main board problem

Q: main board problem

my main board wont load when powered. when i apply power, the keyboard lights, and the CPU/sink fan starts, but the monitor does not reflect any activity. i pused the num lock key, to see if that would work, but it didn't respond.

the board is a "PC100 Systemboard, Slot 1/socket 370". the processoer is a pentium celeron.

so far, i have:

changed memory, changed CPU, checked and confirmed jumper settings, replaced the bios battery, replaced the BIOS chip itself, swaped power supplies, striped periphials, and even changed the system speaker to see if there was an "error beep" i was missing.

the results:

the VGA "card" is onboard, with a ribbon cable "dongle"

i think that somthing is bad in the electronics of the board itself.

the system was functional before, then i put it aside, while i worked with another machine. now it just "doesn't work".

if anyone has sugguestions (can't spell that word), or knows how to check the board itself, let me know.

my email is:

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello everyone, 1st in here,
My ECS K7S5A mobo gave me lots of problems 8 months after I bought the base unit, i can't return the base unit to the company I bought it from as the company went bust however, I have bought a new motherboard, an MSI KTA (MS-6590) to be precise. The CPU which is on the K7S5A is an AMDXP 2000, the ram is 184 pin pc2100 DDR, Ge force 4 440MX, HDD is barracuda 80g with CD writer and DVD drive and 1.44 floppy. What I want to know if anyone will be so kind enough to help me is, will all the components out of the K7S5A go right into the MSI KT4????, I am mainly bothered what I need to do to fit the CPU properly as I have looked on the MSI web site and the other stuff "should" go in ok!
Any help will be gratefully excpeted,
Liza and thanks!

Hi everyone.

It's been a while since my last visit. I hope your all doing good!

I would like to ask for some advice regarding a Pavilion Slimline S3435uk.

The unit will power on but there is no display. None of the front LED's light up and I get no BIOS error beeps.
(The main board does not appear to have a speaker).

The PSU LED does light up and if a HDD is connected it spins up.

I have also disconnected every PCI card and all other components including the DIMM's from main board except the CPU its self and the PSU cable. I still get no front LED activity.

I have tried using both the on board Video and a PCI video card together and independently

I have also tried each DIMM on their own and independently.

No matter what combination of components used or not used I still get no LED's, no BIOS beeps and no display. (The display unit is a good working unit).

I have had systems with dead CPU's before and those times the CPU's did not get warm. As the CPU is getting warm to the touch and getting hotter when left on for longer, am I correct to assume that the fault is with the main board? Or does the fact that the CPU is getting hot not necessarily mean that the CPU is working?

I think it would be worth replacing the main board or the CPU but do not think that it is cost effective to replace both.

I'd really appreciate any help you guys/gals can give.
Many thanks in advance.

I bought a main board tester from www.stw.hk
I would like to use it but do not know how to read
the results. I contacted the company direct but they
are a chinese company and not sure they can understand
what I am saying. Hoping someone has the codes for the
device. I have enclosed a pic of the device.

A:How do I use my new main board tester STW

I think I am correct in saying that the average cost is about 4 UK GBP
If the computer on which you intend to use it is by any chance your dell dimension 4600
see this
http://downloads.dell.com/manuals/all-products/esuprt_desktop/esuprt_dimension_desktops/dimension-4600_service manual_en-us.pdf
it lists the beep codes and the leds - faults
see pages 2, 3 and 4

I would think that such a cheap tester can only display the BIOS error codes and the led fault codes
I VERY MUCH doubt it is capable of generating any of its own error codes

You are very unlikely to have anyone answer who can supply the devices OWN error codes if they exist

Surely however Chinese the English user guide, it must offer some explanation of what codes it displays
If not perhaps an email in Chinese using an online translator may assist
"what codes does the motherboard tester display please"

In simplified Chinese

I bought my X1E in December, 2018. I have had various "issues" that are random. The most notable is a complete freeze of the Windows 10 desktop (no black screen) requiring a hard shutdown via the power button. My X1E is up to date on all Lenovo software and drivers. Given all the various drivers and other components running as services, I can rationalize my problem as a software glitch that may be fixed by an updated driver. However the chance of a bad batch of main boards is also a very real possibility. My question is would anyone who had a main board replaced and it solved their problem please tell me and the forum the problem that prompted the main board replacement. And did the new board work perfectly. I will exclude the BIOS bricking issue at the beginning of the 2019 year. I am reluctant to send my X1E in to service if there is not a consensus of a bad batch of main boards. But these random crashes are driving me crazy and costing me valuable work.

Hello all, Excuse me while I vent for a while here, before asking my questions. Warning - vent starting below: So, my ststem refused to start one day a few months ago. I think I was waking it up from being in sleep mode. Note that my system was out of warranty at this point. So I searched around the internet, but did not find too many solutinos that did not involve opening the bottom cover of the machine. So, eventually I chatted with Lenovo tech support who mentioned that it sounded like a dead system board. So, fast forward a few months, my machine has been running fine while it is on, but if I turn it off or put it in sleep or hibernation mode, it will not come back on for several hours. As of today, it has been off for about three days, so I asume that the board is finally dead. I did some searching around with new search terms and it looks like this is a very common problem fairly early in the life of the system. I tried to find out if Lenovo did a recall on this, but could not find any information, so I went to Lenovo's site to find the part number for my system board to see if the cost of it would be worth the repair. However, the site does not accept my laptop's serial number for some reason. So, I did a chat with the parts & accessories sales department. They were able to tell me that they do not have the part in stock, but do not have the part number to give me (what???). They... HelloI recently purchased a HP Spectre x360 Model: 13-4014tu. It is an i7 model with a 5500U and 8GB ram. I purchased itsecond hand and it is out of warranty. I will have to pay out of my pocket to fix it. The problem is: There was a lightning storm and the laptop was plugged into the wall socket being charged. Lightning stuck close by and my laptop turned off and will not turn back on again. I took it to a laptop repair shop to be diagnosed and they found that 6 resistors had blown and they are too tiny to solder by hand, meaning I need to replace the entire main board. I have the part number for my mainboard and it is HP part number: 801505-501. I have found a replacement on eBay and it is an entire mainboard with fan and heatsink with the same specs i7 5500U and 8gb ram and with the same part number 801505-501. The problem is that it is pulled from a 13-4003DX model spectre x360 and mine is a 13-4014tu. What would be the difference and would the mainboard from the 13-4003DX be compatable if I swapped it into my laptop? I am in Australia. The 13-4014tu could be an Australian delivered model and the 13-4003DX seems to be American. Would they just be the same model, just released in different countries? Thanks

This morning my main board would not post. Nothing at all.

I originally had the ECS P4M800PRO-M7 REV 3.1

At Fry's they had them all stacked up so as soon as I found the stack, I looked through to find one that hadn't been returned 3 or 4 times. Unfortunately, I didn't double check it. I ended up with the:

ECS P4M800PRO-M V 1.0A

I installed it anyway and it booted up with no problems. I didn't check my files.

On a subsequent restart, I noticed that the chkdsk utility that sometimes appears after an abrupt shutdown came up.

Now several folders are missing in on my nonsystem drive. This drive is a 300GB SATA150 Drive. The drive was set with a cluster size of 256KB because I was using the drive only for video content.

I've noticed that the drive shows up on the BIOs of the new system, whereas before it did not. It also shows the cluster size as 4KB.

My guess is either the bios or the installed driver didn't recognize the cluster size and ran chkdsk with a cluster size of 4.

Any suggestions on a next step? Is there any recovery software that deals well with larger cluster sizes. I ran GetDataBack and it only came up with an alternate disk structure based on a cluster size of 8KB. The disk is my only copy of several hours of video footage that I shot of execs from out of town for a business presentation video.

I have just installed a new motherboard on my F10-124.
This was the upgraded PCB P000415760 (Part number P000454980) as the graphics card failed - again!!

The documents that came with it tell me to update the Bios, EC/KBC (SVP Parameters) and write the new DMI. At the moment the VGA controller is not recognised, and no CD drive is listed.

Can this be updated by myself, without having to send it away to an ASP, as its not worth the money if I do. I just want to use this as an additonal PC for my daughter to use.

Surely I should be able to update the Bios from a download or something from the toshiba support site.

Any help appreciated.

Someone has asserted certain things to me about the BIOS setup on boards with certain hardware connected. Frankly, I have never heard of such as he told me today and of three professional techs I have talked to so far, they haven't either. I am not going to repeat what he told me because don't want a discussion of the nuances of various configurations. I just want to see if I can find anyone else who has this "common knowledge" (as he put it) that supposedly applies to all systems complying to the AT standard.

Experts only, please, need reply.

I have a mouse on com 1. I have com 2 enabled with IRQ 3 for occasional use with a digital camera. The PS2 mouse port is enabled. I also have a PCI modem on com 3, IRQ 11. There are no conflicting IRQs.

Can anyone tell me if there is some significant "common knowledge" that goes "way back" in computer setups that one should know about this setup that might cause the computer to be unusable?

If so, can I find documentation of this anywhere?

I've been working on this problem off and on for a couple of years or more. All of my recent searches for a solution have ended with just a half-hearted effort.

I have two scenarios in which I get IBD errors: One is where the main board in a 2000 or XP system fails and I have to replace the board with an IDE controller that is not similar enough to the original one. For this scenario, I still have no solution. It's still a situation where my only hope is to find a replacement board that has an IDE controller very much like the old one--or just reload the OS and all programs from scratch.

The next scenario is where we have a planned upgrade or board swap in a system that is still functional--at least functional enough to get to the GUI. Here are the steps I used that worked.

Before I removed the board from the old system, I went to Device Manager> System> IDE... I changed the controller to Standard Dual-Channel PCI IDE Controller. I then shut down, changed the board and booted. I got to the desktop and loaded the drivers for the new board, etc. and booted again. All seems to work well so far.

Now, this was only one situation and I don't know it will work in all situations; but, it is a breakthrough for me as this has been not only annoying but a time-consuming bear for a long time.

Now, if I can only find a way to do this on a system where the main board has failed before I have had a chance to change the controller driver to the generic flavor.

I ha... Read more

This is a debatable conclusion; but, I have decided what I think (from years of experience) is the most common cause of natural death in main boards ("natural" meaning things other than lightning strike, power surge, doofus fiddlings by wanna-be techs, etc.).

A friend wrote me an e-mail today about his spontaneous reboots at odd times and the fact they are getting more frequent. Rather than re-write the scenario here, I'll just cut and past my e-mail back to him
Your problem is a classic symptom of capacitor failure on the main board. This type of failure is the number-one cause of natural main board failure (natural would exclude lightning, power surges, doofus' assemblies by wanna-be techs, etc.)

You will see many cylinder-shaped capacitors soldered to your main board. They are of the cheapest and oldest technology in capacitors and they suffer from a high failure rate. There are two physical capacitor "can" manufacturing methods that result in slightly different methods of closing the top (visible-to-you) end of the capacitor. One is the "can" that has no seam on your end and one that has seams visible in the style of the Mercedes automobile logo/emblem or maybe a cross (X-style).

Determine which capacitor style you have. If it is the seamed closure, your diagnosis will be easy. The end of the capacitor should be flat and not swollen-looking. If it is swollen-looking, the capacitor has failed and is probably reached a point that i... Read more

Hi all
So far I,ve enjoyed using W7 X-64 but there's one application that consistently (and randomly) fails for what I can see is no apparent reason.

The message IE8 has unexpectedly stopped working.
You then restart IE8 and it will sometimes but not always restore your last session.

I use almost NO plugins apart from the adobe flash - this installs on the 32 bit version of IE8 but not the 64 bit version.

(You can tell if flash is working / installed or not) by simply loading the BBC's home page (BBC - Homepage) and seeing if there is a little square analog clock application running at the right hand top of the screen - this won't appear if you start the 64 bit version of IE8).

I "tolerated" the occasional failure of the pre-RTM versions of W7 but I would have expected it to be fixed in the RTM.

Handling badly written / dubious code from zillions of websites can be tough on a browser but IMO the browser should be robust enough to just ignore or issue a message when it has problems accessing a particular site.

So W7 X-64 RTM in general very positive but not too happy with some aspects of IE8.

(Firefox hasn't yet crashed on my system - but for work compatability I'm often forced to use IE8 ----- so don't reply "why not use another browser please ).

A:IE8 - my main problem with W7 X-64 RTM

Here's something you can do:
1: Open Internet Options and go to and uncheck Enable Protected Mode.
2: Under Advanced tab, uncheck Enable 3rd party browser extension.

Clear all cookies and temp and then restart your pc.

I am having an issue with my main pc, computer 1 in my signature, not turning on or shutting itself down. It all started last week, I left the pc on and went to work, then a couple days later went to get on the pc and it was off. I have to try several times at turning it on before I finally get a post beep, I have unplugged the dvd drive, took out the video card, (that was my problem last time) and I even took out the ram and reseated it but I still can't get it to post beep the way it should. When I finally do get it to turn on it loads everything just fine then shuts itself down unexpectedly. I have a new power supply bought earlier this year and I am also on my 3rd video card since building this system. I was thinking maybe that the stuff between the processor and cooler could be old and not working, there by forcing the shutdown, any thoughts would be appreciated.

First, click here to download Javacool's RapidBlaster killer. Launch the program and hit the Scan button. RBKiller will find any RapidBlaster variants on your system, kill the process, delete the Registry Run entry, and remove the file itself. Reboot when done.Click here to download Spybot Search & Destroy - install, update, scan and fix all RED items it finds. Reboot when done. Click here to download Ad-Aware SE and install. Before scanning click on "check for updates now" to make sure you have the latest reference file. Click "Start", select "Perform Full System scan" and "Next" to start the scan. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".Reboot when done. Rescan with HJT and post a new log here so that any remnants can be removed manually.

Check and make sure the connections on your mouse and keyboard are secure.

If you are using USB connections for them, try PS2 instead, in fact, if you can borrow a mouse and keyboard from another computer try them, again, preferably not USB connected.

If they are wireless, change the batteries (yes, they do indeed have batteries).

I've been having problem the past 2 weeks with BSOD. I've run Prime95 for like 2h, no BSOD and the temp is around 75C, I've done some chkdsk on all of my drives. Have one SSD and four HDDs.
I've also run memtest86. First time I got one errr after pass 1 finished and started with pass 2. The test had run for like 2hrs. Then I pulled out one of the RAM(the one closest to the HDD cage), ran the test again for 2,5 passes(2-3hrs), no errors. Ran the RAM I pulled out, same length, no errors. Put the other three back in and ran the test over night for 8hrs, no errors.(??) I think it was around 5-7 passes. Under computer properties it was Installed RAM: 16GB (15,9GB usable)

But I still had problems. Reinstalled Windows 7 Enterprise, installed all the Windows updates and the drivers from Gigabytes webpage, this time without the EasyTune etc.
I also have simple programs like: uTorrent, Minecraft Server, Mumble Server, Wampserver, Plex Media Server and Filezilla Server on it. So no random programs etc.
Still got problems. I've tried to reset BIOS, didn't help. I have changed from IDE to AHCI in the BIOS(cause I have SSD). When I come home today I will try to pull out two RAM and see what happens, if that doesn't help, I will try to run with the two I pull out. I will also try to disconnect the HDDs and only have the SSD plugged in.
I will try to update BIOS too. If none works I will reinstall Windows again and dont install ANYTHING and see what happens. Any ideas? I... Read more

Here comes my dumps: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...6_17283367.rar
(Download link don't work for some reason. Check the atteched files further down the thread.)

Does it matter that I use my computer via Remote Access from my main computer? That shouldn't be an issue.

Got a BSOD now when I got home.
This time is was the files: ntoskrnl.exe, tcpip.sys and win32k.sys.

Took out 2 of 4 RAM slots and will see if it BSODs anything. The RAMS are at 1600mhz atm. Shall I change back to 1333mhz?
Under Computer Properties it says: Installed RAM: 8GB (7.88GB usable)

I also use Classic theme on the dekstop. Not the Areo.

EDIT: My Samsung 840 EV 120GB SSD have the latest firmware and the chkdsk didn't show any problems what I could see and Samsung Magician showed that the disk is healthy so I don't think is the SSD anyway.

Atm I'm running with 2x4GB RAM and trying to see if the system is stable. If not, I will try the other two sticks in the meantime you guys look at the dump files.

My problem is that recently my headphones and pc speakers arent qorking properly. normally when the headphones arent plugged in the speakers should play sound and when the headphones are plugged in, the speakers mute and sound goes to the headphones.

well now its one or the other. when i boot, if the headphones are in, sound only comes to them and when they are unplugged there is nothing. same for the speakers at boot. the "playback devices" menu recognizes when the headphones are plugged in but sound still streams to speakers unless it is booted with them plugged in.

more info. a while ago i uninstalled realtek and used the computer without it for about 6 months fine. then i realized it was still hiding on the computer and tried to re-install it. it worked until i started getting BSOD's with an AVG update. now realtek is hidden with no way to access it though it's drivers are still used in adobe audition and the speaker icon says im using the stock 'high definition audio device'. i feel like this has something to do with this.

any suggestions?

Sorry if this gets long, I want to make sure I explain the problem sufficiently. I am trying to hook up my LG LCD HDTV to my husband's Toshiba Satellite via HDMI. I right-clicked on the desktop and went into "Graphics Propreties...". At first, I did a desktop clone, which worked out great, but I wasn't satisfied with the resolution. I figured it had something to do with the max resolution available on the notebook, since what displayed on the TV was just a clone of the notebook's display. I then switched to single display, with the HDTV as the display. That worked, andI was able to up the resolution past what was available before. Here is where the problem starts: I was switching back and forth with a few different resolutions, and happened to pick one that apparantly my HDTV does not like, as the screen went black and "Invalid Format" danced around the screen. As soon as I unplugged the TV from the notebook, it switched back to the notebook's display. Here is my question: I need to know how to either fix the resolution issue with the TV without it being plugged into the notebook, or I need to know how to reset the graphics settings so that it does not remember that I ever hooked it up to the TV in the first place, at which point I can start from scratch and not mess around with the resolution to begin with.

A:Solved: Problem with using HDTV as main display

Hi Skinygrl99, and welcome to TSG.

Found this in the PDF version of the A500 Series User Guide:
Directing the display output when you turn on the computer
Once you have connected an external display device, you can
choose to use the internal display only, the external device only, or
both simultaneously.
Some modes are only available with the appropriate device attached
and turned on.
The quickest way to change the display output settings is to use the
display hot key (Fn + F5):
1 Press Fn and F5 simultaneously.
2 While holding down Fn, press F5 repeatedly until the setting
you want takes effect. Briefly pause each time you press the F5
key to allow time for the display to change.
This hot key cycles through the settings in the following order:
❖ Built-in display only
❖ Built-in display and external monitor simultaneously
❖ External monitor only
❖ TV (or other external video device) only
❖ Built-in display and TV (or other external video device)
❖ Built-in display and external monitor (extended desktop)
❖ Built-in display and TV (extended desktop)
❖ Swap—Switch primary display between internal display
and external monitor when using extended desktop

That should let you get back to using the control panel to select a suitable mode for the exteranl screen.

EDIT Moved from Am I Infected to XP. As requested in post 22 ~~boopmeMy computer runs XP - Home.Last night I was prompted to update Media Player to version 8. I was afraid to do so, because many "updates" from MS mess up my computer. However, I loaded the update. I noticed the new icons in the tray and on the Start Menu, so I assumed all was well.On Friday nights I run my anti virus and anti spyware software. I started AVG anti-spyware. I checked on it 2 hours later and my boot up screen was on the monitor. By bootup screen I mean, when my machine is turned on, it stops soon after the bootup begins and says something about the Processor was changed??? and prompts me to hit F1 to continue or Del to go to the BIOS setup. I always hit F1 and the machine always bootsup just fine.Something happened while AVG was running to shut down the computer, what I don't know and I don't know if it is connected to the Media Player update or to a virus I picked up the night before (4 of us use this computer, so viruses and adware are not uncommon - I automatically run Norton Anti-virus and manually run AVG, Ad-Aware, SuperSpyware and Lavasoft). HOWEVER, this time when I hit F1 the machine did not boot up but rather loaded my desktop but with NO tray, NO icons and no response from the Windows key on the keyboard, but with only the mouse pointer on the screen. I could get the Task Manager by hitting Alt-Ctl=Del, but nothing else.I rebooted several times, and always ... Read more

i upgraded video/ram in my computer and now i can't even get the old(what was replaced) stuff to work. here's a few things to list:

install new vid card, update drivers/settings, reboot no picture to monitor.
unistall/reinstall card, boot and monitor has picture.
install another gig of ram, boot no picture.
take new ram out, boot no picture.
take new card out, put new card in, boot no picture.
take new card out, put old card in, boot no picture.
take all memory out, try known good stick in all slots, boot and no picture.
put all back in, boot, no picture.
turn power on and watch the led fans run on my 15lb paper weight.

it's a never ending combination that i've tried here and i cannot get a picture on this monitor. i've swapped monitors around and all are good, i've put components from this computer into another computer and they all worked. something is not letting this thing boot up, i get no picture to the screen and no beeps sounds or anything else, i turn the computer on and you hear the fans, hard drives, and burners powering up and everything, but there is no picture going to the monitor. it sounded like bad memory because i ran into a case of that before but all the components still work when placed into the other computer. my last guess is the board has gone sour. i was reading other posts and people have mentioned the power supply, but where do i check that at? it's a codegen 350w ... I have a Compaq Presario which has a fresh install of Windows 7 (legit). All was fine until I was playing a game on Facebook and when I went to play it again one day it wouldn't load properly to the game. I saw a popup prompting that to play games you might want adobe flash player installed but I am fairly sure I installed that when I installed windows7. I am normally very thorough but I tried to reinstall it anyway since it wouldn't or shouldn't hurt.
I then found that it wouldn't follow all the way through on the install. Partway through the install I get a popup saying "Installation encountered errors. Actionlist not found."

You can adjust your security setting from 'Control Panel / Internet Options / Security' but it is possible you have picked up a malware infection. I would advise that you download Malwareytes from here :

and run it as per its instructions. If this shows anything that you cannot confidentally deal with yourself, or that Malwarebytes cannot deal with on your behalf, you should post baqck here but in the 'Am I infected' section.
