Thunderbolt 3 ports only detecting devices once on X1E, only sees them again after clean install

Q: Thunderbolt 3 ports only detecting devices once on X1E, only sees them again after clean install

I have a UAD Apollo Twin Mk II TB audio interface. I have a couple TB cables that I've tried with the same results. Use an Akitio T3T TB3 to TB/TB2 adapter: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01M04U186/ref=oh_aui_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Has always worked without issue until trying on this laptop. Just tried on a different computer and works fine. Latest BIOS 1.19. After a clean install of Windows, install all drivers and make sure they are up to date. Thunderbolt icon appears in the notification area. Plug in the Apollo and power it on. It is recognized. Select "Always recognize" or whatever it is as opposed "Just this once" or "Never". Install the UAD software, or not... the outcome is the same. Restart. Log back in to Windows. Thunderbolt icon no longer appears. Open it manually. Says device isn't conected despite it being connected and powered on. Try different TB3 ports. Remove device from list of approved devices in TB3 software. Uninstall and reinstall the TB3 drivers. Remove any mention of the device from registry. Result is the same. Won't say it is plugged in. Did a clean install of Windows... read the previous paragraph over... same thing. Anyway, any idea what is going on here? Honestly, about to return the thing. Between this issue and and the +30 hours spent trying to get dual boot working, to no avail, with every combination of UEFI Only w/o CSM, UEFI Only w/ CSM, Legacy Only (all without Secure Boot) and Ubuntu Desktop, Ubunutu Live Server, Ubuntu Server Standard, or Xubuntu, and MBR or GPT, this thing is basically worthless to me.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hello everyone...

I have a brand new Acer Predator AG3620. It has an Intel I7, 12 GB of RAM and an NVIDIA GeForce GT 630 2GB video card. It shipped with a 2 TB hard drive and Windows 8 which worked fine.

I installed a Mushkin Chrone 240GB SSD drive and wanted to install a clean copy of Windows 8 on there to remove all the Acer bloatware. This is where my life ended... After an unfortunate series of incidents, I am finally at the point where the BIOS (or whatever they call it these days) recognizes and boots from the drive. However, the Windows 8 installation will not complete.

It gets to "Detecting Devices" and after it gets to 69%, 72% or 79% (it changes all the time), the system reboots and I get an error message, "The computer restarted unexpectedly or encountered an unexpected error. Windows installation cannot proceed. To install Windows, click "Ok" to restart the computer, and then restart the installation." After searching tirelessly for a solution, I realized that Acer had a BIOS update which I installed and I am STILL having the same problem.

I suspect there is some type of hardware compatabilty issue but I am not aware of any logfile that can help guide me. I have done this installation about 20 times in the last few days and it is absolutely maddening. It just WILL NOT work! I have read every post I could find and tinkered with every setting in the BIOS, port on the motherboard and SATA cable I have. I have gone from AC... Read more

A:Clean install on SSD keeps failing at Detecting Devices..

Your suspicions are correct. I have had the same problem on several different models, since the earlier public previews. There have been three or four solutions offered, even on this site, none of which have worked. In particular are older HP models, especially the Envy15, but some Acers are also experiencing the problem.
Bu you could be lucky. Do you not have any restore disks which you could experiment with? Final solution for you is, of course, to return the old HD to the machine and hope all is well.
Popular theory is that it is the graphics card. This idea doesn't sit well with me, as when I have encountered that particular problem with other machines, it merely reverts to the Default VGA screen, which, of course, it has been using right through the install process.

A little background info:
I had a friend of mine build this PC for me a few days ago, its custom.
This is the motherboard I bought (new): Z-97A
I did a lot of upgrades so we had to do a custom install, I chose the default location to the same drive as my original W7 OS was on.
I installed all the drivers that came with the motherboard and all windows updates.
Even if they are not recognized the devices still get power (like my phone will charge but the PC doesnt know what it is or even see it as unknown)
While gaming 2 nights ago one of my presumed dead USB ports that didnt read my Sennheiser headsets randomly began to read it & automatically installed drivers for it after I was initially unable to get it to detect before. So it just kinda came "alive" on its own you could say

When my Sennheisers were detected I immediately installed the drivers for them from their website but now it shows up as "Unspecified". Before my reinstall of windows I am pretty sure it listed in the devices category with a picture of the headset.

FWIW:  Duplicate devices may appear...if one device is used to install...and a different one is used later, IME.
The ximple way to remove any apparent dupes...is to delete them via Device Manager (including the use currently installed)...then reboot and reinstall the drivers if they are not automatically reinstalled by Windows.
Device Manager typically reflects such items on a given system, see Remove Unused Drivers and Devices - http://www.windowsnetworking.com/kbase/WindowsTips/WindowsXP/UserTips/TroubleShooting/RemoveUnusedDriversandDevices.html .

Hi all, it's friday the 13th and on cue i have another weird one i have a PC that does not detect any USB device connected to it though i know power runs through since it can charge my cell phone. here is what i have so far: 1. WinXP home SP2, P4 2.63Ghz, Gigabyte 81845GVM-RZ, 256 DDR400. 2. have uninstalled all usb root hubs and rebooted 3. 2 ports at the front of the case and 2 at the rear, plus (here's the punchline) 2 ports from a PCI add on card. NONE of them work. 4. USB controller is enabled in BIOS. 5. while my cell phone charges blissfully, the power tab of all root hub properties still shows 0mA 6. i've tried clearing CMOS 7. i've done a repair (NOT full/format) installation of the OS 8. to try and isolate the issue, i've tried booting from miniPE (a WinPE variation) while a USB flash drive was plugged in, it's worked for me before, nogo here either. what have i missed? not sure about changes made to the system prior to this since it's someone elses and they can't say for sure either. i'd settle for it being a mobo issue and recommend they trash it, but an add on card too? please help guys, you've saved my posterior before, so i'm counting on you. thanks.

I have dell inspiron 5520 and previously windows 7 was installed on it and now I have clean installed windows 10, after installation i noticed that usb ports are no longer detecting devices. In the device manager i can see exclamation mark on USB xHCI compliant host controller with error code 10. It must be some driver problem. I tried every solution on the internet related to this problem but all in vain. Please help its really frustrating and disappointing.
I have tried following solutions so far:

uninstall driver and restart
installed windows updates
downloaded drivers from vendor's site
updated bios

A friend of mine has same laptop with windows 10 and his ports are working.

I'm running windows 7...
I have 4 usb ports on the back, two on the front
All usb ports appear to be giving power, i can charge things (except ipod), but no devices get recognized in windows
So yesterday i plugged my camera into my computer and it cause my mouse to turn off. After which i plug my mouse into a different usb slot which seem to work. After a while i notice though that my mouse would lag and cause my computer to not response for a few seconds every once in a while... The next day when i came to my pc i notice my keyboard was turned off... I tried to move it to different ports and in every port i would get "Device not Recognized or malfunctioning..." No usb device gets recognized anymore, except my razor mouse, for some reason this gets identified.

Right now i have no keyboard and i can't go into my bios or re-install my OS... I tried putting BOTH my keyboard and mouse into usb-ps/2 converters but when i plug them into the ps2 ports nothing happens... no windows device sounds, nothing happens...

I tried uninstalling my usb controllers from device manager, as well as manual install my dell keyboard drivers (NEITHER DID ANYTHING)

I'm pretty much lost for ideas here...

PS/2 ports are, I think, not plug and play. Try shutting down the system and then boot with the keyboard/mouse plugged into the PS/2.

I had just reinstalled Windows 7 professional on my laptop (dell latitude E6440) because of some issues. Well the reinstall went thru perfectly and had no problems. But now it won't connect to the Internet and won't let me make a connection. A box keeps coming up saying "not connected-no connections are available". Then when I click on the Internet and try to set up a new connection it comes up saying "Windows did not detect any networking hardware". This kinda sucks so I was wondering if anyone could help me out and figure out how to fix this.

When I plug things in on the right, it recognizes it and it installs but tells me the device is unknown. No matter the device, it's always unknown in either port.

Until yesterday, when I removed some upper filters and lower filters associated the GearA??? it constantly was giving me that "plunking" sound like something had been plugged into a USB port and it was "not recognized". That was driving me nuts as I could not get it to stop.

I have been reading on here for a couple of days and gone through all the troubleshooting:

Uninstalled the devices in device manager as instructed.
Ran SIV - Service Information Viewer

Gone thru instructions to remove upper and lower filters with Regjump

Is it possible that you need special SATA drivers for AHCI, which are not included in Windows?
It looks strange to me as Windows 7 should have AHCI support built-in, but well..

If so, try reading this tutorial: it's exactly the way I did to create an XP CD that would install on my ICH10R chipset (the "clean" MSDN install CD I had wouldn't recognize my HD if I had AHCI enabled in the BIOS) and maybe (but I don't know it for sure) you can adapt it to Windows 7 somehow
SATA Drivers - Slipstream into Windows XP CD

If your chipset has AHCI enabled, indeed, you may:
either need to get the specific AHCI drivers for your SiS 968 chipset (if you're installing Windows from a "clean" CD)
or use a recovery media/partition from MSI (which, hopefully, will have inbuilt the drivers you need).
Otherwise (if AHCI drivers aren't provided the right way) it could tell you that a disk couldn't be found (again, it looks strange anyway).

Does the drive work correctly, as far as you know?

In W7, When Booting the USB works fine and I have a mouse, but when it gets to the login screen the keyboard and mouse just go black and do not function at all in W7. W10 works fine all the time.

I installed W7 after W10 and got everything loaded for SP2 and so on(using the pad/keys on the laptop), all drivers install fine and W7 updates are all in.

In order to even get into W7 though I must go into BIOS and turn off security settings and turn on CSM. Also must turn off Fast boot function. Not doing these things just locks the W7 load screen where the color dots are in mostion then lock.

Is there a way to get the USB to be working on W7 from login screen and into desktop?

Am using the W10 Dual boot selection screen after install of W7 used "bcdboot %windir%" to set that up.

Will I need to redo the W7 install? (Hope not)

Any suggestions?

Can I trouble you for your feedback on something else. Every few months I clean install the Windows operating system on my PC. Is it the same for you in that sometimes the Windows 8 setup picks up all of the devices (it usually only misses one..a Bluetooth peripheral device with a question mark. That's easily sorted by installing Wireless drivers from Dell site). Then on other occasions it'll leave the occasional exclamation mark usually listed in Other Devices but not always. That disappears when the chipsets are installed. Most of the time I never get these at all but its happened a couple of times lately. Im wondering if its caused because Im installing from Windows 8 DVD and not from a factory image.I guess really what Im asking is..Is the Windows Installation sometimes a bit hit and miss at picking up everything in Device Manager during initial setup? Sometimes theres an occasional error and other times its fine (This is on the same system with the same hardware with no changes from previous windows installations)
Thanks guys

A:Device Manager re:devices after Windows clean install

My guess is that you have other hardware connected during some of these installs and not at other times.

My question is, why do you reinstall every couple months? Are you bored, just for fun or is it to solve problems. I know this sounds snarky but it's a serious question.

I have a Western Digital MyBook (external drive that connects via Firewire) and an iPhone. Up until about a day or so ago, both were working just fine. I could see both devices in explorer and connect to them without any problems.

Now, I'm no longer able to see them in Explorer. My PC still "sees" the devices on some level because the iPhone will connect and sync with iTunes. (I just can't get to the iPhone as an USB drive from explorer.)

The HD is still listed in the device manager. However it is listed as "This device is not configured correctly." I've tried uninstalling, disabling, reinstalling drivers, different ports and have had no luck getting my machine to see either device. I've rebooted with them plugged in/unplugged, drivers/no drivers, and even tried different ports. I even tried system restore.

I've also verified that there is nothing wrong with the HD or the iPhone. Both connect flawlessly on my husband's Vista (non 64bit of course) machine. I also have thumb drive that connects (and shows up in explorer with no problems).

Any suggestions would be appreciated! Thanks

Hello,      I have been using a Lenovo T480 with a thunderbolt 3 graphics dock that includes a graphics card. Hi all, I'm a little confused at the moment as I just received a usb type c charging cable, thinking my dell XPS 15 9550 would charge my device samsung s6 faster. But in fact it charges my phone twice as slow as the USB 3.0 port does.
Now where I am confused, why is it the USB 3.0 charges at one level, and the thunderbolt port charges the device twice as slow. E.g when connected to USB 3.0 it shows charging time 1:42, but when connected to thunderbolt it shows up as 4:53.
Is the thunderbolt port not suppose to be able to deliver much higher charging to devices than the USB 3.0 port?

I'm looking for a way to turn off the approval notice when connecting new Thunderbolt 3 devices to Windows 10 machines. We are currently testing Thinkpads (T480s) with Thunderbolt 3. When connecting the Lenovo TB3 dock for the first time, the Thunderbolt software requires approval for the device on initial connection. Most of our users do not have local admin credentials so my team has to setup each TB3 dock with our Active Directory local admin accounts. This appear to happen for each TB3 port, not just the laptop in general. Here is what we've found out so far. We are aware that the BIOS has an option to change the TB3 security level from "User Authentication" to "No Security". If you select "No Security", then connecting a new TB3 dock is possible without local admin rights. But, the Thunderbolt software will popup a message "Device was approved during boot, but is not part of the current approved devices list." You can tell Windows to stop the notification, but we want to just be able to pre-approve TB3 devices without any notifications. We believe the "No Security" option is actually for using TB3 devices during pre-boot (Example: PXE booting). Although, the T480s also has a BIOS option for TB3 support during pre-boot. Yes, seems redundant. In the past, one of our remote users could just dock to a standard docking station at a guest cube and off they went. With this setup of the T480s and TB3 dock, we can't do that right now. Although, we also are testing the L... Read more

Good afternoon,

I have just recently purchased a Thunderbolt TB15 from Dell. I was so excited until I connected to my laptop.
I followed the instructions for the drivers installation http://en.community.dell.com/support-forums/laptop/f/3518/t/19677047
It didn't work. I remove all the softwares and tried again, still no improvement.
I finally gave Dell support a call, but it didn't resolve my issue.
So, I am currently able to get a power from the TB15, but that's it. All other ports, USBs, Ethernet, etc. are still not working.
When I plugged an Ethernet cable, I can see the blinking on the TB15 but it didn't connect to my laptop.
I have a 9350 series.
FYI, I searched on this forum and tried to do all the suggested solution, but I have no luck.

Please let me know if anyone of you has a solution for this.

Thank you

I use it with Thunderbolt 3 docks at work and at home. These docks are far more advanced than the T510 dock, and cost far more. Each has four USB ports. How far do four ports go? Well, the keyboard uses one and the mouse uses one... one for the headset my soft phone uses... and at home, one for my printer. All four ports are gone, and I haven't done any work yet! If I ever need to plug in something else -- a camera, a memory stick, a bridge to another computer -- I'll have to plug it in to the computer itself, because the dock can't handle it. How did Lenovo manage to produce an expensive state-of-the-art dock that doesn't have enough USB ports for anything more than basic functions, when they knew enough to make an adequate one ten years ago? What are they thinking???

All the testing I have done shows no Intel Thunderbolt 3 software or drivers installed under the standard current updated Lenovo configuration.  The Intel Thunderbolt control centre from the MS Apps store will not install also. The Lenovo support want me to re-image my 920 and C930 but this appears to be a waste of time if the required software for Thunderbolt 3 port does not exist and if the required Intel Thunderbolt controller chip is not installed . The Thunderbolt icon also does not appear when a thunderbolt device is plugged in.  The bios does not have the required Thunderbolt security settings options either. All of this makes me doubt that the claimed 40 gps Thunderbolt 3 ports are anything more than conventional 5 or 10 gps USB 3-c ports as that is what they appear to be setup as by Lenovo  I hope i am wrong. The required drivers are clearly visible in other similar specification Thunderbolt 3 computers e.g. HP spectre X360 but do not appear in the Lenovo C930 and 920

Hello Everyone! Need a BIG help here. I have the P72 here +- 6 months only ( brand new )  working flawless. But yesterday the 2 usb-c ports are not recognizing anymore!  Why?  software?   need to reinstall windows?  the ports are dead? I only use cintiq in port 1... and some HDs ( not always ) in port 2. But now no device are working anymore:- HDs don't turn on ( lights ) and not connect  ( in both ports)- And the cintiq don't connect. ( both ports too ) Already test the cables/cintiq in another machine and is working 100%. So i have 100% sure the problem is something with  the thinkpad usb-c ports only  Here a file the thunderbolt software is not showing the ports too!.

So I just got my new P52 and am trying to figure out why the 2 back ports (USB-C Thunderbolt ports) are so slow???   I have a Samsung T3 that is a USB 3.0 device and when I plug it into the normal USB-A ports on the 2 sides it transfers just fine at 480MB/s like it is supposed to.  But when I plug that T3 into the USB-C port in the back, I get about 33MB/s, so basically 10x slower!!!  What gives, any advise would be great since tech support was no help.

I upgraded from XP SP3 to Windows 8 a week ago using the Assistant program with no problem. Then 2 days later that HDD crapped out. So I made the DVD/USB media on another PC and tried a clean install. After 10 attempts to clean install with all the "tricks" I could find on the net the installation stops in the same place every time. After I see the "Getting Devices Ready 100%" the setup goes to reboot but power off instead. When I restart manually I get a "Windows cannot configure...." error. I called Microsoft and one rep told me that I needed to install a previous OS for the upgrade to work so I installed XP sp3 and tried the clean install method again to get the same error. Formatted and installed the XP again and tried to install through the Assistant program with the Microsoft guy on the phone and the install stops in the same place but the Assistant reverts back to the old OS instead of telling me to run setup again. The Microsoft guy said it was because I am running XP Home instead of Pro but it worked with the Hom edition the first time and I cannot find anyone else on the net with a Home edition problem. Any suggestions?

Hey out there, I have tried everything from: microsoft support, forums, etc. but I cannot get my pc to detect my devices & names except for multi-printer, mouse, computer, keyboard, and a generic external hard drive without a (drive letter?) in the devices and printers catagory. When I hit computer catagory after start, it only shows: local disc (C:), and removable disc device, which is my desktop computer's internal DVD/CD player. HELP! Now more politely, I would love your help..

Thank you so much for your reply!!

Have a look in Device Manager. If you see one or more yellow question-marks in the device list it means you need to install the drivers for the devices which currently don't work. The drivers can be downloaded from your PC or laptop maker's website if they support Windows 7 on your particular model.

i googled and searched for this. but i can't find anything similar to my problem. sorry is this is a repeat.

my laptop is a few years old (behind the times)
make & model: Acer Aspire 4315-2490
using windows vista basic.

about a year and a half ago, 2 of my 3 usb ports stoped deteting ANYTHING. the 2 that don't work are on the right side of my laptop with the working one on the left. i plug a flash drive in and light on flash drive doesn't even come on. it's like my computer is acting like i'm not pluging in anything at all. i just did a system restore to factory settings last night. they still are not working.

Sorry, but it sounds as though you have a physical hardware problem. Without opening up the computer and doing advanced and expensive repairs, there is no way of fixing this. You will just have to live with 1 USB port. You could however buy yourself small USB splitter so you can have more than 1 USB device plugged in at once.

Sorry again,

I have an HP Zbook Thunderbolt 3 dock on my HPZbook G3.  I recently updated the BIOS and firmware to the latest version to fix other "dock" issues.  Am now at the latest for both.  The dual monitors and ethernet over the Thunderbolt 3 work, but none of the USB ports are active. I'm certain the USB ports work, becuase they used to work prior to the BIOS and firmware update.  Neither keyboard, mouse, or USB memory work in the dock. I've tried going to HP support and installing any of the updates with USB in it, but it hasn't worked.  I have a workaround--just plugging in to the notebook directly, but would like to get my dock fully functional. The Device manager doesn't show any devices with issues.  I'll try to update, but I don't know which one to look at.

Hi, I updated the Thunderbolt FW and driver on my T480(SN: PF1LR2YX) today due to display issiues on my 3rd monitor, but afterwards there are no longer any devices on the Thunderbolt Port 1. And i have it connected to a Thunderbolt 3 workstation dock, Type: 40AN (SN:ZJZ00SSC). I updated the FW on this earlier today and it worked fine afterwards (thinkpad_tbt3_gen2_ws_dock_fw_v3164_new).  I disconnected all devices from the TB port before FW update as the message on the screen requested me to do.There was no errors during the update process that i saw, but afterwards there were no devices on TB port 1 anymore. And i have tried to install the FW and SW serveral times no, no difference.FW/SW version info pic is attached from about page on Tbunderbolt sw.Runing win10 enterprise ver.1709.Installed SW file: n22ta0aw.exe, Version: FW file: n24th08w.exe, Version: driver for TB3 docking: thinkpad_tbt3_gen2_ws_dock_driver_10015.zip (https://pcsupport.lenovo.com/us/en/downloads/DS505148) I don't know how to troubleshoot this anymore, so I hope someone here can help me!

We have a camera that we need to use that has FireWire 800 as its sole interface, and because it needs to be mobile we had to use it with a laptop.  After some research we decided that the best course of action was to purchase a ThinkPad W540 and connect the camera to the Thunderbolt port with a Thunderbolt to FireWire Adapter, as this should give us plenty of bandwidth for the camera.  Unfortunately, we haven't been able to connect any FireWire devices to the laptop in this way.  We have tried connecting both the camera and a FireWire hard drive through the adapter, and while the power lights will come on for both devices the computer resolutely refuses to even acknowledge their existance.  I have tried everything that I can think of to get this to work, updating all of the dirvers on the laptop, checking all of the settings in the BIOS, and searching the forums for similar issues, but now I have run out of ideas.  What can I do to get this laptop to play nice with my FireWire devices?

Good afternoon and welcome to the community.
Sorry you're having issues using a Thunderbolt-2-Firewire adapter.
Not much I can offer on that as I've never used one, but an alternative might be to try an Expresscard Firewire adapter. A number of them I've seen offer 2 ports, so that might be useful also.

I have an Acer Aspire 2-in-1 convertible laptop purchased in July. All of a sudden, after restarting my computer, my 3 different USB ports are no longer detecting anything. (USB drives; the smart connection to my wireless mouse; a card reader.) I am a total luddite but could someone please talk me through how to find and 'turn on' or re-enable my USB ports? I am running Windows 10, in case that makes a difference.TIA!

After upgrading to windows XP from windows 95 (using full version of XP) I found that my computer did not and could not detect anything in my PCI ports (sound card and networking card). I still have windows 95 installed and when I boot in 95 I can detect them.

Actually I have no real idea what's going on. the computer says it is detecting them as well as a sound card but doesn't show it. It is detecting a standard sound card, not the one I have. It isn't even detecting or think it's detecting my networking card.

Hello everyone Merry Christmas.

As a gift for a buddy of mine i've promised to fix up an old computer in an effort to aid with his career as an oil painter (access to Fineartamerica, research, etc.).

But at any rate; I've done a bit of swapping around of hard disk drives and cd drives and whatnot and have decided on a very basic config. using a single hard drive in the Master slot and a single cd drive in the slave.

The problem im seeing is that the Bios is not detecting either of the drives, or perhaps very briefly then disapppearing.

At first i thought it may have been the cmos battery, because the drives would appear at first and then disappear immediately, but i've purchased a new cmos battery and its still doin the same thing.

For a while i thought i may have had the wrong jumper settings because the hd drive didnt label them, but i checked a diagram online of an identical drive and its set at the master slot; and the cd drive at the slave.

I've tested it with several IDE cables in multiple channels and it still gives me the same message when turned on 'Reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device and press a key'.

also, the disk drive opens and functions properly when IDE cable is not connected, but when it is connected it doesn't appear to be getting any juice.

any thoughts?
