Trouble booting Lenovo Z570 Laptop, everything hangs or black screen

Q: Trouble booting Lenovo Z570 Laptop, everything hangs or black screen

Hello everyone. I've been given a Lenovo Z570 laptop with little background information other than the fact that it refuses to boot. A clean install is not an option at this point due to the personal information on the laptop. When I turn on the laptop, it displays the Lenovo sign, then boots into a screen that says Windows Error Recovery. I've been working through the troubleshooting guide here with little to no luck. Here is what I encountered on each step:

1. Using "Last Known Good Configuration" results in a black screen that does not go away or change.

2. Using "Repair your computer" under Advanced Boot Options leads to a black screen. If I try using a Windows installation disk, the screen hangs on the initial "Setup is starting" screen indefinitely. Using a repair disk gets farther- it lets me choose some settings, but then hangs on a screen that says "Searching for Windows Installations". I'm not sure what a UEFI install is but I assume my hard disk is not UEFI because I did not see any options in the BIOS

Edit: I'm sure that the installation disk is not corrupted: tried running it in another Windows 7 laptop and it loaded without problems.

3. The hard drive is still detected in BIOS set up

4. Trying the System Restore leads to a black screen

5. As mentioned above, the repair disk hangs on "Searching for Windows Installations"

7. Booting into Safe Mode with Networking leads to a black screen

8. Not available, cannot run Safe Mode

9. I created a bootable USB with Partition Wizard and I ended up on a screen that says "Windows Error Recovery" with two options: 1. Launch Startup Repair and 2. Start Windows Normally. Both options lead to a black screen.

10. Not available, Partition Wizard does not run.

That is all I have tried so far. Will try the remaining steps but not much hope left. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thank you!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I went through the steps for malware removal with one of the pros who review the HiJack This logs. Upon completion, I noticed my PC hangs on the black screen when I start or restart. This had not happened prior to the infection. Perhaps a registry issue caused by the malware? It takes several attempts either hitting the reset button or the power button to get it to fully boot up. I'm leary of restaring at all for fear that it won't come back up. Your HiJack This pro referred me to this forum for further assistance. I am running Windows XP Pro SP2 and am including the URL to my HJT thread for further info in case it may be of assistance. http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/ind...mp;#entry949041Thank you,OrygunGal

Try doing a System Restore, if this doesn't work there are a couple of things we can do.Start> All Programs> Accessories> System Tools> System Restore. When this opens make sure that "Restore my computer to an earlier time" is chosen, and click on Next>.The dates appearing in bold are the dates that you can restore to, click on the date that you want and then click Next> to start the System Restore. This may take a long time to complete, and when it is done it will restart your computer. When the computer restarts and you have logged on as the administrator a Restoration Complete page will appear, click on OK to complete the process.

I have several T540p's in our fleet.  All are running windows 7 pro x64.  When the laptop is booted from full off, or resumed from sleep, the screen is very dim (say 10%) unless the power cord is plugged in.  When dim, you cannot raise the brightness from the keys.  This happens even at the BIOS and Lenovo boot screens, so it doesn't seem to be a windows problem, but something in the basic laptop configuration itself. Any ideas?

So everything has been working fine on my laptop until about 10:30PM EST tonight. I bought it new in August 2011.
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium
CPU: Intel Core i7-2630QM @ 2.00 GHz
HD: 750 GB
It's always been a fine machine with NO problems.
However, last night there were Windows 7 updates that were installed and then restarted my computer. I had not gotten a chance to check exactly what they were though. About 10:30 this evening, flash crashed in Mozilla Firefox which is not that uncommon, and from there Firefox closed, and so did my Microsoft Word and Excel apps that were open. From there, my computer began to shut down and restart. When it went to restart, all it could do was go to the opening Lenovo screen which gives you the F2 (setup option) and F12 (multiboot menu option) as it typically does. Besides a thin strip at the top that appeared after about 30 secs that only displays moving static that eventually will just stick, that is where the boot process ends. No Windows 7 screen, and certainly no opportunity to boot into safe mode to check for any problems. The screen freezes and goes nowhere.
So basically, all I'm getting in terms of boot options are lenovo features, not windows 7 features, meaning it won't boot into windows 7 or windows 7 safe mode no matter what I try. The biggest problem here is that I have no windows 7 disc to even try to boot from my dvd drive.
Anybody have any suggestions on what the probl... Read more

My Z570 (upgraded from original Windows 7 to Windows 10) locked up so was forced to restart.  On restarting, it showed the Lenovo boot screen, then briefly the Windows cubes, then the screen went black. Restarting again got as far as the recovery options. In the advanced options, I first selected the 'Repair' option, which went through the diagnosis cycle but reported that it could not repair the computer. Next tried to recover from restore points. There were 3 listed, all in 2017. All of them failed (one failure was trying to write to low-core at address x00000008). Next tried to reset choosing the option to re-install Windows keeping existing files. That worked, and normal service was resumed. However a day later it locked up again and I was again forced to restart. The same symptoms then re-occurred - on restarting, it showed the Lenovo boot screen, then briefly the Windows cubes, then the screen went black. Repair didn't work, there were now no restore points, and this time reset didn't work either - it got part way through the reset and went to black screen. So now completely stuck. Hitting F2 during boot, then F10 to save configuration, gets the computer to try a repair which then gets to me the recovery options. So I can start a command line to look at any logs that might exist. Please advise next steps.

A:laptop hangs when during sleep or hibernation with black screen

Hello rajdeepak and welcome if you feel it might be a memory issue and want to do a thorough memory test mate use memtest you need to make a bootable disk for it set the BIOS to boot from optical and let it run.

This app does take a fair while to run and you should do at least seven passes. Sometimes you may find errors fairly quickly. This doesn't involve the OS by the way.

One day I open my laptop then its just black screen, then i force reset then open again then its ok. It happened few times before it became permanent with no booting at all. Not anything from the screen, not even the windows log in sound, it is not really booting at all.My battery is dead, but I'm still using it. And just bought a new adapter 2 days before it happened. I don't know if its my charger or battery or the source. I try troubleshooting like removing battery and putting on the adapter or vice versa to turn it on, not a luck. Removing battery and adapter and press the power button for a minute. And removing one RAM and switch, but still no. I'm planning to take it to the expert already but if you have any suggestion please let me know. Also, I want to know what causing this. I just bought my 3rd replacement adapter, the second one only lasts for six months. What am I doing wrong that causing my adapters to be broken.
Thanks Guys!

A:My laptop is not booting, just black screen.

Try looking through this video, he does several tests to troubleshoot the laptop black screen problem. (you may have tried some of them but stick with it and watch through). I have had this problem with 2 laptops now and I know how annoying it can be trying to fix.

Try to connect your laptop to an external monitor if the problem persists it could be something related to display has shorted on the motherboard
If the laptop is still under warranty, they will fix it but it may cost you.
A private computer expert would be able to tell you more but this too will cost you.
Have you tried looking on your laptop manufacturers website to see if this is a common issue with your model?
The adapters should not cause issue, unless they are not the same as the original (Voltage, Watts and Amps etc.) It is possible a faulty adapter could have caused a short on the motherboard however.
It is also possible the flexi wiring between the base and the lid has broken disabling the screen (If this is the case the external monitor test will work and a display will be shown on the monitor screen)

Hope this helps,

Hey all, I have an old Toshiba A30 Laptop.

What works: Bios and boot selection.

When I turn it on it goes past the Toshiba screen then goes black and does not continue to the windows load screen. Now...if I go into boot selection and select the hard drive (which I did try changing to boot #1) it gives me a SMART failure replace and backup data error and then lets me continue and boot to windows fine. Same if I do a boot to Cd-Rom, it will boot the cdrom then boot to the hard drive after. I've looked through the bios many times and cant find anything...theres very limited options, cant even turn off SMART.

I have been attempting to repair bad sectors on the hard drive when Hiren's Boot CD. It usually locks up. Is there anything I can do to get the Hard Drive to boot correctly or should I be replacing the hard drive?

For the past few weeks I have noticed my laptop becoming slower and slower. As of a few days ago it has been ridiculously slow and is sometimes unresponsive to commands or keyboard. It used to go straight to a black screen with only the cursor after start up but now sometimes starts up, although very slow. Now my desktop started doing it too. I don't know what's going on with them. I had not had any virus protection for a while and recently installed webroot complete 2012 on both of them and scanned, finding nothing. My desktop sometimes loads into safe mode when I tell it to, however it still is extremely slow, SAme with he laptop. And if I try to start up the desktop on normal is stays on black screen. I have noticed that sometimes I will get the "Microsoft windows isn't responding" pop up. My control alt delete doesn't work on either of them either, it pos up suing something like " the control alt delete function could not be started blah blah blah". I have to get on this forum via my iPad which thankfully still works fine. I'm not very computer savvy when it comes to the whole bios stuff nor some other stuff. But I know the basics pretty well. Help please! Lol I'm trying to install system suite from avantquest onto each of the. Via safe mode when it will work but my laptop is giving. R troubles and currently is on normal and is slow to open the program.

Hello everyone! I've found several topics on the forums regarding issues similiar to mine, however their solutions either didn't work for me or were a little too confusing to follow. So here's to hoping that this can be resolved!

Earlier, I was using my HP laptop with Windows Vista when the computer suddenly froze, then abruptly shut off. When I tried to reboot, everything seemed normal at first (albeit much, much slower), until about ten minutes in when the screen went black. The only thing visible was a strobing white underscore in the upper left corner.

Needless to say, the situation hasn't changed. If I press ctrl + alt + delete, the computer restarts. It will not allow me to access F8 (to boot it in safe mode), however it will let me adjust the boot priorities. I've tried booting it with the hard drive being first on the list (which wasn't the default setting) with no luck.

I've also tried removing the battery and holding the power button, letting it "cool down" for a couple of hours before rebooting again, and letting it stay on the black screen to see if something would change.

I'm really worried that it has something to do with the HD, as I forgot to backup my most recent files. Is there any way to verify this? Would there be some kind of strange noise coming from the computer, or any other indicator? I've never had a HD fail on me (knock on wood), so I honestly don't know what to expect. Could it be som... My Dell Laptop was given to a technician to change the screen frame as it was broken.
The hard disk was removed to copy some urgently required files for office.
I connected the hard disk to hp laptop, copied the files, chose the Hide option of Pictures folder in hard disk inorder to hide the Pictures folder, and gave back the hard disk to the technician to fix it.
After fixing it, he told the Windows is corrupted. I got the laptop back to check it.
After booting, it goes to a black screen. I tried in safe mode also. It still goes to a black screen.
Startup repair runs for a while and it again goes to a black screen with cursor.
Kindly reply me, if you have any solution.

Hi, I'm writing for a friend who has a HP Pavillion laptop running Vista. For the past few weeks, his laptop was pot luck pick as to weather it would boot up or not. It's gradually gotten worse from 50% of the time to 20% of the time. When he powers up, he gets the black screen, no logo, no cursor, etc. He's tried reconnecting power, battery, etc. to no avail. He said he wasn't able to get into safe mode either but I'm not sure he really attempted that properly. If I can get into safe mode (tell me how), what can we do to see if it's been infected? Could this be a hard drive issue? It's almost 3yrs old. He said he could not recall any particular "odd" incident occurring just prior to this issue. Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to offer.

Crashes (BSOD), unexpected shutdowns, sudden freezing, random restarting, and booting problems could be symptomatic of a variety of things to include hardware/software issues, overheating caused by a failed processor fan, bad memory (RAM), failing or underpowered power supply, CPU overheating, motherboard, video card, faulty or unsigned device drivers, CMOS battery going bad, BIOS and firmware problems, dirty hardware components, programs hanging or unresponsive in the background, and sometimes malware. Even legitimate programs like CD Emulators (Daemon Tools, Alchohol 120%, Astroburn, AnyDVD) can trigger crashes, various stop error messages and system hangs so you may want to disable them if using any while troubleshooting. If the computer is overheating, it usually begins to shutdown/restart on a more regular basis. Troubleshooting for these kinds of issues can be arduous and time consuming. Were you wearing an antistatic wrist strap while working on it?

If not, ESD (Electrostatic Discharge) may well have caused damage to electronic components.

If you were, double-check to make sure you have everything re-connected properly ... including applying new thermal paste between the CPU and heatsink if you might have loosened it.

Hello my friends,
Having trouble with an HP Pavillion dv6423om running Windows Vista SP2 (32bit)(no recovery partition available). I am not sure what kind of event might have caused this. My daughter isn't a good historian that way. The machine boots quickly and fine right up to the desktop. I get a glimpse of a couple of updates (Adobe, and another one that I can't make out), that come up on the screen. Then it goes black. I can still hear the cpu fan running and all the touch buttons that are lit up above the keyboard are still lit. It seems to be running fine just no image on the screen, not evening the back lighting.
It boots in safe mode perfectly without problems. I first tried to restore to a previous date. I tried every date rolling back until I ran out of them. Wasn't that many however. I have uninstalled many programs and games that were unimportant to try to solve the issue, without positive results.I have run ADWCleaner, JRT, and Tweaking.com's Toolbox for Windows, all to no avail. What I would like to do is to perform a clean boot and then start to activate drivers in an organized fashion to pin the problem down.
Anyone have any good ideas to solve this issue? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A:Vista laptop has Black screen after booting up

Do a clean boot as explained here. You should be able to start msconfig in safe mode. If the computer boots normally you will have to enable a few startup and service items at a time to determine which is causing the problem.

3 days ago i turned of my computer and left it turned of over the night. Then when i tried to turn it back on again, i get the windows 8/8.1 boot logo, then when it dissapears i just get a black screen, however, i get the windows tone after a while indicating that the system is running, and that the only problem is that the screen is not displaying anything.

I have tried booting in safe-mode, that worked. But no matter what i changed (start-up programs and resolution) nothing helped.

I have tried connecting another screen to my laptop, but that screen also displays the black color.

I should perhaps mention that my laptop originally came with Windows 7, but i upgraded it to Windows 8, and later on 8.1.

I have a dell insperation and after having upgraded to windows 10, I came across a few issues. The update when well and windows 10 is working on my laptop, however, I have an issue where I am presented with a black screen when i start my computer. I do see a dell screen and a windows boot screen before it goes black so i know the issue is not a hardware issue, however after the windows boot screen passes (the one with the blueish window icon) the screen goes to black, but it is still on (meaning the monitor is still turned on just not displaying anything). the reason i know that windows installed fine is that external monitors do work, just not my laptop monitor. I have already reinstalled windows 10 and have made sure all my drivers are up to date. Windows 10 is just not reconizing my laptops screen as a usable monitor. Please help. My G50-80 Laptop (Lenovo) - Type 80L0 running Win10 stopped working back in 2016, My warranty ran out right when it returned from repairs and lucky for me it just happened to break 2 weeks after being repaired! I tried a few things back then but nothing worked and I gave up, buying a cheap laptop just to get me through my job. I'm returning to this laptop though because I feel like it can be fixed and I want to give it to a friend if I can fix it. I've tried hard resetting, with and without battery. Opened it up, reseated ram and memory. I can't access BIOS. I plugged it into an HDMI display to see if something was wrong with the laptop display. I might have done a bunch of other things I can't remember. Nothing has worked. I did notice when reseating that my laptop had room for a two-part memory but the second part wasn't there, I don't know if this was a mistake by the repair team? Or if it's not needed. (My computer knowledge is lacking.)  I sent my laptop in for repair because the USB got overloaded and broke every input on the right side of the computer. Running Windows 8
My laptop is currently infected with some form of Malware. I have removed most of it as far as I can tell, though a problem still remains with my laptop screen being flat black when I boot up the laptop. I am still able to open programs and do things on the laptop, albeit with a workaround with Task Manager's "Run new task" feature.
I am running Malwarebytes, for the second time since this happened after restarting to finish a scan. Not sure what else I can say to help identify the problem, so I'll list the processes in Task Manager that I dont recognize, then say if any of them solved the problem by closing them
Spooler Subsystem App
WMI Provider Host (this one I close out and it seems to come back, located ina folder named "WBEM in the "System32" folder
If anyone happens to have ay insight as to what may be causing me to have no desktop, or anything besides a black screen and the ability to open Task Manager, I would appreciate the feedback

I have a friends Asus x54h laptop that is not booting, and it is droving me crazy.

What is happening:
When the power button is pressed the fan turns on and some indicator lights turn on including the hard drive indicator light. Then the disc drive makes a noise and the hard drive indicator light turns off. Here is a picture of the indicator lights:

Nothing ever shows up on the screen.
Sometimes after running 1-5 minutes the laptop will just completely turn off.

What I have tried:
-Booting with just the power cord connected.

-Booting with just the battery connected.

-Taking out the battery and unplugging the power cord and holding the power button for 40 seconds, then plug in and try to boot again.

-Attaching a screen and pushing the keyboard buttons to add an additional screen. Nothing showed up on it.

-Taking it's hard drive and putting it in a good laptop. It booted into Windows and ran without issues.

-Replacing the current stick of ram with a new one from crucial.com. This laptop only has one RAM slot and I don't have any compatible RAM so I had to just buy one. I put it in, and nothing happened differently. Also, if I remove the RAM completely nothing happens differently. This made me think that there might be an issue with the RAM slot. I looked at it, and there seems to be something a little weird about one of the connectors. Here is a picture:

I am not sure, but I thought that this might be causing the RAM to not be detected. I used a ... Read more

My Lenovo g50-70 i3 doesn't seem to start up. The screen is black and nothing is moving inside (fan not moving, hdd not making any sound) only way I can understand that it's on is with the power light. Tried hard boot, taking ram put and putting it back but nothing worked. I added ram recently but doubt that is the case. The laptop itself is pretty old as well. So what can I do?

I have a Lenovo Y50-70 laptop and I have a really weird and frustrating problem. My laptop runs absolutely fine except when I take certain actions that include: Visiting a few specific website, going full screen on vlc and youtube, sometimes when running a game like secondlife. Then my screen turns absolutely blank/black with no cursor or anthing else visible. The laptop still runs absolutely fine in the background, eg responds to keystrokes, makes appropriate sounds and respond to other input but absolutely nothing will bring back the display to normal. I have to either put the system to sleep and wake up right after or restart it and then it runs completely fine until the next random event that triggers this happens. What's completely baffling to me is that visiting the site www.msi.com and www.firestormviewer.org will almost certainly give me a black screen immediately while the other causing factors are a bit random. I've tried the following:1. Install the drivers giving on lenovo's website as well as the latest ones for both my intel as well as nvidia gpu.2. Reinstalled windows 10 several times, even asked a lenovo engineer to install a copy of the windows with all the lenovo drivers that come with the pc originally. 3. Stopped windows update because it was installing newer versions of the drivers automatically. 4. Tried various browsers, msi.com still almost always gives me black screen on IE, edge and chrome.5. I changed the motherboard and my hard ... Read more

A:Lenovo Y50-70 laptop gives completely unresponsive black screen when opening certain websites.

I have exactly the same issue. Random black screen triggered by various events, like:visiting certain websites (msi.com for example is instant black screen, but there are others), mostly on full screen but on some sites always (happens with all browsers, FF, IE, Chrome, Edge)maximizing certain windows, like having console windows open and bringing them up to maximized from minimized state (happens around 10-20% of the time)I also have Linux Mint installed apart from Windows 10, and it happens there too, though less frequently! So I assume this is some hardware issue. It is extremely frustrating, and not something you expect from a high-end "premium" laptop! My colleagues were mocking me for not getting the ASUS and instead settling for "a lenovo". I won't make that mistake next time...

Dear Tenforums users,

I have recently encountered problems or rather peculiarities with my relatively new Lenovo laptop;
whenever I'm working on it and switch to another tab, there is a chance of random black stripes and dots occuring in the screen. Not (yet) to the extend that I cannot work on it and when I switch tabs again they are gone from the previous tab.

Screenshots of the problem:

I am just wondering what might be the cause and if I should be worrying myself about future defects. (especially since my warranty is till february 2017)

Thank you all for your time!

Hi, I have recently updated my laptop with Win10 x64 Pro and all was working fine, I have the latest drivers, no other conflicts in Device Manager. This started recently may be 4 days back, in the middle of work, suddenly horizontal or vertical lines appear, it keeps flickering, when I restart, this is from very start, some times, it goes away on its own and sometimes I have to hit laptop body randomly anywhere and screen comes back. There is no set pattern or trigger, jus random, I have attached the screen image here. Any Advice would be appreciated.  Random lines in display?

it looks like your hard drive has gone bad. i have a Y70 touch. i have upgraded to windows 10 3 times in the past year and each time the hard drive has gone bad shortly afterwards. although my screen flickers were not nearly as bad as yours, they were very annoying until the hard drive completely died the first 2 times. this last time i knew what was happening and was able to catch the problem before the hard drive completely failed. i had windows 10 installed without all the extra lenovo and other manufacturer programs that i didn't need and weren't compatible with windows 10. i never tried rolling back the system but i was told it wouldn't have helped at the point when the hard drives had failed.

I found another post on here nearly a year old outlining the same issue. There was no reply to it so I'm not confident I will get one now. ThinkPad L580 goes to sleep or black screen when the user's wrist touches the left side below the keyboard and next to the trackpad. Does anyone know of any way of fixing this??? Hey everyone, My Intel HD graphics 520 driver continuously crashes and basically shuts down my computer. The power button/keys are still on, but I just get a black screen (with some light behind it), as if it is in sleep mode, and I cannot wake up my computer anymore. The only solution then is to just force it off by holding the power button and restart it. I feel it happens at random, but it seems to occur more often when I'm playing a video or something (although that may just be a coincidence). I've had this problem for a long time and have tried several times to reinstall or update the driver. Because I got so fed up with it I just disabled the driver and used the NVIDIA Geforce 920M driver, which works sort of fine with the only big disadvantages that I can't increase or reduce the brightness of my screen anymore and can't run certain programs/games properly. So, therefore, I'm still looking for a solution.  Can anybody help me out?

Hello all, I've been trying to figure out an issue with no luck. I'm servicing a M900z 2-in-1 desktop that seems to sometimes hang at the Lenovo splash screen. Sometimes when booting, a 9C or B4 will appear on the bottom right, hanging at the splash screen. What I have tried:- Re-seating Memory & HD. Flashing the BIOS. Re-imaged machine. Checked & updated drivers. Checked for windows updates & all is updated. I used chkdsk utility, along with SFC, & no errors were found. Could the hanging potentially be a hardware issue? This issue seems to be very intermittent - I've had the desktop at my desk for a few days, performing lots of restarts. In the BIOS, it boots directly to the HD. Sometimes it will boot right away & not hang, while other times it will hang for awhile, & eventually boot. When it doesn't boot, I constantly have to restart the machine and eventually it will boot.  Thanks for any support.

HP laptop presario dv6000 running Windows XP Media center edition

When you turn it on, it loads all the way up to the Windows loading screen where the progress bar loads/acts normally, but the next screen is black and does not progress past this.

What I've tried:
Booting in VGA mode. Same deal.
Booting in safe mode. Starts to load the drivers/sys files, then hangs and does not progress.
Booting with "Last known good configuration". Same deal.
Hooking it up to an external monitor and doing all of the above, no change in behavior (note: when the monitor is black it doesn't go inactive - i.e. the power light is green and not orange)

Pulled the hard drive and ran checkdisk. No bad sectors.

Booted with XP CD and started the Recovery Console to attempt using some commands, but am stopped due to this error:
"Setup did not find any hard disk drives installed in your computer.

Make sure any hard disk drives are powered on and properly connected to your computer, and that any disk-related hardware configuration is correct. This may involve running a manufacturer-supplied diagnostic or setup program.

Setup cannot continue. To quit Setup, press F3"

(Note: this particular laptop comes with a HP recovery partition)

I also ran the diagnostic utility included in the system's BIOS, hard disk Self test. Results:
Quick - Pass
Comprehensive - Pass
S.M.A.R.T. - Pass

This is what was happening before this happened (this is told second-hand, I wasn't aro... Read more

hi dharamc,
Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!
Have you tried checking this issue under the BIOS mode.
Power ON the computer and start hitting F2.
If the problem is visible under BIOS, then don't mind the driver as the problem might be the GPU or the LCD screen.
to isolate the issue further you can use an external monitor.
If the problem is not visible under an external monitor, then you have a problem with the GPU
