Solved: PDF DL: Open/Save window returns with Open grayed out

Q: Solved: PDF DL: Open/Save window returns with Open grayed out

A user tries to download a PDF from a government site by selecting a checkbox for the document and hitting Download Document button. The file download box comes up with "Downloading file... Open/Save/Cancel". When she hits Open, the box dismisses and the download progress box appears. Almost immediately, however, the file download box reappears but this time Open is grayed out, forcing the user to save it before it will be downloaded and opened. On any other computer in the office, the file will open right up. I have checked the internet settings and they seem correct. What would cause this to happen just to this one user? Or, what can I do to fix it?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hello All,

I don't really know how to describe my pc problem. In the grand scheme of things it's a small issue but it's very irritating.

I believe it's all the same thing. One example, is uploading files i.e. photos to photobucket, deviant art, face book.... music files to mediafire etc.
Uploading files to the internet ... so the sites direct you to the relevant pages and normally you'd click browse file to select the file you want to upload and a window would open so you could browse to select the file and subsequently upload. When I click the browse button there is also a slight flicker as if the window opens and closes very quickly and no upload window?!?

Similar when I right click on a link/picture and select "Save As" there is also a slight flicker as if the window opens and closes very quickly. And no window to select were you want the file downloaded to...

I use google chrome as my main browser... but the same thing happens with Internet Explorer and Firefox.

I've ran Malwarebyes Anti-Malware and the report came back clear. I have Norton 360 and that's come back clear. Any ideas what's going on? Before I throw my laptop out the window?

Many Thanks
Mike

Not sure what happened. The Visio files were opening just fine a few minutes ago, and now when I try to open them, IE prompts me continuously for "Open, Save, Save as." I tried all three options for the fun of it and IE still prompts every time.
Tried opening them from a remote PC and they open just fine. Can't do anything with them on my PC except view them in Visio itself.
I've tried resetting IE settings. Uninstalling IE 11 and going down to 10. Nothing in event viewer for IE.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Hello,

For some reason my Internet Explorer 11 has stopped letting my use the Add to Favorites option. Clicking on it does nothing, no save, no message. Also, I am unable to get the browser to open a new window when right clicking on a link, again it does nothing, no message, no new window.

- I've run sfc scannow from the admin prompt and no violations came up
- I do have a Links folder in C:\User\user but did try making a new one which was merged with the existing folder
- I have done a reset of Internet Explorer
- I ran regsvr with
•Urlmon.dll
•Mshtml.dll - failed entry point not found
•Actxprxy.dll
•Oleaut32.dll
•Shell32.dll
•Shdocvw.dll - failed entry point not found

- I can not do a system restore because the available restore points are not at a time when the program was working properly.

I could really use some more suggestions.

Thanks

The other day I noticed that all of the icons and previews (for images) were not showing when I am in a program and open a window for Save As../Open, etc. This happens in all programs. Attached is an example.

When I open the file location from within my computer all icons and previews work.

Things I have tried so far:

Control Panel>Advanced System Settings>Performance Settings - Made sure Show Thumbnails instead of icons is check.

Going through every folder and making sure in folder options that always show icons, never thumbnails was unchecked. I have tried numerous different scenarios.

I even went and installed custom icons. That is why it now shows some icons. Before it showed no icons at all.

I am pretty knowledgeable when it comes to settings in windows and have been running Windows 7 since it came out. If anybody knows anything else I can try, please let me know.

Thanks

You could try the following;

To fix this problem, follow these steps:
Close all open windows if a Close Open Programs Interaction dialog box is displayed.
Verify the Max Cached Icons registry value that locates in the following registry subkey equals to 4096:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer
Delete IconCache.db that locates in the following path:
Windows XP - %userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data
Windows Vista or Windows 7 - %userprofile%\AppData\Local.

Hi All,

I work on a web application that has Excel and Word documents in it.

At the moment when a user opens these documents in IE9 they get presented with a dialog box asking:

What do you want to do with "filename"?

The user is presented with Open, Save and Save As as the options.

Unlike previous versions of IE there is no check box to tick to remember the user's choice so it comes up every time.

I really need to get rid to this box. Does anyone know how to disable it?

Thanks

This is a weird problem I've not seen before and I could use some help or someone to point me in the right direction. I searched the forum with no luck.
I'm assuming this is an issue related only to my machine and not an IE7 problem.
:-(

When I click on this link (or one in similar format on the same page), the new window will initially begin to open. Then the new browser instance is redirected to another site....which seems fine & the page switches to the new address, then suddenly the window disappears and the "File Download-Security Warning" box appears and asks if I want to save the file or find a program online to open it with:
Program Name: browserRedirect
Type: Unknown File Type
From: ax.phobos.apple.com.edgesuite.net

Clicking on "Find" takes me to the Windows File Association web page where it says that windows does not recognize this MIME type.

Here's the actual link:
//click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/stat?id=DKrkLM3KmGA&offerid=78941&type=3&subid=0&tmpid=1826&RD_PARM1=http%253A%252F%252Fphobos.apple.com%252FWebObjects%252FMZStore.woa%252Fwa%252FviewAlbum%253Fi%253D27672884%2526id%253D27672964%2526s%253D143441%2526partnerId%253D30
If I need to register a file type, I don't where to start! I scrolled through all the file types in My Computer and honestly, I'm at a loss as to what to do.
Could this be related to some corrupted mime file or something?

Hi

Win7 Ultimate

I hope I can explain this clearly.

When I go to an Open or Save dialog box in any application and I click on any folder any where in Windows outside of the application, the Save as... or Open dialog for that application switches to that folder, which is great feature because it quickly enables me to change the location in those dialogs. It's not currently working.

My question is, where is the setting the enables or disables that functionality.

Hello lawrance,
Generally this is my full I.E. Reset directions >>
This should be done with Internet Explorer open (even if you are having problems with it), not Firefox / Chrome or another browser.

Click Tools or the Gear icon at the top of the browser > Go down the list to click on Internet Options > Go across to the last tab that should be Advanced >  Click on Advanced and then Reset (near the bottom) > You should get a Confirm box pop up > Tick Delete Personal Settings and now Reset.
This last part may be where the infection changed things -

While there > Go back to Connections Tab, and down to LAN Settings. Open this and check that the only box ticked is Automatically Detect Settings, and untick any others. Click OK >Apply if you changed anything and OK again.

Back to the General Tab and make sure your Home Page is entered correctly in the box. Re-set it if not, clock Apply and OK to close out
Once the settings have all been reset, Close that box. Close any other open boxes. Now close I.E. and Reboot your computer.

Let us know if this helped -

Hi

We have a site which contains a csv export file. We know this site works fine - it does for all other users and has done for ages. When you click the link, you get the usual 'open' or 'save' dialog box. However we have one user, who receives an error when clicking on 'open'. (see attached image). Microsft Excel has already loaded up in the background.
It may be worth mentioning that this is on an https site.

I noticed this is the same problem as found at: http://www.techsupportforum.com/f56/...e6-336294.html

Has anyone got any thoughts/suggestions?

Ok. I'm on XP, am using a network connection to the internet, with either Cable or DSL (I can't remember), My compy is a Laptop (Gateway), and the only things that I download are from OverClockedRemix, a videogame music site. (for the record, it's cool)

I would like to be able to open a new browser window in Firefox which would start at the identical location to the one that's open rather than opening at the home page.

In IE, File / New / Window works well for this purpose, and then if you wanted it to start at the Home Page, you could just run Explorer a second time.

It gives the flexibility of going off on other trails with the additional window, but still having the original window open. I'm not crazy about tabs which take up extra space in the browsing window. However, is there even a way to open a new tab at the same location as the current window? Maybe I'm missing the joy of tabs somehow and am stuck in my old way of thinking. Still, I would like to know if what I want is possible.

Thanks.

A:[SOLVED] Open new browse window at same location as current window

Hi I don't think that is an option but I understand what your after and this is the way I do it with keyboard short cuts of

Ctrl + C = copy (While holding down Ctrl tap the C key once)
Ctrl + V = paste
Ctrl + T = new tab
Ctrl + N = New page

OK starting with tabs which I think is the best thing since sliced bread. You have the page open that you want to start with go up to the URL at the top of the page (do it with this page) click only once on the URL this will highlight it or if you like to say select it.

Now to copy the URL Ctrl + C your computer will remember this link until you either copy something else or you shut down the computer.

Now we open a new tab Ctrl + T a new blank tab will open and the URL location is blank but with the cursor already in it so we paste the URL there by Ctrl + V and tap the enter key and you have the duplicate page

Now working with a new page there is just a couple of small differences.

You have the page open that you want to start with go up to the URL at the top of the page (once again do it with this page) click only once on the URL this will highlight it or if you like to say select it.

Now we open a new page with Ctrl + N a new page will open but the difference is it will not be blank it will be your home page so as there is already a URL that we want to get rid of. The simple way is to once again click on it only once to select it then paste the saved URL by Ctrl + V and tap the enter key and ... Read more

Hey everyone.

Running Windows XP SP2 and I have just noticed in the couple days, that whenever I use an open/save as dialog box (to open/save a song in from firefox, to send a file in messenger etc), all the files are getting listed and arranged by name in reverse order (z-a).
They were always getting displayed by name in the right order, which I assume is the default, until recently.
Any idea on how I could get it back that way? I know it is a minor issue, but it has really decreased the speed with which I look through my system.
I've tried arranging the icons by name, but it never seems to save.

This has just started and is very annoying.

It's a laptop and there are quite a few shortcuts in My Network Neighbourhood pointing to network drives when I'm in work. However this hasn't given me a problem before and none of them are mapped.

I did use a web based storage site and it downloaded an application to synchronise a folder with the web folder.......there was a mapped drive I think but I uninstalled the application and that also deleted the mapped drive. How can I find out what's slowing things down as the computer is almost unusable.

Not sure what happened, but starting this afternoon, Explorer 9 (released version via automatic update) will not open a link in a new tab, nor will it open that line into a new explorer window.

Looked at multiple complaints and fixes for this, none worked (including the scripts).

What happened today: recent automatic windows 7 update to "allow further updates", I used firefox for the first time - note did not set it as the default, there was a java update and an adobe update.

This machine is windows 7 sp1, completely updated 64bit home premium system.

Turned off all the add ons, restarted - didn't fix it. Tried the script for the same problem, that didn't work. All the resetting has done, is removed the tool bars I like to use and it still doesn't work.

Would like to leave explorer 9 as the default, but this is driving me nuts. (already can't use it for some sites due to the way their developers coded page popups - use safari for those)

Hi guys,

I'm on WinXP SP2 and yesterday for some reason IE7 started showing some abnormal behavior. If you click the add to favorites icon in the toolbar and then click Add to favorites, nothing happens. Yet if you right click on the webpage and do add to favorites it works. Also if you click a link that opens in a new window, nothing happens. If you right click on a link and do open in new window, nothing happens. If you right click and do open in a new tab, the new tab is created but it just stays on "Connecting..." and never loads the page. Firefox works correctly for all of these functions.

Also the explorer.exe process has been freezing when doing routine copying/pasting of files in Windows Explorer.

I figured it was some sort of spyware but Spybot didn't pick up anything and I didn't notice anything abnormal in my processes or startup. Any ideas?

Thanks,
Justin

Hello. I have no idea what's wrong with my computer, so I am not sure what info is relevent. So I'll tell you everything. I downloaded itunes and then all of a sudden I noticed a virus, (no idea if its from itunes but I doubt it). There was a program digused as a windows program telling me that every application on my cpu had a virus. It told me there was something wrong with mcafee and I stupidly got rid of it. Next it said there was something wrong with firefox. That's when I knew it was a virus. My search engines were not working, task manager wouldn't work, system restore failed, and I couldn't download anything. So I started my cpu in safe mode with networking. I downloaded malware bytes, hijackthis, and ad aware bc they have all worked for me before. I used them all. I know I'm not supposed to delete everything in hijackthis, but I did. I restarted the computer and the virus was gone (as far as I know). But when I click on any desktop icon, an "open with" window appears. I have a C++ runtime error... when I try to enter "add/remove programs" I see "c:\WINDOWS\system32\rundll32.exe Application not found" and when I try to use task manager it says "task manager has been disabeled by your administrator". I restored everything I deleted with hijackthis, because I figured that I deleted something important. I had no luck with that. I used malwarebytes again. Everything works in safemode, everythin... Hi:

When I use my IE8 to something like http://myurl/test.txt, IE automatically opens the file in the browser. How can I make it so that IE asks my user to choose either save or open? I have control over the file extension so if needed, I can make it so that it is http://myurl/test.abc in order to make IE to ask, but when I tried that, IE still opens the file in the browser. I confirmed .abc is not a known file extension on my Windows 7 machine. The content of the file is text.

I do not want my users to open and see the content of the file as it is a data file and meaningless to the user. I just want them to save it on their local machine and then use a program to access it.

There seems to be some answer on this for IE before 8, but there is no more option to force IE8 to give me the option to download.

Any help?

A:How to force IE8 and later to always ask for to save or open instead of always open

I'm currently on an old machine, so I don't know how it will go on Windows 7, but in HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT, if you scroll past the large types of files, where the alphabet starts again, scroll to "exefile" and in Edit Flags, change the D value ending to 00 00.

I am having trouble using Internet Explorer to browse the web. When I start IE, it tries to load the homepage, but instead of loading the page, it asks where I want to save the file.

I have tried to stop loading the homepage before it gets to that point, and asked it to load other sites (Google, Yahoo, etc.). The result is always a save dialogue.

This is not an internet access issue because Safari and Firefox both work fine.

Other things I've tried:
- Tried to load a web page from Windows Explorer. Ended up with the same dialogue box.
- Tried to reset Internet Options through Control Panel. Can't even get Internet Options to open.
- Tried re-downloading IE8 and re-installing. Didn't fix the problem.
- Updated my virus protection software, and it removed some trojan horses. Restarted the computer, but the problem persists.

Computer information: MacBook Pro, with the latest OS X and all the software updates installed, running the latest version of Parallels Desktop for Mac, running Windows XP SP2 with the latest software updates, running Internet Explorer 8.

Please help.

I’m running Excel 2010 on both my work & home computers. I have around 30 macros stored in my Personal.xlsb file. Occasionally, I’ll modify a macro at work and, to be able to have all my work macros available to me on my home PC, I’ll attach the updated Personal.xlsb file to an email to myself at home. I then drag the file to the desktop, open it and attempt to save it in the appropriate XLSTART folder on my home PC.
At work, I’m using Office with Windows XP Professional; at home, I’m using it with Windows 7 Home edition.
The Problem: When I attempt to ‘save’ the new macro file on my personal PC, or indeed if I actually modify a macro on my personal PC and attempt to save it (done via VBA), I’m prevented from doing so for some security reason and get a message that I should save it under a different name and move it to the XLSTART folder. Normally, when I do this (though it’s sort of a pain because of ‘7’s file structure), I have no problems afterward. Most recently, however, Excel launches with Personal.xlsb ‘Unhidden’. I’ve tried several things to get it to remain hidden without success.
Any ideas what’s wrong? How to overcome? Or for that matter, why I can't save the modified file directly to \XLSTART?

A:Solved: Personal.xlsb not hidden on open/can't save

Pls use explorer to copy and paste the file, not in VBA when excel is open.
Cos when excel is open Personal.xls is in use.
Also check that XLSTART is trusted in Trusted Location.

Hello

I first must say that this is a great site. I am glad my friend sent me the link.
Ok my problem is this: When surfing the internet and clicking links that would normally open in a new window, all that pops up is an IE shell. If I right click on a link to open in new window the same thing happens. If I click stop and the Reload the page will come up. BUT most of the sites I go to have pop-up windows that don't have the buttons at the top.

I have been told that i probably have a trojan or spybot messing with my pc. So I ran AVG anti-virus and Norton anti-virus and both came up clean.

I ran Adaware (newest version) and it said I was clean. I also ran Spybot search and destroy. It said I had Vbouncer on my pc and it needed to run spybot on next start-up. Next start-up the problem could net be fixed. I searched for the .txt and .exe files for vbouncer and the search came up empty. Should I be worried?

OK as for the "open in new window" problem. I went to microsoft.com and when to there forums and help guides. all of their recommendations say to reinstall certains .dll files. Which I did and the problem is still there. I went to un-install IE and it said I could try to fix problems. I said OK and it said that noting was wrong. I didn't believe them so I un-installed it anyway and reinstalled a fresh downloaded version from microsoft. I still have the problem.

So now I am starting to think it is something else. Could it be the vbouncer bot that Sear... Read more

Ok does anyone know why I can't open more than 1 window at a time? My pc just started doing this. For example, I play Runescape and I would have the actual game up but when I try to open another window to search something on yahoo it's closing down my game and opening Yahoo there instead of just opening another page for me to search seperately!

I am running XP with IE6, (with all the updates) but also had the same problem with W2k with IE6 and IE 5.5. When I'm in IE and attempt to click on a hyperlink where a new window should open it doesn't. All I get is an internal beep with no error message. I have tried just about every fix I have come accross including registering the following dll files among others from the run command:
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
I have tried replacing the oleaut32.dll file with an older version, and checking the usual registry settings. Right clicking the link to open in new window just produces the same thing. I have repaired and reinstalled IE and absolutely nothing has worked. The best I can do at this point is to hold the Control key when clicking on the link and the new window opens fine, but that becomes quite irritating real quick considering how much time I spend on the web. If anyone has any other suggestions, I would appreciate it. Thank you.
