Ethernet and usb not working on startup

Q: Ethernet and usb not working on startup

I dont know if this is in the right section but I am using windows 7 and when i start my computer everything works fine until the windows logon screen when the mouse and keyboard stop working. Both are usb and my ps/2 is working fine. I went into device manager and my ethernet and usb drivers had exclamation points on them and the issue was that they could not start. I disabled and re-enabled all of these and they now work 100% until i restart my computer again then i have to continue the process. Any help would be appreciated thanks!

Preferred Solution: Ethernet and usb not working on startup

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

A: Ethernet and usb not working on startup

once you are on the device manager, right click and uninstall drivers if you have an option, it will be out of the list after that, and re-scan for devices or reboot the PC for Windows to automatically install drivers for USB ports..

I have a linksys model wrt54gl v1.1 and I am using Windows Vista 32bit Home Edition. I have a pc connected to the router directly through an ethernet plus a laptop, 2 iphones and a blackberry that get wireless internet from it. 2 days ago wireless stopped working. The internet on the pc connected to the router by ethernet is still working and the power, WLAN, ethernet, and internet lights are all lit green. The internet and ethernet lights flash when data is being transferred but the the WLAN light is not flashing. I have restored the router to factory default but it is still not working. The phones and laptop are not detecting any wireless network present. Hope you can help.

My Ethernet started malfunctioning recently. My Notebook PC works fine with Ethernet connection at my workplace but recently started malfunctioning at home. The wifi connection is still in order both at home and at my workplace. My PC is Windows 10, i7 processor.

Can you advise how to solve the problem?

I recently had some problems with my on board ethernet where it was locking up my entire system. This was eventually pinned down and I put an SMC PCI Ethernet 10/100 Card into my machine which fixed the problem.

However I've had a different problem ever since. Whenever I boot (or reboot) my computer, the Ethernet connection doesn't work for a good one to two minutes after start up. No amount of attempting to disable/re-enable the connection, or using that Windows Repair My connection thing will fix this and I just have to wait. Windows says it is connected but it doesn't work and then after a mintue or so it says the connection is disconncted, then it reconnects within a second or two and then will it work.

After this the connection is perfectly stable until the next time I start Windows. Also I don't have this problem on my brother's computer which connects to the same 4-port router.

Are there any Windows / software settings I can try changing before I try swapping it out for another Ethernet card?

Most of this probably isn't relevant but I'll list it all anyway...

Hello Techsupporters!

When I boot my computer and load on Windows 7 Ultimate, I get this problem:
First my PC starts searching for an ethernet cable, then says it is disconnected. An exclamation mark in a yellow warning sign follows (down where the connection icon is) and then it all goes back to normal and i can access the internet and LAN. This takes approx. 20-30 seconds to be done.

While this was not a big problem, when I load up on Ubuntu, the notifications go: connected, disconnected, connected, disconnected and so on at irregular timing. And it goes on forever.

I reinstalled the Network Adapted Driver, reset BIOS defaults, but nothing seems to help.
Can you help me locate the issue and fix it?
Thanks in advance?

A:Ethernet cable not recognized at Startup

You might have a dodgy (bad) cable which is causing the problem. Try using a different Ethernet cable and see if this helps, you could also try using a different port on your switch.

I decided to update some of my drivers and decided to start with the Marvel Yukon Ethernet controller. I downloaded the latest version from Marvel which is Prior to installing I uninstalled the old version, and then installed the new. I rebooted and found that I did not have internet connection. I went to Device manager and found that Ethernet Controller #2 had the "!" on it so I did some checking. I went to Properties and found this message :see screenshot
I closed out of device manager and restarted the computer. After restart I had internet connection. I rechecked Device manager and everything was fine. Just to see what would happen I shut down the computer and restarted. After restart I did not have internet connection. I checked device manager and again I got the same message as in the screenshot. Hi guys,
I did something really dumb, clicked on "Uninstall" in Control Panel, of my Atheros AR8152 PCI-E V3.2.

Was actually looking for something else, (an annoying toolbar), and thought that was it. Was only after a second or so, I realized it was the wrong thing, clicked "cancel", window box still asked if it was to be deleted on next start up, and stupidly I clicked "yes".
Obviously I don't want this, can this be reversed?

My ASUS N61Jq laptop worked fine up until last night when I put it into Hibernation mode, as I frequently do.

I started it up again the morning, and the PC simply froze while the desktop was loading. All the icons were able to load, but the right hand side widgets had not yet appeared, and the Wireless network icon was still searching for a network. I tried rebooting several times but it systematically froze shortly after Windows had started loading.

The same problem occured in Safe Mode with Networking. In fact, the freezing always seemed to happen while the system was searching for an Internet network. I have an Atheros AR8131 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller that I updated 3 days ago (driver version and an Atheros AR9285 Wireless Network Adapter (driver version My wi-fi router was on, and my desktop PC was able to connect to it just fine, so the problem didn't seem to come from there.

The computer did work fine in Safe Mode, in which I ran CCleaner, Glary Utilities, performed a full Avast scan and a sfc/SCANNOW: no problem.

I tried disabling various non-system items in the Startup Group: no change.

I have computer that uses Realtek ethernet card connected to Netgear Router...

Everything works fine, no disconnecting and stuff. The only problem I have is that everytime I boot my computer, just before windows starts my realtek ethernet card starts to initialize and look for IP and DHCP..and it takes about 1 minute while it sets itself...

Somewhere long time ago I read that there should be a workaround for this. Instead of letting ethernet card obtain IP automatically (thus making it extremely slow) you can configure IP manually in ethernet card so this way there wouldnt be time consuming detection(initialization)...

If someone could tell me how to solve my problem or give link to sites - Id appreciate it..Already searched google and stuff - did not find anything...Kthx.

All the above looks good. Using as a URL in your browser, you should get a request for the user/password for that router. Once you login, you can go to the WiFi portion, enable it, set the SSID and encryption you desire.

Hi all - I have Win7 Ultimate 64bit and my ethernet pci card DLink DFE-530TX+ (rev F) doesn't recognize the broadband connection on bootup. I have to disable it in the device manager and then re-enable it. Then the broadband connection works.

I have the latest driver, from the DLink site, which is specifically for Win7: (10/12/2009)

I put in the ethernet card as a workaround, because the onboard ethernet device had exactly the same problem. It is a Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller. I got the latest driver from Realtek (7.26.902.2010 - dateed 9/2/2010) but like the DLink, when I first boot up, it does not recogize the broadband internet connection.

I had hoped the PCI card would not experience the same problem -but it does.

Vista Ultimate 64-bit, ASUS Rampage Formula motherboard, USB mouse and keyboard connected in back ports.

Two things happened: Avira antivirus warned me of some threats which I either ignored or deleted. Windows Update had some updates ready (although I'm not sure if it updated).

I turned off my PC for a couple of hours, turned it back on and realized that my USB keyboard was not working on the password screen.

I eventually unplugged it from the back and plugged it into the front, where it worked. However, my USB mouse did not work when plugged into the second front port, nor did it work when plugged into the front port in which the keyboard worked.

I accessed System Restore using my keyboard and restored to one day previously. When it finished, both keyboard and mouse worked, although I got a pop-up message alerting me that the "drivers for your device could not be installed." When I clicked "OK," the mouse stopped working again.

I have checked BIOS and both mouse and keyboard are recognized, so it does not appear to be a hardware issue.

hello, if anyone can help me out, it would be fantastic.

here's the rundown of what's going on with my computer:
I installed these programs that create a virtual drive on your computer (install drivers and all) so that you can burn cds to the image drives. There were three in all, one was called "noteburner" and another called "sharedrm.." the other i dont remember at all but its icon was an ipod looking thing i think.
i uninstalled these programs and restarted my computer
upon restarting computer, the loading of windows lagged for a long time and then eventually the comp would just restart.
i also started getting the blue screen of death (fatal error) here and there.
after some working around with the computer i managed to get it to boot up again to find that i no longer had sound and my ethernet adapter was not working. Also, the drivers for those virtual drive programs were still in my device manager and in the registry.. i manually deleted all of them and everything from my registry with their names. (i contacted their techservs - and they had no idea)
also, it createed a driver in the network adapters tab called "direct parallel" which i deleted raspti.sys and ptlink.sys (it's two driverfiles) manually - everytime i tried to uninstall normally, there was a message that said "cannot unistall, this device may be needed for the computer to boot" - somewhere in the mess of things i ended up reinstalling service pack 2 as... My ethernet connection seems to have suddenly crapped out which has left me using the USB port. But that means I cannot establish my home wireless network.

My ISP troubleshooting help line could not tell me anything beyond it being an ethernet problem.

Any help troubleshooting and re-establishing is much appreciated.

A:Ethernet not working...

"... ethernet connection seems to have suddenly crapped out" implies
1. bad ethernet adapter,
2. bad ethernet cable, or
3. bad something at the other end of the cable.

Can you try another cable?

Can you try something different at the other end of the cable (e.g., if it was a router, try a different LAN port)?

Can you try the same setup but with a different computer?

My ethernet is not working but my wifi on the same computer is working(using wifi to post this). I attached an image of my resource monitor it shows me trying to download. The weird part is sometimes it goes up to my normal speed(32mb/s) for like 4 seconds and then it drops to not working at all and when I try to load a website I have to refresh a few times and pray.

I tried connecting the wire to my laptop (same wire and wall port) and it works fine. I ran malwarebytes and found one threat but the problem was not solved. I ran it again a few more time and it says I don't have anything else.

I have no idea what's (kinda computer noob) going on so any help would help.

I'm having a very similar problem. I can connect wirelessly using my laptop to the internet through my netgear router, but not using my desktop. The desktop is plugged in directly to the router through the ethernet port, but the router light indicating a wired connection isn't lighting up. I've tried installing the router software on the desktop (running winXP), but the installation won't complete as it can't detect the router.

Device manager says that the adaptor is working properly, but the icon in systray says that a network cable is unplugged. I've tried 4 different cables, so I don't think they're to fault.

When I open the command prompt on my desktop and type ipconfig /all:

Ethernet adaptor local area connection:

media state: ...... media disconnected
description:...... SiS900 pci fast ethernet adaptor
physical address:... 00-14-85-6F-AE-05

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

P.s. When I plug my laptop in to the router using the ethernet cable, the router's light comes on, showing that it is connected.

Hello, i have a desktop computer which used to get internet from a secondary router we had. It is a Jensen Scandinavia. One day when i logged onto my computer i noticed i had no internet, and it hasnt returned since that. It shows a yellow exclamition point by the internet icon, and says no internet Access. My secondary router Works fine With everything else than my computer, both wifi and Ethernet. Of all Electronics we have in the house, its only my computer who doesnt work. I have a cable that goes from my main router and to the secondary router, if i stretch that into my room it will allow me to get internet Access, so the problem isnt my main router. My Ethernet port on the computer is blinking green some times aswell, but i get no firm Connection. I also do not have a default Gateway.

Additional info: when my internet stopped working, i looked into my Device manager and found pseudo tunneling Interface With a yellow exclamition mark. I uninstalled it in hope that it would be reinstalled and making my computer work aagain, but it didnt get reinstalled ;(

Ty for the help, much appreciated.

A:Ethernet not working!

The Pseudo Tunneling Interface is for IPv6, which is not used currently for Internet Access. When you right click this yellow flag and Uninstall it , it should not come back.
If you have no other yellow flags in the Device Manager, then to test your internet connection, plug this computer directly into the Main Router rather then the secondary one.
Then follow these instructions Pre-posting Requirements - for both Wired and Wireless Connectivity Issues and paste your ipconfig log in your next post.

Hi there!

I have no experience at all with computers/connection issues, so apologies for my poor use of terminology.

I live in the Bay Area and I have xfinity/Comcast.

Around a week ago, I stopped being able to connect to Ethernet. After troubleshooting, I found that the error was "One or more network protocols are missing" or "Windows Sockets Empty".

I have already tried the following things:
1. Reset my computer / made sure all the cords were plugged in
2. Did a "netsh" in command prompt to reset my IP
3. Gave "Full Control" to everyone in folder 26 in my Registry Editor
4. Did a "netsh" to reset my winsocks
5. Disabled NETBIOS on both wifi/ethernet

I also couldn't find any new drivers...

Each time I tried one of these fixes, I would have ethernet for ~5 minutes after I restarted my computer. Afterwards, it would instantly disconnect me and connect me back to WiFi.
After I tried disabling WiFi, my ethernet connection would still dc, but I would simply have to troubleshoot it, and would work again after restarting my adapter.

Is there any way for me to fix problem for good? My WiFi cuts off really randomly from time to time and that's really frustrating..

If there's anything I missed please let me know and I'll try to provide it!

Thank you so much!

The link that shows up on your post - "I also couldn't find any new drivers..." - If you posted that intentionally, do not use the 'driver updater' program it links to. It's malware. My question would be who is the oem of your computer, and which LAN card make/model?

The HHD's purpose was to be the back-up for the Raid array....too bad i never actually backed anything up! Boy do I regret that now.

This build has been running fine for a few months until now. It was last working about a week ago and it downloaded an update for windows. I posponed the restart for 30 minutes or so to finish up a game I was playing and then shut it down for the night. When I turned it on the next morning, this happened.

I have Updated the BIOS to the most current version, as well as the SSD firmware. No change whatsoever.

I am pretty desperate here trying to avoid formatting BY ALL MEANS POSSIBLE. So, any advice is welcome!

A:BSOD on Startup - Startup Reapir not working

Stop message 0xC000021A Descriptive text: FATAL_SYSTEM_ERROR
Usual cause: The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly.
If you are unable successfully boot into Windows because of the BSOD error, Windows has an option to reload registry information from the last successful boot. To revert to the last successful boot:
1. Reboot the computer.
2. Near the end of the BIOS messages or graphic, but well before anything appears from Windows, press the F8 key. You may only have a few seconds to get the right spot to press F8 before it attempts to go into Windows. If the BIOS complains about a pressed key or asks you to go into BIOS setup, you've pressed F8 too soon (Don't go into BIOS setup).
3. When successful, you should see a black screen with white text "Windows Advanced Options". Use the up or down arrow keys to highlight Last Known Good Configuration and press Enter.

Advanced Boot Options

If you have the Windows 7 installation cd, insert that in computer and boot up with it:
1. Go into the Windows Recovery Environment by selecting the option to repair your Windows at startup.
2. After it has completed the startup repair, click link that says "View Advanced Options for system recovery and support".
3. A list of options appears. click the command prompt and then type chkdsk f//r. Let that run (it may take a while).

I recently had a hard drive failure. After installing a new internal hard drive, formatting and installing XP Home/SP2, I reinstalled all my back up files and tweaks etc. All is lean, mean and secure. However, when I was checking my Device Manager, I noticed the yellow ? next to my Ethernet Controller, which explains why I had to reconnect to my DSL through a USB connection instead of my previous ethernet connection.

In my Ethernet Controller Properties, under the General Tab, it reads as follows:

Device Type: Other Devices
Manufacturer: Unknown
Location: PCl Bus 2, Device 8, Function 0

Under the device status states, "Drivers for this device are not installed (code 28). I tried to reinstall the drivers through the Hardware Update Wizard, but it failed and stated, "Hardware was not installed because the wizard cannot find the necessary software.

I have an Intel Pro 100 M Integrated PCI NIC Card.

Thank you in advance for any for any guidance on this.

A:Ethernet Connection Not Working

did you instal the correct drivers for the device?? - where are you getting them from?
you could delete from device manager and then wait for windows to find and then point to the correct drivers

have you installed your motherboard drivers ??

video drivers
sound drivers

often need installing - with the correct manufactureres drivers

The other day I woke up and found windows 10 installed on my PC, it installed itself overnight without permission. I was confused and reverted back to windows 7 immediately (not that I have anything against windows 10, just I was happy with how my pc was running before).

Now the internet doesn't work, I've tried the troubleshooter and eventually it comes up with "Local Area Connection doesn't have a valid IP configuration". It's set to obtain IP and DNS automatically in my connection properties.

I've tried all the basic things like turning router off for 10+ seconds, restarting computer and replugging in all the ethernet cables on the switch box and router. The internet is working fine on every other device in the house, wireless and wired. It was working fine until the upgrade and rollback from windows 10, which is why I put this thread in windows 7 support instead of networking support.. but maybe it belongs there I'm not sure.

A:Internet not working (Ethernet)

I would start by deleting the Intel network adapter from device manager and deleting any associated drivers. Then reboot.

Download the updated driver for Windows 7 here if Windows doesn't load one on reboot:

Iíve been happily using 2Mb broadband through BT for the last 3-4 months or so, but now Iím trying to set up a network for another 2-3 computers to share it Iím running into trouble. I bought a 30m ethernet cable on ebay (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=6785598902&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1), but the weird thing is that while itíll work fine if itís connecting my computer to the router, it wonít work with any of the other 3 computers in the house Ė their ethernet ports donít light up green and the computers seem unaware its plugged in to them and unable to detect the router.

My computerís 3Com Gigabit NIC card works with it fine, while the Q-Tek card (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=5790017542&rd=1&sspagename=STRK:MEWN:IT&rd=1) I bought wonít work. Neither will the ethernet ports (unknown make offhand) built into the other two computers in the house work with the long 30m cable, but having just about managed to stretch the old short cable I had to one of them that I fitted with the Q-Tek card, it works fine with that.

Is looks like the cable was at fault afterall. Should I just pay for another one and hope that works? Did I buy the wrong sort of cable and if so, what sort should I look for?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions / replies (housemates are getting a bit irritated with the whole thing now so advice would be really useful!)Ö

Hi, so basically I am using a windows 7 computer, and my WiFi doesn't seem to be working. To be exact, my Ethernet cable is working but my wireless isn't... before (a few days ago) it seemed to be working when I restart my computer, or just simply restart my router. But now, when I've tried it about 10 times, the WiFi is still not working :/

Thanks for the help

Two LEDs on an Ethernet port - green and orange (which I'm sure you all know). Lately, I noticed the orange LED is no longer illuminating.

I had to make some disk images in Linux today, so I booted up from a LiveCD - the LED worked from the Linux system.

I've tried restarting, reinstalling the driver (both via Windows Update and from the Realtek site) - neither method fixed it.

The connection still works fine as far as I can tell!

Thanks for any suggestions.

A:Ethernet 'activity' LED not working

Just a quick update:

I've found that switching the duplex mode to 10Mbps (half or full) uses ONLY the orange LED, but any other setting just uses the green one, including 'Auto negotiate'. So it's not like the LED is bust...

Alrighty. A friend of mines internet just stopped working a few nights ago. I went to her dorm and checked her settings and connections, all fine. Tried plugging her PC into her roomates ethernet box thing and it didn't work, tried a different cable and that didn't work either. She has a Dell laptop, it looks kinda old, thats all I really know.

My question is, is there a free diagnostics tool I could burn onto a cd then run on her laptop to see if it can determine the problem? Like I said, it suddenly stopped working aparently, and using the roomates cable/ethernet jack didn't solve anything, so it looks like a hardware problem.

Thanks for any help, I'd love to save her the trouble of paying for someone to look at it.

Edit: I forgot to mention what the PC is saying. Under device manager it shows the ethernet card working normally, but it says its unplugged. I have also deactivated the card, and reactivated it to no avail. Again after changing cables and replugging everything it the PC says a network cable is unplugged, but its not! Thanks

just noticed my Vaio ethernet port isn't working. it says the adaptor is working normally, but when I plug in an ethernet cable is says the cable is not plugged in. I tried it with two different cables that work elsewhere.

I wonder if the laptop ethernet card is faulty?

Wireless is working fine.

Anyone got any ideas to try?

I only ever use it to hard connect the router during setup, so it could have been out of order even before my Win7 to 8.1 upgrade.

A:Ethernet port not working

so it could have been out of order even before my Win7 to 8.1 upgrade.

Probably so if you never bothered to install the LAN drivers after upgrading.
