P52s with 3 external monitors

Q: P52s with 3 external monitors

Hello, I have a P52s with a Thunderbolt 3 Gen 2 Dock (40AN0135US). I have 3 monitors, 1 is using HDMI while the other is using the Display port. I can't figure out how to get all 3 to work without one of them being in the resolution of 640x480. I am not using the HDMI port that is shared with the one display port. I can run 2 monitors at 1920x1080 along with my laptop display. but when I Close my laptop display and try to use 3 monitors, 2 are at 1920x1080 while the 3rd is at 640x480. My goal is to have all 3 monitors at 1920x1080 with my laptop screen closed. Please Help. Thanks, John

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi.  I'm hoping I can get this resolved on this forum.I just got my system and am trying to connect my 3 external monitors.    My setup is as follows:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 3 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable.  - worksMonitor 4 - DP ou to DVI in via a DP-DVI adapter - doesn't work. I can't figure out how to make this work.I also tried this setup:Monitor 1 - laptop screen - works.Monitor 2 - VGA out to VGA in - worksMonitor 3 - HDMI out to HDMI in - worksMonitor 4 - DP out to HDMI in via a DP-HDMI cable.  - doesn't work. Incidentally in this configuration, when I closed the laptop screen this monitor worked.  Also on a related note, the Nvidia Quadro P500  is sitting idle as the Intel UHD 620 is doing all the work.  How can I control this? Thanks for any suggestions. Sal

A:Thinkpad P52S Ultra Dock and 3 External Monitors

As stayed in PSREF, P52s supports up to three independent displays. Laptop's screen includes in this limit, meaning you can use two external displays at that time. When you close the lid, you can use three external displays. To use more, you'll need some sort of USB adapter to increase such a limit. Regarding other question, you can't disable Intel GPU - it's always active and it's always controls screen output. NVIDIA's dGPU can be configured to be used in selected applications, making them to work with higher performance. P52 and P72 for sure have an ability to disable Intel iGPU, giving the control of screen output to dGPU. Probably P1 and/or X1 Extreme have the same feature too.

I recently purchased the P52s and the Ultra Docking station.  I am dual booting Windows 10 Pro and Ubuntu 18.04.  I have dual 27" monitors connected to my Ultra docking station, as well as ethernet and power.  The Ultra connects to my P52s via USB-B Type -> USB.  Inititally all was well, but after a week or so,  my Ubuntu stopped seeing the dual monitors, even though the ethernet from Ultra continues to be picked up.   In Ubuntu the "display" only shows the built in laptop display and I cannot force it to detect external monitors. I have updated all the Lenovo drivers via the Windows updaters.  Previous threads seemed focused on other Lenovo products and didn't help me here.

Hey, I have a Lenovo p52s laptop with a built-in Intel HD graphics 620 and an NVIDIA P500 GPU.I am using a Thunderbolt 3 40AC USB-C docking station and have connected 3 external monitors (1xVGA, 1xHDMI, 1xDP).Currently, it seems onyl the Intel GPU is driving the monitors and so only 2 external monitors are working (the 3rd is recognized but not used).I'm trying to figure out how (if possible) to switch from the Intel to the NVIDIA GPU to drive the external monitors so I can get all 3 working as well as the built-in laptop display. I have windows 10 1803 installed and have installed Lenovo Vantage and all the updates (including the optional ones) it found.I updated to the latest (I think) BIOS version (N27ET34W 1.20, 27/02/2019) and can't find an option to use discrete graphics or any graphics options for choosing a GPU... Can anyone help with this? Previously I have a ThinkPad W541 with a docking station and an NVIDIA M1000 GPU and everything worked fine with 3 external displays connected to the docking station. Can anyone help please? Thanks! Tal

Hi, I'm having issues with my external 4k display to only be able to operate at 30Hz. I have my laptop connected to a generation 2 Thunderbolt 3 dock via the provided cable, and from there I have tried both DisplayPort and HDMI cables (several) to connect to my display. All the technical information I have seen says that my laptop plus the dock should be able to operate at 60Hz even at this resolution, but I'm unable to lock down the settings that enable me to do that. I have pulled the latest BIOS, TB3 FW, display drivers, Intel chipset drivers from the product page.My screen is: AOC U3277FWQ if that matters. I'm running Windows 10 Pro 1809. Has anyone battled with the same issue? I'm running out of ideas on how to solve this. The HDMI port on the side is apparently only 1.4 so this would only support the [email protected], but I'm not using it at the moment. If I set the screen to 1920x1080, I can set the resolution to 60Hz. Best regards,_tero

Hello, I have a P50 with the 4K display and the Quadro M2000 4GB video card.Running with only the discrete GPU enabled.Windows 10.I have this dock: https://support.lenovo.com/se/en/documents/acc100247 I have a Samsung UE850 4K display connected to displayport 1 and a Asus 2560x1440 display connected to displayport 2.The lid is closed. I can't get the 4K display to run using [email protected] if I run the Asus at [email protected] It automatically swithches to a "laggy" 30 Hz. If I reduce the resolution on the Asus to 1920x1080, then I can use the Samsung 4K to run at [email protected] thing if I disconnect the Asus then the Samsung runs at 60Hz. Is this by design? Can't the P50 manage a [email protected] and a [email protected]? Thanks!

A:P50 and external monitors

Hi Maleks,

Welcome to Lenovo Community!
As I understand that you are have query regarding 4K resolution while docked in your P50.
Yes its working as per design as both display ports on docked are connected with your single GPU Quadro M2000 4GB
It will work within the bandwidth limits of DisplayPort 1.2 (i,e, i.e. can do 4 * 1920x1200 * 60Hz, or 2* 4K * 30Hz)

For more details got this page

I hope the above information helps.
Please feel free to post in Lenovo Community Forums if you have any further queries!

Prabhansh

I started having an issue a few days ago with my P50 and an external monitor. I plugged it in and could find no option anywhere to mirror the display like it used to (so the same screen is on the laptop and the monitor). I searched for such a setting to no avail.Tonight, I unplugged the monitor, briefly (an H233H via HDMI) to see if the laptop would fit into a laptop case that I have, and then went to plug the monitor back in. When I did, the laptop screen went dark as though the laptop went to sleep - had to press the power button and log back in (it did not shutdown) - and now the external monitor isn't detected at all. I ran system updates, and have rebooted a couple of times, and still no external monitor. It's a ghost. How do I get it back?

Hi,
I have a small problem : I'm using my laptop at work and home with different external monitors and I end up having to manually set the display resolution constantly. I use a docking station so that I don't even have to open the laptop and I just send it to sleep and wake it up when I arrive to one place or the other. The problem is that my monitor at home is accepts way better resolution than the one at work, so when I wake it up at work, Windows tells me that it can't accept the resolution. I was wondering if there is a way to save settings for different monitors so that when I get to work I don't have to actually open the laptop and reset the resolution.
Regards,
Felix

A:Two external monitors with different resolutions

I assume you are using "Duplicate" mode for the multiple monitors.

The cable type can make a difference in what resolutions are available.
Are you are using a VGA cable in the office, and can you use a DVI or HDMI cable?
What video ports are on the docking station(s) and monitor(s)?

I have an AMD GPU, but i assume NVIDIA works the same way for this.

Hi, I tested and posted my results few years back: port replicators and/or dock which is DisplayLink certified can do this. Your machine dows not have docking port therefore you have to use USB port replicator (many vendors also call them as docking stations). HP has few products such as:     http://www.displaylink.com/newsroom/press-releases/displaylink-powers-latest-hp-3005pr-usb-30-port-r... Regards.

I have a P50 with the NVIDIA 2000 graphics card.  Without difficulty I set up my old W530 with two external monitors...one connected to the display port, the other to the VGA port.  Complete failure with the P50.  I connected one monitor to the P50 using the hdmi port and it worked.  Then I disconnected that monitor, rebooted the machine and connected one WQHD monitor via the display port.  No problem.  Then I tried to add the second monitor (HD) to the system via the hdmi port.  Initially the monitor wakes up and then goes to sleep.  When I go to System or via control panel the machine is seeing only the monitor connected via the display port it does not see the hdmi connected monitor at all.  And worse, disconnecting everything and just trying now to connect the HD monitor via hdmi, it doesn't work at all.  It is as if the hdmi port has gone dead (except that the monitor when connected shows a connection then goes to sleep).  Any ideas????

And I've been reading around that I need to know if my video card can handle 2 monitors... how do I find out?
The laptop I'm using is a Toshiba Satellite P105-S6147 with 3 megs ram, I'm thinking my video card is the Intel GMA 950 video, Windows Vista Home Premium.

The USB 3.0 port replicator can be used as a kind of docking station. Hook the keyboard, mouse,  monitor(s), speakers and anything else to it and leave it as your workstation. If you do not need to game, the device I linked actually has a pair of HDMI ports that will provide extended desktop. When you bring the laptop to work all you have to do is connect it to the power (you might want to invest in a spare AC adapter to leave in place) and the USB 3.0 and everything else will light up when you hit the power button. The difference between a docking station and a port replicator is that the former actually powers the laptop and has an on-off button.  If this is "the Answer"  please click "Accept as Solution" to help others find it.

I have a lenovo Yoga S730 and am getting a lot of issues using it with external monitors. It won't work with any plug and play monitor - I just get a USB device not recognised error. (Using an HDMI to USB-C cable which is my only option). I have downloaded the driver for the monitor from the Samsung website, which does work for a while... But if I unplug it, or restart the computer I get the error message coming back again. Weirdly if I try a few times it will then work, or if I delete and reinstall the driver. Monitors where I can't find a driver don't work at all - I have tried downloading the latest plug and play driver from the lenovo site but it says I have the most up to date drivers so doesn't install anything. I've used the same setup on my previous yoga with no issues at all (no need to download a driver) - I have tried three different monitors and all have the same issues. The samsung monitors we have are used by everyone in the office an all sorts of different machines and no one else has had this issue so I'm assuming it's a problem with my laptop. Any ideas?

I've got a C-level user who has a Latitude E7450, and E Port Plus docking station, 2 desktop monitors and a large, wall-mounted LCD monitor.  The E7450 has an Intel HD 5500 graphics card.  What he wants:

Laptop lid closed in the docking station off to the side.
Left-hand desk monitor as the primary.
Right-hand monitor as an extended desktop.
Wall-mounted monitor a clone/duplicate of the primary monitor (he uses it for meetings at his conference table at the other end of his office).

The wall-mount monitor is wired inside the wall to a wall plate with an HDMI connector.  It comes with a 6-ft cable with HDMI on one end (plugs to the wall) and DVI-D on the other.  He also had a short adpater connected to the DVI end with Display Port on the other which he had plugged into his old HP docking station.
The right-hand monitor is connected with VGA and the left-hand with DVI.
No matter what type of adapters or cables I try in various combinations, I am unable to get it to work as he wants.  We replaced his old HP laptop about 3 weeks ago and it worked fine in this scenario. Based on my previous readings, it was possible with the help of an extra hardware. The Matrox DualHead2Go splitter can take one video input and split it to two monitors. you could look for similar devices or try to buy one. Its not another VGA card but it works like a router, connect your laptop to the DualHead2Go then connect the two monitors.

I want to get a new laptop that I can have 2 external monitors

Failing that... What laptops are good for USB3 monitor adapters?

I have a hp laptop. 8gb ram. 2.8ghz speed. Really good and hasn't failed.

Problem: I've tried MANY adapters. I started with cheap but well reviewed ones. Failed. Then I went for really expensive ones. For both... Started off ok. But quickly just stopped working

If I get a new laptop... How will I know ahead of time if its good for USB3 monitor adapters? (Assuming laptops with 2 monitor outputs don't exist or are scarce)

Hi, I'd like to add a couple of external monitors to my Yoga 2 Pro, specifically the Dell u2515h model. This has dvi and hdmi in and displays at 2560x1440. Will the micro hdmi drive 2560x1440? How would I get the second external monitor connected? I've seen some usb3 - hdmi connectors but most seem to top out at 1920x1080.  How do do I get this to work without spending a fortune on connectors- I'd rather spend the money on getting a better set of monitors.  Should i I give up on the idea of dual 2560x1440? Should I go for two u2414h monitors, which would give 1920x1080 on each screen?  Thanks, Ian Brown

AFAIK the Yoga 2 Pro's built-in HDMI is version 1.4, which should be able to output 2560x1440 at 60Hz.As for a second monitor, you can look into a USB 3 to HDMI DisplayLink solution. Some of these support up to 4K. The biggest caveat with a USB solution is that the CPU will be under a fair amount of strain as it must handle the encoding of the video stream. This also means that while you can probably output 60Hz office and productivity work over the USB, any fullscreen games/videos will be very choppy.

I am trying to connect my P50 ThinkPad to two external monitors. One monitor is attached through HDMI-HDMI cable. The other monitor is attached through Mini Displayport-HDMI adapter, then HDMI-HDMI to monitor.  The HDMI-HDMI monitor is working great. I do have to change the BIOS to discrete graphics in order to get it to work, but it works.  However, the Mini DisplayPort is giving me issues. The computer recognizes there is a monitor attached, but no graphic displays on the monitor. When I call Lenovo support, they tell me I should have a docking station, but I was told I can support these monitors without a dock. I also checked the BIOS, and the primary display is set to DisplayPort. I'm running a P50 ThinkPad with a Quadro M2000M graphics card. I am using two LG 24" LED monitors, which only have an HDMI and VGA port. The ThinkPad only has one HDMI port, a Mini-DisplayPort, and a Thunderbolt 3 port.  Cables available: 2xHDMI-HDMI, 2xVGA-VGA, 1 mini displayport-HDMI adapter This has been driving me crazy for three days so any help would be appreciated!

My suggestion is to just go with a straight 2-ended miniDP->HDMI cable, like this one, for $8. You can get whatever length you want.

I don't use adapters.  I only use straight cables.  No issues.

I currently have a laptop running with an external monitor attached and extended desktop. It works wonders. I've been itching to add my tv to the collection as a monitor for when I use the laptop for gaming. Considering, I already have a wireless keyboard/mouse, all I would need to do is add the tv as a monitor and I'll be set.
I've been looking at some usb to vga cables/adapters but not sure how they work. I really only need this monitor to be used half the time, so extending to it full time is kind of worthless.
Can you have a mix of extended desktop displays and duplicated displays across various monitors? Or, is it even worth it?

A:Laptop and external monitors

I am not sure that your laptop would have the processing power to run 3 screens (including it's own). You could manually swap the output between your second screen and your tv when you needed it without much trouble.

I would not recommend a USB to VGA adapter for gaming purposes.

Hello I'm having trouble using two external monitors with my L560. One monitor is connected with VGA to VGA, another monitor is connected with DP to HDMI. When both are connected the VGA connected monitor functions, but there is not connection detected with the other monitor. When the VGA is disconnected, the DP-HDMI functions (so there seems to be no issue with the cable and ports etc.). The "Extend" setting (press F7) uses the Laptop monitor and one external monitor. Ideally I want the laptop screen to be blank and the display extended across the 2 external monitors. Does anyone have any ideas how to resolve the matter? Do I need a Docking station? Any advice is much appreciatedMichael Any help

I have three external monitors I utilize in addition to the laptop screen. Currently I have one external monitor plugged into a VGA port and two external monitors with DVI cables run through seperate USB3.0 HDMI adqapters into a USB hub, then plugged into a USB port.  Is there a better way to set this up as occasionally my monitors lock up and it won't play sound play on the computer.  Please note The external monitors only have DVI and VGA ports on them. Also, I have a display port that is not currently being used.
