Outlook Express Won't Launch After Clicking on E-mail

Q: Outlook Express Won't Launch After Clicking on E-mail

Hi, I am using Outlook Express 6 with my Dell Dimension 4400 (Windows XP). I opened my Outlook Express this morning and clicked on an e-mail that I thought was from att (bellsouth). Ever since then, I've not been about to launch Outlook Express. When I try to launch it all I get is the Outlook Express 6 blue opening but it stays on screen and it doesn't open so I can read my mail plus the CPU light stays on continuously as if there is something running. Let me know if you can assist me. Thank you.

Preferred Solution: Outlook Express Won't Launch After Clicking on E-mail

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello,I will be helping you with your problems. Please be patient while I assist you. Some points for you to keep in mind while I am helping you to make things go easier and faster for both of us Please do NOT run, install or uninstall any programs,  unless instructed to do so.
We ask you to run different tools in a specific order to ensure the malware is completely removed from your machine, and running any additional tools may detect false positives, interfere with our tools, or cause unforeseen damage or system instability.
Please do not attach logs or use code boxes, just copy and paste the text.
Due to the high volume of logs we receive it helps to receive everything in the same format, and code boxes make the logs very difficult to read. Also, attachments require us to download and open the reports when it is easier to just read the reports in your post.
Please read every post completely before doing anything.
Pay special attention to the NOTE: lines, these entries identify an individual issue or important step in the cleanup process.
Please provide feedback about your experience as we go.
A short statement describing how the computer is working helps us understand where to go next, for example: I am still getting redirected, the computer is running normally, etc. Please do not describe the computer as "the same", this requires the extra step of looking back at your previous post.
NOTE: At the top of your post, click on the Watch Topic Button, select Immediate Notification, and click on Proceed. This will send you an e-mail as soon as I reply to your topic, allowing us to resolve the issue faster.NOTE: Backup any files that cannot be replaced. Removing malware can be unpredictable and this step can save a lot of heartaches if things don't go as planed. You can put them on a CD/DVD, external drive or a pen drive, anywhere except on the computer.- Do NOT backup any unknown files ending in .exe, .com, .scr, .pif, and .bat since files of these types are more likely to be infected.NOTE: It is good practice to copy and paste the instructions into notepad and print them in case it is necessary for you to go offline during the cleanup process. To open notepad, navigate to Start Menu > All Programs > Accessories > Notepad. Please remember to copy the entire post so you do not miss any instructions.----------------------------------------------Please do the following:Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe on your desktop to run the tool for known TDSS variants.

Internet Explorer and Outlook Express won't launch from either the Start menu, the All Programmes menu or the quick launch toolbar. The internet connection is fine, it's just that the programmes don't start (the hourglass is briefly on show, then stops).

I run XP Home (Service Pack 2) on an Intel Pentium (R) 4 (CPU 2,53).

I've recently been battling (for the first time in ages) with a lot of viruses, though don't know if that's connected. So I thought I'd ask XP support first in case there's something simple that I'm missing.

My PC has been struggling for speed for months - and in efforts to speed it up have used CCleaner recently and weeded out the Local Settings/Temp files.

My normal anti-virus software is McAfee VirusScan Enterprise 8.0.0. To help identify and fight some viruses that weren't being picked up by McAfee, I installed free versions of Security Task Manager, SpyProtector and, most recently BitDefender v10.

Any help much appreciated (have been able to sign up with techsupport through webmail on wireless laptop).

It will however open a new mail window if I clic on "New message".

I have an email address with my ISP. When I lauch Outlook Express it defaults to my main identity. I have Internet Explorer 5 and I have Windows 4 NT. My wife was clever and set up a second identity for her hotmail email in the Outlook Express box. (which I recently found out she should not have done.) It was working fine for a couple of weeks. Then it got locked up when I switched from Main Identity to Her Identity. I rebooted and now whenever I lauch Outlook Express (either from the start menu or from the shortcut) I get an hourglass to tell me something is starting to work and then it does nothing....

Help! I am locked out of my email.
I had to use my wife's email address just to post this question.

Anxiously waiting to see if someone can help. Tom R.

Hi - my first time so I'm keeping my fingers crossed that I can even log a question, never mind get an answer! Anyway, here goes:

I am running an Asus Eee PC 1.66ghz 1.99 gb RAMIntel Atom

Asus runs XP Home Edition V2002 Service pack 3

I loaded MS/Office 2007 Student edition: I de-selected Outlook Express as I didn't want/need it, but ever since then whenever I switch on the PC I get the following message: "Outlook Express could not be started. The application was unable to open the Outlook Express store. Your computer may be out of memory (it isn't!) or your disk is full (it isn't!)"

When I reply OK to this message I get a follow on message "To free up disk space Outlook Express can compact messages, this may take a few minutes". I respond OK to this and get a Windows message ?Windoes search system tray has encountered a problem and needs to close". After responding to this message the problem seems to clear and I can continue using the PC with no further messages or issues.

If anyone could help please to get rid of these irksome messages it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Mike Marenghi

A:Outlook Express tries to launch on login

At what point in the install did you de-select Outlook Express? Outlook Express is incorporated into the OS, and Microsoft Outlook does not come with MS/Office 2007 Student edition. Have you looked into the System Configuration Utility? In there you can chose which programs to start in the Start up tab.

Have recently changed my default browser over to Slimbrowser (Flashpeak), and a little problem has come up. When I click a link in a email message (I use Outlook Express) either a basic hyperlink or image with a hyperlink nothing happens. If I open a htm/html file (normally from lets say the desktop) it will open in SlimBrowser like it should. If I go start run 'http://google.com' google will be open in a new tab in SlimBrowser (like it should). But clicking links in Outlook Express will do nothing at all?

Does Outlook Express only like IE? Something simple not configured I guess...

I still want SlimBrowser to be my default browser...so how can I make it so that when i click a link in a email it will open in Slimbrowser.

I'm running Outlook Express 6 with Windows XP SP3.

When I click on a link in an email message, Internet Explorer fails to open and Outlook Express hangs, and I need to do a ctrl-alt-del to get out of it.

I've checked the problems listed in http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q177054/ but that didn't make any difference, and I've also tried the advice I found elsewhere to go Start - Run REGSVR32 URLMON.DLL and reset Internet Explorer to default settings.

I've also found that the links to Windows Update in the standard windows Start menu don't work either.

I'm using ESET Smart Security 3.0.669.0 but nothing in the firewall log shows no connections blocked, and I disabled all protection options when trying to get this problem solved and it made no difference.

Help would be appreciated. Thanks

Windows XP Prof; I use Internet Explorer 7 and Outlook Express 6. A few days ago I uninstalled Mozilla Firefox. I could not delete it from Control Panel-Add/Remove programs. I deleted the main program and all folders that had the word Firefox in it.

Since then, if I click on a blue URL in a received email in Outlook Express, nothing happens. For example, when I received my registration email to this forum, I had to copy and paste the URL into Internet Explorer.

I reinstalled Internet Explorer 7 but that did not help. I think I deleted Foxfire on Feb 5, 2007. I tried Norton Goback a few days later, but that did not "go back" to Feb 5th.

Is it possible that Outlook Express is set up to use Firefox, and now that it is gone, Outlook Express does not know that it should use Internet Explorer? Come to think of it just now, I am pretty sure when I clicked on a URL in a received email, it was Firefox that responded.

A:Solved: clicking on URLs in received emails in Outlook Express does nothing

Just writing to this forum made me think about my problem, and I solved it: Internet Explorer was not the default browser. I guess Firefox had made itself the default browser, and when I deleted Firefox, Internet Explorer did not step up to the plate. I made IE the default and now everything works as it should.

Anyway, I am glad I have discovered this forum, and I shall attempt to become a regular member.

So, folks, no need to respond to my previous post.

Hi Everybody!
I was wondering if I could get some help... I have had Outlook Express for a while, and whenever I end up doing a system recovery or something, my outgoing server either STOPS working, or STARTS working, even though I really change nothing. I have one e-mail address I use, it is under verizon.net. My servers are:

outgoing.verizon.net (i've also tried the other smpt.outgoing.verizon.net (if that's correct)).

Nothing has worked. I can receive e-mails, but whenever I want to send an e-mail, I have to go straight to the verizon.net website, and copy & paste the subject, the e-mail address, and the e-mail itself. Can anybody help? I am really lost, I've looked every where for a solution! I just want some ease in sending my e-mails & receiving them ALL with Outlook Express.

Hi friends~

I'm about ready to pack Outlook Express 6 in and send it to the graveyard. I thought I'd get some help here first.

The strangest thing has been happening. My wife and I each have an account (identity) on the same computer using Outlook Express. I'm starting to get her email in my inbox. I even sent her an email and sure enough it went to my address instead. I right clicked the message I sent to her and then clicked properties/details. The path clearly shows it was destined to her account, yet I'm getting her mail.
-I've done a google search and scoured Microsoft's website. I can't find a single reference to this problem.
-I've called my ISP and they said Outlook Express is malfunctioning but could not be more specific. They said it needs to be repaired and told me to go to the Add/Remove file , highlight Outlook Express and click add/remove. I tried that and it asked me if I was sure I wanted to remove the program. I got nervous and cancelled the procedure because I didn't see anything about "repairing" Outlook Express. I thought I was going to end up removing it completely. I'd like to avoid having to re-install it.
-I went into Tools/accounts/properties to see if something was amiss. The configurations appear correct.

Has anyone experienced this and/or have any suggestions on how to fix this problem?

I did it a long time ago and cannot recall my method.

If you pound google, you will find numerous methods. If one doesn't work, move on to the next. I do recall that it is a hit and miss affair, so be prepared to experiment.

Primary advice: be sure you have multiple copies of your DBX folders and keep one copy of each folder safe and unaltered. Try the various methods you discover on a copy of the DBX folders.

A:Outlook Express mail appeared as Bulk Mail when received

Sounds like they might be suggesting you are sending email to them using CC (carbon copy) with a lot of other address's included. Its generally not good practice to use CC as it exposes all address's to all recipients. If you use BCC (blind carbon copy) the individual recipients do not see who else is getting a copy of the email.

Folks I have read the MS tech notes on how to get Outlook 2003 [I have it via Office 2003 Professional, full install] to import from OE6. It fails under either option: import from "another program" or "Import Internet Mail....". Under the former it is pointed to the correct folder, but fails with Error: Cannot open,.. another program in use" but there's not... I tried copying the folder to a nice clean location on the C: and checked all the properties, nothing interfering, still won't open the folder.
Under the latter option it just doesn't do anything after directing it to the correct folder. Seems to accept the command, closes the window, but does not import anything. No error messages.

Umm.... do MS teams communicate with one another??

Closely related: If I could just get the FOLDERS I had setup it would be a great asset, or if i could just get the ADDRESS book it would help. Do you know how to import *.dbx folders into Outlook 2003? Or the old outlook Express address Book?

A:Outlook 2003 Will Not Import Outlook Express folders, mail, anything

They are written in two different formats that are uncompatible. The Oulook Express has a file sytem totally unique to it.

I had the same problem about 6 weeks ago going from XP to Win7.
I had to transfer address book to notepad and put it into Outlook one at a time. The old mail sits in the old PC.
I have heard you can transfer the OE mail files over to Windows mail or gmail etc. Then transfer files from the new mail server to Outlook.
File system is changed over with the mail transfer- I haven't tried it though.

I did a Google and found this. I didn't find this page six weeks ago.

I need to send an e-mail group list created in Outlook 2002 to a user who has Outlook Express (I think it's ver 5).

I tried exporting it as a .pst file but his computer opened it in Wordpad and garbled everything.

Is it OK to send it as a .pst file? If so, what's the proper way for the user to import the e-mail list onto their computer?

If .pst files aren't the way to go, what is the best export/import process?

I'm trying to duplicate AOL mail's behavior whereby any email message that I read is automatically copied to the saved mail location on my computer, so it remains available even when I'm offline. I want to do this in both Outlook and Outlook Express. I've investigated Mail Rules in both programs, and can't find any rule template that resembles this. Also searched in these forums and tried Microsoft's Outlook support site.

A:How do I auto-save mail in Outlook & Outlook Express?

...I forgot to mention I'm using Outlook or Outlook Express with an IMAP (America Online) account, not POP3. With POP3, all email is already downloaded to my computer, but with IMAP it stays on the server. I can manually copy individual items to my Saved Mail folder, but I want it to happen automatically, triggered by opening/reading the email item.

Using both Outlook and Outlook Express on new HP a1310n system with Windows XP Home, Charter cable internet.

When we originally set up the system two weeks ago, everything was fine; but, just yesterday, we suddenly cannot send mail. Outlook and Outlook Express both indicate successful send and receive; but, no one is receiving our mail Also, when we send mail from ourselves to ourselves, we get a message thet the send was successful but, we do not receive the test mail. We have also checked the mail server through IE and the mail we are sending to ourselves doesn't make it to the server.

Out SMTP and POP settings are correct. I am a tech and I know well what Charter's in and out servers are.

We have uninstalled and deleted the folders for all antivirus, antiadware and antispyware and turned off all firewalls.

Hello Firemission and welcome to the BC HijackThis forum. Unless you know the sender of the email and know that they have sent you an email with an attachment, I would not recommend attempting to open it. Emails can be sent from known recipients whose PC's have been compromised by any number of computer infections running wild on the internet today. That said, you should contact the sender to first confirm that they actually sent the email and then to find out what the attachment is. Even if it is a valid email with a valid attachment, you will need the program which created the attachment to open it up.The HijackThis forum deals exclusively with virus and malware issues. For assistance with email questions I would suggest posting in the Web Browsing/Email and Other Internet Applications forum. The techs there can assist with issues related to those applications.Cheers.OT
