ThinkPad T470 is stuck on black screen after Lenovo logo screen and before BIOS password

Q: ThinkPad T470 is stuck on black screen after Lenovo logo screen and before BIOS password

Hi,i have Lenovo ThinkPad T470 (LENOVO 20HD0002MC) and recently has started a strange problem:While booting at first Lenovo logo shows up (where you can get to BIOS by Enter key) and right after screen goes black. When i power down laptop and boot again (sometime few times) intead of the black screen there is a prompt for Bios password, like it should have and booting continues to OS.Enter key for BIOS doesnt work while it slill get stuck on black screen just right before it loads the BIOS (after trying few times with power -off/on it gets to BIOS and i can boot normally)I have BIOS firmware updated to the latest version, so as well drivers for hardware.Im not aware of any change that could potentionally start this issue, maybe after updating bios to some newer version.Otherwise im using Windows 10 with latest updates, but i dont think this could cause the issue as its way before windows loading. Thanks for the help.

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Hi all, I recently purchased a lenovo thinkpad t470. after the first boot setup, i can no longer boot the computer again because it always stucks at the Lenovo screen (it doesn't have the loading circle under the lenovo simble). A:Lenovo Ideapad 110 With AMD Radeon R5 stuck on Black screen after showing logo and preparing repair

 Hi there, Eddie                       -
Thank you for writing in to the Lenovo Forum - happy to have you here today.
Automatic Repair usually kicks in if there's a problem loading up the files that's required to start Windows. If the repair was interrupted and the screen just goes into a black screen then there's most likely a hardware component that's malfunctioning.
To check, try to:

Boot into the BIOS by pressing the OneKey Recovery button

  - Link to picture
If successful, set the following settings in the BIOS:
Security Tab:
Secure Boot = Disabled
Boot Tab:
UEFI = Disabled or Legacy
Boot Mode = Legacy
Boot Priority = Legacy First
Exit Tab
OS Optimized Defaults = Other OS or Disabled
When done, press F10 (or Fn+10) to save and exit and try to boot from your Windows CD

If you're successful in booting from the Windows Disc, see Step 1 to Step 2 of this guideon how to proceed in fixing the issue.
If the problem remains, consider re-installing Windows by pressing the OneKey Recovery button and choose System Recovery

  - Link to picture
In an event that the recovery fails, I recommend you contact Lenovo and report the issue as you may need to send the unit for service.
Update us how it goes.

Was working on my laptop last night and everythign was fine. Came back and tried to wake my p50 from sleep and it wouldn't wake up. No hard drive light showing activity, just the slow throb of the power button showing the computer was asleep. Hitting the power button to wake from sleep doesn't do anything. Holding it down for 10 seconds turns the machine off but when I turn it back on I don't get the Lenovo logo or any post information. Also don't feel any air from the vents. Guessing this is bricked but anyone have any suggestions? I have pulled out the battery and drained all the power from the computer. I do not have anything plugged into the computer and have tried rebooting both on battery power alone and plugged in but get the same response. Thanks!

System Specifications:- X1 Yoga (Gen 3) with i7-8650U and 16GB RAM- BIOS Version: 1.19- EC Version: 1.08 Hello, exactly one week ago, I changed enabled "Thunderbolt BIOS Assist" in the BIOS to support Linux.  Following this, the system refused to boot to anything but a black screen.  Thus, I sent the machine in for depot repair.  I just received the machine back again today and the same thing occurred after enabling the same setting.  After a long series of calls, I was told that no one is authorized to report BIOS bugs and that I should post here instead.  I sincerely hope this is fixed, as this is a major error that required a motherboard replacement previously and will most likely require one again.  I have started a new ticket for this repair and will be receiving a box tomorrow.  However, I wanted to make sure this is passed along to someone who can fix this error.

Good Morning,

For the past several months I have been having problems with my HP desktop computer. When my system reboots I sometimes get a black screen with nothing on it or it gets stuck on the windows logo or I get a blue screen with a bunch of writing.

The blue screen tends to happen with the computer goes into hibernation. So I changed my settings to that it doesn't happen but I would like to fix that so that I can give my computer a rest during the time that I'm not using it.

I have checked for malware, viruses you name it... nothing.

HP HPE-180t
Windows 7 SP1
Intel core i7 930 @2.80GHz
9.00 GB RAM
Kaspersky Internet Security 2013

If you need further info please let me know. ;)
ps I had wonderful support several years ago regarding my laptop.. thank you once again :)

A:Black screen, Blue Screen & Stuck on Windows logo

Hello Britt,

I would like to fix that so that I can give my computer a rest during the time that I'm not using it.

The best way to do this is to simply turn it off; it will also save on the electricty bills too.
When I am not using my machine, I turn it off, because here in South Australia we have the second highest electricity charges in the world.

I get a blue screen with a bunch of writing.

Can you tell us what the blue screen says; usually this is due to a recent hardware or software change; however, in your instance it might be the Hibernation feature that is malfunctioning.
Post back with the information about the blue screen, please.

Kind Regards,

My Lenovo Y50 laptop (I don?t remember the year. Around 2015 or so with GTX 860m graphics card) won?t turn on the screen when started up. It doesn?t even show the Lenovo logo, and when I connect a USB mouse, the mouse flashes its red light for a split second and dies as well. The fan still runs, the red keyboard background lights are still on and could still be turned on or off, but the numpad and capslock lights are unresponsive. I have tried connecting to a TV with HDMI cable (nothing) and replacing the boot drive with another older one (same problems as before). Is there something else I can do? PS: Recently my house had a series of power outtages and the laptop was abruptly shut off a few times (its battery is dead), so the issues came immediately after the last power outtage.

I've done a lot of research on this and am still stumped.   My trusty T500 started to do random shutdowns a few weeks back.  Sometimes it would restart with no issue, sometimes I would need to briefly remove the CMOS battery to get it to restart.  Now it will only "try" to start, showing the power on, the "Z" light and the bluetooth  indicator light but no Thinkpad splash screen or POST.   I can hear the disk start to spin then.... nothing.   I have ordered a new CMOS battery and have tried the remedies such as removing RAM, CMOS, etc with no change.   The computer was working quite will before this situation.  I have seen suggestions that I have a bad poly-fuse and that would make some sense if it was resetting, in partial failure or failed. Has anyone experienced this and what did you do to resolve? Thanks,Dave

Hello, Lenovo Ideapad stuck when booting at the Lenovo logo. No beeps. Not responding to F1, F2, F10, F12 or Del keys being tapped at boot.Power button and keyboard light up. Tried booting from USB using a bootable stick - didn't happen, boot still stops at the Lenovo logo. I'm familiar with laptops and their innards - have tried removing and reseating RAM (and using individual modules vs both) - still stuck at the logo when trying to boot. Removing both gives me a blank black screen at boot - no logo.Replaced RAM modules - this machine has two hard drives - both bootable; tried removing one, then the other. Still stuck at boot logo. Removed both, still stuck at boot logo. I've prodded at nearly all the contacts inside - all seem to be intact; the motherboard is definitely receiving power. Any suggestions would be appreciated !!!

Okay, I so also looked up whether the BIOS could be 'hard reset' - assuming there is a corruption in the config; and there isn't much help online. But if anyone knows how, please drop in a comment !Now, somehow, after reattaching all parts and discovering an old microSD card in the SD adapter - inside the laptop's slot - and then removing it, my laptop is booting again !Is this what could have caused it? I am not familiar with laptops (EFI or BIOS based) trying to boot from a memory slot. Or perhaps my prodding and putting it back together did something, Keeping this thread open in case anyone would like to weigh in on the points above!

I just got my X1 carbon today. The major problem is that the CPU is overheating. It can easily reach to 90 degrees or even higher. (I already used XTU undervolted the cpu) The fan is always on and a little bit noisy if using the laptop even for performing some simple tasks such as open a web. It will turn so hot that i won't even able to reset my hand on the right side of the keyboard above the air outlet (the area next to "enter"). Since it is a new system, i need to restart it after updating and installing some apps. The system stuck at Lenovo logo screen during restarting a few times already. I think it was due to overheating. Long press the power bottom and restart it will solve the problem.

Hello,The weirdest problem I ever encountered. I tried to google the solution but everything I found didn't work.I have a Lenovo Y50-70 Touch screen. Most of the time it stays open on my desk while turned on (and sometimes went to sleep mode). During all this time it worked well.A few months ago I needed to restart the laptop and so after, the screen went black and didn't turn on at all. Not even the logo. While the fans and the keyboard's lights are working. At that time, I tried to turn the laptop off by pressing the on/off button for a few seconds, and after off/on several times, it suddenly loaded the Lenovo logo and worked.Since then and up to a week ago, the laptop worked fine and I even played games with it.A week ago I needed to restart it again, and again the problem accrued.I found on google that maybe it's the charger but it didn't help, but after I connected the charger again (in the 4th times) it suddenly worked again...Today I needed to shut down the laptop, and now nothing help and the screen is black again when I try to power it up.* One weird thing also happened during today - during my attempts to turn it on, suddenly the logo loaded again, and right after it, a blue screen with Windows Update progress was shown. When it finished, the laptop restarted again and... now again the screen is black and doesn't turn on.* When I shut down the laptop, I didn't send it to update or anything, I don't know why I got this update window...More things that we tried here (aft... My encrypted Thinkpad T470 (2yrs old) has suddenly begun "crashing" during use. This doesn't seem to be triggered by any particular programs or user behaviour that I can identify, and once it happens it will occur again relatively soon if I restart it without a long rest. What happens is that the screen goes black, and white boxes flicker in and out. Sometimes I see white lines near the top, which I associate with graphics card issues, but I've never seen this white boxes pattern before. The laptp will not project on an external monitor, so it's not just a display issue. It does not fully shut down when this happens, but rather requires a force quit in order to restart. It restarts normally until it crashes again. Any ideas on what is happening here? Am I on the right track to suspect graphics card issues? Thanks.

Hi, I bought this chromebook a few weeks ago, and it was working fine until a day or so ago when the display screen would not come on. The laptop can turn on as normal, but the screen remains black. I looked for solutions online, but they seem specific to other models of Lenovo laptops/chromebooks which have different F keys. I attached a picture of the keyboard. Are there any general solutions I can attempt? Also is this something that could have been caused by wear with the keyboard? (my cat sometimes sat on it), or was it an existing issue with the display/graphics card? (I bought it on ebay). Thank you in advance for any help provided.

A:Lenovo G50-30 : getting black screen after lenovo logo

Hi zoheb_syed ,
Welcome to the Community Forums.
Doing factory reset would delete everything and repartitioned with new Windows on it just like out of the box .
Lenovo splash screen is a good sign that power goes in the computer and the devices required for a working machine.
For as long as you back up your files , try doing the Lenovo Restore using the Novo key (no.2 page 9).
Just turn off the pc and use the Novo button to turn it on . Novo menu would give the System Recovery
Soon as done , create a local account and proceed.
If it goes to a black screen during the process , I recommend you call in tech support for repair.
Most likely there would be a problem with the GPU since rendering on Windows failed.
You can also check the display on any external monitor to see if the display would work externally to isolate LCD or cable issue .
If the computer finish up with the restoration then run Lenovo diagnostics.
Tech support can give you repair options or if BIOS update is neccessary .
Best check on your warranty for the type of repair service you would expect (either sending to depot or Onsite repair)
Considering the turn around time of the repair , which I know that you need it on a daily basis for work  Try above step and let us see how it works.
Hope this helped you get things done on your issue.

If a repair install did not help, probably your best bet is a clean install. You can take the drive out to salvage any data you cherish that is not backed up.

I purchased a system with dual GTX580's about a year and a half ago. I have had issues with system crashes (lockups, no blue screen, and no alt-tabbing out of them) almost from the beginning. Since I am impressed with some of the technical responses I have seen on threads in this forum, thought I'd reach out for help before I pull what hair I have left out.....

I tried literally every different bios update available, every single driver release Nvidia has released, too many clean windows installs to count, MSI Afterburner/EVGA Precision (video voltage increases, clock decreases (removing EVGA superclocking), replaced the SLI bridge, different ram, different powersupply cables, different fan speeds, and so many other things over the past 1.5 years it's rediculous.

In preparation for trashing the cards, I pulled them out and put my old cards back in. These are also EVGA brand, 8800's, also can run them in SLI with the same bridge, and not a single problem. This is while running the same driver release (clean install though) as the 580's.

So I put one 580 back in, both slots 1 & 3, and to my surprise it worked just fine in either PCI slot. Tried the other 580, also works fine when alone. Put them both in, put the bridge on, and it crashes right after Bios loads, before it even makes it to the windows logo/login screen.

Seems to have gotten worse over time (was just during intense gaming, next it's when in windows but not gaiming, sometimes at the Windows l... Read more

A:GTX580 Black Screen/Reboot in Games, Windows Logo, even at Bios load

A 1200 Watt PSU should be plenty for your setup as long as it is performing as expected. If you have had problems from the beginning with the cards, I suspect the SLI interface itself is bad on either one or both of the cards. How do they run with the bridge removed and just the cards themselves in? You mentioned running one at a time, but have you tried running with both cards in without the bridge?

I would try resetting the BIOS using the jumper, or by taking out the CMOS battery, wait a minute or two, and then replace it and try booting up. See page 73 of the Hardware Maintenance Manaul linked below for location of the Clear CMOS/Recovery jumper (# 20) https://download.lenovo.com/pccbbs/thinkcentre_pdf/m83m93p_hmm.pdf Clearing the CMOS (BIOS)1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer. Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer. 2. Remove the computer cover. 3. Locate the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper on the system board. 4. Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) to the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3). 5. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. 6. Turn on the computer and leave it on for approximately 10 seconds. Then, turn off the computer by holding the power switch for approximately five seconds. 7. Repeat step 1 through step 2. 8. Move the Clear CMOS /Recovery jumper back to the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2). 9. Reinstall the computer cover and connect the power cord. Good Luck,
