Q: Email was hacked-contacts in my address book were sent spam email

Hi guys,

'Boopme' had me run MiniToolBox and he wrote that he found "errors and other issues" and he bumped me to this thread.

Norton now seems to be removed and the restart was successful w/ out a restore.

This is what I wrote in under the from "Am I infected?" thread;

Been having problems with my laptop running Vista Home premium svc pack2.
One day, a month ago, Norton was not updating properly. Upon the next boot-up windows would not start and I was forced to restart in safe mode with a system restore. This was successful but Norton Security Suite was still not updating properly.
Since then, on a few occasions, I have attempted to uninstall Norton without success thru the program uninstaler. Norton is unresponsive. I even got the Norton rep. to do a remote deletion of all registry files of Norton. But they all returned after the reboot of my PC because windows would not open and I had to start-up thru system restore.
Since then my yahoo email been hacked and spam sent to the contacts of my address book.
I know I got something but I don't know what.. Can anyone take a stab at what I might need to do?
Thanks,
Brian

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Greetings Brian and to BleepingComputer's Virus/Trojan/Spyware/Malware Removal forum. My name is Oh My! and I am here to help you! Now that we are "friends" please call me Gary.===================================================Ground Rules:First, I would like to inform you that most of us here at Bleeping Computer offer our expert assistance out of the goodness of our hearts. Please try to match our commitment to you with your patience toward us. If this was easy we would never have met. Please do not run any tools or take any steps other than those I will provide for you while we work on your computer together. I need to be certain about the state of your computer in order to provide appropriate and effective steps for you to take. Most often "well intentioned" (and usually panic driven!) independent efforts can make things much worse for both of us. If at any point you would prefer to take your own steps please let me know, I will not be offended. I would be happy to focus on the many others who are waiting in line for assistance. Please perform all steps in the order they are listed in each set of instructions. Some steps may be a bit complicated. If things are not clear, be sure to stop and let me know. We need to work on this together with confidence. Please copy and paste all logs into your post unless directed otherwise. Please do not re-run any programs I suggest. If you encounter problems simply stop and tell me about it.When you post your reply, do not use the button but use the button instead. In the upper right hand corner of the topic you will see the button. Click on this then choose Immediate E-Mail notification and then Proceed and you will be sent an email once I have posted a response. If you do not reply to your topic after 5 days we assume it has been abandoned and I will close it.When your computer is clean I will alert you of such. I will also provide for you detailed information about how you can combat future infections.I would like to remind you to make no further changes to your computer unless I direct you to do so.Now let's get started ===================================================Now that I am assisting you, you can expect that I will be very responsive to your situation. If you are able, I would request you check this thread at least once per day so that we can try to resolve your issues effectively and efficiently. If you are going to be delayed please be considerate and post that information so that I know you are still with me. Unfortunately, there are many people waiting to be assisted and not enough of us at BleepingComputer to go around. I appreciate your understanding and diligence.Thank you for your patience thus far. Please allow me some time to review the information you have provided and I will reply as soon as possible.

This is very embarassing, as it's an ad for "male" pills and some of these people are older family members that don't understand how this can happen. I understand the spoofing and using my email address to cover up the real address, but how do they get all my email contacts? Will this happen again? Is there anything I can do about it?

Hello there!

First of all, MAJOR THANK YOU'S and apologies... you've got a total IT idiot here in this post. I'm telling you, I'm really clueless.

Secondly, the reason for my post! I must have clicked on something in an email (I KNOW, I KNOW! Wrong move, right?!) that captured/hijacked/compromised my email address. For the past several days I've been getting "postmaster delivery notification-delivery has failed" bouncebacks--- going right into my Junk Mail folder. I didn't think much of it... until Verizon suspended my email account this morning for MISUSE. LITTLE OL' ME??? Misuse?? Yup. And I can tell they are FULL OF JUNK because they are trying to sell off-label Viagra and Cialis (BTW, do people really believe that these meds are the real thing? You get what you pay for, people!! A four-hour erection may be the least of your worries! Sorry... I got off topic... )

Anyway, it has probably happened like 125-150 times in the past several days. I have gone in and changed my password (it's SUPER STRONG NOW!) and my security questions, but from what I've read there is probably still something sitting on my computer that will make this happen again. If you can help, I would be so grateful, and even if you can't, thanks for trying! --- Jenn

My hard drive crashed and I have lost a bunch of email and address book contacts that were not backed up. I am running Windows 7 Ultimate on a Quad-core machine with 8G of RAM. I am running Microsoft Office 2003 and I need to retrieve my email and contacts from Outlook. My hard drive is not completely dead. I can try to boot from it, however, it immediately goes into Repair System mode. I have tried numerous times to do a System Restore, but it never succeeds. I continually get the message that "Windows cannot repair this disk automatically". I have tried to boot from the DVD and repair the damaged files, but it just goes into the same Repair System mode, and I get the same message. Hello,I would suggest using a live Linux disk to copy the files containing your Outlook contacts (they are usually .pst files) to a flash drive, then reimport it into Outlook on a healthy machine. Here is how to import contacts into Outlook using .pst files.Hope this helps

I was just in my hotmail account forwarding an e-mail, when I clicked the "To:" button in order to add multiple contacts. Then I noticed something unusual. Firstly, one e-mail address was listed who I had previously blocked and deleted. Secondly, under the "name" of this address was not listed the actual name of the unwanted individual, but my own name which I go by for all my e-mail accounts.

I came out of the e-mail and when to my Contacts list but the blocked/deleted address bearing (weirdly) my own name was nowhere to be found.

I'm really worried and scared now, as this person may have been stalking me online - back in January whilst online I was suddenly told that I had "logged in on another computer", when I had not, and when I logged back in and changed my password, under my Profile, all the information such as my date of birth, location, etc, had been changed to read this guy's information. I'm worried that this contact who only showed up when I was trying to forwards an e-mail and nowhere in my contact list, and for some weird reason listed as my own name, is some sort of evidence that I am still being hacked. Back when I knew this guy he did claim to know people who could hack forums, e-mail accounts, and could really mess them up.

HELP!

This morning my msn email account had letters from family letting me know that my msn address has been sending emails from my account that contain malicious links. When that family member clicked on the link it started downloading and could not be stopped until she used control/alt/delete to shut off the computer.

Yesterday I had just opened an email account with Gmail and imported my address book. Is this related? Or maybe, is this problem tied to when the gaming system PS3 had its data hacked a few months back--personal data areas were hacked that included email, credit cards, and passwords, etc.? Either way, I need to find where the problem is and fix it.

I went to MSN Live solutions center, downloaded and ran their recommended tool to locate problems--a quick scan found nothing. I am running Nortons Antivirus that came with my Qwest MSN account. My main computer is running XP Media edition, 32 bit, with service pack 3.

Please help me locate the trouble and fix this. I have sent a warning email to my whole address book from my new Gmail account to hopefully prevent others from getting this.

A:MSN email address book hacked, sending malicious links

Update--so far MSN says it sounds like a virus, but nothing was found. We reset the computer to an earlier date, about 8 days earlier, and then Norton's wouldn't run. It had 3 error codes; 3043,1 3040,20011 and 3040,20063. Nortons Fix it didn't work on these codes and after following their recomendations, it still didn't work. Finally uninstalled Nortons and reinstalled. Ran quick scan, found 8 small problems and it fixed those. Ran again as full scan, found 4 more concerns and automatically repaired those as well.

Ran Microsoft Safety Scanner for full scan- nothing found. Ran SpyBot search and destroy--nothing found.

Talked to Qwest, because they were the number Norton's sent me too (Qwest provides my DSL). Qwest took the info and looked at my email account. They noticed the virus links all end in /world.html and many have more in common like modules/Search/world.html Qwest is looking into that, but who knows if they will find where this started? Qwest did say that copies of email sent from my MSN account were being sent to another account, my husband's email. We checked his account- non of my emails are there, except the spam email with the virus link.

This makes me worry--is someone intercepting my email? Maybe I didn't understand. My husband's email is on my account as an alternate in case something happens.
I have not had a chance to contact Gmail yet. It seems like more than a little bit of a coincindence that my ... Read more

Running Win 7 .  Opened spam email by mistake and email account hacked. Acct locked by server after 1600 email sent. Account has been recovered.  I ran full scan with Microsoft Essentials and Malwarbytes and both clean.  Then I did a full scan with Kapersky and it showed 1 malware  of Trojan.JS.Agent.cfl located on my external harddrive in my backup files location and possibly 2 other locations on the report.  I have pdf ofKapersky report if want to see.
I also ran AVG 2015 and it was clean.

Not sure if I should just delete the backup files from my external hard drive.
What other scans can I do to make sure everything is OK?? - I have not noticed anything unusual with computer yet but want to ease my mind.

For one reason or another he had un-installed the email client and now he doesn't have any access to his emails or address book. I know nothing about Netscape because I haven't used it in like, years.

Is there anyway to obtain the emails or the address book from the Netscape email application after it is un-installed?

Thanks.

Webroot antivirus has not detected any virus or malware on my computer. What should I do? Do I need to close the att.net email account?

Hi everyone. A few days ago I got a mailerdamon failure notice. I looked and it was a link sent out to a bunch of my contacts....I've changed my password about 4 times, and it just happened again today. I'm changing my password from another computer btw. When I look in my sent folder, it doesn't have the virus email as one that's been sent. I just downloaded Avira Antivirus, and it says its blocking a site from connecting to my computer, it scanned and found two GEN/pwd.zip virus and quarantined them. I'm also getting a DEP error on IE when I try to get on the net.

Worth noting, the past few days I was on another forum do to my computer trying to connect to "pinball corp". I was using malwarebytes at that time, which I've since uninstalled because Avira says it might conflict with it. We went through all the malware removal procedures, and when I tried to run TFC.exe, my computer froze. So I hardbooted it. When it came back on I couldn't run any programs, and my wireless network driver was uninstalled. I was able to delete a lot of programs from my startup folder that I wasn't using, and when I restarted I could run programs again.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hello! I'm a (very) long time lurker of this site but recently decided to join. I've had my Windows 8.1 Toshiba Satellite laptop for a bit over a month. About 2 weeks into ownership I started receiving spam emails in my msn account, the one I use to sign into the laptop. These mails are sometimes from me, although I have checked my sent mail and there isn't anything there I haven't personally sent. I signed into a different email account and that one was spammed too, until I signed out.

I access the internet from my phone and my desktop pc (Windows 7). I wasn't sure where the issue was coming from so I turned off the desktop but the problem persisted. I did a system restore on the I ran AntiMalwarebytes, CCleaner, and my antivirus programs which all came back clean, but the problem is still here.

I've factory restored three times, completely reformatted the drive twice and I still have the problem. I installed Windows 10 Preview but I didn't receive any spam for the hours I had it running. I reinstalled my OEM version of 8.1 and within 2 hours the spam emails started. The last time, I hadn't even installed my firewall and antivirus program when the spam email started. I also noticed that my OneDrive says the last time the files were synced was in 1969.

Having the laptop in airplane mode or shut off is the only way I don't receive spam.

I think I have asked this before. I am getting so much spam email im sick of deleting it all! These fat heads who send it to me I wish they would stop.

Some of the emails say "Your date has been approved with Jenn" Then will say my husband is away for a week so if the first date goes well we will try another.

Come talk to jean and see her body at bla bla website.

I get so many others too. Partsolver and towel direct?? I now have between my two computers almost 200 unread of spam emails and some thats not spam. It takes forver to go through and delete them all.

Ive been told not to hit unsubscribe but sometimes it helps. They say then they know your email is valid. Well they must or they would cease to email me so whats it going to matter to unsubscribe?

Ive even tried to "bounce to sender" but nothing works! Is there any way to block emails from these people? Or not allow them on my server? A auto bounce before they even come on my pc?

Maybe I should just ask my ISP I dont know. I thought id ask one last time.

A:I get lots of spam email to my email address

There are usually two places where SPAM filtres can be effective. The most obvious is at your ISP's Mailbox; because how ISPs handle the spam filter vary, I can give no explicit instructions, although their on-line help section generally will provide those.
The second place is at your Email Client on your computer. FF/Mozilla both include teachable Spam filters that you can use to segregate legitimate mail from the gunk.

The best place to stop SPAM is to be extremely careful about your Email Address. It would be a wise step to have one Email Address for friends, family, and trusted people, and a "throwaway" Email address (s) for on-line registrations, Ebay, or other public places. Once these addresses become, as they will, clogged with SPAM, you can simply delete them and create new addresses, beginning the process over again.

Regards,
John

Hi,

Please do the following

Refer to the ComboFix User's Guide
Download ComboFix from one of these locations:

Link 1
Link 2

* IMPORTANT !!! Place ComboFix.exe on your Desktop
Disable your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications, usually via a right click on the System Tray icon. They may otherwise interfere with ComboFix.
You can get help on disabling your protection programs here
Double click on ComboFix.exe & follow the prompts.
Your desktop may go blank. This is normal. It will return when ComboFix is done. ComboFix may reboot your machine. This is normal.
When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Post that log in your next reply

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window whilst it's running. That may cause it to stall.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ensure your AntiVirus and AntiSpyware applications are re-enabled.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
NOTE: If you encounter a message "illegal operation attempted on registry key that has been marked for deletion" and no programs will run - please just reboot and that will resolve that error.

Hi,

I keep receiving junk emails, however these particular ones are coming through as my current email contacts (friends/family).

I dont want to delete any of these contacts of course, but im getting up to 10 every day from the same address.

What could be the solution to this?

Many thanks

A:Spam sent as email contacts

What e-mail program are you using (name and version)? What e-mail provider are you using? When you say they are from various friends and family, but all have the "same address" what exactly do you mean? Do you mean the same TCP/IP address? How are they showing up as different people but all with the same address - I don't understand what you mean.

Thanks!

I received an email from a friend (my address was in a long list of addresses in the 'To' field) which was obvious spam, trying to collect something from me. I'm not sure what exactly since they already had my email address. I didn't stick around on their site long enough to read the whole form. And I ended up having to wipe out my cache files (i use mozilla) just to be free of them. But I emailed him asking if he sent it out. He had not. Someone obviously was able to send out an email to everyone in his contact list. My question is this: How serious is this? This guy is kind of all thumbs on his computer so I don't want to put him through all kinds of changes if its not really necessary. One website said he should report this to Yahoo, to his local police dept and to the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Its a lot of stuff to do for some poor guy who doesn't know a lot about computers. I don't want to seem like an alarmist, but I don't want to leave this hanging if its really a real problem.

Hey TSG, someone is screwing with my mum's email account and I'd like some advice.

Got a call from a friend saying they'd recieved dodgey e-mail so I opened up her sent messages, and sure enough there was a load of crap sent to all her contacts advertising 'Rob Buy', a dodgey looking ebay clone.

She doesn't use the computer much and doesn't do anything you'd expect to bring virus contact and never opens spam. I did a virus sweep which found nothing, so I'm not guessing someone hacked in and sent the messages.

The fact they're still in the sent messages folder suggests it's a lazy human and not a bot (to me at least, but I don't know much about this field).

So, I'm wondering what you'd reccomend doing and also if there's anyway to get the IP address from which the e-mail were actually sent?

I changed the password on it earlier, but I've just logged in and there's another Nigerian-esq bit of spam gone out since the change... What to do?

Please help, it's bloody demorlising to think someones hijacking my mum's e-mail for spam.

Oh, it's a Hotmail.co.uk account btw - the password was admittedly very easy.

I use IE 8.0 primarily for browsing, but also have FireFox installed and use it occasionally.

I have Webroot SpySweeper (provided free with MSN) set up with the default shields turned on. I just ran a scan that turned up nothing.

I have Advanced System Care Pro on subscription and just ran a deep scan that turned up nothing.

For about two months or so I have noticed my hard drive is occasionally running hard (it's noisy) when I am not doing anything that should be running the HD. I have tried looking at the processes running with Task Manager but don't see any... Read more

A:My Email Account Hacked? It just spammed all my contacts

Your computer security and your web based mail may, or may not have anything to do with each other.

Scenario 1. Your computer is infected and someone got access to your Hotmail username and password.
Scenario 2. Your computer is clean, but someone hacked just your Hotmail account.

Whatever the case is, you should post in malware forum to see, if your computer is clean.
Also, in both cases, your Hotmail account has been compromised and you'll need to create new one.

My internet email contacts list has apparently been used to send out spam the other day. I'm not sure how this occured or how to prevent it from happening again. I run MaAfee and Adware quite regulary. I'm not sure if this is an infection or if someone has hackedinto my Y****O account.

I had some old addresses that are no longer valid so that they were kicked back. I am copying that belwo in case that is of use.

My fixes to remedy this is:
1) Change password
2) Delete all contacts except my work email.
3) Run Spybot and Adaware
4) Rescan computer with virus scan (had scan about 2 days prior)

Am I infected with something? I don't know

I have x'd out all of the email addresses that were shown

Thanks for helping out

My mother's gmail account seems to have contracted a virus that sends an email with the subject line '+hi+' to everyone in the contacts book and with the url 'http://sites.google.com/site/s3895yhf56eydya/aovq7a' in the message body. The site appears to be Canadian and is selling vyagra.

I don't think it's likely to have done any harm to the computer itself, and we noticed the problem when she received several failed message emails. The machine we noticed the problem was a mac so I guess that makes it even less likely the virus is affecting the actual computer but obviously it's not great for my Mum to be sending everyone she knows links to vyagra sites and also I don't know if the emails themselves contain the virus and would infect the recipients.

Is it possible to disinfect the account or does one just have to start over with a new one. That would be hugely inconvenient given how long my mother has used this account.

Hi, I don't know how it happened but my Uncle seemed to get his MSN email sending porn spam to some of his contacts. Seeing I can't monitor what he does on the computer there is really noway of knowing how he happened to accomplish this. I ran spyware scans with Superantispyware and Malwarebytes. All it found was cookies and no virus or anything that would lead me to believe he had a virus. I also scanned with AVG and it came up clean. How do you keep a web-based email from sending spam to your contacts under your name? I do know his password is saved. If he changes his password and types it in from now on will that stop it? Thanks.

A:MSN email sending porn spam to some contacts

I believe that sometime last week a lot of MSN/Hotmail accounts were hacked and their contact lists taken over.
I have read that the first thing to do is to change your email address. Personally, I would get a different address and close that one...Perhaps someone else here has a better idea.

Hey guys. A few weeks ago my email sent several spam messages to all my contacts. I changed my password and this stopped. Last week my World Of Warcraft account was hacked. I completely cleaned my pc (as far as i could tell) and changed my passwords for my email address and my Blizzard (WoW) account. Only 4 days after I got my WoW account back I was hacked again. I changed my passwords every day during that 4 day period after the first hacking, but it happened again :S I've attached my HiJackThis log and also my MBAM (MalwareBytes' Anti-Malware) log for you guys to have a look at. i use microsoft outlook for my email accounts
i have two email accounts. to simplify things, we will name them 1 and 2. account 1 gets forwarded to 2.
recently, i started getting advertisements at account 1, weight loss, etc... i checked account 2, which is a gmail account, and none of these emails are forwarded to there, not even in the spam folder.
i therefore thought maybe, my account on my computer was hacked, and somewhere on the computer they are sending these spams, i therefore deleted the account (1), searched all leftovers from that account, and deleted them, and then started the same account in outlook from scratch.
and again, all the above didn't help, i still receive the above spam.
none of my friends reported receiving from my account spam.

let me point put, even though i have many email accounts in outlook, the above is the only one i receive spam, but it was my default email account.
i am not sure if the computer was compromised, or the account.

the question being, is there a way to get rid of these advertisements, and do i have to worry that something else on my computer got compromised.

thanks in advanced.

I have been unable to insert an address from my Yahoo email address book for some time now and I have decided to ask for help.

All I am doing is opening Yahoo mail and trying to compose a new email to send to someone who is already in my contacts. When I click "to:" or "insert address" my address book shows up. But when I place a check mark and try to "insert checked contacts" I go to this address on a blank page: http://us.mc1612.mail.yahoo.com/mc/kioskHandler

I see that this has been asked before but no one had replied and I can't find the answer doing a search.

Can anyone help?

I have Vista Home Premium 32 using Firefox. The version is the latest version of Firefox but this has happened in many previous versions of Firefox. (I was lazy [or in a hurry] and just typed in the address of the entity to which I was communicating as a work around.)

A:Solved: Yahoo email unable to insert address from address book

Concerning my post above: I turned on my older XP computer and I had no problem with inserting an address from the Yahoo! address book.

I compared all my settings in both computers and noticed that I had different settings relating to how pop-ups are handled. XP reminded me that the address book takes the form of a pop-up. On my Vista I had pop-ups opening up (?) in a webpage. That is the page which came up blank. After I have corrected the settings, I no longer have a problem.

I am using Outlook 2003 and run Windows XP.

When I create a new message I begin typing the name of the recipient and I would like it to match up with an address I have in my Outlook contact list. However, it does not read from there. It only seems to look at addresses that I have already sent to in the past. How can I get it to read from the address book? If I click on "TO" or "CC" it brings up another window with a list of addresses from my contact list. From there I can have it pull from the list. I would like to be able to do it withot the extra step.

I have alerted the entire contact list and suggested they not click on the link and delete the message. Many have responded with thanks.

Thus far I have run a Norton scan with only five cookies detected and no viruses. I have also downloaded Malwarebytes' Anti-malware and run both a quick scan and a full scan. No issues were found. What should be my next step?

Because your address is in the BCC field of the email received, so it's not seen due to the custom SMTP email engine that the scammer scumbags use. Only a spoofed one is seen.

Spam is somehow being sent which displays my email address. I know this because:
a) I have had messages returned as undeliverable to addresses I hadn't sent email to.
b) I received a spam message from myself (!)

My OS is XP. I have service pack 2. I run AVG regularly and ad aware and spybot every once in a while. BTW, I'm computer literate, but I don't speak geek, so don't get too technical with me please :)

I contacted my internet service provider after messages I sent to hotmail addresses returned saying, "Reasons for rejection may be related to contect with spam-like characteristics or IP/Domain reputation problems." It turns out that hotmail has blocked all messages from my internet service providers (the biggest, or one of the biggest in my country). This makes me thing that maybe they are infected somehow.

I have changed my internet password and started scanning for threats. The norton online virus scan worked, (showing I had 2 problems, trojan.wimad and adware.memory meter) but the security scan wouldn't run. Also my ad aware shut down mid scan. I ran an ewido online scan. I found a bunch of adware and one trojan. I googled to find out what the trojan was and found that it could be a false positive and erases it could screw up the computer. I erased the adware and left the trojan. I read more on your site and I hope this wasn't a mistake. BTW, not posting on any other site.

I use Yahoo/AT&T for my email. I checked my "sent" folder and that email was not in there. I also right-clicked the address to see if there was a "real" sender in the code, but it was my email address. I used to be able to mouse over a return address and see the real sender. Wish that feature still worked!!!

Just as a precaution, I reset my password, although I really don't think I've been hacked - just impersonated.

Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Hi,

I have a very simple question. At present I'm receiving around 100 spam messages a day, this started this week and they're all being sent as if they were Undeliverable Messages that I've sent, which clearly I haven't.

They're all being sent to my websites domain, but none have my name. All I want to know is can you set up Outlook Express or can I get my host to block any mail that doesn't have my whole email address.

I mean if my email address was [email protected] could I block an email that was sent to [email protected] or would any email forwarded to @myaddres.com come to me regardless of the prefix?

Thanks, damn spammers what is the point, would anyone buy their drugs after recieving 400 emails in 4 days?

Cheers

Neil
