Power Turns Off Then On Again

Q: Power Turns Off Then On Again

Hello, and thank you to anyone who is reading this for your consideration. I have had a problem with my computer powering down and then restarting again. It did this 3 times before I swapped the power supply, thinking that was the culprit. However, it just did that again with the new power supply. My computer is, of course, not one with an 'off' switch, so it basically goes into standby when you turn it off. Could this be a faulty power button? Here are the specifications:

Preferred Solution: Power Turns Off Then On Again

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everybody!
I have a Dell Inspiron 3847 with an i5 4440, 8 gb of ram, and 1 tb of hard drive. I purchased an evga 500 watt PSU and successfully installed it. My pc worked normally and everything was fine. I then purchased an evga 1060 sc and attempted at installing it into my pc. After installing it I started up my pc and it turned on. The fan for the gpu didn?t spin so I turned off my computer, opened the case, unplugged the 6 pin then plugged it back in. I turned on my pc again but it made an odd sound before the power button flashing orange then completely shutting off. Now every time I turn it on the light turns orange and the fans spin for a split second then they stop. Any assistance will be much appreciated...

When I attempt to turn on my computer the power light comes on and I hear the fans running but after a second or 2 the light goes off and the fans stop running, after a count of 2 the light comes on the fans start up again and the same thing happens again, on off on off I don?t have to touch the button the only way I get it to stop is pull the plug from the wall. I thought maybe it was a power supply issue so I replaced this with a new one but I got the same results. Does anyone have an ideas????

A:Computer power issues ! turns on then off turns on then off ...

Dear Customer, Welcome to the HP Consumer Support forum. In order to isolate the issue, please try and perform few basic steps as follows: 1. Open the hood and ensure the 4 or 6-wire power supply cable is seated into the connector on the system board2. Check if a device is causing the problem by removing ALL attached devices (such as hard, diskette, or optical drives, and expansion cards).3. Power on the system.4. If the system enters the POST, then power off and replace one device at a time and repeat this procedure until failure occurs.5. Replace the device that is causing the failure.6. Continue adding devices one at a time to ensure all devices are functioning properly.7. Locate the header and jumper labeled CLR_CMOS8. Remove the jumper from pins 2 and 3.9. Place the jumper on pins 1 or 2.10. Put the jumper back on pins 2 or 311. Replace the access panel12. Reconnect all the disconnected devices one by one and then power on the unit and check if the issue persists. In case issue persists please get back to us and we would be glad to assist you. Hope this helps, for any further queries reply to the post and feel free to join us again. **Click the KUDOS star on left to say Thanks** Make it easier for other people to find solutions by marking a Reply 'Accept as Solution' if it solves your problem. Thank You,GR1Although I am an HP employee, I am speaking for myself and not for HP

Well, first of all, are you sure it is a standard ATX? Some PBells didn't use standard wiring.

When you push power, you don't get lights, or fans spinning?

The power LED shouldn't turn on when battery is inserted.
Please update the BIOS from our support.euro.dell.com --enter the tag#--submit--select drivers and downloads--choose the operating system and install the BIOS from the list.

My computer regularly turns off all by itself. It could be anywhere from 3 miniutes to 3-4 hours for it to turn off by itself. When I unplug the computer power cord and plug it in again then the power turns on again but usually turns off again after a while. Why does my computer turn off by itself and how can I resolve this problem?

A:Power on computer turns off by itself very often

This could be caused by a component of your computer heating up and telling the computer to shut down to prevent over heating. Make sure the computer is clean on the inside first and foremost! I suggest finding a temperature monitoring program like MBM5 or speed fan so you can tell just how hot things are getting. Hope that helps! Give it a shot and tell us the results.

My computer has been running amazingly untill about a week ago it started shutting off right in the middle of operation. When I would boot it back up Microsoft would do the "Send error report" thing and it would send me to a web page saying that it was a hardware problem but it didn't know what hardwear was failing. It gave me a list of possible:
If overclocking turn off (Which I was and did disable)
Check Prossesor (My AMD 64 X2 +4200 is brand new and appears to be working fine)
Over packed power strip (Not a problem)
And Power supply. ( I think this is the most likly but have no way of proving it. I'm running 4 Hard drives. 1 Floppy. 2 CD drives. PCIe graphics card. 2 180mm fans and 1 80mm. all on a 450w power supply. Is that too much for it to handle? and Yes it's all nessisary.)

A:Computer turns off as if power went out.

It also can depend on the quality of the power supply. A cheap PSU will say 450 W but this is a peak value, and is an unrealistic dream. If it is a name brand or one of high quality it will put out a constant 450w. Check the label on the PSU to see if it is 450 Peak power, or 450 Constant. If it is peak, I would be looking into getting a more powerful PSU. I personally like to buy quality PSUs. I have a Cooler Master True 550w and it has never given me a problem.

Hello, my E5-511 screen crashes every time i power on the first time. The acer logo appears, then the screen goes black but the computer is still going. I have to hold the power button to turn it off and then turn it back on again to get it to work. I did a power drain (removed the battery and held the power button for 15 seconds to remove all stored power) and then it worked properly for about 36 hours and then right back to this same problem. As well, it never sleeps, it just shuts down all the time and then i have to go through this nonsense to get it powered on again.has anyone ever experienced anything like this before? thanks!!

A:Power on computer turns off by itself

A few initial thoughts.

- How old is the PC? If it isn't that new have you ever cleaned it out inside?

It could be a heat related issue although I would of thought you would get a warning before shutdown (although not always). If the temperature reaches or exceeds the temperature set in the BIOS the system will shutdown to protect itself.

- If it runs for a while, then shuts off. When you turn it back on does it normally shutdown again after a very short time? Or can it run for ages again before turning off?

I just built a new i3 SB machine with a gigabit board. It was working fine for 3 dys put win 7 on it, but now all of a sudden it just shuts off as soon as i press the power button.

I took the board out and looked at it and i powered it on outside the case but it still does it. Everything looks kosher to me.

A:New PC build turns off within a sec of power on

Could be a few issues, maybe the power button is getting stuck in and just powering down the machine.
Mobo or PSU might be defective.
What I would do is unplug all hardware and just use the bare minimum and see if it still powers down.

Hi,
Wondering if someone could shine a little light my way. My boyfriend has an emachine desktop W4682 and just tonight it has started giving me two problems.
First when turning on the pc the power light turns on and stays on, you can hear the fan humming but nothing else happens... no signal to the monitor. Something that I noticed was that the light for the dvd+-rw drive stayed on too. Thinking that maybe the dvd drive might be the problem, I opened the tower and disconnected the dvd drive. So far so good. The pc turned on and booted completely. After a couple of minutes of using the pc I started getting an error that said "power surge on hub port" and all I could do (after reading a few posts here and there) is turn off the usb alert on the advanced options.
For now I am able to use the pc but I'm worried that I might be causing it some permanent damage by leaving it as is. Best idea yet is to buy a better power supply? Anybody got a better one?

*Not expecting miracles here. I know of the little potential the emachines have*

A:Power light turns on but nothing else happens

G'day Myzteryh, these kinds of problems present difficult answers, quite obviously there is a malfunction of some type but what is the best course of action.
It is possible that some kind of malfunction has happened within the DVD combo or some other problem has affected the DVD combo but not knowing becomes difficult. The usb indication also is a consideration.
You could take it to a shop but they probably would not do more than what I am about to suggest.
It would probably be pertinent to obtain "Everest Home" off the net, (google it, Lavalys) this is an analysis program that can be helpful, remove any unneccessary USB stuff, load the Everest program, if you are able to, open it, then open the computer icon in it, then open the sensors section. This will show voltages and temperatures within the machine. If you could somehow copy and paste that page here would be nice, reallly what we are most interested in is the voltage readings, you can expect the table to show suggested readings on the left and actual readings on the right. I do feel you may find some way to achieve this without much problem and we may be able to work out what may be happening.
Do not leave the machine running for any period longer than neccessary at this time. (give it some thought)
If any of the twelve volt readings are above 14 Volts just switch it off and replace the power unit without any further testing.
There may be other ideas on how to address this problem.

Cheers, qldit.

Dust it out. Take some canned air and dust all intake and exhaust ports on the laptop. Heat is the #1 cause of laptops shutting down at seemingly random times.

Hi! Yesterday, I turned my PC on from 1:00PM to 12:00AM. After that, I turned it on at 7:30AM, and after 4-5 hours of working, it turned itself off (directly, but the green LED on the case was still lighting until I kept my finger pressing on the Power button. Then the light was gone). After that, I opened it again, but after about 3 hours of continuous working, it stopped in the same way as before - with the green LED lighting. I left it for a couple of hours. Then turned it on again, but this time, after an hour of working, it stopped!
For knowledge, I faced this problem months ago, when I used to turn it on for 10 hours daily (for about a month)!
PLEASE!!! HELP ME!

A:My PC Turns Itself off With the Green Power LED Lighting!!!!

An intermittent power issue? I would be inclined to suspect the power supply or motherboard being at fault, but it really could be a multitude of different things. First of all I would check to make sure all of the cables are properly secured. Also make sure your computer and display are plugged into a surge protector, this is important. If you know what your looking for open up the case and make sure that the ATX power plugs are secured properly and that there isn't too much dust in there, especially inside the heatsinks.

Do you get any kind of errors or slowdown in Windows before the computer crashes?

Hello,

I'm new here and have a problem with my laptop. It's a fairly old vaio about 2-3 years. It recently started to turn off randomly, no warnings, not even a BSOD. I have searched and non of the other computer shutting down problems have the same symptoms.

Let me explain. When plugged into the wall via the AC power adapter, when idling or waiting for games to load etc. it may choose to shut down unexpectedly. Now I've been having this problem for a couple of weeks now and when it's running on the battery, it's fine, it can run till the battery is empty without shutting down, this is bout 1 hour and 30 mins. If it was connected to the power adapter, it would certainly shut down much earlier than this.

Heres the weird bit. When connected to the wall via the AC power adapter, it will NOT shut down if a 3D application is running, this includes playing games. When there is nothing 3D to render, such as when games are loading or it is idling on the desktop, it will certainly shut down, randomly. Another thing is that it will also NOT shut down if running in safe mode. I have left it on safe mode for about 5 hours for a test and no shut downs. Only when in normal mode it will. I have also left a game running for around that long in normal mode and no shut downs. Now to prevent my computer from random shut downs when I am using it, I continuously run a 3D modeling program in the background. This defineately works as I have left my computer running for days like this and n... Read more

I'm just wondering if this is something quite basic. Please try the following:

Remove the Power Adaptor
Remove the Battery
Remove any other external devices (ie USB devices)
Hold down the ON button for 30 seconds
Then put the Power Adaptor in ONLY

Turn on the computer

My roommate tried to "fix" his PC but god knows he doesn't know crap. The PC acts like it is going to turn on, but the light on the front of the tower does not light up, nor does the display. The light on the motherboard is solid green, and he is still able to charge a phone through the PC, so I'm guessing the power supply is good if it can do all of this. At this point I am at a loss because I'm normally very good with this stuff, any suggestions? and I don't believe it's the video card.

i have a 3 year old xps l502x. Last night I was working on it and I had turned battery charging off even though it was connected to the adapter. A friend of mine removed it and worked on it for a while. When I took it from him it was showing about 20% battery. I plugged it in and turned the charging on, as soon as i unselected stop charging battery,, the laptop turned off and the led on the charger also did the same. I trieed to turn it on again but it just wont do it, the charger is fine, i used other chargers, with the battery without the battery everything but the problem persists. Is the motherboard fried? I didn't smell any burning. My lappy isn't under warranty what should i do? Can the data be saved?

Learn How to Post and More. I have read your post on how your desktop computer's light on the power adapter shut off. Is the desktop not able to power on? Does the adapter work if plugged into another outlet? Does the adapter light come on if it is plugged directly into a wall outlet? Please re-post with the necessary information, this way I will be able to research this further for you. I have an Averatec 3200 series laptop that has XP home edition,512MB DDR, 80GB HDD,AMD Athlon 2200+, when I turn the power on the blue power light comes on and i can hear the fan run but there is a series of three beeps and then silence and then keeps repeating the sequence of beeps until i just turn it off but the screen never lights up or comes on.
The last time that the laptop was on and working, while i was in the middle of an application, the screen had lines running across the screen (up & down) and the whole thing froze up and when i turned it off and then back on this is the problem i was having. Is there anything i can do to salvage this laptop or is gone? Thanks to anyone who can help me!!!

A:laptop power turns on but screen doesnt

Sounds like the laptop is not able to do the POST successfully. Try removing everything non-essential from the laptop (hard drive, optical drive, graphics card if it is not soldered onto the motherboard, etc.) and try powering it on. If that succeeds, add the additional components to the computer one by one until you isolate the one causing the POST to fail.

Hi,

I have a Dell Inspiron 530 (desktop) with Vista Home Premium. Until the other day, when I pushed the power button to start the PC, it turned blue and the PC went through the boot-up process. Now, it turns yellow and nothing happens unless I do more. So I push and hold the power button until it turns off. Then, I push the button a bit more strongly and it turns blue and boots.

My first thought was that the power switch for this 2008 PC is getting old and that I may become unable to boot at all. So I have decided to just let it go into sleep mode for now rather than turning it off for the day.

Any ideas on solving the yellow light issue?

A:Power button turns yellow instead of blue

It's an error indicator (not a failing switch).

Depending on the model, there may be other error indicators as well. In any case, q quick search found this: Inspiron 530 steady amber power light. - General Hardware - Desktop - Dell Community

When I turn on my computer, a blank blue screen comes up and remains.  The startup sequence does not initiate and the computer will turn off after a minute or so.  Hitting the esc key after power-on gets me to the "Choose an Option" page.  From "Advanced Options", I have tried "System Restore" and "Startup Repair" neither fixed the problem.  Unable to boot in safe mode or change any of the startup settings because the system startup (restart) sequence is broken. A hard system reset did not work and pushing the F2 Key does not bring up the sys diag page. At this point, it seems that the only options left are trying to boot from a USB device or doing a PC Reset (keep my files)? Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks

To be clear, my PC turns on and seems to run exactly as it should, so this is possibly more of a cosmetic/superficial issue. The little light located on the power button no longer lights up when the PC is powered on. Strangely, the light still blinks on and off as it should when the PC is in sleep mode, so the light still has some functionality. My PC is only a couple of months old, so I'm just a little concerned that this could be a sign of things to come. I hope that other components don't start failing on me.Does anyone here have any possible explanations? Thanks.

My IdeaPad just suddenly turned off while I was playing a game. AC adapter was plugged in is so I guess battery is fully charded.  When I press power button, the power led lights up. It doesn't blink or anything. It lights constantly. But nothing else happens. No sound or anything.  When I press and hold the power button the led turns off after a few seconds.  When I connect ac adaptor the ac led turns on (white). It doesn't blink or anything. I guess it means that the battery is full.  I've tried to hold the power button for a few seconds (as a lot of people suggest here) but it doesn't change a thing.  Please help me. This laptop is 8 months old. The battery is non removable.

Good day, So I can keep trying to turn it on and it does the same thing everytime. Lights turn on, battery light turns on orange, not once but twice. AC comes on green and then orange.. However it may be orange because of the battery light illuminating it and it could be un lite. Fans or hardrive seem to fire up in this short time. The battery is connected and AC is plugged in as the battery doesnt last long so I mostly only use it with AC. The screen doesnt flinch in this time. Had no problems previously. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks,Jesse

Hi Jesse, Welcome to the community. Sounds like a motherboard failure. Unfortunately you will need a new motherboard. Vince.

Basically what the title says. I have my power options for my monitor timeout set to never turn off. It's a desktop, and I think I can trace the problem to a certain program. I have Arcsoft Totalmedia Theatre installed for playing BluRay movies and when I run it, it changes the display options back to Windows Vista Basic. It would seem that the power option changes itself back after I close this program and Vista goes back to Aero mode.

Any ideas what I could do to fix this? I use the program a lot and I absolutely hate turning my monitors back on.

A:Vista turns off monitor even though power options are set to never

I would remove Arcsoft Total media Theatre, then reset Vista, defragment, and reboot, then reinstall ArcSoft TotalMedia Theatre, and see if it will behave next time.
