Error during restore. "An unspecified error occurred during system.."

Q: Error during restore. "An unspecified error occurred during system.."

"an unspecified error occurred during system restore (0x8000ffff)"

I made a restore disk on my 64bit win7 desktop for my 64bit win7 laptop because windows stopped loading. Now when I try different restore points I get the same problem. Should I make a new disk? What else could I try?

Post about original problem

I have a normal stock dell desktop with windows 7.

I borrowed my grandmothers laptop. It is an Acer Aspire 5736Z-4790 w/ an Intel Processor. Last night after trying to install some files to make some cheat programs I use for an online game (I have loaded same programs 10x on other computers so I doubt its related to the programs themselves) One thing I did do was try to delete a winhttp.dll file in system32 or the WOW one(for 64bit computers? Forget the folders name) and replace it with another one(Directions for the cheats said to make sure that winhttp.dll was in sys32) and while trying to do that windows would not let me so I read somewere that there is a program that lets you "take ownership of a file" so you can override permissions. I then took ownership of sys32 and maybe the 64bit folder as well. It still did not let me replace any files in sys32 so I then restarted and when windows opened again, desktop loaded then an error message came up, then it restarted itself, and repeated, but after the second time it restarted itself windows would not load. After the Acer manufacture screen, just the blank black screen with the blinking line.

I have tried everything, cant seem to figure out how to even get it to open in safe mode. Only thing I can think of would be to use the restore disk which I dont have. Is there a way to legally make a restore disk on another PC to be used on the broken laptop? And does anyone have any ideas as to what could be wrong from the info I provided?

Preferred Solution: Error during restore. "An unspecified error occurred during system.."

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

CHKDSK, run either by scheduled during restart, or in Safe Mode Command Line, or from a separate USB boot disk, all show the exact same allegedly "fixed" errors over and over again. They never actually get fixed!

Also, on 4 out of 7 different disk drives -- including two Samsung SSDs which "SSD Life Pro" says are in excellent condition and will last at least 8 more years -- keep reporting an error I've never seen before:

An unspecified error occurred (766f6c756d652e63 461).
Fortunately, the 64-bit Windows 7 Pro boot disk never shows an error, but I get these repeated and allegedly "fixed" CHKDSK errors, for example, when I'm trying to clone my system partition to any of a few different disk drives and before the cloning can complete I get one or more CHKDSK errors - even though there are no CHKDSK errors from the source disk/partition!

I've checked and re-checked for rootkits and other malware using MBAM and Avira Pro, and no problems are ever reported. I've exhaustively checked the RAM using MemTest86 v7.01 for 20 passes each over two days, and again, no problems are reported.

These inexplicable errors are driving me nuts! And it's seems extremely unlikely that these are any sort of common problems, so I need some creative thinking, please. I thought maybe a PSU problem, but it's a 2-3 year old Corsair 850 and I'm not using anywhere near 850 watts. Also, the mobo and disk temps are typical and even on the low side a b... Read more

I started a chkdsk on a Win7 64bit computer that got stuck at startup repair. Before that though, I was looking around, the damage seems to be the windows files got messed up after an update. My computer data was intact when I looked around booted through a recovery cd and I checked again via a ubuntu live cd. My question is that the chkdsk d: /f apparently stopped in the middle and gave the following message:

An unspecified error occurred <6672732e637878>
Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 50

What does that mean? Is it terrible? I just restarted the chkdsk anyway and as of now, it is finding less unreadable segments, but is there a risk of data loss?

A:chkdsk - "An unspecified error occurred <6672732e637878>"

Also before this, I attempted to sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=d:\windows and sfc /scannow when the first command didn't work. I also tried following the instructions here (Startup Repair Infinite Loop Recovery) but the numbers were off in SAM and one other one, Default I think.

If the chkdsk doesn't work, would the only option be a clean sweep? and is there a way that I can get a list of programs that I have saved on my computer (like how I could retrieve documents from Copy & Paste - in Windows Recovery Console

Edit: Looking some more in the forums, my list of actions most closely resemble the advice of this thread SFC error - Windows Resource Protection could not perform...

I saw a few old posts about this same topic, but none quite fit my situation so I'm starting a new post to request help/suggestions. Sorry for the length, but the instructions say to be as detailed as possible.

My System: I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium 64bit on an HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC.

MY PRIMARY PROBLEM: Inability to do a System Restore after multiple attempts using various restore points.

First, I'm including what predicated my original attempt to do a system restore. While working on my computer on Sunday evening, some sort of error message popped up, but it disappeared before I really saw what it said. However, the result was that when I next switched to IE8, it wasn't working properly. I seem to recall it saying something about "i.exe" in the original quick message that disappeared on me & later saw something about missing java script, but this was before I knew I had a big problem so I didn't actually note the details.

My first step at resolving this was my standard one - Shutdown & Restart. When I did this, I stepped away from the computer & came back to see that it was doing a disk check. As it does this from time to time for no apparent reason, I wasn't too worried. However, when the system came back online, there were several obvious issues including.
My background picture changed back to some sort of default & all of my desktop icons were rearranged to sort of a standard setup. The items that ... Read more

A:Unspecified Error Occurred During System Restore

Hello Suzyc!

Excellent work on your post! It is very rare for someone to make so much effort, and it makes so much of a different to us!

I have seen similar issues to these before. All slightly different, but I know of a few things to check out.

1) Click on the Start Orb > Computer > C:\ > Users

You must do it through My Computer please, as instructed. Do you see two copies of your Account Name. For example, if this were me:

All Users
Default User

^ Two of my name. Tell me if this is the case on your computer.

I doubt this will be the case.

Go into your Account Folder (Richard for me)

Are there two Document folders, two Downloads folders, etc. etc.

If there are, go into each one in turn. One will contain your actual data, one will contain the data of a new computer. Delete the ones which come from a new computer, leaving only the ones with your data in them.

Log off and back on again.

2) Norton is not the only program to do this. What anti-malware tools do you have. McAfee, MSE, ESET, Spybot S+D with Tea Timer, Webroot

The two in bold have a far worse reputation of causing this problem than Norton does. I need to know if you have either of these two programs installed.

3) Are you backups disconnected and safe?

4) I need to take two logs. The first log will help me diagnose your System Restore issue, your SFC result, and other lurking problems.

Please navigate to C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\ and copy CBS.log to your Desktop. Rig... Read more

When I try to access local drives in an RDP session from one Windows 7 Professional machine to another Windows 7 Professional machine the "net use u: \\tsclient\c" command receives:
"System error 87 has occurred."
"The parameter is incorrect."

When I try to access the same local drives in a RDP session with an Amazon cloud machine running Windows Server 2008 there is no problem, the net use succeeds. So I know the client machine is configured correctly. I am believe this was working on these same machines in Nov 2013. Coincidentally the Win 7 machines will no longer rdp if the server machine is on a Wifi network, only a cabled one. On Wifi, the RDP session fails to fully connect (it establishes a partial connection.) I can live without Wifi connections. It is probably irrelevant to the problem I'm trying to solve.

I have scoured the internet unsuccessfully for a solution.

Any suggestions?

I have windows 7 Dell pc and i seem to have did something bad.
I completely messed up my account.

First, I went to 'lusrmgr.msc' in CMD and I disabled the adminstrator account.
Then after that i went to my own account and changed "member of" settings by removing "group" and 'admistrator'
and added in "users" instead.

I restarted my pc and from this time onwards I am unable to access anything from:

exe files,
msconfig, in CMD TO restart in safe mode to add admistrator back

local group settings, or pretty muchmost permissions,,

i get a

"System error 5 has occurred. Access is denied"

when i run CMD to:

net user administrator /active:yes
( I ran it in elevated command prompt)

I even tried changing my account type by going to in start menu, and nothing happens after i click, it stays in 'standard'
Nothing works, any tips?

by the way, my pc has no F8, to boot into safe mode,

it has *F12*

I have a RemoteApp server setup (Windows 2012 R2) with SSO enabled. This RemoteApp server is for internal use only. I have no issues with any of my clients running Windows 7 or above. On Windows XP however, I can only connect to the RemoteApp session once
and then I get the error An authentication error has occurred (Code: 0xc00002fd). If I reboot the PC, it will again work once and then get the error.
The other thing we discovered is that when you first close the RemoteApp session, the mtsc.exe process remains active for 30 seconds or so. As long as that is active, I can re-enter the RemoteApp session multiple times. The moment I kill that process, I
get the error and must reboot.
I'm pretty sure something is being cached on the client side, but every lead I have found has not resulted in a resolution.
Anyone have any ideas? (Btw, "get off of XP" is not an option at this time. lol)
Any assistance would be great.

Visiting my folks this weekend, mom has a Gateway Pent4 running WinXP. She faithfully [every Saturday night @ 1:00 am] has MS run auto downloads, so all is up-to-date on that end. She has a dial-up connection, that runs at ~50 Kbps, and is pretty smooth and reliable over the past year or so...

Problem is when trying to go to certain web pages, a series of smaller window boxes open up, very very fast, starting in the upper middle of the screen, and then cascading down to the bottom right, all saying the same message: "IEXPLORE" in the title section, and "unspecified error" in the text section of each box, until the very last bottom-right has some code in it [that due to it disappearing very fast, is hard to find]. The IExplorer browser, and all of these little boxes, then disappear from the screen. However, the internet connection is still alive and connected.

Seems to mainly happen when visiting sites such as google, mail2world, and a few others.

And to add further frustrations, when trying to go to some sites, be they in her favorites or even new sites [such as www.pbs.org, cnn.com, etc.], will get the "page not found" crap...

Don't know, but could there be a whoops in her IE .exe code?

Any suggestions? Thanks!

I recently upgraded to Win 10, also installed Office 2016 Pro Plus. My Brother all in one printer scanned to email easily on Win 7, no longer does, Brother could not figure it out. I tried sending to email from Word, get "mapi failure, unspecified error".
Hoping that if I can solve this, scan to email will also work.
I have researched this issue for many hours, can find no solutions that are not old ones, referring to files and directories that do not exist. Tried renaming mapi32.dll (after installing the "take ownership" app.), to no avail. It never gets reinstalled. Tried copying it from a newer laptop, still no joy.

Using Windows Live mail client, set as default in Windows 10.

Most of the posts I can find on the internet regarding the mapi failure are for older systems, this is very new Windows 10, and new Office 2016.

Very disappointed in Microsoft issuing new software that will not work together!

There was an article on the Micorsoft site that said you get this error if you have disabled Personalize from Control Panel. I haven't done that. Just to be sure I went to gpedit.msc > User Configuration > Administrative Templates > Control Panel and disabled "Show only specified Control Panel items"
Still the problem persists.

I think the problem might have started due to CCleaner, as mentioned in the linked thread. Can't be sure though, just guessing.

point with https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com as resource. I am then using the access token retrieved to give the rest call to https://<tenant>.sharepoint.com/_api/v2.0/drives/b!3indYSbqZ0-hVSPnCgIZy-2xDMh7jH9AuQnEzJMc6TEfQoSJvJT-R6tT0lFBQiPr/root/delta
but it is failing with "error":{"code":"generalException","message":"General exception while processing"}}. The REST response code is 401 Unauthorized. I have filed a Microsoft support ticket but they
have asked me to post on these forms. Can someone please help me with this? I am not able to move forward because the error is pretty generic and doesn't give any additional details.

- chkdsk always checks the disk on startup
- tries to repair something on c: (deleting file record segment 24103)
- at step 2 from 3 crashes with the messsage: "an unspecified error has occured"

- i tried to boot with the original xp cd and run chkdsk from console but i still receive the same error
- i tried Norton Disk Doctor, but the only thing it can do it to make chkdsk run at the next startup
- i checked the disk with a maxtor utility (thorough check: no bad sectors)
- i tried "less vigorous check" with chkdsk (chkdsk /f /i /c) - same unspecified error, but this time at step 3 from 3
- there is an identical bug in win2k but no solution for winxp:

When you run the Chkdsk utility on a volume that is formatted with the NTFS file system, if a security descriptor stream is greater than 4 gigabytes (GB), you may receive the following error message:

CHKDSK is verifying security descriptors (stage 3 of 3)
An unspecified error occurred.

extra clues:
- a lost clusters folder (found.002) from my hdd cannot be deleted (the file or directory is corrupt and unreadable

My Win 7x64 desktop was off for several days, with the console unplugged. Upon first start up today, I was prompted to update the AMD driver to Catalyist 12.10, which I did. It seemed to have an effect on another app that I wanted to reverse, so I ran System Restore to right before the computer was last shut down. It returned an error message, and again after a normal reboot: It read that System Restore didn't complete running. "The data is invalid (0x8007000D)." Running System Restore to later time points got the same result.

Later, I tried a cold boot into System Repair, F8 (nothing found). The System Restore error message now was as follows:

"rstrui.exe - Application error
The instruction at 0xfb30584d referenced memory at
0x00000008. The memory could not be read."

I did a google search on rstrui.exe error, but didn't find a lot and so far none of it has worked. The last system image backup before today was two weeks ago, so that's not a welcome option. Any ideas what the problem might be and how to get Sys Restore going again? Thanks,

A:System Restore doesn't work: "rstrui.exe - application error"

By chance, do you have Agnitum Outpost firewall on your machine? Other forum threads indicate this could cause problems for system restore. The recommended solution was to disable a function called Self Protection.

You could also see if there are any damaged or corrupt system files by running a system file checker scan from and elevated command prompt (option two.) If problems are found run the scan 3 times and reboot your computer after each scan.

Hey there,

Recently in the past week ive been randomly having the internet "stop working" after 30-40mins of being on it, and all websites coming up with Connection Refused, with Sky Tech Support saying its all working fine and there showing activity.

So I assumed it may have been something I recently downloaded, so I uninstalled them all and it still kept happening, so I then tried a system restore, only to be met with "System Restore failed - Unexpected Error". Tried restoring around 3 times now and the same thing everytime.

The internet seems to be working still and active, but websites either come up as "Connection Refused" or just don't load up at all with a blank white screen.

Im posting asking for help with both the system restore and internet problem hoping that I can kill two birds with one stone by restoring it to before it started doing all this.

A:"Unknown Error" Doing a system restore, and weird internet problem

Vista system restore attempt throwing "not enough space" status

I'm unable to boot into the Windows GUI. When I power up the computer, the "Startup Repair" window stating "Your computer was unable to start" appears and attempts to correct the problem. After a few minutes, it reports that it cannot repair the computer automatically and presents me with a "System Recovery Options" window. Since the initial Startup Repair was unsuccessful, I'm choosing not to select that option again...so I thought the "System Restore" option would be the next best approach. When I try to perform the System Restore, I run into the following scenario . . . after I select my restore point and the restoring files activity is complete I recieve and error 0x80070070 and a message citing not enough space. My C: drive has 19Gb free so is the lack of space in a partition and if so how can I change it?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, and I'm more than happy to post additional information as required.

A:"%systemroot%\registration" System Restore Error?

I have just encountered the same problem and have not been able to get any answers either. I am running Win 7 Pro Sp1, x64 on an HP Pavilion.

All I keep seeing is you must do a reinstall. I am not buying this answer, it is a catch all answer. Someone must know of a way to repair this problem.

Another note with mine is that the System Restore disappeared from my System Tools.

I never got this when I do a create in system restore. The error said the restore didn't work because it was "RETIRED". Did I read that right? Is there such a thing. I did create later on, and it worked. Hope this isn't a virus.

I was trying to perform a system restore on my Sony Vaio, but I got an error during the process. The popup told me to restart my computer and try again. Now, whenever I try to turn on my computer I get this message: "BOOTMGR is missing. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

Whenever I do that, the same screen comes up. I have no re-install discs, none came with my computer. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium on a Sony Vaio model PCG-71312L.

I read on a Microsoft support forum to try restarting while pressing F8, but the same screen comes up.

Computer running extremely slow. Tried to do system restore but getting an error message that says "the creation of a shadow copy has timed out. Try this operation again. (0x81000101) - have tried again several times with no luck, Have read previous threads that say to clear restore points but am afraid that if I do this I will not be able to fix the problem had to begin with as i wont be able to go back to earlier saves. Would like to reinstall windows but the laptop came with it already installed so dont have a hard copy.

A:Can't do system restore - error message says "timed out"

Are you running an anti-virus software? If so, disable it before continuing.

Complete the following (taken from here):

Verify if these two services are started and running on your computer. If it’s not started, start the services and check if you can create a system restore point.

a) Volume Shadow Copy service
b) Windows backup

Also ensure that their dependency services are running.
Verify if their dependency services are running.

You can check this information from services.msc. To do this follow the steps below:

a) Go to start and type services.msc in the search field.
b) Locate the two services.
c) Right-Click on the service one at a time.
d) Select properties.
e) Go to Dependencies Tab.
f) Note the dependency services.
g) Make sure they’re also running.
h) To start a service, right click on it and select start.

You should also try booting up your system in Safe Mode and then trying the System Restore.

I just performed a System Restore without disks (as I have done in the past by pressing F10) halfway through the process the computer froze. I hit enter about 40 minutes later and it jumped to a screen that said "Restore successfully completed" i hit enter on the Finish tab for the computer to restart, but it froze again. after about 15 minutes I turned the computer off manually. The computer now says /Windows/system32/winload.exe is missing or corrupt. I can no longer access the restore screen and I was never given recovery discs when I bought the computer from the store. Can I use recovery CD's from another Hewlett Packard computer that runs off of Vista as well? I have the a1730n model and my sister has the a1700n model. Please help!!

A:System Restore performed...result "ERROR"

Okay, so I tried using her recovery discks to see if it would work and it did not It said that the disks could not be used with my computer.

What and where should I look for the software that will allow me to at least get to the recovery options again? Please help me!!!

When I press the key "E" (whilst holding down the "Window" key on my keyboard) -Windows Explorer should appear with a "C:drive" icon.
A few weeks ago - instead of the C:drive icon - I started getting a little screen with "Explorer.EXE" wording at the top L/H corner and the "Unspecified error" message in the middle.
Of course I can reach the C:drive icon by going to "Start" - "Computer"...
But the sudden appearance of this error message is irritating.
Any suggestion of remedy ???

I have searched everywhere on the internet for hours trying to find a solution to this, but no one seems to know exactly what causes this error when doing a system restore. Here is what it looks like on my computer after I try to do a system restore:

It could be that the "registration" folder is missing from C:\Windows or from C:\Windows\System32.

I wonder if someone might be able to check and see if you have a folder called "Registration" in either of these 2 directories. I have a valid OEM copy of Windows7 that I paid for and registered online about 6 months ago. I have enabled "View all hidden folders and files". Does anyone have any experience with this particular problem? I have the 32-bit version of Windows 7 with SP1.

A:System Restore "ComPlusStaging" error

Or, how about if somebody might do a search on "Registration" and see if a folder like this pops up anywhere on Windows 7. I'm wondering if I might have accidently erased this folder.

I dont know if this is the right thread, but here goes.

I try to start my Dell Inspiron 5010 laptop and I get "A disk read error occurred. Press Ctrl Alt Del to recover"

Every page I've Googled about this error tells me my hard drive is shot and needs to be replaced. I'm in total denial so, can this really be? Have I lost all my data?

Does the hard drive need to be gutted and replaced?

A:"A Disc Read Error Has occurred" during Startup - Dell laptop

Hello there and welcome to the forums Doomdaddy!

If you want to be absolutely sure whether your drive is gutted/or still recoverable, try and pull it out of the laptop and place it into an external USB caddy/enclosure, and plug it into a working system to see whether the system can detect it or not...

You can also try to reseat the the drive in the laptop by taking it out and putting it back in again after a cold shutdown..

Hope that helps!

"An internal database error occurred when saving/updating the profile"

I tried roll back and re-installing the drivers but none worked...

the spec is,

let me know if you guys got any idea with this problem...

thanks a lot guys.

A:"An internal database error occurred when saving/updating the profile"

Dear Animex:

I had exactly the same problem, with the same hardware. This is how I fixed it.

01. Take a System Restore.
02. Use Add/Remove programs to remove Intel(R) PROSet/Wireless Software.
03. Rename C:\Program Files\Intel to C:\Program Files\Intel-Old.
04. Reinstall the software. I downloaded the latest version,
05. Reboot when asked to.

Now, everything works.

well the title pretty much says it all.
I had been getting BSODs always, but I knew how to 'control' them (since I newly installed 7, I just had to start my PC, and once Windows ran and I could login, I restarted it.. and everything worked fine.. no BSOD). However, this time, I just felt like giving it a try the first time (login in without the restart), and well, I shouldn't have.

I got a BSOD, which by then I thought was normal, but then when the PC restarted, at the black controllers-screen I get the message "A disk read error occurred - Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart".

This I couldn't avoid: if I restarted I got to the very same screen and so on; I've searched for help in other places (some mention changing the slave/master functions of the hard drive and so on.., but none work), so I come to you.

Please, I urgently need your help. Thank you in advance.

A:"A disk read error occurred - Press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart"

Your hard drive has failed. Replace it.
Disk read error refers to the "hard disk".

So yesterday, my computer was in sleep mode, working fine. I was vacuuming my room and I blew a circuit, no biggie, happens all the time, so I turn off the vacuum and lights, went down to the fuse box, and flipped the switch back. I haven't tried to use my computer until I finished vacuuming. Once I finished, I sat down at my computer and turn it on.
Now normally, when I turn the computer on, it shows the motherboard screen, then goes to a black screen with white text which says "Verifying DMI Pool Data ............" at the bottom and then it goes to the windows start up screen. This time, after being stuck on the black and white screen for a while, under the "Verifying DMI Pool Data ............" It says "A disk read error occurred", "Press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to restart". I though that was strange, so I did what it said, Ctrl+Alt+Delete and it restarted. Same message. I tried repeating this several times, nothing new is happening. I use the power button on my computer and shut it off, then turn it back on again. A different black and white screen showed up with an error message and said to press enter to continue. I pressed enter, nothing happens, so I shut off the computer and turn it back on.
Now it shows me the normal windows crash screen, where you can choose to start windows in safe mode or start it normally. I, not knowing what safe mode even meant, picked safe mode. Safe mode loads up, no issues that I could see, but I noticed t... Read more

Ok, so it seems I have solved my own problem, but I'll leave the solution for anyone else who has this issue.
