How to revert error in getting "Command Prompt Here"

Q: How to revert error in getting "Command Prompt Here"

Hi,

I was in the process of setting up my XP Professional machine to get a "Command Prompt Here" option according the instructions in http://www.fileformat.info/tip/microsoft/cmd_prompt_here.htm

But instead of selecting "Folder" as the instructions say, I selected "File Folder" by mistake. Now whenever I double click on a folder icon in Windows Explorer, it opens a command window instead of opening the folder. I am not able to remove this action as the remove option is grayed out.

Please help.

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,

I have basic knowledge of the command terminal, in that I only know how to navigate through directories. Currently I am trying to execute the following:

java ?jar MRTBatch.jar ?d input_directory ?p parameter_directory\input_parameter_file ?o parameter_file_directory

I have already navigated to the correct directory to make use of the MRTBatch.jar tool, however the problem arises with my user inputs, which are of the form "C:\Users\My Name\Rest of path". I keep getting the error:

ERROR: Could not find directory "C:\Users\My Name".

When navigating directories earlier I always had to go find the file I wanted, copy its path location, paste it into the command terminal, and then erase the "C:\" portion (so it became cd\Users\My Name\Rest of path) for it to work. So when I got this error I have tried multiple edits for it to recognize the paths. Could it be as simple as switching the direction of the slashes? I would have thought the complete path name would always be best. Is it because I'm already burrowed down so far that it cant seem to recognize any file further back?

Here are the directions I am following, pg 40 titles "Automated Batch Processing": https://lpdaac.usgs.gov/sites/default/files/public/mrt41_usermanual_032811.pdf
My goal is to mosaic a bunch of satellite imagery using the MODIS Reprojection Tool (MRT).

Thank you for the help!

Your problem just may be that it needs to start from the root of the drive or C:\. If it starts at the standard Command Prompt it will already be looking below/inside C:\Users\your name\.

It seems that other than the 'dir' command, every command I run from my dos prompt, I get an "Access is denied." message.  Example:
C:\Users\aagha>ipconfig
Access is denied.

I've checked my UAC settings and made sure they're set to "Never Notify".

I've also tried to run sfc.exe, but can't:
C:\Users\aagha>sfc.exe
Access is denied.

Finally, I've tried to run cmd.exe as administrator, but no luck.
The one thing I've noticed is that if I go to cmd.exe's Properties and then the Security tab, I see that TrustedInstaller has Full control, but SYSTEM, Administrators and Users have only:

Read & execute andRead
I've tried to change permissions by editing, but when I do so, I get an "Access is denied" message.
I've run out of ideas on what else to try and would appreciate the help.

Hi,

After booting up my laptop (Dell studio 7 running Windows 7 Premium 64) today, two strange "Command Prompt Error" message appeared. They had something like "Hidden Startup" as the window title (I might not have remembered this completely accurately as I didn't think to take a screenshot or save them at the time).
I haven't seen these messages before, and since rebooting they haven't returned.
Is there a way of viewing them again so I can work out what they are and what might have caused them to appear? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hello Everybody!

I don't know if this is a real issue, or just one of those "What the . . . .!!" situations. You judge.

Situation:
I was working on a batch file that combines two .txt (ASCII?) files created in Notepad to create a composite file, and I noticed something really interesting. (And yes, when someone talks about doing something and the result is "really interesting", it's time to duck and hunt cover! )

Viz.:
Assume that there are two text files: "This.txt" and "That.txt", and they contain the text "This[cr-lf]" and "That[cr-lf]", where [cr-lf] is used to indicate a newline generated by hitting the "Enter/Return" key on the keyboard.

If you look at the files with a hex editor, what you see is something like this:
The file "This.txt" contains the text "This" followed by 0x0D0A, which are the ascii codes for CR and LF.
The file "That.txt" contains the text "That" followed by the same CR and LF characters.
Note that these two files contain nothing else.

Issue I discovered:
When I execute the command copy /y ".\This.txt"+".\That.txt" ".\This&That.txt", I do not get the simple concatenation of the two files, which is what I would expect. Instead I get the two files concatenated, (including the trailing CR/LF's as I would expect), but also one additional character, the hex character for a right-arrow symbol - 0x1A. In e... Read more

In Windows 7, whenever I try to select "Open file location" from the right click menu of a shortcut, instead of opening the folder in explorer, it opens a command prompt window with the directory set to file location instead. Hey guys,

I know there's a way to add a "Open command window here" when you click ON a folder... but what I'm curious about is if there's a way to do that if you're IN a folder. It never made sense to me, if I want to run a command-line utility like ffmpeg on a file, to have to go up a folder, click that option, then enter the folder again.

Does anybody know if there can be an option like this? To clarify:
This is what I'm referring to. I know MS Office Groove added an option there, so theoretically couldn't there also be one for command prompt? I know if you right-click on the desktop while holding Shift, the option shows up, but ONLY on the desktop.

Any answers would be appreciated.

A:Adding "Open Command Prompt" Option

Hotkeys

PromptHere

It doesn't use the context menu. It's a hotkey.
If you hit the hotkey while you are in a folder with nothing selected, it uses a macro to go up, get the current folder, then go back where you were and open a command prompt. It has to macro up to get the current folder using the clipboard.

Also unlike other Command Prompt Here type utilities, you can select several folders and hit the hotkey. A prompt will open with each as the current directory.
IOW, if you had 3 folders selected you'd get 3 command prompts.

It's free for you to use at your own risk.

Some how I've got my registry messed up. Now when I do 'Start' -> 'Run...' and enter 'C:\' instead of opening windows explorer at the C:\ drive it opens a DOS prompt at the that C:\ drive. I know this must be causeed by the 'DosHere' option over riding standard behavior, however if at Start' -> 'Run...' I enter a drive letter and a path like 'C:\code' then it does correctly open windows explorer at that location.

Not a huge issue but I'd like to get it back to working as before.

I feel like it might be related to this registry key section: HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell

Thanks,
Neal

A:Start -> Run... "C:\" opening a Command prompt

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Drive\shell\find\command
Should be:
%SystemRoot%\Explorer.exe

Not sure if that's it though

Edit:

I've changed my mind. Pretty sure it's here:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\App Paths
Look for an entry called cmdc and remove it (probably right click ->Export first, as a backup)

Then try Start->Run-> C: again

Hello

I understand what the %path% and %pathext% variables are.

typing: "notepad" or "calc" in the command prompt from any directory will open notepad.exe and calc.exe because their directories are in %path% and ".exe" is in %pathext%.

On the other hand "wordpad.exe" and "chrome.exe are not in %path% so typing "wordpad" or "chrome" from a random directory doesn't work.

however, typing "start wordpad" or "start chrome" does work. How come? How does the start command know where to find the executables?

Thanks in advance!

Are you saying that when you do this:

start > run > cmd

The command prompt does not open.

If that is the case, your path variable is screwed up. You can change that in your system properties, in the advanced tab.

But anyway I cannot do a System File Check and yes I did log in as administrator

A:Command Prompt "not right"!

You need a space between the command and the switch:
SFC /SCANNOW.

And you are right, the Prompt should read C:\Windows\System32 in an Admin Command Prompt.
Type cmd in the search box, then right click cmd.exe when it appears in the list, and choose Run as Administrator

And then i restarted the pc.

Thanks to the marked solution from the site below, I was able to get things working again.
Windows 7 - Cannot run multiple instances of excel using option

The site says to check the DDE option in Excel first. I found that it doesn't matter whether you do this or not. Having the box checked or unchecked appears to have no effect on anything for me. (I ended up leaving it unchecked because that appears to be the consensus of the state it "should" be in on most sites I found)

So the solution for me ended up being sort of a combination of two of the methods I had tried before:
In the registry editor (win+r then type regedit) go to the following location:
HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\Excel.Sheet.12\shell\OpenBackup before you change by right clicking on "Open" and selecting "export"Either delete or rename "ddeexec"
(renaming to ddeexecOLD or ddeexecBAK helps you remember that you changed something in the registry if you ever have to come back to this location again)Select "command" then modify the "(Default)" entry by replacing /dde at the end of the string with "%1" (with the quotes and a space before the "%1").
Changing /dde to /e appears to have no effect, all that was needed was the "%1" at the end. Repeat the above process replacing Excel.Sheet.12 with any/all of the following that are applicable to you:

It may be that you do not have any blank cells in column A, or that the whole of column A is blank.

Can you explain more.

Hi,

I am using Windows 7. I'm getting a "there was problem sending a command to the program" error in Firefox 3.6. It stays for a few second then the error msg disappears. I thought updating it would fix the problem, it hasn't. I get this error not when I open the main Firefox.exe module but when I open the shortcuts I have to certain sites on my desktop, like mail, mapquest, telephone, Google, etc. I have replaced the shortcuts but no joy.

What should I do? I tried contacting Mozilla Ezine about this but I couldn't log in.

Hello again with another unique problem, Microsoft Office 2007 was re-installed in May. I had recently installed another Hard Drive, & moved all documents, picture, & music file's to the D: Drive, leaving the C: Drive with the Win 7, downloads, & program files. Now I find I can't open an older document file with word. I get there error "There was a problem sending the command to the program" in Windows 10.

A blank word page opens, but does not display the document I selected. I must then select the "open" option, after clicking the "Home" button and search for the document I needed. Then that document opens.

I'm thinking since Office lives on the C: Drive and my documents are on the D: Drive that may be where the problem is.

If so how do fix this? Please with any replies be detailed, as I have history of being my own worst enemy with trying to fix things.

Thanks
DP

A:Word error " There was a problem sending the command to the program"

My wife seems to be having a similar problem with Word in Office 2003. She can only open documents by opening Word first. I have the same software and I also run Windows 10, but I do not have the problem.

If you sorted it I would love to see your solution.

I first noticed this last night when I attempted to install and run Maple Story, a Nexon game that a friend wants me to try and play. When I downloaded and installed the game, I double clicked the shortcut from the desktop but this window popped up. I brushed it off and closed my laptop for the night. Today when I went to check my email through Yahoo! Messenger's email button I had the same problem. A window popped up saying "There was an error sending the command to the program".
Is this a potential virus, or is there a solution to this problem?

Hello One time only and welcome to Seven Forums.

Check and see if your default browser was changed to something else. If it was it could be the result of malware on your machine.

FIX: There was a problem sending the command to the program on Windows 7

However, another Seven Forums member had a similar problem that was solved by creating a new shortcut. (This was using Firefox.)

Hi everyone,

I'm running vista sp1 with IE7, and I recently installed Google Chrome.

Now whenever I try to run IE it crashes with "The RunAs Command is not supported". I'm not trying to run under different credentials - this happens on a simple click on the shortcut, also with start/run/iexplore. I uninstalled chrome - the problem remains.

I can right-click and run as administrator - then it wants a confirmation to authorise the promotion. I normally use firefox, but my users want IE

Should I try a system restore? Is there anything else I can investigate? Any help would be most appreciated.

Hi,
I'm trying to run mklink command, but receive an error:
C:\Windows\system32>mklink /J "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data" "d:\temp\User Data"
The syntax of the command is incorrect.
Trying this way doesn't help too:
C:\Windows\system32>mklink /J "C:\Users\[name]\AppData\Local\Google\Chrome\User Data d:\temp\User Data"
The syntax of the command is incorrect.
Any ideas?

A:mklink error "The syntax of the command is incorrect"

Hi,
The original location was deleted before the command execution, so the problem wasn't in it. But, anyway, today I've tried the same command and it run successfully, do not know why :). Maybe some background app was using this dirs (Chrome was closed) and
the computer needed a reboot to release them.

I'm trying to send a message to another computer over network by using msg command. Both computers are using Win 7 Ultimate and are in same workgroup. I can send messages to myself just fine, but I get "Error 1825 getting session names" when I
try to send a message to that (or any other) computer.
So far I've tried:
-known solution to Error 5 (setting AllowRemoteRPC to 1 in registry)
-turning off firewall
-starting any service that has something to do with remote connection
-fixing WMI ports and port-forwarding them. Don't know if I succeeded and if it's even relevant, but I came across this when searching for solution to error 1825
I have a feeling it has something to do with router. I replaced original firmware with Tomato (v1.27) because of "quality of service". Router model is Linksys WRT54G/GS/GL. Any settings I should look for?
What else can I try to do? Error 1825 translates to "A security package specific error occurred. " - what exactly does this mean? Also, what are requirement for msg
command to work, apart from 2 or more computers, router and same workgroup?

Thanks in advance!

UPDATE: I created a homegroup, and while both computers are joined, msg command gives me error 5 instead of 1825. As I said, I already applied known fix for error 5, so it must be something else. Also, homegroup doesn't work as it should, computers don't
detect each other and I do share libraries.

Hello and thank you for reading my post.

If I'm logged in Windows as user "u1", I can execute "cmd.exe" "as administrator" by choosing

Code:
"Start" -> "cmd.exe" and right-click "Run as administrator".
I would like to start another "cmd.exe" console as "u2" and "as administrator".
(So, "u2" is not the current logged in user).

The following command:

Code:
u1 cmd.exe> runas /user:u2 "cmd.exe"
runs "cmd.exe" as "u2" but not "as administrator".

I would like to do this in command line. Can you tell me how?

Best regards.

Nota:
u1 cmd.exe> means: I'm running "cmd.exe" as "u1".

A:Run "cmd.exe" as a given user and "as administrator" in command line

Hi Lea,

I don't believe that what you want to accomplish is possible. This is because Windows only "runs" one login at a time, unlike some true multi user operating systems, such as Linux.

If your logged in as U1, then you can only perform operations as U1, or as the Administrator. As far as running things as the Administrator is concerned, I believe in this case that you simply inherit the Administrators permission levels, thus permitting you to perform elevated activities.

If your U1 login has Administrator privileges then running as Administrator will be no different to running as U1!

Good luck

So I've tried to get the game Battlefield 2 working on my PC, every time I tried to launch the game the computer crashed or I get a blue screen.
I checked the Support folder in the game files and ran the systems check program, and apparently my CPU speed was too low to run the game, which was 1,5GHz when the game only supports 1,7GHz, but how is this when I got a 2,27GHz processor?
To resolve the issue I downloaded a program called SpeedSwitchXP which supposively is going to resolve the problem. I set the program to Max Preformance - run the Battlefield 2 systems check again, and my CPU speed is bumped up to ~2,2GHz like it's supposed to be. "Now the game sould run properly, I think!"

I start up the game, the screen turns black and shortly after I get a bluescreen again, just like before. Only this time it doesn't do a physical memory dump.
The error code I got was: Stop: 0x0000007F (0x00000008,0xF7717D70,0x00000000,0x00000000)
So I'm stuck at the bluescreen and got nothing else to do but restarting the computer manually.
When I start up the computer and logg onto my user the computer completley freezes after like 5 seconds on the desktop. When I run the computer on 'Last working settings' I get the same result. However I can run the computer in 'Safe Mode'. And here's the funny thing: I can run the computer on different computer users without the crash ever happening!

A:PC crashing to "Stop: 0x0000007F", suspecting CPU over clocking, how to revert this?

Wow.

Okay, first I think your account is screwed-up. I'd start a new User account for troubleshooting/testing purposes.

Second, I don't think there is a problem with your CPU speed and the game. It sounds like there is a problem with the game and maybe there is a patch?

The CPU speed simulator thing sounds really weird and scammy, and I'd be inclined to blame it. Also, since your account is messed up and the other one is not, you may have had some System File damage due to malware, power, heat, hard drive errors or other causes. How the game acts on a brand-new account will be interesting.

Is the game legit, or cracked? If it's cracked, that may be the reason why it's running buggy.

I am back home for the holidays and brought my desktop back with me that runs Windows 7. After I got it all set up I realized I could not access the internet, and that I was connected to an "Unidentified Network". After looking into it more I found that I was getting a 169.XXX.XX.XX IP, and I was unable to renew it. After searching the internet for a while I found many people with similar problems and tried many things that were suggested such as

"Clean Boot", by making sure that Norton and Bonjour, which apparently can cause these problems, were disabled at startup
Updating the Drivers on my network adapter
Reinstall the network adapter
Reset the router and modem
switched out ethernet cables
Set my own IP
Tried to do a system restore (whole restore failed, tried to update then lost all my past restore points)
Tried starting in safe mode and safe mode with networking, neither worked.
and finally restoring my computer to factory settings (Windows Vista), which I thought would fix it but did not, leaving me with very little hope.

Nothing really changed between it working and not working, and all the other computers on the network still work.

I have what I consider slightly above average understanding on the software side of things, and limited when it comes to hardware. So I'll probably need an explanation of what to do. This computer is barely two years old.

HELP!

Do you have a recovery restore install disc or partition?
You can try doing a repair or system file check...
Scan For Missing/Corrupt System Files...

Windows XP comes with a wonderful tool called System File Checker (SFC)
Itscans and verifies the versions of all protected system files after you restart your computer...
To Do This:
Click Start menu, and then click the Run icon.
In the small box that Opens, type the three letters: cmd then click the OK button.
In the command prompt window that just opened (a black background and white text), type the following command:
SFC /scannow
And then click OK
You must be logged on as a member of the Administrators group to run SFC..
You will need your Windows XP CD during this procedure if SFC needs to get an original file. Please remember that Windows XP can have multiple instances of a .DLL file and remember which version is for which program.
Notes....
I have been asked if it is possible to have a "progress meter" show when SFC runs... This is the registry hack you need. PLEASE do not go messing with your registry if you do NOT know what you are doing!
System Key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon]
Value Name: SFCShowProgress
Data Type: REG_DWORD (DWORD Value)
Value Data: (0 = disabled, 1 = enabled)

Guys,

I have a little problem and I need ur help. Here's the thing: Few days ago I've tried to re-install Win XP at my friends computer (updated Xp from May 2013 with some optional tools etc.) but the installation itself failed and showed me an error saying "Setup is being restarted" and then reboots computer... Never mind on that, I managed to get in XP somehow again, got win 7 32-bit, installed it, updated few times, "salvaged" all programs and games that were working from XP and everything went fine from that moment. Then I told my friend: "When you turn him on, you will come up with 2 choices > 1. Win 7 OS, and 2. Win XP setup(bugged), and told him to choose win 7"...but what happened next day is that his younger brother didn't know that, and he left windows to automatically choose for him and it turns out that after 30 sec boot chose the setup, and that messed up the THING. And now basically, when I turn on his computer to check, there's no more win 7 OS among the choices, only bugged XP setup... I don't know how to revert back that option so I(he) can get in win 7 OS again..(win can't be deleted, right?!)

Sorry for a bit longer post, you will understand my confusion
