Preferred Solution: Superfetch Stopped Working

I recommend downloading and running DAP. It can help sort out any driver and firmware related issues on your system

It's worked out well for many of us in the past.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloaddap.org. (This link will open the download page of DAP so you can save a copy to your computer.)

Reverted back to ati 10.8 driver but the computer is still reverting to windows basic and the same point superfetch crashes

Not really sure what I should do.

Here's what I have done so far:

First I ran chkdsk /f /r -- solved nothing.

Then I did a memory diagnostic -- it found a memory error. But it was a simple fix -- just had to reseat my memory. I thought "Okay, this should solve the problem."

But it didn't. So I ran chkdsk /f again (not sure if I should do /r or not again. It takes forever, and I'd like to know if that'd solve my problem or not before I try again).

So at this point, I'm not really sure what to do. I've read somewhere to delete the files in the prefetch folder, but I was also told this probably wouldn't work for me.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

After a hard shut down, because the computer froze in a shut down state, the computer acted strangely, and when it finally got to running normally, I get this message that superfetch has stopped working.  How can I get it to work like it is suppose to?  I am running Vista Home Premium Build 6000

A:Superfetch stopped working

I found the answer to Superfetch stopped working, It was simple, but took about 12 hours to get the correct answer.  Do you know anything about prefetch in XP?  If so you know it builds up like cache on the internet and temp files.  Well all you need to do is clear those files in prefetch, and wala it takes care of the Superfetch problem.  This is something Microsoft does not tell you.  Thanks for the suggestion, but I liked this way much better.

I understand what SuperFetch does. It monitors automatic updates, and processes and sends them to a lower priority queue in order to make your processes and work run faster (if I am not mistaken).

My SuperFetch crashes when I update McAfee, or other programs. This then crashes my svchost.exe.

I am on a Dell XPS 630i. Intel(R) Core(TM)2 Quad CPU Q9300 @ 2.50GHz 2.50 GHz, 3.00 GM of RAM, 32-bit Operating System with dual nVidia GeForce 9800 GTs running Windows Vista(TM) Home Premium.

In fact.. this is the second computer I have recieved from Dell. The first (exact same) was crashing under a stop code of 0X0000001A and having issues with the svchost.exe. I exchanged it, and this computer aswell is having similar issues (although not many unexpected crashes).

This computer has only crashed for explained reasons (graphic drivers out of date, etc.) All reasons have been fixed, and haven't had a crash since.

If there is any logical explanation for why this is happening, i'd love to get an opinion from a software-savvy person out there because I know little to nothing about computers to be completely honest.

Hi Msibley,

That is not what Superfetch does, it monitors what applications you use most and loads them into memory for quicker access. These tutorials might be of interest to you.

I have a question for you, what does it means when i get a box pop up saying superfetch has stopped working?

A:superfetch has stopped working

Hi again espatcho,

Superfetch is a feature of Vista, it remembers your normal activity on the computer; email, surfing the net, playing games, etc. It stores the information in cache in order to retrevive it quickly, when needed. If not working, it will take longer for the OS to get these applications and programs for you.

Edit: We are very lucky our own Brink, on another site, has tried to solve the problem. Read this and let us know.

Ive been recently having an issue with my laptop whenever I turn it on. It keeps saying superfetch stopped working and then another window pops up saying windows host processes stopped working. I'm not sure if this is related but I also have a problem when I get it out of sleep mode. The screen stays black with only the mouse showing and it can take up to 30 mins before the screen comes back to normal. I have no idea what to do or where to start. Ive scanned for viruses but it found nothing.

the superfetch feature has seemed to stop caching as much...

ive had fresh install of vista ultimate for 2-3 weeks now and Superfetch was filling the 1.5Gb spare RAM with cache data (as it does) , now its seemed to have stopped even though the service is still running...

right now its saying 450Mb cached and 900Mb free ???

Now i was testing it on and off when i first installed Vista to see what the fuss was about and most of the time when it was OFF it would still cache to about the same figures as above but most of the time it would end up filling all 1.5Gb cache (yes even when off)... NOW its been on 2 weeks running and filling up the cache quicker than normal (as its learning) but then from yesterday its stopped filling it right up??? why is this???

I did install Firefox Pre-Loader and have uninstalled it due to problems with firefox actually NOT opening - I doubt that would have affected it

Hi, I'm new a novice and happy to be here.

I'm running MSWindows 7 Ultimate and when checking my performance get a message that Superfetch isn't working.

Control Panel/All Control Panel Items/Troubleshooting/check for performance issues

I've been to MSAnswers but no joy so far, perhaps this is the place to get it fixed.

On advice I've:
1. deleted contents of Prefetch and then Superfetch works only next time you reboot you're back at square one.
2. uninstalled my virus protection and rebooted. No change so reloaded it.

Any ideas folks? Any help will be v.appreciated. Graham.

Hi guys, I've been doing some research and learning about Superfetch and what it does. I understand the philosophy behind it...such as..."unused Ram is wasted Ram," etc, etc. Personally, I have to say I disagree with that Philosophy for various reasons.

When I use my PC for a while and have multiple programs open over time. I find that my "Free Ram" is quickly dropped down to 700 - 800mb or less. This causes issues while browsing the web. If my Ram is that low, I can't open that many multiple browser tabs. Not to mention have multiple programs open at the same time.

I mean...what's the point in having Multiple Core Processors if you can't even have the benefit of using them? The single biggest argument I've seen so far is that Windows 7 frees up Ram as you need it. So, it creates yet another process to lag the computer even further? Bad Philosophy.

Another reason that's a bad philosophy is because of Video Editors as well as Gamers. Those of you who are in the fields of heavy gaming such as Minecraft and Skyrim...know what I'm talking about. This lack of free Ram..plus more processes firing off because Windows is trying to free up the Ram...makes for a bad gaming experience...perhaps no gaming experience at all.

For this very reason...I've come to my issue. I've tried everything I could find on the subject of disabling Superfetch...Prefetch...etc, etc...yet it's still not working. When ever I restart my PC...is the only time that m... Read more

The mouse started to stray and stopped working in the middle of doing something, i.e. eBay, typing word and etc. which is very annoying and first of all, I lose all of the work done due to stopping of the mouse.

However, the mouse started working as if nothing wrong, once I restarted by 'force' restart ..... pushing the button in the middle of the PC. Otherwise, the PC is all fine and working OK.

I did apply Malwarebytes to combat the issue, however the issue does not resolve.

Any help on this would be truoly appreciated.

A:Mouse stopped working in the middle of working, i.e. eBay, typing word, etc.

Did you try a different mouse? If you still have the same problem with a new mouse, see if there are any drivers for the mouse from it's manufacturers web site.
Also try a Clean Boot, if that works, then add one startup item at a time till the mouse acts weird again, then you know that is the problematic program.

So one day I was using a laptop wirelessly when the internet just suddenly turned off. I checked my modem and it was working fine but when I checked my router, the lights were on but not blinking. it was just a steady light. when I checked for a wireless network the name of the network I usually use didnt show up.

I tried unplugging everything and plugging everything back in again and I tried pressing the reset button on the back of the router. Can anyone help?

Thanks so much

P.S. my router is a linksys WRT300N Wireless-N Broadband router

A:Wireless router suddenly stopped working (Lights still working though)

what devices do you have connected the router anything else wireless
make and model of the pc

does the PC work if you connect to the router by a cable ?
if not
try connecting directly to the modem and see if that works OK

we need to see some details, which will mean you need to copy to a working PC
{run Xirrus Wi-Fi Inspector} Download and install
If you cannot access the internet with this PC, then you will need to copy the program across to the faulty PC

Direct link to the program is here http://www.xirrus.com/library/wifi_download_redirect.php
Then run and install the program
if you get an error - You need NET Framework installed for the WiFi Inspector to function.

Run the program

post a screen shot of the program running - if there are a lot of networks showing can you click on "networks" top lefthand area - so we can see all the network information, and also post which network "Adapter Name" (1st column) is yours on the list

To post a screen shot of the active window, hold the Alt key and press the PrtScn key. Open the Windows PAINT application and Paste the screen shot. You can then use PAINT to trim to suit, and save it as a JPG format file.
To upload it to the forum, open the full reply window and use the Manage Attachments button to upload it here.

I have had a rather large problem over the last couple of days. It started earlier in the week, when one drive stopped working. Not a big problem, I've had drives fail before. 4 disks, so i can handle one less for a little while, i though. Not so though, while still waiting for my new drive, using my computer like usual (with less load on unit D) i suddenly start getting write-errors to D:, and the Intel Matrix Storage Console lists it as Stopped Working instead of Degraded. Nothing changed except for the status of the Volume, all the disks read the same as before, fully functional.

I have very little experience with these sort of matters. This is the first time I've lost a drive where i might lose data as well, and i have pretty much no idea where to go from here. I've tried to replace the faulty disk with another 500GB drive, but the RAID-setup in BIOS just tells me there isn't enough space, and the Console in Windows places the new drive as a Non-RAID drive. I can mark it as reserve, but that seems to be all i can do with it.

I'm not, hopefully, asking for miracles. I have just two things that i really need to retrieve from the Volume, my Firefox sessions (saved in a separate folder at the root of the drive), and my Thunderbird mail, (stored in their standard location, as my whole Windows-profile is on that drive). Everything else i can get again. (Well, not really, i have stuff stored up from 8-10 years back, from people who has withdrawn from t... Read more

Okay, this is the weirdest problem I've ever hard with computers. Here's what happened:

1. I had a few years old Pentium D 2,8GHz processor running on Asus P5VDC-X mobo. PQI 566MHz DDR2 and GF 7600GS 256mb PCI-E, 350W power.
2. I updated the mobo to Asus P5L-MX to support faster PCI-E cards. Everything worked fine, despite the processor ran too hot (58C on high use)
3. Because of the overheating I replaced the thermal paste but it had no effect on the temperature.
4. I thought I used too much paste so I replaced the paste again.
5. Bang, no video when I turn on the computer. I tried taking off everything part by part but nothing worked. It didn't work even when I only had processor and used the integrated graphics port. Tried resetting the bios too.
6. Nothing worked so I put back the old P5VDC-X and it worked like charm.
7. I thought it was logical that the problem was caused because of the mobo so I bought a new one, Asrock G31M-S.
8. No video... Did the same steps to this one too. It also had integrated gfx but it didn't work either.
9. The old P5VDC-X still works.

So I have no idea what's causing the problem. Is it the CPU? Mobo? PSU? RAM? I have no speaker on my case so I can't hear any beeps, but it won't start loading the OS from the hardrive and my USB mouse won't turn on. Tried using a differen't monitor too.

The main point is why it stopped working suddenly on new mobo's but still works with the old P5VDC-X? A... Read more

Two new motherboards tells us you made the same simple install error in both of them.
Tell us more about power supply, memory, cable.
Did you make sure the memory was correct for both new boards, and what is the memory on the old board. Would also like to know the power supply and other hard ware.
What happens with the most basic, simple install. Does everything light up?

If you used the same hard drive with the same Windows install on the two motherboards, that is the problem. Windows has detected that you have changed the motherboard and will not operate unless you reinstall Windows on the drive on each new motherboard... One install for each motherboard.
My guess is that you will be fine if you change hard drives or do reinstalls or repair installs of the Windows on the new motherboard.

Windows SuperFetch enables programs and files to load much faster than they would on Windows XP–based PCs.

When you're not actively using your computer, background tasks—including automatic backup programs and antivirus scans—run when they will least disturb you. These background tasks can take up system memory space that your programs had been using. On Windows XP–based PCs, this can slow progress to a crawl when you attempt to resume work.

SuperFetch monitors which applications you use the most and preloads these into your system memory so they'll be ready when you need them. Windows Vista also runs background programs, like disk defragmenting and Windows Defender, at low priority so that they can do their job but your work always comes first."

But why does it keep failing? It is helping me in no way at all when it just goes, and I have to reboot. Meh.

Oh. Merry xmas everyone. (:

Hi folks, hope this is finding y'all well.

Got a quickie regarding Vista's feature called SuperFetch. From what I understand it is designed to prepare maintenance tasks to be run during idle CPU times.

Why would this service automatically shut itself down, or error out? If Vista is supposed to be "self-healing", then how is it that this native Vista feature can't figure out how to keep itself alive?

Further, does this feature erroring out have any impact on other elements (memory management, buffering, file extension recognition, etc)? Every once in a while I have to reboot in order to be able to re-activate the right-click features in the explorers.

Looking forward to your feedbacks!

I constantly hear that Superfetch should be turned off when you run the OS on an SSD. I totally fail to see the point.

RAM is still a lot faster than the fastest SSD and a good pack of cached stuff enhances performance. So why would anybody want to miss that opportunity.

The only argument I have seen is that people are afraid that the extra write operations would wear the SSD. I think this is phony. Measurements have shown that the SSDs will last a lot longer than you care to keep it.

Any other arguments??

A:Superfetch and the SSD

I leave my superfetch on.... I've had SSDs for over a year, and my first one is still at 100% life left... and I tend to format and reinstall alot cause I'm OCD about my computers.... I just recently upgraded my main system to two Vertex 3 120gb drives in a raid 0... I can't imagine using a HDD for a boot drive anymore... I make very few "tweaks" to my SSD"s

So, in short, I agree, the worry about writing too much is a bit overhyped, especially on the latest gen drives...

A few weeks ago, my computer starting getting an error message saying that 'superfetch is disabled' and suggesting I check online for a solution to fix it. It only appears when I first switch on the computer. After about half an hour of surfing it doesn't appear. The computer is taking ages to boot up and the internet browser page keeps 'twitching and jumping'. I don't know how else to best describe it. I use Firefox as my browser generally, but the same thing happens with Internet Explorer. I'd never heard of 'Superfetch' until recently and don't know what it does when its working. I'm not great when it comes to computers. Any advice would be really helpful. I've had the computer for about 2 and a half years. I've run CCleaner to clear out something (not too sure what). No problems with virus or malware at all.

I have alwsays been getting fast and decent replies here so I?m starting a new thread (I hope this is the right place to start it) :P

This might be to much text for you guys but please read the two headlines atleast (and sorry for my bad english).

My problem is that I can?t get my superfetch to start!
The symptoms is:
My theme keeps switching between my custom theme and Window 7s Aero theme. My Internet card seems to have some trouble as well but i have found temporary solutions for that (It does NOT necessarily have anything to do with superfetch but figured i should mention it).

I found out about superfecth when i bought this USB stick yesterday and was going to use as a ready boost. Now in "proporties>Ready boost" tab of the USB stick win7 said that Sysmain was disabled but could be enabled with some tool, so i googled it and found superfetch and it was disabled.

Here is where the problem starts: when i press start on the superfetch service it starts as it should but after 3 min its off, the internet card is inactivated and the Aero theme is back. If I put in the USB stick directly after i?ve started superfetch everything as mentioned above happens but without the 3 minutes of waiting...

By the way, i dont get any messages about superfetch doesnt work or anything.

Anyone got a clue? ... please help

When you look at you Event Viewer Logs do you get an error number or anything pertaining to readyboost or superfetch? Type event viewer in the Start/Search Bar and hit return to open event viewer and take a look and post any errors that you see.

Hi... new here and have learned lots and lots!
I have a new computer (Mar 2011) and after reading everything here about installing the SP1, I bit the bullet. Everything went smoothly.
The next day I noticed my boot time went from 45 sec to 95. From posts here, I waited 5 days to see if things "settled" down and no change. Sooooo.... I looked at the events logs and noticed the following events that occurred during the SP1 installation....

(info) superfetch service was changed from auto start to demand start....
(info) superfetch service entered the stopped state and finally....
(error) the superfetch service terminated with the following error "The service has not been started"
Subsequent boot-ups events make no mention of superfetch.

I do not know if superfetch was enabled prior to the SP installation and now am trying to get my boot time back to a reasonable time. Should I enable superfetch? The current status is "manual".

I've read everything on this forum about superfetch and notice some say that with a lot of ram, 8GB, it is not needed and won't help. My applications seem to open without much delay but this boot time is driving me nuts!

Ran malware bytes and ccleaner = o problems
Disabled most entries in msconfig start-up
I'm holding up on installing windows updates (29 of em now) so that this problem gets fixed first.

Appreciate any help.......

A:To superfetch or not?

Superfetch should have been enabled - Automatic (Delayed Start) in Services by default with a new installation of Windows.

The only reason to have Superfetch disabled, would be if you had an SSD. And even then, it's 50/50 on if it should be disabled or enabled with an SSD.

If you just have a HDD then it should be enabled - Automatic (Delayed Start).

Iv'e just disabled mine as it was slowing the laptop down considerably, i was facing constant freezes and programs taking ages to open, switching superfetch off has sped the system considerably, ive read a few articles that advocate the use of superfetch,so i would like more info based on members experiences.
ive run some progs at the same time and what would normally open slow and freeze the laptop when trying to open multi progs ,
they have run fine with decent opening speeds. photoshop for instance opened in half the time, easily half probably more

the only thing i havent checked is the boot speed, will check in a few mins, i have soluto installed so i will have an accurate test comparison for the last boot speeds.

what are your thoughts / experiences with superfetch.

edit; just rebooted and soluto informs me my boot speed was 6 seconds longer, this to me is minimal in comparison to the benefits recieved with the freed up ram.

A:Superfetch on or off?

Leave it on.

Have they changed its code in some fundamental way? I always used to have to disable it eventually on vista as it was very greedy with ram, quite frequently leaving me with very little head room. But, on W7 it seems incredibly well behaved. It's almost as if is not enabled.

How much RAM do you have installed?

I have 6 gigs of Memory. But my system keeps caching all of what is not being used. Should I change the parameter, in the registry, from 3 to something else? I don't want to turn it off completly, and I understand a parameter of 1 would be best.

It seems that my system slows down when it has to go to the cache to find memory for an application. I would think that some memory should be available when launching a program for faster response.

Please advise. Should I fool with it?

A:Where is Superfetch?

Hello eightforums =)

I can't find a good answer to this online, just years old posts saying disable pre/superfetch for any ssd system, so now I'm asking here:

I have a 250gb SSD as a boot drive (8.1 pro) and a 1tb HDD for storage

I have heard that Win 8 will automatically disable pre/superfetch if it detects an SSD as the system drive, as well as continue to allow pre/superfetch to operate on other drives (hdds) in the pc

Just wondering if anyone can confirm/deny this, and if there is a way to verify (other than benchmarking) that pre/superfetch is operating on my hdd but not my ssd?

Thanks in advance =)

A:Superfetch on SSD+HDD system?

The best answer is to let Windows 8 take care of it. Windows 8(and now 10) OS's are optimized for SSD's. It will see what you have, and even if the service is still on, will apply to HDD's what HDD's need, and to SSD's what SSD's need. the only change I made is to policies in device management for disks, because I have a UPS battery backup and for my laptop too, because it has a battery:

Does anyone notice that after statup is complete, you get a 2 and a half
minute of Prefetching going on. There is a 2 and a half minute of constant
hard disk activity during this time and from the Reliability and Performance
Monitor, it shows hundreds of:

svchost.exe (LocalSystemNetworkRestricted)
svchost.exe (secsvcs)

The top one is related to Superfetch.
The second one is related to Windows Defender.

Does anyone else get this?

By the way, here are some screenshots:

The first one is a screenshot in the Reliability and Performance Monitor
during the Prefetching. The second one I just took now of the Event Viewer
because I wondered why there are lots of Boot and Shutdown Performance
Monitoring errors. Not sure if this related or if this is normal or something
I can fix etc.

So I also don't know if I should be getting what is shown on screen shot 2.

Windows 8/8.1 is supposed to have superfetch disabled automatically when it recognizes a SSD, but mine is enabled. I have a SSD but also a secondary HDD that is accelerated with a 25 mSATA SSD via Intel Rapid Storage Technology. I'm assuming since the second HDD is enhanced with a SSD then there should be no reason whatsoever to leave superfetch on... Am I wrong? I'm thinking I should turn it off, and if there's anything else you think I should do to improve my settings or stop any services I don't need, please do feel free to let me know.

A:Superfetch enabled on my SSD?

No, in windows 8/8.1 it's enabled even if you have an SSD. Superfetch is different. It ignores it. You can disable print spooler and bluetooth service and homegroup services if you don't share files over your network.
