Installing mSATA SSD in Y580

Q: Installing mSATA SSD in Y580

So I just installed a Kingston 120GB mSATA SSD SUV500MS in my Y580. I got an HDD with Windows 10 installed on it. But when I turn it on now, it does not get past the Lenovo splash screen. I cannot even load the BIOS. It says Entering SETUP, but nothing happens then.If I take the SSD out, everything goes back to being normal. Any ideas? Thanks!

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

My original HD is going bad so I decided to buy a new HD and an mSATA SSD. I've read more forums and watched more videos then I would have liked and I still can't find anything that can walk me through this. I want my mSATA to be configured like my original HD with a C: and D: partition and it to be able to run one button recovery and everything else that the original HD was able to do. Then I want the replacement disk HD to be just for storage. My computer did not come with an mSATA originally. It does have Intel Rapid Storage Technology but I can not find RapidTool.exe which some of the forums say is needed.

If your old HD is still operating, you should be able to clone it using the steps shown below.   Be warned that you must clone the whole drive, including all the hidden partitions, and can only resize the Windows Partition or the OKR recovery will not work, so the new m.2 SSD must be large enough to hold the entire contents of all the partitions of your existing HD drive.    Use Windows Drive Manager to view the sizes of the other parititons on your HD> If you need to make room, back up all your data and then delete from the current OS drive partition before cloning. http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/install-m2-ssd-lenovo-t440s Read this thread as well, it points out some important rules that must be followed when cloning so thaat OKR will work afterwards.https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/Lenovo-P-Y-and-Z-series/Enable-onekey-recovery-after-HDD-to-SSD-cloning... Hope that helps, and good luck

I am trying to install an MSATA SSD onto this laptop.  Simply installing the drive and enabling the RST technology results in a "cannot access boot disk" error-type blue screen.  I've managed to get into the intel RST screen by enabling legacy boot and using ctrl-I.  Once there I am only able to create a RAID array. I assumed the system would be set up already to use RST, however that doesn't seem to be the case.  The system will not boot with the MSATA drive installed.  Do I need to set the system into a RAID-0 disk in order to proprely install and use this MSATA disk as a cache on the hard disk?    The drive is a 32 gb drive that uses sata 3.0. Intel RST recognizes and shows the drive and it's capacity, but windows will refuse to boot from the regular disk while it is installed, and the hdd access light does not turn on when I attempt to boot with the MSATA drive installed. Is there a procedure or set of instructions I need to follow in order to get a system that was not set up with the RST technology and did not have the cache at all before?  I have an external hard disk I can back up onto, with enough storage to back up the current disk, if necessary.

I just ordered the Intel 525 120gb and waiting for it to arrive. I won't be cloning my current windows installation and will do a fresh install.

I have Y580 with a 1TB HDD, with all my files + programs etc.. Basically, I want to ask you if I will be doing the installation process right:

1) Install the msata on board.
2) Change the boot sequence in BIOS to boot from the SSD.
3) Install Windows 7 from a USB on the SSD.
4) Boot Windows 7 and install all drivers + apps.

Is the process right? Also I have two questions:
Won't I have two Windows 7 installation? Would that be a problem? Could I uninstall Windows 7 (while keeping my data files on the HDD) before I install 7 on the SSD?
Is their something I should do to enhance the performance of the SSD? Like installing Intel SSD toolbox and rapid technology?

Thanks!

A:Installing Windows 7 on a new mSATA

Unplug the other HD's during install to the SSD.

Have your network LAN driver in the backup so if its not provided you can get online quickly to do all rounds of Important and Optional Windows Updates, after enabling Automatically get recommended drivers and updates for your hardware (Step 3).

Only import drivers still missing in Device Manager after all rounds of Updates are done with reboots, keep Checking for Updates. Device Manager - Finding Unknown Devices - Windows 7 Help Forums

After install plug back in the HD, shrink old WIn7 partition to move the User folders to a new data partition you make, rightclick each User folder to add to the related Library - Include a Folder - Windows 7 Forums, or from the new Win7 you can move to HD the User Folders - Change Default Location - although moving User folders will make the new data partition on HD a System drive required to be included in Win7 backup images.

If there is a IRST driver it will be installed or you can install it from the mobo maker's Support Downloads webpage.

I've used the following article to change my boot disk to mSATA Triple your speed Laptop magazine

EDIT: Win 7 pro / Lenovo T520 Thinkpad / 8GB ram.
I installed the mSATA Intel 525 120GB SATA III
quite a while ago and it's been sitting and doing nothing. I did run Intel tools on it and I also used Macrium to image the original HD and I plonked it down on the new mSATA.
Laptop has been rebooted many times. mSATA seems stable.

I got to the step in the article above where I'm supposed to boot to the mSATA and load easyBCD to change the drive letter.
Last 'successful' step was going into the BIOS and changing the boot option to the SSD.
When I try to boot I get
Autochk program not found, skipping and BSOD.
The BSOD is very quick and unusually short. It looks like 2 or 3 lines only. The laptop then quickly reboots.

The mSATA is MBR and has only one partition.

I have no idea what to do next. Any help would be appreciated.

The good news is that I can still boot to the original HD and Win 7 still works!

EDIT: Apparently this means there is a problem with the boot record.
I loaded the Win 7 disc and tried a system repair. It ran but couldn't repair.
Went into recovery cmd prompt as administrator.

/bootrec rebuilding - found 0 windows installs
/mbr and /fixboot .... both end unsucsefully

ChrisPbass, I always recommend removal or disconnect all other hard disks when installing the OS, it saves a lot of aggravation
and allows the OS to be properly installed and bootable.
I would remove the existing drives and do a re-install on the SSD without any other drives present.

So I just upgraded from the OEM HDD to a Samsung EVO mSATA drive and thought I'd just put a post out here since there are some people that want to know how to do this. The process is very simple. FIRST: I defragmented the hard drive (this step is not required) but i figured i might as well do it. SECOND: Physically installed the mSATA drive in the computer's mini PCI Express slot (this slot is used up if you have a WWAN card, but if you don't, this slot is open/free). If you have the WWAN card, you'll have to remove it. Leave the HDD installed in your computer at this point. THIRD: Using a copy of Acronis TrueImage 2014, I imaged my hard drive to the mSATA drive. Other imaging tools should work, but I have not tried them. Be sure to have the computer boot to the optical drive, and not your old hard drive. Within Acronis, you'll want to use the Clone Drive feature. You can use the Automatic Mode or Manual mode. I would recommend letting Acronis adjust the partition proportionally on its own. FOURTH: After disc imaging is complete. Shut down the computer and remove the HDD from the computer, --or-- reformat it as a blank drive and use it as storage. FIFTH: Adjust the BIOS boot order so that it boots from the mSATA drive. I also switched the BIOS settings so that it would use UEFI first, and then the legacy BIOS. SIXTH: THIS IS IMPORTANT! Boot into Windows and turn off any defragmenting software (including the built-in defragmenter). SSDs do NOT (and should not be) defragmented.... Read more

A:HOW TO: Installing/Migrating to an mSATA SSD drive...

Hi clbtech!I'm running into some issues trying to install a Samsung 850 EVO mSATA 250GB into a W530.  It may have to do with my configuration but I'm getting frustrated. My current configuration is the original 500GB drive split into 2 partitions, C; and D:   C: is the system drive for programs and 100GB currently, the rest of the drive is D: for all my data, libraries ,etc. Windows 10. - currently running Secure Boot UEFI only. Goall is to make the mSATA drive my "System" drive, and then either make the original HDD a single DATA drive or use the newly freed space as a separate partition for ddedicated music storage. I used the Samaung Data Migration tool to clone the C: partition to the new mSATA drive but I seem to be completely unable to make the mSATA drive the boot drive.  I haven't removed the original drive and wonder if that might be causing some issues but if I remove the HDD, I won't have any of the file structure referenced by the system drive including the user libraries. What am I missing or am I going about it all wrong?  Do I need to do something to the original system partition or bybooting from the new drive are C; and D; being renamed toD: & E: so the new drive's not finding the data drive?Any help would be most appreciated.Jeff

I'm thinking of installing a mSATA SSD as the boot drive on my MSI GE60 0NC-498US. I'm reasonably confident that it has the capability to install a SSD (It has a PCIe Slot labeled SSD and is about the right side for one). I'm planning to clone my HDD (Current hard drive) onto it and use it as the boot drive, but looking through the disk manager gives me 2 "mysterious" boot manager/configuration partition stubs (Or I think that's what they are?).
I'm wondering:
1) Will Macrium Reflect Free(Or any other disk cloning tool? I have Macrium installed.) will copy them over (I can't select the stubs?)
2) Will this cause any issues?
3) If possible, any tips or a guide on how to set up the SSD as my boot drive, etc.
4) Any alternatives ? Preferably with as little loss of data as possible, and not having to reinstall windows? I'm not sure if I can even reinstall windows properly, being an OEM and all.
Attached is a screenshot of the disk manager. My guess is that the smaller one is the boot config partition stub thing and the larger one is some sort of windows recovery partition? (I had a data partition instead of what seems to be the standard D:\ recovery partition from OEMs?

Hey
I have inspiron 15r se with 1TB HDD.
I would like to add a mSATA card to my system to be able to use IRST.
Is it possible now?
I am skeptic because I have read online that systems which were not shipped with 32 GB mSATA card, doesn't have mSATA port for later installation.
When I purchased the system at that time dell had the option for adding 32 GB mSATA card in the customization section, but now dell has removed the whole customization section from the website. And in the pre-configured models, there is no option for mSATA card.
Please clear this doubt and if possible post the pictures of the system and the daughter board where mSATA card can be installed.
If you need any further details regarding my system configuration, feel free to ask.
Thanks in advance

A:Installing mSATA card on Inspiron 15R special edition (7520)

Hey everyone!
All those who are willing to buy Dell Inspiron 15R special edition (7520), and would like to upgrade the system with mSATA card manually after making the purchase, must know that there are  two different configurations with which the system is being sold. While on one of these configuration there is an mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number N7JHH) in the system. Whereas on the other configuration there is no mSATA port available on the daughter board (part number MRDMM) present in the system.
Most of the Dell representatives don't have any information in this regard and they are openly stating that mSATA cards are compatible with 7520. Please don't go by their words and ask them specifically if the above mentioned daughter board is present in the system or not. Only a very few of them are stating  "If the system was not ordered with mSATA  card most likely your system daughter board will not have the mSATA slot", that too after days of inquiry.
If you are hoping to upgrade the system with mSATA card, then my advice to you would be to make a prudent decision before purchasing.
Cheers!

My Dell XPS 8500 has an MSATA slot in which I have a 64 gb msata board which acts as the system and boot drive. I have just purchased a 128 gb msata board I want to install in place of the 64gb unit. My system also has a 1 tb main hard drive.
I have tried a system restore DVD and Back/Restore, neither has worked at all. All I want to do is find a way to do a complete copy of the 64gb msata now installed and then replace it with the 128gb unit and copy over all of the data that was on the 64gb one. This way all I have done will be to have more storage available on my system drive, the msata drive.

Any help much appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the SevenForums!

One solution I can suggest to this is to use imaging software to create an image of your current Windows installation. Acronis True Image is one of the popular ones on here, but there are other programs that can do it such as Macrium Reflect.

I'll be getting a new laptop soon and I'm wondering what the differences are between these two SSDs. I'll probably be putting them in a Sager NP9377 from xoticpc.com. Both SSDs cost the same price but the Samsung 850 EVO has 120 GB vs Micron M600's 128 GB (both for $100) or Samsung 850 EVO with 250 GB vs Micron M600 with 256 GB (both for $160). I know it's a small difference but this is my first experience with an SSD so I just want to make sure I make the right decision. I'll be putting the OS on the SSD so what capacity do you recommend? Hi, all, first post here, so bear with me. I've had this Y580 for a few years now, and it's been functioning rather nicely throughout, just with consistently high temperatures. A few days ago, the performance abruptly dropped considerably, and so I checked my temperatures. They were absolutely ridiculous, even for what this thing averages; I was doing around 95 degrees on the GPU, and it was eternally downclocking to 135MHz. I thought it was just a cooling issue at first, and tried everything, but then when playing around in Energy Management, I noticed something really strange. If I hit the dust removal button, the fan wouldn't change in sound at all. In fact, I could barely hear the fan. I opened up the back cover and inspected the fan. While it was running, it was running at a ridiculously low speed, and would not speed up no matter what I was doing. This is a serious issue; have any of you encountered this before? Anyone have good suggestions for how I should go about dealing with this?

Hi ThunderBIrd2678 ,

Welcome to the Community Forums.

Manual cleaning using compressed air can , checking the gears itself if there are strands slowing it down and reapplying thermal paste ensuring contacts are good as initial step.

Uninstalling and reinstalling the energy manager tool from the support site  under power management can help.

Since fan system is still mechanical in nature, as wear and tear may now be affecting its performance, you may decide on replacing it if you have neccessary tools and skills using the manual (page 58) as guide.
Thermal module with fan in item 11 page 78 FRU number as compared the parts look up for the part number .

Hope this helps answering your query.

Hi, so this problem only came in recently but after I try to update windows 10 on my Y580 and tried to power it up the system would not boot. It seems the laptop is running and the keyboard lights are on but the screen itself remains off or black. The first time it has happen I have been able to use the "remove battery" method to where I remove it and re-insert it back in, this has work the first time when I had this issue but when I had to update windows 10 again the issue returned and I have tried the "remove battery" method but to no avail. I was hoping to get some clarity with this issue, thank you.

I'm posting on here after reading many a comment on this issue.  My I have the y580 i7 nVidia 660m 8 g ram system and I can't play games in direct 10/11.  I can play in direct x 9 for the moment it seems.  For the most part when i play Civ 5 in direct 11 it crashes in under 5 mins precisely when the gpu reaches 91 degrees every time.  I'm monitoring the temps with MSI afterburner (not overclocking).  The temp just climps and then bing... shut down.  It use to go higher and run there, but now it seems to shut down there everytime.  Crysis 1 shuts down too a few mins in.  This machine is very frustrating.  Hopefully I can get it to work again.  I WILL NEVER BUY ONE OF THESE AGAIN... ever.  And I do buy computers often.  I will not recommend it to anyone.  In fact I will make sure other people buy different machines.  I don't want to take the thing apart to reapply thermal paste and thus void the warranty.  And I don't want to have it sent away for months on end to have it re-imaged.  This is horse**bleep**.  I can't wait till PS4 or XBox 720 comes out.

Hi, I know there have been numerous threads on this, but each case is slightly different, not to mention that I've tried most of solutions described there and they didn't work. I reinstalled Windows 8 system on my Y580 (using OneKey Recovery). Worked ok after. Then I proceeded to apply all the system updates from Windows Update and some driver updates. After that I restarted the laptop to apply changes and the system stopped booting. The HDD is detected. The boot menu at the beginning only had EFI Network 0 for IPv4 and EFI Network 0 for IPv6 and both failed boot. Later the Windows Boot manager appeared at the top but it also fails each time. After the failed boot it then proceeds to show the OneKey Recovery screen again. When I use it, it works, but after reinstallation it's the same - failed boot and OneKey recovery. When I use a bootable USB installation of Win 8.1 (there's none for Win 8 apparently) and try to repair/reinstall etc. that way, I get a message that the disk where Windows is installed is blocked. Any suggestions?

In my understanding "optimus" turn off the nVidia GPU completely. I have been always plugged I didn't pay a lot attention to this but lately. Tour out that plugged or on battery the GPU is always a 135/405 idle, other ways is a 835/2500 and 950/2500 respectively. Thought was the lenovo energy management (file em8180214.exe) but it doesn't.Is this normal ..???ThanksWindows 10 pro 14393.576nVidia 376.33Intel GPU 10.18.10.4425

Hello there,I got some issues here with my Lenovo IdeaPad Y580.I was about to give it a new clean installation of Windows 8.1.Finished, it didn't recognize the HDD I installed it on. So I tried to change the boot priority in the BIOS but it seems like I messed up pretty bad. When I start the laptop now it says: "check cable connection! PXE - MOF: exiting intel PXE ROM" It seems like it tries to boot from a server now, as I read in other forums.Excuse my dangerous half knowledge, I am no expert at all.So the bad thing is that my laptop is stuck in that loop, it would restart and the same message appears. I can't enter the BIOS, I tried F1, F2, FN+F2, F12.I read about it in other forums and posts, I took out the HDD and the SSD, pressed B while starting the laptop.I took out the battery pack, held the power button for a minute.I even dissembled the whole laptop to remove the battery of the motherboard, just to figure out it's not possible to remove the battery on that particular motherboard. So yeah, I tried everything I could find online and I don't know what else to do. Maybe try and external keyboard? But the keyboard seems to work, as when I hit fn+f2 the screen goes black, which is the appropriate shortcut. Can anyone of you help me out? I don't know what else to do. I appreciate any help and comments.Thank you!

Hello, As stated in the title, I have a Lenovo IdeaPad y580. I purchased it approximately three-and-a-half years ago, and only now is it really beginning to chug durings its processes. Point is, I want it to last perhaps another half year or so while I finish saving up for another computer. As a gamer, I'm fine with the limitations of the GPU, but sometimes my laptop legitimately has issues processing stuff, such as loading Google Chrome properly. I know enough about Windows to clean out viral matter and uninstall programs that I don't use that are running in the back. But does anyone have any tips or tricks to make this hunk of junk last maybe six more months before it becomes unusable?TL;DR I need to make my laptop run at least a reasonably sub-average to average level for six more months. Any tips are appreciated.

A:Y50 Keyboard in a Y580?! Compatible?

hi james,

Welcome to the Lenovo Forums.

Looking at the Y580 & Y50-70 hardware maintenance manual (HMM), I'm afraid the keyboard on the Y50-70 won't work on the Y580 as the former has its keyboard built-in to the top cover (upper case).

I have an Ideapad Y580 with a 32 gb SSD and a 1TB HDD. I tried to upgrade to Windows 10 but it failed so I had to do a clean install. I'm trying to go back to Windows 7 since Windows 10 is somewhat glitchy on my computer (I already updated all the drivers). Since it was a clean install, I don't have the "Go Back to Windows 7" option in Windows Recovery. I made a system image just prior to installing Windows 10. I also have a Windows 7 Repair Disc but when I try to boot with it I get a message that says the version is not compatible with the version of Windows I'm trying to repair. Resetting the PC only gives Windows 10 as the target operating system. I tried calling Lenovo support but gave up after 10 minutes on hold and my warranty is expired anyway. Is there any way for me to get back to Windows 7? Or is there a convenient way to get installation media from Lenovo to go back to Windows 7 with the OEM partitions? I was hoping to avoid purchasing the $130 Lenovo "Complex Services" (I'm not even sure if it would solve my problem). Any help is much appreciated Thanks.

Y580, Win10 I just purchased a used Y580 cheap because it has non-functional USB 3.0 ports. The USB 2.0 port works fine. When I plug in a USB cable, it doesn't register anything, as if there's no power to the ports. Which leads me to believe it's not a driver issue...but I could be wrong about that. My thought was that the controller on the motherboard might be bad, but I don't know much about laptops, honestly. I'm more of a desktop guy when it comes to hardware. I'm not even sure if the USB controller is onboard or a separate board in the laptop. Any ideas on how to fix this, or am I just out of luck? Thanks. - Brian

As many of you know the battery guage reset bricks these laptops. I did it and now my Y580 will not boot with battery power alone. The battery charges and works, but if I boot straight from the battery without AC plugged in, the laptop will turn on for a moment then shut off. I tried removing the battery, holding the power button, etc. Even reset the BIOS to defaults. Does anyone have a fix other than replacing the laptop? My warranty is out.

Hi,

I own a Y580-M772CMH 15.6FHD/i7-3610QM/8G/ laptop with Windows 7 and a few weeks ago I used Ccleaner to clean the registry. Like the dumb stupid person I am I did not pay attention to what it was "cleaning".

Next time I booted up my Laptop it failed to start Windows and gave the following message:

Check cable connection!
PXE-M0F: Exiting Intel PXE ROM.
No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key

So next time I pressed F2 while booting to see:

Boot Device Priority
Internal HDD: SAMSUNG MZMPC064HBDR-000L1
SATA HDD: ST1000LM024 HN-M101MBB
SATA ODD: Optiarc BD ROM BC-5550H
Network Boot: Atheros Boot Agent

To me it looked like I still had both disks working so I put in a Windows ISO before boot to see if I could repair. The System Recovery Options screen showed me no known existing OS on the device.

So I powered down and used One Key Recovery which told me when I clicked to restore to factory conditions that the partition layout has changed.

Finally I used a bootable Partition Wizard and that showed me this:

Note the negative used value at disk 1.
To my layman's eyes it seems like the SSD and HDD, that are normally combined by a Lenovo software Raid are now separate. And something I deleted with Ccleaner by accident caused it (probably).

Main thing is, I actually don't know what the problem is and so don't know how to proceed.

I'm afraid my data is lost to me, which isn't a terrible loss, but am I correct in assuming... Read more

I am turning to the community to find out if anyone has installed 16GB of memory in their Y580. Lenovo's manual and website says that 8GB is the maximum supported, but some posts have indicated that it might support 16GB. I need to hear from someone who has actually tried 16GB of RAM in their Y580 as to whether it worked as this is the only thing holding me back from purchasing the Y580.

According to Crucial on their site the max is 8 GB for the Y580 And since Lenovo says the same,i would go with that. However i would be interested to hear otherwise.

I' ve been experiencing problems with graphics in my Y580 laptop ( i7 3630QM, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M 2GB, 8GB RAM ) for about 3 months now ( bought it 3 years ago ). GPU, after reaching about 75 degrees, freezes showing errors:https://scr.hu/zkZzKJhttps://scr.hu/ZM8dk2This errors occur with games - CS:GO and applications - 3DMark. So far i tried:-downclocking-using different nvidia settings-installing different OS ( WIN 7, 8.1, 10 )-upgrading and downgrading drivers ( i' ve noticed that driver versions below 350 are forcing BSODs Dmp, and versions above 350 are giving errors i mentioned earlier) Is my GPU dying? Or maybe it's motherboard fault?

I started monitoring my hard disk a while back when I was having lots of problems. It was running quite hot and the SMART data showed it was on the edge of failure. I replaced the disk with a new one (Seagate ST2000LM007), and almost immediately it started showing high temperatures as well. Within 30 minutes of power-up doing nothing more than reading email and web browsing, the disk will reach and exceed 50. The fan is working, but seems pretty anemic. I've blown out dust and checked for obstructions, but nothing changed. I really don't want to toast another disk. (I've checked other laptops and temperatures seem to peak at 35C). Device manager shows Lenovo ACPI-Compliant Virtual Power Controller, v 5.4.0.1Running Win 7 Pro, all updates installed. In addition to the Seagate disk listed above, there is a 256G mSATA SSD installed.
