer was part of the network, and upon startup required you to provide a username and password as well as select the domain. I know the username and password, so I can log on. However, I cannot receive an internet connection when I connect it to the internet at my home. The icon at the bottom right of the task bar states that I am connected to the local area connection, but my internet browsers claim that they cannot connect to the internet. Does this have something to do with the network domains on the computer?

Is there a way to resolve this? It runs Windows XP Professional. Thank you for your time.

I have a working internet connection on all other non-work computers that I connect.
All wires and plugs are intact and as they should be.

Hi sceastman and welcome to TSF

Can you do:

Windows Key+R and type cmd and hit Enter. Now type ipconfig/all and hit Enter. Now all the information has been gathered, right click in the command Prompts window and choose Select All. Now press CTRL+C. Open up Notepad and press CTRL+V. Save that .txt file and attach it to your next post.

Can you also let us know the make and model of your router at home.

It is probably the setting for the network adapter on the new computer having a static DNS entry from your workplace. Look at the TCP/IP settings for your network adapter in Control Panel.

This is an XP pro machine and after it failed to connect I have also re-installed XP.
It cannot ping the linksys router and connect to the LAN/ internet.
I have tried comparing TCP/IP settings, checked off windows firewall , compared with other computers on the LAN, checked the cables, assigned working IP's to it to see if that helps etc.

If I bring it home and change the TCP/IP settings to match my home router, it works flawlessly.
I have also completely formatted and reinstalled XP.
What else can I try?
Appreciate any input. Thanks!

i got a toshiba satellite l305d with windows vista home premium on it, and i have tried every trick in the book for about 2 days now to get it to connect to the wireless and it wont connect or it will connect and say "local only" which is a big inconvenience because im going to be using this laptop for college. i called some techies and they said it could be a software issue but idk because i dont have the money to get it checked out. i have tried everything to get it to work, regedit, resseting the router (unplugging and setup) een tried making my own wireless network so i can get it to pick up. i bought a $50 usb wireless adapter to see if it would work, and it still says "local only" so yea, im kinda mad about the whole ordeal lol, but if you can e-mail me with answers or something please.

A:brand new laptop wont connect to internet...

Hi Mark,

You will have to read about it here. I certainly do not email. Make the effort, we are all volunteers and are not here for your convenience.

Have you set up the router for wifi? Does it have the password set? What security protocol is it set for? Your broadband provider or modem manufacturer should be able to help you first set up that box.

Once that is OK, we can go from there.

I have a brand new Sony Vaio laptop running Vista home. I have a hardwired broadband network. I'm sure my network is not the problem as I've tested it using other computers.

I ran through the laptops initial setup and everything went smoothly.

I'm using an ethernet cable (tested-working) to this new Vaio and it will not connect. The Marvel Yukon Ethernet adapter is what I'm using.

Here is what I'm looking at:

I've performed all of the self repair functions, but still nothing.

I should simply be able to plug in an ethernet cable and have it connect! This is why I'm an Apple person! This is so frustrating. This would never happen on a Mac.

Please advise.

I just bought a brand-new Dell Inspiron 1545. I started the computer, finished the registration and connected to my home wireless networking system. The Dell has Vista OS pre-loaded on it and it showed full connectivity to my internet system. However, once I clicked on Internet Explorer, the page would not load and I could surf to other pages. Thinking it was an Internet Explorer issue, I tried Firefox. Firefox allowed me to go to Google, but nothing else. I spent about an hour on the phone with Dell, who informed me that there have been some configuration problems between Vista, McAfee and Internet Explorer, but they wanted to charge me $250 for a one year software warranty (apparently my warranty is only hardware). I uninstalled the free 30-day trial McAfee but could not still surf the web. I've tried ipconfig as well as other online hints but nothing's worked. I was wondering if anyone else has run into this problem. I'm pretty close to just returning the Dell to the store and looking for another brand. Thanks in advance!

A:Brand New Dell Inspiron 1545 Won't Connect to Internet

Yes, I can connect using an Ethernet cord. The Comcast technical website (our home internet provider) shows that my computer is connected via Ethernet and wirelessly, but I still can only surf the web when I'm connected with an Ethernet cord.

Howdy all,

The amazing folks at Tech Spot saved my bacon many moons back, helping me fix a virus laden laptop for my sick kid. And so I turn to you with my latest computer nightmare and beg of your assistance once again!

I just bought a new HP ENVY TouchSmart 17t-j100 Quad Edition Notebook PC (ENERGY STAR) for my daughter for Christmas. It arrived yesterday and I opened it up, to start preloading her software onto it so she can have it ready to go Christmas morning.

Unfortunately, the thing just won't let me get connected to the internet via wifi!

It is using an Intel Wireless-N 7260 adapter, running Windows 8.1 (factory installed). I have tried everything I could think of - using Intel drivers instead of Microsoft ones, resetting WINSOCK, flushing the DNS, using a static IP instead of dynamic, the works. Nothing appears to be working. The device can clearly see my network - it shows up on the list of connections, and validates my security information (running standard WEP security - not the best I know but it's easier for the multitude of tech I have on my network, all of which connects fine), but it only gives me limited access and does not want to connect to the network or the internet.

My base system is running Windows 7. My router is a Netgear Rangemax Wireless-N Gigabit Router WNR3500 v2.

I have not tried a hardwire connection yet, as I really need this to be a wireless device.

Help me, TechSpot Gurus....you're my only hope!

So most of my family works on laptops, but i have one old desktop that i haven't turned on in a while, but now I need to get it back connected to the internet for a bit.

I have a network cable running to it (most of my comps run on wireless but this one doesn't have a wireless card), and it connects to the network, but gives me the "limited to no activity" message. Last time I turned it off (a few months ago) it worked fine)

Troubleshooting so far (after rebooting/powercycling everything, of course)
1. connected the network cable to my laptop, after disconnecting the wireless. worked fine.
2. Tried "repair", could not renew
3. tried release/renew, error on renew "unable to contact your DHCP server.
4. tried DNS flush
5. did netsh dump

A:please help brand new laptop can't connect to internet due to fake antivirus protaction

Rebecca, try booting into "Safe Mode with Networking" by tapping "F8" while the system is booting. Then see if you can connect to the web. If you can, you need to download Malwarebytes - Update it - and run a quick scan. If you can't get to the web try downloading it on another computer and moving it to your laptop with a flash drive. Also you can try doing a system restore and go back a few days. Good luck.

I just bought this laptop about 10 days ago to use specifically for a writing project separate from my other work laptop. It has Windows 7. It had Google Chrome installed (or maybe my brother installed it upon taking it out of the box.) I have
used IE as my browser on this laptop once or twice, but mostly use Google Chrome. I downloaded some genealogy software I just bought today about an hour or so ago (Family Tree Maker 2012) and noticed that it would not connect to the internet to register- it
kept saying "No internet connection". After trying a few things (allowing the program access through Windows Firewall, checking to make sure that "proxy server" tab was not checked in Internet Settings, disabling some Bing Maps and Windows
Live email accelerators) and finally tried closing Chrome and opening IE to run in background instead. However, IE won't connect - keeps saying "Cant display webpage" although I am definitely connected to internet via wifi. I tried resetting Internet
Explorer...no dice. I've restarted several times. Nothing is working. Any suggestions?
My husband thinks i should uninstall Chrome, which he guesses is causing all the trouble with both IE and the Family Tree software. But I'm afraid that if I uninstall Chrome and it doesnt work, i wont be able to get back on the internet since I can presently
only do so through Chrome.

A:IE won't connect to internet, but Chrome is working fine. Other software wont connect to internet either.

Uninstalling Chrome should not be nessesary it does have an agressive default install which should not be used but uninstalling will not fix any issues because chromes uninstall will not change
setting back the way they were before you installed it/ or who ever.
Reset ie9 manually,
Click the Start button on the Taskbar,
Click on Control panel,
Click on Internet options,
Go to the Advanced section,
Click on Reset button on the bottom,
Check the box to Delete personal settings,
Use the recommended setup and install options.
Also see this,
New computers come with pre-installed security suites/ Trial versions,
The best thing to do with these trial versions is to Uninstall them,
Use these instead,
Freebie from microsoft,
If money isn't an issue add the full pro version of malwarebytes, less than mcafee or norton,

Then use the free version of this as well for even more ways to clean your machine,

Hi there,

We have an IT person at our workplace but alas he is part time - actually we're lucky to see him once a week. The other day he patched a connection for me to hook up my laptop to the LAN with a cable. Today when I tried to use it, I found that although I was connected, I cannot use any browsers to connect to the internet. Skype works :S , msn is blocked as expected but I really need firefox or ie to work. I pinged www.google.com and received all the packets back. I've even tried flushing the DNS and renewing the ip address, but still no luck. I don't think he would have blocked browsers from accessing the internet as reading online journals is a big part of my job.

Does anyone have any suggestions I can try or does it look like I will have to wait till he comes back in next week? Mind you, it does give me a great excuse not to work :)

A:cannot connect to internet at work

Sounds like your IT guy has blocked Browser connections at the server. Or has not given you access permission via the new patced in cable. Being a laptop can you hook up to another station and see if you can use your Browsers. Maybe the IT guy has set the server to a specific browser. See if others in the office can get online using Firefox or IE.

Okay so here is the situation. Our IT guy is on vacation until next week so here i am trying to fix a problem that i hope is simple but i just cant see. I have a small network of at tops 8 comps. We are in the process of updating em but some of them run 98, windows server 2000 and xp. Everything was working fine until someone unplugged the "server comp". I have released renewed ip on modem, I have shut down the whole system and brought it back up(not working). I really am not too sure what to do...any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A:Can connect one comp to internet but cant get it to work over lan...

Would need a lot more info!

What exactly is not working? File-sharing access between the computers? Internet access? Both?

Do you have any connectivity between computers? Can you ping between computers?

Is the network connected via a router? Is it a DHCP server to the sub-net? Or is the "server comp" the DHCP server to the sub-net?

Look at the IP configs (I assume you are using TCP/IP as you talk about releasing/renewing) on the boxes using ipconfig/all. Do you get understandable results? If not what are you getting?

Are you on a cable modem, DSL modem or dial-up modem?

hello ! Recently my uncle redid my other laptop to its original, out-of-the-box state due to slowness. Afterwards, when my father plugged in the ethernet cable of Motorola's SBV5120 SURFboard Cable Modem (we use the optimum service) into the computer, the computer icon at the bottom right of the screen indicated that the network was unidentified and has only local connections---therefore no internet. On the laptop I'm on right now, the network is correctly recognized and has both local AND internet connections.
Why is that ?
I concluded that since the other laptop is "redone" then I must reinstall the installation cd of the modem... and I did, today.
All went well in the installation process until the near end where the cd automatically checked to see how the connection was (btw the comp and modem). It resulted with an error stating something like that invalid or something (I forgot).
Thus, my installation attempts of the modem on the other laptop failed.
I tried to reboot both the comp and modem but still failed.
I don't understand. Why is there limited connectivity?
I don't even have perfect wireless connectivity. I mean, both of my laptops have the wireless capability and I can go around the house with the working one and find linkys with one bar of signal. But I don't have the wireless modem or something that gives stable wireless connectivity to either of them---only the motorola modem that gives internet to only 1 of the 2 right no... Read more

A:P L E A S E H E L P ! internet does not work even when I connect the ethernet cable

You want to first establish a connection from the laptop to the Motorola modem, with the Linksys router out of the loop. Is the laptop running Windows Vista or XP? When you go to Network Connections or Network and Sharing Center, do you see a LAN?

If you are connecting via an ethernet cord to a cable modem, then you would not need to install any modem. The disk you have for your Motorola modem may be for installing USB drivers in case you were using a USB cable.

If its only giving you broadband connection it could indicate an issue with your wireless card. Check to make sure it is showing in the device manager. If its not in the Dev Mgr its failed and you need to replace it.

Just got off the phone with Verizon. They had me push the reset button and I was able to connect to the internet again. I mentioned how slow it takes for pages to load. She said the Verizon router has a firewall but it's a low security. So I went on the internet was able to get on some sites, but then others wouldn't connect again, said there is no internet connection. All the lights on the router are on. So far it's still working, but this is what happened before when I lost my connection completely.

A:Wireless Network Connection will only connect to Internet if Lcl Area Connect disable

sounds about right! Your big issue will be the VPN, as it is frequently specifically
config'd to use a specific adaptor AND to force all tcp traffic thru that connection,
even though you want to do some trivial google.com search.

Consider using a Hardware Profile to define
1) a LAN connection environment (ie no WiFi)
2) a WiFi environment (w/o a LAN)

the choice occurs at boot time and the hardware is enabled/disabled per
the profile.

Hello guys,

I have just finished my very first computer build and am rather happy with most things.

Unfortunately I am having problems connecting to the internet.

I have a temporary dongle in place and because it's my only option for about a month I kinda need it to work.

When I first connected it I found my connection and I successfully connected, I downloaded Google Chrome and Steam, then unfortunately it randomly stopped working.

Where the strength bar should of been, there was a large red cross, when I found my connection it read "The settings saved on this computer for the network do not match the requirements of the network." I Googled this and people said delete your connection and reconnect, that didn't work, so then I tried to set my security type to something different or off as recommended in a solved post, the problem persisted.

Now after restarting my computer several times it sometimes rejects my password, or comes up with the "the settings for the network..." and on rare occasions it connects then 5 minutes later comes up wit my original problem.

I have tried resetting my connection details as what is saved on my laptop and mac and they don't work either.

Any help greatly appreciated.

Regards, Lee.

Hello everyone.

I would like to connect to the internet using my Linksys WRT54GS 1.1 router. However, even after I reset the router by pressing the reset button for 30 seconds, and plug the ethernet from the cable modem to the router, I can get only to the (Setup) page, not to any internet.

The same cord and cable modem work with my Airport Express, but I want my WRT54GS router to connect wired to the modem, so I can use my AirPort to extend the network (i.e. I want two hotspots).

Any help?

I have a lenovo u160 running windows 7, a couple of days ago it seemed my computer was infected with something, giving a series of security warnings I had not seen before (not av security suite). It slowed the computer down for a few minutes.

After closing these messages, there seemed to be no problem, but then my computer was no longer connect to the internet. It connects to our router/wireless network, but not to the internet.

I tried resetting and unplugging the router and the modem, but still no luck. We have two other computers on the same network that are connecting to both the network and the internet.

I tried running rkill and malwarebytes twice and no malicious items were detected.

I restored the computer to an earlier point (2-3 days earlier)

On the toolbar in the bottom right of the taskbar, it shows a 5 white signal bars, with a "!" inside a yellow triangle.
If I click on the network button it states it is "connected" to the network. It describes the connection as "excellent" (4-5/5 bars).

Above the display of the available networks, it states

"currently connected to:
Unidentified network
No Internet access"

I am not computer savvy and have not run into this problem before. Thanks for your time and help.

I'm interested in accessing my home network from my office through the Internet. I'm assuming that this can be done, but I am not exactly sure how.

My home server is a Win 2K Advanced Server and I have 2 Win 2K Clients.

I'm accessing through a network at my office that is running through a proxy server. Is that going to cause a problem?

Do I just need to setup a VPN or is there more involved?

The simplest way is to use PCanywhere. It's agreat software program, it actually show yu your home computer from a remote location....desktop and all. It costs about $150 though.

Can someone out there tell me how I can connect my home computer to my work computer 14 miles away? I tried pcAnywhere and can connect but I can not print things from my work computer on my home printer. Seems the new HP K80 all-in-one I bought does not support remote printing. HP does not support pcAnywhere either. So how can I do it another way? I am desperate. My husband has a brain tumor and may have to have surgery and I want to connect to my work computer so I can at least keep some money coming in during this time. Is there anyway to do this without alot of cost. My employer will pay for it if it is not to costly.

I have just rebuilt a laptop for a friend. I downloaded the latest drivers for the wireless connection from Acer website. They have installed correctly.

I can connect the laptop to the router by wireless and I can browse the local network and see the other PC's BUT the internet is shown as not connected. Windows 7 Home Premium 64Bit. Other wireless devices (iPad for instance connect to the internet fine).

I have re-booted the router.

Anyone got any ideas?

My browser is IE8. Window XP Home with SP2 (Sony VAIO Desktop PCV-RS420, Pentium-4, 2.8 Ghz, 512MB Ram). I am now unable to connect to the Internet. The network diagnostic for window XP kept saying to check firewall settings for HTTP(port 80), HTTPS(port 443), and FTP (port 21).  I don't know how to do that. I open the Window firewall settings on the Security Center page (Exception tab), it lists programs and services on the "Exception", ie, to not block incoming network connection from these programs or services, which include "Internet Explorer",on the list, which seems to be appropriate.  But my computer still will not connect to the Internet--very frustrating.  I  have done "System Restore" a few times to an earlier dates, thinking maybe the computer picked up some virus and the System restore function should temporarily resolve that issue.  But still no luck.   Finally, I tried connecting to a secured website with "HTTPS" in the address bar and the computer appeared to be successful to connect to these HTTPS sites, but it continued to refuse to connect to a regular website(i.e. with "HTTP" in its address bar).  Please help me resove these internet connection issues I would vey much appreciate.

A:Internet Explorer will not connect to HTTP, but will connect to HTTPS

<<My browser is IE8. Window XP Home with SP2...>>
May have nothing to do with your problem...but you really need to install SP3 and all critical updates since its issuance...that may take care of your problem, but even if it doesn't...your system will be less vulnerable.
Installing or reinstalling SP3... has been known to overcome various previous system problems.
Sounds to me like corruption affecting non-secure websites, so you may also want to reinstall IE8.

Hi there, I'm having a bit of an issue with one of my computers. It's fairly new, running on Windows Vista.

I am able to connect to a wireless router (Belkin), but I am not able to connect to the internet on this one particular computer. Another desktop computer on the network is able to access the internet. I just get the error "Internet Explorer cannot display the page" on the laptop whenever I attempt to open IE.
I've read through quite a few similar problems on other sites, but have yielded no solution. Any suggestions?

Try checking out your router setup it may be blocking those programs. You may need to login to the router and "enable" the programs as I notice they are P2P programs and quite often you have to permit their use. Try googling for "enabling p2p on my xxxx router" where xxxx is the make / model number

Atheros AR5007EG Click to expand...

this is a problem adapter on vista whenever a change is made

Have a read through the following - the most common fix is the driver update - from the manufacturers website or from the atheros website

Atheros Wireless Adapter - AR5007EG & AR5007

Over the last couple of years we have been seeing a lot of problems with the above adapters, mainly concerning WPA and WPA2 encryption and mainly on windows Vista.
We have seen just a couple of issues on other windows operating system, windows XP and windows 7.

Windows XP:- A driver update has resolved the issue
Windows 7 :- No conclusive results for a fix

The wireless adapter gets an IP configuration, and shows as connected, but communication is non-existent or sporadic.

Log into the Router and disable the wireless security and see if you are now able to connect to the internet and surf OK.
Please post back a reply here, and let us know if that works or does not work.
If you post back the make and exact model of the router - we can advise how to disable the wireless security

The majority of fixes are via installing a new driver from either the Manufacturers website and if that does not resolve the issue then from the atheros web site - see item (3)

Here are a number of possible solutions

--- 1) In Device Manager right click on the wireless adapter and "update driver."

--- 2) Download and install th... Read more

post an ipconfig /all and xirrus screen shot
ipconfig /all
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to paste the results into something like notepad and then copy onto a machine that can access the internet and post the results in a reply here.
Save the file to a USB flash drive or other removable media. Plug it into the working computer with internet access and copy the file and paste here.

We would like to see the results from an ipconfig /all - post back the results in a reply here.

Hold the Windows key and press R, then type CMD then press Enter to open a command prompt box

In the command prompt window that opens, type the following command:

Note that there is a space before the /ALL, but there is NOT a space after the / in the following command.

ipconfig /all > network.txt & network.txt

It will export the results into notepad and then automatically open the notepad and display on your screen.

Now all you need to do is copy and paste those results into a reply here
to do that:
From the notepad menu - choose Edit - Select all

In a nutshell, it looks my parents' computer is able to get wifi connection and is connected to the "internet" but none of the browsers work, e.g. IE and Chrome, thus we can't actually get online. I am posting from another computer and have followed your guide by downloading DDS, etc and transferring program(s)/document(s) via a flash drive.
My mom tried to download some sort of accounting software guide/tutorial onto her computer. In the middle of the download, I saw that she was actually downloading quite a bit of "other" stuff including some games and other browsers and search engines, so we were able to stop some of the downloads midway. I went in and uninstalled and deleted the programs that came in that day that didn't seem familiar.
Unfortunately, after doing that the browsers stopped working and have the error message: (Chrome) Unable to connect to proxy server and (IE) The proxy server isn't responding; check your proxy settings
This is just a home computer and I am not aware of any proxy servers that we set up here. I tried to follow their instructions to try and fix the problem and Go to Tools> Internet Options > Connections and go to LAN settings and UNCHECK the proxy server box. Unfortunately, every time I uncheck the box, it is immediately rechecked when I open it again.
I did find another thread where someone had a similar problem. We tried to download some programs and follow the instructions exactly. It worked... Read more

I am trying to access a Windows Workgroup from a MacBook Pro. I created a Workgroup and I can see it from the Mac. However, when I try to connect to the Windows desktop from the Mac, it asks for a connection password. I didn't setup a password for the Workgroup and I don't think the Windows desktop has a password. I'm not sure how to override it or even go back and setup one so I can give it to other computers.

I can't seem to get through this hurdle. Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

From the PC where you have the problem accessing from MAC.
Control Panel->Network and Sharing Center->Change Advanced Sharing Settings. Scroll down to the bottom and click on All Networks then click on "Turn off password protected sharing". Click on Save changes.

Hi I need a little assistance. I am on a dell laptop running Windows XP Pro SP2. This is my mothers laptop and I have no clue what she did with it. OK, so I have an IP address, connected to Wireless network, can ping DNS Server, DHCP server, and Default Gateway. Tried the Winsock reset and the int ip reset. Also IPconfig release and renew. Haven't gone into the registry yet (Kinda nervous don't wanna mess anything else up. Need specific instructions). Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers (found online). Ran into a whole different set of problems and error messages, but I've gotten all those resolved already. I connected a LAN line with still no luck. I even installed Firefox. With all that done it still won't connect to the internet. I've used up all my tech savvy\expertise and I'm at a lost. Anything else you can think of that I can try? Thanks in advance

Hi everyone.

I have a desktop PC that connects to the internet with an ethernet cable through charter dsl. I have my friends dell laptop here and need to connect to the internet but when I take the plug out of my ethernet and put it into the back of the laptop it doesn't allow me to connect to the internet. Does anyone know how I can setup the laptop to allow me to connect to the internet using my dsl connection? I only need it to do it for right now.

A:Setup Laptop to connect to internet using dsl connect

IS the DSL box limiting MAC addresses of computers that can connect?
If so you need to add friend's MAC address.
After connecting the laptop did you reboot?
Chances are it will automatically sort itself out after the reboot.
If not, open Network connections Start > Settings > Network Connections,
Fnd the connection that you think should work (the same as on your computer),
Click Properties,
On General tab look for one of the last items, "Internet protocol TCP/IP"
Click on it
Click Properties
It might have a fixed IP address, so change it to Obtain IP automatically
Do the same for the DNS, or do whatever is on your computer.
OK few times and wait a bit. It might work.
If not, post some detail so that someone can help.

You can also post information from ipconfig:
Start > Run, type cmd
on the black screen type ipconfig /all and hit enter
copy the text and paste here

Finally, in the same cmd window try this
ipconfig /release
it will clear the current IP and make it
then type ipconfig /renew
in order to get a new IP. I don't think it will work if your earlier attempts failed though.
