comp isn't responding after i turn it on

Q: comp isn't responding after i turn it on

I think my poor computer has contracted some spyware or viruses or some crap and uh, now after the first 8 seconds after I turn it on, it just freezes up, I probobly could fix this if I could get to the system restore, but it freezes up before I can get to it.

Preferred Solution: comp isn't responding after i turn it on

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,

With my laptop, It seems to crash and stops responding after a while. I think my computer has a small bug but I cant run any scans because the laptop crash's. Even if its left on then after some time the laptop will slow downs its response time with opening something as small as a txt file and the mouse will stop responding and then just move slow.

Programs I have:
Windows Vista (Basic)
Kaspersky Anti Virus,
Spybot Search & Destory,
Spysweeper,
Ad-Aware

When i run them they just stop responding as does the laptop. Is it a security issue or is there something I can do?
The memory usage seems to be a bit high as this image shows.

I do have 1.5GB RAM

Help Please?

We started noticing trouble in our internet browser Google Chrome. Gmail would not respond at all and YouTube would drag loading videos. We have two computers in our home and the other computer works just fine with gmail and youtubes videos so we believe our internet connection is stable. I uninstalled Chrome and re-installed it but got same results. Also, internet explorer was having the same issues. Now, the entire computer system is running slow as if there is computer issues not browser issues.

Ran MS Security Essentials scans but no problems. Malware Bytes full version runs on our computer and no detected problems. Ran CCleanup but no detected problems but did remove alot of junk.

We are at a loss on how to proceed. We have had very good success in the past using Tech Guy support so we thought we would reach out for help.

Thanks!!

It will show as "shutting down" (something like that)nd will just stay there forever.

Hi What OS are you running?

Have you tried any of the following:

On Windows XP try running windows defender in case of spyware etc, or try one of the others searchanddestroy etc.

Check you have all latest updates.

Make sure you have no programs running when you shut down. try doing control + alt +delete viewing task manager and then seeing if you have any hi mem usuage programs running.

Has everything closed properly before you shut down?

Has this problem arisen recently and may you have installed something to cause it.

My computer is all AOpen parts running on Windows ME. It was acting funny one day and the next it wouldn't start up. When I press the power button the processor fan starts to run for a few seconds, then the CPU speaker beeps a few times and the whole thing just shuts back off. I'm thinking its the power supply, I've had that problem before on a different comp but it was different symptoms. I have a few spare power supplies from my comp graveyard I dont know if they're interchangable or how to tell if they are. Help?

First things first, i'd like to say hi! First time posting here.
Now on to my problem. a guy at work asked me to take a look at his comp for him. I got it home and it won't power up. I unplugged everything but the mobo and tried to turn it on. No dice. The light on the mobo is on, which i assume would mean it is getting power. I switched out the power supply. Still nothing. Am i correct in assuming that eather the MOBO or the CPU has gone bad?
PS. if this is in the wrong forums please move. i wasn't sure which forum to post it in.

Hmm so the computer wont turn on, it's not frequently used either and i know it had a few probs in the past... someone plz help me! Yes i did try to switch power supply from 115v to 250v and nothing happened so i turned it back. And when i plugged it in, i can hear like a.... idk high pitch noise coming from the tower but it wont turn on.

A:Comp won't turn on. And im not technical

It might help if you listed your PC specifications. You shouldn't change that switch on the back. You adjust that according to the wall socket current. In the USA the default would be 115V. Changing it to 250V could blow the power supply. If nothing happened when you did that, your power supply might be dead already. The other thing is when the power supply blows, it sometimes takes out other components. That didn't necessarily happen but I bring it up only as a possibility.

If you're lucky it's just the power supply. Worst case scenario? Everything in it is fried.
I'd try a different power supply first, then take it from there.

A:HELP MY COMP. Wont turn on

Hi Igli and welcome to the Techspot Forum

First its a Hard Drive not a hard driver, from your post I can only guess that the 71GB Hard Drive has failed, either mechanically or electronically.

Suggestions, go to the maufacturers website and download the test tool for the drive in question and test it, sorry to say if the test tool finds it faulty then all your data is gone.

Hi, a few weeks ago I came home a few hours after having used my computer in the morning to find it off. It would not turn on. I unplugged everything and took off the side panel and found the PSU still warm. I read around on similar postings on this forum and decided it was my PSU. I bought a new one. Still didn't turn on. However, the f-lock led on my keyboard was lit up when the switch on the PSU was flipped on. So I e-mailed my motherboard company, Epox. I recieved some directions that would get rid of electricity still in the board such as holding the power button down for 10 seconds, setting the cmos to 2-3 for a few seconds and putting it back onto 1-2. One of the directions was to remove the round cmos battery, which i did not do because I was unable to reach it enough to remove it. I also took it completely apart and replugged everything in. No such luck. So, I bought another mobo, one just like it but the chipset was nforce3 250 instead of nforce3 ultra. Supported the same hardware, though. Still will not work. So, now i'm wondering if it's the power button on my case. I am probably going to plug my friend's case's power button into my mobo and see if it turns on.
>>>>To summarize-
1)Computer mysteriously turns off.
2)Buy new PSU.
3)Fiddle around with old mobo, but end up buying new one.
4) Still will not turn on. And when I say won't turn on, i mean nothing turns on, moves, makes noise, or lights up.

An easy way to troubleshoot the case power switch is to completely disconnect it from your motherboard. Then take a regular screwdriver, and just quickly touch (short) the two pins that the case's power switch usually connect to.

Hopefully your system will fire up, and you'll know you have a dead power switch!

Hi there! I've a problem with my computer. After I'd updated the BIOS (my mobo: Gigabyte GA-P35-S3) the machine stopped turning off. I mean, the fans still worked, the monitor stopped responding, the led on chassis was on. But someone helped me on IRC - told me what to change in the settings and it worked. Unfortunately after I'd updated the BIOS again I deleted the backup and it doesn't work. In Gigabyte they said to flash the BIOS to the new beta, and when it didn't help - to change the mobo in the shop. Can someone please help me?

any suggestions??

A:New comp wont turn on

Don't worry this happens all the time! Remember to power off before disconnecting anything. Do you get any beeps? 1 beep is good - more beeps is bad and can tell you what is going wrong.
First take out the motherboard and make sure that there not too many stand-offs; any extras can short out the board.
If this is OK, check you have all the front panel connections on the right pins - an LED connection on the reset button for example will stop it booting.
If this still does not sort it, disconnect everything and take out all the cards except the front panel and power supply cables. Does it boot? Reconnect one thing at a time and that will tell you what is causing the problem.
Get back to us!

whenever i turn off my computer, it always say that. how can i make it not appear when i shut down my computer? thanks

A:It is now safe to turn of your comp.

1) Check that your system is ACPI compliant
- in "Device manger" expand the "computer" icon and check if states Advanced Power management

2) Test in safe mode - If the problem is not present in safe mode, then mostlikely the issue is releated to a 3rd party application hanging the system during the shut down process.

If the problem is still present in safe mode, then you may need to toggle some settings in the BIOS (power management etc..)
or you may need to update the system BIOS

Well basically a few days ago my computer screen would go black in the middle of playing a game and it would force me to restart my computer because I couldn't do anything. I thought it was a bug with titan quest since it hadn't happened in half life 2 or WoW. Sadly this morning after 5 minutes of playing WoW the same thing happened so I restarted and tried half life 2. The game almost immediately did the same thing and when I tried to restart my computer won't even turn on properly. It sounds like it is running fine but I get no picture and the 3 lock lights dont come on when I try.

My luck with my computer has been nothing but bad in the past year. I am now on my third hard drive, 3rd Graphics card, 2nd motherboard, and almost needed a new sound card. If anyone is able to help me, please do because all of this money I have pretty much put down the drain has led me to think I should just forget about fixing it and sell the parts and spend my money on something else.

If i want to get back in normal mode i have to end the explorer.exe from task manager.

There is no problem at the startup though. The turn off window appears if i click it after the startup and runs fine for sometime.
After using the pc for sometime turn off doesnt respond.

This morning my computer auto-shutoff (before I woke up). When I went to turn it on, the box light and fans blinked on for less than a second and then nothing. I opened it up, it's clean (dusted it with air about two weeks ago), all lines look and feel to be securely in place, and the motherboard light is on, which I think rules out the power supply. So what is wrong with my system?

System Specs:

Power Supply: 470W Thermaltake (Silent Power Edition)
Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4GHz (1066MHz Front Side Bus) (4MB Cache) (Conroe)
MotherBoard: Asus P5N-SLI (Chipset: nForce 570 Intel) (SLI Compatible) (Conroe)
Memory: 2GB DDR2 Super Talent at 800MHz (High Performance)
Hard Drive: 80GB Western Digital (8MB Cache) (7200 RPM) (SATA)
Video Card: nVidia GeForce 7600GT 256MB (By: XFX) (PCI-Express)
Cooling: Air Cooling (Certified Digital Storm Heat-sink and Fan) (Stage 1 Cooling)
OS: Windows XP ME 2005 SP2

I do plan on calling Digital Storm Tech Support this morning, but since they're a west coast company I have to impatiently wait for them to open at 9am. Depending on the problem, they may not be able to fix it either, so I come to you guys.

Thank you, in advance, for any light you can give to this problem.

I'm running a Prescott P4 3.2 gHz, 1.5 gigs of ram, nVidia 5500 card, on an ASRock Motherboard model p4v88, running WinXp sp2 and every single update...

Last night I shut down the system before I left with no problems. I haven't had *any* problems with it, really, as long as I've owned it. I take great care of it and it's been devoid of viruses or disk error or anything since I've had it (only 5 months). Also no BIOS updates in a long time, and no windows updates in a few weeks.

This morning I pushed power and the fans whirred up for maybe a half a second before the system turned off. I pushed power again and the same thing happened. I unplugged everything from the back but the power, same. I opened it up (unplugged) and pulled out the ram - same. Uplugged the harddrives - same. Cdroms/pci cards/video card/ etc., until the only thing that was plugged in was the motherboard. I'm still having the same problem. The little green LED on the front of the case remains lit even tho the sys isn't on. I think the PSU is okay... what the hell could the problem be? The computer was plugged into a surge protector so I don't think it got a shock. I haven't like spilled water on it or anthing.. ahh...

if your just now setting it up it could the motherboard shorting out. like if one of the mounting screws for the motherboard is touching something on the board it could cause it to short out. try and see if you can remove the board from the case so that its not touching anything metal and see if it will boot up.

And i havent done anything to my computer recently just have gone online. So All i did was shut my computer down last night, and it WOULDNT TURN ON this morning.
- i already tried unplugging and plugging back in, and changed the the power bar. everything else on the bar works (my light, the monitor, the dsl box, and the speakers) except the computer base.

Well my computer doesn't turn on anymore. It was working fine and then the power cord of the surge got unplugged from the outlet. Needless to say the comp wont turn on anymore. I was wondering if its the psu or the mobo that has messed up. When I plug in the comp the steady power light turns on, on the mobo which i assume it means it receiving some type of power. But when I press the power button the led lights of comp flash on and then turn back off. So does anybody know if its the psu or the mobo that is damaged?

A:Comp Wont Turn ON is it the PSU or the Mobo

Probably Power Supply (hard to say really)

Just for a quick option:

Remove the power cord
Hold the On button in for 30 secs (releasing all internal voltage)
Put the power cord back in (securely)
Turn on (I hope)

can someone/malcious program fizzle, turn off, or temporarily dissolve your firewall so that they can get in?

i am trying to figure out more about security and what malicious stuff can do to your computer.

does anyone know the answer to this question?

sincerely,
thank you

A:can your firewall be temporarily turn off so that someone can get into your comp

Rather than fizzle the firewall malicious hackers would be far better off opening a random port for their communications, which would remain open. As to a malicious program doing this it would be a far more complicated scenario. i know webcrawlers constantly hit my work server firewall looking for open ports, but they would be unable to modify these settings from the inside if they did get in. (despite all the chaos they would cause). As to software firewalls on workstations being temporarily compromised on workstations... someone else can jump in here

Hi,

Just in the past 48 hours my computer has developed a mind of its own. It freezes at every turn, system not responding errors with just about everything i do. I'm running a Win 7 Ult., 32-bit, 2 GB Sony Vaio laptop that worked flawlessly a few months ago. I did just pull it out of its case for the first time in a while.

I've tried to repair windows, repair registry, i even ran registry mechanic. I went for a system restore but no restore points are present (which seems odd, as i don't remember turning it off).

I'm checking the event logs and i don't see any "red x", so not sure how to tell what is causing the problem. My only solution so far has been to restart the computer, but then it just hangs again on me shortly thereafter.

I need some help here.

Thanks,
Ryan.

Download this and run it http://download.cnet.com/Malwarebytes-Anti-Malware/3000-8022_4-10804572.html then run whatever antivirus application you have. If you dont have one this is good http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

My computer froze, and I turned it off. I then turned the computer back on, and the Windows XP logo that comes on at the beginning will not appear. I can keep the computer on for an hour, and all I get is a blank black screen with a blinking white cursor at the top lefthand corner of the screen. Is there any way to fix this?

Ok I have no idea what is going on with this computer and I am very very tired of trying to figure it out.

I've the following programs and have used them often: CCleaner, IOBIT (Advanced Care, Smart Defrag, etc), Microsoft Security Essentials, UnLocker, SuperAntiSpyware

I have the following browsers IE, Firefox, Chrome, Opera

When using a browser (pick one) it....."stalls" I guess is what you call it, it just won't go to a page, always looks like it's loading, etc. I close it and when I try to reopen it says that the browser is still running and can't open another. When browsing I also can not play games like on I-Am-Bored.com, I can't get drop down menus to work, etc. After this, I also can not get the computer to shut down or restart (have to press the power button) and occassionally it gives me a pop up error about NsAppShell:Event something.

Please help me solve this problem once and for all.

I have tried uninstalling browsers and reinstalling.

Thank you in advance!

^Sorry about that post being so sloppy, I posted this about 3 minutes before my workplace closed and my boss was in a hurry to get everyone out and lock the doors. This problem is on my computer at work.

A:Browsers Stalling, Comp Won't Restart/Turn Off, etc.

Can you post the full error that it's giving you?

I found that Firefox's add-ons can be causing the issues you're experiencing, but I'm not sure if that's the case with your PC...

Try booting into "Safe Mode With Networking" to see if the problem persists.

So every time I log onto my computer my internet opens up automatically, first thing, and it always shows me this page called hits4pay.com or something like that...
its really annoying...like this is the first thing that happens when i turn on my computer..I dont even go on the internet ..this just pops up and I dont know why..
Does anyone know how I can get rid of it??
Ive never even heard of this site..its so weird..I have no idea why this happens..

Is there anything I can do to get rid of this..? I didn't even do anything...I just want to get rid of this..and I just finished scanning my comp. with an anti-virus program and an adware program and a registry mechanic program and it didn't find anything..
and I still get this pop up..

How can I get rid of it..?
Can someone help me out.?

-Thanks=)

A:I keep getting this weird pop-up every time I turn on my comp. and after it loads..

Hmm well its definitly a virus/addware. What anti virus program are you useing? PCTools I believe is good protection but this thing could be going pretty deep. Look up Spyware Doctor.

Also,
Take a look at you startup config. There should be something there telling it to do so. Im not at my home computer and my work comp doesnt allow me to edit setting but I BELIEVE this can be done by clicking START>RUN> MSConfig. There should be a startup tab there.

A:how do i change what programs load when i turn my comp on?

You can change what loads on startup in the System Configuration Utility. Go to Start > Run, and type in "msconfig" without the quotes. Click on the "Startup" tab, and this provides a list of programs that run on startup.

Be careful with this tool though. It would be best to post what programs are on this list, and we can provide info on what is OK to disable.

I just replaced my old board, processor, and memory in my backup comp with an MSI K8T Neo-V board, AMD Athlon 3800, and 1gb memory. I got it all set up, and powered it on, but the fans kicked for a sec, and the power LED flashed on, but went off almost instantly. I re-seated everything, and unplugged all unnecessary devices (HDD's, etc), and it still did the same thing. I'm thinking it might be power supply, but it worked immediately before the upgrade. Any thoughts?

Hi all. Hope one of yahs can help me out.

2 wenesdays ago I constructed my first comp, and to my amazement I managed to put it together flawlessly.

I'm a heavy gamer. Lots of FPS, and WoW. I play around 3-10 hours a, day depending on the day.

This morning I wake up and boot up my comp. Everything is fine. I log into World of Warcraft and play for around 5 minutes before suddenly my comp just shuts down. Almost like as if someone pushed the power button.

I'm thinking "WTF?", so I check my monitor and speakers and sure enough they are powered on, and responding. I tried to turn the comp back and on and nothing happened. I checked inside the tower and the motherboard LED light is on. The orange enet light is also on.

At the moment I don't have the hardware to test swap (I will on monday). I was hoping that some of you may have overcome this problem before. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Here are my comp parts in case they may help.

MB Asus P5ND2-SLI NF4SLI 775
VGA Asus N EN6800GT/2DT/256MB R
CPU INTEL P4 630 800M LGA775 2M R

A:My new comp shut down while gaming, won't turn back on!

Hello and welcome to Techspot.

Check all cables/connections etc.

Try a different psu. If that doesn`t help, then it`s probably the mobo or cpu that`s died.

Hey, this is my first build so I've been extra careful to make sure I've done everthing correct however when I went to turn the PSU on, the green LED on my motherboard that recognises the SATA drivers (my optical 1TB Western Digital and a Sony DVD writer)and lights up, yet when I push in the ON button on the outercase NOTHING happens. No fans turn on, nothing.

Everthing I've bought is new and reccommended so Im assuming it's the way I've wired it up, which is very possible because when it came to the PSU wiring I wasn't too confident what I was doing what right.

My motherboard is ASUS M4A89GTD PRO USB3
CPU is AMD Phenom II X4 940
RAM - 2 x 2GB of Corsair DDR3 Memory
The drivers mentioned above.
Cooler Master Sileo 500 case and PSU unit.

The power switch runs through an adapter chip so I took it out and plugged it straight into the motherboard but still nothing happened.

Now it could possibly be the PSU but it's brand new and in the manual it reccommends a 450 watt so I'm covered, plus Im using the built in graphics card, so no extra wattage is needed.

Like I said I wasn't very sure I was wiring everything up right to the PSU. All the wires had things like P4, P14, P6/etc is this significant to what you plug into it? I just clicked in one that fitted into the SATA drives, the PSU fan is a 4 pin but my mobo only has a 3 pin connecter but even so, this can't be the problem because NOTHING will power on.

Yes it can. If the motherboard senses the CPU fan isn't connected properly, it won't power up. I looked up the motherboard and I believe you have connected the CPU fan to the wrong connector. The CPU fan motherboard connector definitely has 4 pins and is labeled CPU fan on the motherboard. Look for the connector along the top edge of the motherboard.

I am running Windows XP, don't know what service pack.

When I started up my computer and then logged in, the screen flashed black, a message from the monitor appeared "auto adjust in progress" and then my screen was at a very low resolution. I tried changing it back but none of the resolutions seemed quite right (could just be me). So I decided to restart and see what happens. This time login screen is at the low resolution (I can't remember if I had left the screen at a low resolution when I restarted.). So I go back, try one ore time and the same thing happens as the first time, log in, screen flashes black, message shows for fraction of a second and the resolution goes low.

I can't remember what I did since the last time the computer was on before the problems started occurring. But, today I ran a scandisk, (because of a problem an HP printer I installed yesterday is causing), I installed a new program called "Combat arms" (a free to play online FPS I downloaded) and I uninstalled multiple applications as part of some cleanup I was doing.

Any advice on fixing my problem would be greatly appreciated!

Hi, I would firstly like to apologize for not being able to update my user CP or tell you what my CPU/Mobo is. I can't get my computer to turn on and can't access the info.

This happened while I was trying to reset everything on my computer (because there was a problem with my NIC). I unplugged everything and replugged them into their respective places, and now I can't seem to turn my computer on. Everything was working fine (except the NIC) prior to my resetting. Now the problem is when I turn on the power, there would be a small delay before it would turn on, and when it does turn on, the lights in front of the computer (for the on switch) flash, the flashing intervals are synchronized with the rate the CPU fan turns on and off. The case fan is running constantly however and it is blowing out cool air. I have done some searching on the forums, and I have heard that it was because I unplugged the 12-20 wire that connects the power button (in the front) to the CPU. I unplugged this wire and the fans still turn on and off, except the front LED's can't flash. If anyone can help me, that would be most appreciated.

A:Lights flash, fans turn on and off, comp remains off.

You gotta do some more diagnostics.
But before I'll start listing them, I have one question:
Before you've removed components from your computer did you un-plug it from AC outlet? Cause if you didn't you may've damaged motherboard or any other component for that matter. I know it sounds silly but I'm just making sure.
Anyway, do as follows:
Unplug the power. Open the case and re-sit you memory modules and if you have to re-sit your CPU chip. Re-sit all your add-on cards (sound, video etc.) Make sure you re-install the CPU heatsink properly. Make sure that all cards and modules are snug and properly sitted in the motherboard.
Note! Dont' ever operate your CPU without properly installed heatsink, ever!
Plug it back in and the try to boot. If it's still no go:
Unplug it. Pull all the cards out except for the video card. Disconnect all your drives: hard drives, cd/dvd-rom/rw drives, floppy drive(s) etc. Actually disconnect everything from you motherboard except for: CPU, 1 memory module and video card (and of course power supply - make sure the 12V+ cpu plug is in the motherboard!). Plug in and power on. See what happens. If it's still no go move the memory module to a different slot; power on; still no go - pull the video card out: plug-in power on; still no go:
- Your power supply, motherboard, memory module or CPU has gone bad - you gotta swap them out with differnt component to test if this fixes the problem; star... Read more
