Can't turn off auto-arrange in Windows 7

Q: Can't turn off auto-arrange in Windows 7

About a month and a half ago, I noticed all my desktop icons were on the left side of the screen in alphabetical order. Turning Auto-arrange off or on does nothing. As soon as I refresh or restart my PC, the icons revert back to the auro-arrange display. We have four user on my PC and oddly enough only my account (which is the admin - not sure if that matters) has the problem. I've read a number of old posts (1-2 years old) that discuss accessing the registry. I'm fairly adept with this thing but I'm not looking to do open heart surgery. Any ideas?

Preferred Solution: Can't turn off auto-arrange in Windows 7

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

On XP I used to be able to place my files where ever I wanted  in explorer. On Windows 7 to my dismay I can't move files ore folder where I want them. Is there a way to turn this off? When tranferring a bunch of files to removable storage there may be files that I may not want to transfer and I can't simply move them out of the way like used to on XP.

This is driving me nuts! . Using Windows XP, I want to disable/kill the Auto Arrange function in My Pictures (and all sub-folders). Unticking it in context menu (right click) makes no difference nor (anymore) does editing the Registry Entry (ie, HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Windows NT/Current Settings/Program Manager/Settings/Auto-Arrange/Edit D Word Value, etc.

Any idea what I should do next?

A:How to disable Auto Arrange in Windows XP?

Can you provide some more info on what you are trying to accomplish or what the OS is preventing you from doing?
which view do you have your My Pictures (and subfolders) set to?

Auto Arrange simply moves the icons neatly to the beginning of the window. you can change the order of them but you cannot leave space between them. with this unchecked, you can scatter your icons anywhere you want them. I only find this useful with desktop icons that I want in a particular place all of the time for convenience but inside a folder, I don't understand why you wouldn't want auto arrange

Did you try setting defaults on both the General tab and View tab of Folder Options?
Also, Reset All Folders button on the View tab should restore the default views of all folders while Apply to All Folders will set the folder view of every folder to the view of the folder you are currently in.

I HATE Windows Vista!!! This worthless piece of junk program takes it upon itself to periodically auto arrange my files on its own which is VERY annoying since I have several hundred documents sorted into numerous folders and I need to have them arranged in a particular manor so that I can find them when I want! However, I can usually fix the problem by doing a system restore but, after it auto arranged the files again this evening, I attempted to restore the system but, it told me that there are no restore points present on my computer!!! So, I tried downloading and installing the bat file for disabling auto arrange in Windows Vista 64 Bit listed in the tutorial per the instructions and I did see exactly what the tutorial said I would. But, I am STILL able to auto arrange the files by clicking on Auto Arrange! So, how do I PERMENENTLY disable this worthless feature?

A:Help with disabling Windows Vista Auto Arrange

Hello doctrout, and welcome to Vista Forums.

The tutorial below you mentioned will disabled auto arrange, but you are still able to turn it back on for any specific folder. I'm not sure what to say other than don't click on the "Auto Arrange" option that will turn it on for that folder. If you do, then clicking in it again will turn it off again for that folder.

First off I used the forum search function and didn't fins any threads addressing this issue so I apologize in advance if this is a duplicated topic and I somehow missed it.

I have disliked this "feature" since windows 7 and I see they still have not restored the ability to manually sort without having to give every file a "tag". Note: I do not want to use windows live essentials as I hate photo gallery, so this is not an option. I used to be able to arrange my photos by dragging and dropping them next to another similar photo and it would snap to grid where I dropped it. This helps me eliminate duplicate pictures. I found this ink for windows 7:

Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable - Windows 7 Help Forums

However it says very clearly at the beginning not to use it for any other OS versions. Does any one know if this works for windows 10 as well or if there is a way to do it in windows 10? I would prefer a 3rd party program as oppose to editing my registry if it can be helped (all the things that need "fixing" for customization in windows 10 seem to always suggest a reg fix, but I am afraid to edit my registry too much).

I appreciate any help.

Hi there,

Im looking for a way to disable the way windows 7 automatically arranges files and folders.
What im talking about is...When new files and folders are created / moved to a folder in which you are currently viewing, the new objects are thrown into the original folder contents and automatically arranged. I know this sounds rather vague / moronic....

But what im really looking to do is, have windows 7 act like XP does with new objects. Where as the newly moved / pasted files or folders would be placed at the very end of all original contents in the folder being viewed.

Sorry for the pithy description....got a bad cold and a little out of it right now.
Any ideas?

Thanks for reading.

So I've just gone from Vista to Windows 7 and was wondering a few things:

- In Vista's Windows Explorer you could change the order of files and then click Name or Date modified, etc at the top and it would arrange them in order again. I really loved this feature and find the Windows 7 instant auto arranging. What's the best way to get these features in Win 7?

Hey, guys

This just came to my attention: How to Disable Full Row Select in Explorer in Windows 7? - The Winhelponline Blog
It is a hack to disable the full-row selection in Explorer. As a side effect it also adds the option to disable the auto-arrange in "icon" mode. See the attached screenshot. Thanks to tuxplorer for sending me the link and pointing the auto-arrange side effect.

Basically this hack forces Explorer to use the old "SysListVew32" control instead of the new "DirectUIHWND" control, so most features start behaving like in Vista (my favorite - the blue sort header is back instead of the 7's white header, also the gap between the header and the first file is gone).

BTW, there is a typo in the instructions. They say to add a key to Shell\Bags\AllFolders, but it is actually Shell\Bags\AllFolders\Shell. Also this hack only affects the generic folders, not special folders like Music or Videos.

I'm guessing a different GUID is needed for each special folder type. I'm hoping somebody in this forum who is more familiar with the registry hacks can figure it out for all folders and prepare a better tutorial. Brink? You know you want to

so if your list is in column A from cell A2 to A1000
then in Column B2 put
and copy down from B2 to B100
now that should count the entries then you can sort by that column and that should work

I have obviously affected a change to my system, perhaps my registery, that now causes my large assortment of desktop icons to auto-arrange upon each boot or reboot.

I have tried all options available by the menu from right-clicking on the desktop. I am no longer able to rearrange the icons by selecting the options offered such as size, name, etc. If I manually rearrange them (and lock the desktop and/or save a "scheme"), they still auto-arrange on the next boot.

I can find no help in the "Help" section other than the above. Would anyone know how I can regain my ability to selectively arrange and keep the pattern of desktop icons?

A:Desktop icons will now only auto-arrange.

If you are happy making changes to your registry try this. First, set a system restore point. Next, click on Start>run. In the box type "regedit". As an extra precaution click File on the top line then select Export. Name the file "backup" and save to your desktop. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer. In the right hand pane there may be an item called "NoSaveSettings". If you don?t see this, add it as a binary value, by right clicking in the right hand pane and selecting "New" then "Binary". Type in "NoSaveSettings" without the quotes and enter the value: 00 00 00 00 If it already exists edit it to 00 00 00 00, then exit from regedit. See if that works. If it doesn't you can either delete the entry from the registry or import your backup. Let me know how you get on.

Are there any registry tweaks I could do to turn off the auto-arranging and sorting in explorer? I need to be able to rearrange my files in any order I want to by dragging them around. This is the biggest annoyance so far with Win 7. I can do this on the desktop, so why can't I do this in the folders?

A:Any way to disable auto-arrange and sorting?

This might work for you, but its not exactly the same. Right click somewhere in the folder select sort by then click on more. Check "Date accessed" and click ok. Select Date accessed in the sort by menu and click on ascending. It will kind of work for you if you like having the files you extract at the end of the list. If you extract a folder it will show up at the bottom of all the folders. Hope this helps!

I was XP user till lately , It disapoint me to upgrade to 7 but we have too.. anyway MS seem to be relying on goofers to build their systems -_-

I followed this tutorial Windows Explorer Auto Arrange - Disable Thanks to shawn for it.

I have added the moded reg , closed explorer process and it worked , ran the restore reg closed explorer again and got the forced auto arrange back. Was testing. So I have added the modded reg and disabled auto arrange.

Now I wanted to restore the forced auto arrange but system seems to be rebuilding the shell reg on a disabled auto arrange. I deleted them manualy , restrored backup reg still same thing.
Anyone know a fix ? other than rebuilding the whole reg again. just out of curious.

And the reason why I wanted to restore the forced or default setting , becuase when I move my file/folder to another location in the same folder and opening it right away it will open the pervious file/folder that was on it's place.I have to pick , click another location or refresh to open the correct arranged file.
Is this normal with everyone ? thought I could fix by reapplying the stepps o_O.

PS: it's ok if can't fix , but it's good to know xD
Much thanks all.

A:Can't undo disabled auto arrange o_O ?

Hello Blackhorse, and welcome to Seven Forums.

Normally, folder views should be reset to enable auto arrange again. However, if you like, you could try merging the REG file attached below and restart the computer to see if it may be able to enable auto arrange without having to reset folder views.

If it messes the folder views up, or causes some unknown issue, then you could just merge the Reset_All_Folders_To_Default_Folder_Views.reg file from OPTION TWO in the tutorial linked in your post to reset folder views and fix it.

Hope this helps,

For all of you Windows 7 users who have been annoyed (like myself) at the removal of "Auto Arrange", a fix has been discovered.

It was discovered by Ramesh Srinivasan @ How to Disable Full Row Select in Explorer in Windows 7? - The Winhelponline Blog

(Taken from the site)
I?m writing this article specifically for Windows 7, because the FullRowSelect registry key that you used in Windows Vista, doesn?t work in Windows 7.....

Auto arrange menu option is back. Atlast, you can disable Auto arrange option when in "icons" view. This wasn?t possible in Windows 7 earlier.....
It involves editing the Registry so I don't reccomend it for everyone, however, I have had limited Registry Editing experience and I was able to follow the step by step instructions with complete success. I can confirm that the fix/hack does enable you to use "Auto Arrange" but I can not guarentee that your system will remain stable after the edit, as editing the Registry can cause problems if done incorrectly. If you edit the Registry you do so at your own risk.

I know there are a few ways to align desktop icons. You can "auto arrange" or "align to grid" or both. With neither of these options checked, the icons should stay exactly where I drag them to. This works fine for all desktop icons except for any Microsoft Word documents on my desktop. If I put the icon anywhere on the desktop it stays there until:

 SPX18.JPG   101.47KB
I open the document ,edit it and save it again. When I save it,the icon moves to the left side of my desktop and "auto arranges". In other words it moves over and under the last icon on the left side of screen. THIS ONLY happens with a Microsoft Word  document. Everything else stays where I leave it,

This first started a couple of days ago.  Turned my laptop on and found all my desktop icons had auto arranged down the left hand side in alphabetical order.  I'd had it plugged in to a TV the previous day so just assumed they had auto arranged
due to a resolution change.  I changed them back to how they were and didn't think anything more about it until the next day when I booted up and they had auto arranged again.

- I then narrowed it down a bit further and found that if I rearranged a couple of icons then right clicked the destop and choose 'refresh' this wouldn't save their current position, it would put them back into alphabetical order down the left hand side
- I then tried safe mode using my login, and again it failed to hold the desktop icon position when I clicked refresh, or rebooted.
- After that I tried safe mode and normal mode using a different user account, and they could hold desktop icon positions with no problems.
So it just seems to be affecting my user account on the laptop.  I have made sure both 'auto arrange icons' and 'align icons to grid' are turned off.  align icons to grid makes no difference whether it's on or off.
Running 64 bit version of Windows 7 ultimate.

Any suggestings on what could be causing this, and what I could try to fix it?

I have three Lenovo Ideapad 330s, all bought at the same time running windows 10. Two work fine. All have auto arrange turned off. One, no matter what I do, when I turn the computer off and then turn it back on, my icons are moved around. I only have two lines of icons on the left side of the screen. Once, I ordered them the way I wanted, insured auto arrange was off, then restarted. When the desktop loaded back, some icons were way out in the middle of the screen, and others were on the left side, and others were around the middle but towards the bottom. It's almost like what happens if I run a full-screen game at a different resolution, and when I close it my desktop icons are moved around, but I'm only turning the computer off and back on, and I have the computer set at the default resolution and I've never changed it.

Why is it that if you get any two computers, exact same hardware, same setup, eventually one's going to act very different from the other?

After imaging many, many Win 7 systems, we discovered that the Desktop | View | "Auto Arrange" option and "Align to grid" option were off. We want them on (because the computers are in public spaces).

Is there a set of registry settings or group policy settings that we can use to turn those options on?

I have found that a registry setting ([HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Shell\Bags\1\Desktop] "FFlags"=dword:00200220 ) is related to those options, but just changing that key (to "FFlags"=dword:00200225 ) does not do anything. Refreshing the RegEdit screen just changes the value back to its previous value.

Any ideas? I really don't want to have to go to each system and change this manually.

Got a few questions which tie in to what i am doing so i'll try to explain as best i can.

I want to be able to have excel automatically arrange the order in which it displays the information based on the value or information in a cell. Eg i have a list of things i sell online and I track their performance using the spreadsheet were i have a sheet for every product type which are linked to a master snapshop sheet which has the prices, weight and other info about the items. The product name on this main sheet is hyperlinked to the sheet containing the product and in turn the data in that sheet is formulated back to the main snapshot the aim being as little data input as possible to calculate everything.
I would like to be able to have the snapshop mainsheet automatically put for example the best performing product at the top of the list. At the moment a have to select the cell and expand the data range but this is erratic as i don't think i do it properly. Sometimes it messes all the data up. I am not that good with excel so i am probably going to be told why don't you do this or that etc but that is ok if anyone has an idea.
Anyone able to help?
Apologies if its difficult to follow but i will give more info if requested.
If someone has a link to a webpage that can help would be great also.

THE SOLUTION (Found 2012-08-21):

Removed registry folder:

Regfile to fix this and additional information can be found:

If that does'nt help you its must certainly some other folder around there.. using a fresh windows account you can easily test it folder by folder by exporting them from the corrupt account and runing it on the non-corrupt profile and log out / log in until you see when the working account gets the same problem as your corrupt one.. then you know what folder it is.

A:Auto arrange bugg and file view memory loss in win 7 x64

For those looking for the answer i still havent found a solution... i narrowed it down to it has something to do with a corrupt user profile ... if i create a new user in windows the new user don't have this problem.. however its not a FIX since i copying all my information to a new user is not possible.. the guides online only work partly and don't mention loss in some profile settings.

I find it pretty sad that officiall windows support answers are to make a new profile .. its the typical microsoft way ... find a way around problems .. not solving them.. my suggestions.. go mac or linux.

I have a user with Windows 7 OS. She had Auto Arrange icons turned off, as she prefers to keep her icons in a particular order and location on her desktop. Last week she got a trojan. We ran virus scans to remove. Since then, even though Auto Arrange is UNchecked, her icons rearrange each time she reboots. I tried checking it, rebooting, then unchecking it, but when I checked it and rebooted, it came back up unchecked, and with her icons all on the left. I have researched this for hours and I can only find 2 solutions - "uncheck auto arrange" (it IS unchecked), or install some kind of desktop icon manager (which we shouldn't have to do). Any ideas?

I use a vitualization type software called Toolwiz Time Freeze that on a restart removes all your downloads etc of the session.
It gets abit annoying when a Windows auto update starts downloading/installing when you know that TTF will be removing the update on the restart (that is also needed to install Windows updates).

Any advice on how i can get windows to tell me what important updates i need, WHILST having the option of when i can download and install them?

Many thanks for any help.

See this tutorial by Brink:

I have mine set to "Check for updates...", and that works for me.
I get notified, but it's up to me, if and when to download and install them.

Is your computer a member of a domain? Was it once a member of a domain (and then you upgraded it?)

It sounds like your policy settings are being overriden.

Hello, recently my computer showed a windows security alert in the right hand side of the task bar. It said that windows automatic update was turned off. I clicked onto the windows security center and it would not let me turn auto update on. A message will sometimes pop up that says something like: "Windows is unable to turn on automatic updates please go the the control panal, click on system and turn them on from there." This message does not appear every time. When I click control panel>Performance/Maintenance>system>auto update, I apply the change and hit OK but nothing happens after that. Automatic update remains off after trying what was suggested.

I have also been getting the same pop up about once every 5-10 minutes (sometimes more) that says "unable to connect to server" with the url:

These occur when I am using firefox. I have not tested other browser... Read more

I'm using Windows XP. On the "Windows Security Center" page I'm unable to turn ON the Automatic Updates. I've followed there directions and have gone to the "Control Panel" then to "Automatic Updates". On that particular page I'm able to highlight "Automatic (recommended)" to upload everyday at 2:00am. But my Windows security Center doesn't allow me to turn it ON. I'm not that advanced with computers so if anybody has a suggestion please speak basic. Thanks
