Win 7 security essentials after Jan 2020

Q: Win 7 security essentials after Jan 2020

At one point I was told MSSE was bare min for security, so I purchased AVG security suit and it was so restrictive I uninstalled it. Now my MSSE no longer works AND Win 7 has passed end of life Jan 2020...
I tried to reinstall it before EOS, but had an error of "I already have anti malware installed, please uninstall", so I uninstalled MSSE from control panel and I seen I have "malwarebytes(free ver)" installed too, so I tried to uninstall
and had error "can't find uninstal000.dat file"... And Yes, I can search for it, it's just gone... I did find uninstal000.exe, but no .dat
So, I checked the security status tab under action center and it shows that MSSE is ON and working correctly and windows defender is OFF and I can't start WD, can't turn OFF MSSE...
I used current ver of malwarebytes to scan the computer and it found nothing wrong, I also use OutByte Pc Repair to scan/fix things and I think it does a great job on my other machines...
So I guess my questions are:
-How do I remove the malwarebytes entry off installed programs list? I want to Delete the program folder, I don't think the software works any longer because it won't start (passed trial date maybe)... But it still shows as being installed...
-I want to uninstall MSSE and reinstall it. How can I do that? I've tried taking a copy off a working machine and running setup.exe but the error of already having anti malware installed hangs it up...
-How do I stop all anti malware activity and go back to windows defender? For now and sort through my options...
Thanks for any Help...

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Previous to Win 10 v2001 Cum Update 2020-07 the following folders were in:
C:\Users\Dennis\AppData\Local\Packages\Microsoft.MicrosoftEdge_8wekyb3d8bbwe\AC\

INetcache, INetCookies, INetHistory, Microsoft, MicrosoftEdgeTemp
After Win 10 v2001 Cum Update 2020-07 (7/30/2020) on 32-bit systems only:

All folders above except: "Temp" have been moved (to where?)
Edge still works fine!  Was this a security modification to secrete those folders?
Thanks in advance for any thoughts

My computer seems to have been infected with something. It is not affecting the performance of the PC, I can still run MBAM and other scanners and can also connect to the internet. I received 4 or 5 popups when I clicked on a link this evening, similar to the lower one shown in the screenshot I have linked to at the bottom, (I thought there was an attack file feature here?). I didn't get the chance to screencap them all.A program called "Desktop Security 2010" has been installed on my computer, which keeps throwing up messages telling me I'm infect and I need to buy a license key, and tells me the same thing when I try to uninstall the program. I am currently running a full MBAM scan, and it should be finished soon.Sorry there isn't too much information, like I said there's nothing really happening to my PC other than the popups, but I'll certainly explain anything as best I can if you have questions. Can anyone help me out? Screencap of messages: http://i40.tinypic.com/2egffrt.jpgEDIT: Sorry, I didn't see the removal guide in the tutorials section.EDIT2: I've tried the removal tutorial and it won't work. MBAM doesn't find any infected files.

Hello,DDS logs attached and pasted below. Did I get it all? Thanks in advance :-)My dad called me at work to tell me that his XP Security Center was going off, warning him that his AV product wasn't running and/or up to date. The thing was, MS Security Essentials was as happy as it could be: definitions were up to date, realtime protection was on. A reboot didn't help either. That was weird. So I got to his house. By then, XP's Security Center had calmed down and reported no issues. However, opening and closing Firefox with Google as his homepage would create a detection in MS Security Essentials. MSSE called it a Blacole or Blachole exploit kit. It would show up in his Firefox cache.MSSE would quarantine it. I would delete it, and it be gone until I opened and closed Firefox again. Then it would appear again and MSSE would quarantine it again. So, I unplugged his computer from the net, and I ran a full Scan with MSSE. It found a Java exploit in some Java cache files with the common vulnerability name thingy CVR-2010-0840. It may have found some other stuff, but its not in the history any more.Than I ran a MBAM scan. It found a few more things:Files Detected: 6C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie\Desktop\Brian\Sony PC and nLIte and TinyXP files\(ACCUXP)\kv.exe (RiskWare.Tool.CK) -> Quarantined and deleted successfully.C:\Documents and Settings\Ernie\Local Settings\Temp\ICReinstall_PDFReaderSetup.exe (Adware.... Greetings and Welcome to The Forums!!My name is Gringo and I'll be glad to help you with your computer problems.I have put together somethings for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of usPlease do not run any tools unless instructed to do so.

Hi,

The Security Center service cannot be started due to virus destruction.

Have you tried the repair for Windows? If not, you can go to following SkyDrive to load the registry and import it to check the result.

http://cid-9fb18a384ebfc662.office.live.com/self.aspx/.Documents/wscsvc%5E564%5E6.zip

Before importing it, please back up the following registry key first. Just find the key and right click it, choose export and save to desktop.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\services\wscsvc]

After importing the correct registry, please go to services Windows to check if Security Center starts properly.

Hi Folks, Sorry for another question so soon after my previous post yesterday...I just got my computer back from the repair shop a few days ago. They removed a virus. They installed Microsoft Security Essentials, and told me that only one antivirus programs should be active on my computer to avoid potential conflicts. However, I just noticed that they left McAfee Security Scan Plus loaded, since it popped up and started scanning a few hours ago.My question is: Is there any reason why they would leave McAfee Security Scan Plus loaded in addition to loading Microsoft Security Essentials, especially when they told me only one AV program should be active? Can those two programs peacefully coexist, or should I delete one of them?Thank you again for your expertise,Best regardsGary

Hello guys (and girls),I don't give up very easy, that's not really my thing. But this here, is really out of my league.I feel like giving up at this point and leave the Digital Western World to go live in a cave.I am trying over a week now to get rid of Microsoft Security Essentials.I even suspect that there are two different Trojans/Programs running (Security Tool & Microsoft Security Essentials.I think I really tried everything. Running Rkill.exe to stop processes. Ran malwarebytes at least 50 times, threw the outcome away, but it will pop up right after restart. Ran Spybot S&D, threw stuff out of the registry. What do you think of Vipre as a replacement for Security Essentials for Vista```What are you using``` Thanks RichardMod Edit...Moved to General Security from Vista ~~boopme

A:Vipre advanced security to replace security essentials

VIPRE Anti-virus, previously owned by GFI, is now developed by ThreatTrack Security Inc. but it was originally introduced in May 2010 by Sunbelt Counterspy...one of the early pioneers in anti-malware protection with an outstanding reputation for years. Counterspy was officially discontinued a year later and customers were offered the option to switch to VIPRE Anti-virus previously owned by GFI but now developed by ThreatTrack Security Inc. As with most security vendors, existing web site links were redirected to the new product.I have never personally used VIPRE. I have read it that it's blocking of malicious downloads was only adequate and that it's zero-day malware detection was below average. Generally if you're dealing with zero-day malware it's unlikely most anti-virus testing is going to detect anything since it takes time for new malware to be reported, samples collected, analyzed, and tested by anti-virus researchers before they can add a new threat to database definitions. The researchers at ThreatTrack Security need to show some improvement in these areas.

Well here goes nothin!  My lap top got a trojan about 7 months ago so I took it to Staples to get it fixed(remove trojan). The tech said that I needed an anti-virus that Microsoft security essentials isn't a true AV. Well I allowed them to install their AV software(SOPHOS). I have been having major speed problems and still get pop ups every once in a while. So I decided to uninstall SOPHOS and re install MSE. I can't get MSE to install. I thought I read somewhere on this forum that MSE is no longer supported by Microsoft. If so do I need to get a different AV?

A:Security Essentials

You can review the system requirements, and download Microsoft Security Essentials for Windows Vista or Windows 7 at the link below.

It is fully supported with updates.

After Microsoft Security Essentials been out for FREE for a few months it surprises me how many don't know about this great tool.
I think many who have used it and tested it have decided that it is a good package in fighting off the foe.

I know that many will jump in here and tell me how they like all the rest and that is OK. I do know that no one software package will keep you totally free from those gremlins. Like others have said here just using a little common sense on where you go will dramatically reduce your chances of getting a trojan, virus or the flu.

Anyway I just wanted to keep MS Security Essentials on everyones try list.
I think you will like it.

Here is the Microsoft link if you decide to try.
http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

and it is easy to install and uninstall not like the other big boy packages that like to hide stuff around.

FAQ

Q: How is this different from Windows Defender?
A: Windows Defender detects and removes known spyware only. It is not designed to protect against the full breadth of malicious software, and specifically does not prevent viruses, worms, Trojans, and other malicious software from infecting your machine. The new no-cost solution will be a comprehensive anti-malware solution.

Q: Is Microsoft Security Essentials designed to replace Windows Defender?
A: No but if you are running Microsoft Security Essentials, you do not need to run Windows Defender. Microsoft Security Essentials is designed to disable Windo... Read more

A PC that I am working on today has Microsoft Security Essentials installed as its AV program.

The MS Security Essentials Icon is visible in the Taskbar and when clicked MSE opens and options such as Scan and Update all work as expected.

However, in the same Taskbar the Windows Security Centre Icon is also visible which when clicked reports that "Your computer is at risk...Microsoft Security Essentials is turned OFF...."

Updating, restarting several times and numerous cups of coffee have not resolved the problem. MSE says it is ON while WSC says that it is OFF.

Any opinions as to which of these services is reporting correctly..

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.70.0.1100

SUPERAntiSpyware 5.6.0.1014

in all my computers, and they protect it just fine.

Have been able to update Microsoft Security Essentials by manually downloading the latest definition files from Microsoft's Download Catalog. It could be that I'm using service pack 3. Which I also downloaded from the same site. Trick is to not put in your search box (on this site) Windows XP updates. Just put in: "service pack updates". Then scroll through the available list that pops up till you find the right version. Mine was the 32 bit version, so I could update my oem copy of 'xp pro sp2'. Did that & the updates came pouring in through "automatic updates". Hours & hours, gigabytes of downloads.

Hey Everyone!!

Help me out here please?

I've never been clear on what programs, as far as anti-anythings go that you can run while also running Microsoft's security essentials!

Can you or should you run Avast or Malwarebytes while Microsoft is running?

What programs Should you be running besides Microsoft's Security Essentials?

Thanks

A:Security Essentials And .. What?

You need:- one firewall (Windows firewall will do)- one antivirus program (If you have Microsoft Security Essenatials, which is an antivirus program, you can't have any other, like Avast)- you can have several antispyware programs installed (Malwarebytes, Superantispyware, etc.), bit you should run only one in real time; free versions of the mentioned programs don't run in real-time, so you can have them both

Used to use Avast antivirus which l was really quite happy with but it seemed to be getting rather resource hungry, and seemed to be slowing the system down, response wise. (Its icon kept whirling away but at least it indicated it was doing something!)
Changed to MS Security Essentials, and it does seem to do what it says on the tin. Things seems a lot faster now and it also has a very simple interface which is a doddle to use. (one niggle is that its icon disappears from the toolbar and you have to expand it again to see if its working).
Under Avast, and throughout the day, messages would pop up to say that the programs database has been updated.
Doesn't appear so for MSE (well not for me anyway). I have to manually update it each time. Have read their sites notes as well as this sites notes on installation and have made sure that no old virus software remains. Have reinstalled MSE, just in case, but it still requires updates manually.
For example, my computer has been on all day and MSE says it's covered. Just before writing this post, went into the updates tab, and manually downloaded another four signature files. How can it be up to date then?
Am l doing something wrong or am l missing the point somewhere along the line?
Thanks

A:MS Security Essentials

Microsoft Security Essentials auto-updates once every 24 hours and there is no setting within MSE to change the scheduled time or frequency. See the MSE Definitions/Signatures Update FAQ. As such, you can always manually download the latest Microsoft Security Essentials updates from the Microsoft Malware Protection Center Portal. Also see this announcement:Microsoft has confirmed an issue with Microsoft Security Essentials that can occur when some PCs are regularly offline for extended periods and are frequently toggled between sleep/hibernate and active mode. In some cases, these machines may be delayed in receiving their regularly scheduled signature updates.Microsoft is aware of the problem and is working on a solution. In the interim, we recommend that users who are not regularly online and who frequently sleep/hibernate their machines reboot or manually update their signatures at least weekly to ensure they have the latest threat definitions downloaded.Microsoft Answers

I uninstalled AVG (free version --- been on there for years) from the old HP G56 laptop.

Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit

I then downloaded and installed Microsoft Security Essentials.

Everything went along fine and may still be ................

Once MSE got installed, it then downloaded and installed a bunch of updates; about halfway through the update process, the RED stripe across the top of the window that did say "at risk" turned GREEN and says "protected"

Then it went into a "quick scan"; it says "this may take a few moments --- please wait"

It has been scanning non-stop for 15-1/2 hours and has currently scanned 28,770 items and counting.

The little progress bar is at a bit more than 1/3

Is this amount of time normal for such a first-time task ?

I have two desktops/towers, so I am in no big rush to use the laptop; I just didn't know if it should take such a long time.

Thanks for reading.

I am just a wife and mother who has learned all I have through experience (the hard way). I will add that since purchasing our Dell Dimension 9100 in mid 2005, we have been hit twice by the fake Security center virus, which prompts us to purchase some virus removal program from them in order to remove it. I have discovered they operate out of another country and do this to gain your credit card info and I think you get the picture from there...?Anyway,the first time we caught the virus I paid Dell over a hundred dollars to walk me through the task of doing a clean boot and in the end, lost everything. But the second time rather than call Dell, I tried to research it and like so many others, download this and that to no prevail and in the end, the virus won and my hard drive was blank by the time I relented and called (and yes, PAYED (now 50 dollars) Dell. Before calling Dell my Internet carrier recommended PLUMLINE, who assured me that if they could not resolve the issue that my credit card would be 100 % refunded. They determined my hard drive was destroyed and I would need to call Dell and have them send me the software needed to reinstall everything. BUT!!! First the man gave me some valuable advice which has turned out to prove true for us. Plumline told me that they had been testing Windows Essentials for some time now, which is a FREE SECURITY SERVICE for windows users!!! We had been using McAfee since purchasing our Dell, but he told me that if... Read more

Hello,

I and many other users on this forums use MSE, and we all agree it is a very good A\V. I have seen way to many problems with AVG to recommend it to others; I had a memory leak myself.

I recommend MSE because it is fast, lightweight, and does not slow down boot times much.

Are you by any chance using some sort of "disk cleanup" program? They can delete your logs and make MSE think it has not been updated recently.

Getting a lot of update failures recently for Microsoft Security Essentials, running with Win 7 Pro, 32-bit.
So far the following definitions updates have failed: 1.249.12.69.0, 1.249.1405.0,  1.2511.126.0, and 1.251.173.0. They all failed with error code 80070650.
I have Windows Update check for  updates every day, and what's odd is I've recently been getting the MSE updates two at a time and that started the same day the first failure occurred (8-19-17).
The update history lists 3 updates with today's date, but only 2 were offered when WU checked. So I don't know why 3 are listed with today's date:
1.251.170.0 successful (installed first)1.251.173.0 failed (attempted next) 1.249.211.0 successful (installed last)
Even stranger, the update history says 1.249.211.0 was successfully installed 2 days ago, so why was it installed again today..????
Malwarebytes and SAS say the system is clean...
The error code isn't informative, and my exact problem was reported 3 days ago on a German site here, so I'm not alone in this...
Anybody got any ideas..??

A:MS Security Essentials ?

UPDATE:
There's a thread over on the MS forum about this issue, but no fix offered, as of now... It may be the result of a botched update to the MSE scanning engine which was issued on 8-19-17.
Geez...what's wrong with those guys in Redmond?

Hello,

This all began when I started have some issue with Firefox.  The bookmarks toolbar would disappear if I restarted FF, I would have to refresh webpages to get them to load, things like that.  I believe I have found the culprit for at least the bookmark issue, and I can live with refreshing.

However, in my stubborn attempt to resolve this myself, I attempted (and succeeded, several times in fact) to run combofix to try and help the situation.  My issue now is, combofix detects AV Security Essentials to be running, and I can find no instances or evidence of it anywhere on the computer in order to shut it off.  This is the only appearance of AVSE, I don't get popups or anything like that.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks,

MS Security Essentials will provide you basic protection, I used to have it installed before switching to NIS but it didn't detect some malware samples and had a very slow scanning speed. It also had some false positives. It may be enough for the average user but it isn't for heavy downloaders. Go for a full suite for total protection

A:Security Essentials:

Hi raju.prof, and welcome to TSF.

Its entirely possible you are infected but first, try this.

The Security Service is not being started at boot time because it has been disabled. Go to Start - Run - enter "services.msc" (without the quotes) and click OK. This will list all the system services. Scroll down to find the Security Center service, right click on it and choose Properties. In the "Startup type" box, use the drop-down menu and set it to Automatic. Click the Apply button, then click the Start button to check that the service is able to start normally, which it should. Now click OK to exit out. The Security Center service should start automatically on next boot.

Let me know if this works. If not, tell me what antivirus/spyware protection you have installed.

AV Security Essentials popped up. Ran AVG but I think it had already messed with AVG.

Couldn't get new Malwarebytes, IP messed, so I downloaded to my Smartphone and then sucked it over to PC.

Ran MWB's which stopped AVSE from controlling PC.... then updated MWB's and re-scanned.

Now doing clean up of any and all remnants of AVSE, including Host replacing.

One step at a time, I can use browser and system seems pretty normal but we shall see what AVSE left behind.

Not sure how I got it, was browsing at the time with about 15 tabs open in FireFox 3.6.18

Will update this as I get 'er done.
