I've recently got a new computer laptop with Windows 7 and the first thing I noticed that the screen is much brighter (and maybe more saturated) than my previous laptop (with Windows XP). First I thought it was my laptop, but then I saw an other computer with Windows 7, and the screen there is very bright too. I searched the net and I see that there are more people complaining about the brightness on Windows 7.
I understand that I can set the screen brightness, but it seems like a fact that the "default" brightness on Windows 7 is way brighter than on Windows XP. Some people are probably accustomed to this, but to me it's too much. I can decrease the brightness with the laptopl's controls on the keyboard, but I think that's not the way to go - I think I should look at the Windows 7 configuration. I could go to the ATI Catalyst, but is there an other way? Is the Calibration tool the only option?
And the second question, if this is a common problem, maybe there are some known settings that would take Windows 7 brightness closer to Windows XP and earlier versions?
I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.
I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.
You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)
If these are new laptops then, yes they will be brighter then older computers. But it has nothing to do with Windows. It has to do with the display themselves. A lot of the new LCDs on modern laptops are brighter quite a bit brighter then previous generations in part, moving to LEDs for the backlight.Read other 6 answers

I have a NIVIDIA RIVA TNT2 MODEL 64P monitor with Windows XP installed. The brightness, color etc. on the monitor seem to be at the max but all images/pictures/movie files etc are very dark. Is there any other way to adjust the brightness on the monitor?
I think that's just your video card type. If your monitor is old and this has been gradually getting worse then it could be going. You can usually adjust the brightness with your video card settings.
Right click desktop, choose properties, settings, advanced. You may have to try a few of the tabs to find the controls.

Last tuesday I've received my new laptop / netbook: Asus X205TA. After installing everything I found out that my brightness isn't adjusting. I've tried to:
- Use all different ways to adjust brightness (charms bar, shortcut, power plan settings etc.)
- Windows update
- Update Microsoft Basic Display Adapter drivers (there are no updates available)
- Disable and re-enable the Display Adapter
Yet: it's not working. I've also have a problem booting up games. Even the simplest of games (as the netbook is low-spec) are either not booting up, or they show errors about not being able to access the video card or so. I wonder whether these issues have something to do with the brightness settings.
I'd appreciate any input from you guys
Well issue is that your graphics cards drivers are't installed, nor detected! So you are stuck with Basic Display Adapter Drivers
I had a look at the specs and it says "Integrated Intel? HD Graphics" which isn't helpful as there are different models of the Integrated Intel? HD Graphics

well when my laptop is plugged in it shows maxiumum brightness, but when its not plugged in it become brighter, yet brightness setting shows in the middle, for not plugged in, how can i get the plugged in brightness to equal unplugged brightness, and I have tried changing power settings.
First of all, please specify maker and model of your laptop. Some vendors could have their own third party replacements for some functions.
Also, please go to Control Panel - Power Options - on the right side of your current active power plan select "Change plan settings" - in the next window click "Change ADVANCED power settings" - then navigate to - Display - Display brightness and check percentage.

Is there a hotkey button to adjust the brightness on the laptop? If so maybe it is stuck or sticking.
EDIT: My sister has the same laptop try holding the Fn button and tapping the F7 and F8 buttons to adjust the brightness. Those buttons might be sticking causing the issue.
I recently upgraded from WIN98SE to WINXP. Before the upgrade I used to go into my Display settings to adjust the brightness on my monitor through the video card, but now through XP I cannot find that function. My video card is a Nvidia Riva TNT2 64MB card. I have a brightness adjustment in the monitor settings, but that is already adjusted at 100% and I need to adjust up a little bit more. Does that make sense? Does someone know where I can find this now that I am on XP?
Uninstall your NVidia display adapter. Run one of these to be sure all the driver files are removed: Driver Cleaner Professional or Nasty File Remover.
Then, install the most recent driver:
You'll find color, brightness, gamma adjustments in the advanced display properties and a separate adjustment for DirectX overlays, such as video player windows.
i cant get the function keys for the adjusting of brightness of my laptop screen. i can adjust it when it starts up but when the welcome message of windows xp starts i cant adjust it anymore. it's very annoying since i have to restart my laptop just to adjust the brightness using the function keys. anyone can help? please thanks.

Hi there guys,
I have a problem with my dell inspiron m301z laptop,

So its like the brightness is adjusting automatically depending on the virtual environment. I looked up the forum for similiar problems and tried some things with the power options and stuff but couldnt not fix it..
However this does not happen when the adapter is plugged in, everything stays equal all the time,

Hi everyone, I have a pretty weird tech problem.
What happens is, whenever I adjust my monitor's brightness (from its physical buttons) the screen turns black. However the monitor is still on, the LED is still green and the computer is still responsive, the screen just turns black.
I can use the computer just fine, as long as I don't try to adjust anything. If I do want to change something, I have to change the values a little, then restart, change them again, restart until I have the values I want. This problem appeared when I tried to adjust the brightness by keeping the + button pressed down, so it increased quickly.
Is this indicative of a dying monitor ? It is pretty old, it's an LG L1750SQ, 17 inch LCD, it's over 4 years old. Also, I do not believe the video card to the problem, since it stays pretty cool, it has a good heatsink on it.

I have a Tosheba Satellite laptop running on windows 8 software and the audio is hollow/tinny.
I've clicked the audio output device icon, but can't find any equalizer button.
I've searched the apps and there's a 'DTS Sound' option; I've increased the bass, and used the bass boost option, but the sound is still awful.
Is this merely the laptop quality?
I would guess that there is too little space for speakers in any laptop to render bass effectively. Try a good set of earphones.Read other 10 answers

Try disabling the Windows audio enhancements. I haven't used Windows 8, but the steps are probably similar to the steps needed to disable enhancements in Windows 7:
Right-click on the speaker icon in the notification area (system tray in earlier versions of Windows) and click on "Playback devices."
Double-click on your default audio device in the window that appears.
Click on the Enhancements tab and check the "Disable all enhancements" box. The actual enhancements might not appear to be enabled (their check boxes will be unchecked), but they are all enabled anyway.
I had the same problem, and that fixed it. It also improved sound quality. It also disabled the audio enhancements and equalizer included with the audio driver on my computer. If disabling enhancements prevents audio effects in games from working properly, you will have to enable the enhancements again and live with it. However, I doubt that Creative or Realtek are dumb enough to disable anything besides basic 2-channel audio when the enhancements are disabled like Conexant does.
Also, why do you have drivers for two different audio devices installed? If you have a Sound Blaster card, you won't be using the Realtek onboard audio.
I'm trouble shooting an issue I'm having with my DVD drive, it's just not reading the DVD. It reads other DVDs fine, and the DVDs I'm trying to run works fine on other systems.

In the event that your CD-ROM drive cannot read the CD, you may want to reduce the buffer and optimization settings on your CD-ROM drive. To do this, right-click on My Computer. Select Properties, select the Performance tab, select the File System, and select CD-ROM. Decrease the Supplemental Cache Size and set the optimization to No Read-Ahead.

Very similar if not identical to this thread: whenever I adjust the volume on this Toshiba Satellite A135 laptop using the analog dial on the front of the machine, Windows Explorer crashes. Also, the Speaker Properties window in the Control Panel will crash if I click the Levels tab. This only started happening since the upgrade to Service Pack 1 of Vista. (This machine runs Vista Home Basic, and just fine before the upgrade).
Probably a driver issue, I know, but Toshiba doesn't seem to have released any audio driver updates. Driver version installed is Realtek High Definition Audio 22.214.171.12422, from 11/8/2006.

Beginning today, I opened my laptop from sleep and noticed the display was at its lowest brightness setting. I then tried to restart it to see if that would solve it, no luck. I did some googling and found out it could be a problem with the graphics driver. I then disabled it and enabled it. Now the brightness is at its max settings.
The function (FN) + F4, F5 (the keys to adjust the brightness settings) do nothing. The brightness status will show up on the screen and only change 1 or 2 notches.
I then realized I should have a way to adjust the brightness via the Power Settings in the Control Panel. I even confirmed this with a friend. I should have the sliders to adjust the brightness but I do not. It's very strange.

Hi, I am having some issues regarding my laptop's brightness. Firstly, when I turn my laptop on, the brightness is always on pitch black so I can't see the screen. I have been on to all the settings and put the brightness as max for both when it is plugged into power, and not. And yet each time I switch it on, the brightness isn't on and the screen is completely black. Secondly, my brightness buttons are the wrong way round, so the button I should press to reduce the brightness actually increases it, and the button I should press to increase the brightness actually decreases it.Again I have looked in the settings and can't find anything there to change them - I haven't downloaded or installed anything that should have changed them, I literally use the laptop for microsoft office and the internet. Hello, I have a minor problem happening. When I play certain games in windowed mode the brightness of the game will make my desktop of the same brightness. HP Notebook - TOUCH, ENERGY STARModel #: 15-ac113clWindows 10, 64-bit As of the last couple of days, my laptop's brightness has seemingly been changing by itself. It's been increasing so much that it almost looks like it's in grayscale. The brightness fluctuates every 3-4 seconds or so, becoming extremely bright, and then slowly returning to normal. This happens both while the laptop is plugged in, and when it is not. I have Googled this using every phrasing I could possibly think of, and have yet to find anyone else with my same problem. I have seen some forum posts about fluctuating brightness, but the responses all said to either disable Adaptive Brightness, or to disable Power Saving Technology in the Intel HD Graphics control panel. In my case, both of these settings were already disabled. I have downloaded both a new screen saver and a new Chrome extension in the last few days, and I removed them both, thinking that one of them HAD to be the cause of this problem - no such luck. Some comments I've seen have suggested that it might be the battery. For context, I sent my laptop in for repair about 2 months ago and they replaced the battery, repaired the charging port, and sent a new charger cord. I've had no issues with any of the replacement parts. Also, I've done 2 battery tests in the last ~48 hours; the first said everything was fine, and the second said that the battery was functioning properly but needs to be calibrated, whi... Read more
Looks like you have done couple of troubleshooting so from my point of view:1. Hey, I just updated a Vulcan Excursion XB tablet to Windows 10.
In the battery icon, there's a brightness toggle that sets to 0, 25, 75, 100 percent.
The problem is that when it toggles to 0, the whole screen disappears!
It's really easy to hit this and the problem is, when it does happen, you can't see anything while the computer is still on!
And if by accident, you'd have to guess where are those icons to try to change it back!
Is there a "minimum brightness" or a way to select the levels of the toggle?
