Q: Disk Management generates error

When ever I try to open Disk Management, it is generating error "An internal error occurred. Restart the Disk Management snap-in." Few days ago I think I disable few of the services, then the problem has been seen. Hope to get some solution.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I was trying to do some cleanup on my system and needed to rearrange my drive letters. Tried to open Disk manager and an error popped up that said "dependency service or group failed to start." I checked to make sure that the appropriate services were running and tried Disk Manager again. Now it was showing my drives.

Got out of Computer Management all together and then went back into Disk Management to verify my settings had taken. I got the same error again and could not see my drives, I exited Computer management and again went back into DM and my drives were now listed again.
Can anybody explain the sporadic behavior?

I installed Windows 7 on my Sony VGN-TZ170.It installed beautifull and detected most of my software.  There is, however, one "unknown device"  I thought it had something to do with the card reader so I installed the driver for that from sony.  It installed and rebooted.  everything seemed fine unitl I opened computer managment.  Then I get the error:CompMgmtLauncher.exe - No DiskX There is no disk in the drive.  Please insert a disk into drive \device\harddis2\dr4.Options are to Cancel - Try again - Continue.  Try again and continue do not work.If i click cancel a few times I can eventually use the computer managment. I have a single 100GB hd.

A:no disk error in computer management

After you get to Computer Management is the Unknown Device gone? Was it the card reader?  If so then most likely will require a driver update from Sony.  Could try uninstalling the driver and reinstalling it with Vista Compatibility Mode. ~Alex T.~Windows Desktop Experience MVP~

Hi all, I am hoping someone would be able to help me out on this problem. I'm running Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit.

Problem:
Windows detects my external HDD but doesn't show up in My Computer. Drive is detected in Disk Management, indicated as "not initialized". When I try to initialize the drive, it gives me the following error,

"The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error"

What I've tried doing:Do a clean instll of windows - Don't work
Uninstall external HDD driver, turned off power, turn it back on again, reinstalled driver - don't work
Tested the same external HDD on another Windows 7 system - No problems, detected and able to access
Tried plugging on different ports - Don't work

After hours of searching through the web and reading forums, I realized that this is quite a commonly faced issue. Thank you.

A:Unable to initialize external HDD in Disk Management due to I/O error

Control panel -> Administrative tools -> Event Viewer

Click on the caret > next to WINDOWS LOGS. Then click on SYSTEM. There ought to be a traced event of some kind with a physical I/O error.

Hi All,

I've recently ran into an almost identical problem that was described (but not resolved) in this thread.

In my case, the drive worked perfectly with my system and only recently stopped appearing in My Computer. Also, my drive is still visible and accessible on Windows XP but is not visible on my Windows 7.

I'd be grateful for any useful advice how to restore the functionlity of this drive on Windows 7.

Please let me know if you require any additional information to help resolve this issue.

Thank you!

A:Unable to initialize external HDD in Disk Management due to I/O error

Hello, tommythecat.
Is the external drive used much? Is it aging? Damaged (from moisture, shock [dropping] or misuse)?
If you can, back-up all the data to another HDD.
Connect the problematic HDD to the troublesome PC.
Open an administrative command prompt > type diskpart > type list disk.
Is the drive listed?

Cheers - Happy Holidays.

i had an old notebook with an overheating problem that I thought I had fixed, so I transferred all my music and picture files to it. then the problem recurred and the computer won't reboot. So I pulled the hard drive and put it in an enclosure I've used before, and am working through trying to get it recognized by my new notebook as an external hard drive.

Device Manager recognizes the drive and indicates that it is working properly, and it appears in Disk Management as well. However, in Disk Management, it shows as Disk 2; Unknown; Not Initialized. When I attempt to initialize it, I get the error "The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error."

I've tried to initialize it as MBR and GPT, with no luck, and I've checked the device drivers to make sure they're up to date (they are).

What else can I try? I will try anything, but if it's hopeless, I need to know that too. I just don't want to give up if there's a chance!

Thanks.

Mornin' Folks,
Got a curiosity here, and was wondering if my assumptions are correct.
Situation:  2 hd's  1=300+gbs; 2=500+gbs.  Coulda' swore that I loaded 1 as 0, installed win 7 on it(from boot, partitioned it there, as well as partioning 2 more volumes on same), partioned 2(disk 1) with 3 equal partions.  When building
sys plugged sata cords into appropriate slots.
Loaded win 7 on disk 0.  Left other partitions alone to do later from OS gui, did NOT load anything on disk 1 (the 500) but did partition it from the boot, at the boot disk option.   Wiped all clean, reformatted all internals...etc., etc..
I reconfig the BIOS, Win 7 boots...ouila!
Config the unallocated spaces (remember I partitioned them with the win 7 disk at initial) with Disk Manager GUI.  Put a swap file on 1st volume disk 1.

Disk 0 configs its own reserved where I had installed the OS...I know this.  Put a 400 mb. sys managed pagefile on disk 0.  Got rid of hiberfil.sys.  Swap file for ENTIRE 'puter on disk 1, partition/volume 1...first part./vol.
EVERYTHING = hunky dorey.....yee haw!
Now, on at least a weekly basis disk 0 and disk 1 switch places as seen in Disk Manager (right click 'puter...Manage...Storage...Disk Management) ALONG WITH: All the volumes, files, AND the OS.  So sometimes the 300 has the OS, volumes, files, etc.
and sometimes the 500 has the OS, volumes, files, etc. ... Read more

So Folks....anyone have any ideas on my Disks switchin' around on me?

About the only thing I can think of, if you're not switching physical connections is that something is happening in BIOS. - either you're flipping the boot order there, and Windows is interpreting it differently, or something is getting stuck, and the
boot order is changing as a consequence.

I am attempting to restore Windows XP Media Center Edition on a Compaq Presario SR1750NX Desktop PC using the System Restore option activated by pressing F10. Upon pressing F10, the system appears to load the PC Restore files but when it tries to execute them, it generates the following error:

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of
0xc0000034 (0x00000000 0x00000000).
The system has been shut down.

Notes:

No CD's are available as the machine shipped with the System Restore feature on a protected partition.
I would prefer a "restore" solution, as opposed to other reinstall options, in order to maintain use of additional software (such as Windows Office) that came preinstalled on the machine.

Questions:

Any suggestions on how I might clear the issue generating the error message so I can proceed with the system restore?
Any suggestions on how I might otherwise approach the problem?

Thanks in advance as any and all assistance is much appreciated.

A:Compaq Presario generates Fatal System Error when attempting PC Restore

If you decide you need the 2-CD system recovery disc kit for that Compaq Presario SR1750NX (EL445AA) desktop, you can purchase it from Computer Surgeons HP Recovery Center for $27.00 plus shipping.

That desktop was manufactured in November 2005, so HP will no longer have it available for purchase.

The kit will allow it to be reverted back to its original factory condition - complete with all the software and "bloatware" that came in it.

If the hard drive dies and needs to be replaced, the kit is going to be needed anyway to get that desktop going again.

A:My data drive not in Disk Management, listed as an Invalid Dynamic disk in DISKPART?

If you are OK with data loss on disk 0 you can do the following,

diskpart> sel dis 0
diskpart> clean
diskpart> conv dyn

This would reactivate your disk.
Invalid occurs due to many reasons like on spanned volume,
suppose few sectors have gone bad. So you are going to lose that data and as such disk becomes invalid.

I've had my Acer Aspire 5310 laptop for a few months now with Windows Vista. I have an 80GB hard drive, partitioned into two drives as default.

Until now I've never noticed that the numbers didn't add up. I know when you buy and 80GB hard drive, it should actually show up as less due to bits and bytes and what not (80GB=74GB roughly) but I found something fishy in Disk Management. There is a drive showing up with no letter assigned to it which is nearly 10GB in size and after doing the math it accounts for the 10GB i lack after adding my two 32GB hard drives together.

So I have 2 x 32GB drives plus this weird drive which is 10.

I have attached the screenshot of disk management.

If anyone knows what is going on here I would very much appreciate it!

A:Problem with Vista Disk Management/Being robbed of hard disk space!

has this just recently appeared? This is a longshot, but if you have Kaspersky lap installed then that could be the problem. It autologs roughly 10 gigs of data without your permission, it is easy to get rid of, but annoying none the less.
However this doesn't seem to likely as what seems to have happened here is that you have accidently split one of your hard drives into two. Either that or a program like deamon tools has created a virtual drive. Do you use either deamon tools or alcohol 120?

I have a problem regarding my external Toshiba hard disk 500 GB where it can?t be detected in my computer and also disk management. I have formatted the external HD since I was asked to format it when an error popped up.
So I formatted it and after the formatting completed, I tried to connect the hard disk to my Windows Win 7 laptop. When I connect it to the laptop, it can?t be detected and yet the hard disk is blinking with its white light like it used to when it is connected to the laptop. I tried the disk management thingy, but it can?t detect my hard disk. I tried in other laptops but the result is same
What can I do to make it better? Please help me.

A:External hard disk not detected in My Computer and in Disk Management

First off, how old is your Toshiba external HDD? Also, when it starts to spin up, do you hear any sort of clicking or whining noise?

If you hear any noises that sound off, it's possible your external HDD is failing.

When you formatted it, what file system did you use to do so? Because sometimes even if Windows can't detect it, I have had success with booting with a Ubuntu Live CD, and then connecting the external HDD in order to format it that way. It all has to do with how Windows formats HDD's and how Ubuntu and other Linux systems do.

If you can I recommend downloading Ubuntu onto a CD and boot to it on one of your computers, in the Live CD mode, so it doesn't install anything. Once its loaded, plug in the Toshiba and try to format it as NTFS (this is important, because Ubuntu doesn't use it as a native file system, so you need to make sure that NTFS is selected on the format window, not EXT4 or the other types of Linux OS File Systems)

If it doesn't work, post back here, and I will see if I can help you some more. Also feel free to PM me if you have any other issues.

Regards,
-Alex

Hi

Question before I proceed please :

Have 2 hard drives (SSDs).

Drive 2 : OS Win 8.1 for tweaked hobby work; Audio recording etc

Whilst I wish to not physically disconnect the drives on each boot. I would like to have the alternative drive hidden and not impacted when the other drive is running for the OS.

Boot up from Drive 1 this currently shows as Drive C: and the secondary drive with the OS installed as D:
Boot up from Drive 2 this currently shows as Drive C: and the secondary drive with the OS installed as D:

End aim

Boot up from Drive 1 this currently shows as Drive C: and the secondary drive with the OS installed not running or showing on the system and vice versa.

Is the online offline function what I need to use or is this going to put the drive offline for the system as a whole.

Thanks for your help.

A:Disk Management could not start Virtual Disk Service (VDS)

You might try going to the Services panel (services.msc) and looking at the properties for the Virtual Disk service. Open the Dependencies tab and check that those three services are also running or can be started.

Have you done anything with the utility lately like mount a .vhd or .xvhd file? Is there anything which might be corrupted and causes problems for the Utility with it tries to scan the drives?

Can something be done or is it a hardware failure.

A:External Hard disk showing as RAW in disk management

Sounds like the drive is failing or the circuitry in the enclosure is faulty.

I would first remove the drive from the enclosure and hook it up as a slave to a desktop PC. See if you can then access it. If you can, then post back for further instructions with the version of your OS.

Hi, I was going to try dual booting Windows 8 on my laptop following a guide I found, and it said to go onto disk manager and shrink a volume to create another volume. The guide after the shrink only had two disks, and I had 5 disks (A recovery disk, HP tools and a blank one, along with my C disk, and the newly made one, named Windows 8 which I have now gotten rid of), after creating the other volume, it said about converting to a dynamic disk, I thought this was normal and clicked okay. After this I researched into dynamic and basic disks and found that only basic disks can contain a volume which is "active", where the BIOS boots Windows from, but because I converted the basic disk to a dynamic, the volume labelled active now doesn't display that it is active. (The guide's disk still said basic)
So now I am worried that my laptop won't boot, so I keep putting it into sleep mode (open and closing it) because this doesn't require BIOS. Please tell me whether it is safe to turn off my computer and turn it back on, I can't afford it not to work.

Here is a picture of my current and only disk on my laptop:

One more thing, I'm sure that the one which said active before was the one with no name on the left.

Thanks for reading :-)

A:Disk management converted only disk to dynamic, will it boot?

From what I've read, the only major difference with dynamic disc's is that it's more flexible, in that it allows you more options in manipulating the disc itself. See link. You are fine with either setup.

I didn't take to Ubuntu and decided to stick with Vista, so I deleted it and attempted to delete the temporary partition on my hardrive with no luck.

I have sat on this problem for years, occasionally trying to solve it to no avail. Now my main C drive is nearly full, only 5.59 GB of free space and I need to access this unused partition space and the 9.31 GB of potential it contains. But still I cannot delete this partition, it should be sooo easy, but my system is not operating as text book.

I am in Disk Management, in Computer Management folder.

It is a basic type partition, simple layout that says Healthy(EISA Configuration). But when I right click the mouse over the partition I want to delete, the only icon that pops up says 'Help', it doesn't give me the option to 'delete, shrink or expand volume'

Now I have tried lots of suggestions from the help section, but can't seem to solve why my computer will not allow me to access the necessary options icon to delete this partition.

Can anyone out there help, or has anyone experienced similar challenges?

I just cloned my OS HD to a new Crucial M4 128Gb & it is working just fine.

I later noticed a failed disk - that is about the same size as the new M4. Screenshot is attached.

Do I dare delete this failed phantom disk? Please - no guesses!

A:Disk Management shows failed disk?

OK - I went ahead & deleted it. No ill effects.

After adding two new SATA hard drives in my computer, I noticed that Disk Management lists SATA Drive C (which contains Win 7) as Disk 2. The other two drives are listed as Disk 0 and Disk 1.

Since I connected SATA Drive C in SATA port 1, I was expecting to see it listed as Disk 0. SATA drives D and E are connected to SATA port 2 and 3 but are listed before the one connected in SATA port 1. Weird!

And since the computer seems to work fine, I'm wondering if the disk numbers listed in Disk Management matter at all? Please let me know if this is normal or if I should change something.

Thanks!

A:Disk numbers in Disk Management matters?

I had the same issue, physically by connecting sata cables disk 1 for XP, disk 2 for Data and disk 3 for Win 7. When initially booting into XP system and going to computer/properties/manage/disk mgr, it showed XP on 0, data on 1 and Win7 on 2. Booting into Win7 and doing the same, the disks were listed as the same, i.e. XP = Win7 = actual physical cable layout. However, on a number of occassions booting into Win7, the drives can be in any order. Machine works and boots OK, guess they are using virtual drives. BTW W7 seems a million times faster than XP Mike

Hello, thanks for reading and any help you may be able to offer.

I have a Western Digital external hard drive. Model WD5000C032 500GB. It's an older device that was working just fine on my Mac (I don't know what OS it was running and do not have access to it any longer). I have brought this HD with me and am now trying to use it on my Windows 8.1 lap top. When I plug it in, the device is not assigned a letter. I can search for it in disk management, but it is uninitialized. I have right clicked on the drive to initialize, and receive an error message "the specific disk is not convertible because the size is less than the minimum size required for GPT disks." I searched online and found a thread on sevenforums that suggested downloading and using Partition Wizard. I downloaded the program and opened the wizard, but it does not see my hard drive. The screen shot will display as far as I've gotten.

I am completely at a loss. I am NOT computer savvy and all of this is a little over my head. I'm hoping someone will be able to help.

A:Unable to initialize disk in Disk Management

I have tried basic troubleshooting (rebooting computer, unplugging device from wall outlet, unplugging device from USB, switching USB ports). At first I thought it was a problem with the driver, but the properties states that the driver is compatible and up to date. I do not want to lose any data that is on the drive if possible (lots of photos, music, etc.). Thanks again.

I'm trying to get my drives ready to move to a new computer i want to build. I have a 4.45 TB dynamic span spread over 5 drives. From what I've read what I should do first is go into Disk Management and right click one of the disks and click "Remove Disk." I've tried, but everything except "Offline" "Properties" and "Help" is greyed out. Can't remove the drive. What should I do?

A:Disk management, remove disk greyed out.

Moving or deleting the spanned volumes in Disk Management will loose all data.

I ran Computer Management>Disk Management to see the data on all my disk drives. Although all the drives are shown, when looking down the left column I noticed that the number Disk 7 was missing. In other words:
o
o
o
Disk 5 - Removable (Flash Drive)
Disk 6 - Basic (External Drive)
Disk 8 - Basic (External Drive)
o
o
o

So Disk 7 was missing in the listing. I've never experienced that before and was wondering what it meant and whether it indicated a problem.

Any suggestion/advice would be appreciated. Thanks in advance........

i just go a 3tb drive and it shows the right size in my startup screens and everything but when i get in windows to partition it is only 746GB i have tried switching it from MBR over to GPT and from basic to dynamic but still no change any 1 have any ideas

A:i cant get disk management show right disk space

It needs to by GPT to see all 3 TB.

How did you do this switching back and forth from MBR to GPT??

Stay away from dynamic disks at all costs. Just say no if they are ever offered.

What is this disk's purpose? Data only? OS? Data and OS?

Do you want just a single partition on it?

What motherboard make, model, and BIOS do you have?

Hi chinu89,

As far as the icons go, the following tutorial covers the procedure to restore both the icons you mentioned: Desktop Icons.

Do your drives show up in Windows Explorer?

Please attach a screenshot of Disk Management so we can see what it looks like as things currently exist. It will be easier than asking a dozen questions about what is or isn't there. We can then proceed from there.

Also, please update and run a full AV scan with your security software. Also, download, install, update, and run a full scan with Malwarebytes: http://www.malwarebytes.org/. This type of problem can be caused by malware - so let's rule that out.

I hope this helps.

Thanks and good luck!

Internet Explorer 11 fails to install on Microsoft Server 2008 R2 & repeatedly generates error code 9C47 or 9C49

Greetings,

I was asked to update our Windows 2008 R2 server from IE 10 to IE11, and it will not install properly.  I have looked up several solutions to this issue, so far nothing has worked.
I disabled McAfee HBSS in safe mode, restarted the PC and tried to run Windows Update managed by a WSUS server.  The update gets approved and pushed out to the 2008 R2 server.  It downloads IE11, tries to install, then fails/errors-out at the last
second. I have tried this a few times, rebooted and either get error code 9C47 or 9C49.

Some of the suggested fixes I have tried:

I turned of internet connectivity and the anti-virus
I tried the Windows Update repair tool
I tried the Windows System Readiness tool
I tried to scan the system files for errors with sfc /scannow
I tried installing the other updates first, restarting and it still fails
I removed the server listing from the WSUS server, and re-added it and it will not update
I tried the stand-alone IE11 installer, and it fails at the very last step and then gives me an error with a link to troubleshoot IE installations
I have uninstalled IE10, and now am stuck with Internet Explorer 9
RT returns no errors
SFC returns no errors

None of the recommendations have worked so far.
If there is anyone who has any other suggestions, it would be ... Read more

Hello. My OS is Win XP Home (OEM version). My problem is that whenever i try to run Administrative Tools --> Computer Management --> Disk Management,a small window will pop-up reading, "The RPC server is unavailable".And in the Computer Management window, the status bar would indicate,"Unable to connect to Logical Disk Manager service".But when i run services.msc, both Logical Disk Manager and Logical Disk Manager Administrative Serviceare on automatic and have been started.Disk Defragmenter also does not seem to be functioning, for i have countlessly clicked on the Analyze and Defragment buttons without anything happening.I'm very puzzled as to why i can't run these system tools. I've heard about the benefits of partitioning and defragmenting the hard drive so i would really liketo have a go at it.Help please!

A:Disk Defragmenter And Disk Management Won't Run

Couple of thoughtsFirst you need to be logged on as an administrator to do some of these things. If your individual account is not administrator, then in xp home you need to boot up in safe mode.To do this hit f8 during boot up and you should have an option of logging on as administrator. Default password is no password.Try defragging then. Also here is information on partitioning in windows xp http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=309000
