Preferred Solution: My mozilla will just open with about 50 random websites open & someone keeps taking over my computer

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

I have an older Dell running XP. Would like to wipe the operating system and do a clean install but have some programs I no longer have install disks for so I can't. Tried to complete the Preperation Guide. Defrogger worked fine. DDS would not run and it just gave me an output file full of gibberish. I tried to attach the text file but it was too large. Since DDR wouldn't run, I downloaded Hijackthis and have posted the log file instead. GMER ran fine, (took a long time) and I've attached the log file.

Any help getting this machine cleaned up will be appreciated. Thanks!!

Pre:
I installed Daemon Tools Lite, and unfortunately it installed a bunch of programs with it.. I deleted about 3-4 programs which infected mostly my web browser (Chrome)

Problem:
When I open new tabs, random webpages open up (about 2-3) for sketchy websites like "you must upgrade/update chrome!" or "click here to win"  etc..
Currently running:
Windows 7 Home Premium

Tried:
I installed avast free and ran a full system scan with no avail.
Checked programs to uninstall and nothing suspicious is listed

I'd rather not re-format my hard drive if possible.

Edit**

Looks like this happens only when I open a certain website... which when opened from other computers do not have ads..

For some reason this one website has adds injected into it and even when i  just click white space new tabs pop up.. Also lots of text are green highlighted with pop up ads when hovered over the text.
Some ads say hosted by "keyplayer ads"  or something.

Edit**2

Okay it looks like i figured it out. Looks like it was some simple sort of malware, but after performing everything on this website.. http://malwaretips.com/blogs/malware-removal-guide-for-windows/  it looks like one of those applications worked..
Performing them while not in safe mode seemed to have done nothing, so i think it was key running them in safe-mode.
Otherwise it was interesting that only one si... Read more

I have tried to run all kinds of Malware removal tools like Spybot, Windows Malware Removal, CWShredder, Avast and some minor threats were removed but the major problem remains

Computer has been having problems for about a month now, but it has only gotten truly bad within the last 2 weeks or so.Recently whatever virus is on here has been minimizing current windows or programs and opening random websites, it makes it impossible to play games or use the internet with the constant minimization. For the last month or so AVG has been finding at least one trojan almost daily. However, in the last 2 weeks things have escalated. I ran an AVG scan 2 days ago which turned up about 6 trojans. AVG cleared those and I went through my computer and removed any program that I didn't recognize or didn't use, including internet explorer which seemed to be the browser that the virus used to open websites. That seemed to help for a day, but today it got worse, minimizing programs with increased frequency. Instead of opening websites I am treated to sound-clips that I would expect to hear from advertisements on websites, "congratulations, you've won!" is its favorite, but I've also heard a guitar riff and as I'm typing this the theme from Super Mario is playing. An AVG scan today revealed 6 more trojans, 3 trojan droppers, and a trojan downloader.Below is a log from a HiJack This scan. UC Berkeley student and I'm supposed to be writing my thesis which is due soon (tomorrow actually), but am instead entirely inconvenienced by all the computer virus issues I'm running into. I need a solution SOON. I downloaded Avast while in Safe Mode and then had it run prior to restarting my laptop in regular mode and that seemed to solve the bulk of my issues. I've tried everything, including various scanners like Avast, Win Patrol, SpyDoc, ComboFixer, GoRedFix, and more but many don't catch whatever it is and others that do detect it just can't seem to get rid of it...I had a huge mess of problems and I think they are solved except for these: 1-Google searches are redirected, unless I "ctrl" click cashe several times at once. In that case usually one of the pages will be a proper page instead of a scam search site or a random junk site.2-OpenOffice docs aren't opening. (They did right after I first ran Avast, but not any more.)3-This virus somehow crept over to my boyfriend's computer. He hadn't downloaded any programs all month, but yesterday his Google searches began being redirected too and his computer exhibits everything I mentioned in problem 1 but not 2. All of this started for me a weeks and 2 days ago. My professor said I needed to submit my thesis in Word 2003 which I don't have and haven't needed throughout all of my time at UC Berkeley, and really won't really need again after I graduate. A classmate showed me that he got his MS Word from iso... Read more

Hello everybody,

The patient is a Dell Inspiron 9300 Laptop with 512MB Ram, 60GB HD 40% free, Windows Media Center Edition, SP3. When I open "my Computer" it takes almost two minutes to show drives and icons. I have run Combofix and an AVG full scan. It was slightly infected and now clean. Still does it. I've removed all non-essential software, turned off almost all autoruns, done a defrag and a drive C:\ "cleaning" I ran it through CCleaner and Advanced Windows Care. for the most part it's pretty well behaved and operational. Virtual memory is set to 1024/2048. What is that little flashlight working on so hard when I open My Computer?

Thanks,

A:"My Computer" Taking a very long time to open

Open up Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del) and click on the Processes tab
Click on the View menu item, then on Select columns.
Place a check mark next to I/O Reads and click OK to accept the changes.

Then stretch out the Task Manager window so you can see all the columns.
Double click on the column header (to sort by that column) and then open My Computer and see what processes spike the highest.
You can do this for the I/O Reads column, the Memory column, and the CPU column.

Also, do you have any mapped network drives that no longer exist? That is another reason for a long delay - the system is searching for network resources that no longer exist.

hello,
After freaking out about my system fix virus, I was able to find a link to your website. However, I was unable to read all of the required things i should know before doing anything as i simply wanted this virus gone. So I ran the malware removal program, and also used the combofix. After reading some posts on here i now see that perhaps i should not have done so. Either way the computer is somewhat functunal and at least now i can access all of my music pictures etc etc. The problem I have is that when I use a search engine like Yahoo or Google, it provides mne a list of links as expected but when I click on said links they take me to bogus websites. Any help would be appreciated, and again I am sorry for posting my combofix log in a place it did not belong. thanks again

Hello and Welcome to Bleeping Computer!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

About four days ago, "Windows Antivirus 2011" randomly appeared on my computer while I was working, and began running a scan. I knew it was fake, so I ran Malwarebytes, which recognized it and removed it. Ever since then, there's been three major problems:1) My computer has slowed down noticeably. 2) I can no longer open programs normally (by just double clicking on them). Either nothing happens, or I get an error message that says "Application not found." If I right click and "Run as administrator," though, the programs open fine (although slowly).3) While on the web, using Firefox, sometimes new Firefox sessions will randomly popup, at least five new windows at a time that I have to quickly close to prevent more from popping up (I've tried just letting them keep popping up, and it seems to go on indefinitely). These new sessions always have the same three tabs, with complete nonsense URLs such as:"http://www.xn--i-4fa.xn--1cam/%C2%A8%C3%B7_%C2%AF%C3%95%C2%BA%C3%81#%16?uV%C2%A7%C3%BC%C3%8B%C3%B7%06%C5%BD%0F%06N%C3%A6%1A%16H%0B+%14%E2%80%9A%1D%C3%B4%29G%C3%A2[%E2%80%BA%C3%BC%C3%93:oi%C3%86%C2%AC%E2%82%AC"In addition to these problems, today (the fourth day since that first fake antivirus appeared) upon startup my computer had to run some self repairing mechanism in order to get to my desktop, which took about 15 minutes. The same fake antivirus has actually come up another time since that first time four days ago, and similarly I... Well, I reset the system to a System Restore that was quite old, and the renaming of folders problem seems to have gone away (at least for now). However, what is really bothering me is that IE11 is keeping track of every file I open on my computer, and when I click on the entry in History, it opens the file!

I have disconnected the computer from the internet, but desperately need help in terms of what to do!!!

I had XP Antivirus 2012 on my computer initially, and was able to fix it by following directions. However, then another "Security Protection" virus got onto the computer. I followed all directions from the bleepingcomputer.com tutorial, but it still did not fix the problem. When I start the computer and it loads normally lots and lots of blank windows pop up repeatedly on the desktop. Whenever I try to start any program an error message pops up saying that some part of a file is missing, no matter what program I try to open.

to BC.We'll begin with thisStep 1.ComboFix:Download ComboFix from one of these locations:Link 2Link 3* IMPORTANT !!! Save ComboFix.exe to your DesktopDisable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. Here is a howto for some of the applications.
They may otherwise interfere with our tools

Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.

As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. Hi

I am based in the UK and a total novice at this stuff.
We found, almost overnight that our main PC had suddenly started to download web pages much slower than usual and all efforts have not improved matters so far. So what ever help can be offered will be really welcome.
Our laptop which connects via the router which the problem PC is "hard-wired" to is lightning fast by comparison.
MY ISP is TALKTALK who recommend a MSS of 1392 & a MTU of 1432.

We use the latest version of Firefox as a browser. We have downloaded Chrome and this is no better.
It is as though it has to think about it before it starts to download and can take up to a minute for some pages to open.

We have run adaware and ccleaner along with kaspersky internet security 2010 scans.
We have tried it in safe mode with the kaspersky switched off.
I have hard wired the laptop to the router (a huawei echolife 520b) that the pc is conected to (rather than it's usual wireless connection) but that works fine.

The main pc is an XP home edition SP3 and we have 2GB of RAM.

Any help will be really welcome

Thanks

You could try setting your MTU to 1396.

Hi everybody

I picked up some nasty malware. AVG was updating and suddenly everything just fell apart.

I can't run any installation programs regardless of the extension or name. I've tried to install Rkill and MalwareBytes with absolutely no luck. It defaults to needing to be unblocked in the properties and no matter what compatibility mode I use it will not run. I get a 1084 error when I try to open the security center. In the taskbar I have an Action Center alert that says 1 Important Message and 3 Total Messages. The Action Center will not open at all. I do not have access to a USB key as I am not home, but I will be Tuesday evening. Any help would be infinitely appreciated.

Other notes I forgot: I'm on Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit, and I am constantly getting errors that Windows can't load and needs to be repaired. It runs and restarts, sometimes being repaired and other times not.

Thanks a lot
Jared

A:Action center won't open, Internel Explorer only browser that will open, no MalwareBytes and RKill will not open

An update.

I've tried running MalwareBytes and RKill from a flash drive which is also not working. Windows also ends up unable to load, the startup repair runs and things work fine. Not long after Windows tries to update and then it becomes unable to load again and the startup repair runs again.

I tried running a registry fix for the .exe problem and I get an error stating that the registry is being used even when no programs are running and I am in safe mode.

Hope this information helps
thanks
Jared

I have re-installed Mozilla twice after uninstalling the old system and now when I try to run it fails to do anything regardless of whether I try I try to start from a shortcut or click directly on Mozilla.exe. This started several days ago when I suddenly started getting fonts displayed that I could not change and which were quite different from what I wanted. That led me finally to uninstall, and re-install Mozilla 1.7.11, copy of the installation for which I had saved. I re-installed twice without effect, then downloaded Mozilla 1.7.13 and installed it after wiping clean any Mozilla references I could find. The uninstall log shows that everything loaded okay but I had no final acknowledgement during the installation process or instructions to restart, etc.

Anyone have suggestions?

Incidentally, it is installed on Windows XP Home Edition

Is this possible? If so, I'd greatly appreciate directions.

Foolishly I installed Windows 7 SP1 Update on my kid's Toshiba Mini Notebook yesterday. They have Win 7 Starter.

It locked the whole desktop and all of the programs as insufficient permissions.

Uninstalled WIN 7 SP1 this morning and now everything except Thunderbird is back to normal .... I think?

However I try to open Thunderbird I cannot open it fully as an administrator. Not quite true, occasionally at random is does open properly but 9/10 it opens with no Help menu and no access to the email folders etc.

Any body have any clues on how to fix this?

Urgent help would be appreciated before they get back from School Camp and kill me.

For the last month, I have been constantly dealing with an issue that is apparently very common for Firefox. Every now and then, I will try to open the browser and it simply will not do do. In the task bar, the icon will glow but then wll fade away.

The fix to this problem is simply uninstalling and re installing Firefox. However, that never works for long. I have had to do this at least a dozen times over the past month. It is frustrating to the point where I have started using Chrome again, which has it's own problems.

Does anyone know of a permanent solution to this problem, or at the very least what the cause is?

Thanks.

Hi everyone,

This is my first post and I am not sure if I am in the right place, but hopefully I can get pushed in the right direction. Today I downloaded a toolbar from a website called Cafemom that is compatible with Mozilla Firefox. After it downloaded I went to restart firefox and it won't open. I went ahead and opened the task manager while I tried to open firefox and I saw sysfader very quickly pop up on the applications portion and then it disappeared. Then when I checked processes it shows that firefox is running-but I don't see it anywhere! I tried uninstalling and re-installing firefox but nothing is working.

I have avast antivirus and I just made sure everything was up to date and I ran a boot scan. In addition to that I tried to run spybot search and destroy and about halfway through running it my computer shuts down completely.

Any ideas?

Hello, Welcome to SF,

Follow this link Default Programs - Associate a File Type or Protocol and make sure HTTP, HTTPS are associated with Mozilla Firefox in Default Programs then try to open the link and see what happens.

On my laptop when I try to load IE or Mozilla the program opens but won't load webpages, even though my wireless connection states connected and signal strength 'excellent'. Using the phone line I get the same thing.

Hi,

I think I've picked up an infection on my computer. I am using Windows XP and FireFox browser. When I click on google search results I am redirected to a different page. However, if I copy and past the web address into the browser it takes me to the correct website.

I tried to run Spybot S&D, but it would not open. I reinstalled it, but still no luck. I have also tried to run Malwarebytes' Anti Malware and SuperAntispyware. I can install them, but they will not run.

I have tried loading Windows in safe mode to access the antispyware programs, but my computer keeps freezing and crashing before it gets to the desktop screen.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hello all,

I had this problem a while ago and thought it had stopped, but only for a hour or so.

I will give you an example, I go to start and click on my documents, the folder will take around 45 seconds to open. However the folders in my documents open instantly. Folders on my desktop take ages. Control panel takes ages, and when I try to use xps search utility nothing happen and the taskbar freezes for 15 seconds. This is very strange I cant work out why it is doing it.

I have tried in safe mode and I dont have this problem, and I dont have a XP CD to do something about file security like someone said. (My hd is partitioned with the OS install on (Stupid HP)).

Any Ideas this is killing me!!

A:Folders taking time to open

Not much I can suggest without an XP cd. The System File Checker (SFC) may be what you were referring to.
Only thing I can suggest is try updating all your dirvers, and make sure the system is up-to-date with SP2 and all the critical updates.
Also make sure the system is virus/malware free.
Other than that theres not much you can do, not even a Repair Install. It sounds as if your system files are corrupt.

Hi,

I posted here last month and thought the problem was resolved, but again, Firefox is running very slowly. It's taking over three minutes for a page to open, then I don't know how long for the home page to load. IE opens quickly enough, but the home page took over 2 minutes to load. Avast may have held things up, as I got a pop up message asking if it was ok to let avast run, but even after I allowed it, it still took over one minute for the home page to open. Chrome opens right away, and for the most part loads right away, except once last night, where it took approx two minutes to load a home page.

The last time this occurred, I had spy ware, so I'm wondering if I am picking this up somewhere I don't suspect, or have some vulnerability still.

Here's my sysinfo:

I have recently started having problems opening big projects. I use nuendo and cubase for music production and sometimes I have to wait 15minutes for a project to open is there anything that might be causing this.

My biggest fear and first thought was that it was the RAM I have recently brought and installed. It should be compatible, it is the Kingston KVR400x64C3A/512, I have two of these and two infineon 256mb 333 which came installed. I have them running in dual channel (i think) with the kingstons in slots 1 & 3 and the Infineons in 2 & 4.

I have recently setup a dual boot system and stripped this OS down to the bare minimum, and have set page filing to 0 which may or may not be involved.

If anyone can hel it would be very much appreicated as it is cutting my work rate and causing alot of frustration

My motherboard is the Augsburg 915GV (Similar to Intel D915GVWB) (from what I can gather anyway)

A:Programs taking ages to open??

Hey,

Remove the Infineon modules and try opening the program with just the other two remaining modules. You should never mix RAM density's and in particular manufacturers, all modules running in dual channel should be purchased as 'kits' - meaning they are practically guaranteed to work together on a compatible motherboard.

You should always have page filing enabled and given a quota of atleast 300mb or so, this will guarantee that performance is at maximum when you're running memory intensive programs. If doing the above fails, next try defragging your drive to minimise access times on your disk for the any programs or data you currently have installed.

Nick.

this tech-know-nuthin' desperately needs help from one of you technowizards...

it's taking over 2 minutes for any of my documents to open!

all was fine till i opened a document emailed from someone whose docs worked ok before... when i saved the latest one from that person to my desktop, it took forever to open and close... after that, all my own docs also took minutes to either open or close, as well...

i've:
deleted that doc and emptied the trash,
emptied my sent email file and trash stored on the puter,
dumped a huge number of files after saving them to a cd,
emptied the trash,
done a full norton scan and windoc repair 3x and an ad-aware scan/repair 3x,
restarted afterwards,
let it rest overnight,
but still have the prob...

my file folders and final draft program docs open as quickly as ever, but the windows docs take 2 minutes or more and it's driving me nuts!... and while they're trying to open, everything else either freezes or takes an age to work, as well...

another weird thing is that the doc page sent as an attachment that may have caused this didn't have a ruler showing and when i opened my own doc pages, the ruler had disappeared from all of them, too!... the only way i could get it back was to drag the ruler icon to my toolbar and click on it after opening the rulerless docs...

any suggestions?
love and fingers crossed hugs, maia
