General Windows Troubleshooting/Diagnostics Software Suite

Q: General Windows Troubleshooting/Diagnostics Software Suite

I'm looking for a decent General Windows Troubleshooting/Diagnostics Software Suite...

... but none of that garbage registry cleaner... system optimizer... PC tune-up CRAP.

I'm not looking for miracle software, but just a decent reliable software suite with legitimate FUNCTIONAL utilities for diagnostic and troubleshooting of windows systems and minor hardware diagnostics (disk checks, memory test)... no "Optimization" functions *eyeroll* necessary ... besides minor correction/fix commands for small errors...

I can repair most errors and navigate the registry on my own.. I'm just looking for (I hesitate to say it) a 'shortcut' in the diagnosis process for other users for whom I do routine maintenance.

I've heard Sandra 2013 is decent, but can anyone else think of any other, possibly better or equally useful software suites?

Preferred Solution: General Windows Troubleshooting/Diagnostics Software Suite

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Greetings MrWalnuts and welcome to EightForums,

You could try System Information for Windows. It looks like it's freeware if you scroll down a little in the download section. l can't tell you if it's better than Sandra though, just that it's an alternative.

You can also try Hiren's BootCD and load it up with a bunch of diagnostic tools. But I get the feeling that Hiren's isn't what you're looking for.

Hello Everyone,

I am a new member & have been in IT for about 18 years and just wanted to offer some general advice on troubleshooting computer / network issues. Sometimes we forget the simplest things and start barking up the wrong tree. I read something from Microsoft a few years back that I keep in mind while troubleshooting. It is called the DIP-CD method and goes like this:

1.) DEFINE the problem
2.) ISOLATE the cause
3.) PERFORM the repair
4.) CONFIRM the results
5.) DOCUMENT the solution

To remember this, imagine dipping a CD into chocolate.

If you would like more details about each step, I have a little website setup at:

The Reliability and Performance Monitor found in Vista keeps a heap of data sets for response times, processes, configuration data, diagnostics, debug logs, registry keys and performance counters. This tool will help you diagnose windows errors, slow performance or anything else you would like it to help you track down.

1. Open the Start-Menu and search for Performance Monitor.
2. In the performance monitor there is a folder called "Data Collector Sets" found in the left open it and click "System"
3. Here you will find some default diagnostic tools to run on your vista machine, just right-click the name and click start, scroll down to the Reports folder to view your results.

You can also add your own customised monitors under the Data Collector sets folder for a more complete view of the systems performance handling, Just remember too many sets might slow your system down and vista allready runs a Reliability Monitor every hour.

This tool will point anyone in the right direction to solve issues they are having with vista or the hardware, Include the report in a support request and it can help diagnose the problem very quickly. Its proberly the most usefull feature found in vista.

I've put together a number of apps for anyone who doesn't know their specs or needs troubleshooting info. The archive contains Belarc Advisor, Process Explorer, a shortcut to dxdiag, and a .bat file that will list all the drivers and their dates. There are also 3 guides, 2 of which are in my sig, the third is a guide to event viewer.

There is also a readme for getting your system specs and uploading them here as well as a brief intro to the apps. The archive is an SFX archive, so just double-click and choose where to extract the diagnostics folder. Any feedback would be appreciated - or complaints.

Can anyone who has hands on experience with PC diagnostics software and/or hardware recommend any particular software or hardware testers.

How good is AIDA64, a review I read on this looks quite impressive.

There are many motherboard and general hardware testers on ebay, are there any that stand out as being particularly reliable that will also work on laptops..

I am also interested in finding good data retrieval software for recovering data from faulty and/or corrupt hard drives. Are there any that perform better than Stella Phoenix.

I repair a few PC's a month and it would be very useful to have some equipment that can confirm the health of mobo's and CPU's without having to diagnose by a process of elimination.

I don't have the finance to experiment with the various testers that are available.

Any recommendations would be appreciated.

A:PC diagnostics software/hardware

This type of Computer testing hardware and software is not really necessary or even useful to an experienced computer tech. The motherboard testers are only as good as the tech is. A shorted data bus will give false results at best. The useful tools include a spare power supply, an inexpensive power supply tester, spare memory, a spare IDE and SATA Desktop hard drive (and notebook drives) and a good true RMS multimeter... and that's it

Hi, can anyone help me by suggestion some software to troubleshoot computer problems?
such as to fix malware, speed up your PC etc. it would be nice to hear some of your suggestions. thanks

A:What are some troubleshooting software?

My suggestions:

For troubleshooting, Open Control Panel > Troubleshooting
System Maintenance Troubleshooter - Turn On or Off
Run the troubleshooters as needed.

For Speed-up / Optimize see this tutorial:
Optimize Windows 7

If I had a suspected malware problem i would create a new thread in the System Security forum.
There are trained Security Experts there that can help.
http://www.sevenforums.com/system-security/

Fill in your System Specs so others know what hardware / software you have:
System Info - See Your System Specs

I keep my systems up to date, especially security patches for Windows and all programs i use.
I run CCleaner file cleaner a couple of times per month, to clean up temp files not needed.

I create periodic System Backup Images, so i can easily restore if anything goes wrong.

I wouldn't use/trust any "Fix-it-all" software that i know of ...

When i have a problem i can't fix myself, i create a SF thread for that specific problem.
There are many experts in SF willing to help solve problems.

It probably detected, that there is a new version, but since it can not be installed on your system, it skips it.
Your GPU is not supported anymore, so you can just disable update checking for AMD drivers.

I think, that the latest driver supporting your GPU was 15.12 beta, not Final, but I found only:

I have a Dell laptop purchased in 2008 running Vista.

It's always been a bit of a "Problem Child" so to speak but lately it is getting really bad. Every day when I start it up, after about five minutes or so the whole PC just locks up and freezes. I can't use Task Manager either. Sometimes the screen will go black and a message will appear saying something about not being able to create a security login or ID or something (my apologies but I am at work writing this and not at my laptop). I read in another forum that this issue might have something to do with Windows Defender and the one forum I was on said to disable it which I did. This did not stop the freeze ups from occurring.

I'm sick of this. I can't even post a decent question on a forum like this because I don't know what is wrong with my laptop. Even if I try and run a PC diagnostics it too freezes up at some point and I have to turn the laptop off.

Is there are reliable, reputable PC diagnostics software anyone can recommend? I don't want some dinky software that only fixes registry errors and deletes old internet files. I want one that will really tell me what is going wrong with my PC and tell me how I can fix it.

Thank you to anyone who can assist.

A:PC Diagnostics - A good, solid, reputable software?

Hi -

Have you given thought to reinstalling Vista? It takes about 1 - 1.5 hours of system time, followed by your installation of apps.

The freezing can be caused by heat build up. Check temps with SpeedFan -

http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

Please provide system info. Run this app - it will take 5-8 minutes and will gather the necessary files -

http://jcgriff2.com/0x2/Windows_NT6_..._jcgriff2_.exe

The output will be in a newly created folder in Documents named Windows_NT6_BSOD_jcgriff2

Zip the entire folder up and attach to your next post.

This is waht i have so far. MMC does not know what Version of IE i am using. How and where does it detect it. This is the most important tool in Windows now to use any of the old windows option. It will not give me access, even if its running in the background, if it thinks i have less than IE 5.5.

Heres a link from another forum that was helping me:

Two actually:

http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=32559

http://forums.net-integration.net/index.php?showtopic=32548

I cant run any of the system stuff, and cant get access to any of the system setting that in the proccess require MMC to be functioning. Thats alot.

So just as bad as microsoft, IE broke my operating system!!! I dont think its linked specifically to IE, and i doubt an install of IE would help. I cant uninstall SP2 right now either because of a missing catalog. The uninstaller runs but its missing something and wont finish. So its in microsofts/windows hands at this point and they know nothing about it. I aint emailing microsoft!! GGRR.. So anyway An uninstall of SP2 to see if it will fix the whatever caused the change is out of the question.

I have also already gone into Add remove and tried removing IE from the system components and put it back with the windows CD. It did nothing. Ive tried all the other Add/remove options. They are listed in one of the links.

I'm in XP pro, too. Not XP home.

I've run the MMC software on three differenct comptuers all networked and running XP and on one computer it works fine and on the others, it hangs (hourglass running) although the Momistu player can access the computer fine (it loads, I just can't get to the menu choices, so it doesn't finish loading). I've tried selective startup and closing all programs running--same thing. Something is stopping the program from finishing loading. Any ideas on how to troubleshoot to find out what is stopping the programs from loading?

Again, since it works fine on one computer and not on two others--all running XP, it has to be something specific about the two computers that it won't load on.

Hey all

I have a question regarding drivers and updates for some of my software on my computer.

I always go to Cnet's Catchup service to look for necessary updates, and while most of the time, it's easy to update, this time I am confused.

For instance, I have a couple different references to display drivers. I have a Relisys monitor and a GeForce 2 video card, and these are the updates I see:

ATI Mach64VT Display Driver
Matrox Display Driver

As for my sound card, I have a Creative Ensonique 16 card. I see these updates as far as sound goes:

ES1788 Audio Driver
Sound Blaster 16/32/AWE Driver
Soundblaster 16 Driver for Win95

Alot of these say Windows 95, and 98, but from what I have seen, no Windows XP. I don't even know if my drivers are up to date. Can anyone shed some light on the above? Should I download any of them? All of them?

Hello all. I'm looking for a good free program I can use with my Webcam. I have a Lifecam VX-6000, and with the latest drivers (found online) I am still unable to adjust the framerate, so it stayes locked at around 4fps. The framerate can go higher, and I have been able to change the framerate when using ustream's little applet to broadcast.
I've tried SuperWebcam and ManyCam, but I can't get past the install, they don't seem meant for a 64-bit machine. Does anyone know of any free programs that let me adjust my webcam's framerate, which will also work with the 64-bit version of Vista Home Premium? Thanks.

A:General Webcam Software Suggestions

There is a another program that does work with Vista64, as we have used it. Try Webcamamx. Alternatively (my preferred method) is to feed a an A/V signal from my camera into a TV tuner. This keeps my processor load to a minimum and allows conventional video manipulation methids to be used. Check out the Ustream Users Community Forum on Ustream..

If a computer has run stable for years when a specific software is not installed, but blue screens when this specific software is installed, is it *positively* the fault of the software, and not a problem with my computer?

Software not installed --> Stable
Software installed --> Guaranteed crash
Software uninstalled --> Stable
Repeat continuously...

A:General BSOD vs software question

Its highly probable (99.999%) that it's one of the new software component files clashing with the operating system files. There does exist, however, a very small chance that the installation of the new software coincides with a hardware component fault - I would consider this to be so rare that its extremely improbable.

The best way to check is to upload the BSOD .dmp files so we can confirm that.

1. Download the DM Log Collector application to your desktop by clicking the link below

DM Log Collector.exe

2. Run it by double-clicking the icon on your desktop, and follow the prompts.
3. Locate the .ZIP file that is created on your desktop, and upload it here in your next reply.

Before moving my computer from WIN 98SE to WIN XP(Home) I am in the process of verifying whether all my critical software is the latest updated, and XP supported version.

My question relates to software installation for any software on my existing harddrive that I identify needing updated version (hardware drivers included). Can you tell me if it makes any difference whether I install such software updates before or after installing XP itself? My thinking is that as long as the new version supports WIN XP then it shouldn't matter if I migrate to XP and have all the newest drivers and software versions installed and residing on my existing WIN 98SE harddrive...but maybe that's just wishful thinking.

As an example I have a piece of software I use to backup my entire system and I just downloaded the new version supporting XP earlier this week, but I have not installed it yet. Before I go ahead and install the new version I will uninstall the old version. Will it matter if I do the uninstall_OLD/install_NEW process now, or should I wait and do it AFTER the XP installation itself is complete?

Thank you so much for your assistance.

A:XP Upgrade - General Software Question

I have found it much better to do the compatability test, find what XP doesn't like, search and find the XP drivers or upgrades, install them first, then install XP. You'll find the installation a little easier that way.

Hello,

My machine has been experiencing intermittent BSODing over the last few weeks and I wonder if you could give me a hand troubleshooting it? I'll summarise what i've done so far. It's not given me anything today, as I say, it's intermittent.

System Info:
Processor Name: Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz
Processor Information: Intel64 Family 6 Model 60 Stepping 3
Graphics Information: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780 Ti
Mobo: Z87I-PRO
System BIOS: 0903
Installed System Memory: 16 GB
Operating System: Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit (originally installed on system)
Age of system: 1 year, 1 month
OS Reinstalls: None
This is a desktop PC
System Manufacturer: Purchased from ChillBlast
Troubleshooting so far:
* Checked EventViewer for after the crashes. The only useful thing showing is that the Kernel service is shutting down - which I suppose it would if power to it was interrupted.
* Opened up case to check components. Everything seated well. Extremely tidy cabling (if I may say so myself; nothing getting in any fan's way).
* Ran GPU stress test - all fine.
* Ran Processor stress test - all fine
* Ran driver verifier (ran for about 20 minutes) and nothing crashed.

Attached Files:
* PerfmonReport
* Your app collection dump
* IPDT Processor Test results

Appreciate your support :)

I recently purchased a new laptop running Windows 7.  On setup, I was pleased to find that it connected to my home network without much complaint.  However, I soon noticed a misstep -- after putting my laptop to sleep, upon waking, it
would consistently fail to connect to network.
I've tried disabling IP Helper, as well as the wireless adapter's IPv6 protocola
la advice on other forums.  I've also ensured that the driver settings do not allow for disabling to save power.  Seeing that none of these worked, I decided uninstall and delete the driver and install a newer version (in a related issue,
the driver update feature failed to detect the existence of a newer version -- why?).
This appears to have fixed the connection issue.  However, still, after sleeping the laptop and waking, although it connects to the router, I still need to reset the IP command-line via ipconfig /release + /renew.
I was running Vista on my previous machine, and I know that its Network Diagnostic tool would, when presenting solutions, frequently suggest that my computer had the wrong IP and that I should reset it.  I was hoping throughout this process
that the Network Diagnostic troubleshooter would present a similar option.  Instead, however, no matter what I do with my wireless, the troubleshooter only ever returns the message "Troubleshooter couldn't identify any problems."  Whether or not
I check the box for auto-repair or run ... Read more

A:Troubleshooting the Network Troubleshooting Utility / After-Sleep Connection Problems

Hi,
To avoid confusion Let us focus on the first issue within this thread first.
Can you access internet when connecting the laptop directly via cable?
Where did you download the newer version of network card driver? Usually, the “driver update” feature from device manager will go to Microsoft update catalog website for the corresponding driver instead of the manufacture’s website. AT
this point, I would suggest install the latest driver
here. Please note: Microsoft don't write drivers, for any driver related issue, the OEM is always the best resource to turn to. Your understanding is appreciated.
As a workaround, you can prevent the network card from sleeping by the following method:
Open Device manager->expand Network adapter-> right click on the wireless adapter->Properties->under Power Management tab, uncheck the box before “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”.
Is anything unclear, please feel free to post back.

Articles like http://arstechnica.com/security/2015/09/security-wares-like-kaspersky-av-can-make-you-more-vulnerable-to-attacks/ show that security wares themselves exhibit vulnerabilities. That is not surprising, as security ware is non-perfect software after all. The upshot is that security wares that you install in your computer not only increases your security but also increases your vulnerabilities.

There can thus be something like too much security ware, as that would incur too much vulnerabilities. (This issue is different from duplication of AVs and similar misconfigurations)

The subsequent issue then is, what limited number of security wares should you select for maximum protection?

Let's assume prudent computing habits behind a residential router/WAP with strong passwords, i.e. prudent email/browser/Internet habits with the user being reasonably aware of computer/Internet security, however, without the user being a security expert.

In such a 'prudent' scenario:  How does a well-selected, well-balanced security software suite look like?

A:Best well-selected, well-balanced security software suite

Dunno.  Like purchasing fleet cars, each company has to decide what is the best vehicle/what are the best vehicles -- for them.  Based on my reading here, there is no one best well-balanced security software suite.  I suppose internet security suites such as Avira, AVG, Avast, Comodo, Kaspersky, McAfee, Norton, and so many others would disagree -- however, I like what Quietman7 always posts:  end user is the primary and most important component, with several programs from several sources completing the picture.
