changing default settings

Q: changing default settings

I have office 2013 and use outlook for my email. When I delete a message it goes into my trash folder and not my deleted folder. Plus the trash folder keeps only a few days of deleted emai9ls. How can I change outlook to send deleted items to the deleted folder and also keep them until I want to delete them. My sent folder also just keeps a few days of sent item. I want to keep items in all my folders until I delete them. How can I do this? Thanks much....

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

OK, the poltergeist of computers has come back and has crawled back into my laptop once again....and things are getting really crazy. There's a number of small, irritating things going haywire in my laptop so I'm here once again knowing you guys are the ones to help me. I'll start with this one problem and move on to the others, later.

In the Control Panel under Mouse, I have selected a certain configuration for the Busy icon. The default icon is a blue round circle which I really dislike and I have picked the hourglass icon. I saved the change but about every 5th time I open my laptop the icon has changed back to default.

I realize this isn't an exactly earth-shaking problem, but hey, the software allows me to "decorate" my computer and I like doing it. Having the preferences I like is cool and I'd like whatever I choose to stay that way.

Besides, maybe this problem is indicative of some underlying problem that I'm not familiar with, so coming here to you gurus of all computer problems just seems like the prudent thing to do.....

All my data on my computers is over there at the side << at My Systems....

So I'm running across an issue with Win7 where my fonts seem to be changing on their own.

First I thought it must just be the settings on my browser, but its extended to my games and things as well. Steam, for instance, has changed from the default text (whatever it was) to a font that tends to overlap each other. I dont have any screen shots to show or I'd post them. Then just this morning all the text in my gmail account was italic on my home pc, but when I checked it from work it was normal.

Does anyone have any ideas? This is extremely annoying!

(My apologies if there is already a post addressing this, I couldn't easily find anything.)

Check your IE font settings. In your Internet Options 'General' tab, click the 'Accessibility' button and make sure all checkboxes are clear.

I have several HP windows 10 units.  Some of them have different ideas of what resetting to default means for IE and each user created has a Priceline shortcut on the favorite bar.
Some have a Priceline shortcut in Programdata\microsoft\windows\start menu\programs but not all. Others are in reprogrammed favorite folders.
Some think having the edge launcher next to the new tab button is default.
How do I reset these to true windows default without having to reinstall IE itself (turning off/on in windows features) or would other things need to be done in addition to this?

Hey all. I realize Windows 10 defaults to last printer used and you have to turn that off in settings. That solved my problem. However, since adding a new PC to my network and using a printer as a network printer, it seems to over ride the setting and keeps changing my default printer to the last used one. Its a tiny thermal printer so this is a huge pain .

Any advice? Again I've already set my default printer and switched the last used option to "off"

Also, the new PC is running on windows 10 but does not have the option to turn off last used printer as default.

Hi!

I re-installed windows last night, and after downloading and installing all 160+ necessary updates successfuly, changed the settings to 'never check for updates' because i want to be able to do that by myself, once a week or so. However every time i check the settings, it seems that it's somehow again set to 'install updates automatically' and i don't know what's causing it.

I have installed some new software, like office and security essentials, etc, which might be what's changing the settings since they also require updates (?) but i'm not sure that's the cause, or if it's some sort of error with Windows Update, etc.

It's not a major issue, but i have heard that some updates failing can cause issues with restarting, so i would very much like to find a solution to the problem.

Thanks.

I'm running Windows XP Professional on a Lenovo X61 Tablet PC, and I'd like to change the sound and audio device default settings so that the microphone will always remain enabled.

I've been doing a lot of dictation in Windows Movie Maker lately. Each time I want to do a dictation I have to open the Master Volume controls by double clicking the speaker icon in the taskbar. Then I have to select Options, Properties, and then check the "Microphone" box in the "Show the following volume controls" menu. This adds the microphone control to the Master Volume controls. Then I have to uncheck the mute box and drag the slide bar up to the appropriate volume. I'd like to save this configuration so that I don't have to redo it evertime I restart my machine.

This is a case where I had one problem and in my attempts to fix it I stupidly made it much worse.

The original problem was that almost every day and some times multiple times per day I would get a blue screen of death which would cause my computer to restart. It had something to do with my video card, I believe it was BCCode: 116. I checked my video card drivers and they were up to date.

Then I made a dumb move. I went to the BIOs and changed it to the "optimized default". I figured switching things to default might help but it led to a bigger problem. I was stupid and didn't keep track of what the settings where previously. I didn't imagine that changing them to default would cause any problems but boy was I wrong.

I get this message when I try to start the computer:

It only gives me two options "Launch Startup Repair (recommended)" and "Start Windows Normally". If I try to start windows normally is fails and takes me back to this same message, so my only option is to repair.

I select repair and it runs. But it fails and gives me this message:

What I have tried:

I tried doing a system restore point, the most recent restore point give me this message.

So I tried the second most recent and it looks like it works at first....

But once the computer restarts I'm back at the "Window's failed to start" screen. I also tried the 3rd most recent restore point with the same effect.

I also tried ... Read more

For a few years now I've had IE delete its history on exit, but having just moved to W8.1 I thought I would see what the general consensus was on continuing with these settings.

The day to day difference really comes down to deleting temp stuff every time the browser is closed vs letting it accumulate until I do a full clean of everything and re-import a cookie file which might be once a week give or take.

First image shows the standard default IE11 clean-up settings. I alter these (and tick the "delete browsing history on exit" tickbox) to the following which get cleaned every time the browser closes.

(Although "delete passwords" is ticked, it doesn't affect imported cookies i.e. I can close the browser and then revisit here for example, and all my log in data is preserved)
Any thoughts ?

If you get a mass storage drive letter when you connect your camera you can try connecting the camera so the drive letter is present, then right click on the drive and choose properties and in properties select the autoplay tab and specifically select an action for the type of files present such as open folder for viewing in windows explorer or whatever else is available.

If that doesn't work let us know, maybe media detector is running as a service and that needs to be shut down or something.

Nothing seems to do the trick! super distracting to watch a show and see the whole screen flicker every few seconds.

Hello sevenforums! I have a problem with my computer i recently purchased. Here is my story.

This all started whenever I wanted to change my text size different by changing my DPI settings. What I did was right click, go to screen resolution, and clicked on "Make text and other items larger or smaller". From this I changed it to 100% from 125%. I noticed it had changed my font size to the 100%. It then made everything SUPER small when I changed my theme settings.

Whenever I right click and go into personalization settings, I do the usual customizing to my likings. Since I want to save the theme, I do so by naming it, blah. Now I want to use the blah theme by click on it, and I do so. Everything is fine and dandy until I right click my desktop to refresh(out of habit). This is the before and after of the font sizes.
Before
After

My workaround was to set a custom DPI setting, log off like it prompts me to, then changing it back to 100%, again prompting to do so. It is so annoying to do so.

Help me! It is driving me crazy and I have no idea how to fix it. I cannot save a theme and change to it, otherwise it results in the small font. It affects all the fonts soon afterwards. Like google chrome will be fine until i exit and restart the program. Then a super small font follows.

Hi,
Yeah, you may think this seems like just a normal message from oc'ing too much, but a problem-I haven't overclocked anything! It booted to that point, then my hard drive went mad clicking and crashed. This was after it being turned on and off to see if my graphics card was booting because I had no video, but it turned out I had just been downright stupid and plugged it into the onboard graphics. Anyone know what could have happened? Thanks

P.S. would the power drawing thing (molex on my case fan) need to have a seperate connector or just draw power from another device? Thanks.

A:'Previous overclock settings failed, default settings enabled'

If this happens just once then I wouldn't worry about it too much but the PSU or HDD could have something to do with it.

You can connect a molex connector fan to its own power connector or you can put it on an optical drive's connector for example, but it's ok to do either as they don't use much power.

1.    Open Registry Editor (regedit.exe).
2.    From the HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE subtree, go to the following key:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Tcpip\Parameters.
3.    In the right pane, add the following value:Name: DefaultTTLType: REG_DWORDValid Range: 1-255
4.    After that, please restart the computer and check the result.

Hope it helps.

Hi marilynmc11

Welcome to TSG!

I am moving your thread to the Security forum.
Please do this:

First create a permanent folder somewhere like in My Documents and name it Hijack This.

Now Click here to download Hijack This. Download and save the file to the Hijack This folder you just created.

Click on Hijackthis.exe to launch the program.

Click the "Scan" button when the scan is finished the scan button will become "Save Log" click that and save the log.

The log should open in notepad. Click on "Edit > Select All" then click on "Edit > Copy" then Paste the log back here in a reply.

DO NOT have Hijack This fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required. Someone here will be glad to advise you on what to fix.

I'm trying to help an elderly friend solve a problem. She has a PC with WIN XP and is using AOL 9.0 as her ISP and browser. I am helping her only via phone, and am not very familiar with the AOL browser interface... thus I can't see what she sees, and I am limited in how well I can assist. I can't guide her to an icon on her toolbar, since I can't visualize it. She is a bright lady, but vision impaired and still intimidated by her computer.

We spent 3 hours today trying to find a way for her to change her default browser from AOL to IE. We spent most of that time on the AOL Help website... which , by the way, appears to be an oxymoron. AOL Help does not offer help, they offer only mysteries and frustration, especially when you are trying to choose something other than their own product. I found many clear instructions on how to change default browser from anything else to AOL... I found utter frustration in finding a way to change from AOL to IE.

Can anyone help me? BTW, I've verified that my friend has IE installed.

A:Changing default browser in AOL

Try this
click start
control panel
internet options (need to be in Classic View to see it)
choose the program tab at the top
under Default Web Browser it should say Internet Explorer is not currently the default web browser, next to it should be a button saying Make Default. Click it
click Apply

If your friend is using AOL as her ISP provider though, I believe she will still need to sign on though AOL before being able to use IE to surf the internet.

Let us know if this helps

After researching it more, I find this forum where people have been having the same problem. I understand I need to change my d-link's router to a different IP address so I can access settings but I don't know how.

Could someone explain to me step by step? And can I do it on my secondary computer rather than the computer that is connected to the SBC modem? Unfortunately the 604 isn't supported by d-link and so I can't just ask them.

Thanks in advance for your help! Sorry if it's an obvious question, I'm absolutely clueless when it comes to networking!

Hey everyone

I'm having a problem with a coworker's printer. Every time he restarts his computer, the default changes from his local printer to one on the network. So far I have tried the following:

1. Delete the network printer. It just ended up adding itself again and making itself the default printer.
2. Make a start up script to change the default printer. Well, it didn't work and I'm guess its my script(just found one from googling).
3. Uninstalling and reinstalling the local print driver. Didn't work.

Right now I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out this problem

Anyone have any ideas?

Is there a way to change the default folder in Windows Explorer? Right now it points to / opens the Documents folder under my library. However, my main 'documents' folder resides on another internal drive (D:/My Documents) which I copied in from XP. I would prefer that when I open my Explorer, it points to that folder.

How do I go about revising the default folder?

Hi Guys, new here and trying to do something which I find an answer to in the Windows Help system.

I have recently changed my wallpapers after finding software that allows me to display different images on my 2 monitors. When I did this I find a nice icon set that matches the style of the new wallpapers. I found out how to change the desktop icons via the Personalization setting, I have also changed the shortcut icons placed on my desktop for new ones. But when I go into folders I am faced with the default Windows icons which I hate and do not want any more.

Short of hacking the registry (which while capable, I am reluctant to do as I have never touched it before) - is there any way to change the default icons for the new ones I downloaded from VistaIcons? That site only tells you how to change the desktop ones sadly.

Also can I replace the "start" icon in the taskbar as well? As the icon set has a more modern version which I would rather see there.

IF anyone can help that would be great.

Thanks and heres hoping...

Max

I have Publisher 2000 on my computer. It works great except for the fact I can't seem to find out how to change the default font. I dislike New Times Roman and do not use it at all. I've tried to find the solution on-line, but all I can get is "text boxes" for 2002, 2003, and 2007. Am I stuck with having to change New Times Roman every time I want another font. I use Goudy Old Style most all the time in my work because I find its readability is better, and would like to have it as my default font. Any hope for that? I will appreciate any clue to how this can be done. lilart

Microsoft Works Word Processor default font is Times New Roman..I really hate that font and would like to change that default font to another style.
Is that possible? I cant seem to find a permanent way to change it. I spend half my time clicking the font button. Any help appreciated

Google says:

Open the MS Works word processor and in the menu bar to Format | Font | Style.

Click on Font and Style and a dialog box pops up.

In the dialog box, choose your font by highlighting it, then highlight the font size that you prefer.

Select a color if you choose or leave the color on auto.

Move to the right side of the dialog box and click on the Set Default button.

Hi thereI recently switched from Internet Explorer 6.0 to the newest version of Firefox. However, I am unable to change the default browser from being IE6.0...things I have tried:- seleting the option "Firefox should be the default browser"- seleting the option "Firefox should check to see if it the default browser"- deselecting the IE option "IE should check to see if it is the default browser"- uninstalling an item called "Internet Explorer Default Browser" from Add/Remove Program- changing how files open through my computer... file/tools/folder options/open htm/html with Firefox- restarting computerIf I go into the firefox options and click "Check Now" to see if it is the default browser, a message comes up saying it is not... it then asks me if I want to change it. I click yes, and then click "Check Now" again, but the message still comes up, even if I restart the computer. It just will not save my preference. Im guessing that somewhere there is a setting that I chose that made IE the default browser and must be deactivated... but I cant find it...I have Windows XP, use Sunbelt Kerio Firewall, AVG Free and Spyware Guard. Thanks a lot! Any help would be greatly appreciated!Colin WeadickXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX(Moderator edit: E-mail address deleted to protect member against spybot harvesting. jgweed)

A:Default Browser Keeps Changing

There are several issues that could be the problem here. The first one is: You must be on your administrator account to make Firefox your default browser. Another method of making Firefox your Default Browser is to do the following: Open up your control panel, launch the Add/Remove Program, click on the Set Program Default and Access tab, select the Custom Tab, Under your default Web Browser, select Mozilla Firefox, and then click Ok.
