Dell Inspiron 15 keyboard doesn't work when desktop boots up

Q: Dell Inspiron 15 keyboard doesn't work when desktop boots up

Hi...I'm not sure where to put this request, thought since the Dell Inspiron 15 is running Windows 10 (including latest update) that there might be a conflict between the desktop and the keyboard down in the nuts and bolts somewhere. I can turn the machine on, the capslock light comes on, SOMETIMES the keyboard works well enough to input the pin to get the desktop booted up. Sometimes I have to go through steps to get the touch screen keyboard up in order to input the pin. However, as soon as the desktop is active, the keyboard no longer works. I've updated the drivers, don't know what else to do. When I try a search online for a solution, I get differing ideas on how to solve the problem. I've tried resetting the BIOS to default settings, that didn't work. Any and all help will be much appreciated. I really need the keyboard to be working, my kids do their homework on my laptop.

Thanks in advance for any help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi....All

I recently bought Dell Inspiron 14R N4110, which came only one default partition (C:\) with Windows 7 Home Premium.
But later on, I did one more partition (D:\), and I installed all drivers(which comes with Dell laptop). but some how my internet is not working properly. Sometime its too slow and not connecting.

I reformatted the laptop, and Restored the modem/router to factory defaults (in that order) neither helped. But if I restored my laptop to factory default (which I don't want, because it has only one partition C:\ ), than everything works fine. Why its happen ?

I hope that you people will be a big help.
I greatly appreciate your help.

Thank you.

I have not used this computer for about a week, and now when I turn it on my keyboard doesn't work. It is a generic keyboard that came with my Dell.(Mouse works fine until I try to type, then freezes). I went into Device Manager and there was a yellow sign indicating a problem with my keyboard. I tried to update driver, but there was no newer version than the one installed. Device properties indicate that "this device can not start. (code 10)". I don't know what code 10 is. Tried to uninstall, and reinstall... nothing.

So, naturally, I tried a different keyboard (the one I know is good) and this one is USB (wired Natural Ergonomic 4000 by Microsoft) and it installed fine. According to device manager, it works properly. However, still can not type. Tried to connect it to a different USB port; that didn't help either.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

It's just me or there is anyone there with the same problem? Have anyone any idea about it?

Yep, this is happening with me too. Extremely frustrating when I have the screen pushed back so the keyboard is on my lap (usually playing games with a gamepad) - this means I can push all sorts of keys and use the trackpad!
My laptop is also not auto-rotating when in 'tent mode' OR full tablet mode! AGH!

My Dell Inspiron Laptop which runs on Windows Vista will not start properly, the screen will go black after loading, this is before i can get to the log on stage. There is only a cursor which i can move.

I then started Startup Repair and it performed the checks, but my computer still wouldn't start. I then tried System Restore which didn't have a backup. I clicked the link to create a backup, but it said 'Your computer is running in a limited diagnostic state'. I have tried running the Windows Vista disk and it doesn't change anything. I have tried every method I know of, but I cannot get my computer working. Is there any other way, if you know please help me.

Ok, lets talk a minute about your windows xp load on your hard drive... How old is it? I mean how long have you been running this install of Windows xp? How did it run? Any viruses or issues with file curruptions now or in the past? How did it (your laptop) function just before all this happened?

Assuming your xp is microsoft legit, I would attempt to reinstall Windows and system drivers.. Yup, a full reformat and reload of your hard drive... The benefits here is that during the format portion in this procedure, the format tool will check your hard drive health by looking for dead sectors... If you have too many dead sectors Windows install will come to a hault, this is a sign that your hard drives life span has come to an end.... But if you have no hard drive bad sector issues you might just need a full, fresh, install of Windows...

I give this advice not knowing some key details like how old your system is, any previous problems with your systems windows health or previous hardware issues... Also, my advisery aboved is based on the fact that you are still unable to get your current windows to load and run...

If you don't know or you are unfamiliar with re-loading Windows and system drivers you should either research it, and also make sure you have all the software you will need, atleast your Windows xp cd and you Nic/ethernet drivers... Dell is pretty good at providing online drivers, or see a pc tech/ or a pc store if this is too much for you...

If this is a desktop, lay it on its side and take the cover off. If it is a heat problem, this might help to cool. If it runs a while, download this to monitor the temp.

My Dell Inspiron 17R 5720 doesn't recognize charger any more. And unfortunately my warranty expired 2 month ago.It was plugged in and working in the morning, but then in the afternoon I noticed that it was running on the battery only. It wont start without battery (just charger plugged in).
1. So here what I have done to debug. Me and my brother, we have purchased the same Dell laptops at the same time a year and a bit ago. This is why for a debugging purposes it was good.I took my charger and plugged in to his computer. And it works. Definitely not the charger issue I guess. And when I plug charger in to my computer, green light is still on the charger. And I have the original charger that came with the laptop.
2. Now, laptop works on the battery only, so this means that motherboard is working. I guess.
3. Next thing I did was unplugged charger and removed the battery from the laptop. Then I pushed and hold "Power" button for 45 seconds to discharge a flea charge. Plugged charger back in but laptop wont start.
4. Next I started laptop on the battery, went to BIOS and checked if the charger is recognized in the BIOS. No, it doesn't recognize charger. So, if it is not a charger then what else can it be?
5. Laptop doesn't have any strange smells so I'm not sure if anything happened with the motherboard, but I would assume mother board is ok because it works of the battery.

Hi CJ777,
Thanks for reaching out with your query. You pretty much figured out all points of failure. Good job.
If the adapter is not detected in BIOS, it most likely is an issue with the mother board. In the BIOS set up, AC adapter should show up as 65w or 90w. If the adapter status is 'None' or 'Unknown Device Installed', it indicates that the mother board is not detecting the adapter for which the battery is not getting charged. Once the battery charge drains, I'm sure the adapter will not charge it again. Replacing the system board should resolve this issue.

Hi,

Any ideas on this issue would be really appreciated, as i have no idea where to start:

Since a few days ago every time I power on my laptop, it displays the initial dell screen, a loading bar fills up and then the screen goes black. At this point the Windows (XP SP3) loading screen would normally appear, but the screen stays black indefinitely.

Note that it looks black in the way that screens look black when they are on but not displaying anything, and not like when it is powered down.

I had a lot of hard drive failures earlier this year, so replaced the drive in May, for a new Toshiba one, but has been running really well since then. In my experience hard drive failures give me an error screen and not the nothingness I am currently experiencing.

If it points to anything, the battery warning light has recently started flashing, but the laptop is currently plugged in, I have an auxiliary battery in the optical drive bay and the main, 'worn out' battery was lasting for about 40 mins the day prior to this failure.

Again, any thoughts would be much appreciated as I can normally get thing sorted once they have been diagnosed!

Many thanks in advance for your help,

Lewis Moore

Update:
I loaded the boot menu and tried to boot from a windows CD to run diagnostics/repair but the boot failed in a similar fashion to that described above.

I ran pre-boot diagnostics from the boot menu and they all came back fine, it suggested running an extended diagnostics by booting from a dell drivers and utilities CD. Boot failed again.

I tried, however to boot to a linux live CD (Kubuntu 6.0), and the laptop happily booted to the live CD.

Every time my computer starts up it goes through the Dell loading screen before going blank for a little while. Then after a bit it will show the "windows is loading files" bar across the bottom and once it completes I get a split second look at the start of the microsoft logo/animation screen before it loads the default blue wave background with a low-rez cursor that I can move but not interact with. A:Keyboard and mouse will not work after XP boots

The likely problem here is that your keyboard and mouse arent setup in BIOS. If your keyboard/mouse is USB or PS/2, you will need to tell BIOS.

When you boot your machine, keep pressing the 'delete' key. This will get you into BIOS setup. I dont know where u go from there off the top of my head, and i cant find out as i am at work now and on a work machine, but you want to find the menu that lets you specify which connection your Keyboard and Mouse uses. Just browse the different menus, I'm sure this will fix your problem.

Hello.
We purchased a new Dell Inspiron 15 7000 series less than a month ago.
- Last week the screen started flickering. If flickered even at bios/before os. Laptop is dual boot and issue persists in Windows and Linux.
- All windows updates appears to be installed including driver and bios updates (now at 1.2.4) according to the Dell update utility.
- As of this morning the laptop boots to black screen and now is only usable with an external monitor. There are no beeps at boot or visual warnings in Windows. Latest Intel and Nvidia drivers have been installed. Laptop has been restarted several times to no avail. Currently running full diagnostics from F12 at boot. No error found yet and have 3hrs 22 min left.
- I've darkened the room and shone a torch on the laptop screen in case it is just a back light issue but am unable to see anything on the laptop screen, only usable with external monitor. Windows display settings gives the options to extend/duplicate displays so this makes me believe Windows is able to detect the laptop screen.

It sounds like something is wrong with your Windows XP drivers. Something like that happened to me while building my computer, and when I boot up the keyboard did not work because my copy of windows XP was bad. You could try reinstalling windows XP, and It might work better, but I dont have a definite answer to your problem.

(New MSI MEG Ace Z390 MB)

So I had to make some changes to my build after my last MB took a crap. I left my old hard drive in with Windows 7 installed.

In BIOS the mouse and keyboard work just fine. I have them plugged into the USB 2.0 slots, with all the USB options enabled in the BIOS.

When I get to the log in screen on Win7, my M/Kb stop working completely. I understand that new MBs dont want to support Win7, but I need to backup my files and things from my HD before I upgrade to Windows 10.

Is there anything I can do to get them working? Maybe somehow installing some sort of driver from a USB stick?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello thanigai777 and welcome to TSF,

Did you install the second XP on a separate partition or on the same partition?

If you can still boot into the old installation, I would like you to perform a clean boot.

How to configure Windows XP to start in a "clean boot" state

This will disable all non-Microsoft tasks and services from running. If the KB/M work, then we can take further steps to narrow down the cause.

A few days ago I was prompted to install an urgent BIOS update.  I followed the screen prompts and the system rebooted and flashed the BIOS.  Our company laptops all have Sophos encryption, which requires a separate login prior to booting the OS (Win7).  I've always been able to enter user ID and password information on that screen using the USB keyboard connected to my OneLink+ dock (which is connected to the laptop). Following this BIOS update, I can no longer use the keyboard or mouse (also USB) connected to the OneLink+ dock until the OS boots.  I have to open my laptop, enter my Sophos ID and password on the laptop keyboard, then close the laptop.  Once the OS (Win7) boots, I can use both the USB devices fine.  Interestingly enough, the monitor attached to the OneLink+ dock functions just fine before the OS boots up. I checked BIOS settings and couldn't see anything there that looked odd or out of place.  I also checed Device Manager to see if there were any warnings or issues, and didn't see anything. I tried to downgrade the BIOS to an earlier version, but once you are above 1.23 that is not possible.  I did flash to the latest release - 1.27 - but that did not fix the issue. So I'm stuck with a rather awkward login process which was not an issue until this BIOS version was installed a few days ago.  I've reviewed other post for similar issues but have not found anything that points at a solution thus far... A:Laptop (Win7 Dell Inspiron 1525) won't connect to desktop (XP Dell) wireless router

Sometimes, you need to replace the router.
Sometimes, you can call your service provider and ask them to take a look on line to see if the subscription needs to be refreshed.
But often, all that is needed (despite the fact that it is a lot of work) is to uninstall your existing system, then reboot, and reinstall everything.
You might also find success by looking at your device manager in Windows to see if you have any grey, red, or yellow flags by any related device. That may show you have a permanent hardware failure if you cannot restore it, then you are off to the store or your provider for a new cable modem or router.

I have a three years old Dell Inspiron 530 desktop (no warranty left).

Couple of weeks back what I did:
1. Suddenly the CPU fan started speeding with noise
2. Opened and cleaned the video card (ATI Radeon) fan which accumulated some dust
3. Also cleaned the CPU fan and put some thermal paste between CPU and fan base which was almost dry
4. The fan speed and noise was gone (fixed) and everything worked fine again

Two weeks later... new problem encountered again:
1. The computer doesn't boot up
2. When power turned on (front switch), the keyboard and mouse LEDs flashes momentarily and stay turned off
3. The front power switch stay solid blue

4. No beep sound heard (beep code is HERE)

6. Monitor stays dark (tried also with the onboard video monitor pins), nothing come up (no BIOS, no DELL logo, absolutely nothing)

Test done so far:

Dear all,

I have had this laptop for over 3 years now and I found that one day, when I switched it on, the HDD light, the num, caps and scroll lock lights all lit and then 2 seconds later, they stopped. The power light was left on however. I could hear the fans spinning but nothing booted. The hard drive light was not blinking either, indicating operation. I did some research and tried the PSA alternate boot method (pressing FN and power ON) and there was a led code:

Num lock - flashing
Caps lock - ON (continously)
Scroll lock - OFF

I have tried removing all the components and powering on one by one after removal but this did not work either. I reseated the RAM modules as well in different places but to no avail. I also tried booting from AC supply only with the same results.

Can you help me find out what happened to my laptop? I would be very grateful for ANY response on this urgent matter.

Cheers, Fishpan

A:Dell Inspiron 6000 doesn't boot up!!

I would think that this is a problem with the operating system. I'm not 100% sure, but however, if you want to check, get an hard drive enclosure for $10 - $15 on newegg. Then unplug your hard drive and plug it into the enclosure and plug the enclosure into another computer and see if the OS files are intact. You could also plug your hd into another laptop and see what happens, if it boots, then the problem is not your hardrive.

Hello,

After re-installing Windows 7 on my 1,5 years old Dell Inspiron N5110 laptop, my laptop won't shut down anymore.
The laptop has every symptom of shutting down, it will do all of the updates when there are, the screen will go black after 'shutting down'.
But the laptop will always be making those 'think' noises. Also there are some of the lights still on. After it gets in this 'state', I'm also unable to turn on my laptop again.

It will turn off when I push on my off button for like 5-10 seconds.
But that won't be too good for my laptop doing that all the time...

Now, my laptop will get in sleeping state, but than again.. I can't wake him up again.

Edit: I forgot to say, since a few days, it will just 'turn off' out of nowhere.

Is there anyone who experienced this before, or who can just help me out?
The nice Dell Support won't help me in any other way then by using the phone, but that doesn't seem like a perfect way of solving a problem in my opinion, therefore I'm asking your help.

Hope you get this, my English aint too good.

Thanks,

The first problem that came in was I couldn't log in to windows. Later after the first start up screen it went automatically into safe mode. Now it doesn't even stop in safe mode and stops at loading files. The OS doesn't even start. Tried formatting but new OS installation doesn't go beyond few steps.

I have a Dell Inspiron 2650, whose keyboard has suddenly gone freakish. About half the keys do nothing, while the others give me pop-up windows, bring up the control panel, and various other strange happenings. I tried to run the diagnostic CD that comes with the lappy, but the default selection is run "windows xp" and I can't get the down-arrow to work to select "run from CDRom". I tried booting with a Knoppix 4.0 CD and the keyboard actions are the same as with windows xp from the hardrive. I tried hooking an external keyboard to the mouse/keyboard port on the back and the results there are the same; external keyboard key strokes do weird things similar to internal keyboard. I am looking for some expert advice here because tech support from Dell leaves a lot to be desired.
Thanks,

Skigeezer

Not sure if this is the right forum but, this might sound a bit silly but I've managed to break the spacebar on my DELL Inspiron 1420 laptop keyboard. I spilt some food on the keyboard and was cleaning it and removed the spacebar but for the life of me I can't get it back on. I still have all the pieces (the metal bar, and both parts of both key hinges) but for the life of me can't get it to reattach like I was able with other keys. Usually when reattaching another key I would just press down and it would click in place but can’t seem to get this one to latch on and stay. Any ideas on what I should do to get it back on? Or anyone with the same laptop have any advice for me. I was thinking about taking it to the Geek Squad at Best Buy but after reading reviews have decided not too. I would hate to get a new keyboard just because of this and that I still have all the parts. Anyone have any ideas?

I have an Inspiron N7010 laptop. Running Windows 7, 32bit, professional. It came with the home version, but we upgraded to the professional version so we could connect to our company's domain. I was running wireless. Now I have been moved out of wireless range, but I have an ethernet line dropped. The Inspiron does not recognize the ethernet line. It "looks" like it does not have a driver for it, but I am having difficulty finding one.

Thanking all "ya'll" in advance.

I just purchased a refurbished Inspiron 3147. The computer does not wake from sleep mode. Instead, there is a blip of power and then the system shuts off completely. Some things I have determined through testing and observation:
- The power does come on momentarily. This is confirmed by the flicker of light in the power indicator and the brief charge indicator for a USB connected phone.
- The hard drive does not Shut Down. It just goes dead. I confirmed this by testing a handful of software items, including Open Office, Evernote and Chrome. All had recovery dialogue on restart, though there was no Windows shutdown error dialogue.
- This doesn't matter how sleep mode is initiated. All of my Power Management options are set to Sleep Mode. It happens when I initiate it by closing the laptop lid. It happens when I initiate it through the start menu or charm bar. It happens when I initiate it via the login screen.
There is another issue which may or may not be related and that is the touchpad. I'm given to understand that the touchpad is a real issue with this particular model and I intend to address it in a separate post. For the purposes of this post, I will just say that it will not initiate until I manually go in and disable/reenable the trackpad through the control panel. The trackpad settings are inaccessible on startup through the system tray even though the icon is there and clickable. It just won't load. Sometimes it takes several attempts to load it thr... We bought a low end Dell Inspiron B130 notebook running XP that only came with a 90 day warranty. Sure enough, soon after that 90 days expired, the computer stopped working. It was being used during a storm apparently (while I was out of town) and supposedly there was some power outage even that didn't affect the other computers on the same outlets, but just this Dell notebook stopped working.

When started up, the power and harddrive lights flicker on, and the screen lights up, but nothing loads and the screen stays black. Is there some way I could use a boot disk or reload BIOS or reformat the harddrive, or even figure out if the computer is completely fried or can be resurrected? Any help would be really appreciated, as DELL will have nothing to do with me now that the 90 days is up.

Thanks!

Welcome to TSG...

With what you describe that has happened I would suggest t call Dell and ask them where they suggest that you take the computer for repair and that should be a Dell authorized repair center. You never said how many days past the warranty this is and if it isn't too much after the warranty I would talk to a supervisor about the problem.

THis sounds like something went south, east and west all at the same time. I think a repair shop might be the only way out of this. I really hope I am wrong.

If you have the recovery disks and can set the computer to boot to the CD-ROM drive you might want to try doing a repair if that option is in the recovery disk. I also would try to get into safe mode and try to use some of the diagnostics that are used thru there.

Hello
I have a DELL inspiron 5160 notebook
P4 HT 3.02ghz, 512MB, 40GB
I tried turning it on this morning, and all it does is shows the dell splash screen in the center which loads a bar (I assume its running its POST) it gets 3/4 way through it and restarts over and over again.
It wont let me get into the BIOS either.
I tried removing each hardware @ a time, no luck..I am currently at a point where I only have the MB+RAM+LCD connected and I still get the same problem.
When I removed the RAM, I did not hear any BEEPS

Any help will be gladly appreciated

Thank you
Abdul R Shaikh

A:Dell Inspiron 5160 doesn't boot to windows

Try removing any USB devices you have connected and try again. Other than that, i can only recommend clearing your CMOS. The issue you have sounds a likely issue with the power supply unit, however without actually physically being there it's much harder to diagnose a problem. If you got a spare PSU lying around, give it a try.

I bought a new Inspiron last week and I got a 14" 5458 without a backlit keyboard. I wanted one with a backlit keyboard but the retailer said DELL Philippines ordered a non backlit series. I want to know if I can replace the keyboard? Upon checking there is a slot for the backlit but I am not sure if it is activated on the motherboard. Any thoughts?

Hi eamilo,
The Dell Inspiron 14 5458 is shipped with a Chiclet keyboard. Only Inspiron 5458 Touch screen model ships with a backlight keyboard. You will not be able to replace the existing keyboard to backlit keyboard.

I don't see why it wouldn't have at least 1 PS/2 port, and if so I also don't see why you cna't just plug the keyboard into it. That is what I used to do with my laptop.

According to DELL's website for the Inspiron 5000, it does indeed have a ps/2 port which can be used for either a standard mouse or keyboard. Shouldn't have to do anything but plug it in.

Good luck.

Hello all.  This is my first official post here.  I've have the Dell Inspiron 500M laptop.  It worked great till one day the keyboard stopped responding.  All keys don't respond except for some peculiar situations.  When the computer boots up, the keyboard doesn't respond at all.  Therefore I can't even get into my BIOS even if I wanted too.  Once the computer finishes booting up, I can use the external USB mouse and even the touchpad with no problem.  The keyboard doesn't work at all, no capslock, no numlock, no nothing.  When I start IExplorer and try to type anything: nothing happens but if I hit certain keys in succession, the browser closes and then if I try and restart IExplorer from the shortcut on my desktop or the shortcut in the tool tray, it brings me to the dialogue box where the .exe file is located.  At this point, the touchpad doesn't work partially.  What I mean is the mouse moves if I touch the touchpad but when i tap the touchpad to click on icons, it doesn't respond.  So I have to manually click the left button on the touchpad.  Everything resets when I restart the computer, which I have to do almost everytime to figure out what might be causing the problem.  When restarting the system, the computer beeps atleast 7-9 times in a distinct pattern quickly before showing the Dell logo on screen.
I've contacted Dell support several times and tried troubleshooting the problem with them ... Read more

A:Dell Inspiron Keyboard Problem

Hi,
Unless you are very unlucky and got a bad replacement KBD, it sounds like the KBD controller on the MBD. Are there any signs of a spill ? If not it could have been taken out by static, or you may just be unlucky with it. The MBD costs a lot more than a KBD.........

Hello again,
I've got a customer with what sounds like a memory issue. I want to run Memtest86+ on it, but there is an issue. On bootup, I get "keyboard failure" and I can't enter the BIOS to change the boot device priority so that I can load Memtest86+ from a flash drive or cd. The keyboard works fine once I'm into Windows, but I can't use it before Windows loads.
Things tried:
Reset CMOS.
Unplugged all other usb devices, including card reader internally.
Checked device manager, looks clean.

Thanks for any help.

Thanks in advance for any help.
