No Sound through Laptop and Headphones. Interesting scenario..

Q: No Sound through Laptop and Headphones. Interesting scenario..

Hello All,

I have a very interesting problem on my laptop. I am unable to get any sound through my internal speakers and headphones. I also am unable to set the headphones as my default device, even if I disabled the speakers.
I have tried the troubleshooting for both speakers and headphones, but to no avail. While troubleshooting for speakers, I get no issue found. While troubleshooting for headphones, it asks me to set the default device as audio. I say yes to it but at the end get the error "Not Fixed. Unable to set the default device as headphones."

Here is a very interesting part. If I enable both of them and the internal speakers are set as default (can't change it), now if I do a test on Headphones in the "Playback devices". I am able to hear sound through my laptop speakers!!!!!

Does anyone have any idea what is going on???

Please help...

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Sound is such a pain to troubleshoot. First thing I suggest is get a screenshot for us to see all your devices. Next try to reset everything to default and work from there. Disable everything you don't need. Also do you have any third-party software that controls sound like SoundMax?

If nothing seems to be working you can try to uninstall/reinstall the sound drivers. Check Device Manager.

Hi, We have had computers tampered with for months now, always at a weekend when the building is closed
and finally we may be onto the guilty party. but.... I need some help if you can provide it.
What 's happened latest is this;

At close of business on Friday evening all computers are shut down and all power outlets are switched off.
On returning to work on Monday mornings it is frequently found that one or more computers have been switched on
and used over the weekend, it is strange that in all cases the computers show a black screen with text in white and the
display stating that attempts are being made to install or use UNIX.

The last occurrence of this was overnight 7/8 December 2008. Having reported the matter to our business manager
and thence to building management, enquiries indicate that a member of the security staff may be responsible.
There is a record of this person signing himself out at 4.30 am that morning (08/12/08).

My query is this; is there any way to search the relevant PC and determine whether it was used on that night.
This would be the proof needed to determine the person responsible and end the repeated tampering.

Is the above possible to do? if so how? Cheers

I just bought this hp pavilion dv6-2162nr laptop, and suddenly the speakers stopped working.

I removed the driver and reinstall it, I tried plugging in and out the headphones, I tried different solutions from different forums (including from this forum HP laptop no sound from speaker but there is sound through headphone), and couldn't get it fixed.

I have win 7 home premium 64-bit.

I don't think it is a hardware problem, because when i play with the headphones volume control (from the taskbar), suddenly i hear sound from the speakers (when i stop playing with it the sound stops).

I also tried hp support, and they couldn't help me.

Brand new laptop from pcspecialist.co.uk.

I'm not getting any sound through my headphones.

Have tried different headphones - both of which work on other devices.

Sound works fine through speakers, when headphones are connected sound stops coming from speakers and there is no sound from speakers.

There is a pop noise when i plug headphones into jack

Not muted / volume levels are up.

When plugging in headphones, they are not recognised in control panel>sound>playback but speakers are.

Any help is greatly appreciated. I have a sony vaio VGN-NW310f laptop with Windows 7. Up until 2 days ago everything was perfect, but suddenly I am getting no sound from the speakers. If I plug in headphones I get sound, but if I unplug headphones, nothing! Well, the computer acts like the sound is working, but I hear nothing.
Right now speaker properties shows I have "High Definition Audio Device" by Microsoft. I know that I had realtek speakers before, but in my attempt to "fix" my problem, I clicked "roll back driver" and somehow lost the realtek and now have the microsoft speakers. I guess it doesn't really matter which speakers I have as long as they work!
Any idea how to get sound again!?

I got my HPg61-429wm laptop back from the computer shop, I had a problem with my fan. Before that, my headphones worked like normal, so I don't know if taking the computer apart to replace the fan might have messed with the headphone jack somehow or what. My headphones worked for my mp3 player, so I know it's not them. When I plug my headphones in, the sound plays from the speakers instead.

I've tried going to sound in control panel -> sound, setting independent headphones as default with the green circle by it, nothing happened, yet this seems to solve most other people's problems.
I tried using Everest and under PCI/ PnP (no idea what this is) I have two "High Definition Audio Controller [NoDB]" listings. I google that, and someone mentions to download Realtek AC 97, so I do that, install - nothing.

I tried uninstalling the sound drivers from device manager. The ones I have are ATI High Definition Audio Device and IDT High Definition Audio Codec. I tried right click -> update, going to HP's audio drivers and installing them. I went to IDT's page, and they just redirect you to the computer brand manufacturer for audio drivers. I have no idea where to find audio drivers from ATI.

I used dxdiag and this is what the sound tab says:
Name:Speakers and Headphones (IDT High Definition

I will try to be as detailed as possible. I am pretty experienced with drivers and sound settings but this problem has me stumped.

I have a Fangbook III made by Cyperpower PC. I am unable to play sound via the on-board speakers for the laptop. I am however able to play sound through the 3.5mm auxiliary jack input. I have speakers set as default device under the playback settings.

This is where is gets strange. Whenever I attempt to delete the Realtek audio driver, whether it is through windows or a 3rd-party driver uninstallation software, Realtek always comes back within a few seconds. Right before it does come back, under playback, it separates speakers and headphones with both having the driver High Definition Audio Device. If I hurry before the Realtek driver comes back the speakers seems to work! But once the Realtek audio speakers comes back, the default speakers and headphones goes away and I continue to have the same problem with the Realtek driver.

I attempted to reformat the computer with windows 10 and erase all drivers but Realtek was already installed. I assume it is required for this specific laptop? Any ideas on how to direct the Reaktek High Definition Audio driver to use the speakers instead of the auxiliary jack?

Thanks for the help and let me know if there is any more information that you guys need.

Hi Guys,

I have a HCL laptop with Windows 8 Pro x86 installed. Whenever I connect my headphones I don't get any sound from it. I have gone to my "Playback Devices" and selected "Show Disabled Devices" and the headphones are not listed there. What can I do to work around this problem ? I need my headphones to play sound. Should I update my audio driver? I upgraded my laptop from Windows 7 to Windows 8 with migrating all my settings. I am using VIA HD Audio Deck as my default sound driver. Thanks.

A:Headphones dont play sound on laptop.

Check with the PC vendor for any drivers. The PC vendor's drivers are the preferred drivers. Drivers from other sources may or may not work correctly.

However, since up upgraded, Windows may have installed the generic basic function HD Audio Codec drivers, either alone or in addition to the VIA audio drivers. If this is the case, the HD Audio Codec drivers could be conflicting and cause problems. Go to the Device Manager and Display what Audio Devices are listed. The VIA should be listed and if you have HDMI audio that will be listed. If the HD Audio Codec is listed, Right click on the entry and then Left click "Uninstall". Restart the PC and check for headphone operation.

Used my computer after work to listen to music with headphones in and it sounds rubbish, bearable but rubbish. I have Sennheiser headphones that usually sound fantastic, they still do sound fantastic on my phone listening to the same song on Spotify.

Anyway, tried Spotify and YouTube and the music just sounds rubbish, kind of flat and no bass. Tried using the audio adjustments and it's not really made a difference. It was fine this morning.

The laptop's built in speakers sound as bad as usual, better than the headphones though which isn't right at all.

Really am stumped as to why this has happened.

Assuming nothing has happened to the hardware from the last time you used it, if you have a System Restore point that is when it did work, try restoring the PC back to that date and see what happens.

I've got a Thinkpad T430s (Windows 7) here and it's acting strangely. Namely, if I play a clip through the laptop's speakers, I hear no sound, but when I plug the headphones, everything works nice and neat.
One thing I noticed, is that computer actually recognises the sound, because the volume mixer/application, at the lower right/tray, and it's volume bar shows me the green indicators jumping up and down, as the music plays.

Of course I've tried reinstalling the drivers, I've uninstalled the audio device in Device Manager and restarted the computer. And yes, the obvious things are also checked - nothing (the applications) is muted in the volume mixer, default device is correct under playback devices.

Some have reported on the web, that it might help to use toothpick for example and "un-jam the sensor", but that didn't help either.

I've also tried booting up the newest Linux Mint (has pretty good multimedia support) from the USB and I heard no sound through speakers.

So I'm out of ideas here. It looks more and more like a hardware fault, but how can I be absolutely sure?
Thanks for helping out,

Hey all, I'm new here, very frustrated, and hoping I can get this solved.

My computer is a HP dv7-2185DX in total stock form.

I have no sound coming from my speakers. I don't know of any specific trigger. A friend ejected my iPod and walked off with it, but that's the only action I can think of done on the computer for a while.

Looking in the IDT Audio panel it says the following:

With no headphones in - it shows that I have a pair plugged in my middle jack.
With headphones on the left (mic) jack - it shows a mic plugged in and nothing else
With headphones in the middle - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)
With headphones on the right - it shows both headphone jacks as filled (the one on the right shows up as filled too)

EDIT: More symptoms:

Now it shows the wrong front panel in the IDT Audio screen. It shows as 2-jack layout with mic (L) / headphone (R)

When I plug in phones in my PC into the jacks on the front, it shows as follows....

R side headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
Middle headphone - shows in screen as the right jack
L Mic - shows in screen as the left side mic

** When my phones are plugged in the Mic jack sound is produced under both situations. **

I'd appreciate any help I can get. I already tried rolling back the IDT Audio CODEC (one of the few things I can think to do in this situation, hoping it will help.) I'm going to re-update it and see if that helps, but anything beyond, I'm cluele... Read more

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 17 laptop with Windows 8.1. When I first plug my headphones into the audio jack it works and it's initially silent. However, after I finish playing any sound from any app through the headphones, a static sound constantly comes through them. It doesn't sound like the noise from a loose connection or anything. It sounds more like the sound of ocean waves. It lasts for about 30 seconds after having played any sound, and then it goes silent again. I've tested it with multiple headphones and I've also tested it with the speakers itself and it doesn't happen. It only does it when something is plugged into the audio jack.
The only clue I have is that when I had Windows 7, it used to recognize devices plugged into the audio jack as "headphones", but on this computer it lists it as "speakers." I'm not sure if this is just a Windows 8 thing or if it has something to do with the problem. I can still return the computer so I'm wondering if this is a malfunction or if it can be fixed through the OS.

A:Static sound coming from headphones on Windows 8 laptop

The headphones not being identified as headphones is standard on many sound systems. Both my Win 7 and Win 8.1 systems do not identify headphones when plugged in.

Do you have different headphones you can try or can you try the headphones you have on a different PC? That will tell you if its the PC or the headphones. As it doesn't do it with the PC's speakers says its not a program causing it or some sound enhancement. Also with the headphones plugged in, wiggle the headphone plug to see if you hear any noise.

I am using an Advent 5303 laptop with sound connected to external speakers via the headphone/line out socket. Recently the audio output via this socket stopped working and now a red light is constantly shining from the socket. The internal laptop speakers work fine, just headphones or external speakers do not work. Full spec of the laptop can be found here:

The laptop uses the Realtek High Definition Audio software which used to lauch a pop-up when speakers were connected. This pop-up still launches when a microphone is connected, but not with headphones or speakers. I have tried reinstalling the drivers and the light does go out but then comes up again and the speakers stop working.

Hoping this isn't a hardware fault, but would appreciate some guidance from anyone who has seen this before.

I have looked quite a bit for my problem, and perhaps a fix to my problem and I have never been able to find one. I've tried Microsoft fix-its, they do not work.

Basically my problem is at random times, my headset will just stop working and it will switch back to my laptop, as if my headphones are not even plugged in. It happens multiple times a day, seemingly at random (lately its been this way, but I have had it go longer than a day without doing this to me). As I am browsing the internet, as I am turning on a game, when I am away and the computer is just sitting there.

I've tried checking my device manager for differences when it is working and when it is not, I've tried updating all software, I've tried setting default devices. None of it has helped.

The only thing that fixes this is logging off, or restarting the computer. This then returns it to normal.

My laptop is an HP Pavilion dv6 windows 7 home premium x64.
Headphones in question are Razor Carcharias.

My existing audio output jacks on the motherboard look like this:

I use the:

Green ? Front Right and Front Left
Orange ? Centre and Subwoofer
Black ? Rear Right and Rear Left

I got the Logitech z-906 5.1 surround sound and the back looks like this:

It?s using the three 3.5mm audio jacks that come out the motherboard and go into the corresponding coloured inputs.

The sound card (ASUS STXII 7.1 )that I wanna get has these outputs except as RCA outputs ( it consists of two cards, one main card and a daughterboard)

If I get three of these 3.5 mm to RCA connectors, and plug them into the outputs of the sound card and into the inputs of the z906 will it convert the sound properly, in terms of left and right and specifically centre and subwoofer?

Hope this illustrates what i would like to do in order to achieve surround sound from the sound card.
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

A:Sound card scenario

That Asus sound card is 7.1 channel, which is 8 discreet channels. The red and white outputs on the motherboard of the Asus are only for front left and right, they only have one channel of information each. I am not aware of an RCA jack that is able to carry more than just one channel of audio information, so your adaptors are going to have to be some kind of Y adaptors.

Yesterday I was carrying out a clean installation which is re-installation windows 7 but when I was at the stage of 1- collect information "Installing Windows", a member of family from downstairs slams the back door kitchen hard which caused vibrations underneath my laminate flooring where it can be felt since my bedroom is below the kitchen. The laptop was placed in a table at that time. I am concerned if it can have an impact on the laptop components or causes problems in windows 7 such as corrupt file systems from HDD due to vibrations via the kitchen door.

This is the stage where I was when carrying out clean installation:http://www.techtalkz.com/gallery/fil...4-14-55-38.jpg

Hi James,

Did the installation went well? are you able to use your OS ?

Vibrations cannot affect laptop hardware. Big Electro magnets can be dangerous though.

This might sound like I am a complete moron, but its an issue that is very tiring.

Last night my computers sound was working fine, came online this morning to find the headphones wont be recognized. Only time this crap elitebook decides the headphones are "ready" (for use I guess) is when they are either plugged into a jack that
has absolutely nothing to do with the performance of the sound, or if the headphones aren't plugged in at all.

Now I am sure you're all prolly thinking "if it works in one jack but not the other, then its simple as keep in it the jack that works moron" its not this simple I assure you. As I stated before, the jack that seems to recognize the headphones
actually being plugged in is worthless since ever since I bought this POS laptop or notebook that jack has done nothing for any sound device, internal or external, whatsoever. I am actually dumbfounded as to why they even installed it in the first place.

Now I have done virus checks, found nothing, I have rebooted the comp to an earlier time, it fails to fix this and even formatted the comp using the safe mode options but nothing seems to get this crap windows 7 to allow elitebook to recognize the headphones
when actually plugged into the port they are meant for.

And yea i know, why don't i use the on board speakers? well its a simple fact of I live with roommates, and so cannot play the sound openly with them here. So I am sorta irritated this comp wont recognize t... Read more

I have a toshiba a205-s5800, it is just out of warranty. all of a sudden the sound has stopped working. I have reinstalled the sound driver, still no luck.

A:No sound played trough speakers but sound works from headphones

If you are not able to listening any sound even error beep, then it seems hardware fault inside your system.
It may speaker goes faulty. You should consult your computer hardware vendor.

I have a problem with audio on system speakers Inspiron 13 5368 2-in-1. I have exhausted all my ideas.
The audio is fine through plugged in headset but through system speakers it starts loud and fades away to very faint audio coming from two speakers.Could this be some type of Auto volume control? This problem exists with ITunes with local media, DIRECTV, Slacker, YouTube.
This has existed through several W10 upgrades. I am on the latest W10. No updates available. I have used Dell Auto Update and verified through the website no other drivers are missing or outdated
With the deal Audio I restored to default, disabled equalizer, audio and microphone enhancement. No luck
I have removed audio devices from device manager rebooted to same results. Any other ideas?

Dell Auto Update you're referring to is Dell Support Assist? If no, I suggest you diagnose Audio with Dell Support Assist. Most Dell systems have Support Assist pre-installed. You can check by typing Support Assist onto [Cortana] search box or right click windows logo and then click on 'Programs & Features'. If Support Assist isn't installed on system then I suggest you click on the link below and stroll down to 'Download Now'.

Hi folks,
I'm an enthusiast, as you probably know by now, and I have a question. I was reading through the manual for sound forge the other night, and I discovered lots of references to the Nyquist frequency. Does anyone here know what that is, and does it have anything to do with audacity's menu choice Nyquist prompt? any explanation or input would be great.

A:interesting find in the sound Forge manual

Hi, the Nyquist frequency is half the sample rate of a digitally encoded signal. That's the highest audio frequency that the sampling can describe unambiguously - the common example is the CD 44.1 KHz rate, for which the Nyquist frequency is 22.05 KHz.The Nyquist prompt in Audacity accesses a programming language to control effects processing.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyquist_frequencyhttp://wiki.audacityteam.org/index.php?tit..._Nyquist_Prompt

Why would speakers sound scratchy, but headphones and external cabled speakers sound OK? I have a Dell Studio 15 (1555) running windows 7 Professional.

236GB used, 214GB free space
Intel P8700 2.53 GHz Processor
64 bit OS
4GB memory

The built-in speakers used to sound good but now they are too scratchy to understand. However the headset sound is good. According to the Dell Support Assist utility, the sound card is "ATI high Definition Audio Device" and "IDT High Definition Audio CODEC."
Microphone test -- earphone playback is OK, on-board speaker terrible.

A:Why would on-board speakers sound scratchy but headphones sound OK?

You Dell Studio 1555 laptop uses IDT HD audio driver for the built in laptop speakers.
The ATI HD audio driver is only used if an HDMI connection to an HDMI monitor (with an HDMI audio/video cable) is used.

possibly a driver conflict with IDT audio, built-in speakers may be malfunctioning or dirty (gotta have them repaired if it's a hardware problem and not a software problem). just listing the possible causes for the scratchy sound.

Recently, when I was using my Windows 10 desktop PC, I noticed that I had no sound for all programs and speakers/headphones I tried. Normally when I have no sound, it is exclusive to one program. I tried to fix the problem by reinstalling my Realtek audio drivers, but to no avail. Perhaps my sound card is broken or I am just doing something wrong?

A:Sound not working for all headphones... sound card broken?

To be sure, they're not muted, correct? Sometimes it's the most simple solution.
If they're not muted and the volume is turned up, then it's possible your sound card failed.

You could try booting into safe mode to see if some type of software is causing it.

In my computer i had plugged in two headphones.
One is for my brother, and one is for me.

So sometimes we used to hear speeches, music etc... at same time.

But sometimes i could feel to play football games.

And its sounds will be disturbance for him. So any solution for this?

Different sounds for each headphones?

A:Two headphones different sound for each headphones?

mishab, welcome to the forums.

What you;re looking to do isn't possible without two sound cards, and then only if the game/program being used has the option in it to use an audio device other than the Windows default.

Hello  I have been using my hp for over a year with little or no problems and this only happened 3 days ago. I came home from college and I booted up the laptop and there was no sound what so ever so I plugged in my headhones and the sound was distorted. So I thought It must be a Driver Issue so I updated the drivers and It fixed it or so I thought. The next day I came home and had the same problem but when I had the headphones in I could hear that the sound was going from distorted to normal rapidly so I just jiggled the headphone jack and It was fixed. Now today I came home as usual and same thing happens so I tried the jiggle trick from yesterday and nope it didnt work. But after a few mins It ficed itself  Now I havent got a clue whats causing this and Im getting frustrated. Can I do anything to resolve this   Does It matter that I have my headphones plugged on all the time or could it be the head phone jack that is causing issues
