Thinkpad x230t - touch screen not working

Q: Thinkpad x230t - touch screen not working

Hello
I have recently purchased a lenovo thinkpad x230 tablet from ebay. The seller specified that the laptop supports both touch and pen input. But only the pen works, the touch screen doesn't work.
After searching online quit a bit, I discovered that some models of x230t are only pen input (no touch).
But I don't know if that is the case with my laptop or is it some hardware or software problem, and I wasn't able to find any online documentation about the models that support touch.
My model number is: 3438-2S1, and my serial number is: XX-XXXXX.
Also attached is a photo of my laptop screen, if it helps in anyway.
Can anyone please help me?

I recommend downloading and running Reimage. It's a computer repair tool that has been proven to identify and fix many Windows problems with a high level of success.

I've used it in the past to identify and fix everything from blue screens (BSOD's), ActiveX errors, corrupt files and processes, dll/exe/sys errors, recover lost memory, Windows update problems, defragging, malware removal etc.

You can download it direct from this link http://downloadreimage.com/download.php. (This link will automatically start a download of Reimage that you can save to your computer.)

Hi,I suddenly noticed that my touch screen is not working. I have tried to update driver for HID-compliant touch screen (however best driver was alread used). Also tried to disable/enable the device but still no function. I checked the "Events" for the driver and the last event was "Device not migrated" with the following message:"Device HID\VID_056A&PID_504A&Col06\6&2fac5222&0&0005 could not be migrated.Last Device Instance Id: {DEA5AE2A-D1FD-438A-A091-CBD484788436}\Vid_0000&Pid_0000\5&18534b98&0&02Class Guid: {745A17A0-74D3-11D0-B6FE-00A0C90F57DA}Location Path: Migration Rank: 0xF000FFFFFFFFF122Present: trueStatus: 0xC0000719" The pen driver seem to work though. I noticed that outside the visible area on the screen there is a small crack in the glass. Can that cause the touch screen to not function? Regards, Torsten

As the X1 Carbon 4th Gen isn't available with a touchscreen, that's no real surprise. If you want a very similar device that has a touchscreen, have a look at the X1 Yoga.

Hi all,I'm not sure if I posted in the correct forum and I'm new to this so bear with me.  So I bought this laptop around 5 months ago and only about 1 month ago the left side of the touch screen is not working. It would register that something is touching the bottom left side because I have my visual feedback turned on and after a half a minute of that, you can see it go haywire and register nearly the entire 1/3 left side. After 30 seconds of it going haywire, it would stop. And then either the entire left side or just the bottom left side would completely not register any touches at all. This wouldn't happen all the time, just every other day and definitely enough to be extremely annoying.  I bought my laptop in to get fixed for a completely unrelated problem because it's still under warranty and I told them about this issue but it doesn't seem like they fixed it and I'm thinking it's because it just didn't happen to happen to them when they had it. Also, I'm not sure if it's a software issue (since I don't think that's covered by warranty) or hardware. I have Windows 10 Pro, 64 bit OS, pen and touch support with 10 points.  Is there anyway that you guys can help me on this? It would be much appreciated.

This began about six months ago. I picked up my laptop and it was unresponsive and the red logo lights was blinking. I forced shutdown with the power button and restarted it. When it was back on I could get power but no data transfer from any usb ports, the touch screen didn't work, and if i let it sleep it automatically went unresponsive with the same error light. I checked for viruses. None. I updated all possible drivers. Nothing. I even restored my computer to factory settings and reinstalled windows. Nada. I use it heavily for school, so I haven't had time to send it in for warranty. One day, I turned it on and everything worked again. Wonderful. A couple days later I opened it and it was back to its previous state. PLEASE HELP

I posted a similar question earlier and people referred me to the Yoga (much appreciated).  However, I was interested in the 2.6 lb carbon version with touch screen capabilities.  Asus has a Spin 7 model that is very good at 2.65lb, but I miss the red mouse toggle in the middle of the keyboard and Asus's track pad was designed too large....causing unintended tapping.  The Yoga, while nice, is heavier than I was looking for.  The 14 inch screen is about 3.3lb? the 12 inch at 3? I thought that some of the earlier Thinkpad Carbons had touch screen and was hoping they would make a return soon.  Thanks,

Hey everybody, I just received my P40 last week as a replacement for another Lenovo device. So far, everything seems to work fine with one exception: When I turn the screen over to the "tablet position", the touch screen and the touch pen show erroneous behaviour.a) As soon as I make the first input with the touch pen, I cannot make any further input with my finger, so the touch input is simply turned off. The Windows setting to ignore touch input when the stylus is used is not active.b) When I try to tap buttons at certain areas of the screen, especially at the upper edge, the cursor of the stylus starts jumping around and shows up at the lower edge of the screen. That means that when I for example tap on the "X" symbol in the upper right corner to close a window, I actually click on some of the symbols in the system tray in the lower right corner. This problem stops occuring as soon as the angle between the two case parts (screen and keyboard) reaches/exceeds approx. 40. It does not matter if Windows is in "Tablet" or "Desktop" Mode. I already tried to manually install another Wacom driver mentioned at https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-S-Series-ThinkPad-Yoga/Wacom-Tablet-Service-for-ISD-Driver-Win... and https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/ThinkPad-P-and-W-Series-Mobile/P40-Yoga-issues/td-p/3293985. I had no luck trying driver versions 7.3.3.12, 7.3.4.8 and 7.3.4.13. I would really appreciate your help since this issue makes working in the tablet position... Read more

Hello Friends,

I recently purchased a Lenovo X230 tablet PC (3435-24U) and I love it.
After MUCH debate with Lenovo, however, I think I have determined this: While the unit has a symbol for a light (either backlight on keyboard or thinklight on screen) on the spacebar, this particular model does not have that feature.

1. It's a shame because it's a great feature, and I hope my diagnosis is wrong, but when I press the function key and space bar together, I get no light, and get a symbol on the screen of a light with a circle/slash through it. Seems like no light to me, yes?

2. As a fallback, I see that X230 BACKLIT replacement keyboards are available for under $50 on the internet and wondered if any of you had any luck switching out a non-lit keyboard for a lit one, either by yourself or with professional help.

Any insight on either issue would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you...

hi Hersh,

Welcome to Lenovo Community Forums!

First do a Power Drain
     (If the battery is removable)
Remove AC and Battery and hold the power button down for 15 sec.
Turn the computer back on and see if the Touch capability is now detected under System Properties,
                  If not
I suggest you contact Lenovo Technical Team about the Issue as this may be a device detection issue.

The Lenovo Monitor that I use it with is a touch display and the touch on that is also stopped. In device manager I see this: I've tried all the usual stuff like deleting all the bad marked devices in the device manager and restarting and nothing works. I've ran all the latest Lenovo driver updates and that makes no difference. I've tried a hard wired mouse, but that comes up in device manager as bad. They all show: The drivers for this device are not installed. Hi guys,
Sorry for barging on this entry but I couldn't find a way to add a new question.
I have a T550 with a touch screen option which just stopped working.
Haven't been slammed, broken or even transported so I say no mechanical damage there, it just plain stopped working after many Windows 10 and Lenovo updates. I can't pinpoint really after which update it stopped working as I use touch functionality only occasionally.

I have tried to disable-enable the touch HID from Windows, also I have tried excluding the touch screen from shutting off when the laptop goes to sleep mode (forum suggestion). So I am over these basic moves.

Is there maybe a known issue on this? Perhaps I shall wait for some new drivers to come out?
Please help, I am at my wit's end trying to solve it.

Loads of thanks,
Gabor

Hi there, sorry to be a bother.Like the title says, my touch screen stopped working. I went on to my computer one afternoon and found my mouse stuck in the top left corner, fidgeting. This was what I was expiriencing. (My touch-screen still worked fine at the time, but I still couldn't do anything or control the mouse, but I could tell that it was still working and it still responded.) After a bit of time and a few restarts later, it went back to normal, but my touch-screen then stopped working. I'm used to the touch-screen working incorrectly occasionally, and much like the mouse thing, a restart or two helps. It has now been three days and my touchs-creen still does not work. I've tried many of the solutions found in these forums, but to no avail. I am running Windows 10 and have had this computer for 2+ years.  Thanks.

The touchscreen stopped working suddenly on my Envy TouchSmart Sleekbook 4-1115dx. At first i though it was like a normal failure and that will get fixed by turning the pc off or restarting so I did not pay attention to it until now that I had restart my pc multiple times. Currently running win10. I started to believe it was because of an update a few days ago since it was when the problem started but all drivers and everything is up to date. I have checked for the HID-compliant Touch Screen driver and had to  show hidden divices in order to find it. I cannot enable it and when i check in the properties the following message displays: "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45)To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer." I have no idea on how to connect or how it got disconnected. I come from a similar thread but did not solve my problem. I have been researching this for hours and have not found and answer. Help please!

Today my digitizer stopped working for the first time since I purchased my Thinkpad Yoga several years ago. Touch screen still works as normal. I don't think it's software related because I dual boot Windows and Ubuntu and it doesn't work in either operating system. Before it would work in both operating systems, and I haven't had any updates since it was last working. Is it possible for the digitizer itself to be broken somehow? I haven't dropped the device or spilled any liquid on it. I've read elsewhere on the forum that the digitizer is powered by a capacitor that is charged within the laptop. Is this still true for Thinkpad Yogas? Are there steps I can take to diagnose the issue?

My HDD died suddenly a few weeks ago and took everything with it..Before that I had successfully updated from the original Win8 to 8.1 and later to Windows 10, never losing any functionality. With the new hard drive I now have performed the 3rd clean install, including one off the recovery files in the computer (was not aware of that funtion at first), with both 32-bit and 64-bit varieties, but I have been left every time without the touch-screen functionality of the system. The Device Mgr simply does not show any trace of a "HID compliant touch screen", neither hidden nor in the open.=> What drivers do I need to download (from where?) and install, to get the OS to "see" the hardware?I have tried the "System Interface Foundation" install, but without any visible success. Thank you

Hi, I just attempted to replace my touchscreen for the second time, previously replaced the screen however the wrong screen had been delivered, so I had to do install again once the correct scree was delivered, first install went fine, just not a touchscreen display, everything else worked fine. However during the installation of the correct Full HD Touchscreen i realized I had not shut off the power, so I forced a shut down prior to disconnecting the display ribbon, completed the installation of the new touchscreen, however when i tried to restart laptop nothing happened, and no lights were on, computer does nothing. I reinstalled the old touchscreen display that was known to be working, but still the computer did nothing.  Tried disconnecting the Battery but with no success, it appears as if a fuse was blown because theres no sign of power, not sure if these have fuses, but thats what is seems like. Hello and welcome,

By "so I forced a shut down" do you mean you held down to power button to force a shutdown, or did you go to BIOS and disable the battery?

If the latter, it won't power up until the AC charger is connected.  You're probably well past trying that but I had to ask...

I have ben dealing with problems with this touch screen since I got the laptop.  It has been continuously ghosting, while it got better after the June update, it still ghosts without touches, until you start using the touch screen.  When using the touch screen it starts drawing gray lines in between the point im touching and the point its ghosting to (the lines arent always direct). I recently wiped my the drive, reimaged to a backup from april and tried reupdating it.  When I got to the touch screen drivers, I got through the initial setup and told it to open the update when finished but the machine froze.  Now when I try to reinstall, I get to the finish page on the update tools install, have it open the updater, but the program immediately closes.Any help would be much appreciated.

Hello Lenovo Forum, I installed Xubuntu on my Thinkpad Yoga 14 and one day I tried to poke around and click the mouse button during boot time. Then I had the magical on-screen virtual keyboard popping up on the GRUB menu. You can see a photo of the on screen virtual keyboard here: http://imgur.com/p6JUrQr I also give a video showing how to activate the keyboard: Basically, clicking left mouse button (either the one on the trackpoint or an external mouse can work) will bring up the virtual keyboard. You need to touch it quickly, because every time any content on the screen changes (in this video, that is the countdown which refreshes every second) the keyboard will disappear. Touching the a key on the Virtual keyboard is equivalent to pressing the corresponding physical key. In this video I clicked Down Arrow, Up Arrow and Enter and booted Xubuntu. The Keyboard shows only in the GRUB Menu, as far as I have tested. It does not pop up in BIOS even if you click the left mouse button in BIOS. Is there a more detailed description of this Keyboard available? I searched "Thinkpad Yoga 14 virtual keyboard grub" but got no useful results, so the Keyboard looks like a secret, an easter egg or some maintenance mode to me. Personally I think this keyboard will make it very convenient for those who use the Yoga in tent mode / presentation mode / tablet mode and need to reboot across Linux and Windows and have no external USB keyboard and do not want to co... First of all I was running Windows 8 everything was fine. Upgraded to Windows 8.1 everything was good at first. Months after doing so my touch screen started acting up. It would only work when I position the screen a certain way. So I stopped messing with it because I thought it was a wiring problem inside the computer. I would fix it later, And then sadly I upgraded to Windows 10. I noticed shortly after there was no touch screen options at all. It says there is no Pen and Touch. Today it was listed in the control panel so I started messing with it. Drivers were there all up to date. They said the Device did not migrate. It was 2 or 3 drivers listed for the touch screen and they all said the same thing. After a restart they were no longer in the device manager and no options in the control panel anymore. Please help me figure this out... Thank you.

What's the model name and complete model number of that Toshiba?
(2 sets of characters separated by a dash comprise the complete model number)

If that Toshiba wasn't tested for and doesn't provide driver support for Windows 10, you can expect some of its devices not to work properly or not work at all.
That tends to be more of a problem with laptops than it does with desktops.

I am not sure exactly at what point it happened but I recently found that the touch screen on my Elite X2 1011 was not working. The pen still functions normally. When checking the pen and touch settings I can only configure the pen settings and only "Pen support" is listed in view pen and touch settings. The touch screen used to work in both the original Windows 8.1 and then also after upgrading to Windows 10. There have been no error messages and the event logs do not seem to indicate any problems; it is as though the machine has just forgotten it is a touch screen. I have tried reinstalling drivers, reinstalling both Windows 10, and going back to Windows 8.1 to no avail. I really loved this little device but ease of use is cut rather drastically without the touch functionality. Has anyone else had a problem like this and have a solution? Any help at all is greatly appreciated.

Well, it was bound to happen. After 20 plus years in corporate tech support, unpacking, configuring, and shipping laptops all over the world for the first time I cracked a laptop screen. Unfortunately, this laptop screen was attached to my personal HP Envy Touch Smart 15 Notebook PC.

I have always believed that ?stuff happens?. We live by the luck of the draw. When it?s time it is time. You never know. When I picked up my laptop one morning last week on the way to an offsite there was no mistaking that muffled pop of a cracked screen. Stuff happens.

My screen still worked but no longer with touch screen functionality and I immediately jump on the web to determine the cost of and the degree of difficulty to replace the broken screen. In this site and others, I was surprised by the number of Envy owners who?s broken screen story mirrored my own and whose uploaded photos look uncomfortably familiar.

In almost every uploaded image the impact area was nearly identical, roughly 1.5 cm from the top bevel and nearly perfectly in line with the center of the touchpad.

Many generations of the Envy are designed with a Touchpad that sits in a shallow trough. That trough, the width of the Touchpad, extends out and forms a depression along the outer edge of the laptop.  When closed, the top or lid, with the fragile display, is supported by the stiffer bottom ?half? of the laptop. But a depression on the edge of the keyboard half of the la... Read more

Hey all, I woke up this morning and started using my computer to find that there were white spots on my computer screen that I had not previously noticed. I have had the computer for two years and haven't had any similar issues. There does not appear to be anything wrong with the pixels, as the color changes appropriately - it's just brighter. Furthermore, the bright spots on the screen heat up much more than the rest of the screen, which remains cool. I also noticed that, though this may be a separate issue, the touch screen isn't responding. Here is an image (it's much more noticeable on a white background): http://imgur.com/09sYisg   Any help is much appreciated!

The display of my HP ENVY TouchSmart 15-j004sa Notebook is cracked from top to bottom. This has resulted in the touch screen ceasing to function... what am I to do? Can I send my laptop off to be mended, or do I have to take it back to John Lewis to get it mended? What is the likely cost of fixing it?

A:Screen cracked, touch screen not working, HP ENVY TouchSmart...

It's not covered under HP warranty for any reason as I found out.  They will repair it for about $250.

I recently bought a 2nd hand ThinkPad x250 with pretty low specs. I want to investigate the possibility to upgrade the screen from the IPS Non-Touch HD to a FHD touchscreen. At many places I read it is not possible because 'the motherboard is different', but I cannot find any motherboard with or without touch support. I suspect that it's not the motherboard itself not supporting the digitizer, but some other part that needs to be replaced or added to the system. Is it an option to buy a working complete X240 with touchscreen and swap components to move the touchscreen to the X250? I don't want to swap the motherboard itself because then I basically end up with a X240 in a X250 housing with only 8GB Ram support, and I want to upgrade to 16GB.

Hello all. My X230T screen had dead pixels, and laptop was under warranty, lenovo came and changed it.but only a few months after my screen started doing that depending of the inclination. if I move it, it change the "band" color, and on some position, it works OK.  I found on aliexpress replacement panels for 50$. Before buying it, I have few questions. 1) My screen has scratches. Is the panel I will buy will directly replace the one that is there, or is there a "glass" in front that I should replace at the same time, or is it the touchscreen ?I imagine there is a protective glass in front because there is the "lenovo" sign showed for instance and it's not present on the panel, and it seems to be same part. To said it other way (sorry for my english), when I put my finger on the screen, do I touch directly the panel (that will be replaced) or is there any sort of covering glass in front? 2) I think some screen problem like this can be due to a faulty cable, but from what I read the problem would be on whole screen, not only on a line like it is now. Can anyone confirm this ? 3) If indeed it's the panel that is defective, in this kind of situation is it possible to "fix" the panel, like I don't know, putting something to "push" on the false contact so the contact stays ?  4) My panel is LP125WH2-SLB3. I'll replace it with LP125WH2-SLT2. Seems the same to me. Or any other model to recommend that would be still IPS (I found lot of "c... Read more
