T480 not charging via thunderbolt

Q: T480 not charging via thunderbolt

My t480 no longer charges via thunderbolt dock. Sometimes it wontw boot if anything is plugged into the thinderbolt port either (black screen after Lenovo uefi splash screen) When plugging my power adapter into the port, it will enter pluged in modern but report not charging. It will maintain charge. When plugging a docking station, attached perepherper function normally, but again, not charging. This behavior started recently. Additionally I noticed that in device manager the UCSI USB connector manager sometimes will error out with an error 43. But this is sporadic and may be unrelated. Device manger view appears to repeatedly refresh, but have not been able to discover the conflict. I refreshed the os (win10) and it worked correctly for a bit, but then started doing the same thing again. Is this an error induced by a recent Lenovo or Microsoft update? Hardware problem? Software?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

I have a user with two LT3053s (2560 x 1600) and his previous T440 + Ultra Dock (I believe) supported the full resolution at 60 Hz (again I believe).  I upgraded him to a T480 and our standard Type-c dock that we deploy limited the screens to 1920x1080 @ 60Hz.  After this and complaints from the user of headaches from the drop in resolution we purchased a TB3 Gen 2 Dock and even after plugging the dock in to the actual TB3 port on the laptop (not the top type-c port) we are having issues with not all of his devices working, namely the kb+m. Any ideas here?  Right now we are running it with the 135W power adapter that it came with, but there is also another power adapter available that did not come with the unit we purchased.

We recently moved from the Lenovo T470 to the T480. We have purchased two of the T480's, with both we have the same issue; The adapters we have used for the T470, won't work with the T480's. The ports do work with our usb-c displays.  Some background information, the monitors we are connecting too are both from Apple, Thunderbolt Display and the Cinema Display. We have no issue with the T470, with the same adapter. The adapter we are using is a Apple Thunderbolt 3 to thunderbolt 2. We have also tried other adapters from some aftermarket sellers.  What we have tried already:Several adapters, none work. Both portsWe have tried deactivating the security in the BIOS for the USB-C, just to make sure we tried everything, but also no succes. We have spoken to our Lenovo reseller for over an hour, but no succes or tips.. Checking the thunderbolt software, if it gets recognized or anything but no. If anyone could provide some insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks in advance!

I own a Thinkpad T480 (20L5: Intel UHD graphics, Core i5 8th gen) and since it supports Thunderbolt 3, I want to attach an external GPU and display for light gaming. I see that Lenovo itself has a "Lenovo Thunderbolt Graphics Dock" but does not offer that as compatible with the Thinkpad series. Nevertheless, as Thunderbolt 3 is a standard, I am wondering if the Graphics Dock works with the T480. Did anybody already try that?

I am using a T480 with the TB3 dock and 2 external monitors. My problem is my screens go black for a couple of seconds every x amount of time. I've updatad all drivers found under the Display and Video graphics section Drivers T480I remember when updating to Intel Thunderbolt Software for Windows 10 (64-bit) - ThinkPad T480, T480s, X1 Carbon Gen 6 - 1.41.565.0I received the following screen:(I did get 2 Thunderbolt SW apps in my start menu and uninstalled the one which was visible via add/remove programs) These updates did not resolve my monitor issue.I later on noticed there is a new TB3 Dock FWWhen I wanted to make the update I got the message the TB SW had to be above 17.4.77.400. (the version insalled and active was 1.41.565.0) I reinstalled TB SW 17.4.78.500 and performed the TB3 dock FW upgrade. Now I am in the situation I do not have a Thunderbolt SW application to allow/select TB devices to connect.V1.41.565.0 seems to be a new DCH driver. reverting back to the legacy driver 17.4.78.500 is not somethig I should have done.It seems the DCH driver came with it's own Thunderbolt SW application, which is no longer available. Is there a procedure to completly reinstall the DCH driver including the Thunderbold SW or revert back to the legacy driver with Thunderbold SW (which now states the application is not in use anymore) Thanks!

I have a new T480 and Lenovo Thunderbolt 3 dock. I find that often when I close--but in no way shut down--the computer for the night, when I restart in the morning, it completely restarts, so I lose open tabs, unsaved work, etc. I can understand enough of the system event log to determine that the computer always goes to sleep when I close it, then, per the power plan, hibernates three hours later--or at least tries to. The first sign of trouble in the logs comes at the time of hibernation. For example, at 2:37:25 this morning there is the routine Information event, "The system is entering sleep. Sleep Reason: Hibernate from Sleep - Fixed Timeout." This is followed immediately by the warning, "6105 - deauth after EAPOL key exchange sequence". Over the next 5 minutes come two more warnings and eight errors. Then nothing until I start the machine in the morning. One of the first events on restart is the information message, "The last shutdown's success status was false. The last boot's success status was true." It appears to me that this only happens if the computer is plugged into the Thunderbolt 3 dock overnight. To the dock are connected a (gigabit) ethernet cable, a displayport monitor, a mouse, a keyboard, and a pair of headphones. Here is a fuller dump of the error log at the last time it was hibernating, or trying to: Level Date and Time Source Event ID Task CategoryError 7/30/2018 2:41:33 AM Microsoft-Windows-DistributedCOM 10010 None The server {3EB... I have a Lenovo T480 Laptop that I use for work. I do testing in vehicles sometimes and need to charge my laptop when I'm in there. The problem is that when I plug my laptop into an outlet(AC 110V 400W MAX) in a truck my laptop will begin charging for a moment, and then stop, and then start, and then stop, and eventually my computer will crash and restart itself. I have tried using a 140W Power Converter(Schumacher XI14) plugged into cigarette lighter but still the issue persists. When I plug it into a normal outlet everything works fine. I have tried on 3 different vehicles so I know it isn't specific to one. Is there a special charger that I need to use in situations like this? Has anyone else ran into any similar issues? Any help would be appreicated. Thanks!

Hi jmyestre, and welcome to the Lenovo User Community!

One of these would do it:
https://www.lenovo.com/us/en/accessories-and-monitors/top-tech/65W-USB-C-DC-Travel-Adapter/p/40AK006...

It's not uncommon see problems with inverters and power supplies. You are stepping up from 12V DC to 110V AC then back down to 20V DC. This travel adapter goes direct from 12V DC to 20V DC.

Hope this helps!

Hi all, I'm a little confused at the moment as I just received a usb type c charging cable, thinking my dell XPS 15 9550 would charge my device samsung s6 faster. But in fact it charges my phone twice as slow as the USB 3.0 port does.
Now where I am confused, why is it the USB 3.0 charges at one level, and the thunderbolt port charges the device twice as slow. E.g when connected to USB 3.0 it shows charging time 1:42, but when connected to thunderbolt it shows up as 4:53.
Is the thunderbolt port not suppose to be able to deliver much higher charging to devices than the USB 3.0 port?

Hello, just bought Thunderbolt 3 dock for my HP ZBook G3 and everything works perfectly. But my concern is the Battery - is Thunderbolt always charging the Battery? Or is there some logic behind that it won't charge it until the charge is below X %? I don't see the Battery charge dropping at all, which means it is charging, right? But how does that affect the Battery life/performance? Thanks for any info. Regards

So I got a brand new Yoga 370 and just got me a ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock. I have connected it to my laptop through a Thunderbolt 3 (40 Gb/s) USB-C cable male-male 5A, which supports power supply up to 100 W. I have plugged in the dock itself with a Lenovo original cable of 90 W. I also plugged in a HDMI cable from the dock to my monitor. After plugging in, my computer automatically installed the Thunderbolt software, package version 17.3.74.400. It also says I have the Thunderbolt controller generation 15BF, firmware version 4.04, installed now. Monitor works fine. But my Yoga is not charging. I tried to restart the computer, unplug the dock, and I even installed the Lenovo Power Management software from the Lenovo website, which I assume is then the latest version. Any ideas of what could possibly be wrong here? It is a bit of a disappointment as I was hoping this would work perfectly fine right away. I spent some 50 dollars on the USB C cable and another 150 on the dock itself. Thanks

I've set up my Thunderbolt 3 dock. I notice in the status, it shows "94% available (plugged in, not charging)". It has been like this for the past two days. Does the battery have to reach a certain threshold, before charging? Or is this normal? My last dock, with the 8570W would always charge to 100%.

I'm using the thunderbolt port for a single connection to a Dell usb-c dock (power in, KVM out, speakers, network, etc.).  The 720 charges real slow and the battery status message (in Lenovo Settings app) states that the "AC adapter cannot provide enough power for normal operation of your computer".  The Dell usb-c docks are powered with a 180w power supply that provides 60w of power to the computer, which is more than the 45w power supply that comes with the 720.  I have tried 3 different Dell docks, including a Dell thunderbolt 3 dock with a 240w power supply. I have to believe this is an issue with the Thunderbolt 3 driver on the 720 or something BIOS related.  BTW, the 720 has Windows 10 pro loaded (updated from the home version loaded by default) and Bitlocker enabled.  Don't think these changes have anything to do with the issue. I purchased Lenovo's thinkpad usb-c dock (which states that it's universal) and hope it charges the 720.

Hi all, I do tech support at a university that uses various Lenovo notebooks across campus. I have noticed a trend among the users that have a Thinkpad Yoga 370 Notebook and are using a Thinkpad Thunderbolt 3 Dock, myself included. Occasionally (every few weeks or so), one of the affected systems will show "plugged in, not charging" tooltip when hovering over the battery tray icon. When this happens, the charge indicator light by the charging port and Thunderbolt port does not turn on, the battery continues to drain, and unplugging the Thunderbolt cable and either plugging it (or the regular power cable) back into the notebook has no effect. These systems all use Lenovo System Update to keep their drivers and BIOS up to date, and I have updated the firmware on the Thunderbolt 3 Docks manually. This issue was brought to my attention because it started happening to me and my laptop/dock after the first few weeks of having it, and this behavior continued to happen for months. I would constantly be plugging in and unplugging my laptop, as I do on-site support in several buildings, and my laptop goes everywhere with me. Hi,

I would greatly appreciate any assistance I can get regarding some problems Im having with my laptop. Long story short I purchased a TB16 dock, managed to update all the drivers and firmware but still cannot seem to get my laptop to charge via the dock.
Everything else works; three displays, ethernet, mouse/keyboard. Everything except charging. The battery bar says that its charging but my battery slowly drains. BIOS says a 45w adapter is connected so it seems to recognized that its plugged in. I know its not the dock since my Brother's 9550 charges just fine.

Hi,
I myself own an XPS 15 9550 and noticed that I was not getting the full Thunderbolt 3 speedover it's Thunderbolt 3 port. I expected speeds around 2700MB/s, because of the overhead withthe theoretical gross speed of 3870MB/s, but I only ever got 1400MB/s out of it.
I did some digging and found out that none of the XPS notebooks with Thunderbolt 3 are evenable to achieve the full TB3 speeds, because they are only connected with two PCI Express lanes (x2.3).You can read more about this on the following links:Dell Subreddit PostChipset Digging on Forum

Thunderbolt 3 and the promised speeds were the MAIN REASON I even bought this notebook.I feel very cheated here.

Because I didn't liked USB 3.0 ethernet chipsets and USB-based ethernet cannot bear some network-intensive tasks, I wanted to use PCIe-based Thunderbolt ethernet controller on my XPS 15 9550. As there is no Thunderbolt 3 "PCIe" ethernet adapter (except docks), I chose to buy Apple Thunderbolt 3 to 2 adapter and Thunderbolt 2-based ethernet adapter.
I plugged it into the XPS 15 9550 (tested with BIOS 1.1.19, 1.2.14, 1.2.16 and latest Thunderbolt firmware with NVM version 16), and the PCIe device did not pop up. Instead, only USB billboard device is appearing saying that "Alternate Mode configuration not attempted". Both Windows 10 and Ubuntu 16.10 failed to detect the device. I moved this configuration to MSI GS63 laptop, and it detected ethernet controller successfully (that laptop utilizing NVM firmware version 18).
It seems that other vendors are affected with lower NVM firmware version involving setup with Thunderbolt adapter: see the case of Lenovo too. Do you have planned Thunderbolt NVM firmware update for XPS 15 9550? Looks like XPS 13 9360 is using newer Thunderbolt NVM firmware version, though.

Installation completed and everything appeared to be fine.  I powered down the thinkpad and disconnected. Worked from the living room, then went back to the dock. Hi ! Over the past two weeks I've spent my time troubleshooting why my recently (used) bought X240 is not charging the internal battery. Short timeline: 1. Bought used X240 in good condition but with dead internal and external battery - working well when using power supply.2. Came home and tested that thing -> both batteries show "0% - not charging" (with Win10Pro installed) *suprise, surprise*3. Ordered both new internal and external battery.4. External battery came 1.5 weeks ago. Installed it and worked like a charm (Battery 2 (external): X%, charging).5. Internal battery came the day before yesterday. Installed it and did not work -> "Battery 1: 53% - plugged in, charging - Battery 2: 6% - plugged in, not charging)6. Waited the recommended 6-12 hours like it was written in the "manual" to get it fully charged.7. Next morning -> Batterystatus unchanged (see point 5) ... It's stuck at 53%. Though the status says it's charging, it doesn't.8. Simply tried out what's going to happen when I pull the cable of the power supply -> Notebook instant off *hmmm*9. As the external battery was obviously blocked from charging by the internal (as it was not charged), I've taken out the internal battery again and et voila, external battery is charging again.I've tried to remove both batteries and perform the "Magic Trick" (press the main power switch for 30 secs) and I've also pushed the "reset" switch on the backside near the battery. Sadly without any result ;-(... Read more

Hello and peace on you..
I have a DELL Inspiron N5110 from early 2011
I was using the laptop correctly..The laptop was plugged in and the battery was charging..Then i removed the charger let the laptop on battery until suddenly the laptop shuts down without even telling me that the battery is low or even leaving some "emergency" charge on it (usually 7% or 5% i don't know)..I plugged it in to charge it again and open my leptop and i found out that the battery is not taking charge anymore!
I tried to see if the propblem is with the connector and tried to remove and put in again the charger and it ddid not work
i tried also to remove the battery and put it in again, it did not help
Now it is stuck on 2% of charge from 5 days and it's plugged in!
The laptop says that the battery is charging, but actually it is not charging and the charge level is the same from days
I looked up some solutions online like uninstalling ACPI microsof from Device manager and reboot the laptop..It did not work
"Jauge de batterie" which is an integrated software related to DELL, says that the battery health is good and that my battery is working properly
The laptop works fine with only the charger plugged in and battery out
PS: the laptop heats usually but i think it did not affect the battery at all since it was working fine and the charge took me about at minimum 30 min on high performance to be emptyed before this happens.
Please, i'm seeking for help

A:Battery says: Charging, but it is not actually charging while plugged in and is stuck in 2% for 5 days !

First thing to check is wherther the sysetm recognizes the AC adapter - F2 at powerup to check that.
If it doesn't, try a new Dell OEM AC adapter - if that doesn't fix the issue, replace the DC jack board, and if that doesn't solve it, the mainboard.  Note:  you MUST use a Dell adapter - NOT a third party unit.
If the system DOES recognize the AC adapter, but won't charge the battery, chances are the battery is bad and will need to be replaced.
You cannot solve the issue without checking and, if necessary, replacing these parts.
