Upgrade to windows 8 now unable to access files

Q: Upgrade to windows 8 now unable to access files

I up-graded to windows 8 from windows 7, all has been fine until today when I am no longer able to access my saved documents error message

Preferred Solution: Upgrade to windows 8 now unable to access files

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

A: Upgrade to windows 8 now unable to access files

Hello Salt, and welcome to Eight Forums.

Since this has just happened today, you might see if you may be able to do a system restore using a restore point (if available) dated before this started to hopefully fix it.

Hope this helps,
Shawn

Hi - I have a Dell slimline PC running Windows XP that is slowly losing all functionality. I cannot load IE, Chrome has a message ERR 138 (Access Denied). I am unable to copy files from a USB stick and cannot remove certain programs (er McAfee) using the Add / Remove program utility.

I have run the microsoft mrt.exe which found 4 errors but has made no real difference. Not sure what to do as all advice seems to suggest downloading utilities which is not possible.

Any ideas to help ?

Hi there,
my name is Marius and I will be assisting you with your Malware related problems.

Before we move on, please read the following points carefully.
First, read my instructions completely. If there is anything that you do not understand kindly ask before proceeding.
Perform everything in the correct order. Sometimes one step requires the previous one.
If you have any problems while you are follow my instructions, Stop there and tell me the exact nature of your problem.
Do not run any other scans without instruction or Add/ Remove Software unless I tell you to do so. This would change the output of our tools and could be confusing for me.
Post all Logfiles as a reply rather than as an attachment unless I specifically ask you. If you can not post all logfiles in one reply, feel free to use more posts.
If I don't hear from you within 3 days from this initial or any subsequent post, then this thread will be closed.
Stay with me. I will give you some advice about prevention after the cleanup process. Absence of symptoms does not always mean the computer is clean.
My first language is not english. So please do not use slang or idioms. It could be hard for me to read. Thanks for your understanding.

Please tell us which infections were detected by MRT!

Also, have a look to the following:

I backed up all my files on an external hard drive before I upgraded to windows 7 from Vista, and im trying to copy the files from my external hard drive back on to my laptop and it just doesn't work.

I'm getting the following error message... "you need permission to perform this action, you require permission from administratos to make changes to this file"

Now I have tried...

running net user administrator /active:yes

turning off the UAC,

Changing the folder permissions to allow mysef access etc... as per this website... Fix “You need permission to perform this action” error

Some of the folders im trying to copy are written in green, I think i may of tried to make these folders private or something a few years back, as the other folders seem to copy fine...

Any guidance would be greatly appreciated as I desperately need access to these files...

Thanks

A:Unable to access files copied from Vista on windows 7

If you added an ACL to those files you had originally on your vista machine the SID is lost and the new machine won't recognize ownership or "admin" account(s).

So long story...

This morning, I logged into my computer and noticed that I didn't have my normal "admin" and "guest" accounts. The guest account turned into "Other user" account, and the picture got deleted.

So, I went into the Control panel of the guest account, manually entering the login name as guest. In there, I tried to change the picture and stuff back to what it was, but no luck.

So, I went into the admin account and clicked on the guest account, and editted it from there...Again, no luck, but, there is where my troubles started.

Somehow, this change affected my main Admin account and effectively has locked me out from reaching approx 5,000 photos and 20-30 movies of my 1.5yr old boy.

I went through the whole process of recreating my admin account, thinking that by doing so, it would allow me to keep the old files (since I did say, YES, save files). However, when I attempt to get into those files via the restore, I get the attached errors. I am logged into my machine as an admin...but, it must not be matching up to something in my old admin hashkey?

A:Unable to recover my files - Windows cannot access \\localhost\c$\@gmt

Take Ownership Shortcut

I think that may help your problem accessing the folder.
As for the damage to the accounts, I think you should run
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Hello. I wanted to easily move my files from a hard drive from a computer I was using for Windows 7 pro to another. I basically removed the windows 7 pro hard drive in that computer and placed it in a Sata Dock connected to another computer but when I tried to access the user folder, it said I do not have permission to access the folder. In windows XP this was never a problem. Any suggestions how to bypass this security blocking access to my files so I can move them onto the other computer's hard drive. I didn't use any password on this computer.. I ended up putting the hard drive back in it's original computer and moved files to another hard drive. But it would have been easier to do it the other way around. I would appreciate any help.

Good Evening,

I have an issue that I hope someone in the land of Experts will be able to help me with. I have searched Expert’s Exchange as well as Google and I seem to have a bit of a unique situation.

Yesterday, I began an upgrade of a Windows SP2 computer to SP3. The install appeared to be going well, but after about 75% completion, I received a generic Access Denied message. The computer began to rollback the installation. When the rollback was completed, I allowed the computer to reboot. Upon logging back into the computer with my Domain Admin account, I received the following message:

“Windows cannot load the profile and is logging you on with a temporary profile. Profile will be erased at logout.”

When began to move around the computer, I found that I couldn’t really do anything. I was not able to create any new files or modify existing ones. My first reaction was that the drive permissions were messed up. I ran secedit:

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db secsetup.sdb /verbose

Result: “Unable to read from or write to the database.”

I was able to open the secsetup.inf in Notepad. I figured the problem as in the creation of the secsetup.sdb file. I then modified the command to point to a network drive (which I could write to):

secedit /configure /cfg %windir%\repair\secsetup.inf /db Z:\secsetup.sdb /verbose

Result: Same as before - “Unable to read from or write to the database.”
I then attempted to run System Restore. I found that ... Read more

O.K. guys this is a weird one...

What happened is that one day I went to turn my computer on (XP Home) and it would just sit on the Windows boot screen(ya' know the one where the little orange dash is going)...I thought it was just taking a while to boot but after leaving it there for like 5 minutes I knew something was up...Sooo, naturally I tried to boot into safe mode but that would hang on agp440.sys... At this point I figured I would try the recovery console and just do a repair...NOPE! I booted from my XP Home cd and it does not give me the option for recovery! It says " This computer is already in the process of being upgraded. What do you want to do?" Then it gives me 3 selections...

* To continue the current upgrade press ENTER

*To cancel the current upgrade and install NEW version of windows press F10

*To exit setup without installing press F3

Well thats fine and all but when I press ENTER it says " INF file txtsetup.sif is corrupt or missing status 14"

Setup cannot continue, press any key to exit....

Well I did some googling and the main response to that error was that there was a scratch on the cd... Problem is that my cd is PERFECT and I mean not a scratch on it! I was not shure what to do so I asked around and a friend of mine has a the full version of XP Pro...He said I could go ahead and try it but I would not be able to register it or get any updates unless I buy a valid licence....No problem, I was about to buy XP Pro anyway ... I recently downloaded the SP2 upgrade for XP and am no longer able to copy files, most notably image type files (.JPEG) and also MS Word/Excell files (.doc, .xls) to a CD using the native XP copy function. I haven't realy tried to copy other file types. SOME files will copy but many will not. The message received is " Windows encountered an error when trying to copy this folder. What do you want Windows to do? " Looked on Microsoft pages but was unable to find any discussion or fixes there. Any suggestions? Where to start looking for the problem?

Interesting, the only remotely close documentation is for some types of .doc or rtf files.

I've made the registry edit and for SOME .doc files (not all) I am still left with this error:

Microsoft Word 97 Conversion
unable to load graphics conversion filter. Continue with document conversion?Click to expand...

Hit yes long enough and eventually the text portion of the document will open, but without the graphics.

I don't seem to have a problem copying normal jpegs though.

Hi all,

I have got 3 partitions on my HDD namely C, D and E drive.
C is the windows drive , the other two are normal data storage

drives.
Yesterday when i started the PC, i found that all the folders on my

E drive have become empty and the files which i can see do not work.

Everything on the partition has become useless.

Even though all folders show 0 files, the used disk space is same as

before.

Is it some kind of virus?

One more thing, i tried to system restore. When i reached the system

restore screen, i found out that all my restore points are gone and

i cant restore my PC to any earlier date, even though i have

assigned nearly 20% of each disk for creating restore points.
Even the calendar in system restore screen wont show a previous

month except the current month.

Can any one find a solution to fix this.
Atleast tell me a way to restore my PC to an earlier date somehow

without system restore.

Thanks in advance.....

av.exe deleted, but unable to access any .exe files
A file called AV.exe accessed my computer and was caught by Norton, and deleted. I don't know if that has anything to do with this issue, but recently I have been unable to access any .exe files on my computer. The programs all work, I can pull up Firefox, IE, Wordperfect, etc.; but to make it work, I have to pull them up using a document. When I try to access it directly, I get a box telling me to choose which program I want to use to open the file, followed by a list of programs.

Example: I try to open Firefox directly. The box comes up: "Choose the program you want to use to open this file:
File: Firefox.exe"
Right at the top of the list is Firefox, and if I click there, it works.

I can also open .exe files from a dos prompt, just not from Windows.

It has also messed around with a couple of settings. Nothing major, but I personally deactivated the "trackpad click" where it clicks if you tap it. That has been reactivated, and the scroll bars on the side of the trackpad have been disabled. Like I said, though, no major changes that I've found other than that.

I saw something about this previously on here, but I didn't see whether it was resolved or not. It said to download and run dds and GMER. I've done that but it won't let me attach the attach file or the GMER file, because I've attached them to a different thread. I purchased Bit Defender Internet Security for my XP machine a few weeks back and began having issues with the firewall being disabled. Their tech support said to uninstall the software, and install it again. While doing the uninstall it threw an exception saying it encountered an issue, and died locking me out of my program files directory.

Is there any simple way to gain access to this directory? And yes I am setup as an administrator.

Also my wife is an admin and her profile has no problem accessing this directory.

A:Unable to access program files...

Hi there,

Belive the issue will be with security settings. Logon as your wife and go to windows file explorer. Right click the program files directory and click on properties, click on the security tab. Make sure that the administrators group has full acces along with the system account. Also check that users have read access. You may also have an account called power users, make sure they have read and write permissions.

Apply this then click on the advanced settings. On the permissions screen click "Replace permissions on all child objects....".

Click apply. If windows shows any errors with applying these setting you may need to click the owner tab in the advanced section and set the administrators account as the owner. Also click the tick box replace owner on subcontainers and objects. Then try the pirmissions part again.

Hope this helps

You site was recommended as a reliable place to come to look for help with regards to a possible infection. Some feel that the cause of my unique problem may be the result of a virus.

I am a member of an online group of aviation simulation enthusiasts. There are many sites out there that offer acess to thousands of user contributed files to enhance the hobby on simulated flying. I have been an avid member at one such site for several years, and have only now began to experience issues with downloading their files from their web based FTP server.

I am able to access the websites file library, and make a selection. It takes me to a pre fetch page and advises me my download will begin in a few moments. At the moment the connection tries to access the FTP server, I quickly get this error in my default Firefox (32.0.1) browser:

It asks me to try again, and I do so several times within minutes, over hours, over days and over months. I am not successful! I try it on another browser, Torch ... and get similar results but with a less elaborate error message.

No data received.

In an effort to diagnose, I tried Internet Explorer, and get this error:

I'm having a pretty major issue with Skydrive on Windows 8.1. A vast majority of my files are unopenable from Explorer (or the Modern UI app which seems to just open them through explorer in the end anyway). When I try to open one of these files, I receive an error message titled "1 Interrupted Action" and displaying the message:

An unexpected error is keeping you from copying the file. If you continue to receive this error, you can use the error code to search for help with this problem.

Error 0x80040A41: No error description available

I have yet to find anything even resembling a solution when I search for that error code. The options this error window gives me is to "Try Again" which presents a typical explorer progress bar that never goes anywhere or to "skip" or "cancel" which do the same thing. Essentially this means that I have to use the skydrive web client to download the file to some other location locally and then edit and reupload from there. As far as I can tell there also isn't a traceable logic to what files are going to be accessible and which ones are not. I could literally be just finished working on a file, save it, and have it inaccessible when I try to reopen it. This error has not improved or changed at all by my making any files "available offline" or "available online-only" (in fact clicking those options doesn't seem to actually change their Availability ... This appears to be an ongoing problem with Windows 8.1 though it may help to Go into the Sky Drive metro app, and access the settings from the Charm bar. (Charm Bar -> Settings -> Options) The only option is to "access all files offline" which may help sync the files.

The threads on this problem go on forever so it may be server problem on Msoft's end. The links to the right may also be helpful.

Hi! I own a Toshiba Qosmio x300(running on Vista home premium x64) and recently my oldest laptop, HP (windows XP pro x32), died from overheating.
Lucky for me, the hdd is still alive as I have some VERY important files on it (Work related)
The problem is that I cannot retrieve them:
here's exactly what I did:
I inserted my HP's hdd into my Toshiba.

(tried booting from XP but could not start windows since it seems to crash after the loading screen with the XP logo) (Also tried booting in safe mode, but same result)

So, I booted successfully from vista.
when I try to access the "My Documents" folder of the windows XP administrator account from windows vista, it says: Access denied.

I tried also making an administrator account from vista(exact name, case sensitive and same password) hoping to achieve success but no such luck.. I tried various software unlockers but none of them worked

any ideas would be very much appreciated!!

A:Unable to access files from previous OS! Please help!

Hello GKahn,

Welcome to Vista Forums.

Have you tried this yet? Context Menu - Take Ownership

Generally the problem is that the permissions are give to a particular ID and the new account has a new ID thus even though the name/password is the same the system still recognizes it as a different account. If that doesn't work, we can delve deeper.

Hope this helps.

Hey guys,
I have received several BSOD's, most of them being of the
DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL variety. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit on a Gateway NV54 Laptop. I received my first BSOD while running a ton of programs, which lead me to believe either the RAM sticks are shot, or the fan isn't working. I will update with more BSOD information and add a dmp file if I can. Sadly, I can't stay logged into windows for longer than 3 minutes, otherwise the computer crashes. Here is the most recent error message:
"

I've done that and attached the attach file and the GMER.txt file.

Okay I just had to reinstall XP ( ), after wasting tons of time, me being stupid, I set the computer name as my innitials (which I use as a user account), so I had to use another name to login with, but the problem is I set up permissions back in the day so no one else could view my files. Is there anyway to get into my old stuff (it is the settings I want). Maybe if I could 'recreate' the old account, would it let me into it? Or is there a way to completely bypass the security on the directory (c:\documents and settings\aj).

I was going to try booting up from the XP disc again, and copying the directory, but I'm not sure if the permissions will copy as well, making my efforts in vain.

Any ideas?

I recently built a new system with the primary hard drive running Vista. I hooked the HDD from my old XP system up, but for some reason could not access the files in \Documents and Settings\MyAccount. I can access all the other files on the drive except those, and I am completely unable to change the Security settings so that I can grant myself access.

I Googled my problem, and have tried fixes like using a program called Unlocker (which did absolutely nothing) and trying to take ownership via the GUI and the command prompt (didn't work). One site referred me too http://www.petri.co.il/add-take-ownership-context-menu-vista.htm, a registry edit that makes taking ownership via the command prompt on available on the right-click menu .This method allowed me to open the the folders, which I couldn't do before, but I still don't have permission to open any files.

I figured that I could just boot my XP drive and move the files over when I had permission, but when I tried I got a blue screen as the OS starts to load. So that's out.

Any advice would be extremely helpful.

Hello,
I have a directory of hidden, encrypted files through EFS on a network share. I regularly access these files everyday, but after the weekend I could no longer open those files. Nothing has changed in terms of hardware, software, or configuration to Windows.
No password changes, certificate expiration, profile migration, or other events have occurred recently; this happened over the weekend when server updates were being done. I simply get a message that I do not have write permission and to contact my own user
for permission. I have full control, made myself a local admin, and am the file owner of all files in this encrypted directory.
I believe the problem is due to a certificate issue but am not sure: the thumbprint for my personal EFS cert does not match the thumbprint listed under the file properties of these encrypted files. Is it possible my certificate was somehow changed on the
network share? I am not sure how to proceed from here, other than contacting a domain admin to possibly restore the files using the recovery certificate.
Any help is appreciated.

Hey everyone,

I'm looking for help with an issue I've been having with an old HD from my last PC which failed on me. I'm trying to get all of my files back by loading the HD into a USB docking station and accessing the files through my Windows 7 Starter netbook. The old PC had Vista Home Premium 32bit and I had a User with a password.

Upon loading up the HD externally, I managed to take about half of my files off of it and all seemed well. Then I found out lots were missing. I have enabled Folder Options>Show Hidden, and disabled the hiding of protected files as advice I read to try and find them. However, the files are nowhere to be found.

When I go to My Computer, the E: drive says it has 223GB of 294GB (70.2GB used), and analysing it with TreeSize does not help me find out where ~10GBs of my data has gone.
All of my personal files were located in a folder on the desktop of my User, which is now empty. Where might they have gone? Is the fact that there was a password an issue? (Some folders on it have a lock icon and give me an error 'Location is unavailable', 'not accessible', 'access denied'). Could my HD have just corrupted when my PC failed?

Thanks in advance!
Cheers

Hi, A while ago I updated my PC from XP (where I was using outlook express) to windows 7 and office 2007.
To migrate the personal folders I had to move them from outlook express to outlook (XP). Then using windows transfer installed the folders on office outlook 2007.
I now need to do a clean install of windows 7 and outlook, so I wanted to make sure the files were copied before going further.
In outlook I went to file-open-outlook data file, double clicked outlook.pst and up poped the outlook today calender??
So I tried selecting: file-datafile manager - select personal folder outlook.pst - click open folder. Outlook.pst is displayed as per screen shot the file is there but I am unable to open it. The file is not read only. and I am signed on as administrator. I do not want to use windows tranfer as I have also noticed I have two sets of all folders as per screen shot.
Hope this makes sense.

First let's try to fix the problem!

Is it a blink cursor, or do you mean mouse pointer? Is it on top left of screen?
just after bios screen, or do you see win7 animated logo?

I recently had to repair my Windows 2000 installation following a "Blue Screen" stop error and used an Emergency repair disk to get it running again. Since this repair I have been unable to access my spreadsheets contained in my work folder and get the same error message for each file in that folder: "Unable to access read-only file filename.xls".

I have checked the properties of these files and their attributes are set as read only, files in other folders can be opened with no problem. My work folder is on my second hard drive and is a sub directory of the "My Documents" folder, I have a shortcut to it in the Start menu and usually access this folder from there.

I believe that the repair to Windows 2000 has somehow altered the permissions affecting access to this folder - any ideas?

I was an idiot and I thought that somehow going to properties > security to a bunch of important files would somehow make them more safe to a potential hacker who gained access to my computer. I was probably in some alternate mental state when I did this.

Anyway after changing my PC Name and being unable to access them I changed my PC name back to what it originally was thinking that would solve the problem and lo and behold it didn't. I have been browsing the internet for the past 45 minutes (quite litterally) in trying to figure this out and I have done pretty much about everything possible through the context menu and also use of the takeown command in cmd. I have tried taking ownership through advanced security tab and yet I still get denied. my current pc name is clearly listed, in fact all users which is just system, my current pc name and my old pc name are all showing as allowed in all the checkboxes, so from what I can see I have permission but its not allowing me to access it.

I also read a previous thread on here where the OP was told that he will never be able to access the file again without the key, now noting I didn't backup or create any key when I was in my altered mental state however unlike him, I did not reformat my OS. So I would think that theoretically there must be some way I can access it.

Hey there,

I've had this persistent problem since the beginning of January. Every time I try to open files/folders in, say, my documents, in shared folders, etc. my computer freezes and doesn't bounce back. I've let it sit for almost two hours to see if it'd work itself out, but it never does. This correlates with my Firefox browser freezing during random intervals and causing my entire system to lock up. I recall installing Adobe Photoshop CS3 around the same time this started happening, but I'm not sure if it's something that could cause this kind of reaction. I also have the addon "ljlogin" installed on Firefox, but thus far, I haven't found any discussions to imply that ljlogin could be detrimental to my system. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling firefox with all of the necessary updates. That made a difference for about two weeks, but now it's acting up again. It's also really hard to uninstall/reinstall things because the system locks up.

It's really tough not being able to access my files, but I can browse on Google Chrome without any issue (Unless I try to upload files from my PC). Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!
